California GOP won't remove unofficial ballot drop boxes

"Hi. Welcome to the side of the breakdown. Okay. Great to be here. So okay. You have been covering this dispute that is happening between the Republican Party and Democratic leaders in the state. Ballot boxes popped up in some contested congressional district over the weekend. Put there by the state GOP. Tell us what happened. What are they? Why is everybody so mad? Right. So this started to kind of last weekend when we started seeing photos of these boxes, unofficial ballot drop boxes pop up in Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange County, the state, GOP and county Republican Party's kind of took responsibility for them. Alex Media, California Secretary of State Javier Becerra, the state's attorney general, filed this season Desist letter against Republican Party. They've basically raised two points against these ballot boxes, one That some of them were labeled official even though they were definitely not official on to that. This is a violation of the state's ballot collection law, also known as ballot harvesting law. That makes it sound like you're stuffing turf builder in your envelope for something, so I think On the first point, the GOP has conceded, they said, You know, we promised these signs saying official are gone. The second point about Malik Collection is a bit more complicated. We're recording this on Thursday. This could likely end up in litigation, so we should say, As you pointed out, there is a law that allows ballot harvesting valid collection and the Democrats were all for it. The Republicans in the Legislature didn't vote for it. They howled against it. They said it cost them the election in some of the midterm races and 2018. So are they now? Just saying OK, can't beat him. We're going to join him. Yeah, This is as they've built their attempt at Valley Collection. It remains to be seen kind of what's the greater effective this strategically? I mean, you know the resource is that they're going to have to use to defend this, possibly in court could have possibly been used just to direct their voters towards existing ballad drop boxes. There are tons of official ballad drop boxes up and down the state. You can Google Katie with the early voting to find list and find a way to find ones near you. So it's not clear whether they're getting new votes that otherwise would have been captured in the existing collection and voting methods throughout the state. Is this really a wise use of resource is on the part of the GOP. I mean, Yeah, I talkto Paul Mitchell today who does for both parties is like a voter data grew and he said by his count, there's like 98 turned in and Fresno and he's like, I would bet every one of us was probably someone who already would've voted GOP. So What is this isn't a political stunt to draw attention to about harvesting. It is, isn't it from their perspective? Good faith effort on the GOP side to really make sure that people vote I mean, because it's uh it's a little confusing. I mean, there's about harvesting issue, and then there's everything we've been hearing from the president, which is Go to the polls. Don't vote early male voter, you know, male voting is problematic. None of that's true. It's fine. It's secure. But like, Like, what do you What's the political angle here? If there is one Right. I mean, I think you hit it on the head with this kind of strange dichotomy. I think as faras this strategy to me, it's kind of the halfway between a ballot harvesting, troll and kind of a legitimate operation that they were trying to get out the vote with, But it raises this question of Look both by mail the expansion of vote by mail in California this year. Sending every voter ballot was a bipartisan effort There was, you know, Half a dozen Republicans in the Assembly who supported this. Even legislators, who are upset that this initially was pursued through an executive order ultimately supported the legislation. Now take that in comparison to national Republicans, who have spent most of the year saying vote by mail is filled with fraud. It's kind of created this strange paradigm for the GOP, where on one hand they have to be like, Look as our president is saying. Vote by males fraudulent, But hey, while you're in the office, stick your ballot in here. We'll take it for you. And I think that sets up this strange reflex of having the defendant National Republicans when many California Republicans were comfortable phone by mail, and Scott, I know you talked to many election officials in Red counties who have used, you know, using vote by mail for years. And so it's It's a weird interplay of the national Republican Party, taking this really strong stance that I think ultimately has hurt the state and local Republican Party's politically

"Gi Hadid had her baby again. Zane Malik confirmed it. You know, this is the celebrity thing right now is to post a photo of your baby's hand. Around your hands, which I think is sweet because it gives people a glimpse of the baby and proves that the baby actually exists. But you don't have to show the baby space and a lot of super celebrities don't really want to do that. And that's fair. But Zane Malik, who is Gigi Hadid's Boyfriend posted. Our baby girl is here healthy and beautiful to try to put into words. How I'm feeling right now would be an impossible task and just went on and said, thankful for the life we will have together. "Millie Jackson reveal what the team was hoping to do for Social justice demonstration before their game last week. It's called abuse. Malik Jackson said yesterday. The Eagles would have liked to take a knee along with Washington right before kickoff. But he said Washington wasn't on board. Both teams take a knee and then declined the penalty and kick the ball off. But Heart logistically, Jackson said he would like to do something tangible making really statements not not holding arms. During his zoom press conference, Jackson was worrying a red hat that said, Make America arrest. The cops who killed Briana Taylor with great again crossed off, Jackson said. It was good. The city of Louisville pay Taylor's family $12 million, but added and change the culture of citizens paying tax dollars toe. Fun what the police are doing out here. What Has Changed Since George Floyd

"Protests against racial injustice are motivating some political candidates to take on challenging races. In the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona Democrats are targeting a predominantly white district that has been held by Republicans for nearly a decade. Steve Goldstein from member station Cage's reports. That ethics violations committed by the incumbent could make the race more competitive. Arizona six Congressional district is centered in Scottsdale. Its residents are highly educated, affluent and early 75% white Congressman David Schweikert was reelected by double digits here in 2018. But Schweickart had been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, and on Thursday he admitted to 11 violations and agreed to pay $50,000 fine Schweickart perspective. Opponents immediately pounced on the news. Here's Democrat Anita Malik. There's a part of me that's glad that we finally have closure to this investigation, but it is so infuriating to see him simply get off with a slap on the wrist. Even before acknowledging the ethics violations, Schweiker was already expected to face an intense general election campaign, in part because of an electorate that wants more action on combating racial injustice. One of the Democrats. Looking to challenge him is African American businessman Carl Gentles. While he believes many here are worried about education and jobs, he says, the killing of George Floyd has led to more direct conversations about racial injustice in the district has seen before. While George, Florida's African American I am an African American, and certainly I can see myself my son, my father, my brother in the face of George Floyd beneath that. Officers NI. I think people can see their own family members, no matter what race they are in the face of tourist Floyd Tianna Chander is one of those people Gentles is describing. She moved into the district eight years ago. Rallies and protests illustrated for her the dramatic need to find solutions. Chandler is middle aged and white. It's not okay to just be silent anymore, and we've got to figure out what the heck got us to this point and how we can try and sort of turned the tide and get rid of some of that racism. Hate Willingness to look the other way when things that we know what an OK continue to happen. Schweickart has been silent on race related topics. But the changing political environment since the killing of George Floyd may force him to talk about them. Erica County, which accounts for 60% of arrows on his population, has seen a clear shift toward more progressive voting in 2018 that included pushing Kirsten cinema to US Senate victory, becoming the first Democrat to win in arrows in a Senate race in nearly 25 years. But it's not just that Phoenix is growing rapidly, more diverse as Quentin James He's the founder and president of collective Pack, which is focused on electing African Americans across the country. There are a ton of suburban white women who are seeing these videos and wondering If those votes for Donald Trump in 2016. If don't do that, again, Republican consultant stand Barnes understands why Democrats are generally optimistic about 2020 here but says it's misplaced in the Phoenix suburbs. I do not think the racially charged politics that we're living in that the moment plays favorably for the Democratic nominee. In that congressional district, in part that it's so overdone, and I think voters are numb to that kind of play. But Quentin James believes that voters now more than any other time in recent history, are looking to choose the best candidate. Whatever color they are part of what folks One also know is Do you hear me? And are you going to fight for me? And it doesn't take white voters to get white candidates just to do that, or Blackwater's only looking for black answer. I think that's the core question, James says. As candidates of color are becoming more common, voters are increasingly more comfortable with choosing them to bring about changes many in the public are calling for for NPR news. I'm Steve Goldstein in Phoenix.

"Yes is the person who called ultra boaters racists and eighty great what up baby and then she she has a new chance I was all right okay but she wants you to treat it like a prayer what a it didn't you needed you need to approach this new chant like it's a prayer just listen to your I will I have so many questions now what is the new religion hating trump who are we bring to Malik who I don't understand we would win what I don't understand why the house okay greschner district I'm not I don't know he should have some very deep seated problems yeah I think so yeah but I don't doubt that at all jolly okay grandpa women when that B. movie actress said we what did she mean my little granddaughter but what does that mean Lee okay as far as the impeachment stuff I think there are people on the left that really do believe it's the right thing to do and I think that's hard to understand to me it is if you're just looking at the facts are reasonably but that's where it is I I don't know what to say about it the more divided but it's not gonna happen said it's not going to remove them we know what it is that it what else is there to say it just goes on and on and on with this the debate going on even before they vote okay moving on three round when you do okay yard alright countably want to get to this you know it's the cold flu season right yes do you know how to avoid getting a cold do you see this story can never interact with anyone no it's to get the flu really yes do you ever heard that before I won't get a cold I get the flu yes okay I don't think I want that's not a good trade off this was a study done in Scotland that I did you know you can get a cold and the flu the same time but you can't did you know that David I know skin clue usually if one is gonna know sat right is it would be day yes so those viruses both create an inflammatory response in your body that basically acts like a barrier to the other one so the one that gets there first wins out unfortunately they don't block other illnesses from getting through like the flu actually makes you more susceptible to pneumonia mmhm but between those two it's kind of one of the other so there you go I mean I'd rather have a cold and the flu you and me both the flu can get violent yes this that's no good and here we are not quite past the holidays obviously were still a week away but people are already talking about depression because depression can happen before Christmas time and it certainly you get into the doldrums of January it could happen yeah so research has been done and this we found that study fights the one way to beat your winter depression is by doing what not eating Christmas desserts that doesn't sound right does it in no way to treat my depression this is university of Kansas saying the you can help avoid feeling bombed out of the winter but just avoiding sweets crash yes it's the sugar and is it leaves you in flames there's knurled biological processes that are connected then to depression and negative feelings so if you couple that sugar with the lack of sunlight and winner it's a perfect storm for depression well you the if you just keep eating the sweets then you're always on a sugar high so there you go it's sort of like you never hung over if you're always strong LRG before but I don't like it no time for being hung over I'm always wrong to correct it I can tell you something but I'm almost afraid that I'll jinx it but I don't believe in Texas struggle I'd say it you know people talk about you to give your body a break in it's healthy once you're done eating better even if you're having his or whatever just don't eat anything again the rest of the night and then space it out like fourteen hours before you eat again yeah I've done that for like maybe a week but for the most part you're taking I've noticed this and I just did it so I know it's not official which is a stupid Fitbit my sleep is way better because it right no matter how long you sleep even if it's five and a half hours you get a sleeve score in it for a bit yeah for the week that I've done this my sleep is better than it's ever been number twice not amount of time I'm still under six hours more than I want to be but I'm like it has to have something to do with that that's not just by chance right possibly yeah I guess but if you're just having a few even if it's not like not like Jammin monster cookies down it you know ten o'clock at night a jury you know you gotta get hungry yeah yeah I've been around five something like eight or nine o'clock man kind of some sort of sex something whatever I don't know how that affects your sleep I'm sure there's people right now going yeah yet dope took you this long to figure it out I just while I'm kind of surprised by that like my cats in the closet that would help me so you can sleep yeah David just things you need to actually have some discipline in training you're right because I works it doesn't work here we go again from three hundred I never disappoint the cat besides and smack on the head when they beat something or go after something that's supposed you don't have to where you're suppose to discipline your data to use violence no this a light smack but missus mac that's a good or not that is a trick that no that's not good but just trains them to not get caught now we have the money I lay all he was I know and the baby blooming cat lover and the way to discipline this is fantastic animals like animals are not like kids they don't reason the same way so if you if you just they don't understand that violence right it's not violent tonight Mike nodded across the room just a tap on the head to knock it off well this is gone from hitting it in the head to a tap on the head you know well I mean I'm not an animal abuser I love my animals I don't want to give the wrong idea that I'm you know smack in my animals are because I'm not doing that I'm sorry but just so we will quick of this is funny you're not ex and we got to move on you know like at the bottom of the door when you got a hole cut out there's a little flap that a cat can get in and out of here but sometimes it's not you know like the clear plastic okay if you actually put hard plastic and then watch the cat repeatedly knock it so see that's mean that's where you last me yeah people put videos online and then we talk about cats in the that show.

You're supposed to keep the helicopter still right but I couldn't do that I kept doing that because I couldn't just couldn't keep it still and I was doing that a my wife who suffers from terrible travel sickness she got on and she just went you went that's amazing I want to do what my husband was doing she says no he wasn't doing it right that's dangerous may be fatalities oh you got away with that I was talking to a friend of mine about an hour before we met because here's the thing I texted are about four five o'clock joe just to double check everything was alright because who came from Devon that's what he come from all the way from Devon to the Beautiful York there talk I just want to always want to make sure our I'm Jay and I knew he was here and that's fine I texted Arnesen when you is he said when you get a yoke a whole I'm just give me a tax make sure that everything's fine ten minutes nothing thirty minutes nothing fifty minutes now at this moment I'm starting to sweat and I'm thinking we've got a lovely crowd of paper to say what the fuck am I gonNa do if Art Malik is on a train and he didn't get his phone is fine I could relax but I was talking to a friend time and she was saying a huge Fan of yours she was when she was younger watching children the crown tonight and she obviously she fell completely in love with you but she'd never seen Pakistani actor on the television and then thinking about you and I was thinking about your influences who we use and at the time I suppose the people that I saw would be people uh-huh we'd Dean Tar you nurse well they would they were on television they were actors Y'all I mean they were the first sort of wave of act offers that played Indians and they did things like that passage to endure in the western I'm Eric I remember watching Tarik Unis in play at the ABC on a BBC film but they used to call them plays of the day just like mini films and it was called passage to England and it was about this man who was just a con artist right and it was a wonderful performance and I saw that and I thought I yes you want us to understand my father was an ice surge in all my brothers were doctorate and philosophers and brains I do actually my oldest brother is a research and so when I decided to give up tertiary education so to speak and said to me other I want to be an actor just silence obviously he just had no idea it was like what I wanted to be an active but doing what I said you know plays that like you know they're replace and he said well we never went to never watched movies never watch television really but where did this come from for you I think it came from a desperation yeah I knew when I got my one level that I was never gonna be as good as my brother's bite so I thought what I think I can do something else and then I remembered that the best time I ever had was in an inter house play which was called the pen of my own I played the and and when you were fourteen year old boy and you sit down you sit down that's what you do you forget what about the fact that dresses on tend to do that keep their legs together anyway it was a how Inter House competition and the five judges each one would give four points so the most you could get was twenty least you could get was five we got four judges I can't no no beat a house was dreadful talk about moving to England I'm Ryan saying he moved when three I was three and this is this where it was just my father you had experienced the the independence for Pakistan and he he then left Bohol where we were he he was with my my mother who was pregnant at the time and she had a one year old so pregnant with a one year old independence came they left India to go all the way to Pakistan many got to Pakistan he had my mother gave birth to my second brother and then there were two others and then I came along and at which point my father decided to come to Britain right and I never saw him till I was about three he came here primarily because he wanted to be an ice search and that's all he ever wanted to do came to Britain he wanted to be Mister Malik and as soon as became Mr Malachy went back to Parker slot one has to remember that this was a man born in the twenty s he was somebody you wanted to have a nation that was his as we go into Brexit in water news day today is he wanted two have his own rule determination and that's what he wanted he wanted to be an eye surgeon he came he became Mr Malik and he went back to Pakistan the living us here with your dad being away a lot and you being so young what how did that affect your relationship with your dad well it's I mean I think my father had had picked up parenting by the victorians given this taking this British lit right well basically what you ignore you children let run that sounds rather good so mom does all the cooking and shouting and I just beat them up so that's so we didn't really I mean all all of us all all six of us really had a very straight inge relationship with their father because he never really said anything I mean I remember you when I was at Guildhall when I finally got into Guildhall and I was in my final year Sherry on and my father was actually in town and I said you never when do you want to come geneticist three four shows on Wednesday Thursday this two on Friday come Friday whatever only said they'll come Friday evening right so of course there there was and exact placed in a one fool chair a seat in the theater at killed because I thought that's where I'm going to be acting I'm going to be acting down stage left so I wanted to see me an all I saw was an empty chair and it wasn't that he had chosen not to come it just never crossed his mind to actually take not much interest in his children I mean wonderful died I know that sounds really odd but he was he was lovely and all the rest of it it was just he was like would you want to be ah good luck and away you go I'm sure you'll be fine that's even that makes me even more sad that it did across his mind no he he never he told everybody else that he thought I was one of the good enjoying the crown he's he's good he's good he's one of the good years yes we've never said it's never no no never it's forty nine because sometimes you think Oh God is this is this a generational thing I remember years ago we know that I never bring this podcast about me and it's not but this is a Lincoln I remember years ago I always thought that my parents would only think I was a success if I was walking on the couples and coronations traits beam from the north no because that's what they watch and his house all the time so you you kind of strive to do apple obviously coming.
