The Murder Case of Yvonne Layne: Searching for the Star Witnesses
"At this point. I've been in touch with david thorne for nearly two years. David has been in prison for twenty two years for allegedly murdering his ex girlfriend yvonne lane on march thirty first nineteen ninety nine since then david has adamantly proclaimed his innocence and the bizarre murder case and conviction has been featured on multiple news tv e programs and so for the past two years. I have been consumed like dwayne poelman. Warned would happen and so i decided to finally enlist the help of professional private investigators. John harden danny wexler and jason baldwin from the west memphis three and his organization proclaimed justice so back on the ground in ohio. We continued our search for chris. Campbell remember john. And danny thought rose and chris were the most key people in this entire investigation chris and his girlfriend rose. Were the star witnesses at trial. Twenty-three-year-old rose an twenty one year old. Chris both testified at trial. They said they saw joe at the carnation mall around closing. They said he told them he was in town for a job and they said that job was to kill a girl. The card joe allegedly wrote his phone number on for. Chris was presented at trial to prove that joe was there with them the native the murder and at this point. We don't really question that they were all there together but what happened while they were there is what we wonder about by trial three months after the murder some details of what they remembered changed from what they'd set in their initial statements and then a bit more change between those statements. The time they took the stand six months after that rose initially said joe was in white pants and a white track jacket by trial. The pants were black. Rose also said that. The knife that joe showed them was definitely not a pocket knife. She said it was an eight inch knife in a sheath by trial it was a pocket knife. We tried to find rose on our first trip because we had many questions about her statement. We wanted to know why it changed and also about something. She told police in her tape statement. Because i'm scared for my life. Because chris campbell for me if i said anything he met me. And that's why i've been scared. His oliver nagai as race. People do things when they're scared. Like sometimes people lie and we wondered. was it possible. She lied

This shouldn't be entirely surprising during oral arguments. In the case which questioned whether the nc double a. was permitted to cap education related benefits to college athletes. A district court ruled that it couldn't and the supreme court upheld that decision. Cavanaugh was particularly aggressive in his questioning of ncwa lawyers. It does seem schools are conspiring with competitors agreeing with competitors. Let's say that to pay no salaries for the workers who are making the school billions of dollars on the theory. That consumers won't the schools to pay their workers. Nothing cavanaugh said during the march thirty first proceedings and that just seems entirely circular and even somewhat disturbing and his opinion cavanaugh seemed to invite more legal challenges to the nc double a.'s cap on all forms of compensation for athletes. Not just those tethered to education. Which was the narrower focus. This particular supreme court case. Nowhere else in america can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers. Pandemic Immunoprivilege and how to get Vaccinated
"We hear it in the fake have been talking from the very beginning about the impact that this pandemic is having on black indigenous latino latina and poc communities last week. Vaccinations opened up for all of the adults in the united states. And wow over. Forty percent of the population have received at least one dose of the vaccine as of this past sunday but always with this pandemic. It's like yes but the rate has been declining with less than three million vaccines being distributed per day. And that's the lowest level since march thirty first. So it's a little bit like what's going on and today we're gonna talk all about this next phase of the pandemic in terms of vaccination equity and this notion of immune privilege which i've been thinking a lot about because i am now. I had a social gathering on friday night in the park. And i'm i realized my privilege to feel safe enough to do that with my girlfriends who were all vaccinated so kisha in a recent interview with seagulls samuel for vox. You said that. There's a moral and a mutual obligation for people to get vaccinated though of course as we know the access thing isn't equitable right. I mean just even new york the fact that you have to have a computer you have to have internet. You have to know how to do it. You have to know how to refresh. So can you talk to his kisha about this question of moral obligation and how you understand this. In terms of the next phase of open access truly open access in terms of vaccinations. So i think what's really important to remember. Is that when you call something. In obligation it puts certain obligations on other people so if i that getting vaccinated against covid nineteen is a moral obligation that then puts the obligations on public health services on governments on our healthcare system to make sure that people can't even get access to the vaccine right now. He is also not increase the refugee limits and so the fact that that all hasn't happened as quickly as it could is a little bit worrying for people that are practitioners immigration law and and immigration advocates immigration reform advocates. And and. i think that that something. We will certainly be watching very closely but you know. I don't know that it's the right approach to try to stop people that are trying to survive especially when we have a strong system of humanitarian immigration. Already in place. That's what we should be looking at this as the situation as humanitarian crisis in. I think we should be approaching it with much more empathy and compassion because ultimately they're gonna come here and they're going to work and pay taxes and try to be good citizens and that is something we should be embracing rather than turning away from for up -solutely that clarifies some of it and Certainly for global sooners. How Is the First Quarter Looking for Investors?
"What else in. The first quarter just ended guests. We're already twenty five percent. Third twenty twenty one and i thought we take a look and see how this year is shaping up for investors and so far. It's a pretty good one well depending on what you're investing so the quarter ended on march thirty first as it always does for the first quarter so all the numbers. I'm going to provide our as of that date things along. Donald look a little different by the time he listen to this but i think the general themes will likely remain more of those teams. Is that all of the major indexes are near at all time highs just awfully nice but still some types of stocks are doing better than others so the s p five hundred is up six point five percent for the year and considering that it's historical average is about ten percent over the course of a whole year turning almost seven percent for the first three months is pretty darn good now. The nasdaq which has outperformed the s. and p. five hundred every calendar year since two thousand and sixteen is not doing quite as well in fact. The nasdaq was actually up. Just one point three percent for the year. As of march thirtieth but then surged on the last day of march one and a half percent bringing its first quarter performance to almost three percent or so As we know as very tech heavy and the technology sector was the second worst performing sector in the first quarter returning two point four percent edging out the one point eight percent from consumer staples the winners so far in twenty twenty one have been industrials. Half percent financials up sixty percent and the biggest energy up almost thirty one percent this year so many of these stocks in these sectors. That are doing well so far. In the year where beaten down in our rebounding which of course is classic value investing and indeed value stocks are up more than eleven percent so far this year but the biggest winners are the smallest stocks. The snp six hundred small cap index is up eighteen point. Four percent and the russell micro cap index is up twenty six percent so far this year international stocks have lagged the s&p five hundred so far in two thousand twenty one returning around four and a half percent but they closed out two thousand twenty pretty strong so when you look back at the last trailing twelve months or so. Us stocks and international stocks are about neck and neck which is looking better for international stocks. Because they've been lagging stocks for a long time. I'm kind of reluctant to mention this. But i i suppose i have to in that as bitcoin is up one hundred percent so far this year. I don't expect to give any updates on bitcoin too much in the future but who knows. I mean you can't really not bring it up if you're going to talk about twenty twenty one

What Binds the Hands of Love?
"Christian March thirty one. What binds the hands of love. We always thank god. The father of our lord. Jesus christ when we pray for you since we heard of your faith in christ jesus and the love that you have for all the saints because of the hope laid up for you in heaven colossians one three through five. The problem with the church today is not that there are too many people who are passionately in love with heaven. The problem is not that professing. Christians are retreating from the world spending half their days reading scripture and the other half seeing about their pleasures in god all the while indifferent to the needs of the world. That's not happening. The people of god are not so full of love to god that they spend half their days in his word. The problem is that professing. Christians are spending ten minutes reading scripture and then half their day making money and the other half loving and repairing what they spend it on. It's not heavenly mindedness. That hinders love for the lost. At hurting of this world. It is worldly mindedness that hinders love even when it is disguised by a religious routine on the weekend. Where is the person whose heart is so passionately in love with the promised. Glory of heaven that he feels like an exile and sojourner on the earth. Where's the person who has so tasted the beauty age to come that the diamonds of the world looked like marvel's from the dollar store and the entertainment of the world feels empty and the moral causes of the world are too small because they have no view of

"Welcome to security mutual life insurance company of new. York's snl planning minute where we share concise and thought-provoking financial ideas for individuals families and business owners security mutual. The company. that cares. Hello this is bill. Rinaldi with another edition of security mutuals. Snl planning minute in today's episode. Business owners beware of an involuntary partial plan termination due to covid nineteen twenty. Twenty was undoubtedly a very difficult year for many small business owners struggling to keep their businesses afloat while their businesses were forced to close or limit operations as a result of government mandates attempting to slow or stop the spread of the virus that resulted in the layoff of many employees. Many of those layoffs were anticipated to be temporary but as the pandemic continued into twenty twenty one additional complications. For small businesses have arisen one of those complications involved businesses that have a defined contribution retirement plan such as a 401k plan in place for the benefit of employees and the potential for a partial plan termination which can cause even greater financial hardship to a business when a partial plan termination occurs. The law requires that affected plan. Participants become fully vested in their plan benefits including employer matching contributions and profit sharing contributions. That's true even if there is a schedule that hasn't yet been fulfilled by the affected employees. The failure to comply with this rule has harsh consequences. The plant can be disqualified resulting in the loss of all tax benefits to the employer and the plan participants although the internal revenue code and the employee retirement income security act of nineteen seventy four as amended better known as orissa. Don't define what constitutes a partial plan termination. The irs in guidance has interpreted it to me that there has been a twenty percent or greater reduction in plan participation over and applicable period which is typically the plan year. Also a reduction in plan participation must be due to quote employer initiated terminations which would be terminations other than from death disability or retirement the irs acknowledges that an employer initiate termination would include events outside the employers control such as depressed economic conditions. Clearly if employees were laid off because of the pandemic those terminations would be employer initiated resulting in lower plan participation and potentially causing a partial plan termination on july thirtieth two thousand twenty the irs issued guidance that employees laid off due to the pandemic and rehired by the end of twenty twenty. We're not to be counted for purposes of partial plant termination requirements. Since we're now into twenty twenty one that guidance is not very helpful however the consolidated appropriations act of twenty one. See a twenty twenty. One was signed into law. On december twenty seven twenty twenty division ee of the a a thousand twenty one is more popularly known as the taxpayers certainty and disaster relief. Act of twenty twenty. Tc dra section two old nine of the t. c. Dra contains a temporary ruled that provides that a plan will not be treated as having had a partial plan termination during a plan year which includes the period beginning on march thirteenth twenty twenty and ending on march thirty first twenty twenty one if the number of active participants in the plan covered on march thirty first twenty twenty one is at least eighty percent of the number are march thirteen twenty twenty in other words section to oh nine of the dra provides employers until march thirty first twenty twenty one to rehire enough employees to avoid a partial termination status while that provision is helpful. The question remains as to whether the t. c. Dra goes far enough since the pandemic continues and does not appear that it will abate by march thirty first. Perhaps the new presidential administration and congress will renew this pandemic related relieved further into two thousand twenty one to avoid unintended terminations of retirement plans. In the meantime employers with 401k plans and other types of defined contribution plans need to immediately consult with their tax and legal advisors as well as their plan administrators to determine if a potential partial plan termination is a concern for them and their business as a result of the pandemic as developments occur.
