It's an annual event. It's always well attended a walking tour of youngstown oak hill cemetery which is a fabulous historical research resource in and of itself and Syria hundred two hundred people come out for that. Unfortunately last year we are willing to do one in person program which was are amazing history race which is really a scavenger hunt that you get in your car to do so. It was easy to do social. He'd have to really worry about people if they're in their own vehicles driving around right so it worked out for us and and people had a good time in the middle of the summer but Those things happen. We have resources that our website Mahoning history dot org for learning opportunities. We put a lot more that up over the last eleven months. "Holiday season a time where we should re really giving an honestly with everything. That's happening we should be thinking of food. People's access to food at the forefront of all of our minds It is a necessity of our lives. Yes so going even into twenty twenty one As much as we wish this all just disappear soon as we cling are glasses. We know that's not really going to happen. So where what can people do to help. Right now. We're glad to take any nonperishable edem We have like our usual list of nonperishable things that are always helpful like the macaroni and cheese. The cereals canned vegetables and fruits and peanut butter things like that. But i also love when people think outside of the box. I had a little bit of experience. Said volunteering at a pantry and people that come there are just like you and i that have had some sort of problem in their life than might be. They need help time. They might need help for a few months. And then they're back on their feet but the dignity and the makes them feel even more special is when you have something at a pantry that they don't expect to see like that you and i would go the grocery store not hesitate to buy possibly or something fun. You know. some different type of cake mixes or things that we take for granted that we have in our cupboards but maybe they just don't have so when they see things like that you should see their faces light up and how excited they get because at that moment they get to be a normal happy regular person. aren't but it's very embarrassing in very hard for some of these people too difficult and ask for help and we don't want them to ever feel like that were there because they need us otherwise we would not be doing what we do is we want everyone to feel that there is no need for them to go hungry and when there's extra things like that that are involved it just makes it that much nicer for that because then they can actually shop at the pantry in picked up what they'd like that. Would that would be need to be able to always my favorite thing to tell people that do food drives. They got side the box if you were going to the store and you can get anything that you wanted. What would you like to have so that is true. Like think about when you're cooking your dinner when you open that jar ginger and it's not fresh ginger. It's be the pickled ginger and all those other little things that you don't even think about offering to the food pantry next time. Think to yourself you know what this may work for. Someone sure it's always fun to see something new and different..

"How nice and how that it's impact to our environment there is another Another one that their food pantry actually employed school like kids that were in culinary school and they gave some of the food and they were able to then sell another way for them to raise money and if it was a person that was only able to give a dollar for their meal whatever it would be but they would be able to experience culinary food shooting of whatever ingredients were available to them from i. It's just another way that they were able to give back health health. The problem at the same. Help to problems if you will. You're the need for food. Healthy food has well as the food waste. That was happening. And you know what's funny is a little bit of the research that i had done on some food waste. It's actually more expensive for you to throw it away in. Pay your bill Especially the bigger companies their trash bills verses turning it over donating it to a food bank we get the as we call the salvageable food..

"To introduce you in this story with you -ASEBALL walkup music no no no no we don't need that now okay we we might do it to you anyway just warning you okay okay I I met Logan Ice at baseball spring training that's the practice time before baseball season starts you've been with the Indian three APP drafted by the Indians in two thousand sixteen s Logan is twenty four years old he plays catcher and he's built like a catcher he square and muscular picture like a nine volt back story with legs three years ago Logan was playing college baseball he was eligible to be drafted by Major League Baseball team and if you happen to turn on the TV on the night of the draft the baseball experts really liked Logan Logan is they saved one of the best all around catchers in this draft a switch hitting that you're always a tough to find what do you think of Osu's backstop these got savvy I think he's got athleticism and agility behind the plate like this is one of the better college catchers out there on Indians ended up drafting Logan they liked him so much they paid him an eight hundred fifty thousand dollar signing bonus which is a lot of money but if things went well for Logan he could make so much money that that bonus would look like birthday card cash they're big leaguers playing Logan's position right now who make twenty million dollars per year but the way this works new players like Logan don't go straight to Cleveland's main team the one you see on national TV the one where guys are making millions no logan had to go and prove himself he got tossed in with the hundreds of other players playing on the Cleveland Indians feeder teams they're they're minor league teams Logan got sent two teams like the Mahoning Valley scrappers the Lynchburg Hill cats the Akron rubber ducks where the salary is not millions and last year in Africa what was your living situation so I was living on the couch for a little while lived in the hotel for a little while they give you a couple of nights how much you making if you can divulge her give me a range of thinking. Hey I want to say it's around sixteen hundred Aa I think is what it comes out to be something like that that's sixteen hundred dollars a month but only during the season no pay for spring training no pay for the off season so logan salary is just around eight thousand dollars a year not eighty thousand eight thousand six is but that doesn't account for living that doesn't account for shipping your car out that doesn't account for food granted they feed you a couple of meals a day Logan and to some degree all minor leaguers are kind of like living breathing lottery tickets when they pay off and make the majors they pay off huge earn millions and millions of dollars but for the vast majority of minor league players that never happens they toil away in the minor the League's making Bupkus and most do not have a giant signing bonus you see baseball is a winner-take-all career there is a very small chance of making huge amounts of money but more importantly there is a huge chance of making almost no money and as far as logan ice knew those really the only two options but one day a couple of years ago he was at the batting cages practicing and he got this message on Lincoln Lincoln in as like some of those recruiters and stuff that you automated message like yeah like that long do you remember what it said though I could maybe pull it up but see what I got here so he said Hey Logan it's been a minute it's also a small world because I was in the message was from an old baseball friend someone he hadn't seen in a while so there was some small commiserating about a particular minor league assignment Logan and gotten sucks that you got stuck in Mahoning valley last year which that he's one hundred percent right anyways I wanted to reach out because Logan's old friend explained that he was working for this new company that had an idea for how players might be able to deal with this super uncertain take all salary situation his friends message said that this company will quote help baseball players financially by pooling risk and invest listing in each other so logan's reading this and he's thinking this sounds fishy yeah no I I was the first thing I tell them saying hello and welcome to planet money I'm Kenny Malone and I'm Tom Goldman Tom Goldman covers sports for NPR. I should you do and what if this pooling risk thing what if it is a thing what is a completely new way to look at not just baseball but any winter GEICO career today on the show an economic idea that could change the way baseball players and the rest of US think about how we get paid support for NPR comes from Newman's own foundation working to nourish the common good by donating all profits from Newman zone food products to charitable organizations that seek to make the world a better place more information is available at Newman's own foundation dot org should I call you Zach or should I call you Cowabunga or one zero it's much better you wrote on read it that the planet money newsletter is like meaning a noir detective in the parking garage for evidence exchange and incriminating photos can you confirm what's incriminating about the newsletter found some deep dark secret that once did you know how people sign up pure orgy slash planet my newsletter you nailed it all right the company that was sending in messages to try and get in touch with Logan ice is called Pando P. A. N. D. O. and here's a version of the pitch Pando was making to Logan let's actually you're a first round let's make the numbers bigger and more exciting your first round pick as a first round pick you have expected future MLB earnings of forty five million ars grave I'm in I think everyone's excited about the happy about that this is Charlie Olson he's Pandora's co-founder the problem is your odds are like a coin flip you're you're you're outcome is going to be some version of a coin fifty percent of the time you're gonNA average ninety million dollars amazing fifty percent of the time you'll make less than one not amazing not amazing Charlie's point is that even if you're one of the most promising players in the world sure there is a chance you will become one of the richest people in the country there is also a chance your future baseball earnings will be almost nothing you might get injured you might hit up streak of bad luck you might just not be as good as everybody thinks so the companies pitch to players like Logan Ice is this wouldn't it be nice if you and some of your fellow baseball players could somehow share the risk of this brew title winner-take-all career that you've chosen this idea is called an income pool and it's pretty simple like logan just get together with a handful of other players in his shoes so still stuck in the minors still making up kiss and then Logan and these players would make a deal if one of US makes it to the majors and exit big then that person will kick back part of his big money to the rest of us in the pool where baseball can be zero sum when your best friend gets called up and you didn't now of a sudden when your best friend gets called up a little bit of you did panda thinks this income pool idea would work for all kinds of else but the company is just a few years old and starting out with baseball and we spent a ton of time asking Charlie Olson questions about how this would actually work for example is there a level of baseball player that is too low to join pool no there's there's nothing that's too low so what about right now Kenny Malone in studio eligible to be a client of Panos Okay so yes Kenny you have to be in the minor leagues at least but okay so let's just say you and I are interleague irs yes here's how this would work and and we need hundreds of people for our pool it could be as small as just you and me making a deal yeah so then then Tom and I make this agreement and we need to set up the terms of our pool and we could we could set whatever terms we want but there there's a kind of standard contract that baseball players use and to explain it I was GONNA make the big leagues and we're in this pool together here's how this would play out Tom will not have to pay anything until he is earned one point six million dollars playing in the major leagues and once I reached that one point six million level all kick ten percent of the money I make after that back to the pool Pando is gonNA take a ten percent cut of our pool so that's one percent of Tom's additional money essentially that's their business model but but theoretically this is great wait for me like I'm stuck in the minor leagues with my Crappy Minor League salary and it is now subsidized by Tom's giant big league contract and maybe Tom Mix thirty million dollars a year suddenly a millionaire even though I'm in the minor leagues and the contract runs until my career is over or until I paid twenty million dollars into our pool so that's a version of the income pool plan pitched over the phone to our real minor leaguer logan ice shoot now

"All the hurt and the take a cheap shot out of. I think is is. Is mean-spirited as gets because we've been with David bunch, and he's just he's on the front lines here. And there's a lot of pain, and the president doesn't really understand that the comments have congressman Tim Ryan yesterday to the Youngstown media and the Ohio congressman is joining us on the phone from Warren, Ohio. And I what do you think prompted the president to issue that tweet yesterday and specifically to go after you A W local eleven twelve president Dave green. Evidently, Dave was on FOX TV and was talking about the situation and was just I think generally saying that he wished the president General Motors. Everybody would do more. Obviously we lost three ships over there. Head of the union. That should be his position people aren't doing enough because we haven't had it resolved. You know, the president saw him on TV. And then I just took a took a cheap shot. Adam like, he biking normally does it was way out of line. And you know, talk about kicking a guy when he's down. I mean incredible the Lordstown plant had been operating for more than fifty years now that it's shutdown. What is the future for the region? Well, it's a devastating blow. You know? You're talk about we lost the third shift two years ago. We lost this second shift, you know, body year ago, and then we're down to losing the first theft, which means no one's working out there. Thousands of homes hanging in the balance and our community. We're losing in one hospital. I think we lost thirty or forty nurses who are married to people who were out at General Motors and had to move hundreds of already. Out of the community to go. Get General Motors jobs. Elsewhere. And this is kind of the tail end of forty year run from black Monday where we lost Youngstown cheating too in the late seventies. And so, you know, we're we're in a in a tough spot right now. I mean, we've got some cool stuff going on. That's having an impact around new technologies and additive manufacturing. But it it. It pales in comparison to the thousands of good paying middle class jobs at General Motors had so we're we're we're we just took one on the chin. We're getting back up, but we're not going to quit. And we hope we can get a new product in nursing as possible that stem the tide and hopefully turned the corner. In fact, congressman I'm sure you saw the figure Bloomberg news indicating that the Mahoning valley would see a three billion dollar impact by the shutdown of the Lordstown plant. That when I saw that. I mean, it's it's really hard to wrap your head around that would that impact is and again it and it's complicated because we need General Motors to do. Well, because we have so many people drawing a General Motors pension here. We have car dealerships that still sell General Motors and employ people in our part of the community. But the think about three billion dollars and just you know, an area between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. It is devastating to other way to say it, but it speaks to the broader problem we've had in this country for thirty years. We have no industrial policy in the United States to help companies day here to help create new companies and keep them in the United States to grow manufacturing jobs. You need a comprehensive efforts doing China like they do in Germany like doing some of these other European countries. You can't just cut taxes for the top one. Percent and hope the middle class, benefits and hope manufacturing resuscitate itself. It needs a coordinated effort of both a new and better government and doing better capitalistic system. And we're not getting any of that from the White House right now, we're talking with democratic congressman Tim Ryan he is in Warren, Ohio. He represents Ohio's thirteenth congressional district. And as you well know was just ten years ago that President Obama and congress essentially bailing out General Motors with billions of dollars in loans and grants from tax payers. Obviously the bottom line for any company is to make a profit. But is there any hypocrisy with what happened a decade ago in now with GM is dealing with today in terms of your community, and this particular plan as well as three others here in the US? Well, that's the salt in the wound that that the taxpayer came to the rescue of badly mismanaged companies, and and help them, you know, when the chips were down for them. And we thank I think many people in this community think that they have some responsibility that goes beyond prophet. And this again is part of a larger discussion we need to have in this country are these companies just solely about profit. Now, look, I believe in the profit motive, I think it solves a lot of problems. It's the best most innovative of system out there to create a better society. But the reality is we've got a shift from just a shareholder or a Konami into a instead of just a stockholder or shareholder economy into a stakeholder economy. It's about the stakeholders it's about the workers. It's about the community at the Bob the supply chain, it's about the environment and this profit at all costs. Regardless of who gets screwed in the process or who loses their pensioner who loses. Their job is not the right way to go about it. And and we that has not changed in the last ten years since the auto rescue and final point congressman for the Lordstown planned in your congressional district to end, the nearly fifteen hundred hourly workers is there any chance that either GM would return or that another company would take its place. Well, we're in constant contact with General Motors about what we need to do locally or at the federal level with, you know, maybe some funds from the department of energy that can help, you know, transitions on an older manufacturing facility, and it's not quite all that they put a lot of money into it. So it's pretty high tech. But then to a facility that could potentially do things like battery powered cars or electric vehicles, those kinds of things next generation electric vehicles which are projected to go from about two million electric vehicles today to about thirty million electric vehicles in the next ten years. I would like to see General Motors say, hey, this community has been with us. We're going to put our electric vehicle facility in Lordstown or we're gonna put in make batteries for these cars. These new electric vehicle cars that have long life and a long life span as far as how many miles you can get per charge in Lordstown. Something that is in front of a part of the auto sector that's going to grow. That's my hope for working with General Motors to do it. And if they can't do it. They General Motors should help us find some company that can go in that direction. Where the where the wave is rising not crashing when you conveyed that to Mary Barra. The CEO GM, what did she tell you? How did she respond? Well, she seemed us after this was several months ago and we wanted to work with her. We were against what the president was saying as far as getting rid of the tax credits for electric vehicles. I thought that was very shortsighted and punitive again what I heard our retirees whatever. General Motors would hurt the car dealers. So supporting things like that the tax credits and other incentives to help General Motors. Get in front of this electric vehicle tidal wave right now, China dominates forty percent of the electric vehicle market US up twenty percent, we're falling behind and it's going to be harder and harder to catch up. So she's receptive. And I think again. That should be a public private partnership. But let's make sure the investment goes into the communities like ours that have been supportive of General Motors and in need a shot in the arm. So that it's not just certain pockets around the country that do well, but all communities can start doing while again. Congressman Tim Ryan joining us from Warren, Ohio. Thanks very much for being with us here on C span radio. Thanks for having me. On Wall Street. The Dow rose sixty five points, the NASDAQ up nearly twenty six the P also closing higher gaining nearly ten and a half. Meanwhile, the CEO of J P Morgan Chase Jamie diamond saying that the US economy is leaving the poor and unemployed behind speaking in New York City this morning unveiling a three hundred fifty million dollar program by the company to boost job prospects for those in underserved communities. Jamie diamond pointing out to the following that forty percent of Americans make less than fifteen dollars an hour. Forty percent of Americans cannot afford a four hundred dollar Bill whether it's medical or fixing their car fifteen percent of Americans making minimum wage and an estimated seventy thousand will die this year from opioid related deaths. He's talking about Donald Trump real nicely today to those folks in the Mahoning valley, shouldn't they all be really really angry. I mean, how can I I would I would hope that he would say, hey, Donald what are you doing to us wouldn't that? Where what are you supposed to do? Well, there is a guy on there on Sunday evening Morris Ray, who is a liberal. He calls it. The other side of talk radio on a conservative talk station in Youngstown, and he played them. Interesting soundbite yesterday of Donald Trump on his show, and you and it goes something like this where Donald Trump team to Youngstown about a year ago. And he promised going to bring. The jobs. The jobs are going to be coming back. Don't sell your house. I'm gonna make the value of your home's go up. It's coming. It's coming, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. That's a great impersonation. It's that you like doing Alec Baldwin doing Donald Trump. I mean that was like great go ahead. Okay. So. Yeah. So I want to know Mr. and MRs Lordstown Mahoning valley democrat who voted for Trump because you're Maga supporters. What are you gonna do when your quality of life? Is you have no quality of life. You're gonna sit at home and watch box noise because that's all you feel that you can do. Well, I know you're gonna get. Kurt here. Here's my my view of the matter. We've got to just hit him like with the proverbial not an actual with the proverbial two by four right on the bridge of the nose. And it seems to me the way to do that with words now with physical objects. But with words is to say you have been using the wrong measuring stick the question is who pay check. The question is the primary value house, the quality of your kid's education. These are the measuring sticks. The Republicans aren't delivery few. They're taking advantage free of you on that. And the tricky you with these other measuring sticks like these Mexicans and stuff. Why aren't you seeing this wanted to try that approach? What do you think? I do agree in. Why did we elect someone like Mike the weenie, and John Huston and all these other guys, but you know, these same Trumpy Democrats who you wait when hall in pro-life, actually their pro birth. There's no such thing in a pro-life Republican, by the way, if it were there will absolutely. What I was gonna say is the state of Ohio legislature just passed a law, but it has to go to the state Senate, and then go to the governor for signature, which is convenient that it's gonna drag until the wind goes into the governor's mansion. Is it after six weeks of pregnancy abortion will be illegal in Ohio, and they're talking about putting women on death row? Well, they're talking about getting what they really want to do is get the cases premium court. They think now with cavenaugh in Gorsuch up there that they can overturn Roe versus Wade. And so what you'll see not just in Ohio these test cases. And so Kurt don't be surprised if like Arkansas just flat out bands abortion. I mean, these are they're doing intentionally provocative laws that are fleet grizzly, you know, in violation of Roe versus Wade. They're trying to get a rocket ship literally a legal case rocket ship to the supreme court to test. This theory. Do we now have the supreme court ready to overturn Roe versus Wade? They wanted. So there you go not one of those not one of those test cases going to have anything to do with the quality of life of a Lord town VM worker anyone else who is gonna lose their job at Ford or anything else. And you know, and you know, what you're right. It's gotta be power. The picking your pocket. What's your quality of life? Thank God for Sherrod Brown. And you know, what you're here at Brown where to run for president. I don't think I could support it because we need him in the Senate for the state of Ohio. Well, that's another interesting issue. So we'll talk about that current. I gotta tell you then. Now one day, we'll talk about Kamala Harris, and and that's that's the issue. Right. There is do you want her in the center of you want the White House? And and Kamala Harris is one of the thousands of candidates who will be running for president. I don't want to initiate that conversation right now conversation. I do want to initiate right now is with Bonnie in Illinois. Hi, bonnie. Hello. Hi, listen. I was calling because I wanted to discuss the border now, I don't know no one everyone's mentioning the tear gas, and that's terrible thing. But I wanna tell you something there's another smaller story, and I need to preface that with a story about myself was a child, but my sister, we're about eight and six I guess driving with our father. I'll never forget it. The police told him over at for a ticket in the backseat we cried. And we thought he was going to go to jail, and we cried and cried and we got him out of the ticket. And that's kind of a thing that I remember I remember how scared I was now there was a woman who desperately with her two small children, and there were two and four tried to blow the border at some place on the fence and fell into the fence and was injured his all bloody they had to pick her up and take it to the hospital and the police took her children. Now, this is a. Terrible story. Those children are scarred for life. They are. I don't know how they'll ever get past this. I mean, I can still remember I'm sixty six I can still remember crying in the back seat of that car. We were so terrified for our father, and we weren't directly even dealing with the police children are afraid. Sure. Now, we have we have people who are so desperate that they're going to try to do this mall. Children. Obviously, obviously, we need to do something. And I heard early Christian broadcasts we have to do the Christian Christian. Well, chris. Exactly. Yeah. The Chris what look to the good. What did the Lord say? Let us consult the good book. Yeah. Let's consult just Jesus Jesus. Nobody else. My question is this. So I I hear these stories and it's horrifying, and you see the children running with their mothers from the tear gas, and I'm a Christian, you know? And and I I believe Jesus has none of Jesus never addressed homosexuality. Jesus never said love your neighbor, the end that was his deal. So these are our neighbors. These are people that if I saw or you saw a child on the road that needed something you'd help wouldn't matter. What color they were? I mean, that's just how most people are. I heard earlier today that there was a Bill that passed the Senate that had that that they had some DACA stuff in there. And I guess now this could be wrong, I could be wrong. But and that it addressed the fact that we have people up here. The employers are hiring people the employers that don't get prosecuted and are drawing from for a long time. That's been true for a long time. It's been going on since Reagan. I guess and the deal is this. There was a Bill that apparently passed the Senate, but Paul Ryan will bring it to the floor is that true. And if I've not heard anything about that. But I have to turn I've heard zero about that Nike pretty close eye on the news, but Bonnie, I have to tell you as well that when they had a deal couple years ago and actually did pass the Senate Marco Rubio was onboard Lindsey Graham, I it it didn't even come up for consideration in the house. So I don't think they're going to get any immigration reform done in a lame duck session. They're going to try all kinds of stuff. But we'll see Bonnie, I've not heard of it. I will I made a note. I'll go take a look and see if I missed anything, but you're asking for a lot of heavy lifting a very very compressed time. They'll have a few days they want to go to the holidays for their families and stuff. So I I don't see big things happening in congress. However, I see big things happening next with you and me on the phone with Justice is served. The Norman Goldman.
