Why Americans Are Still Broke

"We know in our current state of our country. There are a lot of folks that just don't make financial decisions and do not find themselves in the healthiest financial circumstance. And in our opinion. It's a little bit therefore most often. Yeah I we have a huge problem where I think the average American is trying to keep up with the Joneses. We have an issue where we're looking around instead of being happy with what we have. We're trying to look at our neighbors. And what we what the all the statistics show is. Our neighbors are broke. And here's what makes me so sad about this whole thing. You have everything in the world going for we. We're in a globalized economy. Meaning that the world is getting smaller and smaller. Innovation is actually speeding up. There is no reason that we all should be benefiting from these great things economically. But we can't get out from underneath our own just consumption. It is consumerism that is destroying the ability to create an army of dollar bills. And what I think is so great as these. Three reasons are things that you can control. There are things that you can change things you can improve upon so we. WanNa educate you on why we feel a lot of Americans abroad but it wouldn't be a money guy show unless we gave you some stats you how bad Americans really are with money. The first thing is seventy eight percent of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. That means it's seventy eight percent of Americans can't get to the next month if their paycheck doesn't come in this month and isn't doesn't have to be that way if you're living paycheck to paycheck then immediately tells me something right off the bat. You're probably not saving any of your current paycheck because if you were saving you'd be building a little bit up so you're spending everything that you make if you needed more proof of that sixty percent of Americans can't even come up with a thousand dollars if they had emergency. They're in trouble exactly right. So let's figure out how to let's talk about. What are we actually doing? What's the biggest reason? Why Americans Will Stabroek? Yeah I I think that I'm reminded. I think my mom used as a schoolteacher. She always used to say that. Failing to plan is planning to fail and we think that that is the number one biggest reason Americans they broke is because they don't have any plan in place they don't have any sort of budget any sort of strategy in place from Jump Street the biggest thing that we see I call it the rudderless ship or starting out on a road map it used to be. I don't even know if young people who know what a roadmap looks like anymore. I mean you wrote. I know believe me used to even whole cottage industries where triple a. you tell them where you're going or you had a print out a little spiral booklet. Where you had mapquest ways ways is exactly what I'm talking about but imagine if you were going to a place you've never visited and you didn't even use an APP like ways you just basically said I'm just GONNA fill my way through this and I'll be honest with the average American. That is what they do in their twenties. That's what they do in their thirties. And it's a probably about my age when you get the midlife crisis that people go. Whoa wait a minute. I'm going to be at that destination and I don't really know where to get there. I don't know how far it is. I don't know how much I need. That's right and that's exactly what's going on so we're skipping steps so we want to kind of show you. Why would anybody about premium brands by designer clothes by designer or luxury cars without knowing exactly where they stand in it there ahead of the curve behind the curve gotten run over by the curve but that is what is going on with America? And don't miss here. There's nothing wrong with luxury. Brands or nice homes are nice cars or fill in the blank. But there is an order in which you're supposed to achieve those types of things if you don't have the financial foundations if you don't have the solid footing in place and you get it out of whack. You set yourself up to be rudderless into stay rudderless as you work through your financial journey. So let's talk about planning. Because that is the thing fidelity has a study. They've come out with. I've put it in. So many shows that I put it out there is that one of the biggest indicators of success is that have you taken the time to actually create a plan. So let's go through tips so we can make sure you're not a rudderless ship that there's actually something going on there so the first thing you can do when you're starting out and trying to figure things out is knowing actually where you leaking water. Where are you spending your money and the best thing you can do for? That is a budget yet so us all the time. Now I'm GonNa ask you true or false Brian. Do you budget budg-. I'm the same way. We don't budget however there was a time in the life of the hand did have a budget. When I first started out I had to understand if this is how much have coming in. This is how much I need to have going out. How do I make those to line up? And so we think that early on it may make sense for you to have a budget and what's great is in the row in which we live. There are APPs there are worksheets their spreadsheets. There are all kinds of things that you can now use at your disposal to make this easier than it's ever been before. Yeah budgeting is no different than exercise to me. I mean it's something that I know I don't like to do but it is something I've practice in the past because I was trying to develop muscle memory create habits. And that's the part is that if you don't do this you really are not going to get the fruits of what comes from laying the groundwork of budgeting so make sure you understand that. The next step is automate. You got to automate the process. The more things that you can set up and this is what is going to allow you. If you hate budgeting there is a way to get away from budgeting. It's actually you pay yourself first. You automate all the things that are coming out of your your accounts monthly. So you're funding all the big things first and then you don't have to worry about the minutiae focus on the little stuff. But you can't get there unless you put in the work on the front end for you. The dirty little secret about human nature is if we operate under this place where you know what I'm just GonNa wait to the end of the month and whatever I have left over I'm going to save. We'll it's amazing. How every single time you set yourself up to do that you get to the end of the month in somehow that money has found a way to evaporate so if you can make yourself just like you said Pay Yourself. I have an environment of four scarcity. You will set yourself up for success.

"Get those too. So you Email me, and maybe we'll have a little further discussion based on your feedback spended viewers story of the week. Okay. What would happen? If you remove the big five from Utech diet, are you brave enough. Megan do okay after I read this story. I realized no. Photos. Kashmir, he'll apparently has been she's been doing so each week. And then writing about her experience earlier this week it may have been late last week. But definitely in the last couple of days because I think today she posted the next one. And I think it's Microsoft anyways. The prior one she wrote about removing Google from her tech live. I just found it super eliminating. They the way that they did this because you think about the internet, the great, you know, grand sprawling internet and all of these ways that Google probably is involved. But you don't know because they've just made these relationships with companies or companies are, you know, tying onto Google's API is in the back end. And you just never know that as user the way that they actually made sure that Kashmir could kind of eliminate Google from her tech usage was to create a VPN that blocks this eight million six hundred ninety nine thousand six hundred forty eight IP addresses all that Google controls. So by blocking all of Pia dresses, it basically shuts down any way, shape or form that Google could possibly be, you know, get its hands in in using whatever these services, are that Kashmir might actually be tagging onto. So, you know, ended up shutting down almost everything that she wanted to do. She had to find alternatives. Fire FOX duck duck. Go for searching, apple maps mapquest was lifetime. Use mapquest. She's still live. Do you print out your directions because that's what we did? We quest. Pronounced the two pages. Mom, she's gonna mapquest something. Yes. Hold outs diehard. Boy, apple. All the stuff was happening through Google services. So she had to kind of route around that. And yes, she was just amazed at how broken the internet as a whole is when you remove Google from it entirely, and she says it's just getting worse, which is worse..

Google is everywhere! Because, it's free. Is this predatory pricing?

"Vigna. And Thomas says, one of the keys to what he calls Google's monopolistic behavior was making the Android operating system free be did claim that Google providing of Android for free, constituted predatory pricing predatory pricing. This refers to a strategy that companies will use to drive competitors out of business or to block entry to new competitors by offering a product or service at such a low price that they cannot compete thereby claiming the entire market for itself. Now, it is weird to think of free as a price, but it is. It is zero dollars and that is today's indicator zero dollars and the predatory pricing aspect was not part of the European Commission's official ruling against Google. But Thomas says that it was an important part of his firm's initial complaint to the EU and it was one of the economic underpinnings of what he calls Google's cellphone monopoly. And here's how that worked in Google case according to Thomas. So Google bought the Android operating system back in two thousand five started offering it to phone makers for free. It was sort of awesome open source thing that was going to help make competition in the cell phone market easier. Take a huge expense out of the equation for people who wanted to. Make new cell phone and make a larger platform for app developers, very of the people by the people for the people. Exactly. Thomas says that cell phone makers just got addicted to not having to pay for the operating system that was used on their phones. They got addicted to not having to worry about the cost. They could just invest in building the body of the phone, the brain of the phone. It was free soon Nokia Motorola, and everyone else which is counting on not having to pay for an operating system and the price competition among smartphones got fierce why this is nominally so important is that phone manufacturers have very low profit margins, whether or not Google is breaking any trust laws. The fact that Android is so big witness has been really profitable for Google. Just this year. Google is expected to take in sixty billion dollars from mobile ads. There are companies that make apps the compete with Google apps opera and fire. FOX are alternative search. Apps to Google Chrome scout and mapquest compete with Google maps and those apps want to get on your phone except when you get your phone, Google's apps are already they're, they're pre installed, and this is where the monopoly idea comes in. The EU says, Google is using its all powerful Android operating system to force us all to use Google apps and to be fair, Google is not blocking other apps. They're just getting their own apps in front of you I, but and this was in the EU decision. Inertia is a powerful force tar. Cal, Shane is the editor of research buzz, which reports online search. She says, yeah, you could ignore the preinstalled chrome browser and downloading fire FOX apper an opera search app or a mapquest app or whatever. But why would you is right there knowing, I mean, yeah, you can move out to that university other options. But in your shis suggest you won't. Google is everywhere. Ever wondered why?

"Eight started out with just with this funny little irony that occurred to me because I was googling Google the company specifically. I was looking into this story about Google getting hit with a Mondo fine from the European Union for antitrust violations get alert of this card. If five point one billion dollars, the big fine. The us complaint was all about mobile. The EU said Google had been abusing its dominance in these cell phone operating system arena. Google makes the Android operating system and the operating system is basically your phones little tiny brain. It runs the software. It runs all the apps and systems on your phone and Android is also the operating system on eighty percent of the world smartphones, basically, unless you have an iphone, you're almost certainly using Google's Android operating system on your phone. And the EU said Google has used its Android system to force cell phone makers companies like Nokia and Motorola. And Samsung to pre install other Google products on their phones, specifically apps like the chrome up and the Google search app with the idea being that Google created this operating system monopoly in part of the cell phone market and then started to abuse it. But how did Google allegedly pull this off? How did it get every cell phone maker in the world except apple to use Android? Well, according to the complaint filed with the EU Google took over the operating system universe the same way, it gets all to do everything else. It made it free. This is the indicator. I'm Stacey manic Smith and I'm Garcia today on the show the price of free.

"Comparing contrasting three different spreadsheet so i'm i'm a fan of that i support you and your spreadsheet but here's the deal have you factored in effectively the reality of what inflation could be over a long period of time because it can be brutal and that impacts both the amount of money we need to save it also impacts any clue about our withdrawal rates make it to retirement because what if inflation only what we've seen historically would even higher now we have to pour more money than we would expect from our portfolio from your invested dollars when you're in retirement to have enough to live on and you run the risk than of running out of money your risk increases rights how do you plan for that so first of all for this engineers but also what if you've been to another financial planner at some point and you've gone through a whole process with them and they've they've come out with this is kind of what you need to do for the future here's the problem with financial planners okay i am a financial planner so i can criticize my industry that's the right that that's what you get to do when you're inside of it right the problem is far too many people for decades have created extensive financial plan ends given them to clients and then said go off have a great life how many of you have experienced this i know a lot of you have because i've met with you and you've told me i made this plan you bring in notebooks beautiful three ringbinders with 100 and fifty pages of data and i say okay that's amazing when was the last time you updated this with your planner in usually you go i haven't talked to my planner since we did this i we we haven't even talked okay when you get a plan like that right a plan that's very static it's in the moment it might be a great starting point but that's all it is and the best way to think about this is mira back before we had the beautiful phone gps experience that we have now for directions back before all that was in your car you had an atlas or maybe when mapquest came out a few years ago you would print out direction somewhere and.

"Comparing contrasting three different spreadsheet so i'm i'm a fan of that i support you and your spreadsheet but here's the deal have you factored in effectively the reality of what inflation could be over a long period of time because it can be brutal and that impacts both the amount of money we need to save it also impacts any clue about our withdrawal rich make it to retirement because what if inflation only what we've seen historically would even higher now we have to pour more money than we would expect from our portfolio from your invested dollars when you're in retirement to have enough to live on and you run the risk than of running out of money to your risk increases right how do you plan for that so first of all for this engineers but also what if you've been to another financial planner at some point and you've gone through a whole process with them and they've they've come out with this is kind of what you need to do for the future here's the problem with financial planners okay i am a financial planner so i can criticize my industry that's the right that that's what you get to do when you're inside side of it right the problem is far too many people for decades have created extensive financial plan ends given them to clients and then said go off have a great life how many of you have experienced this i know a lot of you have because i've met with you and you've told me how i made this plan you bring in notebooks beautiful three ringbinders with 100 and fifty pages of data and i say okay that's amazing when was the last time you updated this with your planner and usually you go i haven't talked to my planner since we did this i we haven't even talked okay when you get a plan like that right a plan that's very static it's in the moment it might be a great starting point but that's all it is and the best way to think about this is mira back before we had the beautiful phone gps experience that we have now for directions back before all that was in your car you had an atlas or maybe when mapquest came out a few years ago you would print out direction somewhere and that.

"We need to save it also impacts any clue about our withdrawal rates when we get to retirement because what if inflation is not only what we've seen historically but even higher now we have to pour more money than we would expect from our portfolio from your invested dollars when you're in retirement to have to live on and you run the risk than of running out of money that your risk increases right how do you plan for that so first of all for those engineers but also what if you've been to another financial planner at some point and you've gone through the whole process with them and they've they've come out with this is kind of what you need to do for the future here's the problem with financial planners okay i am a financial planner so can criticize my industry that's the right which it get to do when you're inside that it right the problem is far too many people for decades have created extensive financial plans given them to clients and then said go off have a great life how many of you experienced this i know a lot of you have because i've met with you and you've told me make this plan you bring in notebooks beautiful three ring binders with 150 pages of data and i say okay that's amazing when was the last time you updated this your planner and usually you go i haven't talked to my planner since we did this i will be haven't even talked okay when you get a plan like that right a plan that's very static it's in the moment it might be a great starting point but that's all it is and that the best way to think about this is murder back before we had the beautiful phone gps experience that we have now for directions you know back before all that was in your car you had an atlas or maybe when mapquest came out a few years ago you would print out directions somewhere in that.
