Interview With Andrew Bernstein
"In his lengthy career. He's developed many friendships, not least of which was with Kobe Bryant with whom he collaborated the book. The Mamba, mentality how I play. And career special not because of the many iconic image he's made, but because he's demonstrated that he is the kind of man who puts in the extra effort and time to be a great photographer, a good father and a good man. This is about an ex in welcome back to the candidate frame. A first off welcome. Welcome to the show. It's have you thank you very much happy to year. Always Nice to talk to a legend. Old? I know. We talk a lot about your career as a sports photographer and that's we're going to spend a lotta time doing but I always to talk to sports, photographers or anyone who's been covering the game for a long time, always like hearing the story of the first live event smart event that they ever went to. That was like significant for them. What would that be? The first one I shot like no other one shot, but. went to maybe as a kid well, that's a great question I would have to say a grew up. A mets fan I. also a Rangers Fan growing up. I remember distinctly go into a myths game with my dad. I probably was maybe seven or eight. And, we were sitting behind home plate at Shea Stadium frankly sort halfway up, maybe third deck or something in. A foul ball team our way straight back. Identity shoved me out of the way in cod with one round. Tremendous amount it's been going. You know I'll never forget that I'm glad you remind me of that. That was fifty something years ago. An amazing that's A. Great Memory have first game. Yeah, well, it's better than getting in the head with a puck. But it would. No it was, it was a great memory. I had that ball forever I. Don't know what happened to it. In various moves over the years on the hockey side remember going to see the Rangers play in back. In the day we used to Go the old Madison Square Garden. This is the garden that was up on Tenth Avenue. I believe before they built the new garden in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy one. And the old guard, and had these pillars that you know. The new garden had the suspended ceiling. We made it so revolutionary. The Old Guard was Lee elda auditorium in at these pillars came down, and they sold seats literally behind the pillars that would call obstructed view seats. Added stamped on the ticket obstructed view. And you, literally sitting behind the pillar, and that's where me, the kid with always stupid behind the pillar. Every single time by Dan we get the tickets were like fifty cents. So that's what my earliest memories ago to raise your AIDS, I went to I can't remember which was first where there was a rams game at the coliseum that was my first, or whether it was dodger game. Experienced that I, remember was just the noise of so many people. And just it's unlike any other feeling I ever had were have dislike. Thousands of thousands of people around you at the same time, and there's something that I think is. Very lowering about that whether you are a sports fan as Lords player in your case of a photographer and talked to me about the intoxication of just that feeling at that sound. And, what it does for you especially when you're out there virtually in the center of it, it's still funny and bringing this up because the last. Or so this is gonNA sound really weird, but I've had this crazy ringing in my ear might. Equally right, it never experience, so go to the doctor. Get a hearing test the whole thing that they do. It comes back I have like twenty percent hearing loss at the high frequency, not unusual for my age. The audiologist says Mrs Wonder What kind of let me ask you. What kind of work do you do? I said well sports photographer you in noisy environments. She says I said. When's the last time we were in one? Four months ago. Well the ever experiences when you're in a loud arena or stadium I should not consciously. She's a will. Maybe you haven't withdrawal surgical. Rain you this consciously? Hearing it because it was so used to hearing it for forty years, isn't that? It's so bizarre.
Pam Shriver - US Open finalist aged 16, winning Olympic Gold, and partnering Martina Navratilova
"Thank you so much for doing. This is an absolute treat to have you come and yeah in very strange circumstances obviously for everybody in the world not just the tennis world. You're joining us from California. I believe how how things over there. How has lockdown? How you coping the situation and the lack of tennis in La Lives. Well I would say over all I'm really proud of my three teenagers at a time. When teenagers want to distance themselves from their parents. They've accepted what has to be done. I feel like California in the mayor of Los Angeles I live. We live in Los Angeles. So we've had some leadership both at the state level and and at the city level that has been really strong very consistent and I think that's one of the reasons why Are Part of the United States is actually done much better than expected in pleased that the generation who the order to stay at home. It's really counterintuitive to what they want but There's been a lot of acceptance in I can tell you as a homeowner sixteen years ago bought up property with a private tennis court. Tennis court is one of the reasons why a couple of us in the family have kept better sanity. How much you missing professional tennis right now? Well you know I missed Indian. Wells would have been an easy drive. I missed that one. The most I will tell you because of the business of my home life regardless of a pandemic or even if I'm just driving my three kids around and The the level of detail that I would follow the tour from week to week is not as detailed as it would be like when I worked for ESPN at Melbourne and maybe look the weeks leading up to Melbourne. I knew what was going on in the lead up tournament so for me personally. I haven't missed it that much but we haven't yet gone past one of the tournaments. I think would impact us the most which would be say for for me. Roland. Garros Wimbledon. I mean I thought the tennis will did a great job of I mean it was tough call for Indian Wells. I remember that Sunday night when it was called It took everybody by little bit by surprise but it just started the domino effect of what this virus in the effects on the world sports It just started a series of closures around the world yet studying to look like a very pristine cooled by by that tournament. Looking at your Your social media. You look like you've taken the opportunity during lockdown to have the most neatly and cleanly arranged trophy show in all of Iraq in Pam. Yeah one of my first during lockdown one of the first things I was thinking. Well little things can I post What content would be interesting and I thought all right well. My mantle pretentious fans would be interesting to see The the major championship doubles trophies. Most support try one with Martina. There was a US Open with a net. Pashas vary of there was some Fed Cup stuff. There was recognition of our Grand Slam doubles year as well as the year. I got the finals of US. Open in singles at Sixteen. So I thought it was kind of a fun tour and I guess most of the stuff I posted that one had the most views in. I think it just shows you how much people want to see one way or another or or touch any way major tennis. He absolutely in all of these things that that you just mentioned there. I I really want to talk about. I in first and foremost your your partnership with Martina Navratilova. Seventy four doubles titles together including Twenty Grand Slams. You're you're still the most successful women's doubles partnership of all time. What what made you such a great partnership the too well. I think there are a lot of things I think when you look at how we played our singles The style of play with serve volley back in the eighties. That was kind of. That's how you play doubles back then too so it was really Our our singles games translated into being great doubles players. Naturally the lefty righty combination. If you look in tennis history whether it's nukem Roach whether it's the Brian twins whether it's McEnroe Fleming There's a lot of great Lefty righty doubles teams. I just think you know the choice of who serves the sun's tougher righty. There's just a lot of things that are beneficial to having a lefty righty Our personalities you don't have a partnership that long if your personalities don't gel well We enjoyed each other Our senses of humor clicked in. There are a lot of those matches through the years where we would play after. Martina was the featured match at night So we played and we had to wait late night tennis So if you didn't enjoy each other and our coaches got along. Well obviously we had teams. That were much smaller back then. My team was generally just one Martino. It's one of the first that brought in teams of more than one But our team's got along well and so it just led to who knew that January eighty-one with lead to what it ended up leading to it was I think ultimately nineteen eighty that Martina. Kool G to US could be your your partner partner. What do you remember about that? Phone call was at Deer Creek Country Club in Deerfield Beach Florida having a late practice and I'm a member. Lee Jackson longtime referee for the tour and She came out and You know years and years before anyone has self owner yet said Martinez on the phone and I mean whoever is practicing with the it was the practice was abandoned Iran in got it got on the phone. And W T tour office and You know she asked me. She doesn't mix her words. She didn't learn a lot of pleasantries. Just asked me if I had that commitment to doubles partner for the next year and I said no I did not. I had just the. Us Open just a month prior. I'd gotten into the finals with Betty Stove in Betty Stove his last tournament. And we lost Billie Jean King and Martinez. I think it was six six or five and five and I think that was probably the last indicator. Martina needed that. She she she was looking for. A younger partner was starting. Her career could play for a period of time and so it was obvious it. I didn't even have to break commitment. Thank God because if I'd had a commitment to somebody I mean that would have been a tough a tough one to pass on playing doubles with Martina. So I'm glad it worked out that I didn't have a commitment to a partner confessed to a tip off from for Mary Carillo but she has suggested that that I ask you about asking Martina to sign a cocktail Napkin to seal to seal team together forever. Yeah well we had already been together a long time because we we. We went through a stage at think Springtime of eighty four. We lost in the tournament of Champions in Orlando. We didn't lose again for over two years so I think it was. One hundred nine straight matches When we hit a one hundred wins and it was in Eastbourne so the tournament director George. Tendon threw a party for us that night. And we were celebrating To to the history of tennis no one can remember doubles team ever hitting one hundred wins in a row so A I decided to take that moment. I wrote a contract on a on a peeper. Napping it says I'M MARTINA NAVRATILOVA. Promise always to play doubles with Pam. Shriver and I had a witness line. The George Hendon was signed in as I stood up to give the toast and give the contract Martinez in my head ended up in a lamp shade so it was kind of like it was funny and it was. I have that I have. I still have that cocktail napkins somewhere. But it's back in Baltimore. My hometown Collecting dust but will not be thrown out. One hundred nine matches is is truly extraordinary April nine hundred ninety three to July one thousand nine hundred five did you did you feel. Invincible is a team. Well a lot of those matches we went into the matches knowing we were going to win them. But there was a handful that were incredibly dicey and I remember one in particular that was Right in the middle while it was about win number seventy five and it was in Madison Square Garden against our longtime rival. They were generally the number two team behind us. For many of those years Souckova Elena Sakaba Claudia. Coda kill and we came down to a tiebreak in the final set and I remember it was five. All it was late in the tie-break whenever I was returning and Martina just said return it low and I'm going to go and I'm like yes ma'am you know like you WanNa. That was great. It was like a plan now. Of course then you still have to execute but I remember as soon as I hit the return like that's going to be a low. It was a good return. Sheet timed or poach perfectly. Put It away and then we won the next point on serve so that was the hairiest moments that was when we came within two points of losing. But other than that. I don't remember match where we were like. Matchpoints down we. We won a lot of those matches during that streak in

"Owner Steve Ballmer late today announced a deal to buy the forum in Inglewood from Madison Square Garden and clears the path for bomber to build a new arena for the clippers nearby the forum will stay on as a music venue Madison Square Garden had sued the clippers and Inglewood arguing that a new arena would take away
March Madness is going to be very different this year
"Madness will be among the nation wide events that are being altered because of the corona virus NCAA president mark Emmert announced the games in both the men's and women's tournaments will be closed to the public with only a limited number of players families and officials in attendance the move to prevent the spread of covert nineteen virus comes as college conference tournaments are in full swing across the country the Atlantic coast conference is in day two of its five day men's tournament in Greensboro North Carolina the pac twelve played the first game in Las Vegas the Southeastern Conference begins the men's tournament in Nashville Tennessee the Biggie starts at Madison Square Garden in New York there are no plans to restrict fan access to those
Only essential staff and limited family at NCAA tournaments
"NCAA president mark Emmert announced the games in both the men's and women's tournaments will be closed to the public with only a limited number of players families and officials in attendance the move to prevent the spread of covert nineteen virus comes as college conference tournaments are in full swing across the country the Atlantic coast conference is in day two of its five day men's tournament in Greensboro North Carolina the pac twelve played the first game Wednesday at its tournament in Las Vegas the Southeastern Conference begins the men's tournament in Nashville Tennessee the Biggie starts at Madison Square Garden in New York and the big ten is scheduled to tip off in Indianapolis there are no plans to restrict fan access to those events I'm Tim McGuire
The Ivy League's decision to cancel the basketball tournaments was unfair to athletes
"Yeah I believe straight up cancelled its men's and women's tournaments the automatic berths going to the regular season champs which is what the I really did until four years ago so that means the Yale man and the Princeton women are given the automatic berths to the NC WRAL to around the horn yeah this is an interesting decision by the I really I really feel for these other teams you know you mentioned Princeton they're started by the way is bell Allori market Valerie's daughter they only lost one right I am over time so they're all they're all set for the women but Harvard can you imagine the beef they have they beat this team twice they were hosting the tournament Tony so you can I can't even imagine as a student athlete preparing all week or for however long fourteen and then the calls come in saying yeah I never mind us seniors you're done it's over that's just heartbreaking I had to have been a better way a lot of complete people are playing without fans maybe I really should consider a good soul yeah I am happy for James Jones I've known since he was in junior high so I'm happy for you know that he's going to the tournament I'm not happy for anybody else on the women's side or the men's side because just play the tournament in an empty gym why are we going to this extreme measure and the coach of Penn bring up a great point you have across teams are going on the road wrestlers are going on the road right now for matches why would you have to cancel this stuff the gala trouble you yeah I mean the first one I want to say anybody in any this is making a terrible decision because there's no easy play book there's no easy guide to know what to do here but I will say like like Frank just and Frank and Jackie just said there's other sports going on and they're allowing those to continue now there's gonna be other conference tournaments going on the pac twelve just said they're playing in Las Vegas that's a lot bigger crowd ostensibly more dangerous health situation I would guess so it you know it's it's a tough call I don't know I don't know why they don't play it you know without fans and I think we are going to get to that point in some sports we just don't know how soon bill clashes I think it's a total panic move I mean so Yellen Princeton can play this week if they can play next week in March madness the play other teams are from the fan housing health risks the any different if we can is this week it doesn't make any sense and there's no health official in this country nobody has said that they should have athletic events now keeping the fans out that's the way to go I think that's probably probably is a pretty smart way to do it I don't think these games need fans but these games the players ready to play and there there's no significant health risk I don't know why they do it again it seems like a panic move to me it should be said on many of these universities Harvard for one and many universities across the country are now in a new online classes pretty good so you can address something else be like well what was interesting you know the bill we're talking about the pac twelve the fact that their plan why is that because we know they're gonna get a lot of fans are the same thing with the biggest tournament here Madison Square Garden the Ivy League they'll give fans but it's not the money maker that some of these bigger conferences are so I think that's probably one of the reasons why the bigger conference center we're having the tournament and maybe that's why it made it easier for the Ivy League but they should be a little more considerate to those other players like the coach talked about seniors and you're telling them today by the way your career is over after mac yeah you know the other thing too is keep in mind that the I really didn't even start a post season tournament two thousand seventeen so I think that maybe they feel like well you know we've always put academics above all the rest is here's just a total conjecture on my part you mention Harvard they've already told their students were on break you're not going to come back after a break your to do online courses so obviously Harvard that university in particular is taking a very conservative approach and they were the ones hosting cal OSHA you know plasti said something a minute ago that a week ago it is sounded just absurd these games they'll need fans and realistically it's probably the the safest way to go and I think we'll eventually get to that in some sports when you think about putting twenty thousand people on top of each other you know in a congested arena that may be the way the the easiest way to spread the virus and they may you know we do have televisions we can't watch these games from home so for a short period of time that may be the way we have to guess what's what we're seeing worldwide right and the arenas and that's what we're seeing with some conferences the Ivy League co opting to cancel there's other conferences opting for not crowded or empty arenas
Big East Tournament opens at Madison Square Garden
"It's March madness time for Villanova here's K. Y. W. said banking it's set for big east tournament play coach Jay Wright will try to get many of his younger players to settle in playing in the world's most famous arena it's a big thing you know I still get excited going there so there there are eighteen nineteen years older they're going to be excited the Wildcats first game at Madison Square Garden will be on Thursday against the winner of Wednesday night's game between Nepal and
Spike Lee: I'm done watching Knicks at MSG this season
"And Oscar winning movie director is having a battle with his favorite NBA team spike Lee got attention on social media Monday for a fight with security at Madison Square Garden during the New York Knicks game against the Houston Rockets we addressing the issue Tuesday on ESPN claiming harassment at the hands of Knicks owner James Dolan saying word came from the top to suddenly hassle him over the entrance through which she came in
Spike Lee and James Dolan are having a silly feud over which MSG entrance Lee can use
"Area obviously the fallout continues on from Spike Lee having to sort of be re routed or potentially routed from the entrance he's been in all these years and it upset him greatly so we went on first take and then the next the next released a statement saying it's laughable that he's playing the victim card and actually posted footage of the VIP entrance and then a touching of hands in some way shape or form with Knicks owner James Dolan and Spike Lee as he was upset about he could use the app is used for twenty four years and about how you feel about that part of it which I understand if the Knicks are trying to avoid that I get that it was handled clumsily I think that's an easy way to say all of this correct yes it was handled in a way that seemed almost designed to draw attention to it yeah after after by the weight Leon rose as the team present the first came with him they beat the rockets right the Knicks are not a good team and they beat a good team and yet this became the story so obviously someone having an issue with James Dorn is a nothing new but be it reminded us of someone else who very recently had a very public issue with that is a square garden and James Dorn that'll be Charles Oakley who was escorted out of the building by executing was told in twenty seventeen by James Dorn you'll never get into MSG again even if you buy a ticket so of course we were gonna have Charles Oakley on the show this morning to talk about what he thought of the Spike Lee situation of what is going on under James Jones ownership and let's just say Charles did not hold back it is a plantation whether it's good bad people won't talk about is real bad over there someone may have been but I think it was twenty years old ten million dollars in new quick about it because though that bill what what is this mail problem bottle control you so much of a control freak then he heard the whole NBA them all immediately this guy hit land every month or every other week with something that don't have many women together with individual people life we should be going to live with them days will be cold with this control freak in all this that if the court would be in the business you have to have people to work for you so you have to go with people to succeed in life you got into trouble operating business you need people to work he was in distress are working every day wow I mean he listen it was a hell of an interview no doubt about it and and and I guess he he kind of gave an answer by saying that he thinks in all honesty the league should take the franchise away from him but that's not gonna happen but he can he compare him to Donald sterling he said because we've pointed out this on numerous occasions that none of this changes while James Dorn is the owner we don't expect some metamorphosis from him and his point was this is so bad for the lead we saw another very different instance but he pointed out the comparison with Donald sterling saying the league stepped in then he believes the league should step in now I I just don't see them doing that and just like we all don't see no matter who the coaches the GM is the president is good likely on rose that it doesn't matter because players are not you if you're gonna build a team what what Charles Oakley said you're not the building through the draft when you draft somebody to come there because big time free agents are not coming to play for the Knicks yeah what happened this past summer they cleared all the cap space in two point prime free agents did they just didn't go to the next they went to the nets and Stephen A. Smith is in on this as well basically saying the culture of the next sadly is still the culture now I can't he can't he can't help the Knicks win and winning you will accept already and still make the culture that you can get that part the only expense but the only person that can fix this culture change though James Dolan have stopped thank hi guys that that's in Charles Oakley brought that I mean you you you you're in New York you have to have a little bit of a tougher widely I mean okay we can bring that up what do you think that's going to happen if we don't we don't there's no chance that we think that's going to happen this guy owns the most or the franchise won the most in all the NBA one fifth in all of sports right in that area four point six billion dollars he is not as we talk about money should make you treat people assert what you treat people but this guy ain't changing no well that's I guess that's the issue and all this right is you look at it and say unless someone else does step in James Dorn is gonna own this team for as long as he wants a life is about what's incentivized writing his behavior based on the numbers that you just said has been incentivized it is been shown Hey this is a lucrative for you it may not win you basketball games but it's going to make you money you're gonna get to feel important and do all the things that come along with owning the Nixon owning Madison Square Garden and yada yada yada on down the list but what can we count on until that is an endless loop of things like this what an endless loop of Fruita futility so much so that if the Knicks are other good it's going to be completely on accident yeah yeah it's going to be just because within the body of a long period of time a broken clock is right twice a day
Spike Lee says he's being "harassed" by Knicks owner
"Well the director and loyal next France bike Lee says he won't be back to Madison Square Garden this season lead telling ESPN he's being harassed by Knicks owner James Dolan and doesn't know why the next say Lee tried to use the garden centers for employees and media and was denied access by security there's a special VIP entrance
Spike Lee: I'm done watching Knicks at MSG this season
"And this is so next by the way yeah introduce Leon rose yesterday you're going up against the rockets who are on a roll with Westbrook and harden you have beat the rockets L. R. J. Barrett has a really nice game Leon roses water now what a start for the New York Knicks well the New York Knicks how bout that and then the biggest story the next day the national story the next day is that Spike Lee got an altercation with security guards and what happened is spike Lee's been a season ticket holder for thirty something years Hey you know when he was on first take today it was revealed that he spends about three hundred thousand dollars a year see the garbage that are the New York Knicks at nineteen forty two I have been embarrassing thanks Steve mills since two thousand and thirteen had three hundred and sixty five losses and its wings were like one seventy eight or are there under two hundred so the next it's one thing to be bad on the court but there's been so many moments where they've been a laughing stock off the court with the Charles Oakley situation which Oakley wasn't a hundred percent on the right he said it conducted himself better but the next find a way to make whatever the situation is the absolute worst thing possible so you have Spike Lee entering what he claims the building the entrance thirty dollars each and every year for the thirty years that he's been there I actually know the entrance it's the thirty third street entrance of Madison Square Garden in between seventh and eighth Avenue I've gone through that entrance it's an employee a media member entrance I would I cover the rain I cover the range of postseason for those two great runs and I went there a countless amount of times and every time I walked in there I've seen a famous person or to go through that secret or not secret but that important entrance so with that all being said even though it says employees and media you see celebrities in there all the time for example I was a regular person going to Billy Joel a few months ago and they had me pick up my tickets there and go through that entrance who did I think jazz voluntary so they have the labs like actual celebrities going through that entrance all the time so whatever it is and whatever transpired the New York Knicks claim that they told Spike Lee many times not to go to that entrance anymore you have to go through our V. I. P. entrance which is on thirty first St Michael Lee he claims but that was never told to it and this is something he claims he's done for thirty years going through this entrance so let's hear Spike Lee on first take earlier today was Stephen A. and Max Kellerman and Molly telling his side of the story with the whole MSG confrontation I've been using the same entrance the twenty plus years employees enters on three third street yesterday last night I go in my ticket is scanned I'm it I would you know the elevator yes one elevator and elevator also people have the tickets can also and L. is not moving and the security guy called me said we need to get off the elevator I said for what so we could speak about a NASA might get not elevator so no five minutes then they probably sent Elliott because they know I'm not do not elevator get on the elevator other groups of five and screamed waking life is run on a bases still soft and they said security guy all this comes to the top do you want me to leave the garden walk outside data out the thirty third street employers what came from walk outside and come back on thirty first St I somebody doing a personable you scanned my ticket you can scan and check it twice also I noticed once you leave the sport arena event you can't come back to it so I don't trust these guys so I'm not going to help you dork so I said I'm not leaving I put my hands behind my back and I sit or rest me like my brother Charles Oakley do we really need to get our rescue because you're refusing to leave like Spike Lee I don't think that's going to end up what happening spike Lee's gonna be dry data there and hand comes out but you know we talked about how they scanned his ticket so sincerity scanned his ticket no matter who you believe in this he said you know she said I owe you know they'd they'd never told me to go to this other engines they did tell me to go to the dentist about who you believe is the easy way to defuse the situation we already scanned your ticket spike in future you know moments when you come into the guard in future times you need to now go to the thirty first street next time you do this because I'm assuming it's similar security guard night in and night out I just my experience is going in there to see the same security guards we won't scan your ticket again I'm gonna tell you to go to that entrance it's all they had to do and then he also goes on first take and says he didn't shake this is my third did not believe Spike Lee totally he says he didn't shake Dolan sand and then the next because when they confront each other halftime the next up to be so badly they can never just let something blow over the New York Knicks then released a photo as it don't put someone up in the three hundred section looks at the blue seats and Adam shoot down on this sort of situation the photo kinda looks like that Spike Lee at his hand down to his side and then all the sudden don't basically picked it up it looks like a forced hand shake but regardless there's a photo of them shaking each other's hand regardless of who is it shouldn't be a story you just introduce your new president Leon rose you beat the rockets but the next can never let a story just go

New York: Judge dismisses ex-Knicks star Oakley's lawsuit against Dolan, MSG over ejection from game
"This has been being talked about by all the NBA people. So I didn't want it to be spoiled for all right so this is a genuine reaction. I have no idea where you say. So what is the episode? That set you off where you're no longer going to attend games at masters locally being dragged by his pants or whatever out of the arena. Okay so after. That is out there and did nothing. So after that Charles Oakley Sue James Dolan Square Garden a civil lawsuit well today that lawsuit was dismissed by Manhattan federal judge so Oakley sued MSG for defamation assault false imprisonment and other and other things related to this twenty seventeen incident. He claimed in his suit. He was being unfairly targeted for making jabs at Dole. And who's also in attendance? And then they also claimed that oh he was drunk and belligerent. So this got thrown out. The judge sided with Dolan and Madison Square Garden. Saying Oakley failed to make a plausible legal argument to support these claims Madison Square Garden. James Dolan released a statement all no. We thanked the court for its ruling. This was an incident that no one was happy about. Maybe now there can be peace. Maybe be peace between us. What an olive branch. What an olive branch now. Maybe that you sued me. And there's no legal standing in I guess any New York Law Federal Law. Whatever law there might be that. There is no legal standing of an argument that I should win this case because James Dolan is a complete a whole. That's not that's not a legal a valid legal perch from which to sue someone so now maybe there can be peace between us. Oh my gosh. Is there nobody in Madison Square Garden? That could tell this man what to say. Is there nobody? I mean there has to be because he's the one that went to the Michael Caine interview years ago. Would that that said the binder that said talking points right. Yeah so. The man is open to receiving talking points. How can somebody say? Hey Mr Dolan if you don't mind taking off that scarf it's it's ridiculous and the Fidora Dora. If you don't mind makes you get just put away all of your materials getting set to open up for the mighty mighty Boston's what are the eagles. It's just eagles by the way. And and and if you say this there is a large portion of your Fan Base. That does feel that. Charles Oakley had a point. If you say that now there could be. Maybe peace between us that you're offering of an olive branch is his loss in court. Meaning you're the aggrieved party. Not Him. This might make things a little bit worse for this part of the fan base. That loves Charles. There's no is there. Nobody in that building that can look him in the face. And say you're paying me to say this to you even say that so. You don't feel whatever Rath that might rain upon you from a mercurial boss Kevin Kevin was the security Kevin can say it. Did it taking place on an evening that should have been one of Carter's greatest triumphs the night? He formally accepted the democratic party's nomination to run for a second term as president. But on the stage at Madison Square Garden. Ted Kennedy who had challenged Carter a grueling primary battle you million at him. Kennedy was drinking that night Carter told ward everybody knew it on the stage when we were looking for harmony, I reached out to shake his hand. He refused to shake hands with me. In fact, Carter was miss remembering events slightly Kennedy had shaken his hand that night a couple of times. But over the course of a few awkward minutes. Kennedy did refuse to clasp hands with Carter and raise their arms together, the traditional show of unity that the delegates in the garden has. As well. As the national TV audience was looking for it was an enduring symbol of the rift within the Democratic Party between. "Of professional wrestling according to yours, truly. Now I was criticized by wanted to people. I don't know. I read tweets, sometimes I don't see every single app mentioned, but. I was I've been criticized in the past for going WWE Centric. And sometimes I agree with the criticism and sometimes I don't. I think that for me, WWE is what I spend the most time watching. I think for most of you WWE's what you spend the most time watching. So WWE is what we're gonna spend the most time covering, but I did receive criticism that is fair. There was a story that slipped through my radar. I think it was just because of at what point in the week it happened like a story breaks on a Thursday or a Friday. By the time I get to record the next week. I may have forgotten to address it. And that's what happened with this story. A story that to me is so important and needs to be addressed on this show so much that I decided to make it this week story. The number five story of this week is the deal that Madison Square Garden has made with ring of honor. Now, look, it is unbelievable in my lifetime. And I think the lifetime of basically anyway. That's listening to this podcast. WWE has had a stranglehold on pro wrestling that comes out of Madison Square Garden, and there was at one point WCW was able to run a house show. I believe out of the theater at Madison Square Garden. I didn't get to go to that show, but it was a big deal. I mean, really for WCW it was whenever they would come to New York, it was a big deal. And that wasn't just because these are the stars from TV it was because w w e didn't really let people come from New York come into New York. WWE didn't really have competitors on that level. Come into their territory, and part of that was because look, the New York audience just preferred the WWE product. But a bigger part of that was because of the contracts that WWE had had with so many of the arenas. The biggest, I think in the most important and the strongest contract was the one they had with Madison Square Garden. I mean, nobody. Nobody. Eighty could run Madison Square Garden and WWE would run it all the time trouble started brewing when WWE decided to stop running televised shows for Madison Square Garden that it used to be a spot where you would always have your house shows and you still do. You know, maybe three or four times a year have WWE house shows at Madison Square Garden. They're always amazing. They're always great. Just a fun place to watch a house show because it's so historic, but you used to also have Ross from there. A lot of very historic Roz came from Madison Square Garden. Aleta super historic, pay per views. I'm talking about wrestlemainia one. I'm talking about wrestlemainia ten. I'm talking about wrestlemainia twenty. I'm talking about the two thousand Royal rumble. I- tons summer slim Ninety-one. Lots of pay per view. Summer slam ninety. Eight came from Madison Square Garden, but at some point. Apparently the rates to run TV to film TV and Madison Square Garden, the rental rates skyrocketed. It was after Madison Square Garden spruce the place up they skyrocketed. Apparently I haven't seen them. I don't have the paperwork in front of me, the rates that they were charging to film TV in their building, and would WWE said was, okay, we're a company that's about making money. We're a business company when I mean running TV out of your building anymore, and they really didn't. And Brooklyn became the spot, you know, and and the summer slam deals, did they had in place over what to this is like the fourth third or fourth year that they're doing an x t summer slim, raw smackdown four nights in a row that they've booked up that building. And that's a big nut for Madison Square Garden at to get now Madison Square gardens doing just fine. They got Billy Joel there every other week they got everything they need, but that's. Still. I mean, it's like come on guys. I thought we had a thing here. Madison Square Garden was loyal to WWE WWE not so much to Madison Square Garden, and I know it's not loyalty. You're taking them business. You're talking about contracts. Both parties upheld their end of the deals that they signed. However, I think it really push came to shove..

Billy Joel saw chance to solve a transportation problem is that in play tennis and it was in h in the middle of tennis court. Helipad Vance. How we arrived in Manhattan is past Wednesday with his wife, Alexis for his landmark one hundred concert at Madison Square Garden. Long son, he's sold out every show more than two million tickets. Offense anyway. What does it say to you personally, the cheer playing your hundred show here. It's a crazy life. I remember the first night I played here in nineteen seventy eight. This was like the pinnacle of my career. God him headlining at Madison Square Garden. Forty years ago in December of nineteen seventy eight Joel played his first gigs at the garden. He'd broken out the year before with his fifth album, the stranger for a kid from Long Island, what it means to be here in nineteen seventy eight. Well, this is the ark of the covenant, the high holy of holies. Mr. Joel's concert, the New York Times review, read reaffirmed his stature as craftsmanlike pop composer, but he falls short of the committed passion of great rock off. And on over these, you've been beaten up by some critics. A lot of that beating up with self-induced because I, I went to war with these guys. I didn't agree with something they wrote. I would call them out on stage that doesn't help things. Why did you go to war with them? Because they were. And the no just read is. His garden gigs at proven him right. Even some of his songs that weren't big hits in the beginning have become standard. Man, we do every night. You can't do show without doing PanAm, but the audiences singing along. They're doing a lot of the work. Yes. So when I'm doing this, I'm not actually thinking about what I'm doing. I'm listening to the audience singing going bad..
