"And ray, we'd like to raise a glass of the fine chronicles series. Brought to you by Canadian club to mark on ray flurry for joining us today. 45 year old is out. It is available now looking forward to getting our little mitts on that 45 year old series to wrap it up. You know, Mark Andre flurry has been around the National Hockey League as we know for a long, long time. Of course he's serious. This guy is a fierce competitor as evidenced by hall of Famer resume. I think that's fair to say. You know, you can't help but smile when you're having the conversation with flour because, you know, he just takes you into places where he's just a good guy and a fun guy to be around. Man, he'll play as long as he wants to play. You know, just think of as he gets older. Like I watched him sorry, I'm gonna back up. I watched him on Tuesday in LA. He was phenomenal. Like the game So he gets beat in the third period, but he was amazing. I'm like, oh, he's not the wheels aren't off here. Like this is there's lots of great hockey left for Mark Andre fleury. And there's a time when maybe a terrific team says, hey, do you play 30 games for us? And the answer would be, he's going to be capable of doing that. But as you just mentioned, just as we were getting set here, made it pretty clear about the priority of hockey to family. And he, I don't know, he's just he's got a light about him. He's every teammate that plays with him talks about him in the same way and he's been he's been just a terrific player. Yeah, it's a bit of a throwback too though, right? Like in the fact that I mean, again, he's beaming when you guys are joking and talking about the pranks that he loves to play. But then you've got that fierce competitor where, you know, he softened it a little bit. The battles that he's had with Brendan Gallagher this season and historically and he's like, well, yeah, but you know, we're still friends. That's a bit of a throwback where you played hard against each other, but when the game was over, the game was over for the most part. Yeah, it felt like there was more in season crossover, like you'd run into teams after games and stuff because you always stayed over in that city. Right. You know, like nobody not many teams were chartering back in the day. So you stayed over and you go to a restaurant and pretty much everybody was there. And so in constantly see guys that had just finished punching each other in the nose and they'd be having a conversation. And it wasn't heated at all.

"So it's definitely more to take in consideration and not that I've been selfish, but I feel like I've fulfilled my dream for so long and I'm very lucky for that. So I don't want to be selfish moving forward either. Now, last year, you come to Minnesota and you're with cam Talbot as your goalie partner. And cap reasons are, you know, they move him to Ottawa and you get Philip Gustafson back as a partner. So now you're much older than your goalie partner again. There's a lot of talk about how many games can you play, how much is comfortable? What is it like a to be to have a goalie partner? Because you guys are your own little team there. We all like you guys. You are your own little team. And how much is good for you to play? Like, is it a couple of games a week? Is it like, how do you, how do you come to that? Yeah. I don't know, it's a tough question. I don't think I can set number in first season or week week. I think it depends on the schedule and the travel, how much you move it around. Oh, it's gone, right? I think you still want to be still on the good and stuff. So, but I think we go when we get a time pretty much what we've got to add. I'm still feel good. Still feel healthy, right? Yeah. I don't know, I'm not too worried about the number. Whenever I coach tells me to go play it. Now last night, you got to watch, well, today's, I don't even know what today. Today's Thursday. Wednesday. You watched Philip Gustafson play, played play great. Yeah. What do you do when you are not playing? Like you're watching Gustafson in the game, like first of all, you guys go almost two periods again without scoring and you're like, holy, somebody shoot it the next, right? How stressful is it to you just to watch? Is it worse than playing? Oh, it's this, oh yeah, a little bit because I feel when you play you just, you know, you're in the game and it started to stop the next box. You always busy, right? That's so easy. When you were just watching, I feel like you're more on edge of it. Every little place like, oh, you know, I got a lot more emotional. But again, it was fun watching him like you said he had an awesome game kept us in all night and it was fun. Fun to see boys celebrate after the first goal in the next few months, right? So it's good to be on the bench with them cheering for those goals. Now you've played with Hall of Fame players, guys that are going to the Hall of Fame and, you know, and now you're with another special guy in karel Capri's off. What does he look like?

"Obviously it's a very skill and nice call. You've been in the league now, you know, almost 20 years. Has it been as noticeable the way guys shoot the park was it quickly noticeable to you? How much better they shoot it or how differently they shoot it or a player like zebras, like did you notice right away and you're like, oh man, this is getting different. Yeah, I think the one piece stick was a big big game changer and then they kept getting better of it and better flex and I feel like before maybe like the third floor line. Nothing against them, right? They were like great players also, but I feel like with the wood stick and it was more grinding, maybe a little more few more fighters, right? Dump and chase hitting guys. Some guys had great shots, right? Like heavy and hard, but nowadays, everybody shoots, you know, the D coming in, everybody's got a great restaurant, a front line guys, they can snap the bucket on borrowing in and yeah, I think there's definitely a difference. Near the end of my career, I remember one of the goalies saying, yeah, the worst part about the one piece stick is now the guys that can't score, they shoot it so hard and they hit you in the chest and it hurts. A few more bruises, I guess. So Mark, you've been played for for so long. I'm really curious like as your career has gone on like, how do you evolve?

"All right, everyone raised. We jump into headlines. Talking about the goal that didn't count. Speaking of mark on referring the Minnesota wild now, it wasn't flurry in that. It was Philip Gustafson and that from the Minnesota wild. But Trevor ziegler scores the lacrosse school. And it's called back on a rightful challenge, right? I mean, dean Evans didn't allow. Their video guy obviously identified that the play was offside. But you and I have talked about this in the past, right? I haven't clocked it. I'm going to get the clocking on it because I'm going to talk about it on TSN. In episode 13 on Tuesday, you know, we talked about how good it is for the National Hockey League to have the celebrity of Ryan Reynolds interested at least in part purchasing the Ottawa senators. If I'm a fringe hockey fan, I'm drawn to what I just saw from Trevor's eagles, right? I mean, this kid is just loaded with personality. He's not afraid to try anything out there. And then if I'm a fringe fan, I'm like, well, it doesn't count. And I get an offside is offside the rule is the rule. But you and I have talked about this before. I need to find out what the time disparity was between the puck entering the zone offside. And then the ziggurat school. It was probably pretty close. But it feels like there's a tweak that needs to happen here. Would you agree? And here's another NHL exec through this and me this morning. And I want your opinion on this. If the defending team concedes the blue line. So the defense are either not there, not challenging, right? And the offensive player is able to the players are able to gain the zone without any sort of pushback. You can see your right to challenge. Hang on, tell your executive. Terrible idea. Terrible idea. Why is that? What? So when you come when you come to your house, okay? Assuming you're not parked in the garage, but you know, you come up to the front door. Do you want 6 laps around the house before you walk in? No, you walk straight in, right? That's easy to tell. Can you imagine in that scenario?

"I'm sure you're the first person that is I know. Number four on our list. I listen to I listen to Carlos Santana a lot this year for some reason. The number four team on our list of Minnesota wild have played two games so far. Now they've been against two teams that we had high on this list and the kings and the rangers. They've been great games. There's been 23 combined goals. Two games. Did you hear did you hear zuccarello last night? Yeah. Said that they were checking like a bleeping junior team. I love it. Oh, that's love to hear it, folks. Okay, so the wild last year were 5th and scoring at overall third to 5 one 5. So I think they've already kind of established themselves as we just talked about the blues and how they've sort of changed that narrative of what they used to be thought of and what they are now. We're talking about watchable teams in the Minnesota wilder. The Minnesota wild and clues are both incredible. I struggle between which one I want to have higher because then they're both top 5 for me. No one in hockey has better chemistry than Carol capris oven matsuko. Yeah. It's super fun. I think they could play blindfolded and still complete 85% of their passes. There's a couple of combinations on the teams ahead of us. But there's one, just in terms of the way they play off of each other though, like without being capris of especially as otherworldly skills, of course. But they get the most out of themselves because of that combination as opposed to being like two of the best players in the world who are just put together and are good because they're already great. Ryan Hartman, all of a sudden, top offensive center, Frederick goodrow somehow. Frederick's super fun to watch too. That's just become just from having good skilled wingers. You can just have a center blow up for something. I didn't think that was possible. We can't talk Minnesota wild and watch ability without bringing up the name Matt Baldi. Yes. Like super fun. And I want to give a shout to Jonas brodin for just being outrageously annoyingly, always positionally sound. He is, he's got to be with he's got to be the smartest defensive defenseman. I'm not saying he's the best. I'm saying he's got to be the smartest defensive defenseman. He's 2003 Minnesota wild for me. Yeah. Fair enough. I understand that. But I still, there's something about watching him play that I can't help but admire and then they've added Marc Andre fleury. And Marc Andre fleury has been watchable for the wrong reasons in the first two games, but when he's on, he's also watchable for the right reasons. And the end of warmups when Marc Andre fleury is backing up, he's the only goalie I've ever seen do this. He removes the net and helps the ice crew, put it aside. He like helps remove the net and gives it to the ice crew. It's the only guy I've ever seen do that and I just find it immensely charming. I'll never get over it. What a nice guy. Yeah, it's beautiful. He really is a Jesuit genuine answer. It's the best. Number three, the Edmonton Oilers who I have to say. I had the number one on my list. Tom, your 8 ranking of them.

"Yeah, again, I mean, it's a completely different team. And it's been rare that the bruins have not had those two not on the ice together. It's been a long time. I can't even remember the last time that they were out for an extended stretch of time. And you're seeing, again, bergeron retires, you got so limited down the middle. And you know, again, Martian is not retiring anytime soon he's not pulling an Aaron Donald, which the Aaron Donald stuff was interesting. I had not heard about the retirement stuff. Before the game and then Rodney Harrison just kind of dropped it in the free game. Yeah, no big deal. And then it was talked about a little before the game I like Michelle to fly on the sideline and it's like, was this like do people talk about this before? Did it just like spawn? And now he's like potentially retiring. So none of that with Martian that we know of. So he'll be around for quite a bit. But again, it kind of hits at this like, you need both. And I don't think that, you know, let's say bergeron does retire after the season. What do you have with marchand? Like Marsha has a great play driver, same with pasta or not, but you need that legit number one center and you don't have it. You do not have it. Outside of bergeron. So it comes down to again, that's why this deadline could be one of the most important that the bruins have had in years, which we say every year, but I really mean it this year. This could have a lot longer to 2023. It would be the same thing, but honestly, considering what the window is. Yeah, every year going forward for any more important in terms of charting out the future because we've said it before. I don't think this team is going to sell or are they going to completely blow things up. And again, I think you look at the state of this team. Can you really blow things up completely anyway? There's people who talk about they should just trade everyone and all of a sudden get into the sweepstakes for the dad sweepstakes. No, I think the floor of this team is also too high that even if you like bergeron retires and you try to sell off tradable assets like the brush, Craig Smith, all these other guys, they're still not at that tier where you're hovering with Montreal and Arizona. We are going to have a viable chance. Maybe you get the.

"This. This February 15th and this is the bruins beat on CLS media. Welcome to the bruins beat on CLS media, my name is Evan Marino. He hope you guys have any great day, a great week. Hopefully had a great Super Bowl weekend, did something cool for it? Maybe we're there. Or as people Blackburn said on Twitter who wouldn't want to just sit on the couch and stuff their face. What's the fun and being there when you can just sit at home on the couch with a big bag of chips and some beer or maybe you're having soda or whatever it is and just eating away, drinking away. Personally, I just chilled. Just chilled, ordered our chicken sandwich from a local restaurant. It was delicious. Watch the game, even get you hungry right now. But it was a good game, Connor and I got into it to start. Just a little bit. But in this episode, we talked for a while about these Mark Andre flurry rumors at the Bruce might be a dark horse than him and we kind of discussed the pros and cons to someone like flirt. We also got into life without bergeron and Martian as the burns are going through right now. And what it kind of exposes in this bruins lineup. And we also got into the potential of this Frederick Coyle Smith line working. What happens if that's a good line? Does that become the third line? Who slots in up top? So a lot of interesting moving parts with that. We also get into Jack studnica. And what his value is saying with Jacob bruss, what their value is in trades and where they might fit in the lineup. Going forward. So fun episode, as always, remember to go support our friends over at bed online with our promo code CLS 50. Without further ado, here's my conversation. With Conor Ryan. And we're here with Conor Ryan. Connor, what is up? Evan, doing well. How are you doing? Doing great. Doing great. This is too straight weeks of you back on bruins beat. It's like we're getting back in the rhythm of you coming out. Slowly getting you back in the loop on this. But how was your weekend? It was swell. Watch Super Bowl went with, I thought, I hope the Bengals were gonna win, but alas. It was more realistic. I was like, you know what Aaron Donald is going to absolutely obliterate Cincinnati's offensive line? Sure enough it happened. Adds terrible, as always, which like, I feel like it's very much an old old man grape to be like the Super Bowl ads are bad. It's like realistic now. Everyone's got like Twitter and YouTube. People are getting more creative. You don't have to wait for the big game for you to drop like a good ad anymore. So I got 9 understand that comes with a territory, but it was good. No complaints as of when the time this podcast drops. Hopefully be you will be being part champions. We will scrub this audio from the podcast. So fingers crossed there. But how are you doing? How was your weekend Evan? It was great. I actually had to do a bean pot preview video for the championship for the NCAA, and I predicted be you to win. Hurt me to do it. Hurt me to do it, but I did. I had to make a business decision and I did it. It was a good weekend. Fun times, Super Bowl was great. You're right, the ads were terrible. The only ad that I actually remember was the crypto dot com ad with the barcode that went on the screen..

"Like that so that's the obvious one like you're going to take the pr hit that. They know that was coming with a move. Like trading flurry. You don't do it without feeling pretty good that you've got something coming back that's going to keep you as stanley cup contender. And you're you know improve your chances and so whether that's a different center whether that's a different player whether that's jack eichel whether it's you know we've heard a name like ryan strom connected to. They're obviously not done. They're obviously going to do something. The obviously you know are going to use that cap space to probably strengthen themselves down the middle. Now that's all despite killing crimmins contention that the outside view that they need to improve the center position is probably stronger than their internal view that they need to do that. They feel pretty good about channel. Stevenson william carlson. Noam patrick brett. How nicholas wind you know. Probably something the other folks that they have in their system by again. You don't make a move. Like trading mark andrzej flurry. There's too much smoke for there not to be some fire now for them to be linked to somebody big a big cap hit and you know most likely somebody that can put the puck on the net and get them over the hump in the in the playoffs man. Pot matric So that's mile time of favorite. Marc andre fleury story and obviously for a lottery awesome. I think the. I think he'll be missed because i'm sure Me and my friends are not the only ones that have a flurry story. Like that So now gotta spend forward a little bit and just discuss. You know where all parties are gonna go from here. And we'll start with marc andre. Fleury himself he's joining a chicago team. Already made one splash move. This offseason by trading for defenseman steph jones from columbus and. It appears really trying to go forward here with kind of jonathan. Toews patrick kane. A starting to creep hordes the end of their deals now. There is some question of whether for you're gonna show up in play on his asian. Walsh said flurry quote will be taking time to discuss situation with his family in seriously evaluated hockey future at this time. May the mention today. Flurry wanted to stay in las vegas. That was his number one preference. Now maybe this is some sort of leverage ploy by By flurry to you know. Try to get moved to somewhere somewhere. He really wants to be many. Think people have brought up that maybe flirted with blindsided by this move. bud shirt tried to paint a picture today. That flurry was well aware. That this at least could be a possibility dean. What do you think. Mark andrea Future where he's gonna end up going from here while i mean obviously chicago as you pointed out. It's a halfway decent team and it's a pretty good city. You know no offense. I'm going to mention like a couple here. But you know it's not ottawa. It's not off low or something like you didn't get exiled. He's he's playing for a team if he decides to play that like. You said me. Big move for seth jones might get. This probably expected to get johnson taste back from his medical condition. You know stand. Bowman is making moves there to improving. Give them one last chance with canaan entails like you said you know to to to see if they can try to win one. If you're marc andre. Fleury you've got one year and you wanna take one shot at it. It's not a bad place to play in a dozen. Sound like he can maneuver his way. Too like pittsburgh or something like that which seems you know. Maybe like another logical landing spot. If you were going to go somewhere. I think some of this is maybe once the sting in a wears off. You know the the you know. He'll the wanna play. I just keep coming back to how much fun he seemed to have this year that he didn't didn't look thirty six. You know he didn't. He didn't look like somebody who was coming up on retirement in coming up on the last year of his contract in being asked questions. About how long do you wanna play. He looks like he's still had gas. Tank looked energized. this year refreshed. He bounced back so well. Obviously winning the vezina trophy so to say he's like what do like an aaron rodgers thing here like i'm gonna retire. I'm just gonna walk away or i don't know that i entirely see that you know. I don't think he needs the money. And if he feels like he's at a point where families more important and he can walk away from seven dollars on the table and has losses love. you know. Obviously you know everything that happened with. His dad passed away and the effect that it had on him. I mean who can boyne geez. you know. i'm somebody who's mom passed away when when he was a kid. I you know can only. I can only imagine what it's like to go through your life. You know your father by your side and your whole It obviously had an effect on him. And so you know who knows if that factors into by at least just looking back last year. It felt like he still have love for the game. I remember him saying as long as he still had fun. As long as you still enjoy coming to the ring you know he still wanted to play. He said that numerous times kind of you know during the season he hit you know a bunch of milestones climbing to third on the all time wins list heap mentioned again after winning the vezina. Trophy is kind of you. Know post awards. Show zoom met. He did and so you know because he seemed to be having a lot of fun last year end was at. I mean literally the top of his game. I mean he had the best. Save percentage in the best goals against average career last year. I mean as you said. It's tough to see him walking away from that. But you know maybe he decides on the back said that teaches wouldn't have the same level of fund getting to know a new city a new locker room a new team and all that we'll we'll have to see now for the nights this puts them in a very Situation before agency opens on it opens at nine am wednesday as i mentioned off the top. We're recording this very late on tuesday afternoon so by the time. A lot of you guys are listening to this. Range seem ardy had started in. The nights might have already made a bunch of moves but will recap those at a later date for now. Focus quick on flurry in its impact once the nightside out martinez to a three year extension. Which are we obviously. Expect to become official. That will become official likely tomorrow. Based on what recurrent said today They're going to have approximately five point. Eight four million dollars in cap space before resigning a restricted free agent nolan patrick Thirteen forward seven defensemen one goalie under contract on a one way deals which means they get paid the same weather there in the nhl or hr once martinez patrick sign on mccrum. And did say the team was gonna go shopping or backup goaltender to shoulder the load with liner via free agency a trade. They're not just gonna hand that job to age l. goalie of the year logan thompson. Obviously they're gonna be. The cycle is offensive options available in the flat cap world that the nights can pursue because everyone's budgets are being squeezed a little bit tighter so just real quick for a wrap up here dave. How do you think the sets up the rest of their off-season starting tomorrow. I don't think you move like trading markazi flurry to clear all that. Cast without something big in mind Heartlessly the name that the on the tip of everybody's as jack eichel. He's got a ten million dollar cap. It and if you go on social media and you follow all the insiders you know everything that the links seem to be stronger and stronger. Having have a chance to make many phone calls myself on that matter but you know there's even some alleged proposed deals out there and and.

"This city in this franchise on the hockey map because of who he is and the way that he plays. Yeah before turn the page. A little bit i mean. Do you have a personal favorite. Marc andre fleury moments or interaction Four years of covering him. Ha ha new idea. But it's not safe for work. So i'm gonna try to tell the story but i have to admit it so the very first year after they swept the kings in the playoffs. There was you know a few days of off time off days. There only a couple of us that were standing around mark grungy flurries locker and we were asking him questions and you know one of the things. I was trying to ask him about and learn about really. Was you know the difference between a regular goalie and a playoff goal and and guys who can kind of flip the switch and turn it on and you know at the time i think i didn't quite fully grass the difficulty that he had times in pittsburgh with sort of the playoff flurry in the criticism that he got there. He you know everything about marc. Andre fleury is so positive. And i asked about that night push them a little bit and he basically in so many words told me to get the bleep out of here and i did and i walked away and then he kinda shot another whatever at me about. You know. it wasn't good enough for you. You know holding the the kings. I think it was two four goals or something like that. In the in the four hundred remember seven goals whatever it was in that series that swept them in the and i just was stunned. Denied just stopped and was just kind of like i come so you know yes. Yeah yeah yeah but he came out in you saw like a completely different side sort of the side. You know we see a little bit. I'll let the saudi oil. You know our contract flurries got very foul mouth. And i love it like. He'll catch himself when he causes. It will apologize. But he's was mad at me and he was really. You know use legitimately angry and probably had a right to be. And i walked out a locker room that day and i felt really bad and i was kinda checking myself a little bit as a reporter in you know how i asked questions in how i approach subject and i was walking out of city. National arena and marc andre. Fleury happening me doing some photo stuff in a different area. And he walked right past me and stock me me right. In the eye of david i apologize. We talked for two minutes. And i apologized to him and told him i push them too hard on that. You know that that subject. And i understand than will always felt like we had a cool relationship and going forward. Maybe that had something to do with it now. Always love hearing him. Slip up in us and john f-bomb bomb or something like that in the locker room and get all sheepish. Shido feel bad about it by that. Just yeah that one story especially. I don't know why it always stuck with me. Just you know maybe it was kind of my welcome the nhl or something like that. But just to see kind of a different side of marc andre. Fleury you know a little of that competitive side in you know little of that. Will that that foul mouth has certainly as we do this podcast than i do. Radio stuff i have a bad now. I have to catch myself all the time. So i can certainly appreciate that about mark andre flooring that's just one rambling long story that i'll actually never forget. Yeah no yeah. That stirs perfect. I own a quick yet. Tell coupled for von here one. When you're i was trying to wrack my brain because you pops another story into my head. And i was at a road game once. I think he was one of the nearby ones. La or san jose anaheim. I wish i could remember. I don't And you know there's a couple reporters that were just talking to flurry after we wrapped up like his post availability whatever Someone had mentioned like. Hey weren't there like a lot of nights fan. Wasn't that cool influence that. Oh yeah. yeah and then. He asked the reporters that were there like. Hey please videotaped me like saying. Hey thanks for all your support fans. He wanted to get it out there. Any like stopped reported. Like k- know. Turn your cameras back on to make sure that i get this out there. Which is crazy by all time favourite. Marc andre fleury story is at one time i was in summerlin at a friend's birthday brunch and of course you know we were being very over the top You know obnoxious table. I think by friend had some silly hat on to indicate that it was his birthday. And we'd sung happy birthday for him so we just took everyone's attention in this nights brunch and right before we did that you know. I just notice out of the corner of my eye. Marc andre fleury and his family kind of you know just walked in sat down at a table and obviously had to be you know forced to listen to all of our lovely singing voices and i don't think he actually notice me or sauve that i was there but a little bit later after finishing happy birthday all of a sudden our waitress brings some drake's over to the table in mentioned like hey like these drinks have been purchased by someone the restaurant happy birthday and obviously we're perplexed like kind of confused like who would have done this and we can oppress the way channel bitch like book like whoever you know bought. These doesn't wanna say doesn't want it known that like goes in does this or whatever and so obviously is pretty easy connected dots Mark under clery bought my friend birthday drinks just because he happened to walk into the restaurant. We are at and saw that it was his birthday and decided to do like a super nice thing for him despite not knowing him at all or whatever. That's just what marc andre fleury..

"Gauge the anger in in some of the things as far as you know the fan reaction where they're at. Yeah i mean. I don't think people are pleased. I think you know it's i. Hesitate to use this phrase. It's the one that comes to mind. I should really compare it. But it's you know it's like the day that that lives in infamy. I mean as much as all the positives from the last four years and the you know the good vibes in the build up in that first season in going to the stanley cup. You know this date in trading. Marc andre flooring the decision that they made in the direction that franchise franchises headed as a result of that. I i mean it's all going to come back to this date and this trade and this decision yeah definitely an inflection points. Let's quick before we even get more into why the night say that. This happened and kind of how it went down. Let's zoom out a little bit to get more of the full picture Flurry obviously as everyone listening to. This knows that there are nights. Fan came over from pittsburgh in the expansion draft. You know immediately becomes the nights. Most recognizable player was a star player in pittsburgh won three cups there one as their primary starter so immediately gives the night someone fans can latch onto a despite some injuries has tremendous first season takes the stanley cup final. There is a clock twist in year. Three on the team traits for robin leonard. The deadline and later makes him their primary starter during the playoffs. Which of course leads to the infamous sword in flurries back on twitter from his agent. Alan walsh obviously admonishing nights coach. Peter bore for his decision to start winter nights after all that still decide to bring both guys back after losing to dallas in the semifinals. They resign linter to a five year. Twenty five million dollar contract in the mention day obviously explored trading. Marc andre fleury but ultimately don't poetry. You're on a deal. They keep both guys. They allocate twelve million dollars to their goals. Which is the second highest cap hit in the league but they create this superstar tandem that lives up to its billing really Last season both goalies play really well when they're in the net together. They win the The jennings trophy for the fewest goals allowed in nfl season. Flurry wins the trophy. As the nhl's best goaltender he had never even been a finalist before But now ultimately after that season the knights decide to break the two of them up us so day. We obviously heard from Today why did the nights feel that. This partnership had to end why. I think it's a little bit of twofold but the majority of it from talking Kelly mckerman and then you know bill fully also gave me a few minutes. I was able to get his reaction to the deal and ask him a few questions as well It became clear that they felt like they needed salary. Cap space in the best way to go about doing that now. You know for any future deals or whatever they're going to do train wise free agency or anything going forward. The best way for them to free that money up was the trademark. Andre fleury he has seven million dollar cap it with one year remaining in to bill fully. They didn't feel like they would have the cap space going forward to sign. Marc andre fleury tune extension. I guess you know. He publicly said If he would be willing to take a hometown discount at least kind of had been put out there through his agent that that was the case. But you know the other thing with all of this. Is that those back to the trade for robin lender and then the commitment that they made they re sign him to a five year. Twenty five million dollar contract extension kalama and kind of alluded to this today in his in his media. Availability you know when the nights draft and marc andre in the expansion draft. They knew they would get good goaltending early on but all along behind closed doors they had had conversations in ebbing talking all along about. Who's going to be the next goal. Who's going to take over. You know from. Marc andre fleury. Who's the future. And once they acquired robin linter and signed him to that contract extension in the prime of his career. They made that commitment and they basically said that he was their goaltender the future and right now after allocating twelve million nestle something else. That ability pointed out a just maneuvered in jump through hoops and all kinds of salary cap gymnastics and they just felt like especially in an eighty two game season that they couldn't go through that again. It exhausted then going into the postseason and bill fully in particular felt like it costs them against montreal that they just ran out of gas that the effect of having a play at times. You know fifteen skaters or seventeen years. You know time. After time especially down the stretch ended up costing them they weren't going to go through that salary cap out again this season. And so you know of all the decisions that they could make in. There will probably be some more coming up here. The one that cleared the most tax base. That made the most sense that you know. Put them in the position that they wanted to be in was the trademark andre fleury. Yeah so it's interesting because you mentioned earlier that there was some rumblings around robin leonard as well but still has four years remaining on his deal with that. Five million dollars av Has one year left at a seven million dollars if one of them was going to go debut when the flurry was the vezina trophy winner just from the calculated asset management standpoint. It always make sense. That.

"I guess that At this point More importantly than anything. I've said so far. I'd like to thank mark on briefly for his time in vegas it's Incredible the moments that We shared with him as part of our organization. He was the most Audra player i've ever seen in sports. He was the face of the franchise when you think back to how it all began the story book for season the You know the You'll the passion that he has for the game as As both a team made a wireless connected to the fan base. I wanna recognize His great accomplishments. Thank him for his time For his time here he's out in a tremendous impact on our organization. He's a tremendous impact on our cities. What is a pocket fans. This is the golden edge. Podcast the podcast. Where the las vegas review journal talks about hockey and some special players who play it because obviously this is going to be an episode. Devoted basically entirely to one marc andre. Fleury i am ben goats. Your gold nights beat writers for the las vegas reviews on joining me on the other. Line is my colleague. Dave shane. Dave how is this. Lovely july tuesday treating you while i was hoping to get this week. You know maybe a little quiet then slink off to my vacation and you know just kinda see what happens from there but not with this team now kelly criminal george mcphee in charge no way so as always gotta be something for us. Gone on exactly. They are a lot of things but never boring in that includes on. Today's massive news of they have traded. Marc andre fleury to the chicago blackhawks. There is so much to dissect with this kind of bombshell of news out of the drop dinner laps. This guy tuesday morning. We're obviously going over the implications of for the nights why they decided to do what how they ended up doing it. And what it means for the future were based gonna spend this entire episode going over that we will probably be back with you guys later this week recapping what. The nights did in a free agency but we felt the marc. Andre fleury was obviously based in his outside impact on the organization and the city of las vegas worth than episode basically unto himself. So before we dive in. I want to remind you guys that the podcast is sponsored by one hour heating and air conditioning. But we are also presented by blue wire hustle. Also you guys get Subscribe whatever you buy gas due to this one. The really really be appreciated helps people find us a and of course if you guys could check out all are written work at review journal dot com that would be much appreciated or even the print section because no spoilers but i think tomorrow's print section of the review journal is going to be a doozy and one that you guys are going to want to hold onto it so many people covering so many different angles of this story. All be there in one neat little paper sized package really recommend you guys. Pick that up hull right. So as i mentioned off the top of this morning news broke that. Marc andre fleury. The face of the knights franchise the vezina trophy winner. And of course a almost certain hall of famer was traded to chicago. The return was a minor league forward. Mikhail hacker rain and who is actually going to remain in chicago organization Nightstands fans remember a similar kind of arrangement happened when a defenseman knicks de simone was technically traded to the nights in the mataya danmark deal at the deadline but actually stayed with the sharks organization. It's basically similar up so essentially. The nights treated the best player in team history. So far and his seven million dollar cap hit this coming season for essentially no return Before we get into the bus particulars and boy are regan. Get into some particulars of this trade. Dave just win. This news dropped in you i saw. What was your initial reaction in response to the news that marc andre fleury is no longer going to be a golden night. I mean i think we heard somewhere spurs if you follow the right people on twitter and things like that there were some rumblings elliott freeman from sports that hey kind of floated that something fell apart at the draft with a goal and he didn't really say it by name but he kind of enhancing in some other folks have been hinting. That chicago had shown some interest in marc andre. Fleury and i think we can say now. Because i don't think it's going to happen. But apparently like new jersey had shown some interest in robin lehner and maybe new jersey showed some interest in our contract forty as well. It seemed like kalama criminal alluded to a second team as well that you know kinda come in at the end. It may be wanted to do something as well. Also in that regard. I think you know it wasn't like totally caught off guard and yet i say all that and you're just never ready for it like you see it. Come across you see the nights in makes phone calls and talk some to some people in you know. They put their release out. And it's just like really. It really really happened like you know. I mean you're kind of preparing for your preparing for it and then it happens and it's still just feels you know like it came out of left field in and you just never saw common. The as is one of those things where in we've obviously mentioned on the show several times. The possibility that nights could move a goaltender this off season. We talked about it all the time last off season when there were i would say even more rampant rumors that marc andre fleury was on the trading block potentially on the move but until you know they actually pull the trigger on it until as use of kind of like the tweet comes out from the night saying. Yep it's official. we have traded. Marc andre. Fleury as you said it just kinda hits you almost like a bus brick to everyone. Say it's just something that takes awhile to really impact and realize that the organization you know for better for worse there obviously hoping for better is never going to be the same dave. We'll see you know. He certainly had his impact on the city. I think on clarity some fans and all that you.

"Here's a guy smitty that you know he. He's he put in vegas on the map for goodness sakes just won the vezina trophy. Like you've been traded. How disrespected would you feel. If your marc andre fleury and eating him get a call the courtesy of a call. Let you know you'd been dealt away. Never got to the stature of flurry for sure. But that hasn't been handled right In the last couple of years Dating back to the to the playoffs. Basically since Pete the boras come in and be been the coach there. He's always been leaning towards leonard a little more and and Yeah you're right. He he put vegas on the map when they were an expansion team and he carried the load All the way to the finals and he seems still a great goaltender and You know chicago of talk that he's gonna retire but i think you'll end up going chicago. And and and what a clear salary dump when you're when you're acquiring You know basically a future hall of famer for guy who's never played in the national hockey league. Yeah am i Maybe i'm jumping on on vegas a little too much. You're maybe me the players perspective on being traded. It's obviously a disappointment that you're moving on most of the time i guess sometimes is a good thing. Maybe it's a bad situation. You want to get to a better one but generally in big picture terms. It's probably a disappointing day. Does it matter if you actually hear from the team before you read it on twitter. Is that a big deal or not. It is and I was back in the day and it is now. You wanna hear From the team. That's that dealt you before you talked to anybody else. Then you talk to the team that's acquired you and and you can digest it a little bit. You have a little bit time. Things happen quickly But for him for flurry not to get to be told about this Beforehand is is unacceptable. Because of what he's what he's done for that franchise and We'll see where it goes but he definitely He's been the face of that franchise so it's It's probably disappointing in his is no question and follow a vegas writer on twitter. And he put it out today because marc andre fleury founded. He got traded via twitter but he also pointed out he he writes golden knights power rankings on players finding it they got traded oscar lindberg and that was when he got traded to ottawa..

"Mean, Yeah, he did. I don't know. I'm trying to Everyone. I think you might be right. I don't know why I'm trying to stick up for Peter to board. I I don't know. And I have to go back. And look, I don't know what the beef with Gerard Gallant was. Like I don't know. I don't remember what the What caused him to be fired. Uh, if there was something else other than just they weren't Playing that well, but it's like, how do you mean? How do you hold somebody to the standard of they went to the Stanley Cup final in their first year of existence. Like it's shooting that grant you a little bit more than in God. Gerard Go on. But again, I don't know the inside scoop. Maybe the players hated him or something like that. But you look at that that moved to Peter DeVore, because why Because the sharks um God. And egregious penalty called on you in a playoff series, so they advanced. And you didn't I don't know. I mean, he's not a bad coach. But I think that I don't think he's among the elite. Coaches in the NHL, and I think he made the wrong I I think he mishandled his goaltenders. I do. I think that he did that. And I think that that Was one of the big things that led to the downfall of the Vegas Golden Knights in this round was the mishandling of the Golan's alright Peter to board coach just fine, and the In the AB series, right? That He's one of the better coaches and manage NHL, but he's not Wait. He's gone in the upper echelon, and I know he said it, uh, last night that even the coach is going to look at themselves and figure out what they can do better. Think stick with one goalie. And if you don't believe and either goalie then get Get your can McCrimmon Kelly McCrimmon, your general manager. Tell him to go get Seinfeld Group our as my let him go. I mean, if you don't have the goalie that you believe in on this roster, then get your your general manager, too. Go get him for. Yeah, and that's how it works. Aaron. Why are, she says I would like Marc Andre Fleury in a heartbeat in Las Vegas should have played him every night. Yeah, I mean, The excuse of Marc Andre Fleury is old. I didn't totally biased. I mean, that's basically the argument he made after Marc Andre Fleury misplayed the parking game three and they went to Robben Lennar. They one after the game. Peter Devore is like, Oh, well, you know, we haven't had much rest and Marc Andre Fleury's 36 or 37. Years old. Okay, And then you go back to Marc Andre Fleury. So it's okay. Maybe there is something to the rest thing, but you bring him back in and he loses. And then you're right back to Robin Leonard. And what kind of position you putting Robin Lennar in To ask him to come into that game and save your season. I just drink. I'm not saying that Marc Andre Fleury would be blamed today if he would have if he would have played the entirety of this series like Aaron is suggesting. And They ended up losing Marc Andre Fleury would be the guy that most people blame. That's the way it works. It's the same as when you are a quarterback, right? You get too much of the credit. And all in too much of the blame most of the time. It seems the same thing with goalies, but that's not a reason to not play him. You're not, but I just I don't think it's hindsight. You know, you may look at and be like, Oh, well, they lost. So that's why you're saying that. I don't think it's that I thought last night I'm watching and I I said this isn't this isn't the right. Uh, there's in the right call. I could have been proven wrong last night, but I wasn't, uh, pad on the topic event. Simmons. So if you're just tuning in and microphone, it's Brian talking about Ben Simmons today. Yes, I am. You know why Because Tom brought it up. So I addressed it. There is a trade proposal that is circulating the inter webs. Today it is between the Nuggets and the Philadelphia 76 ers, where the Nuggets would end up with Ben Simmons. And in return, the Nuggets would give up Aaron Gordon Monte Morris will Barton and they would give up two first round picks. I said that to me. I'm not ready to give up on Aaron Gordon. Yeah. I mean, there's no reason to give up and Aaron Gordon in trading him would not be Would not be a vote of of a lack of confidence. The argument for the trade is Ben Simmons is better than Aaron Gordon, and I think there's an argument. To be made there. But But I'm just saying that I saw too much from this team for those 12 games after they got Aaron Gordon before Jamal Murray got hurt to bail on Aaron Gordon. I'm just now I'm ready to do it. I want to see this group. Together again next season. If you told me that I could trade will Barton for Ben Simmons. I do it in a heartbeat. If you told me I could trade Jamychal green Ben Simmons or even Michael Porter for Ben Simmons. I would do that, but you can't make the money work. Pat is not even as high on Ben Simmons as I am, says Ben Simmons is a back up that back. See, I just I think that's underrating the other aspects of Ben Simmons game. I do. Because, um, years ago. Oh, no. In fact, Because the guy is an elite defender. He's good rebounder. And he's a good passer. He's plus and passing defense and rebounding. He's not a backup year afterward, but he is a terrible shooter, and it has to get better and again. I don't know. Um You know, I don't know if he's lacks work ethics. That's the word on the street lately. That he has been coddled and he hasn't worked hard at improving. If that's the case, he's got to change that. I mean his career is at a crossroads. And I read. I read today that at the N B a draft combine that, um Ben Simmons representation. Spoke with Daryl Morey in the six years about potentially trading him not demanding a trade. Just like Hey, what are you guys thinking about? As far as a trade bends kind of thinking this, whatever Whatever. So we're heading down that road. I don't As far as the Nuggets go. I don't think Ben Simmons is happening. I don't I don't see it. But I don't think that Ben Simmons plays next season in Philly. I think we're I think the damage has been done. I don't think that Daryl Morey looks at this situation says All I need is a slightly better shooting. Ben Simmons. I think he understands that this team has some other flaws that need to be addressed in the easiest way to do it is by trading and beat or Ben Simmons and I don't think he wants to trade Joel and be Redemption, so And then with all the criticism and all the criticism that's coming Ben Simmons way over the course of the next few months in Philadelphia, I just I don't see how it happened..
