EVO 2020 was cancelled

"Yvo Twenty twenty has been canceled due to various sexual abuse allegations. Yvo Is the biggest annual fighting game tournament in the world, and even with the covid nineteen issues plaguing everyone on the planet. The tournament was soldiering on with plans to make it fully online. Earlier this week, however that all fell apart, and in order to learn more about it, I called on Imran Khan to explain everything Imron. Come into the gaming ride home show again for having me Yvo was canceled. And I just want you to give me the full story. What happened? Why was it canceled? Everything start from the beginning, so ego is the biggest fighting tournament in America Kinda the biggest in the world. There's like some discussion about that at this point, but ego is basically where fighting games have been aspiring to for the last twenty thirty years and listening started in the ninety S. This year, obviously because of covid kit have their usual Mandalay Bay Las Vegas big gathering of fighting game players. So this year they ended up canceling I place. Eve Online Eve online was a different thing where the. Mainly, got games together with like Netco like mortal Kombat eleven and them fighting her indie game that was originally based on my little pony, but basically it was A. It has to evolve brand that could stay around despite not being the big mass gathering tournament that they expect over the last couple of weeks. There's been a bigger. industry-wide movement to out sexual predators in gaming and the gaming industry, and some companies have been hit harder than that are with that bubis off for example, but for the most part it's. It's not a huge thing within the FTC. Because the FTC's always kind of had a reputation of like. Being a bit more open with their sexual harassment and it's always like. It's never been to a level of. A mass critical mass. Joey quilter this past week yesterday in for yesterday in fact was outed by a player. Named He's just does mikey. He goes online and is after the tag is crack. Peron but George Taylor. Who is the head of the current? President Vivo who founded it with Tommy Tony Kanaan. was outed for experiences when he was. Close, to twenty, where they were southern golf land, which is an amusement park in l. a.. That mikey accused him of basically. Paying money to young kids to take their shirts. Germany polls mikey related experience where he said quarter. Paid him twenty dollars to see his genitals inside a restroom and bought him pornography so. It's IT'S A. It's a larger thing that when you look at it from the perspective of not a child who just thinks they're having fun. It's real creepy, but what is conditions came out. Other people's Front, also coming out of the woodwork, saying like more finding old chaser people were talking about doing these things, but not naming names, and now that it's out. The floodgates are broken out. Yvonne immediately went. No, WE'RE GONNA put on administrative leave and check this out, so I mentioned Tom. Tony Kennedy before their more famous like they are obviously co-founders of ego, but there are more famous right now for being developers of Product L. at riot games so. They had to step in for this and go okay. We're looking at this right now. We're investigating and seeing what happens. It did not take very long before nether realm. I believe the first one like say. Are Involved with ego involvement in that sense means we don't WanNA game there. We're not going to earn any money towards prize pools. We're not doing any advertising which is fairly big deal. Arguably moral combat was like the lead game for that tournament. Right for the online tournament. Yes, Merle come at usually has a hard time with like the in person tournament. Fighting community hasn't really take to that game too well, but as an online net code game like for example, smash brothers was canceled for Eve online because the net code. Isn't that good, so this is more time to shine. The actual like really arguably was streetfighter as it is every year. This year. Are Not meeting her, but a little bit. After another canceled COP CANCELED IN ONCE CAPCOM cancels gets away from ego. Then that's that's the ballgame lets. Everything goes away soon after main sex developers of them biting heard who this is their big chance to become A. Kind of a household name and if I didn't need community, they cancelled. Bay Namco canceled and ran into that ego are the canons came out with a message from as ego saying? Hey, we were cutting for joy color. He is not president anymore. In the future, he will have zero involvement with the organization this not he's going to not be on. He's going to be on the board, or he'll be the FCC or he'll still kind of tournaments. They're cutting it off completely. Shortly after that they also that announced, we can't under these circumstances and this change in organization also do evil online in a couple of weeks in August. A month or in August? I. Know that screws over a lot of people, but. It seems like honestly the best. Call right now of. You'RE GONNA have to go through with work. That joy has done or you're going to have to. Try It's from scratch. Cobble together in event that takes at least a year to actually set up and try to get together in a couple of weeks. Yeah, I mean they just they basically. Got Rid of the boss in the most public way, possible right I mean it's it's you can't just like recover from that in a matter of weeks. Really Yeah, it's. It is one of those things of a lot of this is. Probably high time for the funding community insert reckoning with a lot of these things, because it's an issue for a number of years, it was I. I don't know if you recall but a about eight years ago, there was a street fight across capcom across Tekken. Show online, and it ended up ending as a result of some sexual harassment claims, and those a big divide in the community about like whether sexual harassment was a just a part of the culture or not and. Stuff like this doesn't help that argument. No I mean I like you, said earlier I mean like. Feels like the right call to elevate it, and as disappointing as it is for Yvo to be cancelled like it's a big flag for like we need to address. This is if we're going to cancel this event because we need to look at ourselves internally and I think I. Mean Hope the hope is that they come out better on the other side. I mean it seems like this is one of those things where. I. Hesitate to say Covid kind of save them but. If. This were an actual in person things still at Mandalay Bay then they wouldn't be able to cancer that quickly an online tournament. Shuttered a lot more easily. The bigger question now is what happens next year.

How Long Does It Stay on Surfaces? How Long Can We Rely On Amazon Delivery?

"From the weekend. Our young ace symptomatic cases the key to spreading the virus. Should we rethink the conventional wisdom around facemasks? How long can the virus stay on surfaces? And how long can we rely on Amazon delivery? As of last night known cases of Corona virus in the United States exceeded thirty five hundred spread across forty nine states prompting the mass cancellation of and the reordering of American public life the CDC is recommending halting gatherings of fifty people or more throughout the US for the next eight weeks if implemented fully that means all sporting events all concerts all conferences. All parades all weddings. Almost everything done for eight weeks. Bars and restaurants are closed in New York City beginning tomorrow. Tuesday at nine. Am takeout and delivery orders? Only New York City schools have closed. Ohio has suggested schools might remain closed in that state for the remainder of the academic year but Ohio Massachusetts and Illinois have gone the France route as well. All bars and restaurants are shutting down statewide quote. Delay means more people will die Ohio governor. Mike DeWine said these states are the first states to take the steps toward Italy toward a complete shutdown of public activities except for food medicine and other essentials it is unlikely they will be the last the CEO of universal music group Lucian Grange. Perhaps the most powerful man in the music business has been hospitalized after testing positive for Cova nineteen apple CEO. Tim Cook and Apple Services. Chief Ed Eq- attended granges sixtieth birthday party. Two weeks ago in shocking news. But I guess we can't be shocked anymore by anything as it's all probably going to close down. But you can't stay and sit in the cafe or Patio Areas French luxury company. Lvmh said figuring it's cosmetics division to only produce mass quantities of Hydro Alcoholic Gel in order to give it to French health authorities. More people have now died from the corona virus outside of China than have died inside China since the disease. I emerged airline Cathay. Pacific is adding flights from US cities and London to Hong Kong because since the disease seems to be relatively under control in Hong Kong at the moment some people are seeing Hong Kong as a safe haven and are rushing to travel there a mere seven weeks ago. Hong Kong had implemented travel restrictions because of its proximity to mainland China. Italy reported three hundred sixty eight deaths in a single day yesterday. A twenty five percent increase making this the deadliest twenty four hour period thus far worse than the deadliest day in Wuhan's outbreak. Italy has reported two hundred deaths for each of the last three days. Italy only had its first. Colonel Related Death three weeks ago now. More than eighteen hundred people have died because of overloaded hospitals. The fatality rate and Lamberti is nine percent in the rest of Italy. The fatality rate is five point one percent Spanish health authorities reported two thousand New Corona virus cases in twenty four hours on Sunday bringing the total in the country of Spain to eight thousand cases with two hundred eighty eight deaths as the number of people who have died of the virus more than doubled in twenty four hours as the Spanish death. Toll was up from one hundred thirty six a day earlier. That is an increase of almost one hundred percent. Spain is clearly on. The Italian trajectory is France. Next it certainly seems to be going that way quoting the New York Times. France announced the closing of all non indispensable businesses including restaurants bars and movie theaters after a sharp uptick in corona virus cases. The number of French cases past five thousand four hundred twenty on Sunday with one hundred and twenty seven deaths on Saturday. Three hundred corona virus patients were in critical condition half of them under sixty years of age on Sunday. Francis Transportation Minister said the country would begin reducing plane train and bus services between cities and quote. I'd like to end the segment with some potentially good news from Italy Adrenal Aguzzi. A professor of neuro pathology and Switzerland just north of the troubled Italian region of Lombardy tweeted a chart this weekend that showed that even with the surge in deaths in Italy over the last few days the death rate is deviating ever so slightly from exponential growth. It's early days. But the lockdown might be beginning to work linked to the chart. I'm referencing in the show. Notes and Chen He wa. The European Bureau chief for China Daily tweeted this quote. Just read that Chinese medical team sent to Italy to fight Kovic nineteen comprises mostly experienced doctors from Sichuan Sichuan folks still remember how an Italian rescue team during the devastating. Two Thousand Eight Wenchuan earthquake saved many lives. The world needs more of US helping each other and quote. There has been a lot of justified. I think hand-wringing about the scenes of people going to bars and restaurants even to Disney world. This weekend seemingly unworried about anything that is going on. This is obviously a problem for one. Big reason potential transmission from people who might not know they already have the disease indeed. There is increasing evidence that it is young people people without symptoms that might be the key driver of the spread of Corona Virus. Even more so than we realized quoting. Cnn New Studies in several countries and a large corona virus outbreak in Massachusetts Bring into question reassuring assertions by US officials about the way the novel virus spreads it appears that a Massachusetts Corona virus cluster. With at least eighty two cases was started by people who are not yet showing symptoms and more than a half dozen studies have shown that people without symptoms are causing substantial amounts of infection several experts interviewed by CNN. Said while it's unclear. Exactly what percentage of the transmission in the outbreak is fueled by people who are obviously sick versus those who have no symptoms or very mild symptoms? It is becoming clear that transmission by people who are as symptomatic or mildly symptomatic is responsible for more transmission than previously thought and quote. Indeed scientists seem to be coming to the conclusion that this is what makes corona virus so insidious it can spread far before it even sickens both mergers and SARS tend to be only spread by symptomatic people. But if you get cova did you might have spread it to fifty other people before you even know it. Add to that what we've previously discussed about how scientists suspect that you're more contagious earlier. On in the disease in a study of twenty four passengers who had just flown from Israel seven tested positive for corona virus of which four had no symptoms and the viral load of specimens from a symptomatic patients was higher than from the three patients. Who had symptoms thus the global move toward social distancing? Stay home stay out of large crowds status small crowds. There's a link to chart in the show notes that shows the difference between two towns in Italy. The two are Bergamo and loyalty. Loyalty actually had the first cove in nineteen case reported before Bergamo reported. Its first but Loki. Shut down their town February. Twenty Third Burgum. Oh waited until almost a week later by March thirteenth lucky only had around a thousand cases of corona virus and those case numbers seem to be leveling out while Burgum oh has seen case numbers shoot up to two thousand five hundred and young people. I'm talking to you. Data from South Korea where they test everyone they can is suggesting that. Thirty percent of the carriers in that country where aged twenty to twenty nine. If that's not enough to convince you let me point you to an actual animation. It is literally just balls. Dancing around and environment randomly representing infections over time. Look at what happens to the infection curve when only a quarter of a population continues to circulate and three quarters of a population practice social distancing. The infection rate is significantly slowed and with extensive distancing with seven eighths of a population staying home. The infection curve is stopped almost in its tracks. These are powerful animations but they are only animations only simulations made to educate on a concept. The concept is however. This is joke. If you can stay home let me quote. The last paragraph from the story accompanying the simulation quote in one crucial respect. These simulations are nothing like reality. Unlike simulations cove nineteen can kill though. The fatality rate is not precisely known. It is clear that the elderly members of our community are most at risk from dying from covered. One thousand nine hundred quote if you want this to be more realistic. A scientist was quoted after seeing a preview of the story some of the DOTS should disappear and quote link to the simulation is of course in the show. Notes questions are being raised as to whether or not more of US should be wearing face masks. Even if we're not showing signs of corona virus infection authorities in China already mandate the wearing of masks in all public places whether or not people are sick or healthy quoting from ink stone since late January Chinese authorities and major cities have enforced rules on wearing face masks in public spaces including detaining. Those who tried to use public transport without a mask and quote in South Korea and Japan is also required. That mask be worn by healthy people in crowded places but in much of the rest of the world including here in the US. It's advised that only people displaying symptoms should wear masks as just mentioned the possibility that corona virus can be spread by a symptomatic. People is causing some to argue for more widespread use of masks quoting again from ink stone. A symptomatic transmission has been reported in multiple countries in which a spreader is responsible for sickening others without knowing it in January at cluster. Thirteen infections was believed to have started with a British man who contracted the virus during a trip to Singapore and spread it to others on a skiing trip in the French Alps and back home in the United Kingdom all the while showing no signs of infection himself quote researchers writing in the Lancet suggested that in light of this current national advice may need updating to deal specifically with Ron Virus quoting from the peace. If everyone puts on a mask in public spaces it would help to remove stigmatization that has hitherto discouraged masking of symptomatic patients in many places. Furthermore transmission from asymmetric infected individuals has been documented for Kobe. Nineteen and viral load is particularly high at early disease. Stage masking as a public health intervention would probably intercept the transmission link and prevent these apparently healthy infectious sources and quote. All of that said as of right now. The advice remains to only wear a mask if you are displaying symptoms helping to conserve the mask as a resource masks are in short supply and are needed for medical practitioners. Who them more than the rest of us. In order to safely treat people not get sick themselves and thus stay on the job. A new study has revealed the length of time that Kobe nineteen can remain viable on common surfaces. The study so new that it is yet to be. Peer reviewed found that Corona virus was most stable on plastic and stainless steel with viable virus being detected up to seventy two hours on those surfaces after application it can also remain viable for up to twenty four hours on cardboard and up to four hours on copper. The researchers noted that these decay timings were similar to those found with the two thousand and two two thousand. Three SARS virus suggesting that quote differences in the epidemiology of these viruses likely arise from other factors including high viral loads in the upper respiratory tract and the potential for individuals infected with cove nineteen to shed and transmit the virus while a symptom matic and quote. There are presently two hundred and seventy four surface disinfectants approved by the EPA for use against Kovic Nineteen Link to the list is in the show notes at this point with store shelves increasingly bear. I'm sure a lot of us are continuing to rely on delivery especially Amazon prime delivery to keep ourselves stocked up with everything we need so that we can shelter in place. Avoid going out to stores as much as possible and just generally socially distance well an article and vices motherboard talking about the broader strains to workers in the sorting facilities and also the people who have to deliver our stuff makes the point that maybe our delivery systems are endangered as well quote. Motherboards spoke to Amazon Logistics Labor experts. Who say it's only a matter of time? Before Amazon's prime signature two day delivery promise serious delays mistakes and widespread shortages due to increased demands from consumers also pressure on workers to meet rising production quotas restrictions on trade and the possibility of fulfillment centers being. Shut DOWN AS CORONA VIRUS SPREADS. Amazon's warehouse workers. Say they're already seeing increased workloads while fewer of their colleagues are showing up to work. According Labor organizers already Amazon's white collar workers have been asked to work from home. But that's obviously not an option for warehouse fulfillment workers and delivery drivers quote. It seems really likely that. Amazon's prime delivery system will falter Daniel flaming president of Economic Roundtable and an author of the two thousand nineteen report on Amazon's economic impact on southern California told motherboard. One day deliveries may not be made within one day if the workers who do show up to warehouses are more stress given bigger routes and are possibly less experienced incorrect deliveries will be made. The last mile segment of the delivery is very labor intensive and quote flaming ads. That were likely to see a close parallel of what happens in Amazon warehouses. During the holiday rush increase delays mistakes and bottlenecks. It would seem to me. Most likely that we'll see a drop in reliability and timeliness and quote but more than that the fear here is the same with the health system basically if too many people involved in the Amazon delivery chain are even temporarily sidelined by the disease at the same time. It's possible that even Amazon delivery could go down to say nothing of the potential disruption to the supply chain I e if even Amazon can't source enough goods to

Terminology and Science Museums

"So we can have a dialogue again. This is exciting. I love talking about museums with my museum friends and I hope you guys like it too but first first of all I wanted to. I neglected to mention something in my last episode with regards to conservators and this is very important for trivia purposes. One of the best solvents for gently cleaning the surface of paintings is human saliva and that sounds gross in weird but in fact any conservative that you talk it was like Oh yeah absolutely spit on that well not spit on it. I actually I got a chance to do that at work. The other you've got to spit on I got to spend on some painting raining so We were cleaning some Oil on board me and my coworker Carol. Hi Carol she doesn't listen to this podcast and She gave me a bunch of thin sticks and a bunch of loose cotton and she taught me to grab a piece of cotton and roll it up and stick it in my cheek and let it sit there and then pull it out. Roll it around the stick and then gently like buff. The surface of the vichy was hazing. You she he did the same thing. We're both both like cotton or cheeks like like the Godfather and cleaning the surface of paintings and it is this is an excellent solvent because it has a gentle and like I'm enzyme that breaks down the surface of dirt but doesn't harm The the image the image or the varnish. That's the word I'm looking for and this is why people don't want you to get up close and personal with the paintings museums because it's covered and spit. They're covered in human spirit. You guys just thinking they don't want you to spend on at least don't spit on them because it will break it down eventually eventually. Also zoos museums yes. One hundred percent hundred percent user museums. They have a collection process. They collect animals and they have a loan process. They loan animals to other museums for certain amount of time. There's paperwork involved. They have the accession process. It's more gruesome than a normal museum process shirts. They D- Accession. There's paperwork involved when an animal shuffles off this mortal coil. So I wanted to give a shout out to you my cousin the zoo not my my work cousin the chiefs that your cousin is zoo. Steve's yes yeah Steve's brothers the Internet my cousin Xue facts okay we we. We have a friend in listener yes Jane Liz Zookeeper Oh keeper. Yes Hello James. Hello James and we decided we're just going to go to the zoo with a microphone and having talked to us. I think it's a good idea and I think I think he would be down for it. He's been like really. I mean I feel terrible because we have been in touch with him and we just have not gotten a chance to like hook up and actually do an episode. But he's a great guy he he has very interesting work. He's funny interesting and we're definitely going to do an episode soon. And that's I think we definitely should go to the zoo do like real. NPR Shit Man Mandalay Bay. She goes to the zoo. I love that okay. That's it misinformation goes to the zoo. Get Ready James. We're coming for you all right museum terminology. Time time okay. All of these terms are for my award. Winning powerpoint presentation entitled Life Is Short and then you die physical deterioration and how to prevent it. It is not award-winning. It's just one of my powerpoint from class but okay I term inherent vice. which was my team? Name for Trivia and Grad School and. Yes we want a lot Inherent Vice is the tendency and physical objects to deteriorate because of the fundamental instability of the components of which they are made as opposed to deterioration caused us by external forces. What does that mean it? Basically means that the makeup of the object is slowly destroying it from the inside. And there's nothing you can do about it. A good example of this as newspapers the process by which the paper is made is very acidic which causes the paper to yellow and crumble eventually which is not reversible by any conservation mean all objects have some kind of inherent vice as a result of the baseline law of entropy of course but we're not going to get really philosophical about this because that's just looking into an abyss is that we just don't have time for today. My students in my injured archives course get a whole week of me just telling them how terrible everything the thing is. Light is bad. Water is bad. Air As bad heat is bad touching things as bad like just. Don't yeah just don't that's the that's basically. Yeah this is your stuff is going to die. Yup Life is short and then you die. That's why I called that. My students laugh but it's true. The next term is foxing. Your must be familiar. smiliar with this. It is an age related process of deterioration that causes spots and Browning on old paper documents. The name may derive from the Fox like Reddish Brown color of the stains or the arrest. Chemical Ferric Oxide which may be involved paper so affected is said to be Fox. I see this a lot with like bookbinding Oh yeah absolutely foxing also occurs biological study skins or specimens as an effective chemical reactions or mold on Melanin. The causes of foxing aren't super stood. It might be mold or the oxidation of metals. Like iron or copper in the pulp or rag from which the paper is made but no one is entirely sure it is reversible but it is kind even intensive process so a lot of times if the paper is already unstable foxing. Isn't that big of a deal and so a lot of conservatives we'll just leave it mhm unless it's like super bad and you can't actually read the paper yeah The next word is crippling Crippling the distinctive network of fine cracks in glass which is visible to the naked eye It's one of the symptoms of Glass Disease Aka sick class or glass s. l. nece nicer bones. Yup Bird bones. Glass disease is caused by an inherent instability the chemical composition of the original glass formula It is irreversible double but able to be slowed down by tight climate control which we will talk about in a moment and and Lauren did a really great episode heart glass. Yes I did an episode episode twenty one year. So we're back there in the catalog early enough first year and also if you like glass may I plug the series blown away on Netflix. which there's like competition show about glassblowing very fascinating so yeah glasses? Amazing like if you're a local New York state. I highly recommend the Corning Museum of glass which talks about the science the history the art and like another thing of glass. It's just all about glass and it's a big beautiful museum that got a great a gift shop off their gift shops fantastic and they do hot glass shows where they actually like make glass in front of you and talking about the process and it's really cool So highly recommend and go to the Corning Museum of Glass. The next term is called cobbling cobbling is a plea distortion of paper parchment or textile. It appears as has wrinkles puckers or ripples often in parallel ridges without creases liked buckling but appears in waves. So cobbling just kind of looks looks like like a rumpled sheet basically like on your bed also just as an FYI words like weeping oozing desiccation or drying out offc gassing the evaporation potentially dangerous chemicals into the air or fry -able which is easily broken apart or flaking tends to be words used in other fields as well but all have to do with pound object is damaged or breaking down the just going back The like this cock owing paper happens because Paper if it absorbs water and then when the water out so this is why you don't want your humidity and your temperature. Allocate Awhile Talk Yeah. That's that's a big thing that'll happen that you can like clearly visible that Yudo. Something's wrong paper starts doing yeah. It's a very obvious symptom Kim of that also a couple of words that are not necessarily damage But definitely our weaknesses in the object. So so this term correct floor. Crack Laura's a fine pattern of dense cracking formed on the surface of materials usually oil paintings. It can be a result of drying aging aging intentional patterning or a combination of all three and the term is most often used to refer to temper Oil paintings but it can also develop old ivory carvings painted miniatures on ivory backing. Recently analysis. Chrysler has been proposed as a way to authenticate art basically. It's just the way that paint is layered in the process of actually painting getting the piece of artwork sometimes certain layers Dry faster than others or there is an off gassing process during the drying process and it damages the surface level and so it actually shrinks or expands spending and causes these fine cracks Which is interesting Crack floor in Pottery is called crazing in that at similar in that it's fine. Cracks appear on the surface of the material most often the glaze layer of pottery ceramics and beautiful it is beautiful and especially like both cracker crazing. One could argue is desirable desirable in certain cases. Like when you see Chrysler and a painting you know it's old it's an antique Lens Air of like authenticity to it. crazing and pottery is seen as like a textural benefits and it does make the peace weaker to a certain extent. You're not supposed to like DOC put. You're not supposed to wash or soak pieces of pottery. That have crazing on them. Because that means that there's a weakness in the water can get into the poorest part of the pottery but it is very beautiful in some potters and artists. Like make sure that it is purposeful like they purposely fire. Fire it so that there is some crazy

"At the Mandalay bay at the craps table that's it and in that interview I mean he almost ripped the microphone off early on we'll see how we gave you guys the twelve thirty almost rips the microphone off early on because I kept asking him questions about nineteen eighty nine I'll pick you realize they wish I was back story and that's what we are that's what we did with the show but you know he calmed down and and quite frankly he made one of the most impassioned emotional argument I've ever hear ever heard him make on his behalf of why he should be reinstated after thirty years it's it's very riveting compelling television and I hope people tune in to what was happening that he almost ripped the microphone all I kept asking Dan about nineteen eighty nine he said you know that's old news why do you want to ask you about what you sure as opposed to the past yeah we do the title of the show was backstory knew what I wanted to ask about but he got quite angry and and almost all was he wearing a jumpsuit I'm just curious like how much of what surrounds Pete rose feels a little bit Vegas greasy all quite a bit I you know here his explanation are you know he was supposed to reconfigure life when he signed that agreement with parts you madi in nineteen eighty nine the only way you would ever get back into baseball fifty reconfigured his life of course as we all know he lied for fifteen years that he had never bet on baseball or on the red did did admit that until two thousand four but when I asked about reconfigure your life he believes he's reconfigured because he doesn't gambled illegally on sports anymore he only bet legally in the Vegas sports book on baseball by the way almost every day and and for that reason he feels that but not in reconfiguring his life and he should be reinstated and brought back to the base of it it's sad it's tragic that he can't give up betting on baseball to secure his legacy in the hall of fame he wants it so badly talk about being kicked out of the game or something out of his heart and and and really gets quite emotional in discussing it of how much being a hall of fame getting into all thing be forgiven by baseball means they have done do you one of the great investigative reporters working in sports allow yourself an opinion on whether she was Joe and Pete rose should be pardoned and allowed in the hall of fame but I I do Gregg I mean after spending after spending months on that I really do feel that thirty years is is that enough time with with for Pete rose I mean you know there are people who have who have had murder vented fitted that have not gone as long as that and you know Vincent put it very well in our show with an interview of course very been but with the deputy commissioner when people rose was knocked out of baseball for goodbye party Ahmadi he said because of the changing views of gambling in this country ultimately it's probably inevitable the P. rose will get in the hall of fame it may be after he dies and he may not see it and I asked him about that as well but I do think that Pete rose has served enough of a time and certainly shoeless Joe he died in nineteen fifty one it's been almost seven years that she was killed but on the outside looking in I mean for the purposes baseball been eligible list should stop when you die and and actually we have some fresh reporting on that subject as well and they'll be has changed their view of that and we're gonna break a little news with the show on that topic as well I I wish that we had praise Stuart Scott more while he was still living so you can hear it ESPN's backstory is on Sunday three PM eastern on ESPN is gonna rear Sunday at nine on ESPN you can watch any time on the ESPN app you have been in the home of Jerry we ever find out where McCarthy flesh what is our guest house that's why I'm asking you is there a guest house like one of my choices is there a maid's quarters like where would he have slept sleeping bag rented car yeah yeah there is a guest house actually in the backyard where Jerry Jones his mother left interestingly until she passed away just a few years before I did that profile of them back in twenty fourteen so yeah through the get out then presumably that's where rob McCarty font that night what do you imagine that he slept in what Mr McCarthy baby Barbie jobless for Jerry I don't know what it is tidy why he's the correct answer is tighty Whitey thank you for being on with us be gone don van Natta ESPN the backstory banned for life about Pete rose shoeless Joe Jackson and gambling "Minutes after the hour we're back at the Mandalay bay to the merger with US I'll travel continues from the signature travel network global summit we're talking to the frontline folks the guys who were really the the the first line of offense or defense in the in the transaction of travel and what they're seeing not only just in this year but in the next year to come joining me now the principal culture traveler in I have to say Detroit Michigan curry George how are you Sir I'm well thank you how are you well first of all of your choice coming back absolutely I mean talk about a resurgence in a renaissance in and they should be celebrated yes indeed it's amazing to see what's going on at home and the trick becoming a destination honestly more people wanting to visit hotels opening shops opening Detroit is always no longer just the rents and right no absolutely not there's always been great music and entertainment and to try to force Detroit and sports but now the world is really watching it and visiting as well which is exciting this could be the Tigers here again you know they they know they they had great pitching but they didn't quite do it last year but he they believe there we hope yeah we hope but now it's about getting out of the door to what trends are you seeing right now as we enter two thousand twenty exotic travel which is fantastic and really find that for me though I define it as not the usual suspects so there's always strong travel to Europe South America is no longer you know a new trend people are going to South wonder we're talking we're wonder we're talking Uganda we're talking Australia Western Australia yeah we know Western Australia is to me is the great undiscovered especially the the the northwestern part to Kimberly's that's MA and you do it by cruise ship he a number of one of the silver she goes up but you could also in Rwanda unbelievable and guess who flies to Rwanda cutter yeah which means if you look at the map you can just use Rwanda as part of a multi destination pieces all you don't mind changing planes and don't want to tell you want to instantly and then you know Kenya you know the name for their with some great safari experience so you do your gorilla tracking a chance and then you do a traditional so far as well and it's all right there what destination is surprising you though as as people are asking for it now Egypt's and it's not a surprise because it's a fascinating incredible destination and by the way this year is a great year to go on talking about twenty twenty because that's when they're open in the grander yeah she's yeah I've been there I've been inside the workshops we did a television peace over there with their with their amazing restorers and researchers and what's great about this museum is they have twenty in seventeen and twenty separate workshops in laboratories where they're getting in new finds every day amazing but the best part is you can actually book a tour and go in those rooms with the restores and be up front and close with you know king tut's necklace three feet away from me yeah yeah amazing it's incredible and I I was there just last year with the group which was unbelievable just exceeded expectations and I'm looking forward to going back and for the museum but also to explore more the country I mean it's you know the permits are iconic the Nile cruise visiting those sites but there's the Red Sea they're all sorts of other destinations and lesser known pyramid sites in Egypt to the right and and the British foreign office finally removed the warning for Sharm el Sheik and flights are coming back yeah it's a great to stopping out port especially it would be a diver but it doesn't hurt I mean the red sea over there is just amazing yeah credible on my list on your list all right what about Jordan Jordan is a beautiful was there last year has well with the group and seeing increased demand for Jordan as well Jordan is always been known as the the safe destination in the Middle East and incredible food incredible shopping incredible sights obviously there to see and central location so you can combine all these destinations which really just maximizes the value in the experience for the traveler are you are you basically trying to convince your clients that they should get away from one dimensional destinations and and book and some stuff and and and do two or three steps and not making it like if it's Tuesday it must be Belgium but at least as long as you're in the region look at look at hub and spoke absolutely maximizing time maximizing value so really stretching their dollar stretching their experience overall and by the way if you ever want to figure out if US dollar was strong this is the year to do it what you're going to Argentina what you're going to South Africa with you're going to even the heroes to pressed against the dollar British pound just pressed against the dollar the tie box I mean even the thought they'd get a just little small strong no itch you're in the in the driver seat and you're making an impact when you visit these destinations that was you know speaking with a client just the other day and saying you know when you when you go to Egypt Rwanda Jordan these places and you buy things from local vendors and you visit community workshops whether it's the Maasai in Kenya or it's an artist and on the street in Cairo you're making a difference you are helping the family you're supporting the small business in a way that is an insignificant in Paris or London but it's really tremendously impactful and in other parts of the world cream you can always or you should always connect the dots and follow the money and if you do you'll be a happy traveler you will make a difference I got it Kareem George the principle of culture traveler in the new global capital city of.

"And it was, you could see Mandalay bay that thirty second floor because at that time, they knew, you know, a little bit of what had happened and you just all the window, shattered, and the curtains blowing out, and it was just the cold refilling, and we couldn't leave quick enough. I mean you saw people camped out on the casino floors with sheets and towels and just cuddling and crying. And I, I don't wish it on. My were semi. We couldn't get in the car quick enough. And until we were on the freeway driving. Home was the first time I got like a breath of. I'm okay my gosh and reach out to my girlfriend who had worked for my doctor's office, and she told my doctor what happened. And she said, tell her to get here immediately. We'll do ultrasound will confirm. Everything's okay. So we got into town in the old sound and the minute we, you know solve the. Heartbeat. We bald is out and the staff cried with us. And we just had such good support team. And you know, it was still the way what happened did this really happen? Who, who could do this? Why did it happen? And just trying to seek those answers then, of course, they're not answered today in, in the beginning, we were just making ourselves sick because we were trying to find those answers that weren't there and I remember after the doctor's appointment and finally eating the first thing, one of the stories, I read was the husband that died. Protecting his wife hovering over his wife, and I just thought that, that could have been my husband, you know, coming to find out that there were fifty eight lives that were taken and so many other life's that were impacted in, you know, so many others that were injured and then the long term effect, like you know we all have PTSD in some form now. And you know. We, we still have nightmares shooting nightmares all the time. And I have I've always been a public person, and concerts were always my and my husband's things since, you know, we got together, and two thousand eleven and, you know, every year we're going to handful of concerts than we haven't been to a concert sense, and we don't like big crowds, and totaling Ziobro now and balloons popping, never ever would imagine. That would be a trigger, you know, and it's just the things that you wouldn't be noticed for anyone else. And sitting in restaurants. You gotta find a door, you know, someone walks in and they may look suspicious like we're on like Haya. Joe all the time. It's crazy. I was, I was telling you to my dad's high school, best friend, he was there and he was actually shot. And one of the bullets went through his chest and out the back into his arm. And he was with a friend, who they crawls under the stage and they were able to get from behind out under this fence, and there was people leaving a truck, and somehow he was able to get into the truck, and they took him straight to the hospital, and he lived very fortunately, but it's so hard because I'm getting emotional. But like you said, there's no answers to the. No. And like my heart has always gone out to like the school shootings. Are you hear all these shootings on this world?.

"Press has given to the win and Mandalay bay hotel. Let's go. You've been asking for Michael Shapiro again. Great. He was on over a year ago and people just love the talking about fantastic show. I mean, it's a show. It's a lifestyle reckless in Vegas and livestock because we're actually looking into a reality show that they're already starting to film. Michael first of all great to see you again, it's been a little while the shows so popular as ever, but this reality show thing. Where'd you get the idea? And what are we looking at? I know it's in the shopping phase. But I I know you're pretty excited about it. First of all really great to be here in good to see again. You know, it's kind of a secret we're not leading to much of it out at this point. But I just there's a show that I loved for fifteen years. I've been watching live at Daryl's house, which is filmed out of New York and Daryl hall from hall notes, of course. And I just love the camaraderie and friendship that happens on the show, and then they play music, and of course, my whole life is built around music so room, my wife, and I bought a house little over year ago, and it's old Vegas was built in nineteen sixty eight and so it's got that old Vegas feel. I mean, you feel like Sinatra is going to be walking in your front door at any minute. And so in the studio, we set it up to be able to to film, we wanted to bring friends over to the house local entertainers and also international celebrities that come through Las Vegas, and as you know, with all the residencies here there, it's pretty rich. Right. So we invite him over to the house, and we have a nice meal will bring a celebrity chef and. Break bread with them and talk about life, and love and music, and spirituality, whatever comes up very candid. And then we go in our student, we perform one of the reckless, you know, reckless in Vegas has we have. Thirty two arrangements in their old Vegas songs that are made modern and contemporary L original arrangements, and we'll have the guest actually be the singer. And we'll play one of our arrangements and have them say very little I kind of like a little bit of Jimmy Fallon and the Mets play in a along. But not much more relaxed and kind of honest setting that's putting against the tonight show. But it is a very cool thing, you know. And that's what the reckless in Vegas is just such a fantastic and people love that concept where you take the old Vegas stuff. But you put your own your own Mark on me. You have a lot. Like, if you go to the website one thing, you'll notice there's a lot of comments from people that have reviewed the show and everybody kinda says the same thing. Wow. That was way more than we expected. Always get that after a show. I don't know what they're I don't know if it's me that they have low expectations for but after the show like, wow, we did not expect that borderline insult. Listen, if somebody comes up to me and says why you you're playing unbelievable in my in my heart and in my head. I'm thinking what about my voice? And if they come up and say, why your voice fantastic that I think about my guitar playing. So, you know, I don't know what it is. I think it's some kind of insecurity or something. Tell folks kind of some of the things. You do. Sinatra. Okay. But give me an example, something you'll do with the Sinatra song. Well, so okay. This is a great arrangement. We do for a very good year, which isn't phenomenal. And Frank was chairman of the board the king of telling stories in his songs, and in the way, he delivered the message. What was important to us is that we did not mess up. The original versions we wanted to put our own originally originality into it because I'm an original artist. You know, put a lot of original music out. And I didn't want to cover it. I wanted to remake the pay on March to it. So we took Jefferson airplane's white rabbit, and we put it is the music bed for Frank Sinatra's, a very good year, and it just works. We take got Kelly homes to sings enforce itchy times. One morning. I woke up, and I heard led zeppelin's a whole lot of love. And I always wanted to new boots are made for walking by Nancy Sinatra. And I heard the two perfectly my studio wind him up and they were perfectly so. Survey for walking over the top of led zeppelin's whole lot of love, which you know, kinda unusual. But we're. No. People like myself that loves music and like both both areas. I liked the Led Zeppelin that like the Nancy Sinatra to be able to match that up is incredible. It's a lot of fun. And when I first started doing this. We put an album out back in two thousand thirteen we spend a year on it. We really thought that it would be a younger generation, you know, Tony's and thirties that would be introduced to this great music. We would sorta if you will trickle into liking great music because music is so different to that. It's coming out, and when we got out to Vegas. We were surprised to see the demographic is actually fifty to eighty and I think it's I call lightning in a bottle. But what it is for the people that grew up listening to these original songs, they're they're they're in their seventies and even eighties rock and roll. Which is kind of what we do with. These songs is so useful for energy. So because we kept the lyrics and the melodies true to the original versions, but the music. Rock and roll it's nostalgic forum because they hear the the original sound, but then this rock and roll thing. Mix them few young and useful. So. Yeah. I could see that work. Because even if they were listening to to Franken dean and all that back then. Okay. They've lived a lot of life since then they've heard a lot of this rock thing. And what kind of a cool thing to see that great music still live in kind of another form. And then the fifty year olds and six year olds. Of course, they grew up on rock and roll. But the parents were listening to Sinatra need, right. So let's double whammy on that that down. So it's been really great more with superstar musician Michael Shapiro of reckless in Vegas in just a few moments time now for another visual with any,.

I did that that granted businesses not booming right now in Vegas for these Michael Jackson shows, and that's why I went because I got great tickets. I mean super affordable front row was fantastic. We're most people see in moral. Sundram got CS. What that on the Polk where pope where people see a moral conundrum guts only bargain. I was it. It was fantastic. I gotta be honest. He's got amazing songs. I mean, the dancing was was pretty cool. He added Qatar is that looked exactly like Howard Stern. And then afterwards I had listened. There was McDonald's just down the Qatar. Here's this show the stratosphere like exactly like I would start. It was weird hanging around the stratosphere. Well, I listen the one they have to shows tickets were cheap baby. Nobody was going to the Michael Jackson. They you to go wasn't one at Mandalay bay, which is very expensive. Yes. Monday night. When I had to take it down to the stratosphere. And what a rip off of that is because you gotta ticket. He had a little dinner. And then they take you up to this. You know? To the top floor. You just check out biggest. So it's like did you just go to a Michael Jackson impersonator show at the stratosphere? Whoa. You face. Howard Stern impersonator too. Do you guys want there to be local Vegas news interviewing stugatz outside the Michael Jackson show asking about whether? Cody style. He's just you know, going off about how great the show was. There is the stratosphere is it on the strip or is it off the street. I think it's slightly off extra. Did you take your daughters? I did take my daughters. Hold on hold on. Let's just backtrack for a second. Here. See if we can figure some of this out, my give me more information on the stratosphere, how long has it been there? And really, I just I'm trying to measure. It said quotient that area's known that whole circus circus area. Like, you say where you're staying, and you say that area people do look at you with some level of judgment. I just likes to God's trying to get in. The what is Michael? Oh, that's the oh the Excalibur that is so depressing. That's I literally stayed there once and we were walking down the halls. And I was like this is where you come to kill your the terrible thing to Thank think you. about. Like a rich compared to the strategy. At least the Excalibur is on the strip stratosphere is so far off the strip. What's speaking to see an impersonator over even a Cirque show? I just love the idea of guys like spreading his arms. Like why is there? Nobody here. Like, why do I have the place to myself over the myself? I'm like why is it so close to me go to that table over there in time though, dregs, and then there was a McDonald's, right? When I walked out and French fries and a chocolate shake wolf was that good best part of the show at lebatardshow on Twitter and Instagram if you want to vote on the polls, you keep pivoting to the French fries, you keep wanting to move away from the what did you? Choice that you make it wasn't a great choice. I I actually in a rare moment of awareness, actually, said something to the people. I was with this is probably a bit of time to go to a Michael Jackson. Going to the stratosphere. You're literally going out of your way in support on Michael Jackson show yet. Not that I'm aware of what do you think is the best way to help reduce gun violence in this country. I think that HR eight is absolutely the right first step to closing this gaping loophole and background checks. I think once HR aid is passed. There's a number of steps that this congress can take to adequately address and reduce violence in America. We know for sure that states that have comprehensive regulation of guns have far lower rates have gone violence than states that have very lax gun regulations. And we can look at a wide range today. We've been talking about regulation through extremists protective orders we've been talking about age limits on guns. We're talking about very dangerous lethal weapons we're talking about proper funding of research and CDC, and I can go on my testimony includes a wide range of possible angles that this congress can consider as a way to reduce violence in this country almost all of. Which have research showing that president of impact. And you're familiar with every town for gun safety grew out of the shootings up east. They they made this their top priority. I like maroon five I didn't like the halftime show at all what? Maroon five what? They were a little too cheesy to be the halftime show. I don't I like when the halftime show has more than like one collaboration. Like, you get surprises and stuff. I was very confused by Travis Scott was there with maroon five and big boy came out doing that outcasts on it was very put together don't was representing the AT L. That's what like, okay. So that's exciting. And then he did like one of their lamest song. He didn't do any of their like ACL kind of songs. You know what I mean? And. Guy that song that he does with Drake it's called sicko mode. It's a good song. But he's like a rapper that talks out his raps. So when he was on stage. She was like screaming, don't you think? "And what he meant to us all as a player 'cause you can't do that. But the thing moving to seven miles away from Mandalay bay while he's appealing his case was a brilliant thing. That's why not I'm not now. Deserve it. I don't think it was brilliant. But I do think that when you've never worked the non to five and the only requisite skill that you've had available to you is playing the sport of baseball, which you love daily. Then chances are you're gonna try to use something that's societas with to to to maximize your marketing pretend you're gonna try to get money off the game as best as you possibly can Pete Rose as bad as it is for him to be associated with that stuff in any kind of way whatsoever. It is clearly how he's going about the business of making his money. Now, finally Barry Bonds, I think I think you know, this. MGM Faces Boycott After Filing Lawsuit Against Shooting Victims

"Hour Last Friday MGM resorts sued the victims, of the shooting at its Mandalay bay hotel in Las Vegas in October using an anti-terrorism law that could wipe. Out its liability for what was the worst mass shooting in US history it, didn't take. Long for the hashtag boycott MGM resorts to appear, on Twitter Catherine Lombardo a. Lawyer for some of the shooting. Victim says the lawsuit is a trick this. Was not a terrorist attack this was negligence on on behalf of, MGM they're, trying to hide behind the safety AC one of the victims Jason McMillan a sheriff's deputy who was shot. And can no longer walk says MGM is trying to avoid. Its responsibility it enrages me to think that this This company can just try to. Skip out on their responsibilities in there Liability for what happened is To blame the victims to say that it's it's anyone else's all. Other than their own is it's absurd Thomas. Russell a professor at the Sturm college of law at the university of Denver tell us about the law. MGM is basing its lawsuit on, it's called, the support anti-terrorism by fostering technologies act or the. Safety act so this act is an act you know put in place by congress about fifteen years ago it bears sort of element of anti-terrorism and also. Elements of tort reform and kind of combines both of those together and makes it more. Difficult to sue someone who has hired somebody who's deployed technology that is supposed to be an anti-terrorism technology and so the claim by MGM is that they should be able, to shift liability from themselves or more likely from their insurers to the insurance company for contemporary services corporation. Which did The security work on the. Ground below the Mandalay bay hotel so this, is the first time that this law is being used so there's no. Precedent to follow but there do seem to be some hurdles one being, that perhaps the security company. Was protected under the law but MGM hasn't gone through the process that the firm did to get certification. Under the act well my reading, again as, you say it's correct that there hasn't been adjudication. Under the statute so in fact we don't really know what it means and it will take some some time before we figure that out my reading of. The statute and the related regulations are that the company creates a technology which can include. Maybe a service to that is designed to prevent some form of mass attack and then when another entity hires that company the liability should something go wrong shifts to the, to the Entity providing the technology the anti-terrorism technology? So there are a set of steps of approval through the department. Of homeland security that the security, company would have gone through it's a little, less clear to me exactly what MGM would have gone through an, important thing to note here is a lot of loss of course from injuries death from emotional. Harm, everything else one, of the things, that the statue does is narrows the amount of money. That can be, recovered for a variety of things the act eliminates punitive damages for example it narrows the recovery of economic harm for emotional loss it eliminates something related to health insurance essentially as what it does and at the same time the act limits the recovery to the total amount of insurance that. The security contractor has they're asking for the, court to declare the company isn't liable at all is there Is there, any problem with the victim's claims that MGM was negligent and, they were red flags about the shooter that the, hotel should have, picked up on. Such as piling up weapons in his room where the hotel hired the security company for the concert itself well I agree with. You there and I need to see more of the pleadings and some of. The lawsuits that were filed and then subsequently withdrawn but to, simplify I, can conceive, of an activity on, the ground. And there may have been negligence in relationship to that into the music festival and then separately negligence in the hotel and I'm. Not saying it was negligent, but perhaps, negligence in the hotel in allowing the number of bags. To come in and that sort of stuff although frankly I'm not. Sure I want hotels counting, my baggage so it may be that if this act protects MGM it could be that. It protects them only on the ground but not for what they are. Hotel right MGM does own both the festival and the hotel that they own them separately through a complicated corporate structure that I don't fully comprehend okay so many critics are calling out this lawsuit as outrages disgraceful and worse did it? Shock, you that MGM would use this legal maneuver so to speak no I'm not shocked and honestly I mean it may be a little premature to, seek a declaratory. Judgment on the other hand have got twenty five, hundred people who either filed suit and then withdrew editor said they're gonna sue, them it makes sense to consolidate these. Somewhere and I think that what is, likely as that this is all going to be consolidated within one federal courthouse somewhere in the United States and. And who, knows where that will be it may feel shocking. It's a little bit novel but it it shouldn't be, shocking that an entity that faces a lot of liability wants, to limit that liability and push that line Ability to others if they can do so an MGM spokeswoman said the federal court is an appropriate venue in the. Best and fastest way to resolve the cases will you explain why MGM and most corporations want cases to be tried in federal court. And. Plaintiffs and most victims would rather have it in state, court well I. Think the simple truth of the matter is and I should add to that? I'm, a law professor. But also, practice law, on the side of plaintiff's so that's generally where my sympathies lie but in this, case I'm trying to give it to you straight as I can the truth of the matter is the. Federal judges in our country are the. Best are the best judges that we have and the federal courts are the most efficient and effective courts that we have and it's going to help a party to be able to. Consolidate in one as. I said in one corridor, instead of courts rather than to have to litigated a number of different states between a number of different judges in front of home More. Who are who are elected, or appointed in a variety of different ways so the best judges you can get her in. The United States district court thanks for being on Bloomberg law that's Thomas Russell a professor at the Sturm college of law at the university of Denver coming? Up, on Bloomberg law the states of New York New jersey Connecticut and Maryland are suing. The Trump administration over its tax cut law which limits the amount of. State and local taxes residents can deduct. From their federal tax, returns is the lawsuit a long shot and later it looks. Like the Trump administration will have a lot of cases on the supreme court's docket next term including cases dealing with immigration, law and agency power with others in the wings I'm June Grasso it's twenty, five minutes past the hour this is Bloomberg in Kim Okoye is.
