Telecom Reseller
A highlight from The long march from telecom to technology, CSG Podcast
"This is Doug Greenan, I'm the publisher of Telecom Reseller, and I'm very pleased to have with us today Haifa Alshkar of CSG. Haifa, thank you for joining me today. Thank you, Doug. It's great to be here. Well, I'm very excited about this topic because it sort of leads on from some of the other podcasts we've been talking about, really a topic for the whole year since MSP Expo at the beginning of the year, telecom companies moving beyond connectivity and into the role of being really a technology company. So we're going to be exploring that idea in just a minute, but Haifa, can you tell us a little bit about CSG? Well, CSG is a company that provides solutions to, really we have three business units. We have our revenue management and monetization business unit, which is wholly focused on the telecom industry. We have a customer experience business unit that focuses on multiple industries, including telecom, and we have a payments business unit. The one that's most relevant today is our telecom focus, our revenue management. We provide solutions and customer experience capabilities to telecom operators around the world. We work with some of the biggest operators, some of the most innovative operators. We probably work with most operators in one form or another, given all of our capabilities. Well, Haifa, let's dive into our topic today, which is this transformation of the telecom company from basically telecom stuff to being really a technology company, a company that comes in and provides technology or technology advice. Give me the big picture on that. Every day, we're always reporting on new technologies. Of course, we have the ongoing story of the AI revolution and also a whole bunch of other things going on, not to mention mobility too. So put that together. What does that mean in terms of, okay, I'm a telecom company, and I'm talking to my customers? So essentially, I think to put all this into context, and it's always dangerous to generalize, but most of the operators are witnessing what we call flat revenues. So revenues are hovering around one to two percent. They need to unlock new top line revenue. And to be honest, to unlock that top line revenue, they're going to have to go beyond connectivity. And while the last decade was focused on connecting consumers through social media platforms, this next decade on the back of 5G is all about connecting the ecosystems of businesses. So bringing businesses together more efficiently, more effectively. The operators are in a unique position where they have a relationship with many businesses out there. Now, part of the reason we talk about operators going beyond connectivity is to unlock new revenue. And they honestly, this whole discussion around telco to techco is mostly about becoming a platform business. And there are three lenses on that. So the first lens is one of their biggest assets is their network opening up their network to third parties, to developers to come in and leverage that network and build and innovate new capabilities. So that's one lens. The second lens is in this kind of digital dynamic era, operators need to be able to pivot fast. If you've heard some of the operators talk about their techco transition and journey, a lot of it is about being able to react, knowing that they won't know what the killer use case is going to be. They need to be able to react fast. But the third and the most important lens is about bringing technology together as turnkey solutions back to their business customers. Now, business customers today spend a lot of money. I think they spend about four and a half trillion dollars globally around the world on IT and communications. Only a third of that spend is spent on communication services. And actually the biggest growth is going to come from enterprise services and IT services and solutions. So it makes sense for operators to unlock new revenue is to look at how they can bring technology, not just internally and make themselves dynamic, but also bring it to their customers who might not have the same big R &D spend, the same big opportunity to play around with technology and are looking for solutions that will deliver business outcome. So the operators have a unique opportunity here to really drive top line revenue, but also bring together these ecosystems of third parties into solutions to offer their own customers. So I wanted to sort of pull out something you said in what you're discussing there. It struck me that you talked about how social media has become now the method of connectivity. That's how people are connected with each other and how businesses are increasingly connected with their consumers. I'll go even further. I think it's true to say, especially in some countries, social media has become actually the marketplace. It absolutely is the primary way businesses are engaging with their audiences, with their customers, with their users, and particularly given the new generation are so tech savvy, you can understand how that makes a lot of sense. I think the distinction I would draw is that essentially social media, the last decade was spent moving into YouTube and Facebook platforms and Instagrams, and we call it the SMAC, Social Mobile Analytical Cloud era, for that reason. It was around bringing all that technology and what we saw in the consumer industry was over the top players, new players, new innovations come in, and to some degree that caused disruption for the telecom operators. In this next era, when now revenues and consumer are reasonably flat, essentially if you want to grow revenue and consumer, you're taking business from someone else. There's no real white space. A lot of the focus has shifted to B2B and working in the business space for that reason. If we think about the last era as B2C and connecting consumers through social media, I like to talk about this decade, the 2020 to 2030, as the era of connecting businesses through ecosystems, collaboration, co -creating, bringing together beyond connectivity solutions. Let's talk about how that actually looks like. Let me sort of maybe draw on a couple of theoretical things that sort of look like a lot of our readers, I think. Let's say I'm a represented company in rural America. We have maybe 30, 40, 50 ,000 subscribers still buying basically landlines and maybe possibly some mobility services. But to your point, social media is now actually the marketplace. It's increasingly how businesses are talking to each other, people are talking to each other, and so on. So what do I do? How can I connect what you're calling ecosystems, business ecosystems, to what I'm selling as far as services go? Essentially, you think about those rural operators and businesses. Their customers are still consumers. In order for them to engage their customers, they need to think about how their customers are engaging through digital channels, these omni -channel experiences that we constantly talk about, shopping cart experiences. In order to provide this kind of digital engagement with their consumers, they need to digitise their businesses. So the enterprises who are dealing with these consumers, the manufacturing companies, the retailers, the farmers who are engaging, need to be able to digitise their business models. And so the opportunity now is for operators to bring digital solutions, because as an operator, if you think you're going to go and acquire every single technology out there to put together a solution, those days are long gone. And this is why today we talk about ecosystems and collaboration and co -creation, being able to attract the right sort of partners who can bring together that rich tapestry of solutions and who can create a platform back to these businesses, whether it's through contact centres and chatbots, whether it's using AI to provide next best decisioning, whether it's using AR to help with the way they provide remote support to their customers. So bringing technology, communication and turning it into a solution is really the opportunity here to help the businesses engage with their end customers. Now, all year long, we've been talking about AI. So for generative AI, where is the potential for telecom companies? Look, the potential for telecom companies in Gen AI really sits in multiple places. And I like to talk about this because I think any company who's looking at Gen AI is thinking about it from the same lens. The first lens is always how can I use Gen AI to make my internal operations more efficient, more productive and be able to do the less mundane stuff more quickly so that I can use my power to focus on innovation. And so that's typically where a lot of companies are starting. And for operators, using a Gen AI network is probably top of mind. This is where their big cap expense is. They've spent a lot of money turning a lot of that copper into more software -defined networks with fibre. And so using Gen AI to do intent -based networking, to do self -healing is of the obvious place. But the next obvious place is using it in their contact centre, using it in the way they engage with customers. And so that's really the two big areas where Gen AI helps operators. Because if you think about that contact centre, using Gen AI to help guide, to help highlight, showcase during an interaction, that's the power of Gen AI. And this may have really exploded this year, but I can tell you, many telecom operators have been leveraging and using AI and forms of generative AI for the last few years already. So Haifa, you know, with this transformation underway and also with a lot of very interesting opportunities to move out of that flatline growth you were mentioning earlier, how are you guys walking your clients through this? So at CSG, we understand right now, as I said earlier, to unlock new revenue, you're really talking about creating ecosystems with businesses, collaborating, co -creating. And we talk a lot about B2B2X. Now, B2B2X basically essentially has multiple lenses, because at the end of the day, the operator can be any B in that B2B2X. When they are essentially the first B, they are literally basically bringing together solutions from third parties, offering them to their business customers who are offering them to their own customers. That's one version of the B2B2X. The second version of the B2B2X is where the operator is the second B. The operator is engaging with third parties to service their own customers directly. So IoT solutions would be a classic example where they would bring together an IoT solution with their connectivity and offer it to their customer base. Now, the third lens is basically opening up their own network to businesses to be able to take connectivity and sell it to their customers. A classic example would be a car company, so General Motors coming to one of the big carriers, using connectivity, putting it in their cars, but owning the end relationship with the customer. So there are multiple lenses on how ecosystems and relationships and co -creations will happen. We at CSG are anchored in this B2B space. Now, you'll hear a lot of vendors talk about B2B and B2B2X. What essentially makes us unique is that we recognize this space is complex. It's rich. We're talking multi -party relationships. We're talking multi -component solutions. We're talking distributed 5G architectures. So anyone who comes in and says to you, I can make B2B simple for you, means that they've lost all that richness that it requires to be able to service it correctly. When we talk about B2B, we talk about making complex easy. So keeping the richness, but making it all look, feel, and engage easy and seamlessly and creating that dynamic orchestration, creating that dynamic experience from the minute you engage with your customer to the minute you fulfill to the minute you monetize all the way through that transaction, making it easy. The way I like to talk about complex made easy, not simple, is I usually use a really interesting analogy, which is a sporting one. Most people probably know who Magic Johnson is. He played 13 NBA's. He's regarded as one of the greatest point guards of all time. They talk about his ability to be an assist machine. So essentially, he can, without even looking, make a pass that creates the next goal or the next set of points. What's interesting about it is he makes it all look so easy. But we all know it's not about peripheral vision. We know it's about, essentially, his core awareness. We know that it's the presence of mind. We know it's that deep knowledge of the players and where they're likely to be that allows him to do that. So what makes us unique in this whole space and the way we're able to make complex easy is that we understand B2B extremely well. Our solutions were born in this space. The pedigree we have, the proof points we have is what gives us that richness and then bring it together with the new technologies, the platforms that we've built that are standardized, that are open, is what allows all that dynamic interaction. So we see B2B2X as very, very important. We understand the three lenses, and it's really about orchestrating, and that is what we help them do, but we help them do it in a very easy manner. Well, Haifa, I really want to thank you for joining us today and giving us a really fresh take on, as you said, it is a discussion that's been going on for a while, but it's now more than ever. Revenues are flatlining, and I think people are looking for new opportunities and new visions as we close out this year and enter a new year. Maybe for the new decades. So this has been a really interesting experience. I hope we get to do this again. I think we will. But for now, where can we learn more about CSG? Look, essentially, like anywhere, you can go to our website and you can engage with us that way. We do attend most of the industry forums, so we're more than happy to meet up at an industry forum. Or essentially, if you do go through our website, just reach out and make contact, and we'll make sure the right people in the right location connect back because we are a global company. Well, Haifa, as I said, I'm very sure we'll do this again soon. I would like to see an update on these ideas, but for now, thank you very much for joining us today. Thank you, Doug.

"A group led by Josh Harris has agreed to buy the NFL's Washington commanders from longtime owner Dan Snyder and his family. The sides announced the deal in a joint statement Friday, roughly a month after they reached an agreement in principle on the sale for a record $6.05 billion. The deal is the highest price paid for a North American professional sports franchise. It is still pending approval of three quarters of owners and other customary closing conditions. Harris's group includes Washington area billionaire Mitchell rails and basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, Snyder has owned the team since 1999. I'm geffen cool bar.

And when you're close to that special someone, you could just put this on and let him take care of the rest. I still ordered some fear. And the pan flute never got some fear in the pan. Why do you see payments? Did you ever order the Columbia albums where for $1? You could order these albums. Next thing you know, you were getting a bill for, you know, a couple of $100. Trying to explain that to your mom. I don't even know who was singing that song. Do you know who this is, Marv? Paul Davis, and I just found that out. All right. I think I need to see if I could get somebody to write me a song. Where I don't have to raise my voice too high, where I just keep it down in here. Maybe I could do a cover. I've already done the song by war. Low rider. That one's in my Wheelhouse. And I get to play the trumpet as well. Yes. Or do you think I'm

"Did you did you have to hate Michael Jordan as well that you said you had to hate Larry Bird? I didn't get a chance to hate Michael because of the fact that we play one time, I think because of the relationship with Larry happened in college in terms of us in the industry, Michigan state. Then it carried over to two most story franchises in NBA history. The Celtics and the Lakers and we played so many times, that's why I think we hated each other and disliked each other in terms of the selfish Lake of Larry and I. Michael, I think the dislike might have came more of the bulls and Celtics, right? Because in Eastern Conference and they play so many times. But we only really that one time in 91 when they won when they beat us. And so I didn't have a chance to hate Michael, but we're good friends and I love MJ and what he stands for, what he's built not only on the court, but off the court, his business, so it's great. Can LeBron surpass Michael in your eyes? I don't know. I don't know. It might take a couple more championships to do that. LeBron is special and I don't want people always get mad over, you know, we had to celebrate both guys. I mean, Michael is the best and we should celebrate him and we should celebrate LeBron. And so I hate when people get mad at you if you take one or the other and we should just say, hey, Michael, special. And I always say he's special because and he's the best to me because he never lost in the NBA Finals. And he's averaged over 37 points a game. The guy is just unbelievable. And so but LeBron is special too in his own right too. And people shouldn't forget that either, but when it all said, if you come at me and you ask me, that's who I'm gonna go with MJ. Magic. Thank you and good luck with the campaign. Great to talk to you again. You too, Dan. Take care of yourself, brother. "I don't think we understood Dan until after when they told us it was it had been and still is the number one watch a game in college basketball history. We knew it was special because they were undefeated. And he was college basketball player of the year and I was running up to that, right? I think it was the first time that the two best players met for the national championship. But when did you realize you two were alike? Oh, I mean, listen, I knew that in college. And then when we got into the pros, it just really put the stamp of approval on that the fact that we were so much alike. And then when we shot a commercial, in the early beginning, we hated each other. We had to because he ended up on the cell design end up on the Lakers. And so you knew that there was going to be. Hatreds there because the cell to have beat the Lakers what I think 7 straight times, I believe. And so and then we met and then they beat us in 84, so we had to I had to hate him. I had to hate the Celtics. And then when we shot that commercial, I believe in the 87 at his house in French lick Indiana, that's when we became friends. And that's when we finally said, you know what we're more alike than we are different because we're both Midwest boys with close to our family. We also changed the game of basketball together, whether that was in college or the NBA. And then we always were about making our teammates better, right? We read the past and shoot a lot of times. And so two big guys that can handle the basketball that would do anything to win. And so I just, I love Larry Bird. That's my man. And so I think the thing that is special then was that he made me better and I made him better. And so and that's why I think that even when I think about what's happening right now, this campaign is happening over March Madness, right? The Coke zero zero sugar is going on March Madness. It's going to be amazing. Dave and Travis are too cool guys who we shot this commercial for Coke zero sugar in a bodega and what are we talking about, right? Who's the best ever? Just like you and I just talk about Larry and myself and what team was the best and was Kareem the best. We had that same debate in this commercial and then I show up when Dave and Travers are having that debate. I show up and really grab the Coke zero sugar and walk out and it's amazing commercial I'm happy that I'm doing it. And I'm happy that it's Aaron doing March Madness too. Yeah, it's going to air for the first time during duke and North Carolina. Dave bird and Travis Bennett, tamika catchings. We're talking to Magic Johnson. "Magic Johnson, joining us on the program. When was the last time you played pickup basketball? Oh my goodness, Dan, it's been a lot of years, man. I probably, 7, 8, 9, ten years. But do you miss, do you shoot around at all? Yeah. Yeah, I shoot around, but I don't play pickup anymore. The fun comes when the great thing is, the gym that I work out every morning at has a full court basketball court. So I'm able to go in and shoot because I work out so early, so a lot of people are not there. So that works out because I love to shoot. Matter of fact, you know, some days I just go in and shoot for like a half hour, 45 minutes. But I wondered how you would be given everybody has to shoot the three or ones to shoot the three now. How do you think your game would be in the modern era or today? Oh, wouldn't change any because what I do, what I specialize in is still as needed in the game today. That's coming down on that fast break and passing it to people and putting them in position to score. So now instead of shooting passing it to the guys that they can do the slam dunk over the layup, I'll be passing for them to shoot the three point shot. So and then you have to remember centers are not centers. So when I play, you had at least two 7 footers almost on the court. Now you don't have that. So, man, I'll be driving that to that back. And I won't have no resistance in today's game, right? But what do you think you could have averaged? If you wanted to. If I was just an offensive minded guy? Yeah, let's say you were you had the green light like Jordan did. Oh, yeah. Well, I probably wouldn't have as much as him, but I could have averaged 28, 29, 30 points a game. That was easy. I did that my whole career in high school. I could have did that at Michigan state too, but it's not about that for me. What it was about was I wanted to win. So when I saw that we had scores like Jamal and Kareem and norm, when I got to the Lakers, I just said, hey, I want to win. So I just said, whatever I need to score to help us win, that's what I'm going to do. And so when Pat Riley finally gave me the green light when Kareem had got older, my year is now managing 24, 25 points a game. I could have did that when I walked in. And so, but it's about winning. I didn't care about that. And even today, I still don't care. I just want to win. I want to win. So I've always been like that and I will always be like that. Is it possible Kareem is underrated?

"I just wanted to revisit that pesky faster than the speeding bullet play that fritzi was bringing up earlier. And I didn't have the NFL was also going to frown upon flying up near the goalpost to block the kicks or using actually vision in the huddles. Okay. All valid points. Rick taking a shot at you, fritzi. Fritzi wanted to know if they would outlaw somebody on the kicking team if they were kicking a field goal and they were able to run down during the kick and then knock it over the goalpost if it wasn't going to make it. I got a tweet, what about someone climbing on someone's shoulders if the ball is being too far? Can't do that. Faster than a speeding bullet. That's the new play. No. Taking a shot at you. And once again, fritzi graduated second in his class of 600 in high school. How this goes to show that happened. There's a big difference between book smarts and streets. Yeah, I know. You're right. Michael and Fort Wayne, hi Mike, what's on your mind today? Hey, good morning, Dan. Thanks for taking my call. Shout out to penny, my dogs love the bang biscuits. Oh, great. One question. Yeah. "Purposes of discussion. The warriors were, I think, the number two defense in the NBA this season, and mine Boston. And draymond green was going to be defensive player of the year after the first like two, two and a half months before he got hurt. Draymond green is still an awesome, awesome defensive player. And as you noted, he has done almost everything to bottle up jokic, you know, there's some Kavanaugh Looney in there as well. There's team defense in there. There's a lot of things in there. The warriors are great defensive team. When they're at full strength and they're pretty close to full strength right now, and the only opening that I thought the nuggets, I didn't think this was going to be a close series. I thought the only opening the nuggets had given it that they are down in Jamal Murray and Michael Porter junior was that Steph Curry, his health was up in the air. As soon as Steph Curry was cleared to play, even with a minister restriction coming off the bench, okay. Your window just got slammed shut. Denver, I'm sorry. But if anything, this is a case where everybody kind of, I think, slept on the warriors. They underestimated the warriors. And I said this before the postseason started. If the warriors are at full strength, I absolutely believe they can win the west that they can knock off Phoenix and return to the finals. And we're seeing that right now. You know, it's going to be popular to pig pile on jokic if they get broom out of this series, but I'm watching that game last night and I'm wondering, where's the help for jokic? Where is teammates? Where are the guys that made shots during the regular season? Aaron Gordon combined in this series is 6 for 19. He is one for 7 from three point range. He has been a non factor on both ends in this series. This is the guy that in the absence of Murray and Porter junior, they kind of count on in Denver to be a top option for that team. And he just hasn't shown up in this series. So, you know, jokic, one thing about jokic two, I'll say this. I don't know what's happened to his three point shot, but it's gone right now. I mean, it's gone. You look at the last few months and I was looking at this watching him just whiff on three points after three. He's zero for 7, I think, from three in this series. 43% of his threes in January. That was a high watermark. Made 31% in February. 23% in March, 15% in April and has not made one in this series so far. That three point shot is broken Howard. So every time he steps out there and jacks up a three, I know it looks cool because it's a high arcing shot and maybe every so often it's gonna go in, but that's a win if you're Denver. He's gonna shoot threes over draymond green. You take that if you're Golden State. You take that as a victory. That's not gonna win you a series if you do. It's not gonna win you a game. If you Denver, you need yogic to play in the paint, get layups, be physical, get green to foul trouble, pass out of the post when they send double teams at you. You've gotta win that way. Shooting threes, especially when you're jump shots broken. That's not gonna get it done. Yeah, interesting too, just to look at his assists. He's got ten assists over two games. I mean, this is a guy who ever just 7 8 assists per game in his career part of why he's been an MVP once before and might be again is because he does such a great job at being the offensive fulcrum for that team and getting shots for teammates and they got to make those shots of course for him to get those assists that he is got only ten through two games. It was an indicator that his teammates are not there to help him out right now. I don't know if that's just playoff tightness. I don't know if that's, again, the warriors are a great defensive team. But yeah, jokic, his value, his, and the reason again that he's been an MVP and could be again is because he's not just a dominant scorer. He's a great playmaker. He makes his teammates better and right now that that entire ecosystem for the nuggets is just freeing before our eyes. Yeah, yeah, well, we'll see what happens when we head back to Denver. Maybe they can rediscover what they had there. So all right, Howard, good stuff, I'm sure we'll discuss how people hate our ballots for coach of the year next week when we're not doing this pot. Always a pleasure my friend. When we come back, my conversation with Magic Johnson. American corn farmers, a proud and chosen profession inspired through generations. It's the NBA player. We set the clock. 82 games later and we're back to a blank slate. We've got over 7 decades of history behind us. Legendary status in front of us and each win is a step towards greatness. Here take 48 minutes to show out in a couple seconds to send them packing until only one team is left standing. It's gone. There's been a lot written about you, there have been documentaries about you, what more will people learn about magic in this one? Well, I think it's coming from my, from my voice, from my own words, from the people, not only from me, but also the people who lived through these moments as well. You know, not somebody's opinion of me or somebody's opinion on what happened, now you get the real Lakers talking about showtime, you know, careen, Cooper, Byron Scott, Jamal Wilkes, norm Nixon, Jerry West, coach Riley, the real Lakers, Jeannie buss talking about her father and what it meant Paula Abdul. So about the Laker girls on and on and on. And so that's very important. And then my journey from all the way from high school all the way to the NBA and to now as a CEO, that's never been told before. My journey through life, the ups and downs. So we got a lot of ups, you know, high moments, and they're just some low moments. So I think that just walking everybody through the journey, how I reinvented myself, I always been an amazing run, but also how, you know, it's been some difficult times too. So you're telling me the HBO show is not an accurate depiction of the showtime Lakers. I haven't seen it, but of course I know it's not because nobody was. Nobody seems to think so. No, there's.

The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix

"Of the year. And that's why he wanted this year. Two things drive me crazy in the awards discussions. One is the absolutism that some people apply where it's like they've decided on this player is objectively absolutely positively indisputably provably the defensive player of the year or provably the MVP. And here's my numbers, it's usually numbers to back it up. If you are speaking with that level of absolutism, you've probably already lost me, especially if you're also doing it in the most condescending way possible. And if you're dismissing the collective opinion of a hundred NBA media members who were the voters, like, okay, you can say we got it wrong. You can say that you disagree with the outcome. You can make your case. But to do it as condescendingly as some people feel compelled to do every year around this time is obnoxious because people put a lot of thought into this a lot of effort into this. I know you and I certainly do. I know that, by the way, with regard to Marcus smart, the last two weeks of the season, I was pulling everybody, I saw scouts, GM's assistant GMs, coaches, whoever, hey, by the way. Same. You know why? You're why I do? Because one, defensive numbers, no matter how far we've come in the analytics era, defensive numbers are not enough. They don't tell you the whole story. A lot of them aren't that accurate. They're being abused. And so it's not some objective. Exercise here where you just punch the numbers in and you get the guy. And the opinion of everybody I spoke to this season and you alluded to it, Chris was it's not Rudy Gobert's best year. He's still one of the better defenders in the NBA, but it's not a defensive player of the year kind of year for him. The jazz, I think we're only tenth in defensive efficiency when he has won it. They've usually been like top three top 5. And Marcus smart was absolutely essential. And by the way, open ended question that I was asking people because defensive player of the year is the hardest to do because it does have the least amount of good data to draw on and requires the most amount of observation. So the advanced scouts and others who are paid to study this have a better view of it than just about anybody, I got bark as smart as an answer more often than not. And that influenced my vote tremendously. I got a lot of people advocating for him, some advocating for Yanis. And you know, you're getting multiple names from people too. So they'll say, well, you know what? I think Marcus smart had the best year, but I think Giannis deserves some run. I think Jaron Jackson junior deserves some run. And then they'll break it down as to why. But you can't just throw out the defensive metrics, which are far from reliable, I would say. And just say that obviously Gobert is still the guy and obviously Marcus smart is just some fiction created by, I don't even know, I don't even know by who. And yeah, that part's really insulting. Who are we all so easily influenced by? 'cause there was no real campaign to speak of. I mean, there was like, look, Marcus was very vocal. And like he was also but guys advocate for themselves all the time. Of course. And Rudy Gobert was on ESPN, doing the same thing. They all did during the whole time frame. Like the PR campaigns. But you want to have a beef with somebody like have a beef with whoever voted like Al Horford number two in that ballot. Like I love aloe orford, but he's not number two on a defensive player of the year ballot, but he's time will go to third place vote. I wasn't going to go. I wasn't going to go there. I wasn't going to bring up the Al Horford second place vote, but you did. I will all just say, and this is not even to anybody. This is all of us in the media collectively. I know we all have like space to fill and everything, but like the annual routine where we ask the coach if their player should be defensive player of the year or 6 man of the year or then we ask the guy himself and his teammate. Of course they're gonna say yes, I mean, I get it. There's air time to fill and newspaper columns to fill and everything else, but like it's kind of a silly routine we're in where we are every year having the guys themselves and their teammates and coaches tell us why they're the best at what they do. I agree. All right, let's move on before we get to both get too heated over this. American corn farmers. A proud and chosen profession inspired through generations. Tested, resilient, and committed to giving back as much as they're growing, pushing the boundaries of what's possible with every bushel. While replenishing every increasingly precious resource, like the reduction of soil loss by 40% with every acre grown in a world where sustainability matters more than ever, we need all the help we can get, and there's no greater resource than the capable hands of American corn farmers. With Boston, Celtics against the nets on Sunday by far the best game in the first few in the playoffs. The Celtics win with an incredible buzzer beater by Jayson Tatum. I thought Howard that was there for that game. That the two sequences that led to the Celtics win represented I thought the best of Boston at that moment because defensively down one, they got to stop by bottling up both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Irving dribbled around a bunch. He got double teamed. He wasted a lot of time. He finally kicks the ball to Durant, and there's Jayson Tatum, who has had a phenomenal defensive season of his own. You know, locking up Durant forcing that deep three point attempt that went awry. And then everything went to the offensive possession. Was great. It was great that email DOCA, a first time playoff coach, did not call a timeout. I would argue Howard, most first time playoff coaches would have called time out there. They would have wanted to regroup, set up a play, yada yada, eme saw the advantage that the Celtics had by getting the nets out in transition and said, go ahead, go play, I trust you guys. You had jaylen Brown, not forcing a shot when he drove baseline. You had Marcus smart. Not taking an open three pointer. I can't begin to tell you. Like, how many times out of a hundred? 99 times out of a hundred in the last few years. Marcus smart would have taken that shot. He was four for 9 from three point range. Going into that moment. He pumped fake, though, got two defenders to bite on it. Drove and then smartly found Jayson Tatum for that lab. Great shot by Tatum, but I thought smart made the play of the possession by not taking the shot and then finding a moving Tatum going to the basket. Marcus smart, who has proven me wrong, every step of the way this season. I would have been more wrong about Marcus smart than I've been about any player or any situation in the NBA this year. I didn't believe you could be a lead point guard. He has been a high level guy. I didn't believe he could stop becoming a volume shooter. He has done that. He's kept his assist numbers up. His turnovers have been okay, and he has been exactly what the Celtics needed as a floor general. They just got everything right on that final offensive possession and salvaged what would have been probably a devastating loss for.

"A little more here. So Fisher also mentions that a Westbrook for John wall trade could be another option once again, this summer. Again, I don't know if that's the path they're going to go, but he also mentioned that Malik monk the likely be priced out of the market for him because monk is according to personnel polled by bleacher report monk is expected to get somewhere between 5 and 10 million, which is going to be more than what the Lakers could offer with a taxpayer mid level. Well, 5 million isn't, but 10 million would be the upper end of what would be more than what the Lakers could offer. Yeah, I've been saying all along that he's going to get somewhere some either a chunk, if not the entire non taxpayer MLE from somebody. Just his shooting. He's very plug and play on just about any team in the league and good teams. What will happen is some team will go through their playoff run, and we'll realize, man, we were a shooter short, and then they'll prioritize a guy like monk with their MLE, and then they'll go get them. And then that'll easily trying to replace him with whatever they need to do. Right. Yep. Exactly. Let me go back to you on the west birthday. Westward for wall. We've discussed that at a bunch. You have to hope if you're the Lakers that your path with Russell Westbrook and we're going to talk to us probably a lot more as we get into the off season stuff. Is some team sees, hey, we can make it work. We can get second half of the season wizards Westbrook back. We can do this. We'll build them up. We'll put all the right guys around it. Make a rough centered offense, blah, blah, blah. If you have the Lakers, you're hoping just strictly because of the salary involved, you can get two, three, four players. Because then that makes everything a little bit easier as far as building out the rest of your roster. Even if they're not two, three, four, great players. As long as they're guys who can capably play rotation minutes, you're going to be way ahead of the game on that. So I would much much rather go that path than trying to go, I mean, John wall, by that point, well, it will be been a year and a half. Since we've seen him play. I have no reason to believe that it's going to be much better than what it was with Westbrook. For John Wallace, that he still has it. But yeah, but that's my guess. So they're hoping somebody falls apart here in the playoffs and says, man, you know, this is broken. We need to do this or maybe you're looking at the jazz and saying, hey, you're ready to blow it up. You want to get off my Conley's deal and Bogdanovich's deal and Rudy Ye's deal. All right, let's go. We'll take down man, yo, and you can reset in a year around Gobert Mitchell and nothing else on your books. Maybe something like that is where they're planning to go. And then they bring in those guys and anything like that would be better than just go get one more big salary guy. It's just not the right path. Agreed. 100%, 100%. Yep, that's exactly what I expect the Lakers to look to do. Try to absorb some salary that goes into future years, in exchange for Russ's expiring contract and then off you go. Who those salaries are? Have a feeling we're going to be talking about that quite a bit. This is. All right, finish things out. We had a few signings, Luca build those to the bucks..

"Don't think it's going to happen. Either it also would require the sixers to kind of flame out this year. And then we already saw Mike D'antoni connected to the 76ers trying to do a reunion there with Maury and harden. I don't know, but that's the other names connected to the Lakers where Mike Brown, who's a former Lakers head coach and then Steve Clifford, but also here's the, this is the bit that really gets under Lakers fans skin. I'm just going to, I'm just going to read the line here. It's widely believed that Los Angeles, as has been the franchise's custom, will prioritize coaching candidates with past connections to the organization. Yeah, that's not. They do this. They limit their own talent pool by only looking at people that are within their family tree. Yeah, and I don't like it. I mean, as much as the Vogel thing has gone sideways now, he won you a championship, and he was not connected to the franchise. I think Steve Clifford is a fantastic coach. I don't know about this version of the Lakers for him. Yeah. I feel like he's almost too close to Vogel. It's also odd like he followed Vogel in Orlando. That's true. How are you going to have him follow in LA? I have to believe that they would be pushing. For or not pushing, but hoping for Quinn Snyder to pop free and get him. Because I think quin Snyder has the combination of, I think, to be a successful coach in LA, you have to have some star level to you as a coach. And I think he's got that. I also think he has the gravitas with the players because of his experience as a high level player on the college level. He's been around the game forever. He's a guy all these guys know Andy said the jazz, very good for a long time. I think he would come in immediately with a, hey, let's go and they could really hit the ground running. So that would be my guess is that's probably option one a for them. Or option one star, everything, whatever you want to call it of. This is option one, but it's way above option too. We really want them there. So let's see. And we're close. In terms of Hollywood, physically, Quinn Snyder looks like he could be the baby. It looks like he could be a villain in a movie. Like that, he just got that look. It wouldn't surprise me if I know he's not acting anymore now, unfortunately, for Bruce Willis, but he looked like he could be the bad guy on a Die Hard movie. I could see it. Yeah. I could see it. Yeah, for sure. You could have seen him on. Yeah, any number of things. He's got to get rid of whatever this double is that's going on right now. Because that's not working, but yeah, get him back clean shaven with the slick back hair. Yeah, let's go. Yeah. So all right, I know we get a little bit..

I think the shots at the Lakers, the Lakers organization, they're just beginning because we're going to get a lot more of this as we get deeper and deeper into the off season. And here I am looking at this as though we're already in the off season technically no. But we still, we still have basketball games left to play somehow, Matt. We do. And before we get off here, I do want to mention that Magic Johnson does have a docuseries coming up. So maybe the timing of these comments are pretty targeted. And intentional. That is something that I had not thought of, but it's a good point. It's a good point. Sorry. Maybe he's just excellent at timing. And it's just, you know, hey, look, I got a docuseries coming up later this month. I should check it out. But before then, let me go flame my old team for a little bit. Let me go, let me go say all the things. And get some attention and then that'll help me out. Yeah. PR one O one, Trevor. That's right. That's right. So what do you think? What's the solution here? For the Lakers, heading it like how are they going to be able to deal with all of this? Like there's going to be a lot of negativity coming out about the team. I mean, is there anything they can do? Just keep their head down and just keep moving forward and start preparing for next season because I think the negative cloud surrounding this team is going to be it's going to be pretty thick. Yeah, I think it almost has shades of the 2019 off season, right before the AD trade. LeBron edge just got hurt Lakers missed the playoffs. No, everyone was piling on. It kind of feels like that. So I think the best course of act. I mean, that's all you really can do, right? I mean, we're going to get finger pointing. Each side is going to want to tell their story and get the narrative out there. But I think once the summer rolls around June or so, when everyone's focused on the playoffs, I think the Lakers are just going to have to hit the drawing board and figure out a way to dig themselves out of this. And then selfishly, I hope they just hire people like me and you to work for them. Turn the season around. We're so good at this, right? Because everyone thinks we work for the team already. You want to make you want us to be well, first of all, if we did work directly for the team, we wouldn't be able to talk about like 80% of the things that we talk about. Because it would be awful. And we'd be falling under tampering rules. There's a good sign right there. But what do you think? We could be the GM duo. We could bring your optimism to the front office. I think we could fix this thing. When you turn it around. We can. We absolutely can. I've been watching a lot of winning time on HBO. Maybe that's why I think I can come here and do a job. Sorry, we're not sponsored by any of these series or anything guys, but I just wanted to point it out. Who knows, Trevor? Maybe we're the ingredients that are missing out of that front office. That's what it is. I'm convinced. That's what it is. Just need a little bit of Lakers nation there. And we can turn this thing right around. Oh, it's a thought. It's going to be a long off season. The Lakers are going to be very, very busy. There's going to be a lot to do. There's going to be a lot of negativity. There's going to be a lot of negative publicity going on about them. That's going to be something to watch, then we're going to have the draft. We're going to have a lot of moves. I think made in free agency. As they tear this thing down and try to figure out what the team is going to look like next season. I think it's going to look very, very different than the one right now. But Lakers nation, give me your thoughts in the comments section, whether you're over on Apple podcasts, put in the reviews, or if you are on YouTube in the comment section below, let us know your thoughts on what Magic Johnson said. And the Lakers ultimately going with Russell Westbrook instead of demar Derozan and then as I mentioned, opted to not trigger a hard cap and then essentially hard kept themselves by not signing Alex Caruso after that. Ouch. It's been a rough time. Appreciate everybody for joining us. Until next time. See ya. And stay safe..

"Go back to last summer. And we're looking at it and you think three years of demar Derozan and you're going to pay him whatever, about $80 million over those three years, or you can have two years of rust and you're going to pay him about 90 million. So you're going to pay him more, but it's going to be a shorter, shorter term contract. But but if you go with Russ, no hard cap, if you go to Marta rose and you're triggering a hard cap and then that limits your moves from there, you're saying you could make, I think you can make an argument either way. Now we'll get looking back now. You could say, oh, well, they should have gone to rose. And sure. But back then, this was a very real debate. And that hard cap was really a big deal that a lot of us were talking about and why it was going to be a challenge to build out a roster for the Lakers. Yeah, that was the whole thing. We had seen what hard capping them could do. I mean, I remember fans were interventions all the time. Why can't the Lakers make this trade? Why can't they do this deal? And it's like, well, they are hard capped themselves. So I knew the front office wasn't going to want to do that again. And demar Derozan has great of a player as he is. And again, knowing what we know now, you probably want a hard cap yourself for someone like that. But at the time, it's really hard to make that judgment call. So I think the Lakers kind of just fumbled the bag after the rush trade. And that's the situation we find ourselves in now. Now, magic, yeah. This was the tough part, was after Ross, they still like Caruso go. Like, that was the whole that was a big part. It was one of the big selling points of hey, go with Russell Westbrook, then you can keep THD. You can keep Alex Caruso. The Lakers effectively avoided a hard cap by not going with the Rosen, and then hard cap themselves by not wanting to spend money. They shot themselves in the foot. They took the advantage of going the Westbrook route and said, no, thank you. We don't want that advantage. We'll let this guy walk away anyway. That is where if your Magic Johnson and your point at the Lakers organization, you're pointing at the front office and you're saying you should have never let this guy go. Yeah, yes, 100%. Not everything that magic said was incorrect. That, I think, is a very fair and just criticism of this Lakers front office in the decision making of this past off season. There's no way that you let Alex Caruso go when you had just taken the path that would allow you to keep him. I think kind of just goes to show their attitude or mentality toward the role players on teams. I think they've kind of dug their heels in the sand and said, we can build championship teams as long as we have superstars. I think the core of that belief is fine. It's just that at a certain point, you have to start thinking about continuity, chemistry, the locker room, keeping guys around longer and rewarding those types of players. And so losing someone like Caruso, I don't know if that necessarily makes or breaks this Laker season, but there are definitely a lot better with him in the Lakers Jersey versus without. I don't think you can argue that. And I've been saying this a long time too. Team building is a very fragile thing. The Lakers were able to strike gold in 2019 when they traded for Anthony Davis, signed all these veteran guys and just took off running. Trying to replicate that again was very, very unfeasible and to see them try to do it again probably this summer. I'm very queasy about it. Yeah, I'm nervous as well. And this is why I've been saying, I think you need a new voice in the front office. I'm not saying you get rid of rob, but I think you need another voice there. Because I think the decision making from this last off season warrants that it warrants another voice in there to kind of check some of that power there. I don't think it's going to happen, but that's what I would prefer to see. That said, I think one thing that magic said is going to upset Lakers fans more than anything else. And it's false. It's not accurate. It's not true. He said the Lakers could have had buddy healed and demar Derozan yeah, he could have could have had those guys, both of them. He called them young guys. They're not really that young, but you could have had both those guys. And so first of all, the first part of that, that's false. That's not true. So Lakers fans running around saying, we could have had Derozan and buddy. No. No, you couldn't have. And then magic through this in. Just to like dig the knife in a little deeper. He said, we get to keep Caruso. We get to keep KCP. He's telling Lakers fans that they could have kept could have got demar Derozan buddy heel, keep Alex Caruso keep KCP. That's mind-blowing. No, there's no way to actually make that happen because math, it's a thing. Math is a thing. It's a thing. And the salary cap is a thing. So I forget the salary cap. Forget the numbers for a minute. Just in terms of what you would have to trade, there was no feasible way to trade for demar Derozan and trade for buddy healed. Right? I think so. We were kind of talking about this off air and going back to the demar point. I guess theoretically, under a hard cap, what damar would have signed for might have made it feasible, but if we're assuming that he got anything close to what he signed with the bulls, which is three for 82 million, basically. There was no way that that was going to work. The Lakers could have done that deal. But then what does the rest of the roster look like? So Caruso, Casey, in that sense? No. There's a lot of fans out here right now saying it probably looks just like it does right now. And they're probably right. You know, we would have had to hit on a Stanley Johnson. We would have needed to sign an Austin region. We would have needed to get winning Gabriel a lot earlier. That's the kind of roster you're looking at. But as far as what magic said goes, it's just financially, it just wasn't going to work. Unless we're talking about aggregating sign and trade salaries where you sign Caruso, you sign THT, you send those salaries out. Who's and tres have to go out in a separate deal. Kyle Kuzma is a very big part of this, right? Think about from dispersed perspective from this whole situation, they weren't going to just trade the martyr the Lakers if they weren't going to get a player. They liked back, right? So great pop culture. Helping the Lakers. If there's any way to avoid it, he's not helping the Lakers. Exactly. So I'm assuming that coups would have had to go to San Antonio to get tomorrow. Not only to make the money work, but to make the assets attractive enough for them to pull that deal. So then what does that leave you to Sacramento? To get healed. For sure going. And then do you sign and trade THT for healed in that case or Caruso? Is that how that works? If they're interested in that. But if we're looking at just the pieces that are on the table, the pieces that the Lakers were trading this off season, you can't double trade Kyle Kuzma, right? Because you would need him in the deal with the spurs. You would need him in a theoretical deal to get buddy heel. There was going to be Kyle Kuzma and tres for buddy yield. That was the deal with the kings. The deal with the spurs, we heard, was probably KCP and Kuzma? And then you're hard capping yourself? So.

"Play the blame game. That's right, we've hit that part of the year. Joining me to help out is Matt the optimist Peralta optimism prime, how you doing, Matt? I'm good, Trevor, technically, we're not dead in the water yet. There's still a very, very, very long shot. The Lakers can extend their season, but like you, I am not actually foreseeing that. So I'm great otherwise. I don't think mathematically they may not be eliminated, but let's face it they're probably eliminated here. But let's get into this because right now with the Lakers being all but done, right? All but done. And we're seeing a lot of finger pointing. That's starting to happen. And that's going to continue happening. We're going to see a lot of people coming out. There's going to be a lot of stories about, oh, well, so and so really wanted to do this. So the front office wanted to get this done. LeBron wanted this. Like, that kind of stuff is going to start trickling out, particularly once we get into the exit interviews and all of that, I'm expecting some behind the scenes information to start leaking out. Magic Johnson today decided to kick things off with a little media blitz, went on a few different ESPN properties, both television and radio to take a few shots at the Lakers, particularly at the front office and some of the decisions they made, a lot of it hinging around demar Derozan and whether or not the Lakers should have taken him over Russell Westbrook. Matt, I have a hard time when I'm looking at this because some of the things magic is saying and we'll break it down, but some of the things magic is saying is correct and some of it is so far from it's about as wrong as you can possibly be and I worry about it misleading the fan base and I know you were talking before we came on the air here about you're worried about this, this is only going to serve to upset fancy even further. Yeah, if you've been living under a rock then I'm glad you're listening to the podcast or watching the video. But magic basically came out today and said, the Lakers could have had all these good players. And the Lakers would have been fine and playing in the Western Conference championship this year. And I can't even begin to tell you how far my eyes rolled back when I first listened to it. I guess salary cap and rules don't apply to magic when he is in the front office. And I would like to point out this is why rob pelinka has a job is because he understands that he has to he has to operate under certain parameters. But yeah, my thing about this is why say this now, there's still three games left. The Lakers technically still have a shot to make the playoffs, but this serves no other purpose. It doesn't. This is just magic saying, look, I was right, the Lakers are wrong. I am the better guy here. They should have listened to me. What's the point of doing this right now? It's weird timing. It almost feels like it's because, well, hey, in a week, we can have for whatever. The season's over, people really aren't going to be paying attention to NBA basketball in LA at that point. Sorry, clippers, but let's face it. People aren't going to be paying attention to NBA basketball in LA once the Lakers are done. This is the last chance, right? This is the time now. If you're going to make any waves, you better do it right now. Clock's ticking just wants to season ends. There's going to be a drought of basketball. In LA, right between the end of the season and of course, draft time, right when we get into all the off season stuff, then everything will ramp up again. So magic is seasoning this opportunity. And by the way, I do want to preface this by saying that Magic Johnson is my favorite Laker of all time. I'm not here if there's no Magic Johnson, right? He was my first connection to the Lakers. Doesn't mean I don't disagree with some of the things that he says and does. But his place in the franchise is indisputable. I believe Kobe is the greatest Laker of all time, but Magic Johnson embodied everything that the Lakers franchise organization, the team, the spirit, what it was all supposed to be about. No time. The NBA might not be where it's at right now without Magic Johnson. So of course, all of this is with that in mind and with that context, but still, even with all of that added in. The timing is a bit odd for magic to jump out and say, oh, I told him. I told you guys, I told you to take Derozan and instead you took Westbrook and look at what happened if you had just listened to me and this feels like a shot at the Lakers front office. So why take that shot right now, Matt? Why even do this at this point? Because we're petty and we like to pile on when we can. I genuinely can't understand why this could have come out in August and it would have been fine, I guess. I mean, not fine, but this is just another distraction. There's something about magic and wanting to disrupt the end of a season. That's right. I don't know. It might be just me, I don't know. For anybody who is a new Lakers fan, if you are a new Lakers fan, bless you. I mean, what a trooper. This is your stripes early. Right. I mean, this has been, this is the worst season in Lakers history. This is the worst season. So if you are a new Lakers fan, I'm sorry, it will get better. It will get better. This is the worst season in Lakers history. But if you're a new Lakers fan magic infamously quit from his front office job as president, right before the end of the season, held this impromptu press conference, didn't tell the Lakers, just said, I'm out, see you guys. And so yeah, there was all that drama. But let's start here. Magic said that demar Derozan wanted to play for the Lakers, then he spoke to demar Derozan's agent and that he passed it along even through and then he threw a no look pass because his magic and that he basically said I said everything up for the front office demar Derozan was all good to go and then suddenly suddenly LeBron started talking to Russell Westbrook and everything changed. And I set them up with the murderers. I think it's a little bit of revisionist history. It's a little bit hindsight being 2020. Derozan has had a fantastic season. Russell Westbrook is not. To now say, oh, I told him to take demar Rosen. Matt, you and I were talking before we came on here. If we go back in time, demar Derozan was no clear cut sure thing to fix the problems the Lakers had this season. Looking now, you can say, oh yeah, it's clearly they should have taken to Marta Rosen. But back then, there were just as many question marks about the fit. I'm not talking about contract yet, but the fit of demar Derozan as there were about Russell Westbrook. Yeah, yeah. I was kind of skeptical about adding demar just from a fit standpoint as well because I think the whole thing about that was are we sure a third high usage player is going to be able to flourish next to LeBron and AD, obviously demar was having a really he was having great seasons in San Antonio. I think it had gone under the radar because they weren't winning as much. And I thought demar would have been a great piece. It's just I was very, very skeptical about a sign and trade situation. I didn't want the Lakers to hard cap themselves again in hamstring any injury, any chance to add to the roster. So if he was going to come on a mid level, which is hilarious to think about now considering what the contract he signed, that would have been awesome, but the kind of money that I think he was going to get in the open market, I think the Lakers weren't going to be able to afford. And the way this thing's played out, it kind of made sense to go after Russ, given that the Lakers had enough salary to go out and do that trade and still keep some people, but I'm sure we're going to re litigate this a bunch over this conversation, but the only reason why you trade for us so you can keep guys like Caruso and THT, the front office did not do that. So if you want to throw a pot shot at them for not doing that by all means, I'm there with you. But as far as going back to demar, it wasn't the cleanest bit. I still think that I would probably lean rust by had to do that trade again or that situation again. But hindsight is 2020. If you told me what I know today, I would do that demarcate in a heartbeat, for sure. So if you were just weighing if we had no idea what the outcome was of this current season. We hop in the Delorean, get up to 88 mph. And we.

Natalie Avnet, Jacqueline admin. Jacqueline Avnet. The mother in law to Netflix's Ted sarandos. And the wife of the musical guru clarence Avnet, a man who is known as the black godfather and is admired by everyone from Bill Clinton to Snoop Dogg to Magic Johnson to Barack Obama to P diddy. You name it. There's a Netflix special called the black godfather all about this guy. So the other night, the Beverly Hills night was shattered by a home invasion on a very quiet street and a beautifully safe neighborhood called truesdale. There is no crime in truesdale, putting how this crime everywhere. The 80 year old couple had a private security guard on duty at the house, and yet still a burger smashed in the black sliding glass door. How brazen these motherfuckers now. And he fired off a round from his AR-15 that struck Jacqueline in the head and killed her instantly. At least I think it was the head. In a way, no one knows if it was aiming for her, but he hit it. It could have been an errant shot that just nailed it. Either way, it's fucking murder. Clarence advent was not hurt. Nor was the security guard. Good for him, he got out of the way. More on that in a minute. But now cops have caught the bad guy who killed Jacqueline Avnet. I hate the paper still say allegedly. Well, who do you think fucking killed? Do you think the husband shot has gone beyond her head? Oh my God, I can't stand these fucking journalists. The guy was caught in a backyard roughly an hour after the shooting and is caught on video, handcuffed to a wheelchair after being taken into custody. Why is he handcuffed to a wheelchair? Because this piece of shit surprised a convicted felon named Ariel Maynard, black dude, traveled from I like saying the color. It matters. Travel from Beverly Hills to the Hollywood Hills after the attack at the Afghan home to bang in another person's home. And he attempted to break into the home and nails, and in the process, this idiot shot himself in a foot with an AR-15.

Because that's his name? Yeah, he came to the league as magic. He didn't earn that King James. That's a nickname. Yeah. Nobody calls him King, though. Nobody like just randomly just taking like nobody does that. I don't know. In basketball circles. I'm sure some of his teammates probably do Twitter. Definitely causing King James think his teammates call him King. Yeah. They call them Brown. They might do that, too. Don't do they call him King myself. But Twitter definitely calls him King James, and therefore that's a nickname. Would you ever call a teammate King if that's his nickname? Really? Yeah, but I don't look at it like that. It's not. Who Invented the High Five?
"The origin of the high five is kind of disputed slash not really exactly known a forerunner to the high five was the low five part of black american culture since at least the nineteen twenties. War two apparently magic johnson even once implied that he invented it while it michigan state's which blows my mind because my dad was in the same dorm building as magic johnson. Who like was my dad present for the invention of the high five. Probably not. But i suppose i should ask him just in case. Even if magic johnson himself didn't create it he was most likely there when it first started taking off of the top contenders for its origin. They all take place in the late. Nineteen seventies in the world of sports. One story goes that it was created by wiley brown and derek smith from the university of louisville cardinals during the nineteen. You mentioned Bob Nightingale when we had him on the Major League baseball kind of USA today, and he told by Jack, would you mention about what kind of guy Not only are the Met's getting, but the city of New York? Looking back to the Lakers and the Magic Johnson days. He's going like the Magic Johnson of baseball. Just always. You know that infectious person Now they always smiling, laughing. Judicious with the reporters in pan fun guy to be around. So you know, there's not too many fighters in baseball there. She paid up. Did he play But he didn't one of them in, uh, certainly very talented, but it's not that Charisma to were nothing to be a huge, huge fan say that and he could be like that. You know you're very generous of other Yankees back in those days where he dominates these No more baseball player in town. One of my favorite stories about Francisco Lindows of the All Star Game where they might the players and Joe Buck is up there with John smokes, and they're talking to me goes. Hey, where you guys, you go and John Small says, Look straight head that looks straight up. Francisco. Linda does that and then hey, what's going on My guys, how you doing? I'm thinking that I said to myself, man to that guy will play for my team. I get that jersey immediately because that is supposed to represent you baseball now. Yes, And guess what Freddie's getting before. You know, Valentine's Day. Hey, Francisco Men door Jersey that he's gonna be wearing on this program. Chris Mooney hit us on Twitter. Come on, ESPN. Vivian fits ESPN saying I'd like to trade for Linda or but I'm really gonna miss the minutes. We could have kept him to learn under Linda, or if you're going to get somebody like that, you gotta give a little something. The Mets did that. And now they've got a big price of Francisco Linda or Joining their team. He's in Fitz Simmons on Freddie Coleman on Freddy and Fitz Simmons. Will Doncic's Practice Habits Make Him the Next Jordan?
"What are his practice Habits Like like what? What is he like when we do see him but you do. Is he the same way as he smiling and having fun yet, very professional and also able to kind of have that killer instinct in practice. I thought well, he's a competitor and his practice habits each year continue to get better and better. He's a young guy that likes to compete. So when we're doing stuff offers, you know, five-on-five competition or will have some kind of a a prize for a you know, winning a drill. I mean he reminds me a lot of Jason Kidd that way and if you come up with a dog To try to simulate something, you know kid and and digest or guys that will figure out the best possible way to manipulate the drill to you know, like practicing one day where yeah, you had to make at least five passes for you got shots. So his adjustment to it was to throw it back and forth to the fight to the to the center four times in the back one and then that you know, she can play you know, and so but but this is this is what great players and some of the real, you know, survive fingers that we've seen in the history of this game. You're talking about guys like bird like Magic Johnson Jordan, you know was it was very very similar LeBron James. I'm sure Kobe Bryant was was a lot like just too but as as as time moves along, you know, the the level of growth is really there and in all areas from Skillet. I meant to to leadership on the floor in games and

Magic Johnson makes admission about his Twitter account
"Johnson the great magic Johnson, either has the best or worst account on NBA twitter terrible with almost no inbetween. gator would agree as someone who's name is escaping me. One said magic tweets like someone who thinks they're the only one with television, providing the most lukewarm takes and updates possible to everyone without a TV usually a day, or so after whatever he's tweeting. tweeting about happen, that's pretty good. That's actually pretty pretty spot on why he loved tweeting. And what are essentially ESPN? APP push alerts so much. Is that why he wanted to step down from running the Lakers as an endlessly fascinating question s for the people are really fixated on this. As the writer of this story writes, it turns out. It gets even more interesting because apparently magic isn't even the ones sending his own tweets as he. He revealed to Rob Lowe at a truly bizarre exchange. Why wouldn't rob lowe and Magic Johnson have a conversation about this an appearance on Rob Pelinka's lookalike podcast. I didn't Rob Pelinka look like Rob Lowe Rob Lowe rights or said Dino. Pardon my take their podcast. Those guys are huge fans as you know. And I said Look, you're the best boards podcast GonNa be interviewing magic. He's going to be one of my first guest you. You of new questions. You have any thoughts blah. Blah Blah Blah Blah I don't know I have somebody right out my tweets I. Tell them what I wanted to say, and they write them down. That's actually what Kuhn did for you. John. Yeah yeah, exact, exact, same thing, so yeah I can see it four point nine million followers. He has on twitter I. Don't think follow Magic Johnson, because he's so milk milk toast, so here's the thing. I have learned and I. I agree with this take that a lot of celebrities athletes. They don't want to be on social media. They understand that it can ruin their careers, but it becomes part of deals that they signed with sponsors, and all this other stuff that they need to be promoting their brands on social media, so if you really are worried about yourself, messing up on social media, but you're being forced to buy some contract that you signed to make a bunch of money promoting something then I. Guess that's a good solution.

I'm on around thirty to fifty different podcasts as a guest every single year and I should be doing more because the opportunity is there and it is actually a lot of value. It's a lot of value for. For the time you're going to be putting into these interviews, remember podcasts are evergreen so once it's recorded, and it's in the podcast feed. People can go back and listen to it over and over again new listens will listen to your interview for years to come, so you reap the benefits for years after you actually were interviewed but I'm GonNa. Let Man Johnson get into all the details. I'll be back to wrap up today's episode and give my takeaways, but for now take it away Matt. Everybody welcome back. It's Matt Johnson and we're GONNA. Talk about the four ways to upgrade your relationships in your network using podcast interviews now here, let me set the scene for you, so let's say you're going on podcast and your guest, which is awesome Some of the people that you're going to be interviewed by are in and of themselves ultra successful. podcasts does these days are not just people who are looking to make money and monetize a podcast. A lot of the the successful podcasts hosts are in their own right experts. Entrepreneurs Ultra successful business coaches, consultants, speakers, authors, the whole nine yards. These the people that you want to be connected with these are the people that can refer you speaking engagements. They can help promote your book. They have a big email list that they might be able to promote your latest. Service offering these are the people that you want to be in relationship with because they can send you business, not just be a client. They can send you a stream of clients, and so you. WanNa turn those podcasts interviews with them into not just them interviewing you and then moving on any never talk to each other again. You'RE GONNA. Turn them into real real relationships and we're GONNA. Talk about four insider tactics to do that number one. After the interview when you're chitchatting behind the scenes after the record button is off, ask them. Hey, just out of curiosity. Like how can I help? Who Can? Who can I keep an eye out for to introduce you to like? Who is that person in your world? That that would really make a difference. And I can tell you the difference that's made for me in my life to ask people that question I literally cannot express how it almost stops people in their tracks and causes them to completely go. While I first of all I appreciate Let me let me think okay well. You know I'm looking for this type of person. Even if they can't come up with something, and even if the person they're looking for is not someone that you know right away in your life that you can send an introduction email. That's fine. The questions were count and the genuine offer if it's January. The genuine offer is what really makes an impact. It's absolutely incredible now. I'll tell you I. did this with with a gallon I had on on my podcast. And I just wanted to thank her for her time and ask that same question and. She mentioned that was looking for people to speak at her women's conference in Texas, the said okay. I think I have someone for you I didn't think anything of it. I made a simple introduction email behind the scenes I get a message from the person I introduced you to her two. Weeks later like I had completely forgotten that I'd made the introduction I got this incredible facing measure the city. I just wanted to thank you. That was life changing. I've found my tribe. It was so awesome like I can't wait to tell you about it. Can we please set up a calls that I can tell you how much I appreciate that introduction like that absolutely blew me away. The same thing will happen to you especially as you get into the habit of asking people who you can introduce them to, and then being intentional about actually making strategic introductions behind the scenes, so that's number one officer strategic introductions wherever possible follow through and actually do it. Number two. Insider tactic to turn and podcast interviews into relationships is send a follow up note now. This is if you're busy entrepreneur. This is ridiculously hard to do most of us and I will tell you sitting down and doing the actual handwritten note cards slapping him into an envelope putting a stamp on it throwing in the mailbox. A step too far can do it like way way too way too hard for me. so what I did. Is I I told my my va for my log for the company called. Send out cards. actually got. Right here actually I received this one. And very nice card from a friend of mine, and basically I can build this card in their. APP and have a handwritten note and written right handwritten. Looking note the goes into is sent from the APP and I. Can send it out to anybody. I want so what I did is I built a low system with my overseas va I gave her. Her my log in for the send out cards account and every day she goes into my calendar, and she looks at who I had caused with the previous day sends me a message on boxer and says hey. I see to call John, Smith and Sarah Johnson, and whatever Hey, would you like me to send cards to and I will say okay. Okay. Send cards to these three people and I. Just give her a voice message to tell exactly what I wanted to say in each card. Teach different person she reaches out sends him. A nice email, says hey. Matt would like to send you a thank you note. He really enjoyed talking to you the other day. Would you mind sending your mailing address so that we can send you a nice a nice car? always get a response. First of all the response we get to that email alone would blow you away. then when we actually follow through in the actually get the note I get thank you notes to the thank you. Notes
