"And they're getting their corners are a little older. Marcus Peters is the older guy. Now he can still play still effective, but we've seen him just get blown by by receivers. Miss tackles blown coverage, you got a rookie safety back there, and Hamilton from northern Dane. He makes a few mistakes. So the name and the player sounds great, but what you're telling me to fit in. And I think they just felt desperate to make a move. That's what this felt like. Let's go get the best player on the side of the ball that wants to get traded or the team wants to get rid of that we can go get and I thought that's what they did there. The head scratcher was Heinz to buffalo, not much of a head scratcher to me 'cause I've been saying all summer, I love their offense and I understand why people are all in on buffalo, but you have to be able to run the football and NFL. And the last three years they've been 25th, 26th and 28th, it's getting worse. You drafted cook from Georgia. And then you go trade for Heinz and you're not even giving cook carries. So something's going on there and I felt like they felt the need to go out and make a move because Kansas City did something earlier and went and got Tony. Somebody posted him running routes in practice and was like, that food was faking in New York. They ain't now wrong. 'cause he look, he looks fast. He looks good, so the Heinz move was a head scratcher to me 'cause it's like, dude, you got running backs there. You went and got a older guy been used a lot backup type book. The evidence is at least in the AFC that teams are loading up for bear. They see the Kansas City and they see buffalo and it's like, all right, we got to try to catch up and figure this out. "And there has to be fuel from John Harbaugh, who's just been arguing with Marcus Peters two weeks ago about this exact decision. He has to show that he trusts his defense. He has to maintain that his role in the locker room with these guys, and sometimes that's bigger than the numbers. And it totally paid off. Of course, they went down the field, but let's look at the other side of that game too, where Zach Taylor is now receiving a ton of the blame pie for the slow start from the Bengals. And let's look at his goal line plays. He basically did a Philly special that lost them 20 yards. He ran into the line of scrimmage. He went for it on a fourth down, and didn't get it. It's like, you know, sometimes it's okay to be conservative and take the points and like, hey, defense. I trust you. You played really well. You bottled up Lamar Jackson in a way that's actually been pretty impressive to hold them under 30 points for the night. The numbers might bear itself out over time, but there has to be a deal aspect of this. If you don't have a field aspect of your players and your team, you're not a human being, what happened so we got to get back to stale at once at some point and figure out how we feel about that. Well, I don't think there's much to figure out. He should have punted it to my view. I mean, I don't care about that. I had a conversation, I guess, it doesn't matter. I don't have to include his name, but I had a conversation with really high level Theo a couple weeks ago. And I was just asking him what he what he learned in general about making decisions.

A reminder, two guys that we martindell no longer there. I mean, you wonder if some of that factors in? Dan, in this specific matchup though, you think about some of the struggles that the ravens defensively. You think it's a game that Ja'Marr chase really gets going finally? It can. It's really the game whoever is opposite Marlon Humphrey. I still believe that Marlon Humphrey is an elite cover corner in this league. And while Jamar is phenomenal, I would really be if I'm Joe burrow looking against Marcus Peters. Marcus is incredibly talented, but even if you watch that second half of last week, Josh Allen was doing a good job of working to his side and going off of Marcus. Hey, Marcus, if you're too really shallow on stuff, I'm putting the ball over your head on a couple of the corners. If you fall back, I'll put it underneath. So Marlin is still a very viable cover corner, but it's not even that they have to determine because they have Campbell defensively that they do a nice job in some of their pressures of kind of using him as a screener to the quarterback. Are you going to be a pressure based defense? Are you going to be a front four base to defense? Are you going to be a fire zone based defense right now? There seems to be that some guys run man pressure, some guys are running zone pressure. So one of those receivers, for Cincinnati, is going to have a very favorable matchup when Baltimore decides to blitz defensively. And the thing for Joe in different from last year when Cincinnati saw Baltimore and they did pressure them. It was and you guys have heard me say this. You know, get the ball out and protect yourself. Right now it's, let's go hurt this defense. And until Baltimore gets all 11 guys in the same page when they do it, it could start ugly for them against Cincinnati's offense. Time for one more thing before we go, guys. Everyone trying to figure out where OBJ is going to end up. This is what his former teammate von Miller had to say. She'll go around and see the league and get the love. "Back that sort of engage, but it showed up again and again over these first couple of games. You know, Mike Evans can't do everything himself. And he's an incredible ballplayer. But you know, you got to have other guys that you can go to. And who are going to be healthy, you know, Julio was great addition, but can Julio stay healthy, you know, gage was limping around last night a little bit. Godwin was limping around. I mean, he's coming off an ACL. We've talked about, you know, breaks a good player. He's still got tight ends like get involved in the past game, but you don't have Gronk and mill that offensive lineman. So I mean, if you're Brady, I mean, you saw it on the sneeze strip sack last night. He's on the sideline and I'm reading his lips and he's saying and he's open and we got this guy open, like it's just a frustrating time for him. You know, like I feel like in his competitive mind, he feels like we can still be great if we're perfect. And he likes to pursue that perfection, but it's going to be hard with this team, man. And you know, I had the underwent total. On the box. You know, and I can't say that the struggles offensively surprised me. Defensively though, they have to play better than that because the only way that they're going to make a deep playoff run is going to be winning those games. 24 20. 27, 24, something like that. Those are the types of ball games that are going to have to be in with these high powered offenses. They can't let Patrick Mahomes kick the door down and expect to win a shootout. Chris long here on the rich eisen show. So many different ways to go with you on the ravens and bills game, but I'll go with you through this door. Marcus Peters being very upset with John Harbaugh after Harbaugh went for it on fourth and goal rather than kicking a field goal and leaving it up to the defense, what did you think of when you saw that Chris long? I'm fine with it. You know, I haven't really checked the temperature of the room to see what most people are thinking, but I think, you know, I think the ease with which they moved the ball down the field to build that is. And they slowed down to kick that field goal, but they would have scored a touchdown. And if you've watched the ravens play this year, you know that that secondary has had trouble when somebody's in two minute. We saw it with Miami that sort of thing. I mean, they were in two minute pretty much the whole second, not two minute, but you're in softer coverage. You have to defend the team. It's got a lot of ground to make up. And the bills, the bills went down and were in position to score touchdown pretty quick. So I got no problem with it. I think if they make that play, everybody says what a genius hardball is. Everybody's rolling the B roll of him letting Lamar make the decision. That's the way things go. The only problem I have with it, and we saw this in the Miami buffalo game a week or two ago. Is when buffalo kind of laid up a little bit to ensure that Miami didn't have a ton of time. But tried to score a touchdown, you ended up with the butt, the butt punt, right? That's what you want out of a fourth and goal to go, right? If you don't get it, I would have felt great, even with the struggles that Baltimore's had defensively. If data got stopped on the one. So a lot of people are talking about, hey, Lamar, you know, he wants to throw back. No, he doesn't. He has to throw that ball. You know, like the only thing I wish is that it wasn't picked for a touchback. You know, unless somebody was wide open that play, I think it's ridiculous to put that on Lamar. You call that play. And Boyer made a great play. He was on the end in the word ravens in the end zone. I mean, he was turned around on the end facing the other way, pivots comes back and makes a great place. Second pick of the game. Somebody that really happy to have back. So I have no problem with that. And I think the play of the game for the ravens for the bills rather. Was blowing up that second downplay. You know, first they knock it down at the one or the two and give us a chance to put up a goal line stand. That second downplay, number 93 doesn't get enough credit. He gets so little credit that I've yet to learn his name today. Milano got all of the credit on that TfL. He played great Edmonds was really acting in the second half but this kid swims a tackle blows up a card and the puller that's supposed to come from Milano. And that's the type of stuff that can kill a low red zone possession and it did. So that was a huge goal line stand. The only throw Lamar wants badges with third and 7 to market or not the third and 7 to Mark Andrews in the reds on their up 14, three early in the game to get Andrews in the corner. And he's open and Lamar goes out of the back of the end zone. They go up 21 three there. I don't know. You know, I don't know if buffalo can get back in that game. So that was probably the one throw he really wants back. I thought Lamar played fine man. How to close out games. They get Dobby back. So we'll see. Well, he got, he had a Russian his face, so he didn't see the wide open receiver on that fourth and goal. And you're right. I had that been a touchdown. We've been talking about what a genius John Harbaugh is in the same way that we're talking about what a genius Brian dabel was to go for two in week one and look at the Giants, right? There are three and one right now. I totally changed everything. But I think some ravens fans would say the game that the play that changed everything was the roughing the passer call on Brandon Stevens. That was a bad call. I was terrible. And these things should be reviewable, I think, certainly three 45 Park Avenue in the NFL officiating center should be at least chiming in on that Hawkeye system. I don't know if that's if that's allowable yet. The competition committee isn't reached that. I mean, I'm sure you've been in a recipient of those flags before. It's terrible. It's just absolutely. I think it's third and 15 of that call as it made. So, you know, at the very least, they're going to get another chance to ravens are I would think. Now, Josh could have converted and that could have been all right. I don't know. I think they have to be able to review that. I tend to agree with you. If they can review that without slowing the game down, because some of these are so obvious.

"I mean listen. They might right the ship as the season progresses here. But i think this this ravens team is a team to fade here or at least the next few one of my favorite. Nfl coach cliches. That i've heard over the years. Is that the the best ability is availability and the ravens. Don't have that right now. I mean i just checked they have twelve guys on. I r right now and it's only week to now. Some of those guys will come back like their first round draft pick rashad bateman who had core muscle surgery in training camp. So he'll be back soon but they are banged up and that is hard to overcome at key spots and you mentioned the offensive line. You mentioned the running backs. Marcus peters is enormous loss for them on the defensive side and the secondary so i mean this is a tough spot for the cardinals and lamar jackson. I know was able to come back but marlin hope free without of that game went out and back in out and back in a couple of different times. Like you mentioned so. They're already kind of thin. With peter's being down the secondary. Now humphries kind of like in and out of the game you know. We'll see how his practice schedule looks this week. And and now he's able to participate. But yeah i mean they could be in even worse shape. They're in the second tough division too. Right i mean we. We both are extremely bullish. On the cleveland browns. And the ross. They have on that talent. We may have been a little too low on pittsburgh with how they looked weak. "Take up some of that slack of the running game and how many big plays is he gonna have to make and put everything on his shoulders so i. It's definitely concerning for me. The one thing that's concerning is the acl tears. I don't know if they need somebody to come. Look at the turf for what's going on with their practice practice facility or what's going on with the training but the have that many acl injury. I mean that's rare. Yeah the dobbins injury came in a game these other ones coming in practice but either way a disaster so such. Let's focus in and what this means for the quarterback. This was going to be the year where baltimore expanded the passing offense and then all the receiver's got hurt. It was going to be the year where they leaned lot on these running backs. Especially jk dobbins now. They're all heard what is what is the mark jackson going to have to do to elevate this team. Yeah we'll lamar is gonna have to be bar. And being lamar means going back to that. Twenty nineteen mvp lamar now. Will this hurt the team. Yes some of your top players are out but but this team the baltimore. Ravens have a lot of depth anthony everett at corner. You can come in and replace to mix that marcus peters obviously your top running backs out but you have depth that that position and so the ravens are going to be what we expected them to be but they always find a way to win and some. I don't see them as a team where you say. They're out because all these injuries they're going to figure it out. Well lamar jackson have more pressure quote unquote. Yes but you've got back. Who can do the job. And living on bell. Otherwise they're built to run the ball. And i think once they get guys up to speed that haven't been in the system that they'll be okay and running back. They do like the young tyson williams. Who's now effectively the starter by default the marcus. Peters injury matters a lot because that they've been counting on that defense to be dominant and part of the reason is that secondary and he is a unique player in terms of what he does his nose for the ball his ability to make those. He's not as easily replaceable as just elevating the next guy up so i think that one really shook overall. They're very shaken.

If this was five years ago they'd be impossible to be. What does this mean for. Lamar jackson right like so true. Okay how are they gonna get. Tavis murray i mean he just got cut by the saints right. It seems like a feasible option since he's available right. Yeah i think. Mary is is is a good one But if if we're just talking about the running back spot to replace somebody. I was talking to evan last night and we were going over some stuff in so i said to him i said. Do you say you know if i'm in that room. And i don't know what mark ingram situation was why he departed or why they let him go other than injury. I would kick the tires on that. And find out if i could trade back for him because in houston like come on seriously. He's not. I mean he's getting a check he gonna play well check. They're not going anywhere. But if you go back to lamar mvp here. Who's the running back. Mark ingram who knows the offense mark ingram so you bring other people in that has to get up the spe- on what they do and so i'm like well. Why not give up a late round. Pick and we've seen teams and coaches do this before. Go back and get a guy that was before because you give up a draft pick and you get him. You absorb the salary and now you don't have to teach all over again but question to you guys. What's the most important injury to this team is very is it. You're up, man. It's your time. And this is we've seen people all of a sudden rise to the occasion in these kind of situations, and he's going to have to deliver and Levian Bell is going to have to deliver on the defensive side of the ball. Look, Marcus Peters I've described him as one of the greatest thief that the NFL has ever seen as far as his ability to rob quarterback's blind, But the Ravens were carrying 11 defensive backs on their roster. That's what that was the strongest position group on their team. So that means a veteran like Jimmy Smith, who just started practicing again after spraining an ankle. You're up, Jimmy. They're gonna need to get him healthy as quickly as possible. Anthony Abran, another guy who they drafted in the fourth round at Obama back in 2000 and 18. You're up Tavon Young you playing the slot, But you're up. These guys all have to now come to the rescue and really raise their level of play and play prominent key roles for a team that But they just have to keep things rolling here because this is a team that's supposed to be contending in the division and contending in the conference.
