Michigan AG Encourages Drag Queens in Schools

"You have an idea of the destructive nature of the left. As a piece from the daily mail a piece of news that I did not mention to you, a drag queen for every school Michigan attorney general faces wrath of the daily mail, faces wrath of Republicans as she hits out at fake issues. During civil rights conference speech and muses, drag queens make everything better. Michigan attorney general Dana nessel has hit out at those outraged by drag queens hosting educational events for young children, saying that they should be in every school. Every school is direct quote, another woman destroying the country. The predominance of women in the education of children. She's attorney general. She's not an educator. But this is a phenomenon that maybe unique in history.

Did the Uvalde Police Fail the Children and Teachers?

"Take this from the daily mail. Why didn't they go in, chilling first image from inside Texas school shows cups with rifles and ballistic shields and corridor 19 minutes after gunmen entered, but they waited another hour to storm the classroom. Is that incorrect? Well, I think it's not a complete synopsis of what exactly happened. You know, when I read these stories and they say, the officers didn't go in. They don't go through and explain why. They don't give a synopsis of what was the door situation. They paint the picture as if they just stood there and they could go in and they should have went in and the door was wide open and they could have gone in and killed a guy. I don't think that that's the totality of what happened. I think that there's a lot more nuance to it. It appears, in my opinion, that they believe that they couldn't get through the door. They did not have a way to breach the door. There was a search for keys to the door, and it's not as simple as most people think that you could just run through the door and it magically opens and you kill the suspect whom you probably can not see. Given the conditions, it's a lot more to it than this. And I think that people are emotional and they rush to judgment because of the visceral experience of thinking about children being killed, thinking about images that they see without understanding the full context. Okay, so give me the full

The Fed Is Desperately Trying to Manage Inflation

"Let me get to this fed move that frankly is just too little too late. Typical typical typical Federal Reserve. This particular fed, however, I'm really, really, really, let me be nice. Let me just say I'm disenchanted with them. Let me not be so nice and just say I'm pretty disgusted with them because they had every opportunity in the world to fix this and they never took it. And I'm not sure why. I'm not sure why Jerome Powell would have allowed inflation to go so unchecked and tried to make a swallow this idea that it was somehow transitory. Transitory my, you know what, okay? I'm sorry. But inflation is now embedded in our economy. And yes, I get it. There's external factors going on, but let's still get back to basics. First of all, in terms of energy prices, right? And we've been through this, even though Joe, thanks. Even though the president thinks somehow it's just a conspiracy against him and everyday Americans buy big oil, the reality is he did this himself, okay? Bad policy on the energy front. And then you have other factors that went into it. He pumped so much money into the economy by the way, the $1.9 trillion stimulus. All that money. Plus his big stimulus check that one in the mail as soon as he got to office. I mean, my goodness. Meanwhile, Jerome Powell, he saw that happening. So what the heck was he doing still printing money? I mean, talking about just overkill. It was so obvious what was happening all the data was there. We saw the inflation, all the numbers were ticking higher and they sat there and said transitory transit Dory transitory. You know what I don't believe in anything these guys

Did you happen to catch attorney general Barr yesterday? He was talking generally about voter fraud, but he specifically also talked about 2000 mules. Any response or thoughts about Barr's testimony? You know, I didn't get to hear very much of it because I was traveling, but the part I heard, he was pretty much discounting that there had been any election fraud in correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you, mister president for asking, did you catch our interview with president Trump just over a week ago? He was on the show for almost 40 minutes. We blew through. Who needs breaks? The economy, his second term, the bench. You don't want to miss it. Likewise, you don't want to miss a trip to Israel later this year with our super productive Salem colleague dinesh d'souza and his lovely wife Debbie. We are going to the Holy Land to walk where our lord and save your walk the earth, even if you've been to Israel before it doesn't matter because you haven't been with me and dinesh will be there standing on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. It's going to be the trip of a lifetime. I'm not vaccinated and I'm going. They've got no restrictions. They've dropped them all. So you've got no excuse. Reserve your seats today called 5 6 5 55 19. That was far too quick slow down gorka. 8, 5, 5, 5, 6, 5, 55, 19, stand with Israel to dot com stand with Israel to dot com and as if by magic, who have we got with us today, dinesh d'souza, yes, indeed dinesh. We've been trying for weeks to get you back on the show so delighted that the success of 2000 years has made it difficult to get you back on, but you're with us right now. Welcome back to America first. Thanks, have really appreciate it. And yeah, boy, you know, when we released the movie, it seemed we were facing so many obstacles and then on top of that, the reluctance of Fox to even mention the movie, but it seems like we've been able to navigate around all that and I'm really thrilled that this new Rasmussen survey that came out say because Rasmussen is good. Are you tweeting it out? I retweeted it, explained to our millions of listeners what this poll said. So I actually had asked the Rasmussen guys, would they be interested in bringing in a kind of a focus group that would look at 2000 meals, independent voters, just to see the impact of the movie on people who are not committed politically one way or the other. And they go, well, we have an even better idea. We'll just do a national survey on 2000 mules and ask people, are they Republicans, Democrats, independents? Have they seen the movie? Have they heard about it? And if they've seen the movie, what is the impact of the movie in convincing them or not convincing them? Whether or not the election was stolen, whether or not there was systematic fraud. And what I found amazing is that not just a majority of Republicans, but a sizable majority of Democrats and independents who have seen the movie were persuaded by it that there was systematic fraud in the 2020 election. Wow. Wow, that's stunning. Look, I am so honored that you asked me to be part of it. You had a genius idea to bring your Salem colleagues to a room, show them the evidence that you, Catherine, and Greg Phillips, found and then film our reactions and make it part of the movie. "Address the big issue of the film I was involved in. It's 2000 mules. It is the proof that everybody says doesn't exist. The two Giga, no, two petabytes worth of data, almost 5 million minutes of CCTV camera footage that dinesh d'souza brought to the table with Catherine engelbrecht. We were told that it didn't happen. We're conspiracy theorists, it's out there, record breaking more than a million downloads more than a 100,000 DVDs, mailed out. I'm sure you've seen the movie. We were there at Mar-a-Lago with the president watching the premiere. Do you think documentaries of this Elk can have an impact on the next election, do you think there are people who will say, yep, those crazy conservatives were right? Yeah, I do, actually, because I think that this keeps the conservative movement fired up and it keeps us, I think, focused on what are some real election integrity, issues, which we all knew they were there, and I think it breitbart, where we did hundreds of stories on election integrity in the run up to the election. I mean, dating back to 2015 or we were concerned about some things within the system. And then, of course, afterwards, a lot of the things that we were focused on were some of the things, like, for example, this community organizing, which was really on display in the film, where you see people who are clearly community organizers, no doubt paid operatives of the left, driving from ballot box to ballot box, stuffing them with God knows what. Maybe legitimate votes, maybe semi legitimate votes, maybe illegitimate votes. But we all know that that's not how our elections are supposed to go. We've warned about that exact same stuff and to see the evidence. I think does focus the mind. And I think focusing on things like that and not on things like dominion voting machines, I think is very important. I think the right knew something was up. They knew that Joe Biden, who campaigned from his basement, didn't get a record setting 85 million legitimate votes, but how did we get to that number? I think now we're starting to actually see things that make sense to people. And I

What's the Latest on the Pennsylvania Primary Race?

"Well, David, we have an embarrassment of riches today as far as topics go. I've got this list here. We can go through for an hour, but let's see where we're at. Let's start with Pennsylvania Senate race. David McCormick is a mirror 987 votes behind Doctor Oz and they are still counting. What do you think's going on there? Man, $64,000 question. It's possible that when all the votes are counted and the mcclernand will be on top, even if he's not, and I'd rather be awes of I had to choose at this point. I'd always really rather be the guy in front. Even if I've holds them off, there's going to be a recount because it's going to be triggered under state law. The candidate that's losing at the end of regulation can forgo the recount and just decide to lose. I just don't think that's going to happen here. Of course, the real news here is that the McCormick campaign is suing in state court to compel all 67 counties to count mail in ballots that were received on time and have no other flaw except for there is no gate handwritten on the outside of the envelope as required by state law. Now, they're using a you're the lawyer here, but they're using a decision rendered by the third circuit on Friday that have nothing to do with this election, but at 2021 election at Lehigh county Pennsylvania. "There are some very important races coming up and one in particular that we want to highlight for you is a contentious gubernatorial primary. It's happening in the great state of Georgia, love Georgia and great people there. Unfortunately, they have a horrendous governor, and with us right now is someone former senator from Georgia, who is primarying the sitting governor of Georgia, who is no longer a senator largely because of the sitting governor of Georgia, and that is David perdue, who is in a very contentious primary against governor Brian Kemp. Senator perdue, welcome to the Charlie Kirk show. Charlie, good to see you again, man. Thanks for everything you're doing. Well, thank you. We did everything we could to try to push you across the finish line in that runoff. I believe that you would have avoided that runoff if the state of Georgia would have been run properly from an election standpoint with governor Kemp tell us why you decided to launch this primary, a primary campaigns can be very difficult, especially against incumbents, talk about that, while you're running and how is the race going? Well, sure. Thanks for coming down to George at that time. We had the whole world to send down here and you guys really made a difference. I should have never been in that runoff. This race was rigged and stolen in November 2020. Our current governor was Secretary of State for 9 years. He was governor for four. He's never enforced voting law in Georgia. He allowed a consent decree to go through that change voter ID on absentee ballots. He allowed 7 and a half million empty ballots to be mailed out to every registered voter. He allowed drop boxes and he allowed the change in the rule that allowed Zuckerberg to put $55 million into 9 Democrat counties. Everything I just mentioned is outside the law. So they violated the law by allowing all that to happen. And then afterwards, when I asked for a special session to get at to the problems before the runoff to fix these things, he denied that. I went to court, they denied that. I even asked for the resignation of our Secretary of State, I got so frustrated. Brad raffensperger. And since then, as you've pointed out, with Greg Phillips and Catherine inglebright in the ballot trafficking data, there is a hard evidence right now that governor has been covering this data and now is suppressing that evidence. Geo Tracking and the 'Gay Bathhouse' Argument

"I'm continuing a kind of highlight or analysis of my conversation with Philip bump in The Washington Post. And he disputes the validity or at least precision and the accuracy of geo tracking based upon an expert that he interviewed one guy who said, well, it's only accurate to about 30 feet. Well, that's not true. But let's say it is true. I don't think it changes our conclusions at all. For the simple reason that you've got a Dropbox. And you've got a mule within 30 feet, remember a human body is 5 or 6 feet. So 30 feet puts you basically within three or four human lengths of the Dropbox. You're in that vicinity. You're in that geofence or circle. Okay. And if it was only one Dropbox, you could make you could say, well, wait a minute. Maybe the guy was stopped to eat some popcorn. Or was reaching for his wallet? It happened to stop within that radius, but this is why true the votes high bar and by the high bar I mean, ten or more drop boxes. Totally settles the issue, because quite frankly, if you're within 30 feet of ten or more dropboxes, obviously you are going to those drop boxes to do what? Well, there's only one thing you can do. So you remember these aren't post boxes. You can't be writing a letter to your best friend from college. These drop boxes have one purpose. And that is to put in mail in ballots. They're ballot dropboxes. So the only reason to go to them is to dump ballots. So in fact, there's a guy who made a comment on social media. He goes, dinesh, you know, he goes, listen, he goes, what if I were to show that your phone was within 30 feet of a bunch of gay bath houses? Would you be okay with me saying that your regular frequenter of gay bathhouses dinesh and that I have proof that you that you that you did that? And I replied in a kind of a quote tweet and I say, hey, pal, listen. If you can find my phone within 30 feet of let's say ten or more gay bath houses in the period of let's say two weeks, yeah, you can reasonably conclude that I'm a regular customer. Why else would I be within the close vanity vicinity of not one not two? Not three, but ten or more bathhouses. So yes, use your own common sense and draw your own

Mail in Ballots Could Determine Outcome of PA Primary

"Who's going if you had to bet your house right now? Who's going to be the Republican nominee for the Pennsylvania Senate seat? Oh boy, we go from brown's playoff eyes to an even harder question. What I want to know, I don't mean to duck your question, but literally what we are trying to figure out this morning is how many mail in ballots need to be counted. And my answer depends on when we can get that question answered. Because McCormick has been leading mehmet Oz in the mail in ballots by about 9 points. So there's the potential there if there's enough of them that he could overtake on that. But we're trying to nail down how many there are. And there's a great idea. What's the minimum number of them that are out there, do you think? So what we think is what, in terms of yesterday morning, we got to count from the state in terms of returned Republican mail in ballots. And as of right now, there are about 20,000 fewer of those counted than there were returned as of yesterday. So I think it's reasonable that there's about 20,000 of those.

"mail" Discussed on The Double Shift

"So here's the January 22 update from Christina darling, the single mom of two in New Hampshire who ran for school board in Nashua. And in case listeners have been living under a rock or understandably tuning out the news for a while just in order to function. Yes. Let me remind you, the school board positions are some of the hardest and most fraught civic service jobs right now. Things are so heated over masks, COVID, and other culture war issues in her small city. The police would attend the school board meetings. Oh, my God, you know, civility, respect. No worries there. Live well in American society. So Christina ran for school board in this very intense environment. And here's how she described election night. You have all these people and they're yelling. You know, who has ward number this? Who has the numbers for this ward? I mean, I was just my head was spinning and I'm watching my friend furiously taking notes of, you know, how many votes did each person get in each ward? And all of a sudden she looks at me and she's like, you've got it. Your numbers are high enough you've won. No. That's how I get the call. I can't believe that. Two seconds later, I got the call. That said, congratulations. You have been elected to the school board. And I'm not gonna let it was kind of one of those shocking moments. We're all of a sudden you realize this is where I am in my life. How did I get here? And a few days after her win, she got another surprise. Apparently it's paid I thought it was a volunteer position. But no, it turned out the school board position pays $4000 a year. Well, my first thought had been how cool would it be to just put that money immediately into my kids 5 two 9 college plans? My kids future and their education obviously matters to me. It made me run for school board. And then I found out through my case manager that that $4000 was enough to put me over income and I would have lost my child care scholarship and my housing voucher the minute I signed the paperwork accepting it. I did the math and my child care would have gone from $20 a week to two 75 a week and my husband housing would have gone from 7 60 a month to 1875. And I realized that I wasn't going to survive. I would have had an eviction notice in my hand by February and I would have been out by March April, depending on how slow my landlord was. Oh my God, what in the actual fuck? I know. It's just so hard to process this twist because this unexpected pay increase was about to upend her entire life. This community service? I know. I know. So Christina didn't want to just give up the seat she just won. Of course not. Right yeah, because she felt like it would have been unfair to the people who had voted for her and would cause just too much turmoil for the board of education. So she did look into actually waving the money, just saying, don't give it to me. Wow. But she says she was warned against doing that because it could look like some form of welfare fraud. This is like dystopia, like you can't make this up. You can not make this stuff up. So after looking at all her options, Christina quit her full-time job to try to maintain her housing and child care support and will have to get by on the small savings she's been able to put aside plus money from a lower paying internship until she's able to get her youngest into kindergarten and won't have to pay for full-time child care this September. I mean, the amount of mental gymnastics that she has to go through to figure this out and quitting her job is the best option. There's a lot going on for me right now. But I will say that Christina hopes that at that point in September, she can cover the increase to her housing costs and can go back to working full time at her old job. It will mean picking up a second job, but I'm also willing to claw myself out if that's what it really takes. Wow. So you decided to leave that job and how are you making ends meet and managing your employment and bills now? Well, unfortunately, the first thing I had to do is reapply for welfare benefits. And that is, that is the hard truth of having to play the get out of poverty game. And when you fill out those forms, it's horrible. I felt like such a failure filling them out and being like, yep, not at my job anymore. Yes, I need food stamps. Wow, so just thinking about how hard you've had to work to make these jigsaw pieces fit together that don't want to fit like that there's this sort of like you want to invest so much in your community and by being on the board of education, but our system punishes you basically for taking on something new and earning more money. Do you think about why does it have to be this hard? Like why is it there's so much work going into just maintaining the sort of basic things you need, even though you're working really hard, you're taking care of your kids, you're doing the stuff for your community, but there's all this extra to make it work. How do you think about that? So I can't tell you the number of times that I have been on the phone crying to my grandmother and saying, how is it that I am working 50 plus hours a week? And I can't pay my bills without help. How is that? If you're doing the work, you should be able to get out and have the white picket fence that we're all told we could have. So that's going to be my life goal is I am going to do everything I can to make it so that other families like me aren't stuck in this position..

"mail" Discussed on The Double Shift

"So double shifters on this show, we've talked more than once about cohousing, with its common spaces and strong community. It offers kids freedom and independence to roam in a way that's pretty uncommon in childhood these days. And with loving neighbors invested in your kids lives, so much of the burdens of parenting alone are taken off your shoulders. I'm personally really interested in cohousing as a solution to so much of what's difficult about family life in America. So I'm really excited about this advertiser. Cohousing ABQ. They own four acres of land along the beautiful Rio Grande, just minutes from downtown Albuquerque. The community already has 12 kids and many aunties and grandparents, and they've supported one another through COVID and before, creating a culture of trust, fun, and care. All they need to be complete is you. They're looking for members as a start construction, and this is your chance to start living a parenting life that's more balanced and aligned with your values. Go now and check it out at cohousing ABQ dot org slash the double shift. To sign up for an info session and learn more about how cohousing ABQ can become your village. That's cohousing, ABQ dot org slashed the double shift. And it's also linked in our show notes. And we're back. Talking about the expanded child tax credit. Something we wanted to know more about with the CTC was not just the financial impact, but the mental health impact for families as well. I spoke with doctor Darby saxby an associate Professor of psychology at the University of Southern California and director of the USC center for the changing family. She believes living in a world of financial, uncertainty is hugely destabilizing to people. You know, one thing we know from stress research is that the kinds of situations that tax the body and sort of stimulate the biological stress response, our situations that are unstable, unpredictable, uncontrollable, where people feel a lack of autonomy. And poverty is sort of like a perfect storm of all of those situations at once kind of rolled into one. And the brain embodies response is to be hyper vigilant. To sort of always be scanning the horizon for threat to never be able to let your guard down because you don't know which shoe is going to drop next if you don't have that sort of buffer of the extra dollars in your savings account in case something breaks or a child care situation pops up. And sort of over and over again, there are those kind of repeated hits to the stress response system that we know sort of challenge the body by knocking it out of balance, like that sort of the stress response is something that throws our body out of balance that causes us to need to work harder to regulate back to baseline. And that's what those sort of repeated hits are challenges look like over time. Here we go on a little tax talk. Just a reminder about what was different about the 2021 child tax credit than previous years. So before 2021, the tax credit was $2000 per kid and only went to people who earned enough money to pay federal income tax. And it was credited just once a year at tax time. So the new CTC covered a lot more people, low income earners up to families making around a 150 K a year and the payment amount was expanded from 2000 to up to 3600 per kit. So, 6 months worth was paid monthly and then 6 months will be paid when filing the 2021 tax return. And also another important detail, it didn't impact anyone's eligibility for other social programs like Medicaid or food stamps. Okay, thank you. Thank you for walking me through that. And that's a very important point. So to sum up, more people eligible more money and for 6 months set, monthly payments rather than a lump sum. Exactly. You got it. Those are the highlights. Okay, great. So let's go back to you talking to doctor saxby, about the psychological impact of these monthly payments. So if the opposite of precarity is stability and regularity, what are your thoughts on the psychological impact of monthly payments like CTC specifically? Yeah, I mean, I think that's small sort of small or medium sort of like a regular predictable payment schedule is more impactful than even like a lump sum. So actually having money arrive in your account on a regular basis allows you to kind of plan and cover unanticipated expenses. So the stability and ability to plan. I think as parents, the ability to plan for all parents is a huge amount of peace of mind and stability. So the regularity of the monthly payments, what you're saying is could sort of have a greater impact than purely.

"We'll also keep sharing some important stuff there. Also, in the meantime, if the double shift has meant something to you personally or had an impact on your life, we would love to hear about it. You can send us an email or a voice memo recorded on your phone to ask the double shift at Gmail dot com. That's ask the double shift at Gmail dot com. And we might use it in our upcoming episode. And also, we would just love to hear from you during this season of transition. Yes. More soon. So now onto the show. So, remember, there was a hot second last year where for many families, the public policy version of a knight in shining armor showed up. I felt so seen and validated when I opened up my bank account and that money was in there. It was like, oh my gosh, like the calvary is here. Starting in July 2021, the expanded monthly child tax credit gave about 35 million American families up to 250 to $300 per kid, which many got delivered directly to their bank accounts every month. That's right. The child tax credit AKA the CTC lifted around 3.5 million children, out of poverty, and it helped so many families. Those families got what's likely to be their final monthly check on December 15th, 2021. Because the American families plan legislation that would have extended the program has stalled. The future of this support is uncertain, meaning families are likely to face a lot more financial precarity along with material and psychological hardship. I have not gone to bed, had a reasonable hour in a long time because I spend so many nights awake wondering, what do I do next? That's Christina darling, a single mom to two kids. I'm trying really hard not to let them see how terrified I am constantly of finances. That 500 plus dollars every month was such a huge help. Now I feel like I'm back to survival mode where everything is just, you know, I got $5 here that $5 has to go into rent here. And I mean it's literally like trying to fit a watermelon through 11. It just doesn't. Nothing computes. This is the double shift, and I'm your host, Catherine Goldstein. And I'm your co host, Angela garbage. And today's episode is a collaboration with the better life lab at new America. So we're going to share Christina's powerful story about how much this brief policy impacted her whole life, and her community too. It's really inspiring. It's inspiring, but it also has the most dysfunctional American twist, ever, not to be a spoiler, just to be a teaser here. But before we get back to Christina, we want to share some voices of people who responded to a call we put out last summer, asking moms how they plan to spend their brand new monthly CTC payments. You need child care in order to take a job. But you can't pay for child care until you have a job. And you have income. It's like a chicken and the egg sack. And it's maddening and what I'm hoping will happen is that we will be able to spend the tax credit toward some child care for my youngest son so that I can do a job search and gain full-time employment and then have more income to spend toward child care to put him in more care and have more money to pay for more child care so I can work more and get my professional life on track. That was Katie cashwell from Raleigh, North Carolina, and here's Milan bauder of Orlando, Florida. She and her husband have been working full time from home during the pandemic and caring for their young son. Our companies just never went back into the office. And so we've been home this whole time, just bouncing the baby back and forth between who has the call that can sustain screaming in the background the least. But it's no longer sustainable. So the child tax credit will help us to lessen the burden of having to pay for child care, but we also didn't want to skimp on just trying to find one of those day care centers, the ones that barely meet.

"Before we get started, I want to share an announcement. This episode will be our second to last show before an indefinite pause of this podcast. That's right. The double shift podcast will not be putting out regular shows in the short to medium term. This is sad for us, and we know this is probably disappointing or upsetting to you, our wonderful listeners. I know 2022 is really off to a roaring start. But we are going to have a big conversation about what went into this decision and what's next for both of us and what will be happening with the double shift because I've always thought that the double shift is more than a podcast. It's much more of a larger conversation, and it's really part of a movement. Yes. And it's a community. Yes. And, you know, the podcast may not be in your feeds for a while, but the double shift is still going to be up to some really great stuff that we think you will all love. And that's both for our members and our listeners, and also fans of me and Catherine's written work. Yes, this is not a death. "Yeah go go. Go ahead and write in and let us know. We'll share it with matt and the rest of the listeners. We gotta do these shows once a week. Folks so yeah. I'm happy to to have these these continuing conversations all right. Our next bit of listener mail comes to us from nick and this is in response to our episode or episodes on the furry fish. Hello robert and joe longtime listener first-time etcetera etcetera all. I could think about well. Listening to the fish for episode. Was jonathan colton song. Furry old lobsters originally written to help promote john hodgman's book areas of my expertise. The singer at first seems to be lamenting the loss of an old species of haired lobster only later in the song. Do we realize he is confusing the lobster with a completely different animal. If you haven't heard the song you should definitely check it out nick. I don't know anything about this. Oh so yeah. This was the audio book for Areas of my expertise by john hodgman Which i i definitely listen to this and enjoyed it quite a bit back in the day and i actually saw a jonathan colton in concert shortly. Thereafter played it a small. Then you here in our area and Yeah he's quite good. I feel like he's he's quite a talented musician. In you know he has some of these songs that maybe some people might think. Oh there's just kind of like gimmicky songs little comedy songs. But i feel like he's a really solid singer songwriter. So definitely worth checking out and as for hodgman obviously talented and funny guy. But i still can't believe all those people he mutilated on the nick who russ stuff. Who does he play on the nick. He a historical figure or just a look. I can't remember just characters. He plays a character. Whose whose whose answer. I think it's ba. I'm pretty sure it's based on a historic person. If memory serves but he plays a quack doctor of the time. Who believes that the answer any of mental issue is the removal of all teeth. And he so he's. He's removed multiple people's entire set of teeth to improve their Their demeanor and their their their their mental life including the teeth of his children. So he's this. It's it's the best in my opinion. It's the best acting role that i've seen john hodgman end because he's he's he's awful. He's awful in it. You're like oh my god. This guy is completely nuts one of these days. I'm going to have to watch that show. It's good it's it's not necessarily for the faint of heart. It's good i think it's all on. Hbo what is it hbo. "This challenge for her. So i also listened to the dirtbag. Diaries on my runs and had just listened to it. Basically when i got the letter and so as soon as it was like shenanigans challenge. How sick oh we know what this is. This is good. Fiona received her first challenge in april. Twenty twenty. I had to sneak a poem to a friend. I had to go on some kind of off trail adventurer and drink a beer had to draw a plant of some kind and so i kind of drew something basically in my backyard and i had to drought at three different scales to Very scientific you know. The bet was a six pack. Classic shenanigans plus handmade or homemade cottonwood bud solves instead. There is kind of the creative element. In what i would get in return for the challenge which also had a creative element in fiona completed her first challenge at the end of june. She sent photos of her adventures and the three part flower drawing back in the mail and received a six pack and handmade cottonwood salve exchange. A few weeks later fiona sent off a challenge for hannah. So the one. I got was running based so there is a minimum mileage and a minimum elevation gain. And which. I think is eight miles at least a thousand feet of elevation gain trail running and then at the highest point in elevation on the run. I got to make a nature art creation so kind of inspired by the artist. Andy goldsworthy if you've ever heard of him and then at the end to drink a beer and prove by like holding it over my head that it was empty and so that was really fun and challenged me to get better at trail running. 'cause i wasn't loving running daig hills had to run up this ferrans ridge. Which is this big ridge. Outside of jackson had to a new trail that was part of it. So i had i like trained to then run this new trail. That was a lot of consistent elevation gain. It's ocana several weeks to train four and finish her trail running challenge. She made it to the top of fans ridge in mid august drinker beer and sent photo documentation of her victory to fiona. When hannah got back home wilson. She spent a few weeks. Dreaming up fiona sneck shange and then sent that off in the mail in september. By the time fiona received the letter she had moved from. Bend to boise so this also became a theme like where either of located. How do we figure out how to challenge someone in a place. They barely know. And that challenge was. I had to bike a certain distance to a new to me piece of public land and then i had to run minimum four miles or something then bike back on the way home. Stop at a new to me bakery get a loaf of sourdough bread go home try the sourdough bread and then record a review of it in the style of the podcast. Antecedent reviewed size like showing up really sweaty to this bakery biking home with bread and then just standing in my kitchen like recording. I think i recorded like three different takes of it before. I figured out how to fully get it all to work. Thought was the sound of my brand new toaster oven being used for the first time. Ever on sourdot brad. That i just got from one of the very few surprisingly few bakeries in the city of boise surprising to me in a way because sourdot itself is such an old standby according to npr. Which i very much trusting. Sarah has been around since at least once beyond a completed successful. Take of her bread review. She zipped that along with other photos from challenge off to hannah. A few weeks later in november fiona sent hannah her next challenge. My second challenge was a beautiful logistical headache. The very fine ski season based in. So i needed to self propel at least one mile to approach to different skiers in the jackson area so for this. I used a lot of support so i had to run to snow king. Skin snow ski down pickup a pastry along the way and then go over to the jackson hole mountain resort self-propelled they're either running across countries Opted for cross country skiing take like lifts up to the highest point. I could get to and at that top spot to sketch the view and consume the pastry. And then get back down within a certain amount of time and that one. I finished within three minutes of the time. Limit is definitely a tighter one but it was.

"To any us i to answer questions from listeners. To editors many of you are familiar with tina jordan. Who is the deputy editor of the book. Review and elizabeth egan and editor at the book. Review our group text columnist and the author of a novel of her own called a window opens. Listen tina thanks so much for being here. Hi pal hi pamela. Thanks for having us all right. Let's take our very first question. It comes from ingeborg moran and she asks i'd like to know everyone's thoughts on the kindle. Has anyone become a kindle convert during kovic. She writes to us from pittsburgh pennsylvania. Alright tina ou. I will say this is a tough one for me because one thing the pandemic has meant for all of us on the books desk is that we're reading everything. Digitally and i have zero problem with an e reader. I actually use an ipad and not a candle. If say. I'm going on vacation but for constant everyday reading i will admit it has been a real drag i liz. I don't know if you feel the same way. But i cannot wait until the day when i'm only holding real books in my hands again. Tina i agree. I was actually a very early adopter of the kindle when it was first invented and i feel that it serves a purpose and has a place in my reading life but i feel like it is way more clinical than holding a physical book. You're missing the pge feel and the smell of the book. I have two very simple tips for anyone who is looking to weed into the world of e-readers one is to experiment with the font and find one. That feels most appealing to you. There are a few fonts on my kindle that makes me feel. They remind me that. I'm reading on screen and i have a couple that are more palatable than others. Here's my other tip. When i'm reading a book. I am an underlying her and appeared full folder and interactor which is a hard thing to replicate on the kindle. Even though you can highlight. So i put a post it on the back of my kindle and take notes that way. It's not quite as rewarding as doggy ring and taking notes in the margins but it does allow you to have the same vibe. All you actually raise an important point. Which is that on e-readers. You can increase the font size and for anyone who has trouble seeing tiny print for example. No one is in that age category around here tonight thinking of in my mother. I hope she's not listening. Shoot uses an ipad down loves it. You know because she can make the print big enough so that when she's reading in bed at night she doesn't have to have her glasses. You know i'm surprised. Neither of you is brought up for me. The controversial element of the raider experience. Which is the percentages rather than pages. I i feel like for me. That that's like the fitbit it's sort of both too much information and also not the right information. You know i feel like it would. It would take me down a very bad path. If i were to rely on things like percentages because i am finisher and a complete list in general and and i i do like to check things off and somehow that percentage thing i feel like i'd just become very focused on the numbers rather than what you should be focused on when you're reading which is in the words. Does that bother other view. Know it definitely bothers me and sometimes mind will say location instead of percent and it'll say location and then a number and that is baffling to me. I don't understand it. But i have learned how to use the go-to feature on mine which allows me to skip around a book and read the end before the beginning which i will admit i m prone to do. Oh i know. Don't ask but the other thing that i find problematic about an e reader as a as a reviewer who's who's reading a ton of books and kind of waiting a ton of books at once when i look at something on an easy reader reduces my recall like i can't remember the name of the author when i have a book in my hand i have almost a savant like ability to connect the title and the author and even the color of the spine forever in my in my memory i read. It is that that have shown this to be true. This it's a disadvantage for me. Because i can't remember what i've read and i can't place it in the same way which is also can be a good thing because it gives all book sort of an equal beginning in my mind.

"mail" Discussed on Journey to $100 Million

"All this mail is killing me. Hey there i'm erica. Wilson and i'm kevin daisy join us on our journey to building a one hundred million dollars company. What's happening. It's eric j olson. I don't know about you guys. But i hate mail whether it's email or still mail. It doesn't really matter to me. But i'm constantly battling mail now when it comes to email. I'm sure you're just like me where your inbox is a constant challenge. There's new emails coming in. You're always triage in those emails deleting this bam unsubscribe ing holier doing that. Then hopefully you're clearing out your inbox for me. I like to keep a clean inbox. Which means that. I like to delete stuff when i don't need to look at it anymore. Actually what i do. Is i don't delete i archive so i use g mail and archive at which means that. It's just not in my inbox anymore. But i've addressed it. Whatever i needed to address it and it goes somewhere else it goes to the archive folder. Was nice about that is i can then bring it back up if i need to. For whatever reason but it's out of sight out of mind that's email email's easy. Here's the problem and if you're listening to this instead of watching the video you can't see all this mail that i am showing. This is like three days worth of stale. So what do we have in here. We have bank statements from two different banks. We've got some invoices for some advertising that we're doing. I've got a personal bill in there. I've got a list of receipts a list of charges that i charge on our credit card. This isn't actually male. But this is something i need to take care of where i need to go. Find the receipts incentive. Over to it. Because i tell her that every charging is a receipt in case we get audited. And i've got periodical here. Virginia lawyers weekly. And so i read this to see what's going on in the law field and it helps us understand better one of our major segments which is law firm marketing. So i've got all this stuff. I gotta go through the problem with mail. Is that something you never really allocate time for. It's not like. I have an hour blocked off every single day or an hour and a half or even just a half an hour where i say. I'm going to go through the mail. So what happens. Is this stuff lands on your desk orleans in her inbox and all of a sudden. It's urgent right because it's there and it requires your attention to get rid of it and for me. I want to get rid of it and you probably do as well. You can only get rid of it if you actually give some attention and then do something with it. And that's really the problem here is that it just steals your time away. And that's why. I said at the beginning of this episode mail is killing me. I come into the day with great intentions. And then i had these urgent things like mail than i need to attend to. And it's a mistake. It's a mistake that i fall into a lot and i shouldn't. What i should do is put to the side and literally schedule half an hour. Maybe three times a week to go through stale mail and maybe half an hour every single day to go through my actual email and because it requires time and that's where people people forget that these things require time assistant requires time you put in your calendar and usa treated just like any other tasks and news be done is starting to get done just ran away but the problem is that but i'm wrong. It does get done random away so you may have a goal for the day but then you open your inbox. That's your have an steals your time. It's killing you so you need a system for handling mail. I don't have a great system as a matter of fact. If you have a really good system. I would love to hear about it. Because i'm kind of challenge in this area right now. Leanne email email. If you would hit me up on twitter. That's where i hang out. The most i am at i am eric. J olson that's erik with a k..

"Long term damage to to some of the most notable Republicans who were with Nixon till the end or till very close to the end that included George H W Bush that included Bob Dole they were obviously able to survive survive politically the damage of Watergate. And they were able to even thrive in the future and obviously the question then is does that have any any relevance to today in the telling of that maybe maybe you can see. There's there's a pretty significant difference between where things stand with trump right now and where they stood with Richard Nixon at the end the overwhelming majority of Americans by Ah the end wanted Nixon gone. Wanted him impeach. Thought the Senate should convict him. If it came to a Senate trial that is not where polling is on trump. There are plenty of Americans who do want him impeached in do want him removed from office but really the result of polling on trump and impeachment. Right now look a lot like the results of the two thousand sixteen presidential election that same basic divide is there and and again within the Republican Party trump still retains the overwhelming. I'm talking about ninety percent here. Overwhelming support of Republican voters. They are overwhelmingly opposed to impeachment again. The end by the end with Richard Nixon even Republicans. Even a large number of Republican. Voters turned on him. That is one of the things that made the nineteen seventy four midterm so disastrous for Republicans. It's hard to believe.
