"That was my moment now interviews analysis and everything going on in the world of foxy. When you have talent you are given another chance. Here's chris mannix all right joining me this week. One of my favorite people in boxing. He is the former heavyweight title challenger radio personality. You can hear him. At the fights which airs every monday and friday on the sirius. Xm fight nation channel. Is the great gerry cooney. How are you jerry. Lynn cranky cranky. Everything is oh. I feel old and cranky. No i'm great. I'm so grateful. I'm i'm in the business i love. I get to come on the radio face now. So i can do the radio so beautiful and i listen i break down the fights. Tell the truth in a lot of you. Don't like maybe some of them. But i tell the truth i mean. How can you have a guy like joshua heavyweight champion three belts. He's fighting lusa sokaia. Faster guy good talented boxer and try and outbox him. You gotta you gotta after two seven three veronica say well. It's not working. Forget what forget the plan. Go fight him heavyweight champion the world. Can you believe that can't believe it. I was like shocked. And if he got usage body he could've taken them out of that. Believe i agree. That was the second time in four fights where i've seen anthony joshua not use his physical tools in the way that other big heavyweights have especially in recent memory wladimir klitschko lennox lewis and tyson fury. I think operates as one of the smarter. Big man in the game where he leans on you. He uses every inch of that six foot nine frame and every pound in the two hundred fifty plus whatever he's carrying at that time. Yeah but you know look crystal me tell you. He makes the guys box them. You fight. tyson fury. It's not like maybe i'm going to get to the body just around. I got to get into the body and land wanted to the next time we wanted to to handle come down. Did this other things to do than box. A great box. That's usa did to joshua you can't do it. You gotta do something different. And if you have no corner telling you that that's pathetic at this level of the game i agree. I couldn't agree more with that assessment. How many how often jerry when you watch today's heavyweights. Do you wonder how you would have fared against said heavyweight. Yeah i mean listen i. I'd love to fight made mistakes. I was drinking and partying in my heyday. The not knocked out. Norton did i know my career ended yet night. Had i had someone. Grammy by the amish. They kuni. I don't know if i got scared of success. Or you know my upbringing. Whatever was had. I had somebody come on. Kuni is important now. I could have done some great things. How did i got a rematch with homes right away. I learned so much that night in fighting homes. I could've taken that into the second find. It could have been different but this is the life so what happened. So i save my.

"They end tool more ways to win. This is boxing with chris manning who somebody punched him in the face. Joshua is composed and ferocious spanish. Your watch this happy hosted by s. Is chris mannix. That was my moments now with interviews analysis and everything going on in the world of boxing. When you have talent you are given another chance fierce. Chris mannix teddy. Atlas joins me now teddy longtime boxing trainer. Commentator has a terrific podcast of his own called the fight with teddy atlas also does great charity work with this foundation. Which won't ask him about a little bit later in the show teddy. Good to see a man. How's everything going good. See you because everything's everything's going good considering we're living in a crazy world right now. Are you know crazy in a lot of ways. But we're here and grateful to be here and grateful that have family around me. Yeah no question. I wanted to talk to you. Because i'm still kind of buzzing over what we saw with. Anthony joshua and alexander. Ucf and you spent part of your career a big part of your career training working with heavyweights. You work with michael moore. Of course alexander. Pevec in more recently. Just tell me what you were seeing when you watched joshua fight lucic you know. I was lucky enough to predict like mickey the great nikki used to say even a blind squirrel finds an aide corn once in a while so i was lucky enough to predict. Who's going to win that. Fight on my podcast and do a fight plan to greg down. But so i saw what i thought i would say to be quite frank. I saw a new civic a more complete fight. More developed complete fight more dimensional but as long a guy mentally that may surprise some people. Maybe i don't know to hear me say that. But i saw a guy that is i believe swung mentally than than joshua i mean. I don't think that you would have saw joshua fall. Apart the way or i should say i don't think you would have found found those two four part. The way that joshua did against release had time you know mentally physically you know in in all the dimensions that he did just like. I think quite frankly furious mentally strong a guy than than dion to out. So i i sense that all when i break down and fight i try to look at all dimensions and i also saw a guy who knows how to win. A lot of people pooh-poohed me. When when i made that a big deal on my podcast out a win. But what about his left. What about the right. What about what about the right hand powell. What about the side. Yeah i get it but Some people know how to win better than others and he even tangibly physically showed that because ouza guy ahead three nuts in the my caught. Some of those crazy judges. I don't know. I don't know what they're doing but i can only speak for myself. He was edry nothing. And then i saw joshua catch up and he slowly started catching up. He even the fight up but then every time. He defied up the man who knows how to win. Mr music went ahead the next round. He didn't let to go by get into bank with a momentum. Would've got on the wrong side either. Let that happen why he knows how a win. That's why and i. I also saw right from the beginning. Chris the difference to me. I made a note on my scorecard. I said it's a difference right here. First round the of one guy snapping it out the other guys pushing it out. You guess what you don't need teddy atlas to tell you the guy snapping it out is probably gonna do better and And it also. The jeb is a light detector for me in boxing because when a guy pushing jeb. He's telling you he. He's looking for one punch. He's telling you you don't mean to tell you that. But that's that's what he's telling you. It's a polygraph tests. He's telling you yeah. I'm only looking for one punch. And that's where i'm really got my conscience. I'm really not sure all the areas. I'm not really together and all the other areas. And that's what he was telling me and that's what he was telling whose it was more born that i'm just looking for the right hand and i'm going to land and i'm gonna win and oh i hope i'm gonna win and ewsweek was snapping it out controlling a guy with the jam and to me. A lot of things came afterwards. I get it but That was that was the concentration of the fight that was those the core of the fight right there and then of course like i would always say on. Espn you know. You set the table with the jab. Then you eat with the power punch he did. He set the table. Ninety eight with the left hand you know. And i thought he could've knock them out. I'll be honest with you. But i i thought he played. It's a smart. I if you listen to him i believe is an honest guy. He listened to his going. I believe he did and they said played sates. Don't go for the knockout. The guy still does have to right here and we did. And so i just saw. That's what i saw her more complete guy a more constant guy a guy on a win in a guy who caesar jeff to top away part of the success. Teddy as you. Well know of any fighter in any fight is the strategy. They have going into the fight. Joshua came in at one of the lightest weights of his career. He came in looking to seemingly to my is looking to box more with that. Bully him around the ring. What did you think of the strategy joshua employed in this fight. i think that is representatives of way. He is mentally after the louise fight. He lost a lot of his confidence in laws. He never got back. Humpty dumpty fell down into a million pieces and you know what he never quite got never quite. I don't think he got quite put back together. Again it's a polygraph test. It's telling you that you know he. He doesn't believe in certain dimensions us to believe it within himself. You know he. He's not so sure about being the biggest guy anymore. now now. it's more about being careful now. It's more about being safe. Now is more about are getting hurt you know and and win a fight. His thoughts thinking those dimensions. Guess what he's got a problem is he's got a pi. It's like if you will gunslinger back in old days. The old west you know and you made a living doing that new you start worrying about getting shot you probably it game ideal off the game my little because guess what that's the business you're it and and you better not show you better not wear it on your sleep. And he showed it. He thought by coming in that light. I believe again that he's going to be he's thinking going in that. Hey i'm i gotta be careful. I got a you know. I gotta be as nothing. Wrong would be more responsible. I teach guys to be more responsible to be better defensively. That's great but this is a little different does went into the mental terrain. A little bit the the the inner workings of a fighter. The.

"Ways to win. This is boxing with chris manning. Somebody punched him in the face. Joshua is composed and ferocious spanish. Your watch this hosted by s. Is chris mannix. That was my moments now with interviews analysis and every thing going on in the world of boxing when you have talent you are given another chance. Here's chris mannix all right. Welcome back to another episode of boxing with chris. Mannix part of the volume sports podcast network. Pretty quiet weekend in boxing so why not bring in one of the least quiet people. In all of boxing. Lou dibella longtime boxing promoter boxing broadcaster boxing television producer. He joins me and we talk about all the big picture topics in boxing from judging two fighters getting vaccinated to the taffy. Molo pez george campus. Fight we get into the various broadcast networks. That are having various degrees of success. And if luke could promote one fighter from this young crop of top guys who would he pick great conversation with luda bella as always best way to support the podcast get over at apple. Podcasts post a comment leave a rating. It's simple it's easy. It's free is the best way to make sure that we keep doing this podcast week after week. That's it all right onto the show. Slow weekend in boxing. We were supposed to have the deontay wilder tyson fury three showdown in las vegas. That was scrapped weeks ago. Of course because tyson theory came down with kobe. Nineteen there's an interesting fight on saturday with joe joyce heavyweight contender. He's back in action. But it's relatively quiet in the world of boxing. So i figured i'd tackle some big picture. Topics here on this podcast. Do better to tackle them with. But one of my favorite podcasts guests guy that gets irrationally angry for absolutely no reason who makes phone calls to reporters the middle of the night. S- just loves and hates boxing. In equal measure. The great lou dibella president of dibella entertainment. What's up blue. It's a little bit of a double edged sword row because you guys call me in the middle of night regularly. I that's fair but there's equal amounts coming out coming out the going in. I mean there. There are fewer fewer ways in boxing. Entertain yourself taking advantage of the few left. That's that's fair. all right lou. I wanna talk to tackle a few subjects here. I wanna go back to this past weekend because this is still newsy. It's it's i'll explain why it's newsy in a minute. Still we had a good fight between branka stagno and your malchow low in texas costano charles over the undisputed one hundred fifty four pound championship of back and forth type flight that it looked like estonia was controlling the early rounds. Charlotte made a late surge in the final three. It ended in a draw. Which would have been okay. I guess except for the one scorecard submitted by nelson vasquez what wants seventeen one. Eleven in layman's terms. He added nine rounds to three in favor of djamil. Charlie which is absolutely absurd as a scorecard up. Let's get your reaction..

"When the olympics start will be the most talented team in tokyo. Hands down no question. Most talented team in tokyo with the roster that they have but this is like a five alarm fire right now howard. This loss to nigeria. I don't care if they win the rest of these pre olympic games which will take place through next sunday. This has to make you nervous if you're a fan of the team because not only is it this. The loss to nigeria. But you go back two years ago at the world championships where you had a us team. That was good. Didn't have probably better team now than they were back in two thousand nineteen but all nba players. They finished seventh. They've been seventh at the world championships. You have the seventh-place finish the loss of nigeria. How concerned are you howard beck about. Usa basketball. It's just an exhibition game. Chris oh no no. It's not just an exhibition game. Stop this team was thrown together over the last however many weeks they had what like three practices. I think i'll ever. Us team is thrown together. What are you talking about. There's no team. There's no no mid season practices for usa basketball. No but the nigerian team has been practicing. What i'm saying is some of the play in the nba though wants win the nba nba. A few of them play in the nba but that team has had time together more so than the team. Sorry brown coaching. that team. That i missed was that a facsimile of mike brown on the bench all season long. What what are we talking about. The warriors have been out for like two months kris k. Okay so two months. that's what matters. That's that's the number three three practices. Also they're still missing. I believe at least three guys because they're playing in the finals right now. Booker middleton chris paul get it. Yes not chris. Ball's not playing a holiday with the the what holland is your holiday. Those those guys will matter especially given that middleton and holiday are to the better perimeter defenders that that team. Usa has and if you look at the rest of team usa's roster. I don't see a ton of great defenders. There there are a few. I think those three guys by the way are going to be exhausted by the time they get to. They may well be. They may will be so. We're going to judge them. Judging when their whole judge when the games matter to strange to me like we don't judge nba teams based on the preseason but we judge team usa based on these exhibition games. That they do going into international competition. I feel like it's thirty. One point favorites. Why why is there betting line on a freaking exhibition better training but a little league baseball. Now country degenerates damn right. I didn't mean chris i'm with. Let's go monday. Nigeria money line. I just. I can't get too excited about this. If they lose the rest of the exhibitions does that mean something. Yeah that might be alarming if they're if they're still struggling to find some cohesion. That could be alarming. But i mean the talent is obviously their talent alone doesn't win on the international stage in style of game is different team ball matters. Shooting matters like yeah. There's a bunch of budget stuff that comes into play. But i i find the panic over this loss or at least the outcry to be a little bit much. So you don't take into account the seventh-place finish in two thousand nineteen. I mean that to me. It's the it's not just as game. The totality of it right. Like and i don't know howard like so in the early two thousands the world kind of caught up to the us ninety to ninety six thousand us. Gold maps then comes the two thousand two world championships in indianapolis and that's seven. The place finish was one of the worst worst outcomes in at least recent usa history. They got it together after that. They hired jerry colangelo. They bringing mike chef ski. They get their act together. Two thousand six two thousand eight then. They run off. Three consecutive years are three consecutive cycles of gold. Medals is argon. Made that like the world's caught up again that somewhere along the way and the last four or five years. The rest of the world has once again caught up usa basketball. I'm trying to understand this. I mean that's close games in those olympics cycles. No question about it. But i can't imagine the oh eight. Twelve or sixteen team losing nigeria. I can't exhibition or otherwise. I can't see it happening. No team and the and the one that followed it were built around like lebron koby. Carmelo enjoying wait. I mean that that groups at another level like as good as this group is that we're seeing right now as talented as they are after k. D. tatum's really good damian. Lillard is great. I mean come arbit- tatum. Bill lillard auto bio levin. Draymond dream ends up there in years but one has won some things. Jeremy grant jeremy grant zach living out of like. These are guys who have done anything in the nba yet. But they're all stars most they're they're also but are they to level of lebron kobe now but do you think is that what you're saying then is that what you're saying to be at the level you need to have like i'm saying the crop to win. I'm saying that if we're going to start comparing the twenty twenty one team to the twenty eight a two thousand eight two thousand twelve teams there is. There is not an equivalent right now. Lebron kobe laurent cobaine weight. And plus what we what. We called olympic. Mellow like carmelo. Didn't have the success in the nba. That some of his teammates did but carmelo in terms of talent level and certainly has resume like that group was at a whole other level. That group is a different level than jason. Tatum bam outta bios. Zach levine. Okay so not saying that you necessarily should have to have that level of time firepower to win an exhibition game against nigeria. Or anybody else. But i am saying comparing usa to itself different iterations of team usa. This one is not that one. This is not as dominant group as the ones we saw in eight and two thousand twelve. It just isn't what do you do like. What's the solution here. Like i mean i jerry. Colangelo deserves an enormous amount of credit for rebuilding that program when it was at. Its nadir mitra chefs. He comes in enormous amount of credit for what they did. But as we sit here in twenty twenty one like it's almost to me howard like the usa basketball rebuilding. The program became cool. Like lebron wanted to do it. Chris paul like dwayne wade. These guys wanted to do it and then they did it. And i think playing for usa basketball didn't become quite as cool as it was fifteen years ago. Like is that what has to happen like does not need to have like a fifth place finish in tokyo for all of a sudden the next generation of a-list stars wherever that may be in two thousand twenty four to come back into the mix and is that the only way this team can win. I mean i think we need to pay attention to the overall context like obviously one. These olympics were supposed to happen a year ago. They're delayed a year because of covid got durant out of it though like that right. It's questionable whether these the olympic should be happening at all still but along the way because of these back to back brutal seasons and everything else like team. Usa doesn't have james harden right now. Doesn't have anthony davis because of the injury doesn't have steph curry doesn't have kyrie irving doesn't have lebron kawai again. If your argument is that the second or third tier it sounds like sounds like insulting. Somehow but if you're saying that the next wave believe after those guys should still be good enough to dominate on the world stage. Maybe but if the point is that the team as best are they still. Are they still able to win. Gold fairly easily. Your probably but a bunch of them aren't on this team right now because of injuries and just the stress of the last year or two so this this is not necessarily representative of the best of the best right now. It just isn't and yes. They should still be good enough to win. Yes the world has caught up to some extent. No the the group that at nigeria's put it put out there last week. Does not leap off the page improbably. Us should've still want it. But again i exhibition game after like three practices. Let's see what happens with the rest of this. This schedule out brought mellow back. I mean he's not what he was four years ago. Eight years ago twelve years ago but the guy knows how to play international basketball. He might have sat. maybe. I guess. I didn't really. I assume that he just want to keep. He didn't kind of like four formerly re retire from the olympics. But it'd be pretty much says like i'm done like lebron kinda did to get talked into it. I feel like. I don't know if i was if i was the usa team would try really hard to get carmelo blake because his style. Whatever it is to the nba is perfect for the national basketball. He's a really good or national basketball player. On this subject damian lillard. He spoke for the first time. Since the hiring of chauncey billips. Only listen to what little had to say about his future in portland. I'm prepared to go in and do my job every year. Like hopefully we make strides over direction and could become a better team a new coach notice. That's where i am. What soured it sounds like. Lillard is at least nominally on board with going back to the blazers. But if i'm a team out there with assets. I don't listen to that response and say well it's over damian. Lillard is back on the same page with the portland trailblazers. If i'm a team with assets i hold onto those assets because it feels to me like the blazers might be one like sixteen to start from blowing that whole thing up with louis mccollum on the way out the door so get the sense now. That seems more likely than not that damian lillard at blazers training camp. He's in ablaze uniform. He starts the season with the portland trailblazers. But if it doesn't work with chauncey billips early and you get close that trade deadline. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see portland decide. Look we've got a. We've got to do something here and opened the door for damian lillard trade. What do you think. I think that nothing has changed. I think that his remarks last week because he sounded a little bit lukewarm. Or just you know you hear one of two things. Well you want to hear one thing if you're a portland trail blazers fan or if you're just looking for any indication that lillard is all in your you want to hear him say listen. I know things are rough right now. But i'm all in you know this is. This is where. I want to be you to repeat all the usual talking points that you hear from players in his position and that we've heard from bradley beal that we used to hear from james harden houston. Which is a win in phil in city fill in the blank with the city. I want to win here. I don't wanna go somewhere else. You know we're going to get this right blah blah. He didn't go down the usual list. And so i think it left open. Some interpretation but getting has changed like the disappointment was clear when the season ended. Some of the things have happened since including obviously the the the train wreck away they went about the the coaching search and lillard. Being caught in the crossfire. There at feeling heat from fans about chauncey billips being selected and so. I don't think we should expect he's going to be rah. Rah right now The trailblazers have a lot of work to do. But we also have not even hit the summer yet. Like there's the draft hasn't happened yet. Free agency hasn't happened yet. There's there's a lot of work to be done. And i think if you're damian lillard which you're probably doing is internally saying here's what i need to see happen externally saying you know what let's let's wait and see i mean you see. He can't he can't say publicly the same things that he's telling say neal o'shea right about what the the state of the roster i i would think that there are some very impassioned debates or discussions being held behind closed doors about what they need to get this thing right and if they can't get it right the he might shift is his stance about staying there long term. But that hasn't happened yet that we know of. What do you think the most interesting potential conversation is amongst players over these next four weeks like i'm kind of curious what jason tatum bradley beal talk about. Tatum and beal close friends dating back to their highschool days both went to the same high school bill with something of a mentor to jason. Tatum actually got him involved with his trainer. Drew hanlin which helped. Tatum elevate his his personal skills and they've talked about how happy they are to be playing together. Played the all star game together for the first time beal last year of his contract. Like you know we've seen these conversations yield real tangible conversation. You'd like to be a fly on the wall on for any of these guys in the next couple of weeks. Yeah i mean look we. We have a history now going back over a decade. If we're to believe that the that the heels were formed in part through team usa activities. You know which is true which is true. That's that's yielded an extra things guy. You know guys who you mentioned. Tatum and bill because they were already friends but guys also become friends through this experience right and then they start getting the ideas about playing together. Like oh hey. This is a lot of fun. Let's do this again in the nba. So there's i'm i'm sure some of that is is happening. It always does. Who else in that group. I mean man. If any of these guys that'd be trying to recruit bam out a bio but he's too early in his in his contract with miami to pry him loose from there And you know the heater still a pretty potent team but you know jimmy butler is up there in miles and outta bios future won't necessarily be there forever. That's the way it goes in the nba. I think tatum has the potential to be like the biggest recruiter. They're like he's about to start the first year of his max level extension. He can recruit bill. But like you can also does damian lillard like. It's great to play in boston. I love it here. Answer some questions of my have a playing on the east coast for the first time. Like i think data might be boston's best asset at this point. Yeah again some of this comes down to bradley. Beal's coming up to that point where he has the leverage to task out because of his contract lillard under contract for several more years and so he's not in that position. So what if it says. Like i need to go like. I don't foresee the blazers being no finish your contract. Just don't see it. i think right. And they would work with him on a deal to sure but directing it is harder so beal can use the leverage of his free agency to say well if you send me to team x. I'm not gonna resign there. Which then blows up that deal and he can direct himself to the team he really wants to be at lillard would have a harder time to doing that. Because he doesn't have free agency looming two to play that card. Yeah well i encourage any reporter. That's in tokyo tatum. Beal and lillard talking to each other. Just take a picture and then let the internet go wild crazy because it will unquestionably last thing for you. Howard the breaking news. This week in the coaching ranks. Is that jamal moseley is headed to orlando moseley of course last with dallas. A really well respected assistant coach there. Who was a candidate for that. Maverick job before. It went to jason kidd my immediate reaction to that higher howard beyond i think being an excellent choice for orlando is that we're gonna look at at moseley and jason kidd on parallel tracks. The next couple of years moseley. There was a strong case to be made that he should have been elevated to that head. Coaching job he'd been considered for other head coaching jobs. Before most recently in new york he had by all accounts a great relationship with luka doncic i understand bringing kit in he's got a history with dallas and as riccar lau said publicly having a player that played the game like kid and having a player that plays the game like don-shik make some sense to pair those two guys together. But there's always going to be as i watched these two situations unfold. I'm gonna wonder you know. Did the mavericks make the right choice. Leading jamaa moseley go and bringing jason kidd in and there's so many variables in this the first being at orlando's in step one or maybe even steps zero of a massive rebuild right there in the negatives right now. I think there's still maybe more fat to trim on that roster before they really bottom out. Yeah and you know you talk about trying to build around. You know markelle foltz. And and jonathan isaac jonathan isaac for so long. They're getting hurt and he's a great player but they've loved writing in a weird way john stays healthy. He's still more of a complementary store right like he's he's a potentially defensive player of the year at some point. He's not a guy who you're building an offense around though and marquel foltz okay. He he got himself back on track in orlando. He has a career now where he didn't have one but he's not a foundational building block. Come on like that's crazy so the roster doesn't have much talent jamal. Moseley's is coming into a situation. Which a lot of first time head coach is committed to which is all right. There's a lot of work to do so You're gonna have to do a lot of development. You're going to have to take a lotta lumps in the win loss column. It's gonna be rough going for the first year or two or maybe three. Let's see how they can get things going. But you know as it has been a certain other like kenny. Atkinson came to look a completely hopeless situation in brooklyn but was known as development coach in atlanta. And sure enough. Everybody who went there. Joe harris spencer. Dinwiddie jared allen versus lower. First round picks. Guys who were you know whether they were reclamation projects whether they were low picks everybody seems to get better the second they went to brooklyn and play kenny atkinson and his staff congenial. Moseley have the kind of effect in orlando can the front office. Get him to kind of guys. That will thrive in that in that kind of environment and carve out careers from cells and carbon identities. Jamal moseley has a lot going for him. And we've heard like many great things about it but we often hear great things about assistant coaches who don't end up panning out so i always. We have to caution ourselves on these things. Because i thought. Brian shaw was gonna be a great head coach and he was. Everybody loved him all the players sung as praises when he was associate head coach under frank. Vogel indiana he goes to denver probably just the wrong guy at the wrong time but he hasn't had another shot since then but that went really badly. Brett brown was really great in in some respects for the for the early years of the process and then suddenly. It seemed like they'd hit some sort of ceiling. Eager kokoschka of had been talked about for years is a great assistant. Coach didn't work out. Swells head coach in phoenix. David dale bumpy ride in memphis and then disastrous in new york. We just don't know like luke walton. Another example like there are plenty of coaches who as their when their assistance. We hear and see the best of them and then you know some of them be go on it and have great success coaches. I mean tyler has been fantastic. Mike malone has been fantastic money williams. Nick nurse dwayne casey a lotta longtime assistance. Get their shot and then you know it. It works out in a dozen. It's all contextual. It's all just the opportunity you have the thing for dallas is. They went with a guy who has experienced jason kit. That experience was not necessarily good experience. Like i think most people around the would look at what he did in milwaukee in brooklyn and say. I'm going to steer clear. Maybe you'd rather have the the unproven. Jamal moseley versus the somewhat proven jason kidd but. I don't think we'll know what the right choice was there for a while yet. Because it's it's gonna take some time before we can evaluate moseley as head coach. I maybe jason kidd learned something in two years as an assistant. I mean that happens. You know working with lebron for entire for two entire seasons working under frank vogel maybe picked up some things that'll be useful to him as a head coach. Moseley to me. The key is giving him time. Like you've got to be committed to moseley for a minimum. I think of three years and more likely five years. And then you see what you have in head coach. You mentioned gore. I mean it's worked out for phoenix. Absolutely but i do think he got hosed out there i mean he only had one year on the job and that year was without deandra aiden chris. Paul had devon booker of course but that was not a good team that he was coaching. There i gotta get moses the because you want to see what the guy can do when you put that team in a position to win a great example to me is james breglio in charlotte. I mean berea. Was one of those guys assistant coach elevated to head coaching position in charlotte. Not great first couple of years there but when he was given players and chance to win he did pretty well. I mean up until lamelo ball went out the horns were really good team and i think they will be a good team. Going forward in part because of the borrego is a pretty good coach. I want to see this magic team. Invest heavily in jamal. The you're the guy developed these guys and we'll keep you around no matter what the won loss record says until you get a chance to win then you judge like brett brown six or seven days since brett brown left but i can see the for letting go of brett brown. I mean they had a talented team and to a degree the underachieved. But you've got to let the coach get a roster on that level before you really make any decisions about whether they can coach. Yeah well and that's the thing about. This is what set up says apart. I think the good organizations from the bad ones is that you you decide when you choose a guy. Especially if he's a longtime assistant not a guy with head coaching experience. And you've said we believe in this guy. This is somebody who's got a great trekker record as an assistant. We're going to first opportunity. It's your obligation to when you say investment. Yeah it's time investment. It's a give them all the tools to succeed. Give him the time to succeed. You've decided you believe in him. So stand behind that have the conviction to stand behind that and take some bumps along the way you know maybe maybe memphis and or the knicks should have stuck with david physed longer. You know we had heard nothing but great things about fiscal coming out of miami. Initially we may yet you know. Find out that he. He can be great head coach in the right situation. Maybe those worth rights situations. He might be one of those guys though. I love physios and assist one of those guys. Though the just the temperament is always important. Like the government like memphis yet. Some battles with market assault didn't work out your plus new york. You just might be one of those guys that doesn't have the right temperament to be is based on what we've seen a memphis in new york might be better suited for these ranks but if he succeeds in l. a. I think he'll get another chance right. Maybe i think the point being though that if you as an organization have identified a guy instead he we believe in him then. Okay then believe in him. Stick with them and make sure you've given them enough tools to succeed Is it a pulling the plug at the first sign of of struggle and that's what happens in the nba. too often. is that seems panic. You know the fans turn. There's some minor flare up. Oh the coach and player got into it. Whatever it may good teams that can happen on as well. And it's it's just. It's the way franchises. React so you have to know whether or not the guy is is is right and then stick with them. And so yeah. Let's jomo's should get a nice long here. She got a ton of latitude in orlando given where they are as an organization given the state of that roster. Yeah i agree. Howard enjoy milwaukee looking forward to hearing the conversation with the lazarus on friday. You can check podcast. Right here on the crossover feet again. Make sure you listen to howard's interview. Spencer dinwiddie from last week. It was really really strong. Enjoy -joy the mid west our. We'll talk when you're back on the northeast always a pleasure. My friend the newest player in the pre nba basketball landscape is overtime. Elite elite will begin playing sometime in the fall. And we'll be headlined by some of the top now. Former high school players in the country players would be paid minimum one hundred thousand dollars with some making north of that and have access to high level facilities training as well as educational programs to help. Get a better grasp on that. I'm joined by brandon williams the head of basketball operations for overtime. Elite and kevin ollie the former. Nba guard uconn. Coach was the head coach and director of player development bread. And i want to start here with you. Just kind of give me the ten thousand foot view overtime elite. What are the objectives. What what what was behind the formation of this league. I think any of us. Chris who've been around for a long time i've actually seen Sort of the downside of young players who entered into professional ranks to this point. It's been the nba Who are not ready. And so what does that mean you know not not ready to form and be stars or is it just not ready to be great teammates or is it not ready to be good partners. is sort of all that you know the idea that the work day is much longer than they know. And that there's more responsibility to be in a professional athlete The responsibilities to families and communities we just have to do a better job preparing them and here was an opportunity to be part of a program that wanted to address all that. It's not just about being a good player. It's like we wanna address the whole athlete. Hope so on. Three levels were hitting basketball. Easiest thing understand. I think businesses in our world is education And then there's brand you know. These young people now are moving at a speed that we aren't as older folks and they want to build things An earlier age particularly off the court so building a brand is important something that can last well beyond their tread on tire so we're hitting it in basketball business brand. That's that's that's really thirty thousand foot view. Kevin what attracted you to this job. Just like his dad is the whole person being able coach them from a mind body and soul Experience and understanding the mindfulness athlete I've seen it from a pro level. Got up tune into play thirteen years with twelve different teams so i understand like the different trials and tribulations you go through with a player not saying that these players are gonna go through that but is getting them more prepared if they do come into some certain situations where it's not typically going the right way. How can they manage that situation. So what they do today can echo into tomorrow and having the ability to kana paint on a black blank. Canvas is what a really attracted to me to to this you know. Ot league program we can take the player really shape the curriculum you not with teaching them about subjects. But we're really teaching them about themselves as well from media training From mental health issues. All the different things that come involved because we all know chris is stress. You know from success is a lot of pressures is a lot of people pulling at you. It's a lot of people won't certain things. But how do you deal with that from a player's standpoint where you can play when you get on the basketball court and half clear and not be caught up in the distractions of off the court issues. Um as desks desks were really kind of vocal. Spirit to give back in it and how these kids you know. Have these players be available at the moment of truth to make the right decisions and that was very important to me. Kevin as you mentioned you played in the nba brand. You played in the nba. As well i wanna ask both of you guys and kevin. I'll start with you like if this was available to you as sixteen. seventeen year. Old looking back. Would you have founded attractive with a definitely founded attractive You know i kind of thought the box anyway. I was from chris. Shaw from from from south central and i chose connecticut. So you places that. I didn't even know nothing about growing up. You always thought out the box and never wanted to go down a path that everybody was going down So i was always curious. And i think that's how my mom especially my mom. My dad raised me. So i definitely been curious of this situation. No no speaking now without you know took it. I'm not sure. But i think it really gave me another option to look at it and this is what we're trying to do not saying that the ncaa is wrong overtime. Leaders wrong or right. It's not about that. It's about if you really care about the student. Athletes you give them as much options as possible. And i think this gives the lee student athlete. Another option and i think you know it's a very Great option for them to have and if they choose overtime league we're going to give our whole heart to make sure they're developed on and off the basketball court chris i- jumping after coach It would have been interesting. Chris but i certainly would not have been a candidate i would. Let's just get that right. What what things that's important. We sit down going through just grassroots community and we spent months just talking to people educating about. You know what we're about who we are. Each of us has a reputation in some other space. Not here The this program isn't for everybody is not the right fit for everybody. We are cherry picking and a lot of ways. These are players that feel like they are destined for professional basketball. There are a lot of sixteen year olds. That don't know that yet and their parents aren't convinced that yet in people that support them. Don't don't feel that confidence yet. They may be another year away or two years away but this is not. This is not the right path for everyone. Twenty four athletes roughly twelve per class. We're looking at juniors and seniors and the truth is at this age. What was really funny about scouting them is everybody's skinny and like a lanky and underdeveloped and still has like a mountain of upside to you know to to get through before you can really see who they're going to be but you know if you have a young player like brand williams who's just dreaming of being an nba player but does not much certainty. That's even realistic We gotta be very careful about this approach In taking because there there are risks but for those that that have already established in this deke. They've established a day of separated from their class. You know jaylen. Lewis has an example the most recent example. He's he's he's elevated in separate. The draft isn't tomorrow though so there's still a lot of work to do but he's already in front running physician and it gives everyone low confidence that this is the kind of investment and the kind of pet that would make a ton of sense for players like that. Let me follow up on that brandon. Because you're you're entering. What suddenly become a fairly crowded space in terms of leagues like this. You know the g. league ignite is one season in but they've had a measure of success. We've seen jalen green probably a top pick. Jonathan kamenga top five or six. Then you have the ncw with this. Recent ruling allowing top players to make money off their name image and likeness. How does how does the elite separate itself from that group. Why think i is. We start a little bit sooner so the g. league zone a great job with what we call it a year the prep year that year. That a recent graduates would be going to college and they've already been hacking the system you know going to italy or china So so there's a market for those players and we want an alternative to college for for for us though. Our players are seeking an alternative to high school so we are a school but we think about the resources that were bringing to the table first of which being an nba like environment You know start coach. Ali coach lehto in a robust set of staff. I mean scouting staff a high performance staff administrative team. Our goal was to simulate an nba organization for for young athletes at sixteen seventeen eighteen. Th there there is no other environment. Like that. And i think the big way that we separate with high school athletes Is that both domestically and internationally. We're able to put twenty four of them together in a building. So what we're selling is the best competition for these guys starts at home. I mean every day in line coaches don't minister drills administer competition aspects of practice and getting ready for games but when you look to the right and left and i noticed as a player. There's no weak link. I mean everywhere you look. There's somebody that's doing what you're doing and possibly doing more. Because they they are not just dreamed about the into the league or to the high level. They're on their way there That's where we've been able to. I think create a little separation from others that have tried or looked at something. Like this kevin. How do you approach this job. Do you do it in a similar mindset and you had at uconn where you have young players you also you know yukon. You had to keep them academically eligible you to follow that pretty closely. I mean is there is it a similar mindset or do you take a different tact. I think you just let it be you know. Similar is not. It's just whatever comes you say yes to it and you cultivate hope from it I never coached high school players. They was always you know graduated from high school. And now they're freshman's This situation is a little different in in was recruiting for two to three years. This situation is a little different. But you know from me. Chris i love the unknown about it. And that's the space i live in. Not just wanna make sure that. I have the space incorporate something in these players that they can just think about it can build from a have a foundation so when they make the transition they have every tool in the toolbox to say okay. Oh that's a problem Assess it let me be able to correct it. Let me obsessed. Let me be aware of it and i think that's the difference between you know coaching a high school kid in in the college. Kid i mean you get able to mold them a little bit better and then you have to understand where they at. Now you know back then. I didn't have social media. We didn't have social media now. These kids these players are building their brand a little bit earlier and now you just meet them where they are. And i can't wait to get them up on campus get them up until atlanta just continue to build a great relationship. Welcome spend time with the one on one in. This situation is going to provide us to do a lot more skill development that i didn't have a really good opportunity and it had not one say good opportunity. I didn't have the best opportunity. Because there's so many things we own a row recruiting You own a row fundraising these different things. Brandon's taken care of in. Dan porter is taken care of. I can just really coach the player and work on his skill development on and off the basketball court. So it's really given me my own lane. So i can really perform my job. Mama job is really breaking down and relationships it starts. Relationship is start with trust. Stars will hold is spending time with the the young student athletes on and off the basketball court and pushed them to greatness and the competition is not on. our side of competition is with him. You know can you beat your previous best bestself. Can you be better than today you know. Can you be better tomorrow than you were date. And that's what i'm coaching. And that's what i love to do. And i think we're going to have some great young man as open as biden has going to be vulnerable going to try to reach for the sky. In the sky is going to be ob- you is not going to be limits. I can't wait to get up to atlanta. We've been having some many camps. Chris has been wonderful to get back on the court with the guys. And i'm looking forward to the next mini camp and dan looking forward to getting them up to atlanta. So we really can go to work. You know when. I was was talking to brian. shaw a couple of months ago. Kevin about how he was coaching. The ignite you know it was a lot of pro stop. He was trying to bring to that team. Are you taking that same. Approach you trying to coach them like their nba players or something different. No it's nothing different is just. I'm building pro. Habits in every situation is going to be different. Chris this is going to be some guys. Come in you know. Say for instance like a. John montero will we got him and he you know is a little bit more advanced than some other players because he's been a pro- already and then it's going to be another situation where we gotta talented guy might not be able to get quick but these opportunities we can go at our own pace we can sit down and talk to them but we're really teaching and building pro habits and those habits is going to translate over to them being great pros when that opportunity come invest in the nba are the euro league so every day you know we are building like a practice plan like more of a college practice plan nba practice bandwidth doing drills. That i got from my numerous stops in the nba. You know we're doing sets in the nba. Then we gotta understand that sixteen years old as well you know and maybe sometimes you gotta you know kinda doubt it down a little bit. But i'm gonna let com. I'm going to let that go. i'm not going to focus on one of it. I'm not gonna say oh. We're doing this process. Each and every day every day is different. And that's what i love about the unknown. And i'm gonna treat it like that and we just gonna continue to bill because i think we got great mas and organization that really want to coach the whole person. And that's what i'm really excited about. You decided to upgrade your outdoor deck. So you ordered the essentials. Power washer said a patio chairs and a shiny new grill. And you use your bank of america. Customized cash rewards credit card choosing to earn three percent cashback online shopping and up to five point. Two five percent preferred rewards member which you put toward your most essential deck addition a bird feeder of yours at bank of america dot com slash more rewarding copyright two thousand twenty one bank of america corporation support for this podcast comes from invent together according to studies less than thirteen percent of all inventors who hold a us patent are women black and hispanic college graduates patent at half the rate of their white counterparts. But we can fix that by increasing participation innovation and patenting by underrepresented groups. It would quadruple. The number of american inventors and increase annual gdp by almost one trillion dollars. Invent together is a coalition of organizations companies. Universities and concerned citizens committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to invent and patent because the more diverse. The american patent system gets the stronger and more successful. our nation will become. What can you do to help. Divers inventors patent and unleash economic opportunity. Find out at invent together dot org learn more and take action today brandon not to continue to compare this team to the ignite but when i talked to sharieff abderrahim about that i mean. I had asked him about the sustainability of that team. Given how much. Money was being poured in to pay some of the players. And he bobbed and weaved floyd mayweather trying to answer that question. Because it's it's hard to commit to it without say a television contract more sponsorships and things like that when you can you speak to kind of the sustainability of this because we've seen startups with an influx of cash. Get get in big the first year. But then peter out. I mean what needs to happen. Four overtime elite to become a long term successful program while has got to answers. I think you know a concept. I mean we're we're selling on the ability to develop young players and have a more more pro ready right. So this is. This is the path we are offering basketball development. Call it professional Business development And we are also like leveraging. What is an incredible media platform that again. The things that we like to call a distinguishing factors. That's a huge one. So not to bob and weave one. We gotta be good ass. You know that. That's how have long deputy spurs the spurs. They were good for really long time. And so we've got the that there were good at this note. No pressure on kale right The the the second piece though is you know and this comes from my my time in the nba. It just wasn't that long ago where it out of chicago. Pre-draft combine interview. If i said. I wanna build my brand. Everybody in the room was like smirking and like you know what. What are we talking about like. It's about basketball basketball basketball And you know if you are young team developing and not winning a lot of games truth is you can't sell just basketball because your basketball isn't great you got to sell personalities and stories in that there's something that people can invest in in fall in love with other than like the final score like otherwise. The sixers had no chance right any any development team yet to buy into a story and for us. I think we have a chance to create stories but we get a chance to show those stories because we have a platform. So it's it doesn't take much. I mean i'm not a social media guru. But when i got recruited for this job haven't been around the block a little bit certainly from an nba perspective. I heard a couple of things. I really got my attention. One was fifty million followers That's eyeballs and we all know that that Business follows the eyeballs in whatever in whatever respect. The other was which is unfair. Because i think that number changes month over month but it started at one point four and not set maybe one point eight or one point nine billion with a b. billion views of content a month that overtime in some ways has found a way to the heart. The mind of young people It is being communicated and solid as you know the generation z. sort media and content engine We are doing an amazing thing here which is developing young talent in a pure way that we want to make sure that they are prepared. Top to bottom to do well on the court to do well and communities to do well in business but then there's this other thing which is they want to be known like. No player wants to play in an empty building. Everybody wants to play where it matters. They wanna play. When nick can rock and like the building and just like recognizing their talent. We're just artists. And one thing that is kind of showcase. By one event that that overtime overtime the media company producing s called. You see it on youtube to. Is that over. Hundred million people watched that. I mean that that's not an insignificant number that players that are going to play overtime. Lee will have the opportunity to be known The the opportunity of bring brick big brands to the table and support this platform If not already indicated by the kinds of investors that that have shown interest but the brands that are coming to the table our sustainability is going to be showing value delivering value to not just the athletes but to overtime visibility. I would imagine great for them but can you monetize it. Can you make it so this league is in the black or does it need to be in the black every year. Well my the good news is as a basketball man. No different than a different than the is Get a budget. My job is to be fishing and and spend wisely. I i'm not. I'm not asked to sell tickets or generate revenue that's for a tremendous And in successful a business operations Our job is to make sure that what we are delivering is high is a high level product That you see the growth and development of our young players. What's there recruited. We gotta make them better. They need to be able to perform and probably the best testament of our success is going to be our nba. Gm voting with this pick right but with a coach saying like they did a nice job. This guy was. Well coached testament to takeo and the rest of the coaching staff. That if we're doing that will prove successful. Because guess what the next crop of recruits when we're in the gym like we're not chasing them. There's sort of meeting us at at minimum half way. We need to keep bringing high level taliban and developing talent to prove successful and i have a tremendous set of partners across academics and across content media. That will will do their part to elevate our business. Can you expecting to tap into some of your. nba relationships. I mean as you mentioned thirteen teams in twelve seasons. You've made a lot of friends over the years. We're going to see like san preston sitting in the crowd for your practices as a whole so sam and so many gyms that i know you know Kevin durant and all these guys are destinies in overtime. Just having them be around. We had our first minicamp. Ray allen showed up and not only showed up. He brought his son to work out with guys. Just it was just amazing. does just see how the branches that we can continue to pull up on and they continue to pull on us and be a partnership in. This thing is going to be great. Are you expecting to have kind of drop ins. Durant's involved with the league. You expecting these guys. Just be around. Which i would imagine would be both a resource for you but also an attractive quality to this league definitely. Definitely we going to build a place where it's going to be hopefully a development premier development destination for everybody and you know hopefully katie can come out and work out with guys and russell westbrook and james harden and all these guys that we know and i know i had opportunity to be evolved. Then it's kinda beat a veteran guys We want them to be around. Because it's not. Just me sean. It's also watching tape like these are the different drills and look how k. d. and look how chris paul is using the pick and rolls and now they're showing up that's a that's a big big bang for us with us growing these young talented student athletes To get them inspired to the next level and they're doing a great job done only gonna do. I coached him. Chris a coach me on a day to day basis. I'm open to that and we just really want to have a love affair with guys and and the end of the day chris. We want appease the basketball guys. We wanna play the right way. We want to share a basketball. We wanna run. We wanna have fun. We want how to join the game but it can't just be me me me. It has to be weak. And i'm wanting to teach guys how to be involved in any system they get drafted about. They can be a part of a productive system and be a productive partner in in the community as well no matter what city they when they arrive to the nba brandon. Before let you go. What schedule gonna look like i mean is this team playing. Just walk me through kind of what these kids are getting into. And what kind of schedule you gonna be able to put together so schedule that that is really interesting for everybody. And i wanna try to illuminate. But i've got to be careful we are still contracting with some teams But for the audience the think about it in buckets. We're gonna play independent prep schools. That's going to be a significant part of our schedule. We are a high school so we are looking to schedule. Some of the top independence that you would typically no to have a national schedule can travel that have the ability to be mobile. We're scheduling home and away with with With those folks and it looks like net set as an example It looks like you know. Folks that are playing for a national title Arizona florida california. So it'll be a widespread travel schedule for us. We're also looking at European competition so think about junior euroleague as an example. Some of the best clubs the Insects as an example Where we can get a collection of sixteen to nineteen year old elite talent to compete against us. And then as i mentioned earlier on the show we really feel like the best competition is gonna come internally and that's where our league play Comes into effect so we are looking at our group of twenty four as three teams of eight. There will be standings you'll be able to track will compete against each other. That'll be a significant part of our schedule as well. We don't want to overstep our guys one of the things. We really wanna correct leading science. Guide us here. is is minimized the wear and tear. Nobody's while still developing and preparing for a professional level place so a schedule of maybe thirty five. To forty games is our target. We started september Training camp will will begin Play by mid august. We'll be done by by Late march is how we see our schedule shaping up i'm looking forward to it brennan kevin. It's a really interesting concept and hope you guys have a lot of success with an. I'll certainly be watching a lot of. Nba people will be watching but brandon. Stay out of a set of massachusetts. Kevin has like some basketball. Ptsd from all those bc. Matchups i'm sure would probably were so tough. I don't remember kevin. It's not real like talk about it. But lita past. We'd be six thousand. That's not very nice. That's hovering kevin brand. Thanks for joining me. I appreciate it all right. Thank you chris. Thanks so much.

Chris manet's these employed by sports illustrated. The announcers got it in for me. This is the crossover. Nba podcast problem with it. Build a team that can beat of hosted by the one in all. Thank god chris. Mannix paul west at is a familiar name in nba circles. He spent parts of six seasons as head coach to other half a dozen or so has an assistant spent many years in the college ranks as the only coach in history with an nba at wnba championship. He's also the author of the new book called the speed game and joins me now on the podcast paul. Thanks for joining me. On my pleasure. Chris so i guess start with me. The basketball beginning. How does a coach at lasalle wind up with the los angeles lakers well. It goes back to my a saint. Joe's college background You know i play for jack ramsay And also playing for ramsey. Was jack mckinney. Who While i a player was an assistant with with ramczyk. So then jack mckinney guests. The job as the new lakers coach. And he calls me and says i'd like you to come and be with may took me about seven seconds to say. Let me think it over. Yes some common and back then. Head coaches in the nba only had one assistant. So it was you know Was kind of an honor for mckinney to invite me and i was happy to oblige. It seems almost impossible to believe a day when there was only one assist now. I think there's one assistant per player right. Exactly there's a six on the bench behind the curtain and the sixth that that only do workouts. So it's a. It's a changing times there. So i mean for people that can't recall a time like that by. What are your responsibilities. As an assistant coach in those days you did a little bit of everything And i have to add to this. You and the head. Coach did bad eighty percent of the scouting so as you now know. There is a scouting division on nba teams. That probably is ten plus skies with director et cetera. Back then there would be a part time guy that would fill in some game so for example i would coach. Practice with jack mckinney. On tuesday at noon and leave that afternoon the fly to oakland the see the warriors play that night and then fly back on midnight. Flight back to la and be a practice..

Did Boston Celtics Overplay Their Hand?

"Boston. Overplay its hand. There were a lot of reports in the hours. Leading up gordon hayward signing that the celtics and the pacers were discussing a sign and trade gary washburn over the boston globe. He suggests that the pacers were willing to throw in miles. Turner the celtics water a miles. Turner plus package whether it's miles. Turner and tj warren or miles turner and victoria depot. That that that celtics package seemed to highly unlikely to be something the pacers would go for. Tj warrant is coming off a monster performance in the bubble and victor oladipo for all his injury issues. last year is still an all star level player. You don't give up to players of that caliber to get a player. That play like gordon hayward frankly so the celtics. They didn't walk away with nothing because they do have tristan thompson. Now they do have jeff teague. But i can see jeff how miles turner would goodness celtics uniform. And the guy is a three point shooting mobile shot-blocking big man. He's not perfect. He's been called soft before there's questions about positional fit. But something tells me brad. Stevens could do well with versatile. Big man who can shoot three pointer. I i just. I wonder if we'll look back on this in a year and wonder if the celtics overplayed their hand because miles turner in addition to all the things i said he's got a reasonable contract by nba standards anyway. Eighteen million dollars per year over the next three. What do you think of that. Do you think there's a chance the celtics overplayed their hands here. I don't know. I don't think so. Crass t taking a slightly different tact on it. Because i wasn't all that a or the whole idea of only getting mile turner back in the deal. I understand everything you just said But the celtics certainly just made a a decision that that's what they were looking for excitement. Lucy gordon hayward elsewhere without getting any say return on. I don't mind that trying to get a little bit more in it. Not working out for them and again. I'm hearing all your points what you're saying about mouse. Turner but that's something maybe dearly age his staff. I'm not saying you're gonna go out and find another mouse. Turner application that production with a couple of different players here and there and whether it ends up being some kind of combination of daniel thais and looking down the bench and seeing what happens off from that point I just wasn't sure that you know. Look indiana if you really wanna gordon hayward i think you had to force them to really make you pay for it and i don't say that do would you come down to it. The pacers were willing to give up that much and so that sure indicates how much that they really wanted. Gordon hayward i'm fine with the celtics student what they did now. You could be ultimately correct. They may regret not adding that kind of player. Especially we get into the playoffs split I agent it is staff are more than willing to let that ride. It see if they can't come up with that kind of a similar player through the course of use it a couple of different players and seeing what they can do at the trade deadline. Yeah they did get tristan thompson. Which is exactly what they need in on that front line. They've got the more athletic up perimeter shooting floor spacing kind of guy. You've got robert williams who is athletic shop locked they didn't have the physical rebounding tough guy. And that's what tristan thompson is brings championship experience to that team which i think will be a valuable addition and jeff teague is fine. He's not a starter anymore. But you're not asking him to basically kemba walker insurance down there in case kennedy's to take time off that knee injury so it wasn't. It wasn't a failure of an off season for boston. I just. I wonder how we look at this this summer. The summer this fall we look at a couple years

We're we're now part of the never ending cycle of being glued to cnn or fox msnbc or whatever it is that you you watch out there. But i've had my tv on for the better part of twenty four hours. I don't know about you. i did turn it off to go to sleep. I thought that was the healthy thing to do. I got up. I resisted the urge to turn it on again immediately. But i caved after about twenty minutes. Yeah it's it's a lot. It's a lot i would say this not to you. Know we have other things to talk about of course but you know players driving the black vote especially during the nba's restart if it turns out that. Joe biden wins the presidency. I deserve some credit for it. Right like i mean. If the voter turnout is the key to all this and it sure seems like it's going to set some records when it comes to voter turnout. How players participated in this process. I think we'll be influential. I think a lot of players can feel good about themselves and what they did. During that bubble to to push voting to the forefront as hard as they did will never be able to quantify that of course crazy. We'll never know exactly what the impact was and there were so many different forces at work in this particular election cycle across our country. But d- d- Rise of athlete activism and in the nba case maybe the strongest of any dealings with wnba wnba both But the platform that they have an the way that they've deployed over. The last. several months was incredible. And absolutely that that that's meaningful absolutely that helps you know you'll never know how many more voters there were because of it but listen at a minimum we know that a bunch of nba arenas became voting precincts because nba players pushed hartford in got that commitment if from the arenas that hadn't already they got more commitments in the wake of the wildcat strike in the bubble so you know at a minimum. Nba players contributed to making sure that more people had access to voting precinct amid a pandemic in a safer. Socially distanced place to vote. And in addition to that. Of course lebron james is more than a vote organization trying to you. Know a franchise voters in that battle back against the disenfranchisement of voters especially in the black community. All of that has had some kind of impact will ever know the extent but for sure. Nba players..

What was it about this subject matter that inspired you to to go again I mean, you know as well as anyone how challenging it is to to write a book what was it about this subject matter that kind of moved you Well. The person that you mentioned the fan who literally sat behind the Knicks Bench. For forty plus years woman named Shell Muffler she was. A divorced mother of five who? Lived in Connecticut, suburbs of New York. And with five kids after her marriage fell apart she. you know really didn't feel like she belonged there anymore a single woman with. China. Tickets kept moving down through the years with to where she wound up right behind the bench and our friendship really began. With me kind of you know seeing her as a potential good source like every good tabloid muckraker. In New York. I was out there looking for sources as a young beat reporter for the New York Post and struck up a friendship with Michelle and she became a is in years behind the bench. You know, let me know who Brown was screaming at WHO's pissed off gang taken out of the game all. So this relationship ensued over forty years. She became something much greater to me. At the end of her life in two thousand, eighteen I wound up writing her obituary for the times I pitched really kind of thinking like they were going to say to me in A. Sorry, you know we run obituaries on people who write Pulitzer Prize winning novel is in cure cancer but the idea of this woman in sat behind the bench for that many years was settled well-known around the garden..

Part Ron Nut Carney is here fresh from his southern California estates finished around of surfing in the afternoon, and it's kind enough to rejoin me here on the podcast. What's up real on? You know Chris type. Appreciate that you think I have the ability of Surf. That means a lot to me I'm not I'm not typically known for my balanced, so appreciate you throwing it out there that I indeed cancer well I mean. The? Beaches of southern California flooded right. Now I'm not exactly sure what you're doing during all this I feel like there's a there's got to be a medium between the people that don't WanNa. Go anywhere and the people that just want to say. Screw it open. Everything up like how about we can get back to work, but maybe not spend all weekend at the beach like, can we? We agree that may be a prudent solution to this. Listen you have my. I can't I can't speak for what people are doing orange. County, which is like its own unique house scape I did see someone eating alone in a patio at like a very average diner the other day, and that made me sad like I understand people want things to open, but if it comes down to. To like eating alone at a very very average restaurant. Maybe it's not worth it for that either. You know what I mean. I would agree I would agree I. Think staying home might be the better course of action on that one all right. Let's talk about what's going on in the NBA right now. Because the NBA is not planning on staying on the League is set to return. Return Orlando. Twenty two teams will convene down in central. Florida, there will be an eight regular season games to determine seating and give the sixteenth currently on the outside, looking in a chance to make the playoffs. There are other machinations here. There could be a play in game for the number. Eight seed at the nine seed is within four games, so that allows them a chance to. Make up ground how to make up all the ground in that conference and gives the NBA maybe a little bit more juice, going into the post season, so give me your overall thoughts on what the NBA settled on for its return to play in two thousand twenty. I think ultimately made the most sensible call in in terms of. If the situation is, they're playing no matter what I understand why this makes sense. It's obvious that they have a financial motivation to get back on the floor. And I think having twenty two teams. There is kind of you know for them. The happy medium between you know they don't WanNa. Go right into the playoffs and have this long layoff in kind of risk, the integrity of the playoffs of this I think more than anything. The eight Games is is going to be a tune-up for some of the good teams i. I know that they are adding in these wrinkles like the plan tournament and you know the tiebreaker situation and all this kind of stuff. Maybe ads ministry. I'm really just looking at is. This is a tune-up for the playoff team. So from that aspect I I understand what they're doing I. Think makes more sense to do this than bringing all thirty teams back. I think the conversation I still goes back to. Was this the right call I think that's still a little bit up in the air, just the situation in Florida. Itself is already unclear. Something I actually wrote about Hey Chris and I think it's interesting. Adam silver I think has been lauded for kind of the stances east taken out throughout his tenure as commissioner whether it was Donald Sterling or moving the All Star game, or even the China situation to a degree. I think those decisions were in retrospect, and even at the time a lot easier than the one He has to make right now you know I i. don't think booting a racist Donald Sterling out of the NBA alternately is. As brave as maybe it seemed at the time or or moving all star game in a city. That was you know trying to propose Anti Trans legislation. This situation is a lot more risky. Than What Adam Silver has had to deal with in the past, and that's what's fascinating to me about this is. How high is the NBA risk tolerance for making money well it. Four 's a fact about Adam silver that has been repeated to me by a number of top basketball executives that yes, Adam silver is progressive. Yes, Adam silver. Does believe in setting a good example as a League but as the NBA Commissioner Adam silver is about the bottom dollar and this return to play for the NBA look. Let's not twist it. The this is about money. This is about making good on those national television contracts that they have obligations for in bringing twenty two teams back. It gives them a chance to make good on the twenty two regional contracts that the NBA is has obligations for I. Mean if they didn't come back at all. There would be. I don't even want to count how many financial how many revocations there would be that? The NBA have deal with in the twenty twenty twenty twenty one season, so this was done overwhelmingly for financial reasons, but I I don't think. It's mutually exclusive with. Is it right to come back to play I think those both those things can be true. The NBA definitely moved the goalposts with their their criteria for coming back. If you remember back in April Adam, silver, said something to the effect of we want to see Corona virus infections trending down well to your point earlier Florida they're not trending down. In fact in recent days they have spiked with the number of new cases that have been reported, so it doesn't really fit that criteria. All that being said the NBA is doing everything humanly possible to provide a safe environment for players, families of players coaches staffers all that, so look to me. It comes down to do you want to? Get back to work under circumstances where there's no chance you can contract coronavirus if that's the case, I respect that position, but that position may not be a reality until like middle of twenty twenty. One like this is this corona virus is here to stay for the foreseeable future it'll ebb and flow, but it's not going anywhere anytime soon, so if you're waiting for that day, okay, keep weighing in the. NBA decided that they're not going. Going to wait, they're going to go to a state that has welcome professional sports. That's where Florida has done, and they're going to try to create the safest possible bubble. I'm with you on the idea that it is much easier to toss donald sterling out his ass. It is much easier to look at a bad bathroom bill passed in North Carolina and say you know what we're getting out of that state for this cycle this. This could be a defining moment if the NBA goes down there and has a seamless post-season Adam. Silver is GONNA. Look Great. The League's going great..

"It's just not a fight where the styles make sense. And it's not a fight that anyone is really clamoring for this moment you've got to British fighters in Callum and Billie Joe both titleholders. The win win. That fight would be a unified supermiddleweight champion. Why is that? Not The obvious fights. Make in the fall of twenty twenty. It's also the number one and number two in the super middleweight. Division remembers. Well subbing for the ring magazine Belt and all the that's what I was trying to show you that story. I mean I wasn't trying to save victory over Mannix by lesson before we start talking about ice picks in your eyes you know and that fight may well be made so be careful because and it's one that you'll be broadcasting on your cell phone deserve so wanna come home with ice picks or people attacking you with ice picks when you wait to that fight. 'cause I trouble is it stalemates. Isn't that contest with two variable could fighters and I love Boo Boo. By the way I mean is Is One of the guys. I love the sports Why isn't it being made? Well I think that probably still holding out full. Because there'd be no but the weird thing is billy Joe Saunders Josh Taylor and Ben Davidson rolled trading in Vegas together for the Cinco de Maya fight with canal. It hasn't had to actually be officially announced. Had it even though it was one of the worst kept secrets? In boxing we knew is about to happen. They only started trading so officially. It hasn't been announced his own so maybe officially hasn't even been announced his off. So I it's a very good question. Freddie heard right now that is actually and when we get off this cool. I'm just put a little colon to him. Well it's like if you do Billie Joe versus Android Billy Joel could lose that fight. Very easily like android is a phenomenal boxer. And if Billie Joe Loses it makes the Callum Smith fight almost irrelevant by. You might be able to rehab it over the next year. But we've seen what happens when you wait too long. Amir Khan Brooke should have fought two years ago and and now that fight is almost irrelevant in terms of of establishing any type of top fighter. I if you can do a senior circuit type of of event to be a money. Grab but right. Now you got Billie Joe has his title. Didn't doesn't coming off a great performance. Neither his Count Smith. But I think you have to strike while the iron top because there are way too many examples and you know this way too. Many examples of over marination leading to fights either not happening or becoming far less relevant when they do not agree. And I think I think what we'll see versus if if Bonello into Billy Joe Saunders doesn't go ahead. I think we will see that fight made because it will resonate Brinson and ye could put it on anywhere I mean and again. It's one of those fights the if you had to do in the small hole behind closed doors it would generate interest Certainly in the industry. And maybe you could make it a bit wider than that. There's a natural home for Billy Joe Saunders Count Smith that is Jeddah Saudi Arabia. Where Eddie HEARN LOVES TO PUT ON MEET? Your boxing shows crazy.

"Chris Mannix reporting a traditional post season is out of the question for the NBA medic reports the league is considering a truncated playoffs featuring sixteen teams at Las Vegas robust testing before and during the event would be mandatory that all players will be quarantine within the confines of designated hotels and training facilities whatever happens bugs for Chris Middleton trusts the NBA's decision makers under the third step we can to make sure do not think anybody for whatever other reasons out there right now so I mean we we play will be ready for that we don't have to be disappointed I think everybody will understand that is big and that's what this whole Kobe Bryant Tim Duncan Kevin Garnett all expected to be officially announced tomorrow as part of this twenty twenty class of the Naismith memorial basketball hall of fame selections are typically revealed a couple of basketball's final four but with sports shuts down the announcement will be televised from ESPN's studios in Connecticut the NFL intends to play a full twenty twenty season according to league executives have passed meanwhile Dr Alan stills police chief medical officer not exactly sure that'll happen still says that widespread testing would have to be available before the re opening of the league could it be contemplated so the only thing really set in stone dot is that the draft will take place April twenty third through the twenty fifth you know they seem and probably because they don't start playing games until the fall like the league most bent down we're going to get this thing done and then but even before the season starts the way they handled the draft the way they handled free agency they are not slowing down really in the NFL Greg no they might run into a brick wall though because you've got rookie mini camp that begins shortly after the draft I don't think those are going to happen and I don't think that organized team activity period will get off as it usually does you know in may and June they stack right before training camp it even part of training camp or the preseason could end up being compromised but it seems like they want to go on with the the schedule beginning September tenth but of course I got a little one way before they really need to make a decision but because of all those things that you just brought up some of said the draft shouldn't take place because the guys are gonna get drafted they're gonna get signed and they're not gonna be able to get together with the team's most likely I mean that's not very far away those O. T. A.'s that other stuff yeah right now that's part of the complaints of the GM stock around the league they would prefer to put this thing often the NFL is come back it's settled what if this gets worse what do we do it so I don't know what the right solution is but the offseason program without question will be compromised all right great Fridays with Zora Bucks digital.

"It's the best way to make sure that we keep doing this podcast week after week but first. Sergio we gotta look back man. We gotta look back at a terrific weekend in Las Vegas and one of the bigger upset because it was a it was projected to be a close fight between Tyson fury and deontay wilder. The odds weren't wide in either direction. But if you had asked anyone out there how they thought this was going to go. I don't think too many people would have said that. Tyson fury overwhelms deontay wilder physically. Takes the fight to him and forces while there's corner to throw in after the seventh round. Let's start with Tyson theories performance. What did you think of the way? Fury fought against wilder. First of all no way. No one expected that I believe. The wilder was the favourite the favorite to win that fight right. I believe ever so favor but a favorite to win the fight. Tyson fury under I mean. They're both undefeated. Tyson fury lineal champion. But what he did was special. He'll box them. The first fight. Everyone knew that and the second fight. He said he was gonNA outfight him. Usually when you have a boxer that moves around like Tyson theory uses angels. He's not the biggest puncher but he has respectable power. I mean we all knew who the punch here was and it's wilder. But man I mean fury he he walk the walk talk the talk and he punched the punch and he took the fight out of wilder man and the way he did it. I mean he made them pretty much. I mean they stopped the fight. And there's a lot of controversy. I'm sure you're going to want to touch into that. But he made them submit. Somehow someway with you. Don't need to have a towel thrown in. You don't need the referee of the doctor to stop it. Sometimes when you're fighters getting beat A. B. Nan. There's no answer for it. You're submitting little by little. There's no answer. You're you're not winning rounds. While there wasn't winning rounds I mean he hasn't. He didn't do anything to prove that he can change the fight around with one punch even though he can do it because he did in the first fight and that's why he's so upset but no man Fury Alpbach. Some outfought him. Personally I don't need to see a third fight to craziness those that Tyson fury was telling anyone that would listen. This is how I'm GonNA fight and I don't think anyone really believed him. I thought they'd sign them. I didn't really believe in either because there really hasn't been anyone that's taken the fight to Deontay wilder like that in his career. Luis Ortiz in the last tactical fight. It was a successful strategy up until he got knocked out. But I thought that was the attack that Tyson fury it was gonna take but he clearly after going twelve rounds with deontay wilder knew that he could take his power to a certain degree to get knocked down a couple of times and he knew that the best strategy was throwing a bunch of punches and backing him up. I know that wilder had said coming into the fight that Tyson furious pillow Hans but he couldn't have believed that because fury hurt him a couple of times in that first. That wasn't a case of wilder. You know just dealing with pitty patter type of guy. He knew the kind of pop that a six nine two hundred seventy three pound man had and I give credit look. It was controversial to move away from Ben Davidson his trainer that got him back from the depths of humanity to get back in the ring to wins and then you fight deontay wilder but going to sugarhill training in that cronk style. I think that had a benefit argue all the time about what was about to touch on that change I read. This is the first time. I'm going to agree. You mannix that trainer. Change was a revelation. If that's the word because I saw I saw something in theory. I didn't think he had he. He thought the puncher and we all knew that while there has been no box before fury. That's that's all. I thought he had no way that I think he was gonNA knock out and make wilder pretty. I hate using the word submit because he wanted to continue but he beat the fight out of them and to me. That's a form of submission. And he was looking around for help. He said he didn't. He was blaming everyone but himself but he just didn't have the fighting. There was no fighting his eye in the corner. I always look at the corner. How how he's reacting. With his trainer there was no fighting. And there's no instruction it was a little bit of everything that went wrong for wilder but everything went right for fury. I mean the man I said this afterwards from what he from what he thought the privacy. How you so eloquently put it. He came back from all that to become the champion. Knock off the number one heavyweight the baddest man in the planet and knock them out the way. He did that that right there. That's what legends are made of men. That and this man became a legend. Not only because of a story and everything he had to conquer but holy shit the way did it going up in weight. The way he did I mean he he has A. He has a future outside of boxing where there's motivational speaker whether it's an active right now. He's a heavyweight champion of the world are. Let's talk about some of the controversies that were part of the fight. In the aftermath of the fight in the first and most significant is mark bruins decision to throw in the towel in that seventh round. Brilliant is the assistant trainer in wilders corner. Jd's the head trainer has explained to me before and did it again after the fight that they run things differently in team wilder whereas it's more like an NFL team. Where is the head coach? Brilliant is the offense coordinator effectively saying that brilliant has more power than most assistant trainers do but Sergio Eurofighter. I don't know any assistant. Transit has the power to do something like that and throw in the towel. That's what made that decision shocking. So let's start here the decision to throw in the towel by Mark Berlin. What did you think of it at the time? And what do you think now? I thought it was the right car. And I'm speaking for the fighter. I'm speaking for the fire in Mark Berlin because J. D. if that's his name because I haven't even studied them I don't know he is. I don't know what a champion vs guy. He got wilder from the very beginning and built into a world. He's one for one while they're good for him but he doesn't have a resume he's like for instance my coach. John Montelongo he. I've had my entire career but he doesn't know boxing. Boxing trainer deemed compost. So that's what I think capping here. I respect them both equally so if one wants to fight to stop the fight you gotta appreciate that more brilliant. He's an Olympic gold medal. It's one of the greatest amateur fighters in history a two-time professional champion. What does J. D.'s done? How does he know what it feels like to be a fighting another man professional fighter to be? Have that pain to know that. There's no winning this fight. There's resignation submission all these other things he could a fighter could see another fighters is when he's lost when there's no answer for that. What the fuck is Jay? Dee's no inside the ring. He knows his men outside the ring. But what does he know inside the ring? Those were punishing punches. And not only that. You start thinking as a fighter as as a retire fighter. Now coach like like the assistant trainer Margaret. When you start thinking about the future what pass boxing. The family man. I mean there are so many tragedies that happen in the last two years five six fighters have died. One one of our watch and it's just when stuff like that happened. I wish I would've stopped it earlier. Look Wilder wasn't taking a humongous beating but he was starting to get beaten down and he wasn't in the fight. Mark Brilliant saw that. I think he made the right. Call all respect to dis for for bringing up a world champion like that. But he doesn't know what Margaret Linda's you can ask any professional fighter especially one in the championship level. If mark really make the right choice it will be one hundred percent unanimous absolutely. Yeah I mean you have to look at what. Mark Bruin was seeing at that point of the fight. I remember tweeting this at the time in the sixth round. I'm wilder and he's moving around the ring. And every time he got close to the ropes he put his arm up on the ropes to basically prop him up. That told me he was completely. That's that's bad body language for a fighter. Anytime you start boxing when your arms are up like that you'll see. The trainer slapped the end hands down. That's a sign of and I keep saying it. That's a sign of submission. That's a sign of. I'M TIRED. My legs are done on a break. Negative negative negative art. So you don't WanNa do that. That's why the reason the trade always pushed the album's down. I know look like you want to have the body language. Don't show resignation. Show the referee that you want to continue fighting. It's body language. Deontay didn't have that. But you know who did have it marked. Brilliant for noticing. Yeah and look I was I was ringside so I couldn't see or hear what was happening in the corners but I remember after that sixth-round seeing what I saw in the sixth round looking up at the big screen and just seeing the kind of engagement between wilder and decent Brio and while there had his head down he wasn't really interacting with either one of them. That told me that he was on the cusp of being done. And then I'm assuming this brillant hasn't really talked about this yet but I'm assuming brilliant saw that big right hand come in from fury and that was the straw that broke the camel's back there and look. We both know deontay wilder when a decision against Tyson fury and at that point in the seventh round. I think we had a pretty clear idea. That wilder didn't have the power anymore to land that big shot against Tyson fury. So if you're you're sitting there going all right well my can't knock this guy out. He may be able to hang in there for three. Or four more rounds. What kind of punishment is he gonNA take? In between the thing. The beautiful thing about punchers. They can end fights with one with one punch absolutely. Everyone likes to see a power punch but you know what they suck at doing surviving. You know they don't know how to survive because they're not used to being on the other side of the they're not used to being hurt they don't know how to hold onto no kill rounds. They don't know how to move around the ring. George Foreman deontay wilder named puncher after puncher. They don't know how to make how to survive when they're hurt because they're not accustomed to being hurt and fighter more. Brillon who may not have been a power punch like that. But he's been around power punchers. I mean he wasn't the Olympic team with with great heavyweights. So he knows what it's like these guys don't know how to survive these punchers. Deontay wilder was going to be loss. Only that he didn't have the amateur pedigree. That a lot of that Margaret had so even worse he wasn't going to be able to survive but credits the browns bomber look. A fighter wants to die in the ring and believe me. I believe on when he says that..

Gary Russell Jr. dominates Tugstsogt Nyambayar, retains WBC featherweight title

"Gary Russell. You know with an interesting figure. Because he's extremely talented fighter. We saw he scored a nice win against You know king tug in the mandatory fight that took place last week Everybody looks Gary. Russell has a great talent and a in a in a worthy competitor against any of these guys but he has said that he can't get the big fight now. If you can't get the big fight you take the next biggest one you can get and go out there and make seven figures every time you get in the ring for whatever guarantees are. He has decided not to do that. He wants to Fight Leo Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz findings. Your Monty Davis. Obviously that is not going to be therefore if you look down the list of guys at one twenty six or even at one thirty you know for him that our makeable that are going to be interesting to the public. There's not a lot there. He says he'd go up to one thirty five if necessary You know if there's no Leo Santa Cruz Fight. Against Tank Davis. I'll tell you a huge that at least in part of the country I live in the you know the the Washington DC Maryland. Virginia area is tank against Gary Russell. I mean one guy's from Washington and One guy from Baltimore they'd fill up any of the arenas in either city but again that's probably alongside so Gary Russell. He's kind of like a man without a country right now. He's he's got talent he's got a title he can really fight And he just doesn't have the top guy to fight against unfortunately so he's Kinda off to the side and you know he's only been fighting once a year I I would hope he would be able to find another before the end of this year if he does. I just really couldn't tell you who it's going to be against her. What kind of level? It's going to be one twenty six or one thirty Gary Russell. I think would be a threat either. "They are sports illustrate made incredible body of war. I really appreciate the integrity is well on great job. We love it. Luckily Bank Keys Kris menace. These employed by sports illustrated the announcers got it in for me. This is the crossover NBA. Podcast you have a problem with it. Build a team that can beat of hosted by the one and thank God Mannix Wes. Wilcox is here former Atlanta Hawks general manager. Nba TV analyst. All around good guy for joining me here days before the NBA trade deadline. What's up West not much Chris. How're you do you miss this time of year as a now former general manager was this? Does this get your juice going this this week? This week is the most fun of any time of year. Because you know you're focused on one thing you know what your objectives are and you have trays to try to to try to pull off You know there are other times of the year that you just you know like the draft is one of the most challenging because you're working on trades potential planning for free agency and of course draft night so this is one of those times a year that you do miss you now. You can tell me if I'm wrong on this but this is one of those times a year that it feels like everything not everybody writes. But it's certainly what I feel like I would. I write what others other guys nationally right. There's a level of truth to all of it because I mean I know a lot of assistant. Gm's just canvas the league with so if you see something like checked in on or called about chances are probably happened because everybody's kind of kicking the tires on everything. It seems like yeah. So are you talking about just the media reports and all of the room? I mean it feels like they're true because it just depends on the level of truth to it right like our how serious a team was about a phone call that it made or a potential conversation. It had one of the things I've learned doing media the last couple years is the media does a great job of getting information. And so yeah. I think there's teams do a great job of trying to turn over every single potential opportunity so a lot of what you read may not be like down the road. It may not actually happen. But is there something that created that oftentimes? Yes no though. There have been things that you read internally that are completely made up one of the most respected media members colleagues of yours reached out to me one time about something that we supposedly are. I supposedly had said that we would. It was like just. It could not have been further from the truth so there are times that it definitely is not as credible but most often. There's a lot to it. I would say this to sometimes executives and maybe this is more this might be more draft connected but sometimes executives use the media to disseminate what they're looking for or what they're trying to if the easiest way to get out there to teams but what they're willing to deal and what might be what what back in return no doubt. I mean there's there are there are teams out there. Trying to create markets and oftentimes. You have to be careful about not what is said. But it's what is what is not being said and oftentimes. That's where the story is. It's so much fun. Such a fun week to deal with and it's an interesting one this year and I want to jump in at the at the top with all the talk right now around Cling Cappella the rockets center who has three years left on his contract. Manageable money for a player of on his level around twenty million dollars. Give or take each year up the rockets they. WanNa do something. And that's kind of Darryl Maurice M. O. In Houston they they. Don't I think what they're looking for is a trading partner that will give them back assets that they can turn around and flip for something else so this is a multi tiered approach that the rockets are taking this. What do you make of Houston at this stage of the season looking to move off.

Boxing news: Andy Ruiz Jr reportedly considering Teddy Atlas as new trainer, famously strict coach who worked

"News broken last twenty four hours about who has parted ways with trainer manny robots before we get to anything else let's let's just talk about that for a second many robe liz takes eddie ruis to one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing history just like seven or eight months months ago and now he eats his way out of contention to win the rematch way overweight doesn't pay attention to many robots and now many rogue as is is out i mean what do you make of any releases decision there well it's always the trainer's fault right i mean it's never the fighters fault that's the way boxing history as for the most part but manny rojas is a very good trainer he was very honest both before and after the fight and said hey look we warned him as we move closer to the fight get it together your weight is too high you know let's really start training take this more seriously let's go let's go let's go and and released did what he did and came in fifteen fifteen pounds heavier than he did for the first fight and we all know what happened thereafter so i it's i'm not surprised because it's the trainer is almost always the fall guy for for fighter losing i haven't heard specifically what andy where we said about parting ways with his trainer i don't know if he was unhappy about the criticism that manny robe liz offered after the fight but he was being honest and and and and we welcome that as as reporters i of course chris right we wanna hear guys tell us the truth not sugar coat everything and i i think manny was honest about it and but i think he'd light you know he likes andy and and and and clearly did a great job with him a pulled off one of the biggest upsets sets in boxing history and last june so it'd be interesting to see which direction he goes in for his next trainer but i mean this is on him

"They are sports illustrate made incredible body or I really appreciate. The integrity is well on great job. We Love Luckily Bank Keys Kris menace. These employed by sports illustrated the announcers got it in for me. This is the crossover NBA. Podcast you have a problem with it. Build a team that can beat of hosted by the One and thank. God mannix Nick. Right is here first things first Sirius. Xm Radio and one of my occasional on TV nemesis. Chris what's what's the plural of Nemesis. Is there who I think. I'm not sure but I'm only one person even though I'm sure when you're arguing with me. Sometimes it feels like there's multiple people involved. It's good to see him. Sometimes it does feel like this multi there. It is good to be here recording with you just hours. After the Lakers were trampled annihilated by the Celtics I've been. I've been hitting refresh refresh refresh. I've been waiting for the annual tradition of Chris. Mannix getting Boston Celtics fans up just at the hopes up just a touch high. The I know you were saying before the year or early in the year that there may be a big man away from being able to make the NBA finals. I assume now your belief is they can make the NBA Finals as presently constituted. And maybe win. Am I correct your incorrect? I having seen them get trampled. Mostly by Milwaukee. A few days prior the bucks to me are still class but tomb. We'll let me for an organ. Make this a celtics thing no. Let's do it incited to moves. The Celtics should make in the next month and a half trade for `Davis Burton's in Washington terrific three point shooter. Give UP THE MEMPHIS. Pick to go and get them. That's probably going to be like the teens. Something like that on the Memphis quasi good deal the memphis pick and some small piece because Bertos make a ton of money get bertone's he's a floor spacing guy make shots off the bench. Resign him at a pretty big number next year and have him as part of your and at the buyout market sign. Another member of the Washington was good. Get bought out. Yon Mimi Oregon. Yawn Mimi bring in Dave Davos. Bertone's then you're cooking and you give yourself a chance. I've always had the belief that the more wizards you can add to your team better. Do winning a championship. Can I throw a different? Yes sake trade at you. Yes especially now that the Memphis pick for a long time. I know people thought might be one day a number one pick or top five not so much now that that's in play the Celtics and they were great yesterday and Jaylen Brown who I mocked the contract extension that that extension looks better and better by the day. I have to concede that point. We'll see how it ages over the next couple of years but through the first probably pretty well good continues his up it will I? I WANNA see Kimball. Obviously he's been awesome for them But when I watch him and I feel like their one piece away I think they should go after Anthony Davis. I think he could really fit with what they're trying to do. And it seems like something that really I think Danny Aines should look into. Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis okay. I think it'd be good. I know he wasn't very good yesterday. Maybe you can against the Lakers. Maybe you can get him with. The stock is down. Now I know I know Danny. Probably wouldn't trade for him unless he committed to a long term contract. Include Marcus smart by the way Marcus. Smart wicked good. Marcus smart did he. Eleven threes the other day. Did I think he's got? It has to have been the highest percentage of threes for someone to twenty shots in a game. Twenty shots eighteen. Three point attempts to that. Well that's what it was wild that yeah that's crazy good friend because once upon a time he was the worse shooter in the SC was and last year. He shot like a really respectful number. Thirty four thirty five thirty something like that which was great and had an eleven three game. I couldn't believe it but no listen. This is people. Think I don't like the Celtics and it's not true. It's mostly because of me. Well there's there's a few things I I just got tortured history with Boston sports in general but I I love Janas the boxer my preseason pick to make the finals last year there my pick to make files and I thought they were going to roll to the finals. Till that triple overtime was triple overtime. Double overtime game three against the against the raptors and they're up to nothing and all series flipped but I really even though I don't like being wrong would love it if the Celtics could over achieve to make the finals because nothing would be better. Then if Celtics finally breakthrough again post Keiji era only to meet Lebron the NBA finals. We can sweep their ass out of the playoffs again. That's kind of would be the perfect way for the season end instead. I think it's going to end with Lebron versus Johnson the finals but we're GonNa have ourselves Celtics for great yesterday. Lebron was not very good and the Lakers lost second time in three games after a really good win against Houston game. I actually was at down in Houston this week. Great Game Against Houston. I wanted to touch on some of the rockets towards the end mocked one of my takes on the elevator on the way save. Let's say there's a long? Is it going to be a longer? Podcast I promise you America. Chris Mannix you think he's had some wild takes before the rockets take Chris. Mannix is about to unveil is all time galaxy brain take so we can get to that later on top of the Western Conference right now. You've still got the Lakers. With a comfortable lead over the clippers but those two teams one to win and the clearly the class I think. Oh let's be fair to the Nuggets Jazz while the nuggets fair to the jazz. They've been uneven most of the year. They're they're they're picking some momentum upright his nuggets jazz-clippers same exact record. All thirty thirteen with the clippers. Potentially could so. You could say the clippers during the second you say. They're in fourth third as well. What have right. But I look at the Clippers record with like twenty four and eight as I'm recording. I mean they're great with collide in the lineup. He's just he just doesn't like to play doesn't like to play all that off. Let's those teams. I'm still convinced they're going to meet in the conference finals. Are they either both those teams where you expected them to be right? Now the Lakers. I was surprised by how fast they started. I mean I thought they'd get off to a good start giving the schedule but that early December stretch where they started to win games against good teams. That surprise me and the clippers when Kawai plays. They're really really good when he doesn't they're kind of average show. Yes so the I I think both of these teams are exactly where I projected him for the year. Which was the Lakers? Being the best team in the West and they clearly are. I don't know why people would be surprised at them. Being awesome they have two of the six players and basketball and their best players. Actually play all the time which is helpful. I Know Anthony Davis has got hurt on so missed. Five Games without wasn't a load management issue of Lebron's played forty one of their forty three games. They had to me shocking. Win The one of the Games. Lebron missed the game against okay. See we're no libranoy? Anthony Davis I think Ronda was hurt for that game as well. Not Rondos any good Your comes Kaku and they were right and it was one of the few good Kyle. Kuzma games the clippers. Also you know this. I picked them to finish fourth in the West and lose in the first round. I do. I think that they will lose in the first round. I think that is entirely independent or dependent on what they who they draw. Like for for instance. I think Dallas is a great story. I don't think Dallas winning a playoff series this year. I don't think there yet ready for that. And I think that Luca. Who is my third favorite player basketball and you and I were on the same page book you know the IT feels like the folks anyone that actually cared at all about international basketball was saying so. It's not like I was unique in this. And if people care enough to listen to this podcast a lot of people that Luke was the clear cut number one. Pick of that draft. It was I D Andre. Eight and he's going to have a really nice career and he he's a really good player and trae. I love trae. Luca was the only guy who could have been what he was and his numbers. This you're out of this world. I still don't think there yet. Ready to be a real contender. I think it's probably another year supporting cast around them. They were playing over their heads a little bit early in a playoff series. I feel like you just throw two people. Luca repeatedly and say we dare KRISTAPS. Good Luck Daria. So yeah the clippers were to get like the Mavericks in the first round. I think they'd win that series. I don't think they're better than the rockets. The rockets are playing. I think that matchup is terrible for the clippers and the rockets are playing terribly right. Now's not a good time to be pro. Is that matchup? Terrible for the clippers Well they've lost both the Times they've Larraizar. They're one and two against the clippers. I think I also think. Here's reverend key in on that specific match. Give the bigger point. The thought process was the clippers would be the best defense in the NBA. And the reason. I pump the brakes on the clippers hype was. I just can't remember a defense post Jordan's bulls. That was a great great defense without a real rim-protector and what Jordan's Bulls had was arguably the three best perimeter defenders in the entire league and people said well clippers might have that same thing but the game has changed so immensely since then and so. We've seen the clippers. Is there not a great defensive team? They're good defensive. Team top ten defensive team right. Yeah but they were supposed to be the number one defense the them in Philly. Who's supposed to be those two teams philly once they got Horford and phillies all different masks for different reasons discounting ZUBEC- as a rim protect. Oh look he's got he's got problems but they're mostly like perimeter problems. He's not great defending pick and rolls. That's a huge problem team defensively but he is. I think he's been a decent rim-protector for this. So here's here's I guess. My other issue with the clippers is they have two of the best two way players in the league. Inqui- Paul George. No one can deny that. I I my issues with Kawhi unrelated to how good he is when he actually plays but all their other key guys are designated hitters. Patrick Beverley is stupendous. On one. End of the court Lou. Williams is great on the other end of the court if they were the same person..

AI Hiring, Never Retiring: Working in the 21st Century

"Hunting for a new job is one of the resolutions. A lot of folks make starting off the year and many hiring managers have new budgets. And start ramping up recruiting after the holidays slowdown right now the way most people go through that processes not very different from how it was done in the past checking for job postings online sending and cover letters and resumes but with all the data out there about each one of us. What's the future of hiring gonNA look like reporter Hookah shellman found out? It's a New Year for many of us. Time to look for new job your update you're linked in scrappy social media. And then if all goes as well you get an interview hoping to make a first impression but turns out some companies already have very good impression of who you are the amount of information that people have on candidates before they actually arrive to the interview which can freak some people out because the idea of the for instance our digital footprints reputation could be processed and translated into an inside or an inference of your potential or talent more than than it is. Today is quite that creepy in a way. Tomas Chamorro premise is a professor of psychology Columbia University and the chief talent scientists that manpower group. He's not talking about programs. That pre filter resumes linked in for keyboards and skills. This goes much deeper artificial intelligence. This can be used to discern your personality through traces you leave online. And he says that our personalities embedded in almost anything we do for example apple the music that you listen to says a lot about your typical emotional states your personality your level of interest in different things your curiosity leveler intelligence level things like uber or lift ratings say a lot about how cordell agreeable friendly or pleasant you are basically. There's some is if you nice to driver you'll be nice to work with their already. Artificial intelligence based tools that can generate personality profiles from people's linked. It didn't in seconds. So why would we care. Tema says personality and cognitive abilities are becoming more important for employers compared to self-reported skills and work experiences. That's because companies keep changing their business models and they need employees. That could keep up. You really need to accept the fact that if a lot of the the jobs of the future don't exist today. The best thing we can do is not train people for specific hard skills or knowledge areas or expertise but identify if I whether they are likely to be good learners in the future and whether they're adoptable companies could of course use traditional personality. Test ask you might have heard of meyers brakes or disc or the big five you know choosing descriptions like people look up to me. I tend to be a kind person I accept live as it comes. Do you agree or disagree. These tests have been used for decades and most generally accepted as reliable measures of personalities now tech startups have developed algorithms that use artificial intelligence to create a personality analysis instantly without asking any questions like the company crystal analyzes. The words phrases and data points on someone's Lincoln profile and correlates with personality test results from people who have similar similar words phrases and data points. They used a bunch of the tests that we talked about another company. Humanistic used the disappointment and the big five. Both companies are using natural language processing tools. But do they work. We started by running mannix algorithm over Thomas Twitter feed this is you and this is based on your twitter so your analytical cautious deliberate and then we looked at Lincoln using the same companies tool so now you are influential energizing an impulsive in here. You were an analytical cautious and deliberate shortly so I would say more impulsive Paul Save than cautious and deliberate and the two are of the opposite extreme you know so same algorithm very different results for the thing. There is an element. amando throw everything against the wall and see what sticks here okay. So what does the other company crystal say about him. Based on his linked in this is one is better direct assertive and competitive. I think is better than court shows. Delivered speak very directly or bluntly yes stay. Stay focused on one point. Not necessarily I mean I'd like to jump from one to assert yourself with confidence definitely not as spent the last ten years in writing books on how we shouldn't mistake confidence for competent. So please don't assert yourself with confidence. There are trade-offs here right and I the thing that this doesn't seem as accurate as a traditional science based or validated assessment despite these inconsistencies Tomas still things. There's something here but other experts in the hiring field a less forgiving. There's no uh-huh science behind this. There's no real research that supports deriving personality from social media behavior. This is John Scott. He's he's an organizational psychologist bills assessment tools so companies can find the best possible hires. It's something that we can discuss it cocktail parties but I would would never in a million years attempt to derive someone's personality from that and then use that to make predictions beached out to crystalline. Human Tick Kris told told us that there are no independent studies but they're validate their tests internally. They say they ask every user how accurate the predictions are so when Iran Thomas Profile through crystal. The system asked me if it was accurate. She mandich said that the adjectives describing people's personalities in their reports are subjective objective that they could change on the fly and they said you can't judge the accuracy of the system by looking at one profile. They're also disputed. You did that. There are no vigorous. large-scale visas studies on the subject and pointed to a research article comparing computer judgments of personality to human judgments creating personality profiles with the help of. Ai Remains controversial. But John says that technology can help in a different way. He says one of the best ways to predict how well someone will do in a given job is to test them doing their job in a virtual reality simulator. How do you predict future behaviour? You create the future. You place the individual in that future and present them with a variety of challenges and see how they do against those challenges us so imagine instead of having an interview where you talk about how well you can do the job. The employer hands. You had said twenty of right into the deep end. You could take CNN applicant for a CEO save for a an energy company so one possible scenario is that they're holding strategy meeting and everybody in the room gets texts that there it has been a cyber attack on their nuclear plant. What are you going to do? How are you going to face that? And that's not just your stakeholders in your customers. It's the government that gets gets involved in that national security so you could set up a press conference have the individual present their ideas on how they're going to manage this John says this virtual virtual job simulation could be automatically scored by an algorithm just like video game. Technology could work for any job though you could see how you can scale back to new entry level jobs as well providing different sorts of challenges associated with their roles in immersive simulation kind of a way and and John says the tech wouldn't have to stop their companies could combine. The are based headsets with wearable technology. which could record a job? Candidates biometric metric data nervous and you hardest basing they had set would be able to detect that those sweaty palms registered eye contact measurable and all of that data about things citing stress. You feel will be used to assess how well you suited for the job. Since most of us have very control over our bodies we actions. This idea seems pretty controversial. A simple rule in my view is if the criteria or riveria bowls or fuck doors. You are trying to use for your decision whether to hire someone or not are completely out of somebody's control. It's probably not ethical. You get into areas where it may start to feel more like a medical test and you cannot use a medical test at the front door. For Selection election purposes an Illinois law takes effect this month requiring companies to notify job. Candidates may use AI based video interview tools And legislation mandating companies to inspect their algorithms for bias is under consideration in Congress so eventually lawsuits relations could put put the brakes on this new world of artificial intelligence and hiring

"They are sports illustrate made incredible body of war. I really appreciate the integrity is well on great job. We Love Luckily Bank keys. Kris menace these employed by sports illustrated. The announcers got it informed. This is the crossover. Nba podcast. You have a problem with it. Build a team that can beat of hosted by the One and thank. God mannix all right. We'll come back to the crossover. Nba podcast you for joining us. This week. At a great episode lined up for you and guess who is in studio. We're actually sitting across which we were in fake studio together last couple I thought you didn't disclose that infringe don't but sometimes like the audio can be so little off where people like. You can't be in the same rights sounded like we're in the same room. Did it though better than like a phone call. I what I find funny is when you text me about coming on the pod and then you say oh. I'm going to be in New York will be in studio together. You think that that is a positive like oh which should be more enticing to come on the PODCASTS. Because I'll be there. We'll be in the studio together quite the contrary well. Hansel now before the podcast which were I would like to remove that from my mouth right if you want to hear more about that conversation. Check the boxing podcasts. Later in the week. It's can I join you? You're welcome to be a friend of the boxing pot as well dual pocket under some soccer to maybe ice Sacramento. Not believe that you were quite the basketball player too. I saw on the broadcast on Sunday. The side by side picture of you watch dominant. He'll watch every yes he's the reason I worked twenty one. Yes all right we should get the real stuff because no one cares about the dominique same level. Yeah Yeah Yeah thanks. Let's talk about Sunday's game. Kyrie Irving makes his return. I gotTa Tell You. This is why you are watching the broadcast. This guy was watching fertilizer John Collins and see what he was doing no. I don't know if you were just interested in watching that's on yes. I- nets on yes number one broadcast team in the NBA. Except route goes on takes a slight dip. But you know Brooklyn's my boxing broadcast partners. Well I know in gradients here. Arched number is is just the worst but believe that got kyrie. Irving makes his return. A lot of I was a little surprised he came back. Be Honest with you win. All at what point at what point like when the counter turn to January. It's like all right. We're now into two thousand twenty. The team is not championship contender. This is clearly a significant problem. Gone well past the idea that Cairo was ducking plank in Boston. That happened a month and a half ago Do you now realize had. This is your players. Don't duck especially guys like Kyrie. Kyrie wants to go back to Boston and tour fifty like rats. What he wants to write always what he wanted to do. But I was surprised like given the shoulder injury. It didn't sound like he was getting much better. But then all of a sudden a few days ago he's back practice doing five one five and now he's giving it a go. What was your reaction to Kyri? Making his return on. Well I think we learned a lot more information when he spoke to the media A few days into the new year in him basically telling us that he was struggling with this because it wasn't getting better and he was going to see different specialists. Who was trying to figure out what was going on. And then finally got a cortisone shot on December twenty fourth and. That's where the trajectory of things his progress his progress You know Just everything how he was going about his rehab started to improve and so I think just as soon as hearing he spoke he said he he he kind of Said. I'm going to give it a week and see how it feels he. Of course throughout all of this was trying to avoid having surgery In went in by all accounts what we were hearing once because he'd had been doing non contact drills and he'd been on the court he been doing a lot of things but just didn't feel Doctors include everyone that he was cleared for context so got. The cortisone shot was feeling better in in that week. The Nets due to their schedule had a couple good practices And he was tremendous and back to you know the Kyri as we saw the other night I will say this. I was not surprised that he played You never know. I think with injuries. I think all speculation people from the outside not knowing what's going on I think can be really irresponsible. So the fact that he did play I was what I was surprised by in just was tremendous and fun to watch and I know Atlanta's not a world beater and of course trae young not playing just how highly efficient he was how fluid he seemed how you look at US numbers. He was ten of eleven from the field. Played just under twenty minutes. So the the point is this all just he. He looked so comfortable and like he'd been playing You know over the course of the last effective. Heedless missed the last two months and so that to me was was like wow. He looked like he looked very surprising. Given how much time that he's because I would say that about any player anytime you're not on the court playing you would expect there'd be a transition period. Yeah look for the I think one of things that might help ease his transition back into playing for the team is back that they had bad. You know prior to him coming back. I mean what was it losses in a row before the Miami? Seven seven zero And this was like on top of November. They started win a little bit and all those stories came out about our here. The Nets numbers without Kyrie Irving here. Their numbers with Kyrie. Irving people would say while they better without CA- which always nonsense I mean the guy. It's all nonsense but I also in in I've spoken about this at a decent amount. I think none of that ever took into account so he played eleven games early on not took an account. How many moving. Parts and new part there were on the roster in it of itself so for any team any new roster compilation. You're going to have a process where it takes time for guys to get used to each other so I think throughout the course of that care sliver of course getting hurt Throughout the course of when they were playing well a lot of it to me was guys get like a Gareth getting more comfortable Taurean Prince. Getting more comfortable Spencer Dinwiddie was not good at the beginning of the season and then he sort of playing in an all star level and obviously some of this created opportunity need playing time however I think there was so much focus and emphasis on what they were with and without Kyri that it didn't take into account at all just by nature. A new team with new pieces sometimes takes hot. But that's always going to be the case with Kyrie. After what happened in Boston you know is always going to be a contrast between what he did with. The team does with him on the floor with him without on the floor and I would say for any not just any star more so though because like there's the as Boynton surges. Maybe the Boston the established. But it's kind of established. Sort of like I kind of looking at the Celtics are and the fact that Kemba lights with the Anti Kyrie in Boston personality. And saying like you know. Kyrie's got a lot to prove in season like this and nobody questions his talent but it's the chemistry stuff and one thing I'm looking for in the next month if he continues to play the passing right like before we went out of the lineup. And that's I think we're twenty-seventh in the NBA and passing and then he goes out and the passing improves. Like does the ball stick too much when Kyrie's in the floor because he can do some unreal things with the ball. But that's not what this team needs. You gotta get everybody involved. You GotTa Keep Spencer Dinwiddie on this train. That he's on You. GotTa get cares. Levert back into Bacteria guys like Jared Allen and Joe Harris. Get their touches like. That's a big thing to watch. I think for Cairo the next month. I think that's a big thing to watch. I think that's a big thing to watch for any team in any offense however in looking at that and I think that was another positive to draw from the game against Atlanta in just the first game bet just how well the ball moved how everyone was getting touches. Everyone was involved. There was a ton of balance In in terms of spreading that out I do think though there's a certain balance of we even looked at some numbers of usage rates and comparisons of what Spencer Dinwiddie was doing and how much the ball was hit in his hands. How many ISOS? The Nets have been utilizing whether it was spencer whether it was torn reprints. you name it even when. Kyrie was not playing so again. I think I think it goes to. There's different ways there's different kind of viewpoints of taking a look at the ball sticking or isolation plays or when guys are going one on one versus is this a part of the fluidity of the offense so I think that that that'll be a major thing but that's that's a part of Kenya. Choson the coaching staff's job. How do we make sure everyone is involved? Do you think that there's pressure on Kyrie too? I mean look not win at Milwaukee or even a Boston type of level but to to prove that you can be the man on a team that wins with his group. Life is three months. Three plus months left in the regular season. What kind of pressure to think is on? What should the expectations be for the nets team with Kairouan? I I think there's a difference between pressure. I think there's a there's differentiating factors between pressure between expectations between goals In what this team is trying to do and I think obviously with Kyrie back. I do think it's such a major factor. Curiously vert being back is well. I think the fact that those to their time coincided together being out is something to take note of the fact. That liver wasn't playing as well. I think this team believes I'm not sure. You know looking at the standings looking to schedule. How much time is left can? Can you end up catching their in? What the should have this up the eighth eighth eighth spot. Now right behind the spot stinks like the The seven seven there in the seventh seventh just moved to Ha- but they were but I think theoretically your five year about five games out of the six. I think you look at you. Know Five Games six year. Actually see your eight games behind number three Miami so looking at Toronto theoretically goes your way too I mean how would who's like ten or eleven in that spot? I mean how far they behind Kaga was ten. Charlotte is nine so you got Charlotte. Charlotte is nine and they tear in the All Star Team Charlotte in their five games behind seven police. Therefore they're they're the four and a half games behind Orlando so some wiggle room there. I mean I think it obviously think about making the playoffs but I think he I think you theoretically make you still in your heads I think you you. I don't know what pressure you would look at her. Expectations should be but that four spot is that four spot available that four spot open to. You might be like you. But that's my point like I. I'm not sure internally Where the goals would be set at this point. I think it's less about less about standings less about where you land in the east more about. Are we improving team? Are we collectively get all of your questions? That are still questions of. What is our offense? Look like how was our ball movement. How are we making sure that we're balancing out? We have a now this this depth of player. We looked Kenny Atkinson. Who was looking for bodies before and now he's able to comfortably go ten deep in his rotation How do we make sure everyone is playing at their best?.

Houston Rockets gear no longer sold on Chinese sites

"Well began on Friday with rockets general manager Darryl Lori putting out a tweet that was an image that expressed support for the Hong Kong Freedom Movement the controversy began when the rockets Maury fired off this tweet fight for freedom stand with Hong Kong that statement of support for hypocrisy protesters was seen as an affront to the teams Chinese fan base tweet was quickly deleted but the damage was already done Tillman for the her of the Houston Rockets this does the rockets very quickly teams owner tweeting more he does not speak for the Houston Rockets China reacted strongly they condemned Daryl's comments China's council the General in Huston urge the team to clarify and immediately correct mistakes any statement on Sunday is the NBA there was shock at just how big a story this has become and now we have a geopolitical incident that was affected really sparked with one tweet Chris Mannix you've been covering the story for sports illustrated do you have any idea why Daryl Morey tweeted support for Hong Kong all of a sudden no I've known Daryl Morey for a longtime he's an incredibly smart guy I don't know what was the impetus for the tweet and it's interesting that he would do that just because Daryl's been the GM of the rockets for a long time and Darryl knows full well the influence of the rockets in the NBA on China Darryl is the GM of a team that was the home of Ya Ming one of the biggest international stars ever so he knows exactly what kind of effect this is going to have and he went out there and did it all the same aside from China getting angry have there been any consequences for the NBA well ten cent which has a long standing deal with the NBA they stream the majority of the NBA Games they're responsible for the close to five hundred million viewers that are watching NBA Basketball in China they announced that they will stop showing Houston Rockets Games the Chinese Basketball Association which ironically is run by Ming at this point they said that they were cutting ties with the Houston Rockets its sponsors affiliated with China pulled away from the rockets so anything Chinese effectively severed their ties with the rockets in a very short period of time okay so China got mad the rockets owner tried to sweep it under the rug I saw rockets players trying to deal with this James Hardie it was like apologize we love we love no plane you know we appreciate the support that they give us individually in as an organization so we love you but how did the NBA itself react all the NBA's reaction wasn't great we reported the NBA statement saying we recognize that the views expressed the Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey have deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China which is regrettable it really this is supposed to be the woke league they did say in that kind of word salad of a statement that Darryl had the right to say anything he wanted but they said that he had to write saving educated on the matter and that rang a little hollow with some people so wasn't a very strong statement in the NBA face pretty swift backlash Senator Ted Cruz Texas Republican said the NBA is quote shamefully retreating in pursuit of big money Democratic presidential candidate who Castro says the US shouldn't allow American citizens to be bullied by authoritarian government they walk it back at the NBA walked that statement back very quickly so you'd you know Adam Silver who was over in Asia anyway as part of these international games that are taking place right now he made a much more forceful state in a statement that frankly better reflects I think what the NBA really stands for the long held values of the are to support freedom of expression and certainly freedom of expression by members of the NBA Community and in this case they're more as the general manager of the Houston Rockets enjoys dat right as one of our employees I understand that there are consequences from that exercise of an essence his freedom of speech and we will have to live with those consequences in the NBA coaches like Steve Curry Gregg Popovich takes wrong positions on domestic issues Gregg Popovich was quoted calling Donald Trump a soulless coward wonder what the people sick about who votes good for him where they're line is how much they can take where does the morality and decency kick in NBA didn't have anything to say on that publicly so the NBA really can't take a position on Daryl morey saying what he said publicly so the NBA initially kind of bungling their reaction they recovered pretty quickly and put out a statement that I think better reflects positions how're the NBA state Vince perceived in China it seems like you know anything short of Daryl Morey being fired and his comments being disavowed is not going to satisfy the Chinese government the Chinese Basketball Association or anybody that might be involved with this story they came out with some statements of their own saying eh agreed with the NBA's position on this but the NBA has stood pretty firm and that's really all they can do at this point there's a good chance that the NBA loses some money as a result of this but in the grand scheme of things the NBA doesn't need that money to survive so it's a bad situation the end I would like no part of but it doesn't really affect their bottom line so who needs who more here does does the NBA China does China need the NBA more I would argue that China needs the NBA more than the NBA needs China I mean China can't walk back decades of NBA basketball being in Deuce to its population and more than a billion people the NBA proudly touted the number of people that play basketball in China it's three hundred million they talk about the number the watch basketball in China it's just under five hundred million about twenty one million people watch game six of the NBA finals this past year that's an astronomical number even for a domestic viewership you can't just take that away from people in not expect people to want it back there really isn't a alternative in China they have the Chinese Basketball Association but it's nowhere near the level of basketball that the NBA plays on these stars from the NBA from Lebron James James Harden to Steph curry they are close to household names in China people by their sneakers they wear their jerseys he's but it's still unclear exactly how far China's willing to take this do you think right now the NBA is regretting how open it is on speech I mean the NBA has proudly empowered its players to speak up to be political Lebron's spoken up a lot on race steph curry and some of the other warriors have spoken out against trump coaches give political speeches can the NBA walk that back when comes to China when it's so encouraged here no the NBA can't walk any of this back in they have to live with situations like this they simply can't turn around and create new policy that says players can't speak on political issues or social issues and frankly I don't believe the NBA would do that the NBA's organization has established itself as a progressive one knows just back in two thousand sixteen when the NBA pulled an all star game out of Charlotte because the League disagreed with the North Carolina Bathroom Bill they've Asian themselves as a league willing to take stands on these types of things frankly I think the NBA relishes the attention that it's players get for taking stands on issues like this so behind the scenes maybe there's some conversation taking place some reminders about just how much money is being brought in in foreign markets but overall the NBA's not gonNa stop anyone from saying anything about any particular issue the

Pastured poultry is vulnerable to climate change

"I'm doctor Anthony License and this is climate connections. Cows are not the only animals going out to pasture to meet the demand for more humanely raised chicken. Some farmers are now raising poultry outside in movable pens eating grass and bugs and getting fresh air and Sunlight Jeff Mannix is with virtual company which produces poultry feed and organic farm products. He says being outside is good for the birds but it also makes them vulnerable to extreme weather during drought. There are fewer insects for them to eat and it's harder for the chickens to stay cool. There's nothing green out there so if ever really down green grass and felt how cool it makes you feel in a drought year. We don't have that but too much rain can also stress chickens and the ground is wet. The poultry altria constantly going to be in a state of mild hypothermia as the moisture is drying off of their body their body core temperatures are not going to be at the right levels manning's encourages farmers to provide a rain shelter and get chickens up off the cold wet ground even if it's up on slats pallets or whatever they're going. GonNa be a lot more comfortable less stressed more healthy so he says pasture raised chickens can thrive but as the climate changes farmers must act to protect their flocks climate connections is produced by the Yale Center for Environmental Communication. Without Kevin Durant, Game 4 is must-win for Warriors

"Talking NBA finals with Chris, Mannix Klay Thompson who missed game three will play game four Kevin Durant whom this the last eight games will not play game. Four Steve Kerr said there's a good chance Katie playing game five or six Klay Thompson spoke about what it would mean if miss the finals entirely. Well, it suck if Kevin can't come back. I mean, I still think we'd have a good chance to win the finals. But obviously. That takes a huge hit. Think it would make us to cut favor anymore without him, you know teams very good. We just love the candor of the Golden State Warriors, like as a team like Klay, whatever. But dream on Jay handed. Steph is usually pretty Cantu. I love that team like is this. Well Kerr's as well, who is the favourite in this series of Katie doesn't return? Oh, it's oh I mean, I still again, we can have different conversation on Monday. If Klay Thompson comes back and looks exactly like the Klay Thompson, we saw before the injury. But if he is significantly slowed it's impossible to look at this series and say Toronto isn't the favorite now we discussed this yesterday. I disagree with Jeff Van Gundy said when he said that this war is team wasn't a playoff team, but it certainly isn't a final team, and it's probably not a team that gets out of the Western Conference as currently constituted so without Kevin Durant. And with a hobble Klay Thompson, Toronto is, is a clear favourite in my eyes. Tonight. What's important is where is clay and not only wears he during the game.

NBA Reveals Refs Missed 17 Calls for Rockets, 11 for Warriors in Game 1

"About officials during the NBA playoffs is nothing new, but the rockets apparently took it to the next level yesterday. Preparing a report to show that the refs cost them a trip to the NBA finals last season. We'll see how all this noise about bad calls affects tonight's game two and the rest of this series. But there's no easy answer. When it comes to officiating. James harden, something we talked about yesterday at great length. He's physical. He's unorthodox. He draws. Contact. He likes contact. He's always going to get a lot of calls. But the question is is he getting the right calls. It's important to remember. None of this is new because players and coaches have been complaining forever. You can Google Tim Duncan Joey Crawford or watch Phil Jackson, Pat, Riley work, the officials, and if you think Hardin is hard to officiate imagine trying to officiate a game, which akilah Neil. There's no perfect solution here, and you can't blame the rockets for at least trying to gain an advantage here a tight competitive series, and it may come down to how it's called. And it won't be the first time for sport. That's very difficult to officiate Steve Kerr had a little bit of fun with this yesterday at his press conference. He had this to say about fouls Kolding game on the focus should be on. Team's plane. Extremely hard me watching the he'll bowl teams just got after and competed. But you know, we just watched the tape upstairs. You don't think there were ten calls. We thought we got fouled in this is out goes, and every coaching illegal tell you the same thing, you watch the tape, and you hope man, that's that's. It's the nature game. It's it's very very difficult to officiate an NBA game. There's all kinds of gray area. And you know in the modern game. You know, a lot of players have have gotten really good at deception creating contact. Okay. Steve Kerr thrown out some verbal bouquets their complementing the officials. How would he feel if they lost game one? You know, they missed a lot of calls out there. The NBA has this two minute video review were they look at the calls. They missed and they admitted that they miss him calls in this game. My problem with the the rockets is let's live in the now, let's not be looking back to game seven last year. I got a problem with that. You gotta be Golden State. And it's now it's not you know, you guys caused us the NBA finals last year. Okay. How did you guys shoot? You miss twenty seven consecutive three pointers in that game. Was that the officials? Yes, that's because they were fouled apparently apparently all of them. What do they shoot like eight for forty four from three point range in game seven last year on your home floor? Yes. You didn't have Chris Paul? You should've won that game. But don't live in the past. And if you wanna bring attention to this now now all of a sudden, you're going down into your basement into your lab, and you're looking at all this. Video and say look at all of these miss calls. You had. Okay. The officials. Are you saying the officials are favoring the Golden State Warriors? Are you saying that's what I want to hear are these just bad officials is their favouritism?
