"99 days of lockout and I think for a lot of us we weren't sure if this day was going to come anytime soon So the fact that we're looking at just a week later than what was supposed to happen that baseball is being played Starting today it's exciting And you just mentioned it we did have a 99 day lockout and there was some very contentious negotiations on both sides of the issue A lot of fans were angry at the Players Association and the owners How much harm did negotiations do to baseball I don't think that I honestly think in the moment for sure I mean it was a ton of negativity I think when we get into games talking with friends I think everyone who was in it was like this is catastrophic And I think honestly it would have been had this season started four months late two months late that we didn't get to do a 162 games But ultimately for the casual fan that's going to look up in July and notice that there really wasn't any difference at all just what was happening in the off season versus what we've seen in baseball's past when we've had lockouts during the season Back then are still around now If that's not resonating through the minds of the people at the top of Major League Baseball and at the top of the Major League Baseball Players Association they need to reassess their priorities If you stop and they were never able to even complete the season or have a World Series and get all the games in or stats were skewed I mean that affected everything But for this year I mean if we look back on 2022 we'll remember what happened leading into it But I don't think it affects anything once we get going So the last time there was a lockout in 1994 it took about 11 seasons for in stadium attendance to rebound In the past couple of years before the last two pandemic era seasons attendance started kind of slipping back down the slope So are you worried fans won't show up to games or do you think they're going to come back hard since we're pretty much back to normal now Yeah I mean I don't see it affecting anything This point of just talking to my brother in law who had big Mariners tickets for next week was bringing a son.

"Are just hopefully some perspectives that are useful to people who don't spend time in the Clubhouse and don't necessarily know that that's what's going on. But I don't think it's unfortunately anomalous. I do think that this is, this is pretty commonplace in the minor leagues, unfortunately. Rhett? Yeah. Well, you know, another thing that's important to consider also buster is that there's no baseline, right? So there's no baseline for what teams need to need to give players and as far as nutritional baselines, there's no food guidelines that need to be followed. So, for example, I was lucky, right? The Washington Nationals did a very, very good job with food. Okay, postgame, they paid for every single meal. The food always had high nutritional value. And most importantly, there was enough, right? And the reality to that is, I would talk to my friends about the spread, right? Guys that are in different organizations when I say spread postgame spread, right? Postgame meal. And they'd say, yeah, dude, we got hot dogs and a couple stale burgers from the concession shop that they didn't sell. I have friends with the Dodgers who say that they get, you know, four or 5 star meals after every game. And I have friends with other organizations that say, sometimes we didn't even eat. They didn't even supply food, right? So there's no baseline. And every organization operates so differently when it comes to food in itself. The only thing that they share in common is the lack of per diem that players get per day to be able to eat outside of the field, right? So if players can't afford because they're per diem is too short and their wages too short, if they can't afford to eat outside the field, they're stuck with the food that they're provided with, right? If there's no baseline for the food that's provided, then it's really hard to keep your players fed and keep them eating at a high level. So we know what the owners could do. And I've always been curious about the relationship guys between Major League Baseball Players Association and the minor leaguers. Because there have been times where, you know, from the outsider's perspective, for example, with the sliding rules that essentially the interests of amateur players have been traded off to benefit major league players. And that's choice that the union made. I'm curious from both of your perspectives. Is there something that the major league players could do to help minor league players in their living conditions? Rhett? Well, you know, I would say that the overall overwhelming majority of major league players have minor leaguers backs, right? You know, if you look back to COVID, how do you not look at a guy like David price, right, who donates over $200,000 to the Dodgers organization? Just put an extra money in those guys pockets. During COVID, the nationals were trying to cut the amount of money that we were receiving, right? Every single month or every week, actually, it was weekly. And the major league players on the nationals headed up by Ryan Zimmerman said that's ridiculous. We are going to create a fund out of our own pockets to make sure you guys get paid, right? And then miraculously all of a sudden, ownership said, oh, we'll pay. Right. So I would say they got embarrassed. They got embarrassed and do a concession. The same thing happened when the Oakland athletics where I think what they reduced the minor leaguer salaries from 400 to $300 a week. Right. It was literally. I think that with the nationals, it was like 400 to three 50, right? But at the end of the day, if that doesn't prove that the major league guys have our backs, then I don't know what does. And I think that the correct perspective, right? From the outside looking in is that they do. They really, they do have our backs. But you know, they can only have our backs up to the extent at which their union allows. Yeah, listen, I would agree. I would agree with red on that. I think, you know, I would also say that major league players go through the minor leagues first, right? And then go through years of team control at the major league level. So between the 7 years of control and the minor leagues, 6 years of control and the major leagues. Very, very small. That's 13 years. Of team control before players can get what they're actually worth on the open market, right? So it is very understandable, I think, to me and to others that what they're focused on is changing a system that is not fair for them right now. And so what we're doing on our end is focusing on our issues, I think they're doing focusing on their issues. But I do believe that what we're trying to do with advocates for my leaders and what we've seen from minor league players in terms of coming together around these issues right now is new and is opening a lot of eyes among major league players in them a lot of different people. And I really look forward to continuing to see where this goes because I really hope that all players can work together on behalf of each other at some point down the line, even though it hasn't happened, you know, to this point I'm optimistic about the future. Yeah, you guys have made progress and there's more progress. It's needed for players. That's for sure. All right, thanks for joining us. It was great to talk to both of you. Thank you. Yeah, it's great. Bleacher.

"Is a tricky situation to talk about here because obviously this is a family friendly podcast so i have to watch my words and ultimately how i described some of this situation out there but essentially what is trevor. Bauer been accused of well. Trevor bauer and a woman had consensual relations out in los angeles over the past month or so but was not considered. Consensual or is currently up for debate is the aggressiveness of those relationships. Between the two. So she alleged the woman in this case that Bauer choked her until she lost consciousness on multiple occasions. She then woke up with some bruises on her body some scratches on her face and once again. There's there's a fine line here. When it comes to consensual relations and how aggressive those relations can be cut because some individuals do like things to be more aggressive when they are enjoying themselves. But there's a fine line between enjoying yourself and crossing a criminal line right an investigation so this is a case of. He said she said we're both parties. Said yes the relationship was consensual but the extent of what happened during that relationship. Not so much so basically major league put. Trevor bauer on leave for the next seven days while they can investigate as well as the local police authority will be investigating ultimately to see if there was a crime that took place against trevor bauer. And if it doesn't get resolved in the next seven days which. I don't believe it will major league baseball kim request a one time extension of its administrative leave for an additional seven days with consent from the major league baseball players association now of course recently. A huge emphasis has been put on domestic violence and sexual assault for major league baseball. And this is one where there's a fine line because again. The relationship being consensual just what took place and the amount of what happened being currently what is being discussed. So i imagine it's just tough right. I kinda wanna keep this one of the facts for you guys because just based on family friendly program. You can't really get into too many of the details about what happened here. Ultimately you can certainly do your own research type into google. See what you want if you want to stay away from it. That's fine too but again. This is a huge story in baseball. The dodgers currently being tied for first place in the national league west. One of their top starters. Raining cy. young award winner isn't going to be available to pitch for them over the next couple of weeks here so i don't know how this one's gonna play out of course there's kind of three things right. You have the criminal core that is currently going through. Its process to see whether he broke any laws or any jail time prison. Time the criminal side of things. Then you have major league baseball's side of things right so even if he's not charged with a crime ultimately baseball could suspend him. We've seen cases be dropped in the past but players still be suspended by major league baseball and then of course you have the court of public opinion being the third one to say. Hey we're not a huge fan of this guy or what's happening overall here so certainly kind of three different situations that have yet to play out based on the information the investigation the interviews and everything. That's still taking place out there. And i'm gonna let you guys decide for yourselves where you fall on this one ultimately and i'll just keep you up to date with the facts that a current criminal investigation is taking place and while this is taking place major league baseball certainly doing their own investigation into the matter to try to come up with their decision on how they're going to move forward here so another negative new story out of major league baseball baseball just cannot get out of. Its own way here and i. It's just frustrating from a baseball guys perspective to have to report on this type of stuff for you guys out there but of course want to keep you updated gotta do my job here gotta be a professional so certainly wanted to keep everybody up to date with the latest on. What's taken place but that'll do it here for segment number. Two of the see baseball podcast brought to you by. I want to deal with the Bengals in the seven o'clock hour on a piece of Paul dinner, Junior wrote from the athletic That'll make your head explode. That will lead us into a topic around 7 20 I saw and read it yesterday and I've saved and I think we can present tonight to have some fun with it. SB Nation wrote something today about Tom Brady. I think we can make a Cincinnati topic tonight in the eight o'clock hour is about Tom Brady being one of the most one of America's most polarizing athletes Today in You know me, I'm always looking to localize it tied in and I thought, well, then who would be the most polarizing Cincinnati sports figures through the years? Round here will do that and more. Let's get to it. We begin with the Reds. Couple of different things developing. We'll see what we make out of it. I was I was struck by a tweet I got last night after the show. I want to say it was who moves from a Rob Mueller. Who said the Reds have created absolutely zero Or even negative interest in their product since a team that's sorely underperformed most of last year. It was his tweet. The redhead created absolutely zero or even negative interest in the product since the team that sorely under performed most of last year, and my response to him was it's striking. That's one word. Another might be frustrating, but I'm going to go back to this well again because of where they were for six years of losing. What they did last offseason at this time. What? We were talking about it This time I go back and look, I keep the show sheets of every show. I do. I go back and look at what we were talking about it in like this week a year ago. And I looked at all the stuff we were talking about involving Mike Moose, Takis and show Go Akiyama and Nick Castano's and figuring out the batting order and figuring out how this team fit in comparison to the rest of the National League Central. We were talking about the starting rotation and how good it would be. And I think now of what I've spent time Topic wise on this offseason. And it hasn't added up. Much at all. There's been very little reaction to the whole shortstop conversation. I think, in some cases because either some don't even know who the names are or have reached the point of Disappointment. And I was talking about this lunch today. They ended last season closer to Winning the division being a winning team than being closer to a rebuilding team. Yet how have they approached this off season? The end of the year on the scale of Ready tow win versus rebuild it. They ended it closer to ready to win, but not good enough. They got in because of it expanded playoffs, and then they were quickly dismissed. And I think the frustrating thing is, I used the analogy over the weekend. It has been a fence straddle this offseason. Straddled the fence. They've really done nothing of significance. Either way in the in the last place you wanna be in sports is fence straddling. MLB players union rejects league's latest offer

"On a return to work which will likely lead to litigation and the sports returned to a labour rift the union's action could lead to a season of about fifty games the players association could respond by filing a grievance that would be heard by an arbiter we're joined by ESPN MLB insider Jeff pastor Jeff as expected the players reject the latest offer from the owners the Players Association again asking the league to set a schedule rather than countering what does that mandated season look like what hello at this point because while Major League Baseball suggested that it will be in forty eight games that might do fifty games there's also the possibility that you could file a grievance against the Major League Baseball Players Association for negotiating in bad faith and breaching the mark agreement that has been part of this really part of the whole deal here and that would really blow things up so MLB's next move may be the most consequential of all but one of the players did today was was fourth pulling hand and and really show if there are going to begin this year we're going to get a sense of what they look like yeah you have that litigation as a by product of these negotiations so this is the last resort of a possible season and they'd also have to negotiate safety protocols which have to be agreed upon as well that said what's the earliest we can possibly see baseball played in a regular season boy it's tough to say at this point because I listen I'm not leaving out the idea that a negotiated settlement can come out of this you know the the PA today said I would feel like negotiations are over which is funny because honestly they never really started in the first place it was just to survive like talking over one another so I I still think there is the possibility of a sixty something games even if all the parties recognised just how stupid and self defeating this entire thing is and get together and get to see them on the board but otherwise if it's a forty eight fifty game season you know we're we're talking players not going to spring training for another month we're talking games not starting until after the NBA is scheduled to start at sometime in August and ending toward the end of September and then the you know just a regular playoff being played because the only way to have an expanded postseason like MLB and the players were both hoping for is that an agreement between the fact that in the absence of that we're just going to go back to the same one game wildcard out five game division series LPS World Series all right Jeff humor me for a second here our group is is known both sides know that in this scenario there is money that's going to be lost it's already known on both sides so why not anywhere in the range of sixty five to seventy five games full pro rated salaries and extra playoff teams like sixteen that's been bandied about so owners pay the players a hundred percent proration they get back some money with the extra post season games why couldn't that be some level of a compromise I think that's what the players were hoping for honestly and I think the players have gotten the sense that I think it is the the right sense that owner simply are not willing to do that they're not willing to guarantee the players one hundred percent of their full pro rated salary with the possibility of the post even being canceled on account of corona virus outbreak or or something else that that really could you know could derail the postseason there there is deep fear among the owners of the possibility of that eight hundred million plus dollars that they would get it from television rights in October just vanishing and in that money being important in their eyes to go and pay players yeah they they they are saying that their local television deals during the shortened season are going to be worth about nine hundred eighty thousand dollars per game they're also saying that players are going to get paid about one point six seven million dollars for games now the number about player salaries not in dispute the number about local television absolutely is in dispute it's something that frankly the value has been at the center yes the idea that clubs are going to lose as much money as they say they are and that's part of the reason why the players have been pushing it strongly if they have for their full pro rated salary they feel like they've lost a lot of money already to the games that haven't been place sure and they want to be paid for the ones that are going to be

All three letters L. O. T. hearing a lot of rumors about a certain player agent meddling in MLB Affairs Major League Baseball Players Association. If true and at this point these are only rumors. Now that I know and the included at burroughs corporation so Scott would see it very interesting To know all the behind the scenes of how this being I I think in general we know how it's being received when players are being asked to in many cases take a seventy five percent pay cut but how it is playing on one end of the pay scale versus the other end of the pay scale with the players making a million less basically getting that versus those when they hire in being asked to take dramatic pay cuts again for all the those who are bent out of shape and fed up. I I get that frustration to some extent. And we're GONNA do this early in the show tomorrow night but I also think people are are not factoring. This in the belief continues to be the season would start July the fourth. That was the proposal to begin with way back forever ago was the weekend of July. The fourth nothing that is taking place right now is blowing up their deadline. The thought is they still have up until June. The sixth. That's another ten days away. Nothing has changed from their original plan to play July the fourth so you can be frustrated that the deal's not done but nothing is changing the original plan. So maybe it's just the way I'm wired if if and then they say well. There's not going to be a season or well now. We're not GONNA have time to do this or that. That I could see like kicking and screaming and ranting and raving but to do it now just seems because you feel like being mad about something because nothing. They're doing is disrupting their original plan. Timeline that they set up to play baseball July Fourth. So until that changes okay. Let me know when you're done and we'll play baseball July. The fourth

Will issue of players' salaries cancel MLB season?

"Right so rob Manfred is the commissioner Major League Baseball and he's on a conference call probably still on this conference call with the thirty owners to talk about the move to actually hold some sort of a baseball season this season and what happens is the commissioner goes to the owners they agree on a plan and then they have to take it to the Major League Baseball Players Association the union for them to sign off on and one of the big sticking points is going to be the pay baseball teams are not making any money and one of the arguments is that this would be a season where all of the players get pro rated salaries and they'll try to do some sort of revenue sharing as well they want to propose revenue sharing plan that guarantees that players would get forty eight percent of all the revenue this year now it's common in other sports NHL NFL NFL players get forty eight percent NHL players get fifty percent NBA players get about that same way but it would be on precedent when it comes to Major League Baseball the salary reduction egg issue is what figures the most significant hurdle

Major League Baseball, players union reach tentative agreement to salvage 2020 season

"Yes a baseball on a stand still like the rest of the leagues Major League Baseball Players Association have a deal a path forward if you will is baseball tries to figure out when it will return from a stoppage because of this corona virus a pandemic mark to Cher was on get up on how MLB should resume I think we have to be very careful how much we mess with a game that is built for a reason I mean nine inning games are very important to our roster construction and frankly team that spent a lot of money and spent a lot of time building a great bullpen which is what a lot of teams like the Yankees are doing nowadays that's a huge disadvantage to teams with good bullpens but I want to talk more about trying to squeeze as many games as you can into a shortened season is all about the money for the players and and Major League Baseball and I get it I understand that you want as much revenue as possible we have to be careful how much stress you're putting our players and how much you're actually changing the game well let's talk about the stress should be putting on players I assume primarily we're talking about pitchers and pitchers arms we see them somewhat dropping like flies anyway just in the normal course of order here is is that what your primary concern would be exactly that is remember guys started their offseason throwing schedule you some some guys start before Christmas but they've been throwing all ready for for five months you're going to continue to stretch the season out longer there's no doubt it's going longer we can debate how long it should go but you're going to have these guys especially starting pitchers get started stop start stop they don't know exactly how long they're gonna have to be throwing and then you're gonna throw guys notable times a week potentially bullpen guys gonna be over used so we have so many Tommy John surgeries and and shoulder surgeries in baseball we'll have more if we mess with the

Adam Wainwright: MLB Players Will '100 Percent' Go on Strike, Barring Change

"Long-term deals, obviously. It's no secret that the players are upset with how things are being handled this off season with Bryce Harper. Manny Machado, Adam Wainwright from St Louis cardinals chimed in on this. And he said in a recent radio interview that unless something changes there's going to be a strike one hundred percent and continued by saying that he's worried players might just walk out mid so on size are offsides. Major league Baseball Players Association will strike within the next few years onsides because you have a problem here. Flyers having to wait so long to get a contract or players not getting paid what they think they are worth. Now, there could be there should be some Justice baby from the players, but it's a problem in the sport right now. And yes, if it continues, which you have no reason to believe that it will stop. I will think that eventually be a strike the players will be fed up. And it'd be terrible for baseball. Because that's a sport. That is not as popular as it once was and if you alienate your younger fan base with the strike and not give them baseball. Yeah. You could lose a big portion
