Fresh update on "marcus freeman" discussed on Ben Shapiro

"Though I have disdain staying for Notre Dame because of my roots I have nothing but you know reverence for their history obviously. lot Spent a of time there too. I did that was unbelievable. But anyway Marcus Freeman I saw one sign our coach is better looking than your coach. I mean he's he's one of the best looking guys ever to be a major. You think so do you? I think so yeah. I mean you know I mean I don't know he's a good -looking guy. I mean if that speaks to you it speaks to you. I don't know does that matter? No it doesn't matter. I mean they also had Lou Holtz who looks like Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies. So I mean you know you don't have to be a great -looking man to be a successful coach. But I don't know is that distracting when you have a particularly handsome coach? Distracting to who though? I have no idea. To the team? I don't think so. Student body in Notre Dame is jazzed by their good -looking coach. I can't wait to see this matchup here. It's just about to kick off right now. Notre Dame Ohio State. You know this Notre Dame team and I could sense the frustration with Brian Kelly and why he took the LSU job. Because he had gone as far as you could possibly push Notre Dame. Twice he got into the play. Well once was the BCS championship game the other it got in the playoff and both times they got routed you know by these SEC and powerhouses he had gone as far as you can. But I don't know Marcus Freeman after start. Seems to have gotten this Notre Dame. I just curious if Notre Dame actually wins today. They beat Ohio State. Huge huge win for the for the program in Freeman. Like it. He came out and like you said he started Rocky. So everybody was like oh well what are we doing here. Right. And kudos to the you know the university this way. There are no instant winners or you don't come right in and to a national championship. You have to change the culture. You have to bring the players in that speak to what you're trying to do offensively defensively have to bring the right staff in all of these things take time. And in the short period of time Notre Dame has become one of those powers again. And meanwhile you got Ryan Day's situation. Talk about a guy that could be on the hot seat after back -to -back years losing to Michigan. Losing to Michigan at Ohio State that'll put you on the hot That's why Harbaugh has been on the hot seat. Well there was a great coach at Ohio State John Cooper. Couldn't beat Michigan. In fact when Trestle took over he said we're gonna beat Michigan. I think he lost once. When you're hired at Michigan or Ohio State yeah you must say in your welcoming press conference. Oh he did it in a basketball game. You have to put that out there so the people know what's going on. Right because you that means I understand. That's I know I get it. National championships. Blah blah blah. Beat Michigan. Yep. Because that's why my predecessor was fired because he couldn't beat Michigan. Can't do it. Yeah so this is a huge game again for Ohio State. Their quarterback is off to a okay start. A little shaky in the first game. Played much better the last couple of games but they get the ball first. How do you like those Notre Dame jerseys? They almost look like Oregon out there. They do almost look like Oregon. Is it me or am I looking at Oregon with that color scheme? I mean they still have the gold helmets but still that that's Oregon -ish. I don't know. When do you have classic uniforms? Can't we just stay with them? No man times change. Aztecs uniforms are I mean that helmet is gorgeous. It's great. I miss the old one. I love our old one. But Yeah. that's because I played in the old one. So you know times change. Everything changes man. You just got to go with Alright so right off the bat Ohio State moving the ball against Notre Dame. I get a sense we're gonna see quite a few points in this game today. It feels like the type of game where it'll be a lot of points put up. Alright. Shoot up shootout style. Now some other games that are going on right now we got Iowa and Penn State both undefeated. We mentioned how many battles between 3 and 0 teams today. Iowa checking it at number 24 in the latest AP poll. Penn State is at number seven. Is Franklin going to get Penn State back in the mix? He's been knocking on the door haven't we the last couple years? Yeah he has. But he hasn't had quite the quarterback to get over the hump. Yeah it's imperative to have that guy in college football. I talked about it earlier having a quarterback when you're competing at that level in these power five conferences and with eyes on the college football playoffs you have to have the guy under the center be formidable at a high clip high level. So we went back to the Clemson and Alabama days when you're seeing Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence and then you're seeing a Jalen Hurts and I mean you know. Bryce Young, Mack Jones. All of them. All starters in the NFL. All of them. So that's why you win national championships. You think Justin Fields is fixable? I think he is. I think they need to... Because Ohio State quarterbacks it's not pretty at the NFL level. You gotta remember it wasn't pretty for Miami quarterbacks No. Right? The irony was the quarterback that Miami had right before Bernie Kosar they won that first championship with a guy named Jim Kelly. They went to the USFL and then on to stardom in the NFL. They never had... I mean Vinnie Testavordi wasn't terrible. He had a solid NFL career. you When get to the next level it's all about the team you go to and the willingness of the coach to make a change that fits your skill set. Well that's a hundred... singing I'm your tune I've always said this right? Identify what you do well and it puts you in a position to succeed. Kyle Shanahan was one of the first coaches to do something like that when he took his storied and history offense that his dad ran. Gary Kubiak ran zone offense and he changed for it RG3 because of the talent when he was at Washington because of his talent. RPOs became a read option all those things became a viable weapon that weren't in his classic playbook and they excelled. RG3 was co -rookie of the year that year they made it to the playoffs they won seven in a row. He beat out Andrew Luck for offensive rookie of the year then he got hurt and it's a testament to you know that and now that became the thing right so no one in the pros had a run style offense for quarterbacks. Alright I want to talk to you about another NFL team on the other side this is Fox football Saturday. College football fans your season

"I'm Jim Forbes. Aaron judge did not use the long ball for the Yankees against Tampa on Saturday, but he was effective nonetheless as he hits two singles in the first inning. That's right, two singles. The Yankees got 6 runs and just kind of cruised onto a ten to three win over the raise. So that's a good pickup win for the Yankees as they beat Corey Kluber and they will now move to the series finale with Luis patino pitching against Domingo Herman on Sunday. And how about the mets, they had a big inning of their own. They cash in with 8 runs in the fourth inning down in Miami and that's the difference against the Marlins. Mets win 11 to three, they'll wrap up the series with Taiwan walker pitching on Sunday. Tennis news. Number one seat igis is your champion in the women's final at the U.S. open. No surprise she is the 7th woman in the open era to start three and O or better in major finals. The men's final, of course, is Sunday. Let's move to the NFL with the first full weekend of play continuing Sunday. We've got the jets at home at 1 o'clock against Baltimore. The Giants are in Tennessee against the Titans at four 25. The jets with a roster move they put left tackle Duane Brown on injured reserve and they're hopeful he'll return for week 5. He is a 5 time pro bowler. College football news number one Alabama escapes and they beat Texas in Austin 20 to 19 Appalachian state shocking number 6 Texas a and M 1714 and Marshall over 8th ranked Notre-Dame in south Ben shocking upset 26 to 21. That means Marcus Freeman and the Irish has lost his first three games going back to last year's bowl loss. That's your Bloomberg sports update. I'm Dan gutowski. You're listening to masters in business with Barry riddles on Bloomberg radio. I'm Barry Ritz, you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio, my extra special guest this week is Kristen biddle Michelle, head of North American investments for city global wealth, which manages more than $800 billion in worldwide client assets, let's talk a little bit about inflation. You mentioned 8 and a half percent inflation rate, it seems like when we look around the world, a lot of that inflation is peak and past us. We look at the Baltic dry index and gas prices and oil prices and go down the list of commodities that seem to be coming down in price, home sales are declining, although rent remain high, let's start talking about where we are in this rate tightening cycle. What was your takeaway from the Jackson hole festival of speeches and Jerome Powell's it's kind of surprising that anybody thinks he didn't communicate what was happening, but it seems like the market was taken a little by surprise. Don't you think that there's a debate though, so I think there's this question around what we want the fed to do, what we think the fed should do versus what they're telling us. They're going to do, right? So I think that chair Powell has been very clear in terms of what they're going to do. Over the summer months, we got that rally off the June lows, and some of it was kind of peak bearish positioning. Some of the abatement, like you mentioned in terms of commodity prices in particularly with gasoline, and then Q two earnings were pretty resilient. We thought inflation was going to impact a lot more than it did. There are a lot of surprises in terms of top line revenue growth. And so then I think what happened was we started sneaking in these narratives, the market did about, you know, maybe there's a fed pivot. Maybe the fed will be dovish. We didn't see that at city global wealth. We did not see any signs that the fed was going to change course, and so I think in Jackson hole that very short, very deliberate speech, was one where it was make no mistake about the fact that we are going to continue to tighten that inflation expectations while not out of control yet, but at a level of two and a quarter two and a half looking far out, we need to bring them down to two and our job is not yet done. We need to make sure that we're taking that action. I think the other interesting thing too, that may have been one of the catalysts for the volatility that we saw on Friday and Monday was really this lack of mentioning a soft landing. Chair Powell in his past couple of speeches and public comments, always said that a soft landing was possible. Here that was absent. So it was much more about invoking Volcker and also just looking at this is going to create some pain and he admitted that. So I think their trajectory is very clear through the rest of this year in terms of the tightening path that they're on. Right. I think 50 plus 75 plus 75 plus whatever happens September 2022, that's the end of the soft landing. He's telling you, we're going to really throttle back in order to make sure we could get the toothpaste back in the tube, but that leads to an interesting question, we're talking about narratives and what we hope is a little bit of wishful thinking going on. But, you know, my perspective has been the fed was late to start raising rates at the very least they should have gotten off their emergency funding sooner, it looks like now they're late to recognize the peak and inflation and they probably don't have to do a whole lot more. Are they going to be causing unnecessary pain? Have they already one can they declare victory and go home or are they going to just keep pounding away? And either a mild recession or perhaps something worse. Yeah, and I think that's one of the challenges in terms of, you know, this is where economics degrees really come in handy in terms of breaking down all of these data points, but they were very specific that their goal was headline inflation. We all talked about the demand side of the equation, the supply side, what's in their control, what's out of their control. And chair Powell again was very, very direct in terms of, nope, the whole thing is our mandate, right? So whether it's supply side demand side, we need to make sure that we get this under control. So obviously we're seeing some relief in the commodity sector, but more broadly, it's whether or not how quickly are we going to see that number come down, and even if it's at, let's say, 6 and a half, 6% by yearend, that's nowhere close, right? To their ultimate target. And so continuing on this path, I think the challenge that the fed's in, is when you think of tightening financial conditions, we don't see the full impact of that until out probably 1218 months. Right. So there is this concept of what they're doing now is not really going to flow through to everyone, both the consumer as well as corporations until several months out. And so what does that mean for consumer spending? What does that mean for all of the decisions that the consumer is making which drives 65% of the U.S. economy? And what does it mean for corporations as they're making decisions and so in Q two, we heard a lot that recession wasn't the base case, but they're planning. I think it's going to be really fascinating. I think we're going to pivot from, I shouldn't use that term. Become a dirty word. Become a dirty word. So 5 letter words. I think we're going to change the dialog from what was obsessive about the fed and debate about what they're going to do and what is the terminal fed funds rate to now obsession about earnings. Coming up, we continue our conversation with Kristen bitterly Michelle head of North American

I just feel like On a season where you lose your quarterback and you win four games. Everything is put into okay, what's free agency going to be And then what are they going to do in the draft? Right? And then how's the team shape up? And it just makes the off season so much longer? Because you're trying to cling. To any opportunity that you have and You know all of that, with the ring of Honor, the uniforms, the social media engagement. C in a week to you go to Minnesota. Minnesota's not minutes a couple of years ago, but stats of Big 10 school that's brutal for that team, man. Now to your Irish. They are home to Toledo. How about the Cub Cat product? Michel Mayor? Nine catches on 13 targets Rock 120 yards and a touchdown on the win over Florida State. He has led the Irish in receiving three straight games going back to last season. He's a mop grown man out there that you had a couple of drops. Gotta get rid of that, but he's a phenomenal player. And I mean the big weapon that offense. What do you think about their performance overall? I thought it was good. I look, I think they let their foot off the gas a little bit. Maybe got a little more conservative Marcus Freeman likes to do. I think you're still getting used to his defense. He's got a lot of You know, different positions and you know that he calls things so I think that can be confusing if it's kind of your first year doing things, but I think they'll settle in. Look, I think Florida State I think it's a good thing for college football. That Florida State is back to being relevant? Yes, Mackenzie Milton thing was great. So look, Was it perfect? No, but there's a lot of teams that I ask Washington how they they played like crap and got the l write their name. There's some things that they want to work on. But they gather out of there with the victory and in the morning cleaner this week, we're working through the Kelsey Chevrolet College Football Weekend preview. I tries to bounce back from a blowout loss in Iowa with a home game vs Idaho. Who's your quarterback Michael Pennington Jr threw three picks last week. He could have thrown 45 or six, I thought Indiana turned in what for expectations and rankings, turning one of the most disappointing performances in the opening weekend that everybody back back on that team. And either that or I was like, I mean, that wasn't one of my big shockers the weekend. I know they had to defensive scores. Okay, You throw that into consideration, but the end of day with Indiana having everybody back in a healthy Michael panics. They did not play well. Purdue takes on UConn. What a message Stores Following last week's lost the Holy Cross. Huskies coach Randy Edsall announced he would retire at the end of the season. Then the next day decided. "Back to the jungle Sean Pendergast with you. On a labor Day Monday. Hope you having a great long weekend. Good to be with you Plenty of football to get into. If you wanna grab a line, 855 to 1 to four. CBS if you want to get in 855212. 4227. We are efforting Steve Berlin, former NFL quarterback When we, uh when we find him, we will put him up and we'll chat some some NFL football in in just a few minutes, um, jumping back over to college football from the weekend. I mean, there were a lot of storylines. I only really got into the Notre Dame game from last night in the open, cause I was so fired up about it. Everybody still fired up about Brian Kelly's poor delivery of a John McKay line. Um But I fail to point out that we we learned once again. It's just Alabama's world and we're living in it. I thought field Yates of ESPN dot com had a pretty poignant tweet about this over the weekend. Because I think there's a lot of teams out there that we're hopeful, you know, kind of lurking in that next layer below Ohio State and Alabama and Clemson. Couple other teams replacing quarterbacks. Notre Dame's replacing their quarterback going. Hey, you know what this might be The year we we might be able to sneak in. We might be able to get Alabama this year. Yeah. And field. Yates tweeted. So Alabama lost the Heisman Trophy winner, another first round wide receiver, a first round quarterback and running back. Drafted offensive. Three drafted offensive lineman from the best online in football. A first round cornerback the M V P of the national championship. The top assistant coach in college football. And they just come back like it's like nothing happened. They just come back like nothing happened. That's exactly what they did. On Saturday. They They took. They took Miami to the wood shed on Saturday. And it was it was over in the first five minutes. That's that's the thing about dominant teams like that, like you get geared up to watch it all day. Like I was super excited to watch. Alabama and Miami. If nothing else, watching those two uniforms running around in the same field for the first, I think for the first time since they played each other in the national championship game back in the early nineties. Back in old Spider. It was an old school Gino Torretta joint back in the day. And so I was excited, You know, maybe who knows? Maybe Derek King makes a few plays. Maybe Miami hangs around and it's a fun Saturday afternoon. I mean, after all, Bill O'Brien is calling the place for Alabama now. Maybe their offense starts to look a little bit like the Texans offenses did with Bill O Brien running them in Houston. No, no, no, no, not so fast. Not so fast. My friend Alabama game was over in the 1st 10 minutes by halftime. It's 27 nothing. My favorite part of the game. My favorite part of the game was when it was 27 nothing. In Alabama cause the turnover You know, they've got that turnover chain. That they've been using, like the last five years to celebrate turnovers. And by the way, I like I'm not anti prop. I think you know whatever you need to do, especially cause that was in Miami team that was kind of rebuilding at the time. So you need to get some inanimate objects that feel like they're carrots that you're hanging out there that you're dangling out there for the players, so every time we get a turnover, whoever got the turnover gets to wear the turnover chain. There's just It's just funny to me. When they're down 27 nothing and they're celebrating the turnover like it's the like. It's the glass egg that you get at the end of the year. For, uh, for winning the championship. In college football. All right, we'll talk more about that in just a second. Good to be joined right now by a 17. 17 year. NFL quarterback former pro Bowler won a Super Bowl ring with the Cowboys back in the early nineties. And former Notre Dame quarterback as well, joining me on the program. Steve Berlin joining me here on the Jim Roam show, Steve Appreciate you making some time. How you doing? Doing pretty well, you know, considering Things could have been worse last night for the fighting Irish, but, uh, since it happened the way it did. I'm feeling lot better today, dude. Same I just I don't know if you know, Steve. I don't know if Stew our producer include you in but I'm a 91. Notre Dame alum myself, And in fact, when I visited Notre Dame my senior year in high school, the game that I went to was the first win of the Lou Holtz era against Purdue. Would you want, which involved Steve Berlin, a quarterback. Heck, yeah, yeah, the first one. The first wind could have been Lou Holtz's first game that year, which was against both Shim Backlund. Jim Harbaugh. Uh, Michigan came into South Bend, and we really are playing them all day. But we We lost by one point our kicker that year was a guy. You may have heard of John Carney about 35 years in the NFL, But he, uh he missed an extra 350.35 yarder to win the game for us that day, but, um, we found a way to get it going against Purdue. That's right. Yep, Yep. No, I remember all of it, man. I remember all of it's great to talk to you. So let's start there with that game last night. You brought it up. What's your early read on this? This version of Notre Dame football under Brian Kelly, the 2021 version coming off of the playoff appearance from last year. Well, as you know, uh, the first game is always real hard to figure out, especially when you've got Some new coaches in the mix and new players. There's a lot of figuring out to do you know defensively I was a little bit disappointed. Really thought that Marcus Freeman, uh, would do a better job against, you know, you know, in all honesty will be considered an inferior Florida state team. But We always know that Florida State has great athletes, and that was in Tallahassee in the hype for that game, NATIONAL TV So you got away all that into consideration and, you know, take it for what it was. I got to win. A national TV or a pillow back who, you know, even though he's an experienced guy, senior Jack Cone had a really impressive start. I I think that's a little bit misleading. What happened last night? I think he's going to be a good, consistent quarterbacks for us. But I did a couple of games at Wisconsin the last couple years, and, you know, he never put up those kind of numbers. Now. Maybe it was a product of the system. I don't know, but really solid performance last night, and that was very encouraging for everybody and Hopefully, you can play at that level because if he does, I think our defense will get under control. And I think our running backs will will be allowed to really get after it because I think they were trying to put the pressure last night on Jack Cone and trying to shut down the run game, which they did. And in Jack Cone stepped up as a quarterback has to do in that situation, so a lot of encouraging things, but I hope to see improvement as we go along here for sure. No doubt. What did you think of what? What do you think of Kyle Hamilton? The junior safety. I'm I'm 100% certain will be playing in the NFL in 2022. Yeah, There's no doubt about it. You talked to anybody that that evaluates elite talent at the college level and pro level and then the first name that comes out when you talk about Notre Dame? Is Kyle Hamilton. He's a He is a a difference maker to the extreme. Defensively, he's got the size and the athletic ability overall. And the leadership that you look for out of a safety safety's have to be a leader. When you think of great safeties in the NFL. You think you guys like Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater Riot Woodson. Those guys are all the guys that were very confident leaders as well as big time playmakers, a key points in games. Charles Woodson's another one. Uh, those are guys that that I think that a guy like Cal Hamilton coming out of college. Would be hoping to become a player of that caliber, and I think he's got the ability to do that if you can stay home. Steve Berlin. Joining me on the Jim Roam show. Uh, Steve, I want to shift over to get in some NFL with you here, and I'm curious as someone you had a long career in the NFL. You played into your late thirties. How remarkable is it to you? That 40 has become kind of the achievable benchmark for starting quarterbacks and particularly Tom Brady, that it's 44. He's winning Super Bowls like just Can you put us in a quarterback shoes as to how remarkable it is that he's doing what he's doing? Well, it's not remarkable in my opinion, and I'm a big Brady fan. But if you think about the reason why all the there's a reason why all these quarterbacks.

"Like people call me Jerry Jeff a lot of times It's it's Carrie. Jeff. I don't get offended. It's just funny. And oh, My friend Austin. Elmore was telling me that The person who's next on the line. Mo Eggar. Did a whole bit about how people call him Mo Edgar. Hey, Mo. What's going on, So So, is this still happening? Happens all the time. People called you, Mo Edgar, do you do you try to more forcefully enunciate Mo Eggar when you say Meow Eggar on the air because of it. I tried to, but it often it often doesn't matter. You know, people put the s a tandem by name, and they put the D n a lot of my name. You know, it happens almost right on the Tracy Jones. He always used to refer to Ham and Eggers even refer to that as well. I thought he was talking about you the whole time, because no talk about anybody. So, but you know you don't you don't run into people named Edgar at all. Hardly any more that just go by Ed Do you have you thought about shortening your last name to just mow Ed? Oh, no, I have not. But I've got the whole weekend in front of me. Yeah, indeed. And speaking of the weekend, man, We got a busy just a flat out busy weekend wild card weekend in the NFL and then a national championship football game to look forward to on Monday night. And then the news this morning that Marcus Freeman is going to be the new defensive coordinator at the University of Notre Dame next season. Man and Austin was kind of promoting. That is bad news for you See football? Well, indeed it there's gonna be a void there. They will fill it, but I said, Look at it this way. For you See, it means that their program it's been so successful is high profile enough that they're coordinators and their assistant coaches and their coach is a matter of fact, Luke Fickell are being regarded as valuable commodities moving up to a bigger and better job, which means that the UC defensive coordinator's job Is going to be filled by somebody who's looking to really, really elevate their career. And they're going to get some really good candidates, right? Yeah, This is the inevitable byproduct of winning, um and certainly did see alternative and the remarkable thing. Um, if you go back over the last three years, they have to 11 win seasons and then obviously what they did this year, and over those three years they had the same coach. Offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and quarterback. That is a remarkable amount of continuity, especially at this level. You know, the group of five level where you know people are always looking to make the leap elsewhere. So I said, I think before last year, every game that Marcus Freeman coaches that you see after 2018 felt like house money to me. You always knew that something else was on the horizon. Maybe he was gonna go to the front of the line of become ahead code somewhere. Maybe he was gonna go become a defensive coordinator. So this was always inevitable from the UC perspective. You know, you wish you wasn't going to a place that Cincinnati plays against next year, But, um, it's an opportunity that he couldn't turn down and this is to me. The next step in this program is OK. You've had success when People start to leave, whether they're you know great players jumping to the NFL. Or assistant coaches or even the head coach. Do you maintain the level that they've reached? And you know, first of all their defense next season? There's a lot of dudes that a lot of people would like to coach. Second of all. You. Come here you succeed. You get phone calls from places like Notre Dame and L s U And you know, Marcus Freeman had multiple opportunities. He could have gone the Ellis. You could have gone to Notre Dame, so there will be no shortage of candidates. Of qualified candidates, and whoever those whoever they ultimately settle on is going to get a chance to coach a defense that should be absolutely loaded next year by Galan is sitting here listening this smiling because he's a big Notre Dame fan. Big Private Irish October 2nd bear Cats and Irish in South Bend. It should be fun Gonna be huge, Huge today wild card weekend in the NFL. Any any games that you're particularly looking forward to watching, listening, whatever experiencing them. Yeah, I think I think all these games are kind of interesting for for their own reasons. Um, you know, I think I think Baltimore in Tennessee, you know, we had a rematch. We have a rematch of a game played last year between these two teams. Baltimore offensively kind of feels like it is hitting its stride at the right time. They did it against bad defense is Tennessee has a bad defense. You get Ella in Seattle, the middle game today, which is, you know, the third time These two teams have met you get a couple of former Bangles going against each other. Andrew Whitworth was carted off the field on November the 15th when these two teams played against each other with the knee injury, and he's gonna play today it could be blocking Carlos Dunlap. I think that's that's pretty interesting. Tom Brady has never been in the postseason. As a wild card. He's going to be in the postseason as a wild card today against the Washington football team that had a losing record. Tampa Bay was awesome this year against everybody who wasn't the New Orleans Saints. You get the situation with the Buffalo Bills, who finally get a home playoff game first time in a quarter century, But only 6000 fans can go against them and Indianapolis team that's got a veteran quarterback and I think, frankly, not that many holes you get the game between the Browns and Steelers in the Season. The last two times the Cleveland Browns have played in the playoffs. They played the Pittsburgh Steelers. They're gonna be doing so without their head coach. They clinched a playoff berth against Pittsburgh. So I certainly think that's interesting. New Orleans in Chicago is probably gonna be. I think the worst game of the weekend because I just don't think the barest can score and I think the Syrians have a really good in complete team. But the Saints are sort of in Super Bowl of bust mentality. They've had three consecutive years where their postseason loss Been absolutely heartbreaking. So, yeah, I think there's a lot of really cool story lines to the first ever six game wildcard weekends. Yeah, I really liked that Buffalo Bill's team. What I saw from them really impressed me, especially late in the season. Here. There's no doubt about it. They certainly have something going there. A lot of people got it wrong with Josh Allen, the quarterback today took out of Wyoming in the same year that Sam Donald went to the Jets and Baker Mayfield, one to the Cleveland Browns and Josh Rosen went to the the Cardinals and Lamar Jackson to the Ravens. The guy that I think a lot of people have had was skeptical about was just Alan, who's turned into a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback. He's very athletic. He's got a hell of an arm. Um, the bills you do kind of wonder at the end of the season. They got fat against bad teams, and they got a lot of credit for beating Pittsburgh. But the following week, the Bangles beat the Pittsburgh Steelers and then you know they ran roughshod over Denver over New England. They house Miami last week, and the Dolphins are pretty good. But, yeah, you know, I think if there's a team in the A F C that can hang with the Kansas City Chiefs. It's Buffalo. And so there's a big part of me hopes. We see that matchup. Well, we We learned the news yesterday of something that's inevitable for all of us. This this life in this world eventually ends. And what an incredible story. Was written by the late Tommy Lasorda in his 93 years 73 of them spent with either the Brooklyn or the L. A Dodgers as some as some former fashion It was. It was sad news. What timing? What a run, right? Yeah. What are run? Uh, and it's funny. A lot of people have referred to him as a character and a personality..

"Calm. The headliner of the early evening is Marcus Freeman is departing Clifton and you see his defensive coordinator and taking that same position. At Notre Dame. Look, it's Notre Dame. One. It's Notre Dame to its gonna be a lot more money and three. I'm happy for him for that bites for you see football, but that's the reality of this situation right now. Jay Bob Hicks moments ago on Twitter they find safety tweeting will see you soon. In reference to the fact that you see travels to South Bend Circle your calendars, October 2nd 2021 at Notre Dame Stadium. The bear Cats and Fighting Irish have met once on the football field. 101 121 years ago was back in October of 1900. Notre Dame winning that game. ESU now the second meeting, and Marcus Freeman will be looking out onto the field and preparing a game plan against Dez writer and a very talented You see football team that has the has the potential. Look, Marcus Freeman or not, and I don't mean to dismiss his impact, but you see with what it has coming back. Is going to be at least a top 15. Probably well could be a preseason top 10 team by next season. If they hold that into an October 2nd match up, you could realistically be looking at a matchup between two top 10 teams in under Dame Stadium Look fickle is the head coach on one side. Brian Kelly is the head coach on the other, Marcus Freeman, standing next to him, calling her names. Defense. You could also if you looked into a crystal ball Don't wanna get too far ahead of myself. Well, now that that would be depressing because my thought was what would it blow anybody away and I'm reading Chad Brendel on Twitter Bear Cat Journal. I mentioned Who knows? Maybe Marcus from it comes back here some day, and that I would envision is a scenario down the road. Not soon of Luke Fickell, perhaps leaving at some point down the road and Marcus Freeman coming back as a head coach. The U. C bear cats, But let's go across that bridge in Don't Let's not put cards in front of horses between now and then. Earlier in the week On Monday, Mike Brown announced that Zach Taylor was coming back Mike saying quote Our fans wanted a fresh new direction two years ago, and that is what we aim to do. I aim to do and hiring a bright, energetic head coach and Zach Taylor. One. Disappointing that there was no news conference held. It is amazing to me the lack of visibility and accountability from the likes of Mike and Duke and the organization when it comes to stuff like this, and to drop the line of basically Paraphrasing You wanted it. You got it. What do you want from us? Yeah, it is a little bit grating from from where I sit. But on Monday, you found out Zach Taylor was coming back. I wonder tonight Friday night, 6 26. Having the week that think about it. How you feel about it. Joe Burrow QB one was on with Colin Cowherd yesterday on his Fox Sports radio show and was asked about Zach Taylor. He said this You know, I think that is is gonna be a great coach for a long time. You know, I'm happy to be in the position that I'm in and tow helped build this organization. But it's going to be on sax back. He's He's the leader of what we're trying to do, and he's awesome. Joe Burrow yesterday with Colin Cowherd. We take you back about a month or so ago, Maybe six weeks or so ago. This is Giovanni Bernard, veteran respected leader in the Bengals roster, and in that locker room. Giovanni Bernard said this when asked about Zach Taylor. Have 100% faith Coach Taylor. He's done unbelievable job. I've had my conversations with them. And you know to have what's happened here throughout the two years here into still come here each and every single day with a smile. Being a leader shows a lot to me and a lot of other players as well. So it's just one of those things that people don't really speak about. But it should be known that you know the time coach that he is how he you know he cares. First players. No matter what circumstances, no matter how many wins or losses we have, he's I that just comes in here each and every single day ready to work. Giovanna Bernard about a month or so ago on Zach Taylor. Zach has two years in the books is Bengals coach. 6 25 and one those six wins represent A tie with David Shula. For the fewest in a two year period. In the history of the Bengals franchise. David Shula, 1993 94 coach, The Bengals team that went three and 13 and then three and 13. That was David Klingler and Jeff Blake quarterbacking. That was Harold Green as the running back. That was Carl Pickens, Jeff Queary players like that. That team won six games in consecutive seasons. That until this year had been the low point the fewest number of wins in consecutive seasons in the history, the franchise that now has company with This 2020 2019 Bengals team coached by Zach Taylor. I sat here and I said with with rock during the round table show based on Joe Burrows status contract. Rookie deal. That at the end of this season number two You had to have a definitive decision made one way or another. You could not risk going into your number three and potentially having to move on from Zach if they didn't play well, because you would have been burned a thirds or a second season.

Notre Dame Lands Marcus Freeman At Defensive Coordinator

"Just ended the last hour talking about the reports. That bo pollini is going to get four. Four million dollar lump sum payoff to to after being fired as the defensive coordinator and there's been a lot of speculation and even some reports that the That lsu was on the verge of hiring. Marcus freeman from the university of cincinnati. But pizza animal has just reported that he is going to notre dame instead of always breaking stories literally as he's coming on the air here pete great to have you on. This was a much watched battle between a number of schools for marcus freeman. Good afternoon and tell us what happened. Well i this is what one of the more public and hotly contested coordinator Tussles that i can recall in In in recent seasons anyway there's been a few a few of them over the years and You know we'll we'll we'll never know only only the only the folks in the grotto will really know How much notre dame has a market because their private but you know. Lsu lsu is ready to pay him Both leaning plus money and You know he went to both places this week. And i think at the end for For marcus freeman. Who is cincinnati. Thirty three might be thirty four year. Old defensive coordinator and the architect of that That great cincinnati defensive wanted this year one the afc and then Loss to george on a last second field goal in the in the peach bowl. I think for for marcus. There was geography and You know there will be some stability right. You got notre dame brian. Kelly is just steady ship there and You know there was a lot attractive. I think about. Lsu they were. I think on for twenty four until defense or some some number that would be easily improved upon with some new blood in better schemes. And obviously they probably have more raw talent down there so i mean really a really a compelling decision for a bright young coach. Call that we're going to be hearing a lot about in the In the next couple of the next couple of years course the next guy will probably not be thrilled to because all the attention was on freeman. But where does she go next. That's a that's a really good question really. Good question You know they they. They made hard shortages at At freeman and he was he was clearly be The target and the guy they wanted. And i i don't know From ahead who. Who were they go next. You know there's a lot of people have preserved our net at mississippi state right now Chain being made around adam this week. There's been rumblings if texas is going to go after in the chris ash Won a national title As buyers defensive coordinator at ohio state six seven years ago. It was the head coach at rutgers in the news at texas last year. And she's got a lot better on defense under wraps. I think that's that's another name right. Now let's That's brewing through the The the defensive coordinator mill show there will There will be options. And if we know and scott woodward they will be addressed.

"Sounds good 23 minutes away from eight o'clock. We're going back to the cold play Well, twice in the same show, huh? All right. My name is my leg her in for Lance McAllister. This is sports, talking to Tuesday evening land to be back on Thursday. Justin Williams covers you see football and basketball for the athletic and there's there's a lot to get to The aftermath of the Peach Bowl. You got schools coming after Marcus Freeman. You have players making decisions about whether they're going to stay at school or jump to the NFL and the basketball team that use he's lost five straight games. And that's not supposed to happen. So there's a lot to discuss. Justin is here. You could subscribe to the athletic and you could read his work. He doesn't awesome job and you can also follow him on Twitter and Williams underscore Justin. How you doing? I'm doing great. How are you? I'm good. I'm better now that you're here. Let me uh, let me start with the Peach Bowl. Third until you got to run the ball, right? Yeah, but it's bigger than that. Reno right? Cause it Z to place where they didn't let the play clock right down. And, you know, Yeah. You can't really go back and do revisionist sister. I get that. But if you just let those Play class run down. Everything else remains the same. You're looking at. What a minute 20. I think for that third down, basically, If they would have done it right. They could have cut a minute off of what George got when they got the ball back. So instead of getting with a minute, 30 they get it with about 30 seconds left on the 20, and they have to go down and score field goal. Now, you know who knows what happened, But it certainly would have been a lot tougher and Then you know, on the other side of it, if if they make a complete that 32 or there, Michael younger help Pierce. They're just they somehow you know, through that pass, you get a get a completion. I mean, maybe behind Pike defends, but there's probably not aboard. Finding play in the history of the program. So you know it was a zero to hero call, and obviously to him not being a zero and then that's what people are gonna remember. So but but I think it's bigger than just that 13 to call. It was really just kind of the way that whole driveway. You're right about that. Here's here's what kind of sticks in my craw. It's It's not the mechanics of what they could have couldn't have done. Second guessing is easy. Second guessing is a part of the gig. It's what makes sports fund Luke Fickell. I think behind closed doors would be willing to admit that certainly not right after the game, but fine. The thing for me, though, is and I wrote about this for the athlete for the athletic that the publication that you work for it, and I think there's some people who took this as me being cynical or negative, and it's not that It's an appreciation. For what that moment Woz you are. You are two yards away. You're a minute and a half away from achieving the greatest victory in your program's history and to do that. You've got to finish your season undefeated. You've gotta win your league. You've got to be the highest rank of all the group of five schools and you've got to go toe to toe with a powerhouse for 58 minutes. All of those things are hard to do it the same time. That's not to say that you see football is gonna be bad or not being a big bowl game or not being the top. Those things very well could happen. They're gonna have a good team coming back next year. But it felt to me like the planets were lining and the planets don't align all that often. You only get some of the opportunities like that. You're right, especially with the situation there. And I mean, look, you see, a football has been really good for the past two years, but What it's been at least three years now, since I've been to a New York six bowl and they've been good. They've had good recruitment had successful seasons. You know, Memphis wins the Commerce title s last year and then, obviously like this year, they're not even playing for a championship. So as much as I think the bear cats, they're set up for success moving forward, and I really do you know, I think there's a good chance that the last thing Kind of memory of this game is just the fact that Cincinnati belonged on that stage. They didn't go into that game and get blown out. They went into that game, and they should have won. But you were right that if we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that just getting to that point, you know. Yeah. Everything's set up really Well, you have Luke Fickell. All that stuff is great. But even with all those things getting there is hard and they were there and they had a chance to win. And they didn't so e think you're totally right that even if they do get back there next year more the back there in a couple of years. Let's not lose sight of the fact that how difficult that was and how great it would have been for the program to get that win. We have spent the aftermath of that watching players decide whether or not they're going to jump to the NFL or State University of Cincinnati. And I think the big one that that everybody is paying attention to his Desmond Ritter. I would expect an announcement here within the next day or two is does your gut tell you either way, whether or not does is going to stay or go Yeah, I've always been lean, and then he comes back, and I'm stunned. Still definitely leaning that way. Um, you know, he's gotten some attention. Certainly, you know, kind of an NFL draft circles, and I think it became definitely from the start of the season. But even just over the course of the season, you know became something he really had to think about. I mean, you wrote about this think back like If you'd have told people in the second week of the season third week of the season, the decision he's gonna have to make everyone had been like, please, you know, go into the draft, and so you know his credit. He's made that a viable option on he's done that by playing really well, so I think he realizes that there's still some things he work on them to be an NFL quarterback, and so because I think he comes back, But you know, all christened him. The fact that he made this I think probably a tougher decision than even he expected entering the season. If you would have said to me that in September we're gonna be talking about Desmond Ritter being the offensive player of the year in the league, and we're you know, he's gonna maybe leave early to go get it. Go, You know, end of the draft and maybe get drafted. I would have laughed at you. I mean, I would have taken that bet right now. I guess the way I look at it is a It's a great success story because he advanced so much you wrote about this during the season, not just as a thrower, but the mental aspect of pre snap aspect of it. The timing the runs better all that stuff. He really evolved into a complete, well rounded college quarterback, But he's not a finished product. He still has a ways to go. He should be the quarterback of a really good team next year. It's also a loaded draft class. So I mean to me, there's I certainly would never begrudge anybody a chance. Toe go and lead to an opportunity that awaits And who knows what's gonna happen. You could get hurt all that stuff at the same time. I think there's more upside T staying in school than there is to testing the waters in the NFL draft. Where, as as great as it is that people are writing about him is as an NFL draft choice. It doesn't strike me as somebody who is going to be taken on Thursday or Friday, so why not come back to school? Yeah, And, you know, let's not discount the fact that like he can, you know if he comes back and have a good season next year, he's up there with, you know the Dooley. He's an all time great. You know that quarterback and football player and he's from right down the road in Louisville, his family could come up and see him play. Obviously, this was not kind of the normal college experience this year that The starting quarterback player of the year would would want to have, so, you know? Yeah, get the NFL stuff. But I.

"Ended up going in favor of Alabama all these shots that like Notre Dame in the A C C title game this year. If you miss early, you're settling for field goals. You're not going to be able to last against team with that much talent. I think it's going to be an entertaining game. That book is a tough, tough kid. He is incredible playmaker for them. He's played his best football. The relationship between him and offensive coordinator Tommy Reese Susan's first full season with the team, I think is allowed in to play a lot calmer this year, and it makes some of the big players. We saw that first Clemson game that big time prime time game against North Carolina, hopefully for them. Today in the Rose bed, and he could get very creative as well as we saw that North Carolina game him him and Desmond Ritter apparently working out of the same playbook so far from what we've seen from Ritter, really this season and today and I'll tell you what, that's an exciting playbook. That's entertaining football. We've seen Ritter do it things that a couple of guys would even think about doing where the lesser talent you know, reservoir than he has. He's made some great plays today. Georgia takes over the football here. They do so at their own 29 yard line, moving right to left, and the black uniforms with the red helmets and a handoff goes to Sameer White. At a short game is he go back into the center of the line, but 90 seconds to go here in the third quarter, it's Cincinnati, leading in 21 to 10 and a game that has seen some really interesting offensive plays plenty of penalties. Had a couple of incredibly long reviews. And yet it's been a pretty entertaining game to this point second down and nine for Georgia. 80 Daniels from the gun. Here's the snap. He looks straight on. He's gonna fire it out of bounds off to his right as the play failed to develop. Tell you what Cincinnati came out here, Marcus Freeman, their defensive coordinator, said earlier this week. We're not going to change a lot of the things that we do. We've seen what Cincinnati's don't all year man coverage, giving them extra bodies around the line of scrimmage. They've been stuffing this Georgia rushing attack. Getting up the back field, creating problems. Expect more of that on this third down as we get jolted Blanco, the linebacker, mugged up in the age gap, trying to.

"Well, I mean, that's all we do in this city chick we hope, but I'm just telling you the bear cats to me. They deserve to be And if our five conference and when some of the power five conference television contracts are up in a few years I think they ought to take that They ought to take a good long look at Cincinnati and what they have done under Luke Sickle because he's not going anywhere. I was nervous last year when he Michigan State was rumored to maybe Be the ones so Lord Hamilton, Cincinnati, and I didn't even sweat that much. Then I'm sure a second not sweaty now, because I think he's staying in Cincinnati. He's built something special here, and he's not the kind of guy that jumps at something. Quote on quote bigger and brighter and something that may be more money. He's not that kind of guy. He doesn't have that kind of ego. Brian Kelly. How don't mean a passion because he was a tremendous coach here as well. But I'm telling you Cincinnati can benefit themselves so much tomorrow with the win over Georgia. Is it going to be easy melt the key to meet ship? They have to run the football running running the football. Look, It's the safest way to get yours because, as Woody Hayes coach in Ohio State, had said, When you throw the football, too, of the three outcomes or negative, it's incomplete, intercepting on the football, Okay, what that does what that's gonna do. It's gonna force Georgia to load the box 8 to 10 guys, then you can take shots down the field. Running the football for its heart. It is, yes. What if you're able to establish it with your jokes with Desmond Ritter? If you're able to spread the field with regards to a credibility, guess what? That's gonna open up the past game And in that past game, it's John Wiley. It's Michael Young Junior. It's change. Sean Jackson. There were so many weapons. It's even Jared doped out of the backfield. Renner Taylor Local brought up from Springfield came on late in the season. It's Alex Pearson a great game in the 80 chimp like Pierce. Awesome. Yes, yes, yeah, yeah, he wasn't ducking smoke in the championship. Contrary to who was that salsa corner back Alley Green the fourth yet. Excuse me, but Alex here's smoking mirrors. He smoked him on several rounds. So take that alley green the fourth and oh, by the way, it's also lost. They're just going to stick that to them well, and I'm hoping that Jae Hee Janu ALS, the quarterback of the Georgia Bulldogs gets to meet Ahmed Gardner and James Wiggins. Sauce sauce. Gardner, a couple of second team all Americans, Yes, and not only that shit, but think about the defense of one you think about the death was on the defensive line. Curtis Books Elijah Ponder Hometown Kid from Atlanta, Georgia. You think about your bars? Taylor, My Jay Sanders. Look, pickles and my standards. Complaint 15 years in the National Football League 15 years in the National Football League. That's how good he is. Maybe he'll even do a thriller dance tomorrow. If the sex JT Daniel's even Tuckey, MMA League van, and then you go to the linebackers for well White South high school product. And look at the season. He's had 74 tackles on the season gold. The Blanco contribute Darien Beavers, and that's secondary pool. That's secondary. James Wiggins, We forget about James Whitney. Because of what I am not a gardener and Kobe Bryant have done James Wiggins to the first team all American chicks vernal last year. Yeah, I didn't realize you were this prepared. This is un believe you got me ready to jump on the sideline and dunk the basketball. How cool is that on the sidelines? Man? I think it's fantastic this team and that's nothing to chick. This team has fun. It's been that way. The last Two years, 2017 You saw Luke Fickell planted seeds of what? This program one of the prosper to beat And not only did they quickly do that in 2018, but they're having fun. Slam dunking basketballs on the sidelines are jumping up and down the sidelines during kickoff in third down, You're seen Marcus Freeman. Heck, in normal, you're always had squat best in the off season. My man. Justin Williams had a great article about that in the athletic last year. SWAT vest who that sounded fun I wanted to have been There could be a part of that. This you see football team, they have fun. With winning and you know what shit. They have a chip on their shoulder. This is the point. I made this even I don't think we realized how much Losing back to back games in the second, the same team at the same venue. Motivated that team last year, the lost in Memphis twice at the end of the regular season, the conference championship game. I don't think we realized how much that body that did that and if you didn't see it in the ball game You show us that you've seen in this regular season the way they playing assess them. You Memphis to Rome, Fourth shot out of a cannon on that late touchdown run. There was 42 10. They used to do that. But guess what ship with you See football team, They play 16 minutes whether they're up 39, or whether they're down whatever which by the way, when the last time they trailed in game this season can't remember. Can't remember. Alex. Frank, You got me ready to run through a wall with snot bubbles, brother. This is great stuff. Wow. We've got a UC pep rally till nine o'clock. We're taking your calls.
