"Hello. Friends I've his Brown and I'm Casey Rackham welcome to Buzzfeed's news o'clock. As real quick we got the sweetest DM on twitter today after our chat bisexuals yesterday they asked that their name be withheld but they wrote quote for Bi Visibility Day, our family celebrated our son while he's out with us in our family friends that are along the queer spectrum. He's not wide with his out and quite yet little dude is such A. Great Kid and will love him forever. No matter who he brings over for dinner or holiday. God remember having people in your. House. Oh, I love that makes you really happy especially since you know dudes who are bisexual tend to be like kind of shunted to the side and not really ever like thought about so good good parenting there. I really appreciate that. Okay, also a weird segue, but speaking of things that were kind of oppy touching today. So Ruth Ginsburg is lying in state at the Capitol and when paying his respects trainer of twenty years to push in front of her casket in her honor and that doesn't sound like the kind of thing that would make all. But it really it's really sweet. Actually know I did have a wave of feelings because at first sounds like. Oh. That's a little and then I was like you know what? No she you know towards the end of her life specifically with so big on her fitness and staying healthy I mean to the point where you know. Kate. McKinnon has a whole character about it on SNL. So it really is sweet I'm sure they had a wonderful relationship and bond right and it just was a way of showing off relationship and so thumbs up. All right. It is time for today's top stories. Here's what you need to know today. I up immigrant women in is detention are accusing gynecologist a performing procedures on them without their consent Dr Mahindra Amine in Irwin. County Georgia has worked with the ICE detention facility there for years buzzfeed news spoke with four women or lawyers who say Dr mean conducted medical procedures on them without revealing or fully explaining what he planned to do. One of those patients who asked that her real name not be used. So there was only when she was about to be wheeled into surgery that a nurse explained her what was happening she was due to have her uterus grapes and Ovarian cyst removed Dr. Meena told her it would be a simple procedure with no real downtime for Recovery Amanda as she's referred to in the buzzfeed news story was scared by the thought of anesthesia. She asked if she could consult attorney I and was denied if you refuse care she was told. She'd be sent right back to attention and may not get the SYS- treated at all. Now, you might have heard another version of this story that's been circulating one that was based off of a whistleblower complaint but in the almost two weeks since then buzzfeed news integration reporters who are absolutely killer an effing amazing haven't been able to come up with any concrete evidence of mass hysterectomies or a sterilization campaign against immigrants Dr Mean did acknowledge earlier this week though that he would no longer treat patients at the Irwin County detention center. Meanwhile, a recent court ruling in the swing state of Pennsylvania is set to be a massive fucking headache in a little over a month and potentially change the course of the election. So last week Pennsylvania Supreme, court ruled that balance that are mailed in absolutely must have a secrecy envelope concealing how people are voting and in doing. So said that any so called naked ballots received could be tossed out entirely now that's reversal earlier this summer when local officials said that naked ballots should be counted and it's got Democrats extremely worried about how this will affect people who don't follow the instructions. Exactly. Earlier this week, an election official in Philadelphia, sent a letter to the state legislature warning the ruling could result in up to one hundred thousand discarded ballots if voters aren't properly educated as all this is happening something even weirder went down the department. Of Justice said, they're investigating a case in Pennsylvania where military ballots were tossed and that most of them had voted for trump the whole thing was confusing both because DOJ commenting on this was super out of the ordinary and because unclear what ballots were even tossed towards for this one a mess. And finally, the trump administration is saying it wants to give old people free money for prescription drugs just a month out from the election with. Very few details on how would actually be paid for. Trump yesterday announced his long log long awaited healthcare plan to replace Obamacare, it literally does nothing. It does nothing with the executive order. He signed only saying that it is now officially government policy that insurance covers pre existing conditions, which the law already does obamacare already does that, but he also dropped this little tidbit into a speech under my plan thirty, three million Medicare beneficiaries will soon receive a card in the mail containing two hundred dollars that they can use to help pay for prescription drugs. Nobody's seen this before these cards are incredible, the cards will be mailed out. In coming weeks, I will always take care of our wonderful senior citizens the new. York Times reported last week that talked with major pharmaceutical companies to have them lower drug prices had fallen apart. That was at least partially because those companies didn't want to look like they're boosting trump just ahead of the election by sending out one hundred dollar car to help. Pay. For. Prescriptions in a call today with reporters health and Human Services said they hadn't quite worked out where the estimated six point six billion dollars would come from to pay for the scheme. They might use a Medicare trust fund to do so but that's normally for testing small-scale ideas out to see how much they cost, which is not what this is. H. Didn't say how the Hell we plan on getting this money to people had of November, third election. As you just love when trump reveals one of his plans at but he really has no clue how it's GonNa. Happen. And then it probably won't happen. Don't use love that I love and hate it because I we have to treat it like it's real and then we figured out. Okay. Correction I can't figure out what the hell he's talking about. Then we have to treat it like it's real, and then we have to take the time and effort to track down. Why is this not actually a thing now this a could be a thing that could actually get this money out to people but I given how hard that has been for them to actually do especially when they don't know where the funding is coming from. Yet I don't know I don't see out there. You can actually make it happen. Yeah, definitely. Okay. So now we're when we're. Talking about naked ballots do they mean like they won't accept a ballot that's in the sealed envelope they want the ballot with in the secrecy sleep with the envelope yes. So technically, Pennsylvania voters once they ask for an absentee ballot fill get a regular return envelope and a secrecy one. So you put the ballot and the secrecy envelope and that secrecy envelope into the regular one but leave out the secrecy one just like mail it in like regular it doesn't count they. They have permission to throw that vote out. This is truly can be such a shit show. Holy Shit it's going to be so bad everyone fully prepare a imagine imagine beginning how bad you think it's GonNa be and then By one, hundred I mean if you thought I am old enough to vaguely remember Florida in two thousand and them staring at hanging chads and trying to figure out what counts this is going to be that on speed on actual amphetamines. Casey what.

"Mature themes, you will encounter descriptions of sexual violence in today's road. So be warned, this may not be suitable for all audiences. This is something that. Many of you have been hearing in the news lately we've obviously been in a time that has been very challenging for a lot of folks in terms of the treatment of folks that are coming to this country from other countries in some of the rhetoric behind that it's been very strong and some of the physical treatment in the rounding up of children in camps in the notion of like you know images of kids being kept in cages and separated from their families and stuff that just has this just real just nasty dystopia and kind of feel to it and the story we're about today is absolutely just an escalation of that in the worst invasive way one could imagine essentially. And this is all based on a whistle blower complaint and it is under investigation. So I think Ben. You can correct me if I'm wrong here but most of this is still falling under the category of allegedly would you would you agree? So. Let's. Let's get into that a little further and. I don't WanNa over caveat, but I just this is very sensitive stuff. The idea that the Department of Health and Human Services is investigating. Forced sterilizations hysterectomies. Being performed on. Immigrants. In detainment in April Detainment Center in Georgia our our home state the essentially a woman by the name of dawn wooten who's a licensed practical nurse submitted a twenty-seven complaints filed. By project South and the Government Accountability Project earlier this week saying that she had. Heard reports from women in the center where she's working this detainment center saying that there had been a doctor coming around and usually without their permission without consent. Removing their their uteruses, essentially preventing them from ever having children. Right this something that many of our fellow listeners have written in to ask us about whether via social media email or our phone number, and there's There's one email in particular that was very to the point about this. Correct. That's right. It was Diana from Guatemala writing in just to say that she loves the show and was hoping that we consider during an episode on the allegations of ice detention centers forcibly sterilizing women. I I would agree ben that this topic and a lot of the history that's wrapped up in this very triggering brings to mind a lot of historical precedents there will talk about in a bit but I. Think it's possible that this might as we follow this story, see where it leads, it might be worth a larger discussion full episodes but for now I think we can. We can kind of start the conversation here So yeah, that that'd been what we know this. Is what I said there is a nurse who was reporting these these occurrences of women in this detention center being forcibly sterilized having hysterectomies performed on them and. It came from women essentially coming to her and feeling comfortable in saying very matter of factly. Referring to this one particular doctor as the uterus man or something like that like. So there's some very, very dark macab almost tongue in cheek. Kind of nickname they had for this gentleman maybe Benue. You saw that I think I heard that NPR and forgive me if I'm not getting it quite right but. You heard from others. Heard it from multiple people. Yeah. The uterus collector that's right. Thanks Doc the uterus collector is what dismiss gentleman's nickname was ben what do we know about this doctor? Does, we knew several several pieces of confirmed information about this doctor Dr Mahindra. Amine A. M. I n. Dr Amina is the number one person accused by Wooten of conducting these forced nonconsensual hysterectomies a hysterectomy is. In these situations it is a permanent procedure. It's not like vasectomy. You know what I mean. You can't line the tubes allow someone to enter the reproductive population. Once again, that is why this is largely considered when proven an indication of. Of genocide, it qualifies as a war crime. This doctor is not an Obgyn. We know that a spokesperson for the American board of Obstetrics and gynecology told the daily beast that this doctor was not board certified. Being Board certified is typically a voluntary thing. A voluntary certification medical professionals take The doctor did not do it it did not in any way impede this doctor from conducting these alleged again nonconsensual hysterectomies This is really recent news. By the way, we're recording this episode on September Twenty First the. Whistle, blower report came out in September just earlier this month and it's close to hold for the stuff. They want you to know family here because it occurred. Yes, we do have to say allegedly it occurred at the Irwin County. Detention Center in Georgia, which is a private entity. So please check out our earlier work on the problem with privatized prisons. Now, this this doctor who's WHO's received the brunt of these accusations denies it. And his lawyer made a statement saying that he looks forward to all the facts coming out the accusations are going to be fully. Investigated by an independent. However ice itself also disputes any of the implications that the Chinese are being used for, and this is the interesting Somewhat telling. Part of the quote here experimental medical procedures I mean at its heart, they hysterectomy or a this type of vision, really an experimental medical procedure. It's one that's very standard i. think it's interesting. Language has all I'm saying and I do want to. Talk about the history of Government in the United States ordering experimental medical procedures that often affect people who are in minorities or people of Color But Matt you you had mentioned looking up some stats about laws surrounding this kind of thing in various parts of the country. Yes. I. I want to talk about the history and the US of. Laws that would essentially equate to. Sterilization abuse really is what it would be sterilizing someone against their will for a reason that the state has deemed would be appropriate You have to go back to nineteen seven in. INDIANA. When a law was passed there that.

"So, we love our producers on this show because you know they're so brilliant and they come up with themes and so a newer Saudi. Our producer was the theme of this of this week show is that there are no heroines there are no heroes right because there are I mean I insist that there are. That we also are complicated and complex. You obviously saw the media take downs of Ruth Bader GINSBURG. In terms of you know her position on Cavanaugh and other complicated position. Tabernacle exactly Kapernick and just like you're like, Oh shit man like you know I was just an in. In Our Morning I was morning this poor woman home and boom and doing my planks for her and now there's this which also I'm really I need to know this. Yeah. But it leads us to the story of the black nurse Dawn Wooten who works at Irwin County Detention Facility in Georgia So she did end up filing a whistleblower complaint about the gynecologist Mahindra Amine who was allegedly forcibly sterilizing immigrant women without their consent. This is what Don wooten. The nurse said on MSNBC last week tell us about how you heard about this doctor and what women said about their experiences with. You have detained women. I had several women on numerous occasions that would come to me in a Ms Wooten I had hysterectomy. Why I had no answers as to why they had those procedures. and One lady walked up to me here. This last time around between. October nineteen until July the second. And she said, what is he is he the uterus collector? Does he collect uteruses? And I asked what did she mean? And she says everybody that I've talked to has had a hysterectomy. And you just don't know what to say. So shout out to John. Wootton. That don wooden would not have had to have been seen these kinds of horrors over a decade before she spoke out, which is why on this show we are always saying. A whistle blower. Talk to us. speak to us on your voice because as you know I've been reporting about this for over a decade. Yeah absolutely. No I'm horrified. I'm not surprised because I understand that these are torture chambers. I understand that now we understood it for a while. But. The fact that this wasn't kind of stopped the presses, right stop everything shut these places down. You know the fact that we didn't hear Biden saying this is it I'm done with these places all of them are being shut down. By the way we're going to be doing a follow up deep into the history productive rights and immigration detention, etc next week. So stay tuned for that but Erin Yeah. The systematic abuse of black and Brown women. Yeah. And how you you know you exist dow this amazing place the nineteenth. Exist at the same time we're women are having their uterus is taken out without their consent both things happening at same time. Talk me down. I mean. Listen Maria. Context that you referenced them in the long history of the sterilization of marginalized women in this country black and Brown women that is something that you know folks need to be educated about because you know these allegations are not in isolation and the reason that this is so alarming is because we know that this is something that has happened in our country before and the idea that it it would be happening in twenty twenty is cause for alarm and it is certainly news worthy and Should be getting more attention. I did see Vice President Biden, and tweeting about this issue weighing in on this blockbuster story After several days you know I think you know really just the larger conversation around the treatment of migrants under the trump administration in our reaction to that as a society I mean, that may be why the story is not perhaps getting more attention. You know people's reaction to you know folks in cages family being separated, and now the sterilization allegations I, just wonder. I think it is a question for voters in this home stretch is this something that is on the ballot for you. You know these things are. Bright you know on the watch of the American people is that something that is going to motivate galvanize folks to go to the ballot box? I'm not sure it is a good question because you know what as we have said for the Republican Party in the trump administration horror and pain and torture is kind of the Mo. that's the reason why they're doing all of this so. As you were saying that I was like it could motivate them to come out because they're like good to it more bright but it's also like you mentioned Biden's tweet. Aaron. That he tweeted out on Monday morning and you know this is how it started. If this reporting is true. That's how it starts. Okay. So we start with that. This complaint is deeply concerning and needs to be independently investigated. Immediately, these women are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect practices like this would end in a biting administration. There's a history here Andre I'd speaking about when you saw that story in thinking about it critically, what are your thoughts on the country's reacted? Yeah I mean I think that I kind of went to the historical precedent in my mind and it's something that the eighteenth news I think wanted to to also report on that this is not new. In California in the Twenties and thirties and into the forties, Libya's in prisons and mental institutions, and that were part of the welfare system were sterilized into the seventies and native American Women Puerto Rican women. Yes. Up until the seventies people think of this as something that is in our past and as I said, it's happening in two thousand twenty and I think that we should be reminding people of this history I think it's not front of mind for them so I really do. Think that we're in a point right now where we're beginning to consider alternative histories or filling out our histories with the stories of people who previously hadn't been heard before, and so I think that continuing to amplify that history and say, this is not new treatment. This this treatment goes back for a long time and has been normalized in certain institutions and we talk about that and grapple with just the idea that it seems like it's okay to do this to these detained women. The me expand this because I think it speaks to the issue of history political power, and here we are in twenty twenty. And how women of color are going to impact the vote and I, think he is raised very interesting questions about. You know, is it going to motivate people? D-? Are they connecting the dots? I mean honestly, I personally see women as really owning the narrative political spaces. I'm very fortunate to work for a women led organizations flew through the media because I do think that's part of telling the story just like you all are doing it for the nineteenth. So we're seeing all these examples of women of color showing up to vote against racism and to lead in their communities. First, one that comes up to my mind is cory Bush in Missouri, but we still have two white men running for president who granted we do have a black woman as vice presidential candidate, which which is historic. So this notion of women of color still feeling underestimated right? That is still a thing we know that in two thousand sixteen, it was non college educated. White Women who showed up for Donald Trump and pushed into get the electoral vote in two thousand and eighteen however black women and other women of color came out in record numbers turning the house blue voting in a wave of progressive women candidates. So you think right you would think logically, this election year would feel like a toss up between non educated white women voters who continue to pull in favor for trump and women of color who've historically shown up in record numbers. Aaron what's your take women of color impacting this election and do you think? Either candidate is doing a good enough job targeting. This demographic.

"Any assertion or claim to the contrary is false and intentionally misleading is also said, since two thousand, eighteen, two individuals from the facility were referred to doctors for hysterectomies. Now, NBC News, National Security, and justice correspondent Julia Ainsley has been following this story and joins US tonight Julia give us the benefit of your reporting talking to these women directly and trying to reach one of the attorneys in this case. So Brian, what we can tell you is that we have spoken to four attorneys who say that their clients who were in the Irwin County detention center in Georgia were sent to this doctor. His name is Mahindra Amine. That is the doctor that these lawyers each individually identified without us prompting his name we reached out to him and I've deficit. Someone picked up the phone like I'd be making an appointment as soon as I identified myself as a reporter. They hung up I was not able to get through to get a response from him because his lawyers told us that their clients that detainees said that they thought that he was unnecessarily harsh one had a client who reported bruising one had to clients who reported hysterectomies they found out later that they did not need that he told them that they had a cancerous condition that needed to be taken care of the agreed to the hysterectomy only to find out later that was not the case that they did not have to go that far with that procedure. But now here is what Dr Amine told buzzfeed again. NBC. News has not yet talk to this doctor, but he did say that. His lawyer said, the doctor is a highly respected physician who dedicated his adult life to treating the high risk underserved population in rural Georgia, and they believe that this allegations that started with the Whistle Blower Jacob spoke to that they believe that after they investigate allegations that Dr. I mean will be cleared of any wrongdoing and I will say all of these are allegations right now none of this has been presented in a court of Law Don wooten sent that complaint to the Inspector General of D. H. S. They will do their digging. She did not name names she did not even named this. Doctor she did not give dates. It was only from US speaking to lawyers with clients in this facility. Did we learn more of the story we've also learned that this doctor is someone who they send detainees to outside of the facility. He's not actually working in side for ice. One other detail though Brian that I did learn about this doctor is that in two thousand, fifteen, he and other doctors had to settle and pay over five hundred thousand dollars in civil penalties for Medicaid and Medicare fraud with the Justice Department that settlement and twenty, five hundred. So we're learning more but right now he's denying. What a potentially explosive and obviously potentially very hurtful story Julia Ainsley. Thank you.
