"Came in from football because obviously watching the documentary talk about how important football was and is to you. Did it surprise you at first the kind of the politics of wrestling where you did you have any idea about that? Is there such a thing in football the same way as wrestling or is football much more of the team? If you're good, you're good. Tell us some of the differences in pro football pro wrestling for you. Well, football, you know, is based upon performance on the field. It's a numbers game, right? If you're fast enough, if you're strong enough, if you're successful enough on the field in certain situations, then you play. That doesn't necessarily hold true in the wrestling business. And there's politics in every endeavor. Whatever walk of life you attend or take part in, there's going to be a bit of politics. And I was quite gullible in the beginning. I like to listen to everybody and I assume that everybody was pointing me in the proper direction. And it's just in life that's just not always the case. And I learned the hard way and, you know, but it is what it is. I mean, you know, it's a cutthroat world and I grew up a lot in that business as you were witness to. When did you start feeling kind of the momentum rolling? Because like we said, the initial streak was still one of the coolest times in pro wrestling. Right out of the gate or did people start getting into quickly or did it take some time? I think it took time. I think it was a momentum based angle. I think it gained momentum each and every week. I truly believe that after Colorado Springs against Raven for the U.S. championship, that was that was the catalyst. That was the springboard, I believe. I knew it was a reality at that point. I can't really remember a lot of other milestones other than the Hogan match, no question, and Dallas at Halloween havoc and yeah, you know, but I think that the U.S. championship against the clock was the one. I remember that. That was kind of put you on the map for real, you know? When you're talking about the explosiveness of Goldberg and obviously it was fun watching some of your football clips because I had never seen it before, just how much of a killer you were on the field, but that explosiveness came from football to wrestling. The spear in 2022, probably the most one of the most used moves ever in wrestling. But from what I can recall, you basically were the first to use this move. Your idea, what did that come from? Let's talk about the spear. Jamie walking out against Manny Fernández. Jamie says, what's your finish? I said, I'm finished. What is that? I don't have a finish. And he goes, whatever you do, do something impactful that people are going to remember. So I get in the ring, Manny and I are circling and I say, Manny, do you trust me? He goes, yeah. I said then spread then at the finish, tuck your head, spread your legs and kiss your ass goodbye. Hold on. And I did it. And to me, it was a natural move. And I went in the back and everybody's mouths were open, hitting the floor, going, whatever, do that every single time. And I'm like, oh, shit. That's awesome 'cause that's me. That's who I am. So to move, I didn't have to learn and to move. I didn't have to act in it's a move that put me on the map in the football business. And I'm just thankful that something so simple translated. And how do you feel now when you see it used quite often? You know how I feel, it makes me want to, but you know, hey, they say imitation is the best form of flattery of the Gilbert thing. Stephanie, everybody and their mother uses the spear strategically placed, you know, as we were competing against WWE and before I went over there, people started using it and got when I got there, you know, it was a commonly used move, but I don't know, man. All I can say is anybody and everybody can emulate it, but nobody can do it like me. Right. With that explosiveness, you know, what did you think of Gilbert when he first appeared? Again, you know how I felt about it. I wanted to rip his face off. But that just made me understand what the wrestling business is all about. You know, I mean, the way I look back on it now, I'm ecstatic that they were able to give this guy a job. That's how I've broken my life down. It's the good that can come of actions that have happened in the past. And the way I looked at it in the beginning, like I said, I was pissed off about it. Because you're always very much not wanting to have anything to do with comedy. That was something that you always had when we had our issues. I'm not doing any comedy. You didn't like that aspect of wrestling whatsoever. No, I love that aspect. I just didn't think that it would was any there was nothing that I could gain from it as Goldberg the character. At that point in my career, I wasn't open to a lot of different things. And I mean, you were witness to it and I had to protect everything that I had, whether it was things that came out of my mouth or moves that I had in the ring. I felt as though my back was against the wall all the time. And I had to protect everything and everything. I mean, anything and everything that I did. And whether it was it was the case or whether it was like demons that are coming up behind me, I just, I felt as though it was me against the world at times. Was that people in your ear telling you that sort of things as well? The higher up guys? A 100%. A 100%. I mean, there were a lot of things that played into it, but I think me fabricating it in my mind was probably the biggest fact. Yeah. No, I remember the one week I showed up for whatever pay per view it was. And they had me wrestle with, it wasn't even Gilbert. It was another guy that was doing a Goldberg kind of gimmick. And it was Terry Taylor. He goes, beat this guy and pretend he's Goldberg, and I was like, all right. And so we did it. And then the next couple days you found out about it, you were really angry at me. You're like, oh yeah, I heard about this, Jericho. I took things so personally, man. And it's a business. It's a fabricated business, you know? Right. I was a football player, man. That's me. I'm a meathead. I'm a very simplistic person. And I take things way too personally. I really do. I have my entire life.

"Last night. I thought it was amazing. Were you happy with it? Yeah, man. It would have been nice if there were a couple people that said something positive about my wrestling career and I don't know. I tend to believe what people say and I guess I'm really horrible, but you know, hey, at the end of the day, it was a great walk down memory lane for my family, man. You know, I think you already know and a handful of people know what a Family Guy I am and now the world knows. And so it's good to get it out there and it's good to show people that I'm not that fire breeding dragon 24/7. But I will say this though man, you've always been kind of a self deprecating type of guy. We've known each other a long time. Lots of trials and tribulations, which we can discuss. But I think that you kind of estimate your wrestling career. Just to me, I mean, if I would have been asked to do that and obviously they wouldn't ask me now because I'm on the side of the fence, but you're very unique and one of the most explosive performers with your wrestling style that people really related to you. I don't understand what the problem is with that. Okay, you didn't do a lot of holds and technical stuff. But you never had to. Well, you know me, man. I always wanted to be something different. I didn't want to be that chain wrestling guy. I always thought that, you know, I didn't want to fall down that wormhole of being cast like everybody else. So I thought I'd brought something completely different to the business that hadn't been seen before. And you know me, I always want to be the best at anything and everything I do. And so you always hear the, well, he can't wrestle more than 5 minutes. He can't take. Well, you know what? I never, I never wanted to be that guy. You guys are the ones who go out and perfect that craft. I was the explosion. You know, I was the exception to the rule. And so I felt as though if I fell into that mold, I would just be like just everybody else. Sometimes it's not a bad thing, but I wanted to be different. I wanted to be something that people had to sit on the edge of their seat and pay attention to every second, let alone every minute. So I'm human. I hear rumblings and with the forefront of the Internet. You see it all the time, but you know, people's opinions are like assholes. So I'd like to think that I carved out a niche and that a few people fall into that category, you know? No, and I agree with you on that. Now, when you first came into the business, was this something that you came up with or were you told beat them in 20 seconds or how do they kind of the whole concept of Goldberg begin? I think it was a day and time where people fortunately were listening to the public. I don't think it was anything that anyone wasn't foreshadowing. It wasn't a plan written in stone. I think it was it was fluid. It was something that changed every week. Gotcha. I don't know who came up with it, whether it was hainan or tanay, or sivani, I don't know, but you know, I do believe that they listened to the fans and they gave them what they wanted. When you first came in, I recall, did you have a different name other than Goldberg at first? You're like the hybrid or something like that? I wanted to be the hybrid. That was it. Bill gold GOLD. That's pretty entertaining down in you remember the tapings down in Orlando. And I remember before going out my first time against, I think it was Manny Fernández, which I do have on video, by the way. Wow. I went out, I was getting ready to go out of gorilla at the time, and they said, what do you want us to call you? And I'm like, call me the hybrid, and they're like, we can't do that because if you ever sell merchandise, you know, there might be a trademark issue. And I'm like, you know what? I don't foresee myself ever selling anything. So just call me the hybrid. So they called me Bill gold. Yeah, it was pretty. When did the actual Goldberg? Because now Goldberg is such a monumental name, right? It's got such power behind it. But at first, it sounds like, you know, a Jewish accountant or something that Goldberg? Yeah, I put up a smokescreen, man. You know, the main reason why I did it of who I am. I'm proud of my Jewish heritage and in growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where there weren't many prominent Jewish sports figures walking around, let alone in the national spotlight. I just wanted to give little kids, you know, something to look forward to, something something against the grain, something different than the norm. So I worked on my heart like a shield and I'm extremely proud of the decision I made back there. Well, it ended up being a very powerful name for sure. Absolutely. But when you first came in, how was it with the other guys in the locker room? Because obviously you ended up becoming one of the biggest stars in WCW working with Hogan and we'll talk about that. And ended up with hall and Nash, but were you accepted right away because in wrestling, especially at that time frame, there was always a little bit of like, oh, there's the football guy, what's he doing? You're hilarious because you can answer all these questions. You were there. You're just teeing me up. But the best analogy I can give you is that I was like a college football player walking into a frat party. Nobody wanted me there. At least that's how I film, right? You know, at the end of the day, football is a big team, little me, you know, sport. Right. And that's all I ever knew. And wrestling is a business. And whether you see people coming in as attributes to your roster or whether you see them as detriments to your career, is that they're taking a spot of

"World champion. Ric flair defeating the united states. Champion magnum ta. And they go an incredible fifty six minutes. We also would see dusty rhodes fight. Telly blanchard to double count out a little shorter match. You'll five minutes thirty five seconds But you get a little workout that night. Twelve minutes and fifty two seconds when you and only are going to take on thunderbolt and pass widely you ultimately get the get the pin over widely but man a stadium show may twenty seventh. What do you remember about this wrestling. Three rivers wow. Wow wow wow. They were really starting to test waters. Say if you go to a stadium. i'm sure it was cut way down and all that stuff in the ring was closer to home plate and to where you had the seats You could cut off. Flack half the field or two thirds of the field if you really wanted to create that environment It was a lot more animate but still. I don't know what cost would have been involved. But i know that it looked good on the where you are on tv and you were promoting it. Three rivers stadium a jim kaga promotion. Just it felt like if you were sitting on watching tv. Hey this is big you know maybe arena hold them. You know what thoughts were going. What what thoughts were being put out there. That they wanted the audience to thank I dunno they must have had a deal this far as what the rat was on. That stadium is it fun for you to wrestle an outdoor venue like this. I mean three rivers pretty iconic stadium as a sports fan. Is this a treat for you or is it at this point just another day at the office. Yeah i loved it. was there for you. Know being outdoors. You know the sound went straight up and disappeared so there were some tricks with the way people would react and all those things plus if you had it like you know in may. I'm sure it was kinda warm. They're going to have a big stadium show in the summer They july middle of july and only an hour. We're gonna wrestle Buzzsaw dick slater which we knew that was going to be our money because that would be a main event it would be as a main event or whatever towns you're in unless dusty was there you would be right underneath it but i got very excited. Plus ditch later was model. He was the guy that you know. That made me along with bob. Morton junior wanna be wrestler and really just fell in love with it and so that would have been the first piece this television of shooting that. It's fun to think about that as a potential match for you guys you know in my opinion buzz sawyer and dick slater are too rough and tumble guys just like you and only or is it a match where it's too much of the same thing you know. They say styles make fights these days in mma and Maybe you do need some compare and contrast but it feels like that's like old school down and dirty ass kicking almost bill. Watts style matchup right. Well without taking this wrong way. The variable that was in that match. Had i just wanted to stay on my feet and slugging around like the other guys dickey was a little more you know bouncing up and down. He had no problem taking some bumps buzz. Only were slugging. I can't tell you how to be in front of all these fans and the people of miami and two weeks of the folks in texas and a good old charlotte folks man. They have turned out and they are having a great time. It is so good see. It's so fun to watch wrestling with fans. And i know that sounds silly but i mean it was never intended to be a medium where there's no interaction so now. The fans are back where they belong at live wrestling events. I at home and enjoying it more than ever. I can't imagine how feels from a competitor's standpoint to be there live in person on well it is a participation sport. Wrestling is not a spectator sport. It is meant for you to be if you wanna get out of your chair and stand up if the people behind you don't mind raise all the hill. He had been in and out of there for years and years and years and was well known and that was fine for him to stand in the middle of the ring and bounce around but when it got kinda got time to get mine. He was a little reluctant and tom. I thought well the guy's a little difficult here refused to get ate up hours far enough along. In my knowledge you know of the way the business is supposed to be in the way things should be and all that at the tom. I felt like maybe taken advantage of them and he is saying that. I'm more than happy to accommodate him but a mouse my time and he just you couldn't get him off his feet and as it turned out the more i worked with him the more figured out he wasn't able Roll tomor already old timer. He was injured staying because it could not be his thing. And then i started to look at it in a different light. Because i only did just scoop him up and bumping and slamming a couple of times without his consent or knowledge and him getting back to his feet was such an ugly thing. And structured the match differently and i kept shorter and when it was time to get mine i could just beat him up a little bit with him on his feet in a corner. But you're trying and the arm bar here chemmy up other the precursor to that always was would out tag only have the arm pulled straight out where he couldn't get out of the way only would come off the top with a big me. The only mistake you can make or the biggest mistake you can make a tag match is to have two singles matches go on on during a tag match and i bet you anything. That's what happened that night just for lack of planning and the fact that we weren't the team and the fact that we were thrown together and i guess we were probably just having to single matches a tag match and that's a mistake but you learn through you know. Time and effort and water under the bridge was the right thing to do You go back and look at your career early on and you see a lot of mistakes now. It's a double shot cannaday though. Because you're also in pittsburgh working with sam houston and sam houston and eighty five is He's still a little wet behind the ears. Shall we say. But he's coming into his own fans are with him. He's a typical white meat. Baby face the girls are all about him and it felt like a year later he was going to be poised for a big big push put. Eventually he mary's baby doll and has run with the wwf. And i think a lot of people look at sam houston now in hindsight and say man what could have been. Let's say you made. He sold really well and he pulled the audience into the fact that. Hey this guy's getting his ass kicked we might cheer for him or this going to be over pretty quick and that was you know pretty much the mentality of of young baby faces. They wanted they should make the audience won't to cheer to assist them in what was going on because they're getting there has handed to him. Let's let's talk about your next bow here. Hey are they getting the match. The b match or the c. Match did you have some sort of a formula that you and manny would rely on. Put together your matches. When you're working so often i don't think we were that advanced and it worked enough to actually have an a. b. or c. match. But after you've worked with a guy you know back in those days ten twelve fifteen times in a lot of those were days in a row. You would just have a little bit of a routine down to the point. That if that if i grabbed you in a headlock and i said hey dropped down twice back you know. Seven eight nine weeks after about that ninth week. When i grabbed that headlock. You knew what we're doing because of where it was in the match you knew it was. I didn't have to call the whole thing. That makes sense. If you know we were just in a spot that you know. Maybe i had grabbed an arm to start often he reversed our versus back and took him down by the hair and he nipped up and gave me a big. Maybe that was the lead in spot to that matched bigger spot. So we did that. He knew without me said a word where we were in the match and we just continued on with our routine. Now a lotta times. Something would happen. Maybe they wouldn't react to the backhand or they would really react to the backhand just on the fly. You would just switch it up because you got a different reaction for what you were shooting for or expected it was still conrad i. It's it's always ban that when the businesses at its best. It's an ad lib situation where you're really just go on out there and rocking back and forth and fighting and whatever guy gives you you take advantage of it and vice versa. And that's when the business was really the best you know. There was an ongoing conversation. Ever in any match. That was in because it. Just if you're talking that much then you're not really listening to the audience and that's the key. It felt like to me. You could just tell that. There was a line drawn in the sand between the wwf in jim. Crockett promotions and Jim crockett acquiring that television. It felt like okay. We're fixing to go to war. And now like i said i wished i had this the exact dates. But you're talking about of a sudden you had the midnight. Express the rock and roll express. Yet arn anderson buddy landale The garbage came aboard during that period. And you had and. I'm sure i'm missing some some guys but you had a pretty good chunk of talent and a couple a month period. Go to work for jim. Crockett and you could just feel it. Insensitive in the woods new to blood and and you just knew things were lining up and fiction interesting. How about this manny. It's a tv taping for worldwide and they ran a little promotion there where the first five hundred fans in attendance received a free t shirt new probably needed one of those. Because you're working double duty here. You're gonna team with buddy landale to take on same houston danny brown. Of course you guys are on the a side of that one. But then there's a dark match with you and manny fernandez and man you and manny our heating up in a hurry and you know the thing about that. Dark match served a lot of purposes you could announce it to the public as something that they could be sure they were gonna get in those days they got it and it would be considered a main event and you know may just getting there getting put in that spot it from a positioning. It made you look like oh okay. They are going to go with sky. And you know man. I clicked pretty pretty quickly and that became a thing for for a while. Yeah for a while indeed. The next day you're in raleigh at dorton arena and once again working with manny. You pick up the win there. The following day. You're off a rare off-day but on april fifth. You're once again. Working with manny fernandez. This time to a no contest in columbia south carolina. You're at township auditorium. We've spoken a little bit about dorton arena and how much i love the arena. In how cool it looks. But tony shirvani just said it was hot and it was a dump and it was measurable Did you have any favorite buildings in the crockett territory. A building in particular. Where you just knew. I like the town i like the arena. I like the people like the accommodations. Any of that. stick out. Well they usually go to were the ones that were close. You know charlotte obviously grange borough. All those that were close. Columbia was one that that i favored because of the way it was built. You know it was one of those arenas that you know it was like built almost straight up lack. The seats in the upper deck. Were like almost over the rain and that was a cool environment. Loved richmond because you know that was a big arena here for big shows and held a lot of people. Lot of lot of great buildings Acoustics were always a good thing if you were an arena. That had some really good acoustics and everything sounded loud and you know because the noise go straight up there was. There was a slight delay so when it was a full it was just a funky atmosphere. But you know some of the crock in those days especially when we first got their business was not the best yet so they would opt to go to smaller arenas especially for television and for me. I like to sweat anyway sweater. I'm one of those guys. That loves to sweat. When i wanna sweat but i can't stand it when i don't obey. You're one of those guys. Oh yeah so you know being on that. Tv and having a good sweat going it was just conducive. And and you know i think the fans even you know for those towns once they gotta sweat and they looked around and realized they were soaked. Dan hey what are you going to do about it. Let's go ahead and have a good time so it made for great atmosphere wanna mention Tv the next day april sixth year at the wcbs studios and It's interesting because this is the very first episode that is promoted by jim. Compared to a normal tag it gives you a chance to to have the opportunity that other than one guy sitting on the floor and not getting that experience and stay in the loop to all guys being involved in the match and you can never get enough reps. Get enough match time. You know when you're out in our industry Even though we were working in those days every single day still the tv exposure you know was incredible and It was just a different different scenario. Six-man tags aren't. I don't know if i mentioned enough top at this is one of the first. Tv matches that you're going to be on on this card as we watched the show. You're taking on sam. Houston here you. And i were talking beforehand. This wasn't your first televised match. But one of the one of one of the first few For sure here of eighty-five yeah. It could have been second debuted and broke kids arm and manny fernandez. Kinda got into my business. And i had to give him. What's what's four. And i left him lay on and i was.
