Arizona, Parents, and School Choice

"There was a huge vote for school choice and against school closures in the Texas primary Tuesday night. What's the attitude towards school closures and choice for parents in Arizona? Well, Arizona leads the nation. We have more students enrolled in our charter schools per CAPiTA than any other state in the nation. And more importantly, we now have open enrollment and we have I think more than half. I know more than half of our students go to a school other than the one they're assigned, which tells me that families care about choice and education. And so I plan to lead the way to give every family every parent the choice to send their kids to the school that best suits their needs. The one size fits all school system of the past is a relic. It is a relic of the past. We can and we must do better in Arizona will continue to lead the way on that.

"Maybe that's wrong. I wouldn't necessarily call it tart. Yeah that's where i would put it. Either it's dry and salty. What i'm getting with a lime flavor so it it it seems to not be hitting everything for me that i thought it would be now. Lets you get comfortable. Getting into the radio chatted. Is your beer will start with you. I'm actually going to go kinda low on this. I'm going to go six and a half. i just. It's just really not doing it for me. I'm gonna go lower than that. I'm going five point four. I'm a little bit between the two. I'm going to go about a six to five on this one for me. Slobber proved not terribly important demand. This beer. I don't care if i ever see again last of appear here tonight. This was a special request from from farley on the nerd show. We're talking about sours tonight. He's not a sour drinker. But we're going with the domingo mimosa sour to the three things i know two of the three things i like. What's domingo mean sunday. Yeah domingo's sunday all right well. I alex sundays to most is on. "We've got the cucumbers our on our you cohen with it. Like that's where. I i tend to look if i was a hardcore sour drinker. I give it a taste. And if angel i did i'd probably order one all right. Let's get into the ratings here. We'll we'll see where this all comes out doc What was ab on this. Only four point one percent let you. It's a light beer for sure. Let's get to the ratings. I'll let you go for your beer so this one is not a traditional sour. No by any stretch of the on stage. It's not and so it would be something. I'd order again to have two glasses in a row. I don't know so much that i would do that. Either but i do think it's quite tasty. I'm going to go with seven and a half on this one chad. I'm probably gonna follow right along there at the seven and a half Could i drink one. Yes what. I order another one probably not again. This is a beer. That i would drink. Maybe before or after massage and spa. I don't think it's something. I would order in the regular seven point. Five is up guys get. I'm gonna go lower than that. I'm going six point eight on this beer. Don't make you appears. I'm sorry i get it. You would be for for the people enjoy that. There's not there's you know our opinions aren't the only ones out there. I get that but our opinions are the ones who get to be put on. The radio show has already made faces a beer. But it's a huge contrast of what we drink. It's not tech route..

You've i want a different route tonight on these sour beers that we're doing i do like us our that kind of stretches the limits a little bit and so i brought in. Oak scher brewing. Company's son made cucumbers sour oaks. Year brewing is out of eugene oregon. This is their twelve four point one. The beer is an american sour ale with real cucumbers and they use an awful lot of melon hop aroma. To kind of give it notes bright honeydew that they say which is a sudden made. Cucumber is crisp. Tartan uniquely inspired the nailed what they were going for. Get the honeydew for sure. Yes so very cucumber. Do you remember that movie. Barnard were there like she's like brandel. There's cow outside how far there's going to be cows. I i want to say to cucumbers. Our there's going to be cucumbers in it because it is so cucumbers cherry. It's not green. No no it's not sarah enough to be piccoli. No it's not they did. They called their shot. They hit now. Why in the hell. You'd make cucumber beer. That's beyond me i. It's very spring. Larry spring-like it's very refreshing. I think of like laying out and you know those those fancy rich old ladies at a lot of those spas cover water because the cucumber in the water burger cucumber. Gin goes very well together. Because it's very refreshing. Why not put it into. And i mean it is refreshing but i actually think really hit the nail on the head with did. It's very melanie and the aroma very bright. You're and i actually find it. Refreshing that is not a normal tart fruits sour..

"Bad. you miss it. Because i don't feel like they've been open very long. I think a lot of people have driven by kind of notice. The sign change. And they're like what's going on there but didn't quite realize they're open who's open and what's open search. That's been a confusing. I think that's a huge part of everything opening right now for sure. So that's open in more distilling news Tough news out of elkins over the weekend. let's let's get clip here. This is from our friends at at k. Usa nine news in denver over the weekend were hospitalized. After an explosion and a fire at a distillery in estes park the valley fire protection. District says it happened this morning at elkins distillery north of. Us thirty four right by lake. Estes firefighters say. The explosion blew the garage door off. That building and neighbors felt that blast. They got the fire out fast. But you can see that. There's a lot of damage to the back of that building. Firefighters say the two people hurt are both employees at the distillery. They were both taken to burn center in greeley. We have yet to hear how severe their injuries are. Investigators are looking into what triggered that explosion and fire so obviously some Some connections to what we do here on talk as well. This was a scary moment when the news started. I break Since then i believe we have learned that no life threatening injuries. to those Those employees dr mona. I know that you've had somebody come through The unc brewing laboratory sciences. That also works up there. That's true and also a note joe elkins and and we wish him and the rest of his crew there speedy recovery. he makes great product. And it's just sad to see very very scary to see that You know this kind of thing has happened and hopefully everything's good well and just to clarify real quick that the the clip says it happened this morning. It actually happened over saturday morning. So that is an older clip. Great great point by had. It was saturday morning so this isn't just breaking today or anything like that. It's been say it was saturday. Morning did happen to hospitalize. Three injured So there was another person who was injured but did not have to go to the hospital. We were up at Hell that was two years ago. Were up at the The rocky mount crafts spirits festival in elkins was the presenting sponsor up there so they're huge in colorado they're huge in the spirits facility. And this is a danger that maybe gets overlooked. Sometimes that's right it does. I'm distilling is a little bit more dangerous because you're making spirits which are flammable and it can actually be overlooked. Just how much more safety protocols have to be involved in in making distilled spirits compared to making beer so there has been a gofundme setup up as well if you wanna to do a quick google search Put on their elkins distilling and distiller. You'll be able to find all of that as well so just some some craft spirits news here tonight an abbreviated version of brew. Talk coming your way right now. let's take a break when we come back. There's a little puree still hanging out. And i think it is a perfect blend of kettle sour and a fruit beer at the same time thoughts from you. It's a fantastic appear and this is one of yours is mine. I helped make new owner broken fantastic beer very the very strawberry. Love it by itself. This thing that i would do trump ice cream. A drop of ice cream in this would be amazing is. It's i would almost but tequila in it because it's very very fat kid drunk kid. It's very strawberry margarita. Yes read to me. But the fact that andrew kid. I guess here because i would. I mean now that you're saying that that is there's a margarita. Down at at the real that is. It's almost like a mango ryan. Just got the shivers back their thinking time. It's like a mango strawberry makes But it's frozen. Oh my goodness this is phenomenal. So this'll be the first beer that you brew that you get put on tap at a local brewery. That is your own correct. Well of course i mean. There's a lot of things that a lot. it's a lot of i. What's the name of this Well we're just calling it simply strawberries and cream sour just to kind of hint at the fact that is at bureau about. I don't understand well just a hint at the fact that it was soured with a little bit of milk products. So that if you happen to be lactose intolerant or something you know that Should probably not consume this one phenomenal. It's phenomenal it's It's tastes exactly. I think like strawberries and cream. Dep is very well done. Kudos to you. Thank you on this excited to get this on tap. It's a small quick. So i would say get it while you can get it. I'm going to arizona will be nice and tanned up and just to be transparent. We're doing colorado car bombs so we're using the left hand mixed rather than guinness in our car bombs so you excited about that right excited about. That actually sounds really good. I mean it can't be that different right. It's just touch different in a way. It's a little more chocolate milky chocolate like a traditional car-bomb love chuck mil But it's still. It's the same fantastic saint patrick's day regimen. Do you like it. Do you shed me. I'm not looking passion. Well as you while you're looking at right back do you. Like better Oh you see that. I don't know that i liked them. Better i think they're equally as as good I've been drinking guinness for very long time. So i you know. I the guinness as a as a warm spot in my heart but the you know there's a lot of people that left hand is very popular if you put that left hand milk stout against guinness. There's a lot of people that they'll go. Go for the left handed. And and we've done that many years for several years over saint patrick's day and left hand a big supporter of our saint patrick's day celebrations a lot of time. So you know shout out to them for supporting us and a supporting them. And i think I think it's a really close comparison so last year was last year. They gave every school in the state The weekend to decide when they were going to play either in the fall or here in the spring sixty of them decided to wait and practice for the spring season gets underway tomorrow and Again you have sixty teams split up over five divisions eight-man two three eighty four and five Eight-man has eight teams in the division. The others have between twelve and sixteen. So you're going to get the same type of schedule we saw in the fall. Tanner team will play. Six erupted six in the regular season. You'll have eight teams. I believe make the playoffs. And then they'll combine down in blow and crowned what five state champs for the spring coming up in those dates March eleventh through. The third may eleventh through the thirteenth i think is when we will play out the state tunnels down in pueblo but practice starts tomorrow games i believe on the eighteenth can get underway so We're going to strap it up a little bit. I mean it. It's so interesting that decision process that went into this and now we're going to have to state titles in the record books. I think that they should have called them. The the covert bowls and just gone that way. But the i think the feeling from a lot of people kevin is that the spring season was the quote unquote legitimate state champ. Because the field was so much deeper. I think you're going to get that already. When i posted a link to our story about practice starting tomorrow somebody says man. I hope they don't crown champs in the spring weather going to chaz always mentioned equity in in an balance and so if you it was the understanding if you decided to play in the spring you would have a chance to play for a state championship. So that's the case and we're gonna get some teams you know most of the four five and eight man teams are ones that have kind of been under the radar but you get into the three ranks. You've got the faith. Christians of the world can't denver is going to be in there. You've also got rifle basang. Glenwood springs and cole ridge and saliva from the western side so competitive wise. I think three is gonna be the most fun bracket to watch. It's also the biggest. They have sixteen teams in that division. So i i think you're gonna get some quality football they're everywhere else. You're kinda got teams that do not have a lot of playoff success in the recent past on their resume so this will give those kids a chance to maybe enjoy little playoff run and lift some hardware. Kevin schafer gonna perhaps network before. I let you go. There's a lot of counties around the state That have already made the same type of proclamation. There are to be free barbecues and a lot of areas of the state that rely heavily on the on the cattle industry. So I think that's going to be a big day a fun day to To make people know your opinion if you will. And what isn't good for that with social media anymore. But i know but The the grill will be fired up on march twentieth. Hey i like it. I i think that's what i think. That's a lot. A lot of people are saying. Kevin appreciate your time as always my friend. We'll talk next week and we'll be able to talk some some playoff basketball and some football which is just so weird to say. Yeah we'll have brackets out by then and we'll actually have first round games a night before so we'll have plenty to talk about a week from today. Kevin appreciate your time have a good one. That's schaffer perhaps network And by the way last week he did think ryan was a telemarketer. I do not believe the same mistake was made today. Ten fifty two. Let's take a break. "I have tanner swint our poll question on our facebook page. Meet in or meet out. You gotta pick one. Apparently you you gotta let us know what. You're eating a couple of weeks comment on our facebook page or text into the to talk text line at nine seven zero four seven eight one. Three zero one very excited. Happy to bring back. Shawn chambers stricter water and sewer to talk about this The terry ranch aquifer project a big win for the city of greeley last night as the city council unanimously approves the tyrian shock for project. So welcome in and and congratulations. I suppose yeah. Thanks for having me. I'll tell you it's an important milestone in long range planning and making sure that we have a secure and resilient future for this community. We surprised by the unanimous vote. Did you kind of have an idea going in. Or what was that like you know. We had worked to make sure that both the public and the council were all well informed. We've been working on this project for more than a year. Right on had a number of important touch points with the council Some of those coming before we signed up to the agreement before we started the really intensive due diligence So so we were working very hard to keep them well informed and And he never know exactly how votes going to come out but We did all the things that we could do to to make sure good. Transparent information was available. Yeah and i. I was actually bragging on on the city of greeley Earlier in my in my broadcast here my show talking about the dissemination of information. Yeah i mean you guys were on it. I mean your messaging was clear and concise. And i think that really helped things we at the actual vote last night. So did you hear any of the public forum side of things. What was that like. Yes so unfortunately. Due to covid right we're unique so everything was virtual so we were all present. Virtually speaking and there was a lot of public comment and testimony from diverse group of individuals and organizations some foreign some against but a lot Heavy hitters from a diverse group of course diverse set of stakeholders weighed in support of the project. And and that was fantastic to hear so some really important community groups such as the putu learning center downtown development authority. The greeley chamber jamie hitting was there for sure all spoke up with over wyoming support for the project. Well and like you said. I mean when we sat down and and adam joker ston yourself and i. We all sat down and had this conversation. I mean to me. It made sense from the beginning. I you follow along and and understand that diversity in water is so important and the way that you guys are setting the example and gonna lead with his terrier talk for project. I'm excited but the question is what's next. Yes oh remember. This is a project that has an opportunity to be phased in over the long term. We don't need this project tomorrow to be able to meet our future need tomorrow or next year. Even it offers us some unique resiliency attributes in that it provides diversity and supply that is not impacted by wildfire or drought. We're excited to get to the preliminary phase one level where we can bring this water online. But that's going to take a number of years you know. So what truly comes next are taking the next steps get to the closing table with the seller. Making sure we have everything in order. They're preparing to transfer the lease with the state. Land board to greeley's hands making sure that we're being effective public communicators. Even though we've gotten past the council vote we still have a lot of strong logic to make sure that the conversation is fact based out in the so the fact based conversation. What's that what's what's that all about. Well so we're reliant on science and a tremendous amount of due diligence that's been done scientifically by industry leading experts and so we're going to continue to break that up and try and get away from being so technical and share that information more broadly with the general public as we worked then Develop more engineering around the project in terms of like how does the infrastructure get laid out. What are the pipeline routes. Look like what is right away acquisition. An eastman's looked like and start talking to landowners. So so those are some Previews of what the next steps might look like. We're talking on shawn chambers here. With the city of greeley did it did feel like a sira sigh of relief did. Did it feel like a little bit of a weight off of your shoulders when that vote did come through or was it like maybe for a brief second enjoy whiskey and then you say we gotta get back at it in the project team has worked tirelessly and and the water and sewer board has been deeply invested an and so as the council and so You know what happened. Formerly last night is a major milestone in. it's one worth celebrating But it's also a milestone and there are many more milestones to bring this project to fold design and to fruition and so We know we have a lot of work ahead of us and and we're gonna do everything that's necessary to deliver a safe reliable project of the citizens and so we've got we've got marching orders but yeah it was great to get That milestone behind us. I talk with ryan when we talked to some of our sports guests about coaches speak onto the next one and got to play one game at a time. He just gave me some coaches. Speak there. sean. You're i like that. You could be the coach you know. We gotta take one at a time. Do the little things executed but but with a project this big. You're absolutely right. I mean it. It is those steps in. It's a long haul. I mean it's marathon. It's not spread. That's right this is a marathon. And that's one of the real fundamental advantages to this project is the ability to phase it and that means planning for a an adaptive management approach to building it over time to managing those costs. So that they don't impact impair our ability to to serve our residents affordable water. And so we're going to be taking a very proactive planned. Approach to designing and constructing this info infrastructure over a long period of time. We're talking again with shawn chambers with the city of greeley Joining us here. Talking about the terry ranch aquifer project. This was one that i wanna say hotly contested but it was definitely debated and controversial to some our producer on his way back to the station. Yesterday got got a pamphlet thrown into was thrown in. Yeah through into his car. hit his window down. it was thrown in there And it was saying. Stop the terror and geographer project. What would your message be to the people who so strongly oppose this project that they were even out in front of city hall yesterday before. This vote happened. Yeah you know. i'll say that. We've embraced their their dialogue and the criticism that they placed on project and over the last nine months that that dialogue has made the project diligent stronger. It's given us an opportunity to dig deeper to be more confident. In our ability to develop the project to develop it safely and reliably so the this public discourse that happens in a democracy has made the public's project better ultimately and encourage them to stay informed and involved. The project webpage will continue to be updated. Our communication will continue to be out there We wanna make sure that we deliver a project that is reliable and meets. The citizens needs for future water supply. We'll between the the The number of interviews. I mean this is the second ever you here on my show. I believe you're on with mornings with gail as well The tribune articles. I mean you guys are getting out there. And i think that's a big part of it as well When did it come apparent to you in this process that you said okay. We're going to need to get in front of some of this. We need to get this conversation started. And we're going to have to control where it goes so that these misconceptions don't.

I guess that's the elephant in the real sticky gonna run again the gop trump's party well. The gop needs to be trump's party. I don't What i mean by that is we need to make sure that as a group of conservative republicans That that we we stay together because you can't win. Action by subtraction. We need more people to vote for our candidates not less You know whether that's trump or whether it's somebody else i personally don't think he will run again. That's just a hunch. I do think and i hope he does stay involved in the process and encourage all those mega supporters that he was good at attracting and evidence being cpac where i was last week Evidence being what we saw there. I think we we as a party ought to be celebrated is all the good that was accomplished in those just four years with organized and bitter resist move from the the democrat left. He's still got all that done. People liked his policies. they've flourished under his policies. Those are republican conservative policies But what they found a little bit troubling sometimes was the personality right. So we need to differentiate as you so articulately say between the culture personality and the culture of conservative policy. It's pretty widely used in arizona california and it's a provides a little better system than than we have right now although what we have is good with our mountain streams this is going to be a great system to augment that so certainly not a new concept. That's good to hear now. There were two members of Greeley water and sewer and correct me. If i'm not a naming that particular entity that the right way but to firmer employees That had concerns about the water quality. The top of mind. It seems just off the top of my head Concerns about uranium in the water. Did adam address that as well. Yeah that's been addressed pretty substantially over a long period of time. You know what what came out. Initially was that There had been some of your any of detected which as we know now is not unusual and water supply and found rather quickly through A number of tests that the small amount of uranium could be filtered out Real easily the fact is that signed. Scientists and engineers told us that the water was to drink right now even without Century in that out but of course we are going to filter that out to our filtering plant and the water that That folks no is really great national award a couple of years ago. will not the decline at all in quality. That's the promise that will make moving forward. That's right because we've got award winning water right here in greeley. We don't want to sully that reputation right mayor and we won't. We'll continue to have award winning water there now. There were also some concerns about Miss missile silo Some runoff i believe from a missile silo Pollutants from a nearby missile site in wyoming. But those concerns were found to be Rather unfounded We looked at that just like we looked at every other issue that came up and and that particular factor was pretty good about. So where does it go from here. So we're we're This is not going to benefit any of us right now. This is really geared to the future. So we'll we'll start working on the whole project but Folks need to know that our water will come from our mountain reservoir for substantial time to come we. We're in the shape that we are now primarily because pioneers deputy far we had his son on that this zoom last night it was pretty interesting but he set us up for where we are now and what this city council and water board is really doing is setting greeley up for the future so this is.
