"Year deal for Tom Brady in the Fox booth as their lead analyst. So Andrew marchand from the New York Post who broke the financials on that joins us marchand was booked before Tuesday when the deal came about. So great timing that we get Andrew's perspective on all this. And we also, it's not just a conversation about Brady. We get into a lot of layers of the Brady story, but then also some other sports media topics, what Amazon's doing with their NFL coverage, what's going on with good morning football, looking for a replacement for K Adams, Kentucky Derby ratings, F one, becoming a big deal here in the United States. So a lot of topics with Andrew, but obviously heavy on Brady and then following that conversation, train of thoughts with our weekly segment there with Sal. So that's what's coming up before we get to it. Great reminder last week, Katie, no one was on the podcast. Two weeks ago, Ryan Rosso three weeks ago, Kenny Smith. If you missed any of those interviews, going to the archives and check them out. If you can subscribe to the SI media podcast, that would be wonderful and even better would be reviewing it and then I'll read some of those reviews on the pod on one of these episodes. All right, let's get to it, Andrew marchand, followed by trying to thoughts with right here. On the SI media podcast. All right, joining me now, SI media podcast regular and not to pat myself on the back, but how smart was I to text you on Monday to see if you can come on this week when we got the bombshell on Tuesday that Tom Brady is joining Fox. He is Andrew marchand from the New York Post and the Martian and oran podcast, Andrew, how are you? I'm well, Jimmy. Thanks for having me on. My pleasure. I was going through the archives, and I saw that you hadn't been on since February, and we had a good run here on the pod with guests. We had Katie Nolan last week, Ryan Roscoe, Kenny Smith, I and eagle, I said they think it's time for like a little state of the sports media world..

"All right, let's change topics to something way more interesting than the Super Bowl. Stone cold, Steve Austin. Vince wants him to wrestle a match at WrestleMania. Now, normally, I say like, I don't love watching the Hogan and flair like it's kind of sad when they try to wrestle when they're old, but stone cold has been the one guy who's nobody at wrestling ever walks away. Stone cold has done it. He hasn't been in a ring in like 15 years, probably. You want to see it or you don't care. I don't really care. I'm not, remember, we always talk about this. I'm from like 86, 85, 86 to 92. Now I'm familiar with The Rock and Austin and the attitude era and all that, but not I wasn't like a 100% into it. I think if I knew that he was going to be there, I'd probably be more inclined to watch it than I would normally, so I'd be intrigued. I don't know how like is he physically able to he always said he wasn't able to because of his neck, but I guess, you know, and warned people just ripping now I didn't watch it, but I heard people ripping Shane McMahon for being there at the Royal Rumble. So it's like we don't want these old people. I know that Austin is a different level, but aren't they going back to the same old bag what is it gonna be Hogan versus Austin? I mean, what are they doing here going into the old guys? Well, the undertaker continuing to bring him out where he looks shot. Since you brought up Shane, I'm gonna ignore what you just said and just switch gears because that's actually a great story. How about this? So Shane, did you follow this? So apparently Shane McMahon was one of the producers of the Royal Rumble Match. And one of the backstage people who worked on putting together the Royal Rumble Match. And then the Royal Rumble Match was awful, got vicious backlash and then Vince the next day fires his son and chains out of the W is there anyone else who would fire their son besides Vince McMahon? That is tremendous. I did not know all that. I just read some of the stuff there, but then bizarre relationship. Yeah. And then last week, AEW was kept promoting the big surprise of people thought it would be Shane McMahon can you imagine shaving man turns up on AEW wrestling? That would make me watch. You talked about that so real quick. Let me just follow up with you. What is up with the Cody Rhodes thing? He left AEW and he's going to go to WWE apparently. I don't understand that. Wasn't he wasn't he AEW period? That's what I thought. But Tony Kahn owns the company. So why is he when everybody else seems to be leaving WWE to go to AEW? Why is he doing the opposite? Have you ever heard of a thing called money? So that's what it is. I mean, good for everything. Everything is money. Money. Money money money money. There was such a big part. Look, again, I don't know the word out of watch AEW, but just from knowing a little bit about it. But it's a startup company. I'm sure you got shit money for many of those years, and now he wants to cash it out. Oh, good for him. I'll be curious to see his return to the WWE if that happens. Last thing, do you watch euphoria on HBO? No, should I? I was going to ask you that question. I do not like it. I thought you did, and I was going to ask you if I should, but I feel like given the buzz I constantly see, I need to be watching it. What is it about? I never even heard of it. On a high school kids doing drugs is what I think. No, thank you. I think I'll pass on that. All right. I think I gotta, I gotta get, I think I gotta check it out. Yeah. All right, well, you let me know and then I'll see you. Let me my producer, do you watch it? Either say yes or give me a message me on like slack or zoom if you're listening. Shelby does not watch it. All right. I need to get some info on euphoria. All right. So appreciate it. And we'll talk to you next week about God knows what. Nothing going on. I'm trying to figure something out. All right, I'll talk to you later. Take it easy. Thanks. "Jimmy trying to thanks for listening, post Super Bowl fallout week. We've got Andrew marchand. We get into way, way more than the Super Bowl with Andrew for the New York Post. And obviously he got his own sports media podcast. Get into the Al Michael situation as Troy Aikman leaving Fox, Sean mcvay, is he going to go into broadcasting. Manning cast copycats, Chris Russo and Stephen a Smith on first take and obviously it thoughts on the Super Bowl telecast, all that with marchand followed by the train of thought segment with sala cata, where we get into some of the stuff about the Super Bowl halftime show. And we had a big discussion about Stone Cold Steve Austin, possibly coming back to the WWE. So check that out before we get to marjan and train of thoughts or reminder last week boomer syson was on the pod two weeks ago, Brian Curtis, three weeks ago, Roman Reigns Joe buck Jim nantz. Those pods, all the archives, if you haven't listened to any of those, check them out, subscribe, rate, and review, try to review really helps a lot. I appreciate that. And that's it for the plugs. Let's get to the pod. Andrew marchand from the New York Post followed by train of thoughts at solicitor right here on this week's aside media podcast. All right, joining me now, SI media podcast regular, write it for the New York Post host of the Martian and overran podcast. He is Andrew marchand, Andrew, how are you? Good, how you doing? I'm good. Did you enjoy the Super Bowl? I did. I did. I was out in LA for a week before. So that was good. And then the game, you know, not a great game, but I think you give out of a ten, you probably give it a good 7 or 8. Maybe a 7. Why were you in LA for a week, just a hobnob and find out where all Michaels is going to go? Yeah, basically. Yeah, it's a good for me, covering baseball like a country like it's the winner meetings. So it's actually more fruitful than the winter meetings. My baseball writer friends listening to sit around and wait for Joel Sherman, Rosenthal, name in a tweet, everything out, and now you get some stuff when you're out the winter meetings, but it's a trillion baseball writers waiting for Scott bors to talk. Yeah, it's fruitful for me. It lays the groundwork for the year. A lot of ways. Where you at radio row? I did go there. I went by their briefly a couple of days. I talked to some people. How was it? How horrible was it? Oh, how horrible. I think it was that horrible. I mean, I talked to McAfee, I talked to Russo, so it was good for me. You go right to the big guys. You're not fooling around with Joe theisman and Eric Dickerson like every sports talk radio show in the country. Yeah. I just kind of checked it out. But it wasn't kind of like the main reason to be out there. So, but yeah, it seemed all right. I think next year there's a chance we get back to more normalcy. It ticked up again. I forgot the exact numbers in terms of how many people were there, but it wasn't a zoo. I quite honestly, you don't want to pandemic. Bruce there. But. It was a little bit, you know, those things are a little crowded, it's kind of gross, you know, beforehand. So a little less people is not the worst thing. You said you talked to McAfee, do you have a McAfee feature coming? No, I just introduced myself to him. I've been pretty kind to him, but on the air once it aired injuries on, and she said, I don't like her and then he said, I didn't like him, so I just wanted to introduce myself because I've been pretty positive. I blew him up once about he was kind of campaigning for Monday night a few years ago on Twitter, and then we DMed and it was all cool. And it might be cool. That might not be anything. No big deal there. But I just like to introduce myself to people like covers, I try to, you know, so I can know them from covering them. It's important to me. If I can, I think it's better. So that's what I did. I've grown to like his show. I mean, I don't think anyone can have anything, but massive respect for how he's built his media. Career empire. Even before the 40 million from FanDuel or whatever it was, 400 million. But. People focus on the roger stuff, but he does good interviews. His interview style I like it. And I like his takes. I like the way he does the way he runs his show. I had wrote, I wrote one negative. I don't even think it was negative. I mean, I guess if you're him, you could see it as negative. But he had gone on the air one Monday and said, like, every NFL analyst no, no. He went on the air and said, like, he can't believe how bad some NFL analysts are. And I'm like, if you're going to do that, you got to name some names because he did it in a pretty broad way. I think it's the energy. I think the energy brings. I think we talk about Russo all the time. And I think radio a lot of time has a lot to do with energy. It has to be sincere energy, right? Like Chris Russo is missing a screw, but it's a good screw to be missing for radio. McAfee. There's just an energy. It's his friends, which I always say when people make pairings. You can't just put somebody with their friends always. But you're just gonna have a better conversation. We're gonna have a better we know each other, you know, we've never worked together, but now we've talked enough on off the air. We have a rapport. It's gonna be a better podcast because we kind of know I know where you're gonna go kind of know where I can teach you, you can tease me, you know, that type of stuff. And so I think the main reason his stuff works real well is that energy that that show has. Yeah, for sure. You mentioned Russo, we're taping this a little bit after his first official episode of first take with Stephen a every Wednesday aired. I'm still coming off the high. I couldn't even believe how good it was. I seem like an obvious win. When they did it the first time, when you go way back when I guess skip left, Stephen a wanted Russo to be the full-time co host. That was one of the people. At least on his list, I'm not saying that was the number one on his list. Adam Sean, I think it was another guy he had interest in. And it didn't happen, of course. But this seems like, and I don't know 5 days a week, maybe it'd be great. There's two lunatics that's going at it. It's an art form. It's not, who cares what they say. You are tweeting all the social. It's not what they say. It's just right. You know, I mean, doggie, again, we grew up on like literally we grew up 89. I don't know how old you are exactly. Jimmy, but 89, I mean, I'm 15 years old, or 87, I get to start. So I'm 13 years old when fans start and Kirsten Mike kind of came in real quick. So you kind of grow up on them. So to hear the doggy isms, you know, he even, what do you say, life on the line? Flat as a pancake. Maybe even said life on a line of Steven a and like he brought up Kirk Cousins better than dak Prescott it was really fun. Exactly. So it's just he just has a sense. And he also has this thing of doing of like, which is so enjoyable. He doesn't like in an argument, he'll just say names like he's doing like they were doing the Dodgers and the Lakers comparing who's more popular in LA and he just said Vince Molly Sandy Koufax. Has nothing to do with the argument. Oh my God. That was one of the clips I tweeted. He said scenario 50. I said on Twitter recently that I'm going to start a Twitter account just dedicated to all the times he uses the word scenario, which never make any sense. He got to do a thing to the tribe called quest song..

"They're not watching your late night. Now obviously you watch anything whenever you told him. The johnny stuff now is clearly. Johnny seem to be one person. Tv in one person. Not on tv and well. Yeah for sure. There are a couple of things i mean. We all know that joan rivers story And you know it's one of those things that like. I don't blame johnny. Maybe for being pissed that he never got a phone call. But how do you hold that grudge for your whole life at some point. You got to move on johnny carson. Look she handled that really poorly. Johnny had made her career really at made her career. But i don't want interrupt. I don't but one of the fascinating parts of the series which i want listeners. To know is. There's a clip of john river saying that an nbc executive had told her she'll never ever be the hotel owned by a guest host. So you get it from her standpoint and why she wants to jump ship you gotta let johnny. No you're jumping ship. Frankly i knowing the situation knowing the people involved if jones sent him johnny. I'm not going to get this. But i have this offer from fox. That's a lot of money. Johnny would say you gotta go with that. That's for your career. You gotta go with but to do it without telling john he just was personally offended. Get a personal relationship with her and personally offended did he. Overtly town guests. Don't go on the show i. I've never heard that it was former like that. But everyone knew he was completely pissed her cut off and then they said. Well i'm not gonna josiah arabi day johnny that so it really hunts once. She loses her fox show and then her husband commits suicide. Like the can johnny make a phone call and patch it up just from a standpoint. Forget late night. Tv you know yeah. I agree that it makes it. I have to tell you my fellow sector very emotional. That just does not just with. Melissa rivers the daughter but the scene would joan comes on jimmy fallon Yeah yeah yeah just get on the carson. Show get on. nope show. Didn't get leno ever during his entire run. And she didn't get on with conan ever she was banned from nbc. Nevermind garcia was really emotional and only be heading on the. Cbs show for a long time. He he ended up having her on a lot in the later years. But i think when i got there it in have iran really well it was a it was a big black more for people in the business that she had pulled a move that they just didn't think was right. But you know. I have a feeling and i'm not a guy says misogyny determines everything but i have a feeling guide. Pull this move. let's face it. Jay was accused of all kinds of various stuff right going around days but he didn't. He wasn't banned from things like that. It really was pretty extreme for revenue. Oh god i just had a thought about the joan and it went right outta my head. Oh with letterman is a great if anyone hasn't seen it. There's a great clip of joan rivers on letterman from one of his last couple of years on. Cbs where she says some joke and he just walks off in a joking way and then she does like an interview with herself and the woman. That point is probably like seventy. I mean it was amazing to see. Yeah on on tv. The johnny. I found interesting. Maybe shed some light on this. He wanted dave to take the twelve thirty show. And johnny created the twelve thirty show and it was all in his contract. He gets to create it so he got a theme..

"But to other people and nbc and are are you asking me the with the data factor in my decision. Yes it did. Well the incident that he's referring to it's a specific incident because after everyone dave's anniversary shows they did a big party in new york right and la mama go to that party all the time and there was an nbc. Executive was the executive in charge of the literature. She just would be there each night and she would love the show and she loved dave. She's and he was always invited. But this year dame was really pissed at nbc. So he disinvited rick laghman and he disinvited says he space sissy biggers. Who was the executive in charge and rick. Klugman was so pissed off at him for doing that to syfy he was so pissed off. He said this guy is so rude that in the last minute he kicks her out of a party and incredibly that came up even at the very end with nbc's reconsidering maybe taking dave tonight show. It comes up. Will you know we wanna make sure you will be having parties and kicking. And they can't believe this millions of dollars on the table in the future of the show but it comes down to a party invitation important and i. I'm sure you'll cover this. I would assume you'll cover this but you know obviously then dave beat j. Allot until the hugh grant thing on the tonight show did at any point before the hugh grant thing that nbc ever consider getting rid of leno. They didn't consider getting rid of leto leno because there really wasn't an obvious choice of them went big installed conan at twelve thirty show and he was having a very rough time. I so the end. They tried a lot of other people for that job and they all said no. Garry shandling dana carvey. They'd all said no. I'm not doing it so they didn't have an immediate but they did acknowledge to me. When i was riding relationship before the switch with grant is whether the book came out jack welch who is ahead of ge. I t. i interviewed him and he said you know we made a mistake. Okay we made a mistake. The other guys a bigger talent mistake but what people forget is that yes. The u grant thing was huge for j. j. started to get a little better giving full credit for this. He wised up. Little about is performing style but the real thing that happened was cbs had a disastrous. Primetime with its nfl. Coffee wasn't the nfl. And they lost a ton of affiliates ton of strong stations going from big station and tried to some little. Uhf station that really hurt letterman. Big big big time. So ninety four when fox came in and took the nfl from seasons very big crucial is amazing. I mean obviously now that stuff's pretty relevant but back then how it all tied together. You know you have sunday football. You people watching you late night if you prime is no good..

"The j. dave thing was always like i said love the late shift Yes thank you. So i was always under the assumption that nbc chose jay leno place. Johnny instead of david letterman. Just because of dave sense of humor. Acerbic personality obviously wasn't in love with Network executives what we learned in the in the documentary. It might have been in the late shift. And i may. I may have just gotten it whenever. Nbc had negotiated contract with leno. while carson was still hosts. There was a clause in there that leno gets the tonight show only the last on the the the they put the last not not up to and what was amazing about it was it was only. I think nine days before. Johnny announced that he was stepping down that they renewed j. as the guest os and put the clause in there not knowing it was going to come into effect so gave them no chance to go to letterman and set this in motion in any way so my question is did nobody know that. That clause was in jay leno's contract in terms of media in terms of dave johnny. Did nobody know that. Until i wrote my book. Nobody knew nobody knew it was. It was completely done in secret. Because letterman thought. He still had a chance he could fight for by for the show. He had no idea no chance whatsoever. And what what. The documentary didn't fully capture when his producer. Robert morton tells the story of nbc's people coming to dave to explain today. They want wanted to stay. The woman's day. Dave gets up and walks talked about walking out meeting but he stood up and he said gentlemen. This is completely unacceptable to me and walked out but he he was for nothing. He couldn't do a thing he boxed in however and you'll remember this in the next episode. There was a last minute potential rearrangement because nbc was not totally sold on jay and they were really afraid. Dave leaving and going to cbs. Because no competitor had ever taken a franchise to a challenging position tonight show and he was the guy capable of doing it then. Obviously it's famously known. The dave wanted the tonight show. Do you think. Dave did. They want the tonight show. Did he want to be on eleven thirty or did he wanted to be the interplay. Johnny because johnny was what was the attract the most attractive for days. It was clearly that he had grown up as the tonight. Show being the franchise. That's the late night franchise. And when he started he developed a relationship with carson carson obviously liked dave he he was not a fan of j..

"I guess but i thought it was interesting that it was old news but it became official this week where. Espn from now on well. After this year i guess they're just gonna do sunday night baseball and that's it no more games during the week. I guess they do opening day. And i think that stupid the dopey the home run contest and then just sunday night baseball from now on which i you know. I know we're going to the streaming world and people probably know wednesday night. Aren't watching the braves and cardinals on. Espn but you know. I think baseball could use any exposure can get. I think that that sort of not a great deal there for mlb wanted to be on espn during the worst. You're saying but let me ask you a question jimmy you doing it. I don't go. when's the last time you watched A game on. Espn during the week. You're always watching the yankees. Well right and he was the yankees are on. Espn watch espn broadcast. Not sunday night. when an exclusive. When there's a simulcast you can yes or espn which broadcast you watch. Listen or listen more. Yeah yeah yeah. That's not even an issue. Yeah yeah so. I guess the question is why. Would you have these mid week games that they don't mean anything for you right. Oh no no no. I will because the beautiful thing i got into this with a rich eisen last week about streaming and all this. That's the beautiful thing is you can flip around. I mean yeah. I'll watch the yankees. But in between innings or when a pitcher taking five hours in between pitches i can flip over to his pin. And if you know mike trout. Is that bad or if you know some guys throwing a shutout maybe tune in but yet is it appointment. Viewing no my sitting there at seven o'clock first pitch on espn wednesday night. Now i get why. Espn did it from the standpoint of you know who's watching these games but also the flip side of that though is you know. Espn is in the content business. And there's still nothing better than sort of live sports to fill some content. So i don't know maybe they couldn't work out a price. Mlb or something. but again. When i saw the news. I didn't think of it from the espn's then point might thing is for major league baseball. Not great that you know. I could and the other point i would make though and there's a larger point jimmy and you've said on twitter i don't wanna say you're not that old that you've said all you look where the where the habit of younger people are going. "I mean how do you do ninety nine percent of the season and then bail. That's makes you think there's something nefarious going on. Well i do think they were thrilled about the ncaa tournament. Which i've written you know. He bailed out late. Reggie miller you know. He and his wife had a baby. He was out of the tournament. But then it was the last minute timing. I i've been told that wasn't the tipping point. I don't think that was Great form you're not gonna do it. People can understand it depend on make But the so laid it was noticeable. When cbs and turner announced. They're they're they're their big media. Press call generally speaking. They always have going to be the announcers right because you want to lead in time And they didn't announce it was going to be doing the games and so that was kind of tell joe. I don't think that helped him And so i mean. I think this would have happened regardless if he had done the ncaa tournament or not. I think this is where it was headed. But that didn't help so now. Who do we know who's doing the eastern conference finals with marver on his last days as a nba announcer. You know we don't know yet. I mean you. Obviously reggie miller will be. I would think the top choice there. Could they add someone. They are high on grant hill. I'm not sure he's going to be able to do it you know. Obviously people weren't putting their schedules together to to have this So i think miller will be there. I would think And so but as we speak that's not set in stone grant hill work with more on the plane game The other night and so maybe he'll work with him in the early rounds but but the in eastern conference final. I think Could be millard. Someone else now. You'd i mean you've been on top of the mar retirement for a while and you had written at one point early on. It looked like turner was going to give that job to brian anderson. Then i think that sort of maybe backed off of that a little bit in that and it was up in the air. Where do we stand now with a mar replacement after the eastern conference finals. This year david levy was had a turner that was his plan to have ryan anderson..

About being or I mean like alcohol and drugs were great for forgetting that you're broke. . Forget any pain that you have. . It's all gone. . So and I got into the psychedelics I got an ecstasy I I never gotten to like math or anything but I stare meant that a little bit. . So it's just started to progress from there. . Yeah. . quickly quickly, , really fast because the age of fifteen to twenty two I used every day something then I couldn't twenty two. . So most of my story. . Is really about my using I don't have a thirty five year career using things right? ? Right yeah. . It was short. . It was fast I had a lot of fun. . So what made you? ? What made you decide to say? ? Okay Hey, , this isn't working for me like I gotTa Stop I. . GotTa do something. . Okay. So . where it starts where I wanted to stop it was It was. . Christmas Eve two, , thousand of the year two thousand and I was I was working in restaurants and bars, , and it was a great time Portland living in Portland Migrate Northwest Portland Neighborhood Powell's bookstore and all that way hipster kid and. . I was working at a really cool restaurant and all my friends read a Bar Tiger. . Bar. . And they all call and I had the flu one hundred and three degree temperature. . I. . "I don't know if it was the first, but I think it was the first the first official reporting from a reopened Las Vegas, Arash Markazi, Rush. How are you? I'm good. Jimmy. I have to say you're one of the people I. You know now. I'm thinking about it that the Corentin must not have been fun considering you're in a different state every day it seems like. I mean it was really hard. 'cause we were about to go into this phase of like the playoffs you had like the little the Lakers and the clippers. This was gonna be like a fun season. For them and the dodgers I mean you just had so much happening. During that time, so listen I think it's been hard for a lot of you'll, but in the Los Angeles sports in particular. We were about to go into a really fun time. Yeah, the Lakers especially We're GONNA. I think have a big run there where you know it would. Lebron whether the heat the cavs. The Lakers. There's really nothing like those June Nights Lebron. You know in the playoffs. Sort of everyone watching together. It's always that I miss I must say. And then you know the big thing for us in Los Angeles I mean we have not experienced one of those. June nine in ten years, so there's a feeling that after. A long kind of period of like really bad basketball, and not making the playoffs and having like a top five. Finally, this was like a championship contending team in as soon as like that last week of the season. They beat the bugs. They beat the clippers. Getting Ready for this stretch run going into the playoffs, and then we got the covid nineteen pandemic. We're GonNa Talk About Vegas. That's what Russia's onto do give sort of set. The scene for vase was like, but I'm just thinking. This is your on because you are out there in la I'm here in New York. And you know PAC ten football, PAC twelve whatever it is USC UCLA, just complete non factors here in New York, but I am curious because with cove it. It does seem like college football. All the attention right now is on MLB NFL and cultural at least here. Maybe because it's again I'm in New York so there's this Sir bias here, but cultural sort of flying under the radar in my head I think. The biggest mess with college football's like every state is just completely different when it comes to the COVID. What's The vibe there in California, do you think like PAC twelve starts on time? Do you think fans in the stands? Do you think no season will give me before to Vegas? Give me a little yes and. So the unique thing about that as you touched on, it's like a school by school basis, so USC will be allowing students back on campus in the fall that again. That is the plan you see system which includes. UCLA is saying it'll be like. An online class situation. So what you what you can have in what college football will have to? You know somehow deal with this is. You can't have players returning to a campus if they're saying that it's not safe for the students to return to campus. Don't my my guess is they're going to try to figure out a way to have a college football season, but that's the. That's the struggle there where USC is saying, kids can return to campus, but UCLA is saying that they can't. Yeah. Yeah, that's that is a great word to describe this time period. That were just bizarre. Yeah, everything well speaking a bizarre so. Arash hit sin city when it reopened a couple of weeks ago. and. was really like the reporter of the you know the the number one reporter reporting on the opening of Vegas for basically everyone and. You posted some pictures I put them in train of thought. Now my take away from your pictures of Vegas. Reopening was just. It looks so depressing to me. But when you were there, what's the vibe when you're there? Saying here's the thing depending on what hotel and casino you went to. It could be depressing because the important thing to notice that only half the strip is back up again, so if you go okay, yeah, so you know. I'm trying to think like the wind was open. Caesar's was opened Bellagio caused the other end of the Strip with like MGM and Tropicana New York New York. That's close to know. They're of open song. Trying to think of the closest properties would be Paris heavily. Bay Hori a Dora. Mirage now. Why is that why only half and I think what they want to see? Who's WHO's GONNA come out right like who a guy a guy included me, but I was there for work like who's The guy who stadium say the casino door up? The Thursday ten am awaiting us to like opened the doors for the first time because it was amazing. The response I got and I. Don't know who is fifty fifty but I mean there was like half the people were saying. All that's amazing like I love to go back and then obviously there was half. It's not more to be honest that we're saying Oh. My God like why are they doing that like? We're not passes. We're going to get a wave so. So the most surprising thing to me was this and this really touches on your point of Lake. I was providing a glimpse into Las Vegas. It was very Monday in video in terms of if this was twenty nineteen. No one would've cared about this but I did a two minute video of me walking through the casino floor Friday night at the Cosmo and what made it unique? Or at least unique during this time was that it felt like it was shot last year. No one was wearing a mask. No one was keeping six feet apart It just was like everyone was having? A really good time in so. I think the Cosmo of all of the properties felt the most normal and when I say normal like there's no pandemic in terms of what these people thinking here in the story that that's how road..

"Yeah but I want it back for people to get their jobs back I. mean that's what's important. Factor That's a big factor, yeah! Speaking of baseball, you did not watch long on summer the thirty for thirty on ESPN. Yet I know all now on, I watch! Paul Jordan Watch. Watch. Briefly and I didn't I didn't watch lance. What did you think of Lance Lamp? Really he was really. Very good It showed. Like the you know when you're writing something or saying something you really. WanNa, show, not tell on, and I thought. He did a great job of that because Lance Armstrong very complicated guy, but you got the sense of what a Turkey is, and was One of compulsory was, and how important wants to the sport, and I thought I'd just give a really good much more. Journalistic view of everything but entertaining in the same way Team and it wasn't really you know. There was a little journalism in it, but it wasn't journalism at all. I mean Jordan was one of the producers, and the as one of the producers I mean. Come on with me a break, so you missing out? Apple. You know they went into thing all dance Robbins personal as like Michael Jordan We didn't know one thing about it again. I'm not saying I wanted that, but I'm just saying if you're doing expose and the idea, though was shooting down like any conspiracies like gambling to sat everything a meeting. Those things are true. Maybe they're not, but like documentary wasn't GonNa find the true so doctors if they're worried if they found out like you know some That the gambling you know secret suspension was true. It's hard to believe and the people that were the commissioner. NBA's lead tr person Jordan's biographer, and maybe Jordan I think we might have been the fourth one, so it's not exactly like they did like. That so So I. I thought it was pretty good I skipped. And Maguire on your tweet. It was really bad. And I've never seen a thirty for thirty. That's was so shocking about it, but this is really really bad. I. Wish you would have watched, so we could discuss it. That was interesting to me about. Like. Top reason about. Well there was an hour and forty five minutes of Homerun highlights, and then the last fifteen minutes or steroids. They I mean the document it opens up with like five minutes on a memorabilia collector. Nobody cares? and. What I the most shocking thing to me was they interviewed Sosa? Ask them about steroids again in the last fifteen minutes after an hour and fifteen minutes of Homerun highlights, and by the way when they started the steroid segment in the last fifteen minutes, they started it with bonds and put it all on bonds, and then we're like. Oh, well, you know. It was. All Bonds Fall Bonds. Did it now. We got to ask these guys about it. They S Osa. About steroids because he's never admitted unlike mcgwire. Sosa got defiant and said I. Don't understand why everyone wants me to admit to steroids when everyone was doing it. And the producer or whoever it was asking, the questions off camera never followed up by saying because you hit six runs one year. They. Just let them go, so it was. A Lot I was tweeting about how bad it was and the responses I kept getting from people on twitter. Who hit the nail on the head? More eloquently than I could kept saying like there's just nothing of depth ear. They didn't go in depth on anything. It was just all the there's. They didn't get into anything it was. An hour and fifteen an hour and forty five minutes of. This is how they went back and forth hitting home runs every day during the ninety eight season in the last fifteen minutes, it was like well bonds, royds, and then it got to mcgwire, and Sosa and the end. I had people like you know I have to say. This is a shocking thing for twitter, but like ninety five percent of the people agreed with me, and then the five percent were like Oh was a fun. Look back at eight. Oh, so fun watching those home runs. Oh, nostalgia, so, but there's nothing there. If you look at, there's not you don't learn one thing now. You want to learn that with all about Lance I didn't like I know about Lance Armstrong and you some things I didn't know necessarily all the nitty gritty, which makes much interesting, so there's always perspective. I think if you're someone who is going to. Maybe would be any the talking heads on the were. Of chip carry a lot of local saint. Louis guys know Joe Buck who basically called record-breaking home runs because I guess either Fox doesn't let him on. Our ESPN doesn't on who knows you know which one of them? Is Pulling. Joel. I. Yeah, so, it was. It. Was Strange. It was really weird What's going on? You've reported a lot lately about ESPN. Radio is. There's two things going on so ESPN. Several people have. I guess laugh, not at contracts renewed during the pandemic, and now there's talk of like an ESPN radio shakeup now I. Don't you know I don't know? WE'RE IN NEW YORK? Nobody in New York listens to what is it Wingo and Golic in the morning nationally I'm not sure what what the status they are, but from what you've reported. It sounds like a shakeup could happen there soon. Yeah I mean keyshawn. Johnson Kitty on that morning. Show for sure. Max Kellerman maybe possibilities not. Much, no hopping. so no change that up. You know Max maybe later in the day 'cause I think. He wants to stay on I. Take which.

I'm doing well I How do you use the rising star? Because I need you. The Rising Star of Twenty Nineteen in sports media in my year end columns on to make sure we plug that live. I appreciate the column. I appreciate introduction. It Very humbling before we. I want to get into you. Know obviously is here and what you do it. Espn and how it all got started in your opinion on some NFL. Things got to start with this because there was a report from your colleague. Adam schefter recently about several front offices or multiple front offices or multiple teams Having interested in you in their front office vacancies Crazy how Adam schefter got that scoop. I don't know how he pulled that off. So what is there anything you could tell us on that front? Are you interviewing? Are you looking to get in front office? Is it something you'd like to do? What's going on there? Yeah I don't I don't think the shefty's reports anything about front office it did. I thought it said stuff about coaching. I have not been contacted by anybody in the NFL. In regards to a front office role I have had conversations and this really goes back giving twenty seventeen when I retired. I had an offer to go join a coaching staff. Right away to write that year pay. It was not the timing goes back to last year when I had two teams reach out One of them being packers come join our coaching staff. And I didn't feel right doing it then. And then this this year I had five teams reach out and I had some conversations with with some some places to potentially join a coaching staff and Multiple roles some offensive coordinator's role some non playcalling coordinator roles I'm not talking to anybody now that that kind of has settled down and that ship has sailed I coaching something. That's been on my mind. I could see me doing it in the future right now with what? I'm doing and kind of what I'm being afforded to do. I absolutely love it and I'm not looking to do anything else right now. Yeah I'LL I'll I I. I messed that up I I. It was front offices have contacted you about leave. Espn for offensive coaching jobs. That's that's what it was very flattering and I you know I look at what I get to do it. Espn is is very much a form of coaching. It's just different. Coaching in Different Your coaching different people more people than the intimate intimacy of a football team Could see myself doing future of course but I'm not looking to to go jump into that right now. Is a hypothetical if you were ever to take one of those jobs do you have a preference on I mean. Do you have to start out as sort of a quarterbacks coach are you a would you go right offensive coordinator? Would there ever be a situation? You envision like that or would you'd have to maybe move up to offensive coordinator by I don't know. Would you be a wide receivers coach or running backs coach? What would be the ultimate? You know role there. Yeah I mean the ultimate role would be a head coach. You know I had opportunities to go and be an offensive coordinator this year now. Two of those opportunities were non. Play calling offense of coordinators. Where like the head? Coach is the play caller. And they want someone who's going be their offense coordinator passing game corner all that stuff. Now I it's all about the right you know. Is it the right organization with the right head coach? And the right quarterback. That's GonNa Afford success because you know if you're going to get into coaching. You're obviously getting in one for the long term and to to try and climb as high as you can and do it in a relatively timely fashion in you know obviously your goal isn't to go cam just going to get into coaching head coach in two years. And then be done but you don't you know I don't he envisioned myself getting into coaching to try to be a an assistant coach for a decade either. And so with the right place right time right at coach and quarterback. I don't think getting into the quarterback coach has any negative aspect to it. Now right it let. Let's say I pathetically you became an offensive coordinator today of an NFL team. Any team doesn't matter. I'm just curious. Is there something you would want to implement? Is there something you'd think you know you would WANNA do? Maybe more. Is there a play a philosophy? Is there something you have that you think? No one's doing right now that you would wanna bring to the table. I don't there's nothing that no one's doing But I think that there's people who do it better for sure and do it more creative like I have said for. Gosh I WANNA say five or six years right now teams. That don't have the the the the Rob Gronkowski tight end of. The world are totally hurting their quarterback. They're just not helping their quarterback play as efficiently as possible because and I'm not talking about the talent of Gronk. Obviously that is rare right. I'm talking about the the ability of Gronk to be both tight end and wide receiver on every single play If you look at the teams that run really good offensive sets consistently. It is the Philadelphia Eagles. It is the Kansas City chiefs. It is the New Orleans saints with the Jimmy Games. Like you have to have that tight end for information and then match up and then I am. You know I. I look at football nowadays so different When it comes to the quarterback in skill people do believe that twenty years ago. Quarterbacks made other players around them better. I truly believe that nowadays the people around the quarterback make him better. And you can't just have one star or two stars. You have to have five or six really good players around him if you look at the past couple of super bowls in the past year. That offensive have been really good. It's the offense. Is that house five. Six seven skilled people deep because the game. Nowadays it's about space and it's about matchups and Those it'd be like the two focal points. The foundational views of my offense obviously dominant offense fine but when it comes to like the the past game in skilled play. It's not really about having one star the wide receiver position about tight end and then a job and a bunch of really really good skilled players. That deepens is just can't match up with. It is interesting because I I always thought the entire season with so many people talking about the quote unquote decline of Tom Brady I. I'd never thought there was enough attention. Paid to the fact that Gronk this year You know just a completely irreplaceable player on every level and yeah not just again not just the physical performance of Gronk but all the things that they did with grunk to figure out what teams were doing before the snap in. Yeah but then I'd anybody I mean. They had the performance of their skill people. I said this I think like we. Four was the number one issue with their offense. I think if you put Tom Brady on an offense that has four five multiple weapons that are good players again. These aren't superstars but they are really good players. Good good players. Tom Brady bill for forty five hundred yards and thirty five to forty touchdowns be interesting to see who he's doing it for next year. That's for sure you had an interesting spin on the Super Bowl where you thought Mike Shanahan Kyle Shanahan. I'm Sorry College Han You didn't think the criticism of him was fair. Is that a correct assessment. Not at all not at all I thought within I think. Kyle caps the chiefs in the football game. I thought there was a mismanagement of the clock at the end of the first half and then last week how came out and said well. This is why we did it. Because we were so conscious of their the explosiveness of the chiefs offense. We didn't want to give them the football back at the end of the first half. I had two gripes with that one. I think in the Super Bowl when you Feared the other team more than you believe in yourself or your team your coaching to lose your coaching not to lose and he said that the fear that he had of Kansas City was greater than the belief he had himself as a play collar or as or and they're player doesn't often the ability to execute an offense to if you're going to say that and that's your game plan all week as a team to handle the end of the first half cocked. That way there's absolutely no way that you kick a field goal in the second quarter on fourth and two under opening drive in the third quarter on your opening. Drive the second half. There's no way can do. You can't sit there day. We don't want to give them the ball back. We understand how explosive there on offense right but then feel good audit fourth in two kicking a thirty yard field goal like it. You're going to say they're so explosive on offense. You don't WanNa give him any time within. Your viewpoint has to be there so explosive on offense. That threes aren't GonNa win you the football game either. Four and five and seven. We could have a different conversation to I think he kept him in the game. The run on second and five near the end of the game with about six minutes to go one hundred percent. The accurate play. Call the right play called. They did the same set. The play of the series before they did a player can pass the kiddle conversion second five is Iran or passed down. You don't you as a defense. You don't know what they're GONNA do. You don't Wanna ask Jimmy G. to play dropback football on third down and yesterday quarterback to throw five yard pass now he had gone play action pass and took a shot down the field. We could add a different different situation here. We asked him to throw a play action. Pass those five yards down the field Chris. Jones has made a good player. But that's the right call right. It's this is why you know it's amazing. You're the I've heard. Nobody talk about the the field goal on the fourth in to there in the third quarter and I thought to me that was his worst play call of the whole game by far. I that you cannot kick field goals against the chiefs in that situation and to on something else you said. This is why you're the fastest rising stars. They said he was terrified of the chiefs at the end of the first half. And if you also you watch you know there was a great video the NFL released on Youtube of The the final minutes of the chiefs comeback and even when the chiefs scored the chiefs were coming. He was so scared. And that's because even makes a comment to whoever's in his headset about we you know we've only got five minutes here and that we can't get do he. He was scared and not aggressive. And that was. I thought way worse than any of the play calls like you said about the second down there where he threw it. That would be the niners fan. That was telling I thought it was rough. I agree I agree that and I know Carl I played for Kyle..

"Or receive the play called him from the one eleven of the A. never now was the play called Marchand well you never know and I'm not telling you yeah he'll never tell wow that would have been so good to see my heart shop and when the five yards back meant no marshon in there let's throw ends no pass interference call no review of it let's get one back down to the one yard line and it's down at the inch and the end of the one hundred regular season ends on the very rare walk off quarterback sneak by Jimmy grovel and the one seeded San Francisco forty Niners I'm telling you part three is coming I feel that my bones part three is coming divisional playoff round and I would sign for it right now NFC west most entertaining deepest most talented division in the NFL and when you're an argument is not even a close second I NFC south has Jamison stay in it with his thirty for thirty and obviously the saints are up the class of the honestly in my mind actor you know who we haven't I know they're very talented the falcons or are interesting in a rubber necking style this year got it name me another division anywhere close to the NFC west where the quote unquote worst team has kind of Mari doing what he did this year he was the truth he was a he had a terrific season did his statistically terrific season the winds weren't there but Arizona I'm with a reason why Seattle was not playing for bye week last night it's because colour Mari in the cardinals went in there and what it is Brett Hundley being the one to wrap it up in week sixteen what a division defending NFC champs when nine games don't make it finished in third place the rams when the only games finishing third come on take some phone calls here on the rich Eisen show before we get to hear dead John Meraz spoken right one of the corners of the job yeah yeah yeah we'll get to that in a second let's let's take some phone calls Evan in Columbus Ohio you're on the rich Eisen show my up my apologies for your Buckeyes and then resume your Buckeye yes I am you know what there's always next year and no hard feelings will will get for it but Hey happy Hanukkah thank you for taking my call thanks and appreciating you hate you know that the great thing about Peter king is he got his start in his reporting career in Cincinnati and he speaks very fondly about learning about football at the head bowed Paul Brown who was part of the NFL one hundred yeah the team and you know what I I know I know sort of the vote there's a couple layers my question so I I I look to Ian Rapoport she'd earlier any said don Martindale the defensive coordinator for the ravens is getting looked at by the Cleveland Browns and if you took the job he would bring Joe Brady the passing game coordinator for Ellis you formerly of the same as is often the coordinator of me in my bangles friends I have been watching Joe Brady to come with Joe borough to Cincinnati because of the great things they've done and I was just curious what your thoughts are on that you can have it now apple yeah I will last you know maybe make Shea tomorrow since he was covered in Alice you and eight there at the that the game in Atlanta thanks to call Evan I think that would be a nice crew I mean to bring the passing game coordinator that has clearly changed things for Ellis you somebody tweet Hey you know but Jabbar looks like breeze factor like yeah he does you know what the passing game coordinator that's really step the game up came from Sean Payton yeah and his staff kids been amazing it's been amazing kid has been are amazing and I'm assuming he will be just as good in the NFL I mean he he looks like he's he knows what to do pretty snappy doesn't look to be bothered he does he looks to be unflappable he does look to be cool in the pocket he does know what he's doing he's our eyes are always down the field he throws back shoulder when he needs to he throws to a high pointed receiver when he needs to you know what will really help that next year AJ green right I know this says he wants to stay our Graham ray hall who as trolled me all the time it has put me in an Ohio state gear because I lose batch to him all the time easy he reached out to me mad during the game and he gives what he texted me you agree with targeting the targeting call changed the tenor of the game it would have been forced the I'm I'm talking about the fiesta yes yes you were probably in try was still on the planet almost in Los Angeles so Ohio state's landed on and they are controlling the game in the trenches their offense of line is dominating their defensive line is doing what Ohio state's defensive line does Trevor Lawrence had pressured his face all the time they could not get a TN going when the running game and their best wide receiver was out and its third and long they send a Blitzer whose clear runs straight in like he's not blocked and down goes Bob borrow in a two touchdown game for Ohio state sixteen often down got but not down goes far down because Lawrence and concepts upon and instead targeting is called right by the way no flag on the play that always comes in because then sure enough of the player's name escapes me did connect helmets did lower is had had a clear shot on Lawrence in real time just look like man what a head boy here comes climbs in and allow states a chance to really extend the game here so here he text me you agree with targeting how do you call targeting the player ducks into it I responded I responded it looked like football in the replay your guy lowered his head that is fifteen yards the NFL get your head to either side of Lawrence's body in square up John wait is namely we got injected and then I wrote parenthetically all in chase young that tied him to which he did zero back it's B. S. and the refs know what injecting Wade really hurts S. U. and that's when I busted out the Jerry Seinfeld that's a shame Jeff move along server is giving you enough of my professional opinion but promotion takes over here and I like you said in real time looks like a football play but you when you slow it down you know the world drops the head and you can't hit him with the crown your helmet you just can't get a clear shot at him put your head on either side of Trevor large you had in you but now I try to bomb up change the game if I'm not mistaken twenty one unanswered Clemson points were put up after that that kid JK Dobbins on Ohio state his phone nominal what a dynamic big play runner and he was going in and out a line up he got his ankle twisted can't wait to see him at the next level some of these running backs were seen Ellis use running back Constance running back Ohio state running back holy crap they are going to be great at the next level man they just had a second gear thought was going to join us in a second top of our number three let's go to well Wesley in California you're here on the rich Eisen show what's up Wesley Hey rich what's going on and for some of them thanks brother we've been all this time ridge five years in Wesley I'm glad you finally well you know I live in the more it I'm I'm on the romance I gotta listen and and drive at the same time okay hands free give me your questions so so I want to talk to you and see if if it's just me available at you know what but so I gotta say just just from looking at the at the recent patriots play it I'm I'm pretty sure that the patriots dynasty is over I mean it you know if you look at Tom Brady and yeah he's a great quarterback there's no doubt bill Belichick is one of the greatest coaches of all time you can't deny it but you know when you're relying on your defense to score your points some is rock so I mean you don't want to do I need to give his ears until Wesley I mean there's no crock there's no crock grow okay grumpy you know is going to be essentially if the patient's stomach the Superbowl that's that's going to be the answer to your question they have a wider backer catching touchdowns it tied him now I know thanks to call Wesley I mean it's not broke there's no crock there's Adleman it is a bunch of guys that are still learning how to be professionals info door set and soon came halfway through the Brady sound bite get play this for sound bite this is where you know it's different man because if you remember you know last year Brady was was saying nobody believed they were playing the nobody believes in Iran everyone thinks we so I guess what it worked this year nobody believes in them now if this is a and instead of playing the nobody believes in this card this is the Brady we got yesterday Tom what's your confidence level in the state of the offense after the regular season and do you think it's good enough to come back and make Superbowl run at this point I think we got it you know think about put in trying to win one game and you know nothing about you know make things other than that so we we we can play where cable got beat and now go play next weekend got played up at our next week the Brady last year would have been like I keep thinking that tell everybody that now this Brady's like he knows there's no crock he also does no one week at a time that's all it takes so let's win against the Titans and then will show up in Kansas city and see how that you feel about that if we go up ten nothing he's concerned about going up ten nothing or if the cheese go up ten nothing that's the difference in the Brady now as opposed to last year and it's not just his own supposedly diminishing skills that's the concern for knowing on right now eight four four two oh four rich number to dial here on the show and I do have a great story again from that and it fell one hundred series where Brady was the in studio guest to lead off the quarterback two hour finale is just an amazing piece of television I'm so honored to be part of that's next week she of the store it's far related it's dynamite that's next on the rich Eisen show.
"marchand " Discussed on Hockey Today
"Jake says thanks for getting shell on Don since we all know the Michelle is the biggest Brad Marchand fan going. Can we get her to say something? Nice about him. He is a master Twitter. Brad Marchand z master Twitter. My goodness and the NHL PA player pool came out and said, he was the best trash talker. He can even do it through social media. He quote tweets himself trash talking chirping like other members of the Boston media, just oh, man. So I'll give him that. And you know, what as much as he's the kind of guy that literally I just would hate to play against and a story. And that's really all it is. And I I would love to have him on my team because he's a phenomenal phenomenal hockey player. I can I can't say this. That's me being nice. And I'll reserve everything else. Okay. Makes sense makes sense Chris's. Hi, Donna, Michelle considering Tampa's dominance this season. If they don't win the Stanley Cup this season be more or less disappointing than the eighty six oiler team. That was the team that lost to the flames when Smith but the goal is. Own that. And the ninety six wings team that has the record for most points in the season losing in the conference final to Colorado. Would it be at that level? Michelle, I think it would be more than that here. Same here because I think they're going to pass that ninety six to twenty teams in terms of points. So it's definitely they've got like they have nothing to play for now at the end of the season..
