"WTO pia two 28. And what it breaks, good morning to rich hunter, and that will TLP traffic center. Hi, good morning, dean, still working on the inner loop of the belly between the dulles toll road and Georgetown pike still bound to a single left lane to the work zone. Feed on also indicated that the outer loop express lanes are closed between the entrance and maclean there just south of Georgetown pike through Tyson's, but again, have not been able to confirm that the overhead signs say it's closed, but haven't gotten a good visual of it, so if you do see that it's closed, we'd appreciate a call if you get a chance. Now, elsewhere, if you're traveling in Maryland, south end on the bottom of a Washington park when you're one 75, still down to a single left length the work zone beyond that, nothing else in your way getting down to the belly, and even inside the beltway headed toward the district during good shape. North then on the Baltimore Washington Parkway working on the ram to go east on one 75, that ramp is blocked as a result of your diverted little further north to the exit to go west on one 75 from there you follow the post to detour to get back to eastbound one 75 to continue that way. If you're traveling on I 95 running well getting down to the capital beltway in college park two 70 south despite some foggy conditions and stretches still in pretty good shape from Frederick down to both loops of the beltway and Bethesda, and for now the belt wastes through Montgomery and prince George's county without incident or delay. "Locations are independently off. Product services pricing and hours may vary. See center for details. Good Friday, evening, the 13th of January, time now on WTO P 1138. First is always over to Ian Crawford. We start again on the Virginia beltway a very, very sluggish ride that still get the cones all set up in the roadway. I think we had been brought to a stop briefly in some ports of the line still not quite moving, especially toward the back of the line on the outer loop of the capitol, but as you come off, the legion bridge expect a lot of delays to get into and through the work zone from the George Washington memorial Parkway to the dulles toll road, single left lane once you get out of your thing all sorted out. Again, expect a lot of delays because they're still getting the barrels and cones set up in the roadway. After that, you are kosher. On the interloop of the capitol beltway, no reported delays between Alexandria and maclean in the Virginia on 66 the eastbound work was going to be after the Prince William Parkway, but before you get to the sudley road and it's going to be two right lanes to get by on the Maryland side, bell was in good shape. We did it as a crash activity in Wheaton, but I think this may be clear was on route 97, Georgia avenue, northbound, near reedy drive right near the Safeway in the Wheaton metro stop, and we were following police direction to get by. There had been crash activity in gambles and Howard county, 32 westbound after you leave I 97, heading toward one 75 to crash activity was in the roadway and we were following police ratio to get around it. There had been a reported vehicle fire, Pennsylvania avenue outbound or eastbound after woodyard road before Richie Marlborough road and again following police direction here, district travel remains quiet on the southeast Southwest freeway, D.C. two 95 and I two 95 without new reported complaints at the moment. Ready, set, goal. Join the YMCA today with a zero enrollment fee and achieve your wellness goals in the new year, visit YMCA D.C. dot org to learn more. I'm Ian Crawford. Traffic. "The Dow is now up three points, a popular Arlington bar plans a second act. I'm Jeff cable. It is three 18. And you know what happens when we hit the 8s, time for traffic and weather hears Dave. And the slowest traffic by far on the beltway right now is on the outer loop from the two 70 spur southbound jammed into Northern Virginia on the outer loop in maclean past the Georgetown pike exit. The response to the truck crash is blocking three left lanes, only one right lane getting by toward the dullest toll road on the outer loop. Opposite side of the beltway on the outer loop between two O two and 50, new crash called in on the right, hopefully drivers will get themselves over onto the right shoulder and in no time. Baltimore Washington Parkway, volume delays will cost you time between the beltways. Volume delays on 95 a little less intense, heaviest through Howard county as usual and heading to the bay bridge. It'll be slow east bound near I 97. He's found over the severn and near sandy point, but two way traffic on the westbound span means westbound delays are going to be longer and traffic is backed up to before castle Marina road on Kent island to 70. No issue is just normal slowing north of clarksburg. I 70 westbound before mount airy, a new crash reported in Virginia 95, it is summer traffic and it will be very time consuming to go south fouled across the aka Kwan and from Quantico right down to Fredericksburg and through spotsylvania county. Northbound volume delay is pretty lengthy this afternoon out of Pennsylvania into Fredericksburg and in slow stretches beyond dumfries toward the Dale City woodbridge newington and Springfield exits right on to the outer loop. "Now. I'm Jeff Gable. 5 18. Time for traffic and weather what you're looking at, Dave. Deep summer and weekend like traffic delays around the region on Monday, especially it feels more like a weekend travel delays in Virginia on I 95 southbound and woodbridge and through Stafford county, remaining heavy on the outer loop from Tyson's toward merrifield. And from van dorn to the Wilson bridge, slow on the italo maclean of Bethesda three 55 pass Connecticut in between university and New Hampshire avenue. Police are stopped with one on the shoulder of the outer loop there, but not a big impact. Two 70 northbound, no delays from the beltway to Frederick, no rush hour again, summers can be easier on some roads, like two 70 north. But southbound passed 85 Frederick the crash did cause some slow southbound traffic and volumes can be pretty high southbound on two 70 at the end of weekends. The crash by now past 85 though, that should be on the shoulder or clear. Baltimore Washington park way slow and stretches of summer traffic, 95 better through Howard county, no delays at the bay bridge, Springdale crash on 7 O four king highway, northbound near 92nd avenue. Chevy Chase, east west highway, still closed east of Connecticut avenue at brookville road for emergency utility work, district, three 95, southeast southwest freeway equally slow in and out bound to and from the 14th street bridge. "The traffic center. Quiet ride on the beltway so far in Virginia between Alexandria and maclean, westbound 66 inside the beltway near circa more street still with the right lane block for the crash in response on team. You can still take the eggs and rant to sycamore street once you get around the cones after that west belt on 66, leaving the beltway headed toward nutley street, the right wing gets by the work zone, so watch out for that. Maybe picked up pretty soon, but not yet. Otherwise, 66 west before route 50 in fairfax, the right lane gets by the words on there if you're traveling in centerville, northbound 28 after 66, two left lane gets you by the work zone, traffic coming off of westbound 66 has to merge early to watch out for that. Otherwise, if you're on the GW Parkway northbound between Reagan national airport and the beltway, you understand the right lane is blocked for a mobile work zone taking place today. No issues on I 95 or I three 95 between Fredericksburg and the 14th street bridge in either direction, looking pretty good on the beltway in Maryland through Montgomery and prince George's counties or problems when I 95 of the BW Parkway between the two beltways would 50 going across the bay bridge clear for now with three lanes west and two lanes east, no problems as you make your way between Annapolis and the beltway and inside the beltway through Chevrolet in either direction, traveling southbound to 70 clear, leaving Frederick headed toward Rockville but keep in mind through Gaithersburg before I three 70 in San Juan highway, Detroit two right lanes get you by the emergency work zone. It follows, of course, the domestic abuse act of last year, which updated the definition of it to recognize a range of behaviors such as psychological and emotional abuse as such, as well as establishing children as victims too. Rachel maclean is the safeguarding minister good morning. Good morning. Thanks for joining us today. Plenty to talk about, but the register of domestic abusers. This is the headline many have picked up on. Is that going to happen and tell us a bit how it may work? Yeah, so thanks for having me on and this is a really huge piece of work and it does come on the back of obviously the landmark domestic abuse act. So this is the next stage and you're right to focus on the register, which is an important part of our plans. What we need to do now is we need to look very carefully and work through with our partners, obviously, the police, local authorities, and other operational partners to make sure that the proposals are workable and sensible and actually protect women against the highest harm perpetrators. So that's what we're going to be doing following on from publishing the plan..

Now he's getting more and more pissed off and then he starts to make a move steve away from his seat towards the announcer. Us buddy you step right in front. Oh no dude no no. No no no no no. You're not you're not gonna talk to this guy you're going to let it go and then the game's gonna end and you're going to say nothing. Not only that okay. You're not certainly stevie if anything apparently in hockey with with with the crazy parents in hockey a lot of the coaches will if you have any complaints about your kid okay. Are you got any issue about what i'm doing. It never comes up during the game okay. It's something we talk about after right. That's the going that that's the standard steve. In all that stuff. Okay they they. All of these meetings ahead of time with the parents right. That's not stay. Are they gotta parent meetings to tell the parents how to behave so yeah and so it. A pa announcer become color analyst. My voice as funny but sorta stepping. Stay in your lane. Really you know if you're a pa announcer. You're saying jerome. Foul twenty one you know. That's the extent of it You getting into this sarcastic. Color analyst analysis and. I don't blame lebron james for being miffed by it because it is an as he can he can take it all day but it is a bit of a shot in his son. Because you're really implying there that you know daddy's a helping pull your strings whether it be in your career or in the game itself and i would take offense to that but i probably wouldn't have handled the way. Lebron did i thought. I thought it'd be really good if the announcer went further. Steve with other stuff you know. And he goes and young. Kevin galardo okay gets whistled down there for committing that fell because his mother plowed the referee. No well there you go no no. We're bringing it on just to keep things in perspective. Lebron isn't that a little you know. Now you can get an idea that's Drunk you probably could got more across if you were if you did it. After the fact like lebron he knows at that stage. He's walking out in the middle of a basketball game. You knows that every cell phone is trained on the stage picking up the audio and everything so you can only go so far. I think he could have had more effective conversation. Maybe a little more threatening tone to do it privately after the game when everybody's gone right peewee a word a word you try that shit again. I will end. you sure. sure sure. Yeah all right. Let's take a time out of the program note. We've got one more thing. We wanted to tackle as we go. "On. Give him a break. And i don't think it's ron maclean. That made that call. Ron maclean's in his nature to go pitt bull in a situation like that if he can. Because we've seen it in the past. That's that used to be must see tv. It got really uncomfortable. In fact because ron maclean pushed and pushed and you could see how irritated gary bettman was getting with that. And so i think it's gotten to a point where batman will say okay on but i need to know what are the questions going to be one of the topics we're gonna cover here and i know i've no doubt he's getting the full list and i have no doubt it's because the nhl and rodgers have have a broadcast partnership. It's a partnership it's not that and that is what is racing journalism lines so if you want a really objective interview you've got to go get somebody conducting the interview who is not affiliated with the nhl and sports net is. Well here's the other thing. Stevie first of all. I think those things should stay out of the press okay. Things were accusations are happening. Allegations are happening. The the investigation isn't complete. All that sort of stuff. I think is a private matter. I think it's really a private matter. So that's why. I think you're i think you're i got a jump in there. I mean you've got this Just a reset that chicago story. This was a chicago blackhawks employees. I believe coach back in two thousand ten the year. They wanna cup. This guy went on and went to jail later on after that and what the accusation was in two thousand ten from at least one player. was A sexual assault and all the players knew about it. They they banded together. They talked to one other coach. And that coach was gonna go to the full coaching staff. And the executive and say okay. This is what's happening with this employee. Apparently that meeting happened. And according to several people who were interviewed with blackhawks organization there was a sweeping under the rug of all that information. And not only that. There are accusations that the blackhawks actually gave this guy a letter of reference. He was let go but given a letter of reference for his next job. He sexually assaulted a player on another team. I think at a younger level than the nhl. So when you have a scenario like that Right now this seems to be a sweeping under the rug overall with the media at large. I don't know what's going on there to me is more important story in the nhl right now. Then something like that. One of your most high profile teams is trying to sweep something like that under the rug. Allegedly what are you gonna get under the commissioner steve. What are you gonna get same thing. You did at the start of the final. Because he was asked to better the start of the final and gave the standard answer of We know chicago's got an investigation going and we'll see how that goes and then decide if we should get involved or not at that point jay. Which is. I don't know that the chicago blackhawks are the people that should be conducting this investigation. The nhl should may get involved to some degree with some independent body looking at this thing because it is a pretty ugly story. Yeah but anyway. Go go easy folks freak out on ron maclean. Astronaut is not you know..

"Those two guys always have an interview and it's often very contentious or has been in the past this one if you can recall james. The first time with one year three kids that they picked up a baseball bat. And you were. You know you're you're you're thrown like a wiffle ball at them really close and really lightly underhanded those that that was about the nature in which ron was asking questions last night and most people were upset. I should say most people some were upset on social media today that he fully ignored the chicago. Blackhawks scandal that's going on right now and It was probably one of those things. I think where they had a handshake agreement. It is the broadcaster. We all know that. Rogers sports net has the nhl rights. There is a partnership there. And i think in twenty twenty one. The lines of now been fully blurred between partnership with league and journalism. And if you think. Ron maclean is the only guy that would You know maybe pass up that opportunity. I think anybody from sports net. Who was in. That chair would be in the same mode. I'd say the same thing of tsn still had the rights. I think it's ridiculous. Were where people are blaming blaming ron maclean for not bringing up what that that whole thing on sexual assault allegations in chicago. I don't blame. Ron for not bringing that up at all. I don't blame him at all. Bring what do you want him to do. What is they've bettman's gonna say what i you know. It's just i get it. I get it when he sits down to look at the interview go. No we're leaving that off right now. We're into the stanley cup final. The people are you know we've been through a really tough time with covid. So i'm not i'm not gonna pick this time and place to talk to gary bettman about a about this deal in chicago Because if he's going to do that. Steve and you know it's something that started a while ago. Then bring up a whole bunch of shit then bring up a whole bunch of stuff okay. Let's go back. And talk about the guy in calgary when i started the the stories of coaches kicking players and all that stuff. So i don't get you gotta be kidding me. People ron maclean is not needs to ask the hard hitting nah. That's not ron maclean's deal. That's not ron maclean's deal interview on national tv. Let someone else do that. if they want to. Sit down with batman. Give them a heads up on the thing i i get it i get it. I completely understand why he wouldn't do it. And i. i certainly don't agree with people. "It's a seven year contract. That turner has now. And so i guess they got some other guys to. They've already linked up. Kenny albert as their play by play guy eddie olczyk in their ray ferraro is also going to be part of it. I don't know if that means he's going to cut back on his tsn duties or not. Brian boucher in. There's also an analyst and leah hextall female play by play analyst. So they've got a nice little stable already early in the game here but Yeah i'd say wayne gretzky he would probably be giving ron maclean a break today saying he probably shouldn't say that and always ri- steak you know cooler with that stuff. Don't let it happen again and we move forward and i think what you'll probably get steve. He until now at the same time gretz gets it. He understands he under. He's always understood his role. He's always understood what's what's expected of him. What's expected of people. What what the fans deserve you know. He he understands that better than anyone. He's always had a great knack. Great street smarts. Great you know. He always has so. I think what he'll be able to do. Steve is he'll he'll be able to point out mistakes. He'll glaring mistakes turnovers and stuff like that. But i think you're you're going to see it done in a way that that he'll explain why that mistake happened You know 'cause we all look at it and go you know the the overtime winner in fourth game edmonton and winnipeg giveaway. Yeah it was a guy trying to throw it around desperation times anyway. It was giveaway guy. Picked it up ripped in scored the goal. I think wayne would point point out that you know yes. That's a turnover. But here's why here's what the guy was trying to do. Here's what he's thinking but you wouldn't want to that again. That's kind of how. I hear the tone of stuff going with wing yup. He's not going to bury anyone personally. Guarantee guarantee he's never you know he's he's not he's not going to say this guy should be on the fourth line and not the he might. I don't know he might tune in for sure. Big challenge for them those stevie. No i agree. It's a big challenge. And i don't know that i know what to expect at this stage. He will have to go down that that milbury lane a little. A johnny miller thing not be afraid to say the odd negative thing where it where it's needed because that's you know that's kind of what the viewer demands and Certainly the doors wide open. And i mean the paycheck speaks for itself the superstar name the biggest name in the history of hockey. That's huge for tnt to acquire. That said it's not an automatic that it'll be a success. I think about joe montana for example as an nfl analyst at just ten out he was not good so there will have to be Yeah they'll have to be some performance from wayne gretzky if that job is to be something that he stays with long-term so we wish obviously you know what they're looking for stevie because of the recent experience over the last..

Even though i know that's not going to be popular in some ports. You know here's what else i think. Steve people have to empathize. You say with with ron maclean. And they've got to begin to understand okay when you have a job. Like he has as a broadcaster on a national network. Okay on a highly rated show. Okay and and ron's been doing it for years and years and years. Okay fun gig. He's always said that the experiences he's had It's right in his kitchen okay. It's right with his photographic memory and You know and his love for hockey and his experiences from coming from small towns berta you know i. It's been a great ride for that guy. Okay but people don't understand and the reason it's been a great ride and why people love ron maclean is because he makes it look like it's piece of cake. Okay he makes it look like just you know the stuff just flows out of his mouth Lava and he's really at ease with the with the gate. That's the way it appears right. You don't as you know. Steve you don't last that long if you if you if you can't do that okay if you can present that way What what people got to begin to respect is how how. You're not allowed to say so many things so many things how you're not allowed to to let the people here the voice in your head. You know 'cause. I've always said that was the great thing about t. Gore's i just got to salem in my back in the day right and but they got on begin to understand that. It's a really hard job. It's a really hard job. Have to go on air and not react. Certain ways that you normally would and you know. Keep the ship moving and you know where you're where you're riding it. You know your your steering the bus here that that job that he has. And we'll start today with the ron maclean story from tuesday in the broadcast of the leafs game. And that's a series. That's been kind of disappointing as far as entertainment goes just as an aside ron maclean during the intermission and yes going for a play on words or joke of some kind in a conversation with kevin be exa and in a comment he directed toward said you have a photo of a guy with his tarp off your definitely positive for something and tarps off is a reference to going shirtless so a lot of people have gone and jump to the conclusion that it was a homophobic remark. There people on social media calling for ron mcclain's firing which i really think is excessive. But i don't know what do you think james. Yeah it's a good topic. I've always said. Because you know this has been in the forefront for a while right along time now where where it's it's ramped up okay sensitivity To to you know certain cultures stevie to you know to social injustice You know to the gay community Two women are that that that's been wrapped up in in in the last several years right and and it's good right. And so we've had some discussions about that too so i've always said what's the intention of it steve. What's the guy's intention when he says it and my guess is. There's no ill intention there. I really don't think there is so What what effect does that have. Stevie what what effect does that have on on people when he says that and to me. It's a joke. And i mean literally literally i think. He's cracking a joke. I know is and so does everybody else but on the other hand steve what what is happening people go. Okay this stuff is not to be made fun of anymore. Okay enough with the jokes of gotta move forward and all that stuff and so there's a there's a part of me that says yeah okay okay. And that's coming from me steve i. I've done a lot of things. I've done far worse than that. I've been to a few of them for sure but we the nice thing is. We've got ron maclean's words on twitter today. Put out a statement and he said first and foremost..

The difference between the two parties was a difference of one point two two percent ahead. Here's what blew me away though. According to a piece written by. Paul wells for maclean's last month. It's twenty twenty one call the mc l. thirty find and the team finished third and the twenty twenty constructors championship. And it's sayings powell. Thanks to trump as well as getting don ricardo as replacement for karla signs genius with all that change comes expectation and pressure and in this remark podcast recording. We'll be discussing what we learned from town. Today i'm joined sports f jonathan able to sports reports late smith and our technical editor jacob. Select and jake. I'm coming to you. I i question today what are the main takeaway technical changes that you've spotted on the mci five if he changes. There's a lot similar As we expected because twenty twenty cars we know very similar to was twenty. Twenty one calls with regards. Take the carry chassis for covid. Nineteen times Being still prevalent as well so does a few little changes Obviously we know that as the switch to mercedes and that's how big knock on effect to the rear of the car As we know every team has been lifted. Two tokens which they may spend on a certain area of the cost Areas requests takings to to develop The rea- off the chassis takes too so maclean seems to suspend its allowance on developing the era of the of the car. Try get as much bang free stock as it can because switching to the gym obviously if it can improve things there as well then. That's us what he's got a day. let's frontino which is relatively the same. As last year they introduce the. If you like mercedes star news In practicing magellan the carried forward. And i think part of the thinking behind that was because obviously that requires a cross strokes to change to to change in that requires tokens and so if they could do it right in the middle of the season than they wouldn't have to spend it going forward this season Hit them a little bit hard in when when the new updates first came out but they got it together. The end of the season. The place constructors championships. Obviously these changes date eventually bath fruits. But i think the key thing is of mentioned. The tokens have been spent on the rear of the chassis. The mercedes engine is not running power unit. It's a different architecture. It's a different layout and they've got to know. Just consider the mounting points on the chassis but cooling requirements as well and these will have a knock on effect on how the chassis is developed. So that's something they've had to consider. I think the most obvious showing if that is the change. The shape in the air intake before it isn't massively exciting. Last year. Had something of a darth vader mask kind of design which was is incredibly strange design. If you like is a lot more conventional this time it falls in line with what mercedes has every power unit has different cooling requirements Different architectures mentioned in the so getting the right cooling the right parts and the right amounts of cooling is is ideal so that's why they've gone to not direction obviously facing them say he's power unit into the back as well. That's that's something of a change so you'll the body sculpting in different way if you look to reaching point williams and mercedes as well last year. You'd see they'd have sleeping design on on the top of the sideboards and that's just to simply allow to drop down and on top of the floor and if you build you allowing high pressure that's to the floor. And if you building that pressure difference you're getting the disease to work harder now as we know another knock on effect of these regulations is the diffuse the as less potent this time around. They've had fifty millimeters lopped off the internal fences and so getting the to work as hard as it can is absolutely vital and say trying to get that clean athletes the back of the car. That's going to be so so important. In this situation to the regulations and other thing that we denote as well as the flows of changed mclaren has given us a glimpse of what it might look like by. Think that keeping their cards close to the chest on that one if you look at it. It's very very pads down. Let's say it's it's quite simplistic and we saw designs in practice the end of last year. That were a lot more complex. It'd be fat to say so again. Yeah the keeping something that keeping that caused cliffs that chest on that one because this might be an area of intense development of such but if team has a really good idea for that and is able to make up any ground. They've lost because they've lost of the all of these toys at the rear. End the slots the cuts if they can make up with what they do have available to them. It'd be a very lucrative area of development. So i think they're trying to sort of you know play expectations down on that front and just at the rear as well. The railing end. Play is brand new. If you'd seen that curved streak design something that has invented which is something. We don't say a whole lot on this on this channel but something they invent since one thousand nine hundred thousand. Something red bull ran with as well in in twenty twenty. So it's an interesting inclusion. it'd be interesting to see how how that works with the rest of the car. So there's a few to summarize a few new bits that we can see. I think there are more to come. By as a continuation. Looks very very sensible development of mclaren pops what we were

With no Keystone XL pipeline, whats Albertas Plan B?
"Jordan heath rawlings. This is the big story. Jason marcus off is the alberta correspondent for maclean's magazine. He joins us to try to explain what happens now. Hello jason wish me luck so in the couple of weeks now. Since joe biden has taken office and immediately cancelled the keystone excel permit. How his albert reacted. Not well as could be. Expected is opposed the way i'd put it. You know jason kenney got elected with a three word slogan not a phrase three word slogan jobs economy pipelines pipelines was the big punctuation point on that. And it's been a big issue for help out bird government and the economy for a long time that we don't have this big glut of oil sands and oil were producing and nowhere really to shit or no way to ship it out of there. That's been a big drag on alpern awale prices and benjamin prices for quite a while now keystone excel has been in the works for basically a decade now uh since they applied for this project as transcanada energies into long that they're no longer called transplanted called tc energy. Canada became less of an on vogue term to use in the names and this this has become the gun of the poster child. The original poster child for environmental activism and push back against oil industry pipelines The americans have been pushing back on this south from the left for quite a while. obama killed in two thousand fifteen. He decided to not allow permit. Donald trump brought it back in two thousand seventeen and it was no surprise. Almost anybody that Biden was going to kill it in in twenty twenty one Once he got nauseated and yet it was portrayed as a major disappointment and huge letdown for the government and to some extent for canada. Yeah i was gonna ask if obama killed this thing once already And it's really unpopular with the american left. Why didn't it seem like we were more prepared for this. You know i played a clip In the intro of kenny reacting on the day of biden's inauguration but surely as soon as it became clear he won. This was coming down the pipeline. There was an optimism and almost. I'd say an idealism about how a biden administration might act. People knew well the the history and the baggage that this project had that it was killed by obama when joe biden was the vice president of course and this had become this iconic push for the environmental movement did it it had that totemic status and yet there were people within the canadian government and especially the alberta government who thought they crashed an argument Through which this would work and that had several layers to it one Was the fact that there were many union. Jobs in america And in canada on the go for this there were was going to produce jobs at a time when jobs are scarce and these economies need these construction industrial and infrastructure jobs and they were hoping that would appeal to the lunch bucket. Union leanings of joe biden in his administration. There was also an argument that this was not the same project and the ever loyal sent throughout the same oil sands that they were in twenty fifteen when this project was rejected by obama or before twenty fifty back when there was much less of an issue of oil sands cleaning up their act like there is now out the oil sands have worked their best to lower the carbon intensity and the carbon footprint of their projects and they were going Tc energy the company that was going to build. This pipeline was talking about making their project. Carbon zero carbon neutral net zero through various means the actual pipeline construction itself. Not the oil flowing through it and there was also gonna talk Giving indigenous which oppose this quite often in the states Some equity stake in it so there were various ways. The canadians albertans thought they could thread the needle and make this an appeal peeling project. Make it some kind of package. Deal with other green initiatives that That canada and biden would go through jointly but the legacy of this project the baggage of this project mistakes the politics surrounding this whole saga from obama to trump to biden Made it an easy win for For biden to kill despite all the positives that this project could have given

"According to multiple media reports michigan's former governor and other officials will be charged in relation to the flint water crisis seven years ago despite possible criminal charges. A lot of residents still question. Whether those officials will be held accountable. Michigan radio steve carmody reports. Nearly seven years ago government leaders here push the button that switch the city of flint drinking water source from detroit's water system to the flint river flag. The intent was to save money. The result was a complete disaster treated river water damage to pipes which then released lead and other contaminants into the city's drinking water eighteen months later. The water was switched back but the damage was done. Blood lead levels soared in young children. People were forced to use bottled water for drinking and washing clothes. State and federal officials failed the families of flint. Snyder was not among the fifteen state and local government officials face criminal charges for their handling of the crisis half of them pled guilty to lesser charges in exchange for no jail time and in two thousand nineteen michigan's new attorney general dropped charges against the remaining defendants citing problems with the original investigation. The investigation seemed over until yesterday when the associated press reported that several former government officials including former governor snyder. We'll be facing new charges. If that happens. Legal experts say it would be difficult case for prosecutors. Peter hammer teaches law at wayne state university in detroit. He says despite possible difficulty getting convictions. It's important to bring charges especially in an era where we're living where people are not being held accountable. This could be an important statement about the significance of the rule of law and that not even the highest public official in the state is going to get off. Scot-free a spokeswoman for former governor. Rick snyder calls the reports of impending charges a public relations smear campaign saying that if brought they would be meritless since during eighteen months of foul-smelling dirty tap water that made them sick flint residents have demanded justice and compensation a us district court. Judge is expected to decide in the coming days if she will give preliminary approval to a massive settlement agreement resolving most of the thousands of outstanding lawsuits last year. The state of michigan announced. It struck a deal with attorneys representing flint residents to pay six hundred million dollars into a settlement fund. A few months later the city of fled a local hospital and an engineering firm agreed to chip in another forty one million dollars. Nearly eighty percent of that money would be set aside for plaintiffs. who were young children or minors. During the crisis they are the ones most at risk for suffering long-term lead related health problems. But growing course of critics say it's not enough a group of flint. Civic and religious leaders led by pastor. John maclean gathered monday outside. The city's water plant to express concern about the settlement. We believe that the proposed settlement curly allocated is just as disrespectful as injury-cause by the water crisis tragedy itself in addition to tens of thousands of residents. There aren't the lawyers lots of them. More than one hundred forty took part in a zoom hearing with the judge last month. This is part of the challenge facing the judge how to divide a large pool of money without leaving some feeling victimized again. Flint's mayor says it's important. His residents have a belief in justice and developments. This week may help with that for npr news. I'm steve carmody in flint.

Elijah McClain's parents sue Colorado police over his death
"The family of Elijah MacLean has filed a federal civil rights suit against the city of Aurora, Colorado, You'll remember he was the unarmed 23 year old who died in police custody last summer. Colorado Public Radio's Alison Sherry reports on the latest developments in the case. The incident that led to Elijah McLane's death started with a call to 901 reporting a quote, sketchy looking individual. Police stopped McLane, who is African American. As he was walking home from a convenience store. McClain's family lawyer, Mari Newman, a rural police officers stopped, Elijah grabbed him tackled him to the ground and over the course of the next 18 minutes inflicted multiple types of excessive force against him. McCain wasn't suspected of any crime. In the altercation that followed. Officers put him into karate holds and kept him pinned to the ground. Paramedics who arrived on the scene, then injected him with ketamine, a sedative. His family's lawyers allege the dose was too much for his £143 body size. He went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance, and MacLean was taken off life support several days later. Maclaine's death got renewed attention this spring in the wake of the George Floyd death in Minnesota and became a rallying cry both in Colorado and elsewhere in the country for police

Elijah McClain's mother says officers "murdered" my son
"Longer protesters and demonstrators and activists continue fighting for black lives. The more stories of police killings of black people seem to be coming to light and pressure is now mounting for a new investigation. Into the death of Elijah McCain. It happened after an encounter with three officers last August in Aurora, Colorado. Go to the family. The 23 year old was out buying ice tea when somebody called 911 claiming that MacLean was wearing a ski mask and quote acting weird. His family says, Yeah, he was wearing a mask, but it was to deal with social anxiety. Within 15 minutes, He was put in a chokehold and then injected with a powerful sedative. CBS's David Begnaud has the story. Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop. I have the right stuff because you're being suspicious. Rely on I'm going whole relax, or I'm going to have to change this situation. The district attorney investigating the case says that Elijah McClane dismissed the officers requests for him to stop. The 23 year olds family says he was just walking home. He was listening to music. When Aurora, Colorado police approached him last August, the D A. Says McLane was carrying a plastic bag when police tried to pat him down and he refused. He's then heard pleading with the police as they tackle him and use a choke hold on him. Paramedics later arrived at the scene. A medic gave McClane ketamine to sedate him. McLane was taken to the hospital. Three days later, he was pronounced brain dead. 10 months after McLane's death, more than two million people have signed a petition calling on Colorado officials to fire the three officers involved. So far, the Aurora Police Department has declined. CBS News is request for comment. Dave Young is the one who decided not to charge the officers were the actions of the officers justified legally. Yes, Mr Young. Do you believe there was a moment in this where the officers could have de escalated a situation? Absolutely. 100%. They could've done a 1,000,000 things different didn't need to die on and the fact that he died does not warrant the basis for criminal charges in the body camera video cops or heard saying that MacLean tried to take one of their guns. He went for his gun. Mari Newman represents McClain's family. Don't you think if you really had grab someone's gun, we would see fingerprints ended the lifted from the gun. Did you find any evidence that corroborates the officer who said he reached for the gun? I had no evidence to cut. Predict that Shin in McLean is Elijah's mother. They? They're bullies with badges. He wanted to help people. He was a massage therapist. He not only heal others that he killed himself. He was able to accept love give love various forms. According to the district attorney's report, the medical examiner was unable to determine a cause of death. It is important to note that walking around with a ski mask is not illegal, and when you go back to the 9 11 call, the caller didn't say that Elijah did anything illegal. He said. Hey, there's a guy wearing a mask. He kind of is waving his hand. Seems a little strange. You might want to check it out. He says He might be a good guy might be a bad guy. When the police responded instead of observing. Instead of watching hanging back for a bit, the police moved in immediately to stop him. And everything went self from there.

Is history at a turning point? How can we meet the moment?
"Now is the covid nineteen pandemic continues to grow, so are the parallels being drawn between it and another deadly virus that struck the globe more than a century ago, talking about the Spanish flu. Guys. We've been taking a look at some of the video from nineteen sixty eight. There's a lot of pieces of video that look very similar to what we're seeing today. Implementing the images and emotions coming out of Minneapolis too familiar to what happened right here in Ferguson Missouri in two thousand fourteen George Floyd arrest on a Minneapolis street corner, and his frantic pleas for help have given rise to one of the most turbulent periods in recent American history. The question that I can't stop asking myself. How does this all and You may have heard. At various points this year that we are living history right now. The truth is we're always living history. It's just that some of us can afford to ignore it until it boils over. But when racism and police brutality, and the rage that comes in response to that are laid bare for the world to see. In the middle of a pandemic and martial law is threatened. And nobody gets to look away. Everyone wants to know what happens next. Do, we even have a historical precedent for what's happening in America and around the world right now. What is the larger context of how we arrived at this moment? What are we missing when we watch people discuss it on. Cable News. And what needs to happen now? But does each of US need to do? For this to be a moment that changes the world for the better. That's still possible. I'm Jordan Rawlings, and this is the big story. Andre Demise is a writer and journalist, a contributing editor at Maclean's and a Nathanson fellow in history at York University. He is one of the smartest guests. We ever have on this podcast hi Andre. How's it going toward? It's going about as well as it can more importantly, how are you? doing my best I'm trying to reduce stress as much as I can by hanging out with my children and you know. Occasionally occasionally seeing partner but we're both in school. We've both got tons of homework were both busy plus jobs and everything else so yeah, we're even busier than before. The whole lockdown happened. Figure that and now you're spending this week with white people like me, asking you to please explain the historical context of this well I mean yeah, yeah, I am spending a lot of time explaining shift away, people. I mean I all. I can say I sincerely. Thank you for it. you know I? Just I find you incredibly smart and able to help me. learn some stuff from this. Thanks for taking the time Oh. Stop stuttered. Stop your flattery. I'm about to Leeann as I can plan. Why don't you just start by telling me while you watch everything? That's been happening this past week. What's going through your head? People say things like we've been through worse or we've been here before, and I have to ask the question. When when when of we've been here before we've been here before. Quote Unquote in nine eighteen during the Spanish flu pandemic. We've been here. Nine, hundred nineteen during the May Day riots and during red summer. We've been here before in nineteen sixty eight. But. My question is when when is all this happened at the same time? This is not this is unprecedented. My. Question is what is supposed to look like when when it's all over when the dust settles. Because at some point, there's going to be a change of some kind. Throughout history what happens in the course of a popular uprising that moves to straight up volt. The two methods that the ruling class can use. To try and tamp it down. One is use of force. This is where the Jimmy breaks down. This is where the state has to reveal as violence. And come out against the people with arms, or can try placating the people you can try it for example, the Civil Rights Act. It can try the declaration of the rights. It can try any number of mechanisms. To make that, the populace still has some faith in the state, but what? This looks like I don't know that there's anything to placate like there's I. Don't know that there's any mechanism. The state can try to convince people that social contract is worth upholding. That's the thing that keeps going through my head. Is You know what kind of concession can be made universally across? You know the entire United States that would actually mollify the anger I do know some of the answers to those questions I do know. That and this is something that I've been talking about over the last few years. That capitalism depends on racism to be able to reproduce and propagate itself. It's just plain fact If you beat Donald Harassed, who is a former economist Stanford also happens to be the father of Kamla Harris the former presidential candidate. But apparently they didn't. They didn't really have much of a relationship, but throughout American history. The the use of Racist promises the promising of white rages. what's been described as racial republicanism by scholars like David. What that does is incentivize the white working class against their black peers. It has the white working class essentially the. Generates like we are the only people that deserve to have. Rights. Everybody else is a on a cast below us. And until that cycle is abolished until we move away from a system of capital that accumulates the value of people's Labor and the crews it to a few select people. And then spreads out the rewards among certain other people, and then makes promises to certain people. Until that cycle is broken. I'm afraid we're going to be seeing this for the rest of our lives. I mean you're a fellow in history what? have. We seen that even close to like this in the past that ended with concessions. You have to go back very far. I mean you can. You can look at for example I mean not. Bolivia has been taken over in ashes coup. But if you look at Bolivia for example, the the presidency of evil, Morales and the Movement for socialism in Bolivia, lifted thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people out of out of poverty. It increased literacy rates incorporated indigenous eighty into the broader society. You had the the coca farmers. The the coca does I their their practices and their agricultural methods were incorporated into the broader nation. So that you didn't have eight of. The United States rating forms and burning crops. You headed that this is this is a a plants, but this is also a way of life that is valid, and the fact that it's been twisted into a normal trade has nothing to do with the people that originated the practice, so look at Bolivia for example like that. That was up until very recently and experiments in creating a broader. Social Democracy that was more inclusive and helped marginalized people, so

The Big Story
A mine vanishes, a court rules, and Alberta vs. Ottawa gets nastier
"There's no way to solve an energy issue in Canada right now without making some part of this country very very angry and now that the price of oil no longer guarantees a huge payoff in return for that anger. Companies are wondering if it's even worth attempting new projects tech resources announcing it's what's wrong. Its application for the frontier project. This comes just hours. After the Alberta government announced it struck a deal with to northern Alberta first nations. Of course you also can't just walk away from an energy project in Canada today without some people also getting very very angry but at least they won't be angry you. There is absolutely no doubt that this decision was taken in large part because of regulatory uncertainty and endless delays created by the national government by now. No one should be shocked to learn that. There's a lot of resentment of the federal government in Alberta. It's always been this way. It feels like it's getting worse and this time. Alberta probably has a point whatever side of the debate over climate policy versus energy policy. You might said on. It's clear that there's no big framework when it comes to approving or denying energy projects like the one tech has walked away from these projects seem right now to be handled on a case by case basis in Canada. Really continue to do business that way and if it does how will companies like tech choose which projects they push or wet and what comes home for the province of Alberta without a mine. They were counting on for thousands of jobs. Are we reaching a tipping point in the ever? Frayed relationship between the province and Canada's capital or at least the government currently sets there. I'm Jordan Heath Rawlings. This is the big story Jason Marcus off the Albert correspondent for Maclean's and also occasionally for US I Jason. Hello. Why don't you start for Ontarians and East coasters? Maybe everybody who hasn't had quite so much of an economic stake in this by just Sketching out what is tech resources. And what was I? Guess the Frontier Project Tech Resources Everybody should remember is actually not an oil company using its well companies who develop oil sands but this is actually a mining company. Their specialty is coal mines other mineral mines. They had dabbled a bit in oil sands being junior partner in one project and on this one they were trying to propose this one. All on its own This would have been an oil sands mine up quite far north of Fort mcmurray the most remote from the actual city of Fort mcmurray North East Alberta and this was one of the big classic mining projects where they basically dig up the muck the oil sands muck and refine it into `bitumen and keep refining it and keep refining until it eventually becomes oil. That's the classic oil says project. A lot of it has projects that had been developed in the last Five six years have been smaller projects where they just shoot a bunch of Stephen Chemicals and minerals into the oil sands well and dig it up. Those are smaller projects. This is going to be a big mega project. Two hundred and sixty thousand barrels a day at full completion twenty point six billion dollars of to construct this project of course though it was very hypothetical because what they needed to develop a beggar project was around seventy seventy five dollars barrel oil right now. We're at fifty. We habit around fifty four quite a long time and they needed pipeline. You know ones are coming. But it's not clear that there wouldn't necessarily be capacity if Trans Mountain and other projects don't come to be and they needed another partner to get this done big oil sands company or oil player to help them develop and finance this project and over the last five years we've been talking about companies leaving the oil sands. Nobody WANTS TO INVEST. Because it's high risk no intense carbon footprint Very controversial projects. So it was always very unlikely that this project might have ever been built. We were always debating hypothetical emissions hypothetical jobs but in Alberta of course people are very excited by those hypothetical jobs right but what killed it. Finally this week. Oh a few things. Different things killed it. I would be The decision pointed had Facing staring in the face Cabinet was supposed to It's deadline was this week whether it would approve the project reject the project. Or maybe give it some kind of deferral or delay and that's the cabinet in Ottawa. That's the at the Federal Cabinet Justin Trudeau's cabinet and for many reports a lot of cabinet ministers and certainly backbench. Mp's very split on this project. There was a lot of opposition a lot of these. Mp's are from you know. None of them are from Alberta. They're all from other provinces mostly in the east and those are places where there are not tantalized by this prospect of Seven thousand potential oil sands jobs. They think more about the the natural disturbance in an area that's actually in a bison range Very close to a UNESCO World Heritage Site National Park the Wood Buffalo National Park up on the border with North West territories and they would have seen this potential for four point one megatonnes of carbon emissions in the future Per year as we're looking to whoever deuce our carbon emissions normally and this is what tech and this is what other governments were used to This approval process cabinet decision. Making process was pretty much a rubber stamp if the technical review and the federal and provincial panels say this projects okay with conditions. That's what the federal government said liberal and Conservative in the past. They all approved it. That's why we have so many oil sands projects and a whole bunch more that are approved but not built yet. It's different times are shifting. The public public attention is shifting. Investor mood is shifting and so it's quite natural that a liberal government would shift with those times and have be hesitant on whether to approve this or not with this hesitation. Clearly tech thought. Maybe we're not going to get this. Maybe our lease is going to have a big fat rubber no stamp on it instead of a rubber stamping. Yes go ahead. So they decided rather than risk losing this project they pulled it. So what would be the rationale behind that as opposed to just letting the process play one way or another? I mean there are a couple theories out there. One is that a company wants to save face. It wasn't one all of its good intentions. All of its Its efforts to project a good project with good environmental credentials. All of its support for first nations in the region. They don't want all that to be faced with rejection. That's kind of a corporates much That basically what you do is not good enough for the federal government even though this is the defacto defacto message like that still. That's that's the reason you want to put this over. Check this out on your own terms. You want to be able to say what you say rather than Ottawa. Having its say on you another possible Rationale for this is that what are the reports that there is that they were feeling they were feeling that this was going to be delayed and they've sunk so much money into this more than a billion dollars into this planning and consultation process thus far project is valued at basically nothing in the markets according to a good global mail report haunt from their mining reporter and they just want to cut their losses another theory and this is one that I are partially hold. Is that what they had? Right now wasn't oil sands lease. They had a piece of land up in Northeast. Alberta with a proposed mine on it if they had approved mine on it approved mine project on this land. It's worth a bit where he can sell it to likely to find somebody else to take it forward. If this mining comedy didn't want to take this forward if they have rejected mine on it. This land is good for Bison and nature and not much else if they have if they have a hold withdrawn agreement on this proposal on this land. There's still the potential for somebody. Maybe someday in the future under some different government or some of their different perspective with a different proposal maybe with different terms to pick this up again so it could potentially salvage value in this lease. Although I would suggest that it's probably pretty nil at this point so I know you said that in Alberta it's kind of been a hypothetical For a longtime but there were at least a lot of hypothetical jobs in revenue there. So how has Albert or maybe just the leaders in Alberta because I don't WanNa pay the whole province With the brush but how is the Alberta government been taking the news the Alberta government like much you know is very aligned with a lot of the investor community in Alberta oil sands sector and a lot of the populace in oil producing regions like Fort mcmurray? And at least it was the idea that the there could be jobs in the future oil sands rests on two separate separate entities. I mean the whole soil says boo was to its operations actually producing oil sands and growth expanding oil sands and actually the big. The big source of jobs are in constructing these oil sands project and developing these oil sands projects and for years and years and years the big growth for Murray was not the people who actually mind. The product is people who build those minds and build those giant well sites and build the camps and all according structure around those the big boom ended because nobody was putting forward more projects to keep expanding back in two thousand eighteen Ford hills mine Which is the closest mine up to this? Where Tech was going. It opened a big mine owned by SUNCORP now. She partially owned by Tech Resources. It was called at the time in two thousand eighteen. Probably the last big oil sands mine. And that's because no other company was putting them forward except for tech resources. Big Long Shot Project. I may never be built. But but there was excitement in the oil sands community and in the government and in the sector because the potential the idea that another mind could be built is a jobs. Bonanza and sort of jobs bonanza we were used to Albert at developed this province as the screaming Beeman economic superpower. But that we haven't had so the idea that there could be another big mine on the books for when oil prices potentially rose again and it was approved the green light from Ottawa despite all our climate talk That was exciting. The that that the potential is snuffed. Out is a major disappointment here in. Alberta. Who are they blaming? For that disappointment because one thing. I will note is that this wasn't killed by Ottawa. Or was it almost killed by Ottawa? A even if they didn't rubber stamp it it was almost killed by Ottawa. That was the sense you know largely Ottawa. Ottawa was the decision maker in this point and if tech was very confident that this was going to get an approval they would have just Let that happen and would have been fine and Alberta would have been generally mall pleased that this was at least a in our project that could go forward right you know and do people here think Oughta killed it. Of course they do. This is the resource sector in government and Jason Kenny and Justin Trudeau. You know they are predisposed to blaming and directing scorn almost entirely Justin Trudeau for something and in this opportunity. They have a lot of. They have a lot of evidence that argues in their favor that had their Bandai conservative government or had there been a more classical government that just rubberstamps projects and doesn't really take into account all the cumulative impacts of Oil Sands Development and climate liability and climate risk. The this project would have

Cowboys may use both tags on Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper
"The final year specifies that each of the NFL's thirty two teams can use both the franchise and transition tags this particular offseason that historic guarantee. If you don't know what that is you know franchise in transition tags in general I mean we. We have all sorts of information if you really want to understand the depths of them but in general the franchise and transition tag are ways that NFL teams can protect players that are set to be free agents. If you don't WanNA player to hit free agency you don't want me hit the open market. Bam you slapped a franchise or transition tag on them and typically generally only one is available to each NFL team so you have to pick which player you want to place a franchise tag on right or transition. Whatever the movie and so the fact that all. Nfl teams would be able to utilize both of them. This offseason really served as an incredible asset for the cowboys wrote about this last year. We wrote about this in March. Nineteen how we talked about then. Hey next offseason. The cowboys could have this really awesome tidbit in the that was the title of the article. That could really help them. Because of the cowboys find themselves in a position and we we kind of forecast this year ago where they have three big players that new contract extensions that are set to be true free agents Dak Prescott Amari Cooper and Byron Jones. You knew that and so while you can shake combination however you want in all likelihood the Dallas cowboys were going to Franchise Tag Prescott because it seems incredibly unlikely that deal done before that happens. Before the franchise tag deadline and then they were going to place the transition tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones. Whoever you believe more likely personally I believe it was Amari Cooper but that would prevent both of those players from hitting the open market. Which means the cowboys could protect them. That's a big deal in. It seems like in this again. My personal opinion and and other people it'd be to share these thoughts and certainly a lot of our readers and commenters and listeners but a lot of people had kind of sort of made the assumption that the cowboys have accepted that they're going to lose Byron Jones. And you know what I think. I think I speak for all of us. That are listening. Here we're all gathered around the campfire. You know what if the cowboys is Byron? Jones not ideal but at least they have Dakhil these they have. They can figure this out. Maybe they spend their first round. Pick on cornerback. Whatever not trying to get to far into those weeds but the ability to keep both deck and Amari was and is a gigantic advantage. That the cowboys have going for them. How ever if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached in so far again at the time of this recording. We have the half that the owners have to comply with if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached it will essentially rendered the ability for teams to use both tags moot and they will revert to normal circumstances where there can only place one tag on one player. Now if you have not out by now you need to know that this hypothetical world which is I would say somewhat imminent in somewhat inevitable based on the rates that the collective bargaining agreement is happening and again as we sit on Thursday night. There's so many players kind of tweeting that they don't like the new. Cba proposal and whatnot so there could be some back and forth but if this is finalized before free agency and there's still a couple of weeks and those are going to be very important weeks then. Dak Prescott has all of the leverage in the world and all of the leverage in the world and we touched on this at the end of Thursday's episode because if that's the case and you and I were representing Dak Prescott. Then guess. What our point in our proposal to Jerry Jones Stephen Jones in the cowboys organization? Hey Dude if you don't if you don't get a deal done with us if you don't give deck all the money's basically you're going to have to tag them we all know that and if you tag back guess what you cannot tag anybody else if you tag back. Guess what. Amari Cooper and Byron Jones are going to be true free agents. You're going to be competing with the market for them. That is not ideal and other cowboys went from a world where they were probably going to lose one of the two. Probably going to be Byron Jones right to now that could potentially lose both of them which which would be a complete and utter disaster. And you know you can. You can play hindsight's twenty twenty but if the cowboys had just up to their contract offer to Dak Prescott Uruguay. I mean. We're talking thirty. Three thirty four million dollars per year. Everybody freaked out about that last year. That would look like such a bargain out. That's what happens with these deals. We've talked about that Matt Ryan to use thirty million dollars annually. Everybody freaked out now. That looks super cheap. And if the cowboys had done that they would have the ability to use the franchise tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones win this ultimate sort of hypothetical becomes a reality and they would theoretically only lose one. Maybe not even either. So now the cowboys win till the eleventh hour is going to cost them in a literal financial sense where they're gonNA have to pay Dak Prescott more money and it could cost them in the capacity that they are now going to lose Byron Jones. And maybe even Amari Cooper now I should say that there is a a ray of hope. I suppose because you know look you may think this and I don't mean new but I mean I mean other person the other person here my think Jerry Jones is just. You know the cowboys. They don't know what they're doing. They're messing up. But there is a possibility. Because Jerry Jones is typically a big proponent for things like this the specialty. Nfl adding another wildcard round and round and other wildcard teams. A seventeenth game that is upping the value for every NFL owner. Jerry Jones is obviously very involved when I was on. Espn San Antonio on Thursday. We head John Maclean from the Houston Chronicle legendary. Nfl reporter one of the best. Ever do it and I John. I said look you know. Is it possible? The Jerry Jones kind of knew that this was coming that he was going to lose his ability to use both tags and somewhat prepared. Here's John Maclean said on. Espn Antonio John. You mentioned the The franchise transition tag loophole. That may be filled up and unavailable to the cowboys. Now maybe I'm giving Jerry Jones and co a little bit too much of the benefit of the doubt here. But in your estimation do you think that they you know Jerry Jones at least and we don't know the way the votes win but that he would seemingly be at the very least somewhat in support of this which would negate the ability to tag to players if he did not have a plan in place to at the very least keep one or two of these. You know high price three free agents. They have Adak Amari. I'm Byron Jones before the Franchise. Tag deadline that that's a great point. Jerry Jones. One of the movers and shakers in driving this agreement and even though it could hurt him. But I think Jerry all along you can't keep everybody I expect them to Cape Prescott and probably Cooper if Byron Jones those on the market. He's got a chance to be is defensive defensive back in yesterday I think teams are going to line up to give him a record-breaking deal. I don't think they would do that. With the Mario Cooper. There's too many good receivers. It's a great year for receivers coming out the draft. It's a good year for corners. If you don't mean Horn and the top after the first round so say they let Burne Jones go say the replacing with a cheaper free agent or they go after a corner in the draft and they can even train them they might have their pick of all of them no big deal John Maclean said it was a great point no big deal deal no big deal but anyway I think that if you're looking again if you're trying to be positive trying to be optimistic. I think there are two things to note one is that this is not probably not a surprise to cut the cowboys. Brass right like they had to have known that the collective bargaining agreement could be You know a a new one could be struck and therefore the ability that they were potentially leaning on to utilize both tags would be rendered moods and so they had to potentially be prepared for that. Maybe they all prepared for that. Maybe the preparedness is the preparedness to lose both Byron Jones in Amari Cooper. Who knows the other thing is that Adam schefter head tweet about this where he said Some something to the effect of if there's a new CBA expect a flurry of roster moves. And it's possible that you know we. We've heard so much about how different players in different guys and especially quarterbacks are awaiting the new CBA strike new contracts because they want a piece of whatever. The new percentages that players are going to get and whatnot and so we'll see so it also is possible that maybe the deal lanes right after the new. Cba struck because maybe DAX team is waiting for a new CBA to all to make their move. So who knows? But that's the positive side of things if you're trying to be positive so it is what it

A thrilling naval rescue off the coast of Nova Scotia
"When things start to go wrong on the open ocean sometimes they go really wrong really quickly. We make really good boats. We have state of the art navigation systems and we have all the emergency measures in the world to prevent disaster still. We don't belong there. The Sea is not our turf. And if you've ever seen a movie about a nautical disaster it's not that far off from reality about a year ago off the eastern coast of Canada. Things went really wrong really quickly. And all that state of the art technology wasn't working when that happens the boat and its crew can't do much outs but put out an emergency distress call and pray that somebody answers it and that those people are close enough to help and if they're really lucky at the ships that answer. The call are part of the Royal Canadian Navy and are prepared to undertake one of the most dramatic. Rescues that you'll hear about outside of a Hollywood pitch meeting. This is the story of that rescue. I'm Jordan he throwing. This is the big stars. Nick Taylor busy of Maclean's chronicled the whole dramatic tale. An hello first of all what is the McKenna McKenna is a forty nine foot yacht. It's called the Hanse four ninety five. It was on the inside of beautiful boat. I don't know a whole lot of boats but I saw some photos Of the cabin and it was decked out you could wash dishes on that thing you could sleep very comfortably and you could sail the high seas. It's a fairly rich person vessel. Yeah I mean it's the kind of you buy when you have some money to buy a boat. So what happened to her well The owner of the boat was named John Hagen. He's a surgeon who lives here Toronto. And he asked a broker who is in the area where he should by boat so John and the broker whose name was pat sturgeon Had A few conversations and they found the McKenna in Greece. In this Mediterranean port called left us their mission was to buy the boat and then find a way to get her to Canada. How do you get a boat to Canada when you buy it overseas? I mean I guess. There's an obvious answer to that question. Well Yeah I mean you you usually on the water but there are a few options you can. You can bring a boat over in a container ship shipped almost package kind of thing or if you want to maybe save a little money depending or have a little more flexibility you can hire skipper to get on that boat. Hire a small crew and take it where you want. And this is what he did. And that's what he did. So tell me. But the the captain and the crew and and I guess what Rupert Mondro does because this is a job that I didn't know existed. It's an unbelievable story. How he started doing what he's doing he was born in South Western. England in Devon Place called barnstable. He was a trained actor at one point. He had his own company. He went bankrupt. He told me at the age of Twenty Eight. He was Drifting around I think thinking what do I do next at that point and so he got on a boat and loved. It started sailing and eventually he started delivering goods because he was very good. Skipper and so twenty five years. He did that until the he was he was hired to bring the McKenna across the Atlantic But he he's just a natural born c fair when you talk to him about it You know it's it's like he was born on the water and the way people talk about him is a remarkable. They say it's almost as if he doesn't need instruments he he can sail the seas just by sort of you know putting his finger in the wind and saying little now the waves are gonna come this way so we better go this way and You know he has autopilot. And all the fancy instruments but He's he's been spent the latter half of his life Just having fun sailing boats around the world and he's gone almost everywhere so he captained the McKenna taking it. I guess from Greece to Canada. Yeah he he brought crew And a cook And in October of two thousand eighteen they they met in in Greece and they spent a few days. They're getting ready Inspecting the boat making sure everything was in working order. It was by all accounts. A beautiful boat the McKenna was in very good condition and And ready for the voyage. He said By text to John. The surgeon Looking wonderful we're GONNA get going and so. They sailed through the Mediterranean. They had to stop in Italy everywhere. They talked with scenic about away but they stopped in Italy to fix a a steering problem fixed. It kept going. Stop at Gibraltar for a little while whether stopped them from going much. Further few days finally got onto the Azores which was the final stop before the Atlantic crossing Weather stop them again. There's a lot of weather in the late fall in the North Atlantic relatively treacherous waters so They were waylaid for for a while and It it took them quite a bit of time to get from Greece to the stores But then in November they set sail for Halifax what happened well. A lot of bad things happened relatively quickly The the treacherous weather caught up with them again. Rupert had this satellite phone that he borrowed from another sailor and he was able to get weather reports on sort of four or five hour delays. So he would check the forecast and based on what it said he would. He would steer the boat in a different direction. There was a big weather system coming in a big low pressure system from the South who was moving north and he and his crew. We're GONNA try to beat it to the north and they almost got there when you when you look at some of the screengrabs. They have of the of the weather patterns but they didn't quite make it and we're caught in this little arm of what they all refer to everyone involved in this as a hurricane. It was not a named hurricane but it was hurricane-force winds and it had this little arm whipping around and got caught in it and It for twenty four hours totally ravaged the boat crew was hunkered down The waves were were roaring. The wind was ripping through the rigging of the masks on On the on the boat and they were I mean they were they were rolling safely but quite violently through huge waves the kind of waves that you would see in big bad blockbuster movies you know. Not Maybe not the biggest of the big but huge so The weather data and they and they survived that The boats survived intact. They didn't capsize anything. Like that. But When it was safe to emerge in sort of inspect the damage rupert who Never saw probably couldn't fix came out and saw problem he almost couldn't fix because Man It was. Just it was torn. The steering was broken. The rudder was at a place it took some real Seafaring ingenuity to even get the boat. Operable again he and they kept going well. The steering quadrant was broken. The the the sort of mechanism that connects the rudder to the autopilot into the anything you need to actually change direction in the boat. He had to flip it around and turn it one hundred and eighty degrees the steering quadrant and then welded into place. Not Welding really. He had a cables and whatever it was at its disposal that would keep things together and worked. And so he I think the cruise airing macgyver. I got yeah he really was a seafaring macgyver and I think the crew was stunned They they were texting as well back to John. The surgeon who was a little helpless at this point in probably starting to feel a little guilty by boat is in the middle of the North Atlantic Middle North Atlantic. And his crew. That I sent. There's with it in. Oh my God we can even do and so. He was getting texts. They're saying we're pretty sure Rupert Scott under control because he's a pretty you know stoic. Man and And he did and they kept going and then well and then I hit more weather goodness. It never really stopped. They were chugging at this point as fast as they could to Halifax where the boat was gonNA spend the winter before coming to Toronto in the spring but more weatherhead This time the forecast racist dead wrong it. It misled Rupert and And his crew and they found themselves overtaken by a storm that I don't think was hurricane force but was nevertheless the kind of thing that would damage a boat. That's already been that's already damaged it just. His ingenuity was Was unfortunately Somewhat beaten down two to nothing by the storm so they found themselves once it had calmed a little bit and they were able to assess the situation adrift at Sea. What do you do in a situation like that? Well in this case what you do. Is You look for boats in the vicinity of your of your boat? Anybody who can help. You is a savior and fortunately for the McKenna. There were two Canadian navy ships.
