A measure of inflation that is closely tracked by the Federal Reserve increased in April

"A key inflation measure take higher last month. It's a price index, the Federal Reserve closely watches, and it was up 0.4% from March to April, much higher than the previous months, 0.1% rise. Consumer spending also jumped with the biggest increase since January as people bought new cars, computers, clothes, and gas. The two increases together are a sign of both a resilient economy and high inflationary pressures. The data likely complicate the fed's next move. The Central Bank has signaled it will likely stop its run of ten straight interest rate hikes at its meeting next month. Sagar Meghani, Washington.

Chirping sounds lead airport officials to bag filled with smuggled parrot eggs

"Baby parrots seized from a smuggler are being cared for in Florida. A bag filled with smuggled parrot eggs was found at the Miami international airport, since hatching in March, 24 parrots are being cared for by the rare species conservatory foundation. His birds are curious. They're loving, they're sweet. Their babies. Everything's developing in front of your eyes. And they're beautiful little creatures. It was the hatchlings faint chirping inside a carry on bag at the airport that brought them to the attention of a customs and border protection officer. Doctor Paul reylo of the conservatory says a vast majority of parrot trafficking cases and in tragedy, Paris live a long time, they are sentient creatures. They're highly intelligent, very social, and these guys deserve a chance. The question will be, where will they wind up? Biden Defaulting on the Debt to Own the Crypto Bros?

"Well Friends the president has gone and again made the debt ceiling political for the crypto crowd. And so today we are diverting temporarily from our normal Bitcoin and crypto industry coverage to move into the most significant market issue right now, which is the debt ceiling debate. This will serve as a bit of a primer. I will avoid the temptation to get political with it, as always, and we'll just try to understand exactly where we are going into this critical week. Right now, the debt ceiling is currently at nearly $31.4 trillion, with around 24.6 trillion held as bonds by investors, private institutions, and other market actors. The U.S. debt is the largest of any nation state, exceeding the amount currently outstanding for the next four countries combined. In mid January, the limit of borrowing was reached, leading the US Treasury to begin what's known as extraordinary measures to stretch the remaining cash a little further. These measures trim budget expenditure around the edges by deferring time and sensitive spending, such as making contributions into government worker savings plans, and topping up the assets held in the exchange stabilization fund. Earlier this month, treasury secretary Janet Yellen announced that despite these measures, the treasury looked set to run out of cash by the beginning of next month, leaving officials precious little time to sort out a deal. The negotiations had been ongoing for the better part of the last few weeks, although heading into the weekend the tone had soured. Earlier last week, both President Biden and House Republican speaker Kevin McCarthy, who is heading up negotiations for the GOP, expressed optimism that a deal could be close. And yet as the weekend rolled around, no deal was there to be had. Now part of the reason is that the two parties are very far apart in terms of what they want. The GOP are asking for significant budget cuts. In particular, they're looking for cuts across social spending by ramping up work requirements for government aid, as well as kneecapping flagship democratic policies like clean energy incentives with the inflation reduction act, and additional funding for the IRS. Last month, Republicans passed a House bill which would suspend the debt ceiling until March of next year, but the bill contains such deep spending cuts that it was viewed as a nonstarter for Senate Democrats to consider.

Democrat Policies Bring Chaos and Crime to America

"Talking to John's mirac, you know, John, what I wanted to say was that what we're seeing at the southern border we're also seeing in places like San Francisco, which has become the human feces capital of the world. Thank you, Nancy Pelosi. We are seeing a breakdown of order of social order that we have never seen in America. It's absolutely astonishing that what we're, I was just talking to somebody yesterday who works in really, really super high end retail talking about wanting to have a footprint in San Francisco and realizing not a chance. There is no way we will risk having a storefront in San Francisco. So the Democrat policies seem sometimes intentionally and sometimes at least semi unintentionally to be bringing tremendous chaos and crime to the United States, which brings us to the story of the New York subway. Right. Daniel penny, who is a veteran of the U.S. Marines and he saw a psych dangerous homeless lunatic screaming yelling at threatening people on the New York City subway. And what he didn't realize is the new rules. The new rules is you don't do anything. You don't do anything to protect strangers. You don't even defend yourself. The new rules are America. You don't defend yourself. Because you remember the mccluskey's in Missouri, a mob of arsonists marched onto their front lawn. They wave a gun at them. They're charged with a crime and stripped of their law licenses. So they can't make a living. They're lawyers. They're stripped of their law licenses. It's like you forbidden to write ever again.

I think what led to a starting to launch of, you know these October one availability, dates and You know, then having your traditional kind of March one April 1 availability dates on the on the back end of that is that the inflows kind of changed a little bit when it comes to golf, beans, seasonal when it comes to purchasing, just obviously you're going to sell a lot more golf clubs in July that you are in December. Um, but at the same time when you actually study the data, it is not that big of a drop off anymore. It's kind of evened out a little bit, too. Where almost every month is, uh, is almost the same. Um, obviously, you know, your big months of June July August are still going to be there, and they're still going to be top dog. "Welcome to parenting about podcasts. The week of march first. Twenty twenty one. Every week we chat about the things parents are talking about complaining about and obsessing about right. now. I'm terry moro and i'm here with catherine. Hello echo. hello and nicole. Eric's there this week. We are complaining on behalf of our kids and obsessing about good decisions. We've made were also taking a couple of breaks an entertainment discussion and a recommendation roundup. Today we are talking about times for parents now nicole. You found that your accountant from last year's taxes called you a homemaker a know that seems inaccurate. Well or insufficient. I want it to be well first of all. I was taken aback because it just seems a little archaic the whole term homemaker like is that even appropriate for twenty twenty one. I'm not sure like a official forum version of housewife like says that looks extra dollop of formality to it but still no still. I know but isn't there another way. And other title of scribe ing what we do. I think we're more like ceo's of of our of our household. Because i mean. I'm doing more than making a home. I'm doing the bills. I'm doing the taxes. I'm you know raising kids. I'm doing so much..

Could you tell me a little bit more about what's next for you. Yes since we last talked zip code hosts this power interview. Don't do it all year long than you have other races looking at wanting to learn and all eight and now they're getting websites they need to because again more people are active black history in february and when they're not active they can come to my page march first. And we're gonna march i. I'm gonna feature because it's women's history month in march so i'm gonna feed feature agan. Decided what it's gonna be but it's of course it's going to be black women but when they want black history all year long they can come to my page or other pages or other apps or things like that but i enjoy black. Thank you for sharing car letter. Definitely appreciate data granted from ceo. Nieves saying what what what. What are your thoughts of what karla was speaking about. What's almost exactly what. I would echo black history month this level of separation just dictating. Its day and i didn't know it was only for week initially given given day or given this month in february or these other demographics have their own this day months to me. It's natural for america. Naturally separate a senator things almost in the fabric. But if you look at like if you average american what this young pour me. They have no idea what that what that day is. It probably wouldn't do as well as if it was. Give it another name. Something else that you know kind of masquerades as a craft brewery and then they kind of get like. That's that's where my mind goes. Is that the chains. I hope none of them are listening but these conversations have to be happening with some of them..

"I went outside and made smoked guacamole perfect example for them for the super bowl. I literally cut avocados and having took him out there and smoke them and then smoked corn and the publicity to make not be straight up like spend an hour like getting things ready to make a hot dog on a freaking traeger. A throw it in the microwave anymore. The best hotdogs never had it so good so you guys if we can get back in march first or not so What burn you guys. The the news broke Little while back about March i would burn becoming part of the same family which is also the family of fig-leaf in Talk a little bit about how that kind of factors into this. Bigger picture of who you guys are and who you're becoming. It's weird as we sit here in this room. When i started here three years ago. And this was the whole company right and now You know we have this cathedral of a taproom out front that we put our heart and soul into constructing and then as soon as we were done with that partnership happened and that fold came in and now we have that amazing taproom and as these. I don't wanna say opportunities but it is right like like would burn came up and and before before we get too far into into would burn talking about like that. You know when this was what this place was so the first time i sat down here and and did a show the week before i think the taproom opened up we were sitting there at the bar and the idea of taproom almost was just. Oh we have a taproom but it's here because people are telling us we have to have. It wasn't really part of what this was all about very quickly that changed yup and then it kept changing and it kept changing and has just been this huge snowball of of of change for what march i is. We've very quickly. When march i open. I wasn't here. I came in the planning stages for the other taproom. And but i think it has to speak to that like mindset like the whole brewing business in cincinnati changed right about as march first. I think was the thirty second brewery or thirty fed. Have to like look at them. Have a list. I think it was right right around the mid thirties. And we sit here. Now with seventy or sixty sixty six on how you count something crazy like that in the metro area and we realized very very quickly that distribution wasn't gonna float the boat so we needed to make a destination and create Environment where people would come in and drink are beer here because the shelves even now when they're crazy competitive then you've got other people coming in from out of town right like in columbus. All of us in columbus brewing is here in there just throwing bangers on the shelves like you know i. It's it's it's so hard to stand out on the shelves at coming into this as as as a new brewery so we realized very quickly. Obviously the tap room's were play for us for long term success so to build a taproom. That was comfortable that people would want to come to. It's it's also crazy that you can have the best beer in the world and the best beer in the world is on a shelf somewhere sitting on a shelf somewhere in that you know you can go around here and beers that people use to to flock to be zombie duster or whatever. It is sits on the shelf now hop slam sits on a shelf goes to close out because people aren't buying like the there's so much happening on shelves in stores that That world is is different now like it's not always just about what it's not about the liquid in a any package anymore. It's about this other bigger thing of what of why people go to breweries are wiping drink. Craft beer in a world where you know you talk about craft beer changing or cincinnati craft beer changing the that's not even factoring a pandemic world into that right now. Now we've entered into this other phase of existence where you know maybe people are just going to kroger buying groceries grabbing a six pack of beer and then going home and they're if they're getting their craft beer they're getting other ways or there just stopping at one taproom and picking up here to go and like it's it's it's a strange world down Having having multiple tap room's that are in different parts of town that have different personalities. How does that factor into today's world of craft beer. It's a very big question. Like i'm just trying to the profound this of it is is. I don't even know the answer to that. Question having the having multiple tap room's Really we don't wanna see a neighborhood lose its brewery right so if for whatever reason like if we were to to go out right if march i was done i would hope that like the people that are that love to come here would be able to come here with whoever else owned this before and had not. Have you know a furniture store or something like that in here. Old fire houses one of the places that has closed that nothing has moved in there. Maybe because he still wants to open a backup whatever. Sure it's one of those places that i think that craft brewery did so much for the area that it was that somebody hasn't slid into that it. Just i i look at it. That breaks my heart to see that. What that brewery meant for that the neighborhood even that town case. Yeah and the fact that it is just sitting there idle. Just it's heartbreaking. Did he is and when you think about like we were talking about how we knew the distribution wasn't the play. They were everywhere. Yeah like they were destroying everywhere and it didn't sustain them Yeah that's a perfect example. Of like. I just i we as as these Breweries they phase out and they don't work out. We have an amazing team. We have an amazing back office staff. We have Awesome leadership and as we can You know help sustain craft brewing in that you know in in walnut hills not that holy cow esoteric. Just a monster is in the beer from the jump. Will we went down there for industry opening. Yeah i mean it's really hard. We all know this as Individuals have been in the industry for awhile that opening up the doors and having every single. Beer be fundamentally solid and still like make you want to think about right like only fundamentally solid. It's just it's a delicious and well-balanced beer like that shit blew me out of like blew. My mind was so good. We had a great time there. They were super nice to us. As well and i mean tapper was great the experience experiences. Great the great and the beer was even better. Yeah so like to have walnut hills like have like lose would burn like would be sad so we have..

"Josh. Crushes the yeah. He's not here today. That's that's why we have to shut the does not do well in eight inches of snow. He lives out like to an he said us. A photo in his car is nile park in the street. He got crust. So yeah it's it's fun to me to see a place like this that can I mean not that it's not. It's really thinking outside the box. I mean let's coverage determined in general but like it just makes sense like it's just it's it seems so it just makes sense like if if you're distilling. Why wouldn't you wrap it into the brewing side. And if you've got a brewings why wouldn't you at least dabble insider. Why wouldn't you play around with with seltzer whitney like it. All just it seems very Very common sense to me but yet nobody. Nobody plays around with the way you guys do. And that that's fun to watch and fund to fund experience drinker because i think that As you know craft beer geeks which i think the majority of people that listen to the show or are you know sometimes you get afraid of the other stuff you get afraid of you know going outside of your comfort zone and and maybe trying zelter or booze or whatever. It is and Having a place that you can go to the that's a brewery and you have your your your beer that you you're comfortable with but you can kinda play outside the lines a little bit and try other stuff too. That's that's that's exciting. That's fun that gets you into other things. It does and we like a lot of time. I'll drop something on. Brian's plate like we had our our proved event last week we had a bunch of just a table tasting tasting tables where you could come and taste our spirits and went to brian. I dunno like six weeks ahead. And i'm like handy. Four bottles of spirits veteran fused. Yeah yeah and. I'm like test batch. Something go. He comes to my office one day and he's like blueberry donut blueberry with blueberry doughnut whiskey pink lemonade vodka. Coconut cream pineapple rum and rubio schnapps like go all of a sudden they all like exist right and he's like working and he's like what do you think of this this house this house this and i don't know what we got ripped one day perks of the job you act like some of the stuff is just like a Like i wanna make this. I'm gonna make it like it's a longer process than that with a lot of these things though right. Like how playing with rip your schnapps for right. Yeah we have. sometimes it's impulsive like with versus example. Especially when it's like these events that are a lot smaller scale for like we both have the luxury to balance ideas off each other and get really creative like the the last proof that we had a blackberry sage. Oh was super good. That sounds good for corn pink. Pepper corn impeach peach. There's stuff like that. That like isn't necessarily scalable because a true infusion but and it's doesn't cater to every single demographic but it was. It was fun for us. This one. this round was more for like things that we can scale up and things that we could possibly see ourselves making in the later part to this year in kind of doing it in a large scale. So those logical us walking in which was what would gives to the point that you said that that one like those those examples take a little bit longer to to lead up to what percentage of the things that you guys play around with are just those kind of spur of the moment. Can we do this. What would this be like versus like big long term projects that you're just trying to dial in to try to figure out if it's something that is scalable so i'd say in like my younger years here. Everything was not with the intent to scale but as we've grown and kind of Experienced successes with with these products that were tasked batching and whatnot. It's kind of that's always an intention is to be able to scale it right. Yeah it's it's exciting as a as as somebody who is just really geeky about drinking drunk is that what you would call that alcohol enthusiasts as somebody who just really into Into drinks and drinking culture and the products that come around that This is just such a fun place and it just feels it feels good and it feels It feels very natural the way you guys do it too. Like there's there are other places that when they come out with a product feels A product to feeling that That's been run through fourteen different focus groups to figure out exactly what it's supposed to taste like and yet it's good but like it doesn't feel just doesn't feel natural and everything that comes out of here still feels like a brewery like craft brewery. There's something about that that craft side of it that i think a lot of bigger places are starting to lose a little bit. It makes sense. Yeah absolutely and we have for example. This proved event wasn't the best example like i stated but we still do a stout blowout event every year and we do a site or palooza then every year and there's definitely examples in those lineups that aren't meant to be scaled up like we did one of our more notorious ones as an everything bagel style which tasted like an everything bagel. I mean it's not something. I want to drink a growler of or maybe even a pint of but but again. That's the other side of craft beer like sheriff fun side of just you. You go into a place to try things that you've never had before the Maybe because it's it's weird or because you don't want to drink a ton of what was The fifth they did a A garlic something or other for urban when they first started doing bewilder fast whenever you're beers and there was like a garlic beer. Somebody did some kind of like cheese. Something there was just really off the wall stuff that was. That was a horrible like so horrible that it was so fun to try is what they said. It was right like what they're shooting for and the urban on the beer side is is notorious for doing some stuff like that to that just just because they can they do it. And it's like a good example for them. I don't know if they plan on pickle being this big thing that it is now they definitely didn't pickled goes it tastes like pickle juice and it's amazing. I'm telling you the beer can chicken with pickle. Ooh i've never had that. I haven't done it yet either. But it's on the list for the summer is to get a canape goal and do beer can chicken over it genius and let it ride. You gotta get your pickle now. Yeah because they're not releasing again. The summer everything. I understand the christmas pickle. the leftover. yeah i need. There is still some at jungle gym. I saw out. I don't know about pickle and chicken now. Brian are chicken. Wings at home and pickle juice okay and i will put them against anybody. They're so good so we need to have a chicken wing showdown. Now i'm in. Let's close we can get a tracker to. Let's try and go off a whole tangent triggers and the ties of smoking food with craft beer the way that the minds that of how things work. It's the best. It's the only way to cook food. We've i even this time of year. It gets cold outside. And i'm like scraping a foot of snow off of the grill. Trying to you know. Make something really stupid. That would just two minutes inside on the stove and smoke it. It was twelve degrees.

"Gentlemen boys and girls. I'm denarlie this is since he threw cast the voices sends craft. I'm i'm really really killing grumpy right now. What i'm trying not to be I've been. I'm not annoyed that you guys. I met march first because they saved my life tonight. Thank you guys. We got your back. We'll turn this around home I mean i'm not gonna go too deep into a should but i'm not going to go too deep into it. I had a show scheduled on the other side of town Miles and miles away from here There was an epic snowstorm last night. You guys all know that you saw the snow there was like i don't know depending on where you're at nine ten inches of snow that you had to scrape off your car. Took the day off. Work to record a nice show across town with a brewery that Could use some good pr and some good Storytelling and cleared off my car cleared by schedule drove across town. And there was nobody there to record the show with me. Because i i i don't know i don't know stood up so Got grumpy drank. A couple beers stayed grumpy after drinking those beers. We'll put it that way and put out the call on social media for somebody to save my life and helped me make a show tonight and you guys answered the call We're so happy happy to be here. I am eternally grateful. Always to you guys coming through when i need you to To help me and I'm always happy to sit here and have a drink because you guys have some really great stuff appreciate happy to have you here. I i will say Before i talk about what. I'm drinking right now. I think you can find quotes of me saying that. I do not like belgian style beers. You didn't know that when you selected this. i did But i did. I have said that. I don't like belgian style beers but then every time i've had a belgian style beers since then i've really really enjoyed it so i think that i do like them but for some reason in my head i still think that i don't like them but I'm drinking double chin dual dual chen And it's fantastic it. It packs all of that Big kind of belgian character but stays drinkable. The which i guess kind of is is that your uh your thing. Trainable three couples. Ohio's drinkable crafts. Still up on the on the girder in the back of In the back taproom. I'll speak to that beer a little bit just because it's one of the favorite things that i've ever brewed real. I mean i mean so like. I'm probably similar you. Where do i like belgian beer. I know i like belgian beer. But i'm very selective when it comes to belgian beer brewed that with the spirit the intent to kind of like hit characteristics that universal to to other styles as well. So it's not just the one belgian the clove clover the the the banana or the the other characteristics. That could come with it right. I will say that like in our in our production planning meetings. I fought against belgium. Because i don't i'm with you. I don't like belgians. Like i don't like especially like trials and stuff like that like i just feel like. They're so maybe my experience with them is pretty limited but i typically don't like belgian beer so obviously i got outranked when it came to that And i love this one. Like i'm about it. We kind of snuck this one into the production schedule as well. It was kind of like. Oh we've got like kind of a hole like no one's really like given the green light for a for a belgian especially like a doable or a double however you want to say but it was kinda like well. We ordered the ingredients yard. You guys have in correct me. If i'm wrong here. You have a little bit of freedom here with how many things are going on march first to kind of sneak in some fun little like that from time to time that i think other places may not have i think we're we're blessed to have obviously the production facility that freeze this area up to bruce some wild stuff like this was one of those things and and Especially with the all the different lines. So we order somebody ingredients for like You know the honey whiskey. That just came out all this honey. So i started making. You know bee's knees cocktails behind the bar with it and and those types of things that allow us to do Small test batches of things in all of our lines. It's we're not just making beer. So we'll order ingredients for a whisky and then somehow full those into a beer or a seltzer. Or you know we'll get experience those agrees to where it's like a will open those channels and those relationships with suppliers and we'll have maybe an extra gallon or two behind the bar or like after production and then it allows like you said us to kind of get a little bit creative without as much risk involved opens up this whole big world to especially when you start diving into cocktails and things like that of the things that you guys can do here that other places. Maybe some other places can do. But just don't they don't think about. I don't like you guys. Seems like are always thinking about all of these different pieces and how they relate to each other feel like i could be wrong and i may get an email about being wrong but i feel like a lot of the places that are brewery distilleries. Brewery is a feel like they keep everything really separate and they're like these different machines operating kind of close to each other but you guys it. It overlaps a lot and even the different locations a fig-leaf for march i and soon to be wood-burning The way all of those kind of overlap each other and become part of the same thing but still have their own personality. I think is really really interesting in something that we were not seeing yet in cincinnati. Besides here we've tried to make that a habit even like going through in aging like the imperial stout in our own bourbon barrels right. Like that's not. A lot of people can do can do that so for us to have that flexibility even from that simple an example of using our own barrels to age are beer and using then that barrel to then age bourbon again for the stout cast bourbon. I mean yeah for sure. Like all of those pieces have to coincide for us to be to deliver the experience that we do in the tap. Room's how do you keep control over all of that in in like a Maybe logistical way of of understanding. Everything that's going on and how it can relate to each other and kind of keeping it from you know not going off the rails and tearing self apart spreadsheets and a lot of conversation. Yeah we we have a rigid friday morning. Which is the worst for me. Who's on the service side of things like friday mornings the worst When we're trying to get ready for the weekend but we have a rigid friday morning meeting. And from that spurs other meetings right like you know. The president of the company is is in that meeting with us and he meets with all the department heads and then we make a plan and then it's up to us then as managers to fulfill that plan and we there's been some stuff that's volunteer. Clap the cracks for sure But we've been where got a good team i think. That's that's the testament to is is between the two of us Josh bath you all these guys like we have talent at every level That you talented. Every level plus josh plus josh.
