"This and promised to do something about it. So I think in the church were at the stage where they have to be made to do something about right? We see that's really interesting it goes against and you've described it. It can't be sort of a bottom up issue. It has to be top down issue from from the pope and from the hierarchy. But before I continue with what could be done and why it's being done. Could I ask you if you don't mind to explain what happened to you as a very young teenager? When when you were abused. I mean, how did that even happen? Well, I was I was very devout Catholic was an Irish Catholic. I was sick. I had a disease osteomyelitis in my head to toss for an operation. And I went into a children's house because I was twelve just on the borderline of turning thirteen and I was very innocent the innocence of sort of a six year old now because I was a child of the fifties. I went into the hospital. I was there for three weeks, the Catholic chaplain. He befriended me he made me his special friend. I felt very lucky that he was picking me out as you know, really special friend, and to me he was such an important figure, you know, but I had a room of my own began to come round in the evenings. And then the the friendliness turned into abuse and sexual abuse and sexual interference. I didn't know what he was doing. I didn't know a newish was wrong. It felt awful. He took intimate. Photographs and all the time. I felt. Confused. I didn't know what he was doing. I didn't know why he was doing it. But I knew I didn't want to happen. And when I said to him don't do this. It's wrong. Whatever you're doing. I want you to do it. He kept telling me, I'm a priest. You know, I can't do something wrong. You know? I can't there's something wrong with you. He said if you think what I'm doing is wrong. So is charged way of thinking, I thought he is a priest. He is a man the count do something wrong. So there's definitely something wrong. With me. You know, I'm a bad person. How did that feeling of being a bad person lasted with me for many many years, and how did you emerge from that feeling because then you did, you know, many years later you join the pope's commission. And you were hoping that you could I guess use your own experience, but your own commitment to stopping this kind of abuse. How did that come about? For twenty years. I suffered the effects of the Beauce, you know, panic attacks anxieties hospitalizations with depression, it destroyed many years of my life. And then eventually I reported it because the first case is here in Ireland were in the nineties, and I reported my abuser in one thousand nine hundred five. And the police start to investigate. But I went to my daises and the archbishop. He refused to cooperate with the police. He protected my abuser. He protected him totally and the police investigation and my abuser was jailed. But what happened at the time was that? I saw the diocese the archbishop going out in the telling the people that the church were doing everything as they should in these cases while I knew behind closed doors. They were doing nothing of the sort and that push me to to speak out. I thought people need to know that what the church was saying what the church was doing or two different things. I got a lot of therapy for my abuse. And thankfully, have been very well since then and my life changed, but I went on then to to try and get the church to understand the damage abuse. Those two CHAI the damage it does to the rest of your life, and that by protecting these men they were complicit in that. And I joined with my own eyes suspended different archbishop came in. I helped set up their child protection office. I worked on safeguarding guidelines with the Irish church than I spoke enrollment two thousand twelve symposium. And from that, I was invited to join the the pope's commission on the protection of minors which was to advise him on what changes were needed. And that I enjoyed that in two thousand and four right. Well, it's interesting to hear that just as you didn't get heard in the church in your case, the police did take care of it, you then resigned from this commission because you say that the Vatican the people in charge of dealing with the information you putting out there one listening either that that you could give all the. Reports on abuse that you liked but it wasn't being dealt with during those three years. I worked with really excellent colleagues experts in every area of this issue. And we drew up recommendations for pope Francis to hold people in leadership accountable to bring in better safeguarding university. He approved these recommendations, and he gave them to his curious to implement them. And that's where they stopped they disappeared into the Sunde. So after three years of seeing recommendations being made being approved and then being discarded, I felt it was no point in remaining. And I think the pope could start at right now to clear the Vatican out of all those men who are so resistant to change and who still live in that old mentality. A lot of things that abuse is simply Amara laps. It's sin. We should forgive. These men and put them back. So so getting those men at the very top. And if they're not going to protect children or they don't think they need to remove them first of all straightway from the Vatican. It's Mara Collins. I wonder what you've made of other recent stories that have come out. There's a big report about how a whole group inside. The Vatican is trying to scapegoat homosexuals, and we have a little bit of a sound bite by Bob Radera. She's an abusive. I've former executive director survivors network of those abused by pre snap. This is what she said about the current attempt to explain away this systematic abuse. Church officials have framed this as a homosexual issue for a couple of weeks since it takes away from the real focus of the problem, which is criminal

Let's check the traffic and transit on the tune things are still really slow on ninety five northbound this is because of one of those mobile work crews they are on the move northbound as you approach a cavity. But they're moving slowly. And so is all the traffic behind it. The two right lanes are blocked with this. Now, we have heavy traffic still with us on the turnpike connector bridge. But it's eastbound from New Jersey where it's much much worse. And that's because only one league gets by with construction. They did this yesterday where they actually picked up one of the sides. I got a lot better. So maybe that's what's happening. We'll see we can find out for you. "Fad expert witness mark allen a professor of strategic studies at johns hopkins university in the united states spent a decade working at the us department of defense i was focused on trying to understand what the future looks like but in particular what are the wars the us military might have to fight a difficult job oh pretty pretty tricky mara collins to tell us why a war between saudi arabia and iran would likely bring in the us on why that would be a game changer we need to look now at the persian gulf that lies between saudi arabia and around and suzue men on the narrow stretch of water which separates the sea from the gulf of oman is cold the strait of whole news it's a hot button place for the united states frankly it for the world because you see so much oil traffic going through it how much of the world has a deep interest in this city anyone who uses oil does every woman yes so walt could happen in the strait of hormuz news i could imagine the iranians lang mind so the iran in military has a couple thousand minds and it really what so convenient about mind dropping is it's very easy to do i don't want you to picture like a massive ship that we need to quite obviously throw a bunch of mines into an area instead you could have fishing boats dropping the mind so a mind as just lane there and when you're ship goes over it it explode the would close the strait once you have a few mines laid you have to assume that there are many many more and that would be a dramatic turning point this becomes an entirely different conflict the minute some things happens in that strait of hormuz if you see the strait of hormuz security and stability been impeded potential closure immediately the united states will become involved zero 700 where operating in the northern arabian gulf impositions united agrees one one decimal twodoor who who the us navy and it's hassles could science i mean we're talking less than an hour at most less than an hour oh absolutely where all these jets while they're all across the gulf the.
