Dodgers Out-Slug Padres to Win High-Scoring Affair

"A stunning finish on the double play off the bat of the former dodger manny. Machado as the dodgers hold on at pet, go to win seven six, they win the series as well over the Padres, two games to one John Shea Jim Russell back with you here on the wrap up show, we said the padres lead baseball by the way and runs per game last. Last segment. They entered the day third in runs per game at five, and a half runs per game on the season and against scored six runs here today. So they've been very, very good offensively. But again, with the loss, they fall to seven and six on the season. Let's hear from the manager who was jacked for the first time in his career. Here's Jay Taylor game. Yeah, it's always good to see. You know the guys continue to battle and. You. Know we've we. Kind of felt that you know inside the. In the DUGOUT when we've been down never really feel like we're out of it and you know get get the heart of the order up and chance to you know always be in the game and. You know look at the end Mandy you know squared a ball up to to left field and and They made a hell of a play I. Mean it was A. Had to be you know a perfect throw and it was a perfect one hop throw and a intact. So but dancer question Yeah. It's. It's good to see him battling back and chip away and. You know we. You know we we came up short. Your first managerial ejection tonight. That's something that had been building up over the course of the game with Margaret Mature, as more of a spur of the moment reaction to that dish. Now. It's a, it's not built up minutes. Look. I think manny thought the ball was down I. thought it was down and. You know it either I go with me and he goes I'm guessing. So it's simple as up. Your thoughts on how? To. Handle. I thought you know Came in You know we were looking for a little softer landing but. The NFL west, there's there's no soft landing especially with the dodgers and. looking for a spark and. He gave up to ground balls got through and and then obviously Peterson clicking man you know. Peterson Click a couple balls tonight. You know and. But but I was impressed with how he went back out in the second inning and. I thought that was good and it's always nice to kind of You know finish on a on a higher note, and hopefully he gets some confidence and you know continues to go forth. Interesting admission there from JAS Tingler. We were hoping for a softer landing for Luiz Patino. Remember we heard yesterday literally yesterday when he was called up, he would not initially be pitching and high leverage spots. He makes his Major League debut, not not with the lead, but trailing four too. So you could argue the leverage component of it, but Jim again, he went left left right left with the VP that a left-wing cory seager who's read hide Jock Peterson three homers in the series including the homerun again. Again Against Patino and again, you're going to have to get him at one point or another. If you call them up, there's a reason you call it Emma but Jeez in the history of big league debuts, can it be much more difficult for Patina than the inning he had to deal with there could not have been more difficult. You're facing an MVP facing the guys at thirty six bombs last year who was notorious for being i. mean you saw in the home run Derby last year he. Is. Ball's. Chris Taylor their professional hitter. It's not an, there's no easy ways to face the dodgers especially in a four two game. You put him in there hopefully to have Jason, Taylor said this thing and there by the way it's four nothing before with two outs, TAT tease homers. So all of a sudden the dynamic of the game has changed it's chain, but but seniors already ready like you've already said he's GonNa Pitch the sixth, right? Like you wonder again at four nothing there you go. Down seven nothing whatever. But at fourteen like well, I'm back in the game and you don't want him to get up and then sit down again and I'm sure that's the reason why they put them in the game like look he's already ready. Maybe. It might be not the best time to put him in. But look, we just hit a two run bomb to to get us going hopefully and putting a guy in there where he is one of if not the top prospect on this in this organization, hopefully, we can get another spark on this guy route that is

NBA trade deadline: Winners, losers and teams in between

"Flurry of trades in the NBA a blockbuster in baseball mortar common colds to memorialize Kobe Bryant and highly visible way joined by ESPN's Howard Bryant good morning hours good morning Scott how are you I'm fine thanks is awesome aggressive deals in the NBA trade at the trade deadline who do you rack up as the winners and losers well and I'm not sure about the winners and losers of the trade deadline but certainly the winners and losers right now of the first half of the season you've got a look at the Lakers in the west and and the Milwaukee Bucks I think they are head and shoulders above everybody else how could you hold on for a moment our you know head yes government for you almost got me for a second there's got yeah Milwaukee is terrific and and they're great they're holding on the crushed Philadelphia the other night I thought coming into the season it was gonna be Philadelphia Milwaukee Los Angeles and Los Angeles Lakers and the clippers but I'm not too sure about the other two yet but we've got a long way to go I think trade deadline wise I think Miami Heat got much much better they got on great good dollar they made a very good deal with Memphis I think that Philadelphia tried to shore up of making a deal with with the warriors and de Angelo Russell going to Minnesota who knows what that's gonna do maybe there's a late run there but the bottom line is coming forward right now I still think that you've got two teams in this league disappointed the Boston Celtics didn't do anything but I think it's the box and the Lakers right now an official memorial for Kobe Bryant's been set for February twenty fourth they've been calls to make his image a permanent part of the game you even rent a Poland that did I did I read a little Twitter poll this morning which was soundly rejected to replace Kobe Bryant is Jerry west to is the logo of the NBA with cut him a cell away from the silhouette of your request yes absolutely and it would have been fitting in some ways because Jerry west was the the man behind making sure Kobe Bryant ended up with the Lakers making that draft day trade with the Charlotte Hornets and I I understand add on one on one level the need or they want to want to memorialize Kobe I also understand that the NBA has been around since nineteen forty seven and maybe it's time to create a new logo Jerry west has been there fifty years since nineteen sixty nine however I do think that if you're going to think about and I'm a new logo or and a modern logo it's probably got to be Michael Jordan right or but I got an arm and a leg yeah but I also understand the desire right now for people to feel that something should be done for Kobe Bryant after after all that happened Boston Red Sox LA Dodgers Minnesota Twins switching sports agreed to a three team trade Tuesday that's been perhaps delay it has been delayed because of some medical records Mookie Betts has what they call a generational player MVP Golden Gloves traded to the Dodgers are the red Sox making the worst roster decision since they sold Babe Ruth's contract well if you red Sox fans are very happy about it especially because it's a generational player Mookie Betts is a beloved player two years ago he wins the M. B. P. and they won the World Series you're looking at a guy that fans just adore and it's a very cynical move in some ways but it also may very well be a huge business deal for them because number one we know that super star players now at this level after Manny Machado deal after the Bryce Harper deal your it in and now the the Gerrit Cole deal you're looking at three hundred and fifty four hundred million dollars to sign a player and if Mookie Betts didn't want to play with the red Sox will find out over the next several weeks and months if that was the case then of course they had to move them but on the other hand if that's not the case the red Sox are a super power they can sign whoever they want they've got money it's looking like a cynical deal we will see I'm good at and by the way I got as you know your cubs aren't far behind because you've got a guy like Chris Brian who's another cornerstone player and what does that mean for the cubs keep these players and the fans love him yeah thank you very much ESPN's Howard Bryant thanks so much no my pleasure

Blockbuster deal: Red Sox agree to trade Mookie Betts, David Price to Dodgers

"So the dodgers Red Sox have agreed to a blockbuster deal two thousand eighteen. Al Mvp Mookie. Betts and pitcher. David price have been traded to Los Angeles. Is it monkey the second best player in baseball. My crazy I thought it was Mike. Troughton mookie Betts might not now in the three-team team deal the dodgers. Since outfield Alex Vertigo to Boston and Kenza Majeida to the twins and the Red Sox also receive pitching prospects bruised doc from Minnesota clearly. Obviously a money thing for Boston it has they WanNa get below the luxury tax threshold price as a three year. Ninety six nine dollar deal and mookie designed a Deal as well okay. Okay I got a taste of first of all dodgers are very well run and in the dodgers do not spend. They're very smart. They spend a lot more than they do. They have a ton. The dodgers have great farm system and everybody they bring up works like everybody so they spend a lot of money on research and development development. They have passed. They passed on Harper. They passed on Zach grinky they passed on somebody else. That was expensive. Manny Machado. That didn't go all in on him. So for the dodgers to go in on McKee bets. It tells you he's a he's a day. One changed the franchise talents superstar or star. Yes he is the second best player in the sport. I don't know what his war consecutive gold glove last year. Obviously when AOL. MVP and she says. How are the red sox struggling struggling with money? I don't get it. I thought it was the Yankees made the most money because they have the necessary they have a regional network. That's a cash cow so yankees make the most money. Isn't it like dodgers Red Sox.

It it's the depth of it. That is is really sure you know, what the story is going to be this year. And it's not gonna be the pitching, Cory Seager. It's they lost Manny Machado loss teams. Like a exactly the this is not a they pursued him in Manny Machado opted to go to San Diego. This was a World Series ends shake hands. Look them in the is it many. Thank you for everything. "For. This is after hours with Amy Lawrence. One of his thirty eight home runs that was topped at tops in the National League. It did top the National League last year and Nolan was third in the NFL MVP voting. And now he becomes the highest paid position player in terms of money per season in baseball history. It sounds convoluted. It's not he's making more per year than any other position player ever has after the Rockies give him an eight year two hundred sixty million dollar extension. So that you don't have to do the math. I did thirty two and a half million dollars, which means he's making more per season. Then Manny Machado and thought it was interesting that we talk to Thomas Harding who covers the Rockies then with them in spring training for MLB dot com. And he said the Rockies weren't willing to give Aeronautica same amount of years. So the same term of a contract as Manny Machado. But when you think of it's because Aaron auto is about to be twenty eight in April. But if you think about it. If you're talking about the same the same timeframe for the two players because Machado's twenty six by the time he's done with a steel if he doesn't opt out with the Padres. He will be thirty six that was easy math. But it's the same age or not will be when he gets at the end of his deal that the Rockies are giving him and again without the opt out there is an opt-out halfway through. But thirty two and a half million dollars. And to me, it's a huge move by the Rockies because of a lot of the young talent. They have around him. Including that pitching staff. Now, they'll have to be paid eventually. But right now, they're all not all of them, but they're still early in their career. So they're cheaper. Using my air quotations, they're cheaper on the black market. But think about Trevor story and Charlie black men and the team added Daniel Murphy, and I like what again Thomas Harding had to say, you can find that whole conversation our podcast after hours, Amy Lawrence dot com. The idea is that bringing in Daniel Murphy gives the team something it hasn't had or didn't have last year pretty much the entire team was devoid of playoff experience. Well, Murphy's played in a World Series. And he's had a lot of at bats on the postseason stage. And so they've retooled the roster slightly, but most importantly, critical for them was to make sure that Aaron auto was locked up because he's the guy that would lead them to the promised land an interesting conversation, which we won't have on this show at least out right now. But I've seen some point to Aaron auto maybe after a couple of years he will be the best player in franchise history. So that's kind of he's not now, but he will be soon type of thing, you know, what would make the case if they actually won the World Series. Remember, they got there in two thousand seven but they didn't win it that season. Ehlo radio is where he can find me on Twitter, though, you have ten minutes left to be able to weigh in with your questions for ask me anything. So that's our show Twitter while you're there, take our NFL combine poll how much will you consume of the combine combine consumption? Our phone number's eight five five two one two four two two seven. Brandon is listening in Rochester. Welcome to after hours. Hey, how you doing extra taking my call? You're welcome. I question is do you think like the rocky signing Aaron Nolan if that'll like opened up the market for smaller market teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates and make them realize that they need to spend some money to compete in this. Day and era, and then I'll be. Okay. This is a rhetorical question. But I am using it because I feel like it will answer your question. Do you really think the pirates don't know that they need to spend money to be a contender? Do you think? That's the reason why they're not spending money. I mean, I think the reason they're not spending money is because they're looking at the past back in two thousand thirteen and everything when they made the run with Mkhatshwa and then Morten Lindberg. I mean, they really didn't spend any money on those players to make that run. So I think it's kind of pounded in their head that, hey, we don't need to do this. But no reality you do need to spend the money to get where you need to be. Yeah. I don't even know that. It's it's that. I don't think it's a knowledge issue. I think it's a it's a. A reluctance to spend money issue. This is a financial issue. It's a bottom line shoe. And and if they get to the playoffs great when they had the the winning seasons. Finally after what was it two decades? Great. But I don't know that the team is super concerned about whether or not it wins another World Series. Like, I don't know that that's the priority. I guess that's the message that I get when I see what is status quo with the pirates which is not being in on big name free agents. And generally not always they did have a stretch where they were they were committed to keeping their own guys. But even allowing their own guys to walk or to get traded before they get nothing for them. Okay. Thank you. You're welcome. I'm sorry. I wish I had better news. Like, yes. The pirates are in fact going to compete. I know that you have to spend two hundred sixty million dollars on one guy or three hundred million dollars on another guy to win. I don't think that that's a necessity. If you have a stacked farm system, so think about the we'll just use the Houston Astros because there are more recent example. I know that they have spent money in the last couple of years. But generally if you think about their World Series run other than just invert Lander who at the time was a trade. They're they're homegrown talent having finished what back to back seasons with a number one overall, picker whatever it was there. A homegrown talent came because they were really bad. So they get a lot of cases in baseball. You've got teams that are thinking it's better for us to be terrible. And to try to get some younger talent some draft picks, maybe stockpile draft picks and use those then to have cheaper labor that might also be. They might also be a surprise and turn out to be so good that you know, we are a contender. I don't know that the pirates are one of those teams that you look at it and think, oh, yeah, they're going to be all in on any big name free agents. The pirates are closing in. I just I saw this pop up. Alert the pirates are closing in on the fortieth anniversary of their last playoff series. When if you're a pirates fan that that is a big Ouch. They won three consecutive titles from the nine nine hundred ninety two nine hundred ninety two. Lost to the red than twice the brazen. The s. And then of course, had the two decades of losing seasons. They do have a really great park though. I love PNC park. Great place to watch a game. So there's that. "Would you do that? Where you didn't get the ten because now this is all about the average salary that you're going to get each year. It might not be the totality of this that over three hundred million dollars. Because that's that's what Scott Boris is up against Machado got three hundred what Bryce Harper's better than Manny Machado, these more marketable than Manny Machado. He deserves more than Manny Machado would've. Nobody's going to give you that. Because the Phillies are giving you an offer that it looks like you can refuse because I don't think Bryce Harper wants to play in Philadelphia. I think he liked the offer from Philadelphia feels like he's not or can't go back to the nationals. And then you start to shop the offer. And then you're going, wait a minute. I got crickets out here. Hey, scott. You said that they're going to be all these teams the Yankees and the dodgers in. Well, the dodgers had feels like, you know, may back door the Phillies here, and you know, but you got a big payroll there your third in the league and payroll you've made it to the World Series twice. Granted you've lost DNA Bryce Harper. Could you spend the money more wisely? But if I'm Bryce Harper, and you say I can be in a dodger uniform for five years, and it's around, you know, two Hyundai. Sign up signing up. I don't know if his agent let him that's the key. Because I would rather do five where I wanna go instead of ten where I'm supposed to go. That that would be my philosophy Bryce Harper in LA you live in Vegas. You wanna be in Los Angeles or New York, and that would be the approach I would take. Absolutely. 'cause I don't think he wants playing Philadelphia apple, and it's a great point. You brought up the what the livelihood or the lifestyle of the player is not the priority of the agent. I'm guessing the agent wants to set the market. So he could get more guys like Bryce Harper to sign up with them. So they have to divergent agendas. Yes. And Bryce Harper..

"And Dan Shulman Jay Bilas retailer have the call tonight of Duke, North Carolina. And we're going to talk to Jay Bilas coming up at the bottom of the hour at the top of the next hour. Jeff passan who broke the story yesterday of Manny Machado signing the three hundred million dollar contract in San Diego. Not to talk to him about that. We'll talk to him about Bryce Harper. And where he's going next. We'll also talk to him, but all these other free agents because it almost seems like there's attitude that as long as Manny Machado and Bryce Harper sign all's right with the world, but don't tell that tomorrow. When Gonzales don't tell that some of these other guys that probably feel like this slow dragging process of free agency for the rest of them. Some really good baseball players that are still without jobs. We'll find out where some of those guys are going lady on bell is not going to be transitioned by the Pittsburgh Steelers. So football free agency gets a jump start before the free agent market even opens in the NFL. We now know that the bidding will be open for. Viane bell. So we'll talk about that. With you at triple eight say ESPN, triple eight say ESPN bobble shoes infra Steven. And I'm gonna start with Manny Machado. I don't get a chance to do. These shows all that often. And it's rare for me that a story like that breaks within twenty four hours of me being able to talk about it. So I was excited when I saw this break yesterday that I was going to be in here to talk about it. You know, it's funny in this era of instantaneous responses on Twitter on Instagram, whether you host a talk show, you're on sportscenter. Whatever it is. There was a ton. I used to be a talk show host regularly now in the play by play guy about ninety five percent of the time. I still get a chance to host these talk shows from time to time always excited to do it when these stories happen, but we live in a world. Now where you want the instantaneous reaction to what happens to the world is sports. So yesterday when the Manny Machado news breaks, my first thought is going to get something on Twitter. I have an opinion and I want to throw it out there. Now, my felt used to be back when I host to talk. Shows regularly twenty years ago that well let me read a little bit. You know, maybe there are some, you know, circumstances that I don't quite know about let's see what the length of the contract is what the money is anybody else going to San Diego. What may have driven a guy like Manny Machado to take this deal? But yesterday just in the moment that the contract is signed I go to Twitter and put my opinion out there, and my opinion at the time. And I guess I'm kind of proud the twenty four hours later, I think my opinion holds what I immediately tweeted the moment that Manny Machado 's contract of the San Diego Padres was announced was perfect from shadow. I assume he got his money. He did the weather is always perfect. He'll be able to play in complete relaxation, and he will never have to run to. I if he doesn't want to because no one will care and no one will notice and twenty four hours later after all of the different opinions. I've heard read all the different circa. Mm stances of the Padres suppose. It incredible farm system. The fact that they still think they might be in it for Bryce Harper. None of that has changed. My opinion of why Manny Machado took this deal. And why he went to San Diego and welcome to the world of Robinson canot complete baseball obscurity, if you're Manny Machado, you know, hey, look with all due respect to everyone in San Diego. And God bless your Padres. If you're a Padre season ticket.

Phillies want Manny Machado, Bryce Harper

"To be feeding clear Phillies fans display all they've done. What they've done has been extraordinary despite all they've done. This off season would be considered an utter failure as affiliates. Don't walk away with Manny Machado. I can I can guarantee you for certain the front office is here. That. And I think no matter what it takes whether it's three thirty or three fifty or even north of that. I didn't the Phillies will do whatever is required to get done. Yeah. I said to Scott Miller, my sense was that John Middleton who made the comment about the Phillies, you know, perhaps spending stupid money. He would basically have to grab the steering wheel away from the front office analysts. What do you think? I I agree. I mean, those if they find a way not to to pull in Harper tho those are going to be word that he eats for very long time. I can assure you of that. All right. Let's talk about Manny Machado earlier in the week. I wrote a column in which I suggested that. I mean, I flat out don't think that the timing of the Machado signing is right because I don't think they're pitching develop enough. We we know that they have is tremendous wave of prospects coming you, send me a note after that though that maybe disagree a little bit both to an extent, I agree into an extent. I don't offer you both sides of the aisle. Here's the Padres. Lost ninety six games last season. And now have agreed to three hundred million dollar deal with Machado in that dynamic is practically without precedent. Before yesterday. There had been thirty nine nine figure contracts handed out to free agents in major league history. But only two of them were signed by team that won fewer than seventy games the previous season the oath. Dick's cubs. Went sixty six ninety six signed Alfonso Soriano to one hundred and thirty six million dollar deal. The twenty ten nationals went sixty nine ninety three. They signed Jason worth to a one hundred and twenty six million dollar deal. But the Padres of the top ranked form system, according to baseball America among other outlets, including our own law since two thousand five thirteen of the fourteen teams with that number one distinction made the playoffs BUSTER within two years. And the only exception was the twenty eleven royals and they wound up making it to back to back World Series in two thousand fourteen and twenty fifty. So let me ask you if you were Peter Seidler who is the owner of the Padres. And he's the one who's making like that not a general manager like AJ prowler. Would you have made the same decision that would have made the exact same decision? This is this is a city. In a franchise now that has the opportunity to explode because of the because the chargers have left they play in as we all know the best climate in America. Now have the opportunity to be the biggest show in town. I think Manny Machado though, he isn't Bryce Harper. In terms of celebrity is probably that present a better baseball player. Just in terms of his tools, Dan, Bryce Harper is I will go on record as saying that he will be well worth three hundred million dollars over the next ten years. And I will also point out that the five year player option is not something that shouldn't should should go without being mentioned because as you know, the collective bargaining agreement expires after three years, you never know what the market might look like in five a really shrewd move by Manny Machado when his representation to give them that player option after five

"Containment average of six hundred sixty eight dollars Antonio Brown on his way out of Pittsburgh as expected we get a little bit more into the Manny Machado deal with the Padres. You wanna go watch Carolina, Duke tonight, and Durham you're paying almost three grand. If you want three tickets, you're paying almost forty seven hundred per I'm just throwing it out there. I mean, if you got, you know, you got Tom Dondon type of cash here and Carolina, and you wanna go you can go Tom Dunton, the Carolina Hurricanes majority owner his investment in the Atlanta American football will get into that as well. But I saw story cross yesterday. That I liked more than anything else. I saw yesterday because it's the kind of mentality that I think. Needs to be. The majority mentality in sports in particular in the NBA in particular because it is nothing like Kevin Durant mentality. Now, if you wanna get me going to rant. I've done it far too many times for too many years far too, many minutes and hours of my life. And I'm not gonna do it again. Unless I end up doing, but Damian Lillard superstar guard, the Portland trailblazers and all star over and over again, the face of the franchise was only posted up podcast with Chris Hanes and just made my night. I guess I like this. Why haven't you asked to put in a in a different situation? Knowing the years, you have left in this game knows probably six seven years of fighting trying to get over to hump, you know, even though his heart. I don't want to take my position for granted. You know, I think it it could be worse and worse situations where I'm not valued to wear you. Obviously we all play to win. I wanna win champion are compete to win championship. You know, I learned that it's about so many other things I think a lot of people would tell you just 'cause they go, and they win a was like, oh, we wanna championship. And then they look back and they like, man. This happened because of that this happened because of like my career is over I'm and no the relationships that I'm gonna have them not people who knew outside with him, regardless of I was at the top or controlled artist stuff that I did the right way to my favorite players in the history of the NBA. My all time favorite player is John. Stockton loved. John Stockton grew up a jazz fan because of John Stockton went nuts when he hit a dagger game winning three against the Houston Rockets to get Utah to the NBA finals for the first time I was in Norman in an apartment. "Huge news yesterday, of course, Manny Machado ten year contract. Three hundred million dollars guaranteed. Opt out after five if he wants to take it with the San Diego Padres, which now leaves Bryce Harper. What happens with Bryce Harper? All of the news is about the Phillies. That's the only team that is the giants. The nats. Have the big offer on the table. It seems like it's a matter of win. Not if he signs with the Philadelphia Phillies baseball insider, Jeff passan on how the Machado deal impacts, Bryce. I think Bryce Harper almost sees himself in his own stratosphere. It's almost like Manny Machado was the the baseball man's player this off season. Whereas Bryce Harper is the businessman's, and that's not to say that Bryce Harper isn't a great baseball player himself. But the impact that he can have off the field in sponsorship in marketing in ticket sales in growing the game in whatever city that he's going to be in is truly valuable. And that's what Scott Boris his agent is banking on. I think ultimately when it's all said and done whether it's Philadelphia Washington San Francisco team, we may not even know about still Bryce Harper's probably going to end up with a higher number, but likely tenure do. And now you give Harper tenure deal don't feel as concert. They're both twenty-six and Machado. But there are all of the other issues that you wanna go statistically fine. Let's look at the numbers. Listen to this. This is there. These are their numbers through seven seasons both of them through seven seasons. Both of them twenty six years old. Career average Harper to seventy nine Machado to eighty two pretty close. Average number of home runs per year..

"And he is that what it's going to be like from Chato or is he going to make too many questionable decisions. And caused too many questionable acts where we can't forget about. What are the Padres? Getting. That's what we don't know. But what would help them veteran leadership that USA today's Bob Nightingale says on Spain and Fitz. They don't really have. I think the only concern there is the Padres on have a whole lot of bench leadership. You know, the Yankees have been right there as they play with veterans in Baltimore in Los Angeles. You know to to sell it was going to be the guy who kind of disciplined people around there in LA. No, Adam Jones in in Baltimore. So we'll see you don't have that presence now. So they're not winning. I think it will be interesting. Yeah. It's the richest contract. Of its kind ten years three hundred million dollars. You are investigating investing thirty million bones a year into Manny Machado, and there are a lot of people including our own, Freddie. Coleman on ESPN radio who are suspicious cynical. I think those words fit to say the least Manny Machado is going to disappear because the San Diego Padres are not any good, and I'm understating this sniffy wins last year. Seventy one win the two thousand seventeen sixty eight to two thousand sixteen as a matter of fact, the last winning season for the sandiego Padres was two thousand and ten so you're going to get paid that kind of money if demand Machado, there's no doubt take the money and the tenure contract because for the next two years. The only time we're going to see or hear about you will be on highlights because Abe. Go Padres are not going to be any good for two years three years possibly for years. So take that money and run if you are Manny Machado, and he got that. But don't you have to know Dari nowkhah with your first and last that was pretty Coleman. You heard him last night on Freddie and Fitz him, but don't you have to know? If you're Machado, you're not signing into this deal with any expectations of winning this year and possibly not the next. But I think and I think a lot of people think the Padres will be one of the bigger surprises in baseball. It might be one of those teams that intil September is at least in a wildcard chase. They could be interesting. And by the way, Keith law the SPN zone who I have one thousand percent respect for because the dude knows his stuff says the Padres have the best farm system in baseball, those that think about this if they're in contention. They could if they're in contention at all come the trade deadline, potentially have the pieces to make a massive deal for a big time edition or to to help that team. And maybe all of a sudden they do become a contender this season. First and last podcast, first and last ESPN radio Dory. Noca- with you. "At superior, so I don't know what the trigger was I do not want to say this only comes down the money that we were aggressive or offer. It was extremely competitive. And I know I'm standing right now disappointed that it and get it done. I'd be disappointed to somebody had a family reunion at my expense. And then some baseball team. Yeah. I mean, you get credit for Tryon the White Sox. They acquired his brother-in-law yonder Lonzo. Why wonder how that's going to go one family member doesn't want? You might get rid of the John Jay and outfielder who's like one of his best friends. It didn't work like they they did everything they thought they had to do. They got the band together. Big provided the beverages they had the potato salad. They had the macaroni and cheese. They had the grilled steaks. And yet Manny Machado said I'm good take care of my family, but I'm going over here, and it's thicker than water, but money is figure that all absolutely. But that water out in San Diego, Chicago Santa Anna winds, and if you're gonna play for team, would you be the face of a franchise that's never going to happen. It's a cargo because even if you're the face of the franchise, nobody cares. It's all about the Chicago Cubs in that city. You get a chance to go to the San Diego Padres. And if you even get them to eighty one wins next year, they might built a statue outside of that stadium for Manny Machado. Rick. He was warm about being played by Manny Machado in that situation. Matthew listening on Sirius XM channel eighty eight seven to nine three seven seven six Matthew. Would he have to say about Manny Machado going to the Padres for ten years and three hundred million dollars? Freddie. This reminds me a lot of when Alex Rodriguez five for the Texas Rangers for like two hundred million dollars. We have some good years, but never went to World Series ever really did much Machado. Sandiego down. I know my track record for San Diego. You remember that? Of the charges. Really? Doing much with him. A lot of talent around him. It doesn't it doesn't make any sense. You're exactly right fall. You said, but here's the deal. Someone's gonna throw ten years and three hundred million dollars at me. And I get to live in San Diego. Yeah. Where do I sign up money grab Manny Machado new as a money grab? He knows the San Diego Padres have not had a winning season since two thousand ten he knows that he's going to drop off the face of the baseball earth baseball, which is great bus during the regular season last year. Benny had the dodgers versus the Red Sox. They had not had any buzz at all in the off season outside of the collusion by the owners, not the play free agents along the lines of Bryce Harper Manny Machado earlier than well. He got from the from the San Diego Padres. Now. But you know, what I would have taken the money to Eric hosmer eight years one hundred and forty four million dollars. If you're going to get paid that kind of money why not have it in San Diego? One of America's finest cities where the weather every day in seventy seven and sunny, right? You know, what no one ever says I hear San Diego's. Nice this time of year. No needles. Nice. Every week. Every day. What's by Tony? Tony, Tony it never rains in southern California. It never rains in San Diego. So yeah, I'm with you. It's a money grab it seems to be a win win. But here's the other side of that. It has nothing to do with Bryce Harper. It has nothing to do with Mike trout. It has nothing to do with that kind of money. Manny Machado is about the disappear for the next couple of years because the Padres are not any any good. And as great as he is as great as he's been as great his talent is there's only so much that he can do real quick, Donna Maui. Would he got to say about this situation? Manny Machado, my friend. I think the the happiest person about this has gotta be Bryce Harper. Because. His payday after this one. Is this going to be? Thomas. His pain is going to be enormous. Anyway, I don't think he's getting ten years Bryce Harper Machado contract. He said, yeah, I was going to get that. Anyway. The question is for how many years period in the story. Even the Phillies general manager McClintock. He said this Manny Machado is three hundred million dollar deal. We had a pretty good idea of where this thing was going. If the reports are true, then this contract will see out valuation, and sometimes you have to be willing to walk away. If they're going to sign Bryce Harper. Remember that statement with Phillies general manager mclintock's said about Manny Machado game three hundred million dollars. Sometimes you have to be willing to walk away. It may not be that great for Bryce Harper when it's all said and done in terms of years and that contract that he's looking for..

"These. Just to the first. The portrait ROY what's what's happening, welcome. It's another dish of the short porch, your number one destination that twenty seven time World Series champion near the Yankees. I'm your host hubs along Sammy on the other side of the laptop. Tommy smokes. Tom stability, the costs of cloud. What habit? Who is that new in new intro thing there in my Don, I don't know how I feel about that. It was a little long as all. Yeah. We're new things. Yeah. Trying to no it's fine. I just like a heads up by one of the. Yeah. Should send your what was going on should've. Oh, I am with change. You know, how I how I don't handle you like things as boring as possible. No channel like consistency. Not wearing consistency routine. You don't like things and no curve balls whatsoever. You only fastball header yet. I know the draw. Well, it appears like we are not getting Manny Machado, and I'm not definitively. Putting a no there because he's not another team in Ken Rosenthal seem to think that we're still in it somehow. He's like he's like, I don't believe Machado's is not a Yankee until I seem another uniform on opening day. And I mean, I who I don't know how it worked. But the reason being we signed DIGI LeMay Hugh off from the color Rockies. He's a three time Glover two-time all-star four batting champion. He's pretty much a second baseman in third. They thinking to play first of all the utility guy. Mainly probably second. Think resigned him to two year twenty four million dollar deal. Essentially, I mean, I don't know how old all work if we brought Machado along with all this, and it really wouldn't make any sense. But yeah, we got you. Eight. I mean, I want Machado. I'm still in the camp if they don't get Harper or Machado this off season is a failure of the organization is a joke, and we lead a revolt, but DJ I mean, do you who he is the type of bat that I guess we kind of said we might want. You know, a contact hitter hit two seventy six last year, which was down. Otherwise, he was hitting three hundred every year before the three years before that doesn't strike out a ton that on ball the type hitter that you know, made the Red Sox such a tough out in the playoffs with Waterson scoring position especially so I I don't necessarily hate the move. I hate it. If it means they're choosing him and to whiskey, basically over Machado. They're I hate it. But you know in a vacuum. I don't eat the move because I think there he could play second to spell glacier could play third and. Honestly, I think he's abused. The first base lot. I think this move was made with the idea of him playing first base. I never really played it before. That's the scary is only played eighteen innings their career but six four to fifteen that's first baseman size for he's a gold Glover. He's athletic enough. You figured at the transition would think you can figure it out. If you're an either harsher you can scoop fucking baseball first base. Yeah. I mean, if you're if you're a sure handed good fielding second baseman shortstop. There's no reason you should be able to do I typically you can't do first base because maybe we're like five eleven six foot, but he has the size to do that plus athleticism. So I don't see any reason why he can't play first base if Greg bird if Greg bird is Greg bird or hurt, Luke. Void fizzles out. I could see detail Mayhew being there everyday first baseman. So I don't hate that move. And doesn't mean they can't get Machado publi unless they. And I couldn't have. No what if she currently? Really? So so the Phillies seems to be over the last twenty four forty eight hours. They are the front runners from Chato apparently they're meeting and when Harper Harper they're meeting Vegas when great with him. It was like a five hour discussion. I think they're gonna give him like a like an eleven twelve year deal. I think that's what's coming. I think they bloom away. Like, let's go they had the whole quote before the all star. We're gonna spend stupid money. I think this is the Harper's got which leaves Machado to the White Sox. And it's like they're kind of bidding gets themselves right now and the journey that mystery team, which I don't what if we're the team, by the way, what is that?.

When you got in a fight in school, did you go get Jason to go beat up people when you got in a fight in school? Not that the warriors did by getting Kevin Durant. They went and got their big brother. I yes, but so did the rest of the league would have like that big brother to they just weren't able to to make it happen. I think what happened is we have a cultural change in America where professional athletes have said, I just watched a show called NBA love story or basketball love story that athletes have said, Amen. They're coming to see us. They're not coming to see the owners in GM's and players are like they want to take control of their lives, and they don't want to be guilted in by the way. They don't want to be guilted into go into a good team. The owners would like the players to be guilted and go into a good team. I always say this Kevin Durant. He walked into the league as. A good kid. The owner said, I'll be in Seattle forever. An hour later there in Oklahoma City. The GM said, I'll keep three together an hour later hardens gone. I mean, Kevin Durant, got lied to about six times and finally said, oh, I get this league. Take care of yourself. Listen, I believe in hard work and all that and that's fine. But Kevin Durant wasn't the first person to change teams, so we're really going to get into this. It was. It was pre LeBron Ron just made it famous because did it on TV show. All right. So Cody bellinger's the real deal is walk off single. In the bottom of the thirteenth. Innings scored Manny Machado to give the dodgers a two one win over the brewers. He put an end to the five hour marathon to tied at two games apiece felon and made ridiculous diving catch in the tents. So let's talk last night about many Machado. Yeah, he's the only dodger hitting by the way that play at first base. There was never one second of fear of injury. These this is a professional athlete. He drags his foot over a guy's calf, tolin the unwritten rules based mom. This is not a millennial thing. No, I just think Machado is Draymond green. He's here to get in your head. He's in the brewers heads. He's the only guy hitting and further record. He's a free agent and the Yankees in cubs are going to get into a bidding war and I don't care, doesn't run hard to I. There's one hundred sixty two games in Manny. Machado is one of the rare baseball players. He plays all of them..

"That's pretty significant drop often and is well. Well, if you look at the arm numbers based on not just defensive runs saved, but also use the are his arm. For some reason. I haven't investigated this and I don't know if you have his really dropped off his historically according to defensive, runs saved. Prior to this season, his arm was plus seventeen runs this season. He's at negative six and according to Altemus zone writing over his career. Prior to this season, his arm was plus seventeen runs in this year. He is at negative five. So I don't know what has actually happened with Bryce Harper's arm. But that is a another contributor here because it's not just a matter of his range. It's that his arm is just not been as much of a as much of a weapon. And it's yeah, I can tell you. He only has one assist for whatever that's worth last year. He had eight east out at thirteen and twenty thirteen. So I don't know if maybe there's something wrong with Bryce. Harper's arm could be noise, I guess. But it's definitely a concern as evaluators consider whether they would rather have Manny Machado. Yeah. Unfortunately, we can't look up arm strength rate without. Deeming Mike petrello and asking him to send it to us. But I would guess that that probably says the same sort of thing. So that's a concern. Obviously, his bat is the big draw, and that is what teams will be bidding on. But we know that they consider the player holistically, and so if Bryce Harper is a bad outfielder now that is something that teams will take into account still going to get a lot of money we can try to. So at baseball reference, they have some additional numbers here. So let's just see if these passed muster, so we know that Bryce Harper's assists are down. Now there are direct assists and then there are secondary. Assists secondary assists are Missouri the less delightful assist. Nobody cares about a secondary SIS. That's like you throw the ball cutoff guy in then he throws somebody who nobody cares. So in twenty sixteen, when Bryce Harper had the opportunity to hold a base runner based on about ball, he held the base runner fifty eight percent of the time. The Lee. The average is lower than it last year he held the base runner fifty one percent of the time in this year, forty four percent of the time. So there's some evidence that runners also take him or Kansas against Bryce Harper. So yeah, there's there's something here to investigate and some some number of front office. I don't know if they're going to be interns or just endless people, but as teams go into free agency, every team who's interested in the Bryce Harper market is probably going to have at least one person whose project is to investigate Bryce Harper czar. And then at the end of the day, the owner is just gonna give him four hundred million dollars for listening to not going to matter. So have fun with your winter research projects. Amls people not going to matter, but at least we're curious is right now as we talk about this on the air. Yeah. All right. Cody sends a linked video, and this is video from a brewers game where as he says, make me stockists gets in the way of a pickoff throw. And the resulting carom allows Eric Fame's to score from home. And Cody says my hypothetical is this. What if a player intentionally dove at pickoff throws with the intention of headbutting the ball out play. With the same as the pitcher, throwing the ball directly out of play at allowing runners to advance how many times could a player do this before pitchers stop trying to pick them off? Do you think anyone could successfully head, but the ball out of play without taking one to the face and I can link to this video for anyone who wants to see it. It's just the stock is diving back into I and the throw is wide. So it hits him instead of getting to the glove. It's certainly not intentional, but does make you think what if you tried to get in front of pickup throws instead of just trying to get back to the bag, I don't have. So having having put my head in the way of at least one fast moving baseball before in my life. I'm not fraud by the prospect of doing more..

"So I mean, that's what's coming from that. But the other story of the game was Manny Machado? All right. Where's he going. Jeannie Martinez was on Instagram, live with him before the game, and he was Graham. Live was basically asking them shot said somewhere that I can't say on this podcast due to us being professional, but nonetheless pretty much in short had no coup where he was going. All right. John Hayman and everyone else pretty much did though. I mean, it was pretty much the dodgers where the team of the day is far who was going to be trained for Machado. All right. I mean, there was a report about the Orioles dealer in place. Everyone was trying to figure out that team, but like I said, the dodgers named kept popping up, insured fans getting traded to the dodgers. All right. I mean, this is a win now move to the dodgers obviously. They've made it, they've gone to the playoffs. They've made it far, but they always seem to come up short last year. They made it to the World Series, ended up losing to the Astros. And I think this is a point where I mean the dodgers are looking over on the AL side of things. You're seeing Boston the best team in the majors right now. Ocalan absolute terror, most wins ever before the all-star break. Okay. They're looking good. The Yankees. Okay. They're four and a half games back in the Red Sox nonetheless. Got third best record in baseball. All right. And then you got the Astros team he lost to in the World Series last year and got the second best record of base in baseball. Okay. I mean, it's ridiculous how much better these ale teams are than these animal teams. Okay. Best record in the NFL yet to fifty five thirty eight with the clips. Okay, the aides who are not even a wildcard team currently fifty five and forty two. All right. The Indians who are fifty two and forty three and probably the worst division in the AL would only be a half game back in the Phillies. And have came back dodgers. I mean these teams, I mean if they're expected to make, it's the World Series. That's great novel, but you're gonna need the firepower to compete with these teams out here. Okay, it's ridiculous. Highlights at the as who aren't even wildcard team would have the best record in the end up. All right. We'll second best considering the fact that the cubs were skirt less losses. Okay. So, I mean, this is a good move by the dodgers, the move they needed to make. All right. It's not just the point of getting to the World Series as if you're gonna win it. You're going to need to compete with these Red Sox with these Astros on what these Yankees are..

"Back to baltimore they couldn't even signed mark to share their this so anytime become saw high paid free agent i'm sorry but if it comes down to is many machado going to play for the yankees or the orioles and we look at the lineup that he could join and obviously the yankees are going to outbid whoever is is in on machado i i think i think the auriol's are smart enough to say let's take a look at these will save five packages and if one of them is like the one a world close equivalent to what a package might be coming from in the division from the new york yankees i would think that the that the baltimore orioles would say you know what fuck that we're not giving you manny machado because the idea is if i give jeered at there's one girl out there and you're going to take her out on a date and i'm going to take her out on a date and you're gonna give me an extra day an extra day to shore what life is like role with deby good luck growth probably go find another girl because there's no shot she's coming back to you in an happening and you should feel that say white and i think that's exactly what the orioles would identify is we don't want to give this guy the opportunity to see what life is like on the other side of that bins knowing that our return might not be what we needed to be especially giving up a guy that could potentially be blocking us for the next bite yolk here's the deal if machado goes in signs of the yankees and the orioles naturally to have that happen would have to relinquish machado either via trade or let him preposterously leading a walk at the end of the year right the orioles are going to be so bad and irrelevant that whatever the yankees are doing is they're not being blocked by anything like it would be the most orioles move of all time to wait a full twelve months beyond when they should have traded machado and then when they finally do trade machado to start taking into consideration things like well we don't want to set up this 95 win team to win ninety nine games while we're winning 65 every year and we don't want to take the best package like they need to take.
