"Now thirty six heading up to fifty four Scott FitzGerald with you. Joe Jackson, no in the control room. It is Kentucky on Saturday. Morning news. A lot going on traffic seems to be back to normal after a busy traffic day. Another store recalling police say three people were killed and four injured in a shooting overnight. A bowling alley in the city of torrents. Witnesses say what started to be what would started as a late night fight turned deadly ABC's. Marcy Gonzalez has the latest from Los Angeles. Police responded to calls of shots fired at the Gable? House bowl just before midnight in Torrance that's about twenty miles south of Los Angeles. Witnesses say a verbal fight broke out among some women. It turned physical with others joining in and then shots rang out three people killed four injured. Police are not saying whether the suspect is among them, or whether that person is in custody, that's ABC's Marci Gonzales. Thank you. Marcy. Stay with NewsRadio eight forty W H s and of course, Jerry bloom working hard in the. Newsroom to bring you the latest on that coming up for us here in just a bit did your child get that. Well that screen, I guess tablet, maybe a tablet, maybe a new phone. Do they spend too much time on it? I know with my own son. We we really fought him tooth and nail my daughter not so much, but my son. Spending too much time on a screen. It was really hard to do that as apparent when? Just the other night, Allah, govern all four of us are sitting in the living room staring at our phone sex thing. Did you what are you texting each other? No oil. Okay. My daughter will call my wife if she's upstairs. So we get up off the couch. What happened to yelling down the stairs? Right. And so, you know, so I'm looking and I'm. I'm getting ready to yell at my son from being on his phone too much as I'm holding my phone in my hand like I tried to say. You're spending too much time on your phone when I go. No, that's kind of what we're all doing. There is a way that they're finding ways now in innovative ways to help children curb the screen time. And and I think a lot of it could work for adults as well. I think we all have that problem in these you look around you. I was ridiculous with it. I was watching the world junior championships d'aquin yesterday. And I was just sitting there just redoing my Twitter feed part of the reason I do that though is because especially during games I like to see what people are saying. I like to see what people are talking about, you know, kind of the feedback they have. But the question is is it, okay? For our kids. In fact, one of the battles fought with my son was early on when he was trying to figure out math problems. He would simply ask Siri. What is the this X Y Z over four or five? I'm like, dude. Well, so easy to do that. Well. Well, and I'm yelling at him four. And I'm thinking, well, why would I do that? I mean, look at what I do not want to fix something around the house. It used to be have to consult somebody who was an expert. Are you kidding me? I can jump on YouTube. Give me five minutes, I can fix the replace the engine bar. That's what I'm saying. I've learned so much of YouTube by watching somebody else do it. In fact, I went to I went to my mechanic. Oh god. This must have been a year ago super super guy. We've used them for twenty years, I'll keep using them. And I said, no, I think this is the problem. He goes, do you think that or is it something you watched on YouTube? Damn as you know what you're right Boston. So then so then I'm getting on my son. Because I'm like, dude, you you gotta figure out how to do this problem. You can't just ask Siri and yet Yesica he's right there. He can tell me, you know, you're right dad, and then I can leave the room, and he Toronto theory. Yes. Oh, but it begs the question do we have to change our mentality? Sort of our way of thinking is it really out of place for my daughter to call my wife when she's upstairs instead of getting up now. No, fairness she bought it. She's got a new puppy and the puppy was sitting on her lap and she didn't want. Oh, yeah. That's like when your cats on your lap to go to the bathroom. You just sit there. Right. Right. And so she didn't she didn't want to get up. So I'm looking at that. And that beg the conversation. We had this week with Tony in will Clark. And that is more and more schools are just getting rid of teaching cursive altogether. And I honestly I can't tell you the last time. It was I use cursive other than signed something. I don't write letters even my cursive is illegible. So I don't I don't know that it did me any good. So I don't understand the fuss about it know, exactly I one I name me one person. And this isn't this isn't a bash on age everything name me one person under the age of forty who has written something in cursive anytime within the last few. We. I can't think of anyone I know who use even people over forty right? They just don't use cursive anymore because I remember just being so frustrated when I had to write that little when you had right? The capital Q. No, this is a two it's not backwards to not right. You've never gonna use this. Oh my God. This is a compliment to teachers because I will never ever forget. My first grade teacher, MRs SuAn who taught me how that was the first time we were in Dr undocumented indicators of writing and we would spend day after day, and she would have the little letters posted above the chalkboard. And you would have to sit there and religiously ride it over the with the hatched lines. And it was just like I got it eventually did. But then my handwriting just got worse. In fact, if I if I handwrite stuff now, it's all capitals, I don't write in lower case letters anymore. It's more legible for me to write an all capitals. And everybody said cursive will make your regular handwriting. More legible. No it didn't. That's exactly right. It did not know it didn't. In fact, you know, sometimes for the holidays, I'll try to like I'll sit down and try to write things on cards, and I'll try to write out notes and personalized a little bit more. And this is sad. I'm not this is a knock on me. I I miss my attention span too. I cannot right like a standard paragraph in cursive, if I wanna rights because I'm too forward thinking because I'm used to typing all the time. Yeah. When I type I can go back and just delete delete delete. And then retype what I wanna tight and your fingers keep up with your head your brain as you're typing. That's my writing does not keep up with my brain. That is exactly right. So it's frustrating because if you've received a holiday card for me, and I tried to write you a nice note at the bottom. It's very simple. It has a lot of blocked out. Right. Strike factory. Right. And I think people just forget they just give up on reading. Oh, that's nice Scott. Send us a card. I'm not going to try to decide there's a signature this is at the bottom. So I think I right. So the question is, and we'll get to this here in just a few minutes. The question is are kids spending too much is how much of an impact is it is screen time having on kids. Now, we do have the standard of the house once it's bedtime. It's bedtime. No phones in the room. You you don't even put it charge. You can charge it downstairs you have to you have to turn that off at night. That's that's just without exception. But if your child's entertain themselves, and that was the other thing we talked about road trips we used to go on road trips. Nice thing was that was kind of time for the family to talk, etc. But after traveling with one of my kids were toddlers screen dot kept him, quiet. Yes. It hasn't. It does within reason. All right. We'll really down here in about five minutes time is it too much screen time ABC's Becky wolf will take a look for us. But right now, let's talk about that w ELL y forecast, which always has our full attention here at News Radio. Eight forty W H S for today. "Marci gonzales good morning marcy hi marty in april good morning glad that you with us so when they talk about preparing for this other than just leaving the area what else can you do for these preparations for these lava flows that's basically it they've evacuated eighteen hundred people from these two communities where these lava vents are just opening in the ground and so these people are just forced to kind of sit back and wait they are letting some of the residents about half of them go back in to grab some belonging to grab their pets because they did have to evacuate so quickly so they're back grabbing what they can some of them were bringing truckloads of things because they're preparing for the possibility that their homes could very well be destroyed that's gotta be terrifying the only good piece lava flow is relatively slow so you know when it's coming you know the opposite of wildfires that we have here in colorado that are so fast people don't always have time to get out but when we do have wildfires marcy there are always people who won't evacuate they refuse are you saying there too yeah i was just talking to some of the county officials yesterday it's hard for them to get a real estimate of how many people stayed behind because they're not doing door check because the concern isn't just with the lavas with the air quality the full for dioxide that's coming out of the lava and so it's not really that safe to go into some of these areas so they're not doing a door to door check like they might do with other natural disasters but they are estimating that there are maybe a dozen people who stayed behind and a lot of these people are are one they're shooting video and you know trying to make some money off of this we've seen quite a few people who are taking some very big risks to capture some some of this video risking the likes of those who are trying to help people get out of the way to and putting a strain on those services marcy i hobby see these things are unpredictable but the experts desai's malla just geologists do they have any idea how long this is going to be until killer whales and the island settled back down they really don't have any idea this is what's making it especially challenging they're.
