"Den of Thieves" Actor: Marcus LaVoi.

"My next guest is an actor whose filmography is include four life chambers in the absolutely phenomenal underrated debt of thieves. His name is marcus void. Marcus welcome to the show today. Thanks for having me appreciate it so I'm going to say I've had almost two hundred guests. I don't think any of them have had your path. I don't I mean it's and I say that with the utmost respect and amazement because before we get into the Cath itself the fact that you're still here today's pretty much a miracle in itself right Yeah it's been it's been an interesting journey it seems like a bunch of lifetime's all crammed into one. So acting seemed like the perfect choice. Because I've lived a lot of life and I could probably be anything or do any character that is out there. So yeah it's the ultimate experience as you. You find that early on in Your Life. I mean before we get into the acting itself in the path that you have chosen to. You feel like you're in situations that when you look back. You're still in amazement higher here today. I mean I mean just from looking at what you've been through and reading and research. It's almost I don't WanNa say miracle but I feel like the only word left to choose from. Well Yeah it's funny. You say that I mean. I'm definitely a believer now and my older years on my way to God and you know as you get older you realize there's a bigger picture here and I've just found a way to God and I realized now that there's a purpose for my life in the purpose has now. It's it's about others. It's about serving others and it's about being there for others and ex sharing your experiences with others so that these people can hope and and benefit other people so yeah I guess miracle would be a good way to describe. I'm still here so kickin as well Senate and I have to say I know your your family early on you. Had those things that many many families go through today and talk to me about the white earth Indian reservation? Marcus what what is what is that. How long were you there for? Well my it's interesting. I mean I would. I was born there from wider. My mother was adopted. And my father's still back in the reservation in Minnesota and so it comes from native. American parents They divorced at a young age and with my mother here to California. We started in a life year. Well I lost contact with my dad. Excuse me for many years and later on in life my wife. Lok hired a private investigator located him and we became friends and hit it off. And all those years were Kinda restored so it took me later on in life to kind of learn more about my heritage in my roots and my other distant from them and didn't really have the availability to learn about my past until I was reunited with my father. And that's an amazing story and Self Marcus Marcus. Do you find that there have been people in your situation where they make contact with parent later on in life. Some people chip choose the road of anger of. Why was that? Never an option for you and I'm not assuming that you weren't angry but you know because you hear that story every once in a while sometimes people embrace it and you know life is short mentality but there's also people say you know what you know. Screw you for whatever you know. I'm not I'm not. I don't know the story in detail but why why. Why not the anger road for you? Oh no you're absolutely correct and spot on. It was a take through it real quick. My it was my birthday and my wife like thought this would be a great birthday present and I came home and she's like Hey let's go to dinner. What's going on and she laid out all this paperwork in front of me. She was so excited and she goes read it and I was looking through it. I'm I'm lost and I'm like what am I looking at here and I'm kinda seeing some names and I'm trying to piece together and you're absolutely right when when it hit me. I was so angry I was like. I'm a grown man now. I don't need him. He was around for me. I don't really think about my past my heritage. This man's dead. I was so angry and for three days. I student that and then I reached out to him. Kinda let him have it and I don't know what happened. It was just wonderful reunion. And we just talk and he flew out and we hung out and we're best friends now. So yeah it was. It was a it was a huge blessing for me. Yeah I think it speaks volumes about you as a person right. We see tough guy. That's probably seen some things in his life but he's also I mean just from talking to you now I can see. You're clearly very articulate way. You process things so yeah. You're definitely in a better place. In how long after that so you eventually? What makes you decide to go into the Marines? What's what's the selling point with two Marines for you? I just was a poor as a child. Really had no plan and I just went off to serve. My country wanted to do great things and be great person and help others and serve and then got got out there when directly into law enforcement. It's funny because when I got to meet my Dad. Finally we got to talk. His journey was the same marine. When the sheriff's department like my exact life journey him that I just kind of picked it up and are copied it and had no idea that that was his journey as well for for those of us that have not been in the military how toughest Paris island. It's unlike any other thing in the world. It's the top top training yet right there. Marcus cry myself to sleep every night if I hear asylum the second of your a couple of parts here before we get to your wonderful acting. Career You Work for Department of Corrections. That's the only I have friends that are in corrections and I feel like they are mentally. Just they are just so zapped like they have seen everything to me. It's one of the toughest careers anybody could have right. Because if you're even if you're a police officer you see kind of good things every day whereas department of corrections I feel like it's just like okay. Every day is the same grind and grind and grind. Was that the toughest part of your law enforcement career. Absolutely I mean it was. It was when I first got into law enforcement later went into sheriff's department but it was as I started going to you. It was tough and it's a very negative environment where you're dealing with. You know criminals of all backgrounds and it's a subculture. It's it's a whole different culture with any prison of a society that most people in the world don't even know about there's rules and regulations. They have their own rules and regulations their own way to live a code that they live by and it is literally a doggy dog world. I mean you have to survive in their. Your life is on the line every minute of every day and it's it's a tough environment

At Trade Deadline, the Mets Keep Their Arms and Vow to Contend

"Can you believe that we got to the deadline and the mets turned out to be buyers because they sold nothing. They didn't trade syndergaard. They didn't Trae Zack Wheeler that in trade todd frazier. I guess they traded Jason Vargas yes but still the mets basically were buyers before the deadline. I don't get it Sarah. I don't get it and honestly even though people people were somewhat high on the mets entering this year. I don't think I even would have believed that if you told me that on March first hey we're going to get to the trade deadline. The mets are just GonNa get Marcus Stroman. Okay get rid of Jason Burs like I never I never would have believed that. I was pretty surprised I feel like they had some players that you know teams would've wanted. I think I even saw a rumor or about Luis avalon on twitter last night. I forget who it was saying. That teams are interested. I mean I don't understand necessarily not not doing those things and it's it's. It's just interesting. I mean now they're in this interesting situation with Zack Wheeler where I don't know that they're really even in the position where they would want to pay him the qualifying offer and if they if he does take it and if he doesn't then I'm sure they're not going to be in a position to really negotiate with what he's going to want. So that's an odd one one and I don't know I feel like they're just so many moves out there that can be made and one thing that we saw today is a lot of those kind of August I two thirty thirty first deals sort of happen today because they can't happen you know moving forward with the new way that it has this year like that Corey Dickerson trade to me seemed like a waiver kind of trade trade that we might see on August fifteenth and a previous year and is interesting with the mets didn't even attempt something like that. I mean one name that stuck out to me was John Ryan Murphy who is going going to the braves. I feel like you know he would probably be appreciably better for the mess right now. Then Wilson Ramos or Tomas Nido even if he were in a backup role you know maybe NATO's role and it was interesting to me that they didn't even come through on a on a move like that because if you are kind of claiming to go all in and then I would expect more on that side at the the very least so it's it's really an odd one to make one move and have it be like the big splash got this all going and then that's basically it. I would love to be the agent for Marcus Marcus Stroman right now because you talk about emotional leverage that he has on the mets during the wintertime. If you were to say you know what I'm looking for a contract and try to bully them into doing something because that deal was sort of the centerpiece of their whole summer kind of like Brodie van wagon in did last summer on behalf of Jacob degrom. He bullied the mets into an

Some people have went off on Dan you scare you could like this. Don't fucking make me be that way. To be here. 'cause they're like, hey, man. Stop. And then like this. Stop and get series in the minute. Don't do it. You know, I'm patient with people who actually I've been very patient with people who don't know you see me stopping do that. At least I yelled at you had a dream about grabbing a mother fucking. Physical violence on somebody. I like it's like I say a man some of it has been saying for years and put up a sign let people know because it is a it is an environment where close proximity and I do vibe off of people being in here. But I gotta find that middle ground. Some people just they don't understand. And there's been some people who have just didn't get it. I was very patient with them Kim Voight. He's brought in a friend his and he and he took it as this was just kind of open round table. Right, right. He thought this like city hall. Well, even that has rules because you know, sometimes you hit something like, you know, what I mean man and people should be like. Just sit back and just let go, but he's like I asked him. I looked at it gun say, you know, what I mean right now about look at the camera. One time. I remember this thing happened Like with with the. the. Really funny. You know, I gotta say. And I was very patient as like, sir. I don't mean to be rude. Stop in can't get him to shut the fuck. Leash. He'll fucking dog. Yeah. And I'm patient with because I don't have a sign in here. All right, but come on. That's why I went off Canard like idea. No, no. You know? I noticed I didn't say nothing like come on, man. Give him a break. I was like. Could. Said we will in a segment he's like. Phone. Me grow. You know? Do this evening, and he was just kind of he's like, yeah. Fucked up, and he was like. Yep. Yes. I understand got my system. If you let me go I'll just keep talking. Run out of steam. Can segments. Sure. Yeah. Man. The fuck. Easy to do. Go up somebody who and even hear what the fuck is this. And that's your boy, Marcus Marcus who had as a member your your crew. Yeah. So yours is tied the knot. Why would I did that did that? Okay. Came like, they came straight. "I don't know, man, like j I used to be like, I don't mind guys fighting and stuff like that. And I like, I don't even. But like the we were talking about lines earlier like that you, you know you're doing if that is true and I, I do intend on finding out if that is true, but a market Marcus. Like I've seen like, I know you're you let people questioned markets all the time. He would murder someone if that, like is going to be the case. Yeah, and if I hadn't heard that, but if that's true, then. Not guilty. Right? And they came out today Marcus. Got fined twenty five k. j. I got fined fifteen feels unwarranted. One of them just got a new deal, man. That's the surprise of fame, I guess. I don't know how they came to that conclusion. Like I know Marcus was definitely trying to inflict more damage. JR wasn't legged. Jet known was holding JR back really who Who today today are. are pushing for it was like Baynes or somebody who did he just like, we'll, we'll him in Baynes. We're like locked up like their arms. Got, and that was started it, right? Yeah. And Baynes kinda like like, tossed him off to get them off and they kind of went chest. The chest? Yeah. The market's just dove bomb in and just push them like when I was joking about in the playoffs when Marcus pushed him, that's actually what happened this time. Yep, a much better push this. Because I think he was like legitimately angry this time. So win win with JR said that, like that's why he came in with the strong push our after. He turned around and said, oh, that I'm unsure. I'd like think it was then because it wasn't like Margus came in with the push, I think to protect his teammate. And then I did turn around and start saying shit. And that's when Tatum and Terry, like went after Marcus, even even for a preseason for Marcus more, it seemed like there was a lot with it. I push. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I think he just January, like I think he didn't forget the Al Horford thing like off like. Off top. And then if he turned around and said that 'cause JR was saying shit. And he had this like devious smile on his face. So it's like that. And that's like, 'cause when he came up with the first push, like a ref was holding Marcus back and then the ref got quickly moved out of the way and Marcus Marcus Marcus then picked up more steam than the initial push and it was like, oh, no, this good. This could get bad quick. So I think it happened during that point in time. I mean, it could be. Yeah, I can't. That's a reason I've always been sour on cagey the player. Correct. I believe that to be true and that's a lie you. You don't cross if true and. During Marx's post game. He brought up his mom like unprompted. So that also leads me to believe that it obviously played a factor here. Yeah, I don't like that one bit. No, no. And I dunno j I used to be so fun likely while like he won the fucking title. He didn't have a shared on all that. That was great. People kept tweeting me that wo- JR peace and I don't care for roads when he's not just reporting facts because he was tearing people down as he's wild biases that like you that come out of nowhere because he's usually just like, here's the facts of deal that's happening. And then he's like, by the way, check out my column where I call him Brian. I call them Amir cat of. A man in pitch clothing. Adrian. So if people kept tweeting me the, he ready bashed JR couple years ago, I can't remember when it was, but it was like das- always played the role of this street tough. But the reality is. Which also doesn't make sense. Like he, he tried to play the angle like he went to a private school. Anyone who's halfway decent, a basketball ends up at a private school. Like, I don't know if that means you're not tough..

Have you ever been in particular when you're sleeping with a girl and she is pretty much put so many down on you that you're just like, what the fuck or I don't know. He's ever asked the girl in that to just not do this, not do that. So I just recently with the guy really just hooking up, do not want to him and you know, he said, I can't call invade. He said, I can't talk on his hair. He said, I can't kiss him on his neck and woman. Oh no, now's no scratching of that or aside sets, and we'll go from me and the various rough kind of than very passionate and everything I do so that in the bedroom and I've never had a situation where a guy was like, you can't do any of this like four or five different things. And I was just on top like, what the fuck do you want me to do? Make you come. Girls don't realize we get these calls a lot like he doesn't ever tag me on social media or he won't like give me his Instagram handle like he's hiding a whole other I want is so obvious call me babe because that's a term of endearment that he clearly uses with his actual girlfriend. No nails to Marcus Marcus dope. Pulling on his hair. No. Kissing on the neck for hickeys. Yeah. But it's almost one that's not so obvious, but she does say like it sealer, she knows him there hooking up. Yeah. Well, I always think of the people who call in. I think a lot of it's often like college age kids. So I feel like you're running in the same circles out with the New York thing bar, and we kinda keep each other's number here and they like duty. We go to the same to parties. You'd be surprised how much you can overlap in New York. Even he used to run into people. Again, I'm like, fuck stay notes. I had dinner once die wreck next to a girl I had hooked up with before, and she was just looking at me and I just look straight ahead. The whole time pretended didn't anything the entire time. Yeah. Nope. Those horses, they put the hundred. I, I mean, that is very clearly what's going on here. I, I don't think any guy. There could be accusation if you're like, what? What's your question is? Why guys have boundaries she has if if you've ever been with a girl, I think girls are much more prone to have boundaries things. We wanna do fortunate horrible. I mean, I got. "That was that was spectacular because marcus marcus marcus was sort of the running back version of jerry rice he wasn't fast it just it felt like nobody caught him from behind and you reverse field and it i mean the raiders were far better team than the redskins a friend of mine who works in the nfl said if he gambled he would have bet his house on the raiders that night because he said when the raiders came on the field and the redskins game on the field the attitude the presence everything about the raiders said we're going to kill you and he just said you know it was a great run by marcus had it been a closer game maybe you know we single that play out a little bit more but that's that's one of the most iconic place for me in super bowl history yeah paulie a great play could also be a bad play as well when joe flacco threw seventy passive jacoby jones the two thousand twelve when it was broncos versus ravens i'm not trying to pile todd hear what i'm saying is the broncos were about to go to the super bowl at and they were gonna have peyton manning at home right wasn't gonna go to new orleans festival and the defensive back missed it new with yeah i was the worst i was tears all bad is that still is he playing anymore was that the last game he played more does that sound right.

"Nor are you like fully on the other side of wherever you expected to be she says to be an indian in my own village to be free as no white man as ever free and it is to live behind a wall so she is like deliberately sheltering herself from this out side world that she is now aware of and not okay with but she also has that knowledge and i guess what she's talking about being free in her own gym talks about this too i think appreciating what they have more for having experienced what is out there it's just a really fascinating like these younger characters who are in this transitionary moment and how they interact with mark they are all more complicated and interesting than marcus marcus this guy who's just kinda like slowly dying and doesn't know it and is coming to understand that everybody who lives here like really fights to live here and really wants their home to succeed and and be well and is willing to give anybody anything to make that happen but there's this temptation to go out and and good reason i think for some of the characters to go out and see what else the world has to offer but a lot of folks see the world kind of flick taking their little world and wearing it away sure so then the the other stuff that i just liked about the book is the language is really strong i think the simplicity gives it.

"Defense that are kind of veteran player developments and rozier who like you know i was a colder on earlier this season like toward the end the season where he was like he was obviously promising player but like his personal offense just was still relatively inefficient from from game to game as just pull it all together and now all the shots are falling like this small sample size sure like you don't want to just say oh he's rive but a playoff developments over the course of several series multiple series tends to stick wins instead of it's not just you know one like one or two games in the playoffs in a way that like none are he's he's showing actual decision making and like being able to run on offense in like kind of difficult difficult circumstances where this seems to be something you can trust and obviously marcus marcus smart is back and ruining plays and just stonewalling joel embiid joel embiid in in the post of whatever inch marcus ridiculous ez's delay to watch and like has like all the scrap or whatever that like like in tj mukalla whatever let on marcus late just guards every position on the floor right yeah i wanna talk about lebron a second but all of the things that you mentioned the celtics also seem to dovetail with this growing narrative which i think the numbers back up as well as the eye test the brad stevens is one of the best coaches now you know we knew that he was already one of the best coaches but he seems to have taken the ability to not just an xs and os level which is also doing on some of those late game plays you know inbound plays that basically helped seal the some wins for them but also you know this idea that a great coach is able to coax whether it's through finding the right fit finding you know just motivation being able to coax the best performances out of his talent and this was this building to be brad stevens.
