J.B. MacKinnon: What if the World Stopped Shopping?
"Day the world stops shopping is a fascinating experiment. In what if outlined your thought experiment had did you set up. Well it imagines that one night. I suppose we awake. We not often we wake up and we no longer have the desire to shop. We immediately reduce our consumption by watch. How much that was the first question. I had to ask myself. Obviously you can't reduce consumption by one hundred percent because at that point you're not acquiring any food clothing yourself in any way. I almost randomly an gut instinct kind of way picked a twenty five percent drop in consumer spending so across goods services and experiences and Started taking that out to the world. And i had sources saying to me. You know this is too ridiculous to even contemplate too absurd about too much. People said well you know. We can't even talk about that extreme drop in consumption. You know you thought. Experiment is is farther than i want to. Then i'm comfortable going with you and then of course it happened. Why was nearly finished. In fact writing the book when the pandemic struck and more or less overnight consumption in many countries dropped by about twenty-five percent became very became. Eminently real

"Winning the Norris Trophy, but he certainly has a case. I think his improvement Especially on the defensive end has been Pretty impressive. For still how young he is. We sometimes forget how young Kalma cars As far as Nathan MacKinnon goes. Lining up the Stats. That voters will take into account. Points. Let's start with goals build up the drama goals. Austin Matthews was number one. Connor McDavid's was number two. Nathan MacKinnon way down on the list. Okay, because He gave up so many opportunities to Mikko Rantanen this year. That was part of the reason why his goal numbers were not as high assist wise. Nathan MacKinnon was the top five. Was top five in the NHL. Connor McDavid's was number one. And Austin Matthews was way down on the list. Awesome. Matthews does not set up his teammates. He expects them to set him up. So As it comes out in the wash. For total points this year. Carmack David number one in the NHL. Austin Matthews tied for fourth. And Nathan MacKinnon eighth. Nathan MacKinnon. Is arguably the best player on the planet. Now I know that's tough to say that after the last couple of games, but he is Right? He is also the best player on the best team in hockey. The president's trophy winning Colorado Avalanche Nathan McKinnon is their best player. That is why he is on this list. I don't think He puts up a strong enough. Statistical case. This is not one of his better. Regular seasons. In terms of where he ranks in the NHL. Just not It's pretty good. Lot of guys would take one of Nathan McKinnon's worst seasons as their best season. But I don't think it's his what he has going for him his best player on best team. That's the argument for Nathan MacKinnon Best player on best team. Statistically. Its economic Connor McDavid's Right and consumer David Even though you know, last year Leon dry Seidel. The argument against him was he wasn't even the best player on his own team. Uh, Connor McDavid's is the best player on that team, and he had an unbelievable statistical season. And Edmonton made the playoffs. I think Connor McDavid's Is your heart trophy winner and I don't know that it will be especially close. And with Austin Matthews, it was the look at what he did for one of the NHL premier franchises. Right, Anyone The rocket Rashard, so That's why they're on there. You look back to 2017 where I think that Nathan MacKinnon rightly deserve the Hart Trophy and was robbed by Taylor Hall, whose real What he had on Nathan MacKinnon was that his team Picked up more points in a weaker conference and he played in the tri State area. And I will go to my grave saying that's why Taylor Hall when the M V P back in 2017 Nathan MacKinnon was better, statistically in every category. Every single category he was better than Taylor Hall. Still, statistically, he was the better player. Would argue 95 points in the Western Conference are more valuable than 97 in the East. But you look at this year. I just don't think Nathan MacKinnon has quite the argument that he did back in 2017. I'd love to see him win it. The guy deserves one. Right. Maybe this year is not his best statistical year, And it's a bad year when Connor McDavid's scores what he scored this year like 250 points. The guy was unbelievable. Nathan MacKinnon. Deserves a Hart trophy, but he was probably more deserving in years past than he is this year. But we'll see. I mean, I think that Again. Philipp Grubauer is the as best chance, and I think That's that's the hill. I'm willing to die on. Philipp Grubauer being the Vezina Trophy winner is the hell I'm willing to die on with Nathan MacKinnon. And with Kale, my car I could make a case. There certainly deserving of being finalists. But I think that there is Someone in the field that is probably more deserving than they are. Who knows? Maybe this year, Nathan MacKinnon will get one because the voters will look and say, Oh, my God, How does he not have a hard trophy?.

TikTok Sale Is Shelved
"Last year. Tiktok was a hot topic. The trump administration had threatened to ban the popular video app owned by china bytedance. If the company didn't divest its us operations to an american company after a lot of twists and turns the trump administration signed off on a preliminary deal between tiktok or and walmart and over the past few months. Regulators have been working with the companies to hammer out the final details. But now there's a new wrinkle. We report that the biden administration is shelving the deal indefinitely pending a broader review of potential security risks. John mackinnon covers tech policy for the wall street journal and he joins me now to explain. Hi john thanks for being here. Glad to be here. So john catch us up. This deal was reached in the fall. What's happened since then. The short answer is not a lot has been happening. The deal that was announced in september kind of language since then for a couple of reasons one is that president trump himself kind of lost interest in it as the election. Season heated up. And then you know the post-election drama kind of consumed him then the biden administration took over and they have decided to do kind of a big picture. Broadscale review of all of the china tech issues that the trump administration kind of left hanging and that's causing them to want to rethink basically the entire tiktok arrangement. So what can you tell us about some of the reasoning behind that. And what does it say about the administration's priorities concerning tech policy. Especially when it comes to well. I think that there's recognition on both sides of the political spectrum that the issues being raised by chinese tech platforms and chinese technology in general are real concerns and are substantial concerns and the trump administration to its credit was kind early to recognize some of these concerns but their approach. I think the biden people feel was a little bit scattershot. That's not a word that they use. But i think that that's really how it looks to them. And so they're trying to find a way to address all of these data security national security issues in a rational way that kind of can be used across the board in different contexts and with different chinese tech companies. So they're they're trying to avoid the kind of individual targeting of companies that the trump administration was effectively. Doing how are tiktok and its owner bytedance responding to security concerns. You know bytedance has offered to do a lot of different things but so far. I think it's fair to say has not done everything that the us government would like the us. Government wants to find some way to make sure that american users data stays out of the purview of the chinese communist party of the chinese government and the folks who run bytedance assure everybody that they would never turn over american users data to the chinese government. But so far. I think it's fair to say. The american government is not convinced that that's right and they're really looking for some assurances that this chinese based company will not ever ballot to the wishes of the chinese government in turn over american users data and it's frankly tough nut to crack so that's what led the trump administration to try to concoct a deal that would effectively transfer ownership of the american operation to a majority. Us company but nothing has come of that so far now i think it's fair to say that the bytedance folks think that they have sufficient protections built into their system now to keep data out of the hands of the chinese government but us officials are not convinced that it's enough. What's the impact for oracle and walmart of shelving this deal even if only temporarily well i think there are different implications for those two companies. I think walmart went into this with the idea of developing a closer relationship with tiktok and building up its promotions and its brand through tiktok in i think that they have sort of reached enough understandings with the bytedance folks and tiktok on the marketing side. There was they've developed enough partnerships on the marketing side that they are basically happy even if they don't ever wind up with an ownership stake in the us operation oracle. I think is hoping to play a role in maybe hosting. The data may be securing the data that's developed by the us operation. I think that they would still like to own a chunk of this business. I think that they would like to have more of a presence in platforms in social media. But they'll be happy with what they get. If this deal does go forward. There are still a couple of legal loosens here to write. What would still need to be tied up will. There are a lot of cases that are going on but you know cases come and go As the needs arising go away. So i think that there are a lot of interesting issues being presented by these cases you know the extent to which the american president can exert this kind of control on foreign based tech platforms. That seemed to present a national security risks. I think that that's an issue that even congress probably will need to address further and there's some interest within the biden administration in trying to do that to try to get congress to do something. It may be that the next move is really in congress's court all right. That's wall street. Journal reporter john mackinnon. John thank you so much for joining me today. You're

Incoming freshmen discuss what it's like to start college during a pandemic
"Now, one more thing about what it's like to start your freshman year of college during a pandemic I think's away that the virus is affecting incoming freshmen. This group of people on a really unique way that time between high school and college during a normal year when there's not a pandemic is already stressful. It's such a big moment. Name is Lauren MacKinnon. I am an education reporter after coats. I was thinking a lot about the summer between my senior year of high school in my Freshman Year of college when I was just being anxious and also being excited and worried about the transition though a pandemic into it, all this as schools and colleges across the country struggle with their reopening plants here though an economic crisis in. In, family struggling during the pandemic it makes it even more difficult and I really wanted to capture the stories and understand kind of decisions young people were making and how those decisions the rest of their lives. My. Name is Adrian Williams I'm eighteen years old I'm from Jersey City New Jersey and I go V illustrious. Howard University. School is fully online. So I'm I'm home. So Asiana she has wanted to go to Howard University for years. And you know she applied when she senior she's ready to go and all of a sudden. It didn't really make a ton of sense to. Apply for loans and do all the stuff when the economy's in great money is just not looking right and I can't and I and it was it was to the point where I literally couldn't go I could not school. The balance is not paid and no one in my family had good enough credit to cosign on my loan and so all of a sudden kind of her goal for most of high school to grow to this university didn't make sense because of the pandemic when it's done to higher education and so I think her big kind of. Decision making process really revolved around money. She was considering the community college closer to home. She would save a lot of money doing that it was really about the financial implications of this and I'm. Doing the best for her emily the you know the decision to take out loans right now that's going to affect you know for the rest of your life. started out I really didn't think it would affect my college at all. Zeros did I think that it would be like this I think the big theme is just the decisions that these students are hatching make because the pandemic. I think that you know we hear a lot about young people, college students, breaking rules, and wanting to party not wearing masks I think we is happening but these were students who really wanted to play by the rules really just wanted as normal college experience as possible try to as they can happen and it just didn't happen or they have to change it and make alterations to the original plans, which is something that everyone is having to you in different ways but if you're an incoming freshman this. Desert ways since decisions could play out. So once they announced a statement saying. No one is community campus. The tuition was perfectly reduced to the fact where we opinionated cash like us how small the ballots was. Running for Miss Freshman so you might. Think that I can do a good job in even if I don't end up winning Miss Freshman, I think I will have a lot of fun running. For Miss Fresh. I'm going to try.
Avs ride 5-goal 1st period to 6-3 win over Stars in Game 5
"Yeah, the Avalanche trying to follow the Nuggets lead, so to speak and climb out of a 31 hole in their second round series with stars, they showed they might be able to do it with last night's thrilling 63 win. Colorado scored five goals in the first period, four of which came in just two minutes and 36 seconds. But the story the night may have actually been between the pipe for the ABS, where the team's third goalie Michael Hutchinson, made his first career playoff start, 30 year old Journeymen said it was a dream come true. That's what you work for. He's also been on a couple of episodes of Mr D., which is another popular television show but one of the big examples where people of seen him onscreen has been the Tim Horton commercials I'm Sidney Crosby I'm as McKinnon and we're on the drive through to hear. They're both working the drive through and they get the. PA THEY ASK customers when they're ordering. From these coast. Hospital can answer drive right through Sidney Crosby as a free order. I think. Sidney crosby. One person says Nathan Mackinnon Answer. To the drive through its begins data shows up. Like with Sidney Crosby Crosby crosby with McKinnon. He's the comedic relief which seems kind of bizarre in some ways because he is this really like straight for driven personality but and these commercials he's so goofy Kirk me if I'm wrong here Ryan, but it seems to me like the NHL hasn't really tried to make Nathan Mackinnon into a superstar the way that they have with some other players is that fair to say and if so why is that? I'm only laughing because avalanche fans and people in Denver, who care about this team will sit there and nod silently in agreement with you or they might be shouting at their phones like, yes, this is he's onto something. With Nathan MacKinnon. It's sort of like this bizarre way of explaining it, but it's like he's known but he still unknown in a lot of different ways and there's been questions about why is that could be because he played for a team that was dormant for so long now people are just starting to kind of get familiar with them. Is that the fact that he plays in time zone where they're the only American team it's interesting because it goes back to, let's say marketing and the sense of let's look at Connor mcdavid Austin Matthews and Nathan MacKinnon Connor mcdavid plays in one of the most hockey driven cities on the planet and Edmonton to the point where he sent a GTO interview. whalers didn't make the playoffs. He had people harassing him at dinner when he was with his family because it's admonition and they take it seriously what you don't see a lot of oilers games on television in the United States they are always on television in Canada with the leafs and Austin Matthews. It's the fact that he plays in a market where it is always on it is non stop whereas if when you look at Nathan Mackinnon for all the reasons, we just mentioned the ads are one of. Those teams where they were kind of off the map and a lot of different ways because they weren't these Joe Sakic Forsberg Patrick, teens of the past where they were always on espn her or on Fox or whatever the case may be, and so it also goes back to a guys personality because the thing is this like Mckinnon and his own right he does media availability but he is more of a quiet personality just kind of let go the next game I relaxed and just trying to be aggressive. Mindset Everson's you don't really see him interact too much on social. You do from time to time, but he's not someone who On all the time all the time. Well, Ryan given the number of stars that have been knocked out of the playoffs so far connor mcdavid. Sidney crosby. Austin Matthews probably. Pretty soon is this nate, McKinnon's moment. Absolutely absolutely like, yes, this is the moment for. Everybody who's a major star was still entered or not people are looking at the Colorado Avalanche and going okay. If they win this thing, are you talking about a long-term dynasty the way Chicago and Pittsburgh have had it we're for the next thirteen to fifteen years. Nathan MacKinnon is going to go from a guy where it was like Oh yeah. He's the guy that's out west. I don't see enough to Oh dear God I see too much of him and I hate it because he's always doing this to my tea. If he were to win it. Then it's the idea of he's a cut champion. He's done it in the most bizarre circumstances. He's doing it with a team that's supposed to be good for a long time, and he's still in a very young stage of his career. So there should be no reason why more people don't get to know him. Ryan thanks so much for coming on the show and enjoy this probably deep playoff run they have me on appreciate it. You can follow Ryan Clark's coverage of the Colorado Avalanche at the Athletic Dot Com. From wondering the athletic I'm under scelzo.

It's this and it's that and guys laugh at this because they just know how driven he is McKinnon is from Halifax Nova Scotia as a certain guy named Sidney Crosby, can you tell us a little about the relationship between those two? It's a relationship with crosby dare is. Definitely, a big brother sort of feel it's it's pretty cool relationship we have it's more of a brotherly thing when I was fifteen I, I never thought I'd be friends with the guy I was just wanted to get his autograph and a picture you know. So if you're a guy like me kid who you've been dealing with these comparison since you were truthfully seven years old, you're going to want to learn from a guy like that especially when you see success as to how done it have you done it for so long you know I just kind of whatever said says I, do you know he's still wise and? He knows he's done at all and obviously one guy who is reached several pinnacles of hockey in another player trying to do the same thing. Mckinnon came into the NHL with very high expectations. You know he was a number one overall pick and in his rookie season. Lived up to those expectations. And, the winner of this year's calder memorial trophy is. Nathan MacKinnon. Certainly, hard to imagine this now, but there was a period of time where we're Mackinnon was.

"So much that I actually. I'm so ashamed of this. I actually got out of my seat. Tiptoed up the aisle stepping over Prune people buying and groaning slightly and saying. Excuse me sorry. Has Anybody seen my chicken sandwich? Wanted to if you could just check on the seat please chicken. Sandra founded sort of halfway up the passwords had been flung by the impact picked it up carefully tiptoed my way back and sat down again though. This was to go somewhere but obviously my brian was. I'm thinking held the sandwich up to my mouth and then noticed that it was now not just white but red and watch and there was blood seeping all through this chicken sandwich and visual metaphor. And that's it why it's exactly poppy against the wide exactly and it fizzled him. So well with the fact that in shock as I'm sure you're aware when when the brain is overloaded with dreadful things it just focuses on the most ridiculous things and as that soldier had focused just on the red and white Eyethu just was focusing on the red and white and then I I came to as it were completely pieces and started to panic and who I told the story to the class and I heard later that the head of English had said well. You've seen several teachers teaching. Who Do you think and the class say well? We don't know what his name is. But the chickens the man so so chicken sandwich to the job what kind of school did ellesmere to announce ills me had been a very philly chanting sort of place. And I had arrived with a sense of enchantment because I'd walked into the school and immediately wished for a time crow and have no idea why I wanted to time crow but I just walked into the school. It was a very croly place. You know there was a there. Were jackdaws in all the roof. Tops rooks core and I love the pine trees outside the school. The the emblem of the school was arriving with the ring and its mouth and the headmaster was called Mr Deco. Which was rather is and this. Daydream came to me that I thought you know what I really need to. Complete the picture of myself in the school. I want to Tame Crow and I could picture myself wandering around the school in my academic GAM and in this fairly hogwarts sort of school anyway and with Time Crow on my shoulder and it was such a vivid daydream. That I'd actually even made up a name. For this crow this imaginary putative crow it was going to be cold. Jack McCall Phallocrocorax magister. More dacoven decry ridiculous. I dream up except that it came true in today's because a friend of mine event happened to come across an injured slightly injured crow on his rams and two days later. Delivered it to me and I had this time crow so for Short Jack. Throw and and he was a very very mischievous Birdie was going around them stealing jewelry and trashing exam papers and causing absolute half. But the thing you wanted to do to sit on your shoulder. She went through the school grounds. Absolutely true he'd flyway and fly around and then if I went outside and held up my arm and cor check check check check check. He come onto my onto my onto my shoulder. That's so cool. I wish you'd been my teacher. Oh I know it was great. It was great and the whole of my stay at Ellesmere. College seemed to be permeated through with this type of story book. Feeling on the edge of something magic fresh off and college is situated right on the edge of wiles and there's something very enchanting very magical about wiles i. I couldn't help feeling a bit of Welsh. Magic was seeping out of the hills. After six years at the school you got itchy. Fate decided to lay. Yes what kind of a departure did you WANNA MAC? I thought look arrived. Just in a rucksack with over the rucksack having come overland from Australia. Let's leave in the same way. And wouldn't it be to get a tiny little boat of some sort? Put it in the nearby canal. Sell off everything. Iron apart from the bare necessities have a party in the woods. One evening and do that classic thing of growing into the sunset. Wow just waving goodbye to everyone as the sun is setting. That's you just disappear. It's a bit like Mary poppins in a way. It's a bit of a magical departure. This teacher drops in from Australia. Teaches them and leaves by sort of going away was here is done. My Work here is also the next place is so the day came and you found a mirror all the practices of the school somewhere. That's right yes and set it all up. How did the day go you'll farewell? I'd had a wonderful auction to sell off everything I owned. Everyone a life changing and enlightening literally unburdening experience. Just have an option. Sell everything you own for charity and walk out without even your keys in your pocket. Eight absolutely brilliant. You Walk Away with this. Great sense of lightness. And so that's what I did. The day itself was nondescript but when that evening came there was a whole lot of students staff friends all standing on this tiny little humpback bridge over the canal in this would early. September chanting time Blue Dusk and I wrote off into the sunset down the canal or wish I'd learned to row because I could sail but I'd never road and you would sink rowing as easy. Oh it's not it's not it's not. I don't know if you're familiar with the English canals. But they are built for narrow boats and narrow boats gold narrow boats for very good reason. They are very very very narrow very long but very narrow the canals are not much wider and even though a mirrored is tiny. When you've got it's all on either side your dingy and it's all is is actually considerably wider than a boat and so unless you can keep a half absolutely down the center of the canal. You saw veering towards bank the other and then you're you're or is catching and all the reeds and rushes and and the bank. What was meant to be a graceful and as you say Mary poppins like Farewell Press would have done better to float away on a number was actually this series of crashes and Thuds Zigzag Dolph Down. Don't bomb and them down the canal so it wasn't quite graceful departure. I was envisaging in my mind but that first night I got about three miles down. The canal realized I'd made a terrible terrible mistake and not being able to row had already started getting blisters on my hands and killed in a sleeping bag under a bridge. Somewhere in this meadow. The cows coming close coughing Obama Walmart thinking and the funny thing is I could see lots of elderly college literally. Five hundred meters away just across the field. I mean if anybody from College of wandering down to the bottom of the plainfield. They would've found me here. I was so tempted just to sneak back for one last week. Tram. No I didn't. I didn't know you made your farewell do so the next morning when you wake up you go. What was your plan anyway at that stage. Well I thought about three days with dirt. I was on a canal which I thought were joined with a seven and then I thought if I just get down to Shrewsbury which is the nearest town. Just a little south. I thought that would probably be a good place to just leave the boat. But but in fact I hadn't done my homework. I realized the canal was on about another three miles on completely petered out. What happened the canal right now? Will I looked at my ordnance survey map and the nearest thing was a tiny tiny little blue sprayed on the map which was about one hundred meters across a field called the mortar brooke so trumped across the field found a brook about four feet wide. But it was water. I went back and I dragged the boat across the you drag you boat across the field dubbed into the Brooklyn. Deduct kitschy reconnected into the water system. Well did it. Did two days later because progress down. That Brooke was extremely slow. Kept Coming Heroes Bob WV inches and jot logjams and by the time I actually reached a main river again. I had broken one of the Rolex completely away from the boat ripped one one of the guns completely off so I could only go in very very small circles. I had put.

"We've gotta root treasure for you as requested by some of AL longtime listeners. It's my conversation with Sandy MacKinnon. And it was first broadcast in two thousand fourteen. Sandy MacKinnon is a man. Who's always loved the idea of adventure in the most romantic sense of the wood? In Ninety Ninety eight seventy had just finished his job as a teacher in a school in English countryside. So Sandy got into a little boat a dinghy and he said off down the river intending to see a friend who lived downstream in Gloucester. They'll send you got to Gloucester ride. But he'd had such a nice time in that but on the water so we thought he'd keep coming and going and going sandy's adventure in his. He took him down rivers through locks across the English Channel and into the Great River Systems of Europe. Months later he's dinghies sailed shakily out of the Danube River and into the Black Sea sending Muslim candidate. Incredible kindness from strangers. Over at one point he thought he was going to be shot and in nameless forest somewhere in Romania. Sandy wrote an illustrated book about this adventure. Some years ago called the unlikely voyage of Jack Decry and if nothing else. Sandy story proves that you could have a proper adventure if you don't have a plan hi Sandy. Where did your love of adventure? Come from well I think it. It probably actually started with children's books. I can still remember vividly opening up. I must have been six or seven at the time opening up Dr Dolittle and there was this line there that said something. Like I'm Dr Doolittle Hopton his ship with his parish monkey and his pig and his dog and sailed away and bumped into Africa door that I love that thought that you could just hop into a ship and sail often and bump into somewhere. You know you didn't have to plan to do. Didn't have to get a passport visas. And so on all that and that was when I was seven and then shortly afterwards we my whole family actually got on a ship and ocean liner. Not Nothing has romantic is a little doctor. Little Gallon and sailed off from Sydney to England and that voyage balls. Just the start of this lovely sense. That travel should be slow and should involve seagulls and dolphins and did you ever heavenly styling experience as a kid. Yes we were lucky enough to have a holiday house on Lake Jindabyne in the south and my mother is an incredibly keen sailor and we had a little mirror dingy and would pack myself my two sisters and my brother into this tiny little boat. I mean it's it's the size of a small dining room table really and take us charging like and always and there are lots of little islands in the middle of Lake Jindabyne and of course each one of those became a type of treasure island or piracy island on but being the youngest. Of course I was always. The ship's boy really was put right up the front. I wasn't allowed to touch any of the ropes and funny enough. I hated it. It was so because it was cold it was wet and everybody else was getting the ropes to hang onto and it was only years later when I got in a boat and I didn't have my mother telling me what to do. The various ranks sisters and brought her that. I actually really enjoyed it. You said this was a mirror dinghy. What is Mirror Dinghy? Oh the mirror. Dinghy was designed was part of a competition run by the Daily Mirror paper in England years ago for someone to design a boat that was small enough to fit on. The top of the car could be made at home by a competent craftsman in the in the back shit and was really suitable for whole family. They're very well known to dingy silence. They've got a bright red style. Wooden Hull that made of ply board the actually stitch together with copper wire sheets of board and then varnished over fiberglass over. They come from about the nineteen sixties. But they look like the sort of thing that swallows an Amazon's would have been sailing aggressive of a large full-scale toy boat. Exactly exactly yes. So about eleven eleven foot from the front. That's called the now to the back which was called the stone discovered. I call it the pointy end in the blood. That was a natural fee to become a teacher. Yes absolutely both. My parents are teachers which I'm not sure that has a lot to do with it. But from a very early age I loved explaining things to people. I'd Borel my friends by trying to explain. The why particular game worked all why the moon appeared as the sky but I was lucky enough. Add to superb teachers at school an English teacher and a maths teacher. You couldn't have had better teachers in terms of bringing a passion to their subject and being able to explain things in ways that was so crystal clear that light bulbs were going on five times a lesson. So then we'd get to the start of your adventure. It's getting a job as a teacher in Ellesmere College. That's an England. How did you get the job? Derived in England with a backpack having traveled overland all the way from Australia and my father. Who's a very conservative man and always giving me advice that very cautious saying and you can't expect to arrive in February in England and walk into any job and I agreed with him because he's right about everything but I I actually thought well tell you could sit somewhere and brought tons and tons of resume letters and send them off and hope to hear back but in fact what I did is. I had a car drove around England and stopped in every one of the schools. I could find usually the the English. Private Schools will call them public schools. That I've heard about a new about from my parents and I'd sort of knock on the door and say is the headmaster busy and slightly startled. Receptionists would say well. He's he's with the Bishop at the moment. Can I help you? Have you got an appointment? We'll know but I'm just wondering if there's a job and as it turned out using that method I got four jobs in three days but the last of these was Ellesmere College. Which was this lovely slightly crumbling rundown private school just slowly decaying into the dental on in the the cow pats of Shropshire meadows fantastic school. How did you clinch the job? Oh Yes yes. The headmaster had introduced me to the head of English. Who'd said well come along and let's let's say you teach a class so in Toronto class solve the year levins and was given a poem to teach. Now it was a war poem by Isaac Rosenberg. And it wasn't I was familiar with but it was once in the first World War and it talked about a soldier in shock and horror noticing. Just a red poppy against the White Chalky Bank of a of a trench. He's in now happened. That on my on my trip to England. I'd been traveling in a bus in northern territory and it had crashed and it'd been pretty horrific but the whole the whole thing. Was that on that long long. Long long trip from Townsville across the I had gone and purchased a broadside cafe a chicken sandwich. And this Richard. This was the best chicken sandwich you have ever seen. This was not this Grubby. Little bit of white bread and an a thin slice of chicken. This was full of mouthwatering chicken. Chunks of chicken skin crackly bids man as cracked pepper. Not The sort of thing you expect to find no outback. Cafe was get the address of this place absolutely anyway. I'd I'd been put it. Put it aside to save us and I thought I'm going to myself at this very long tedious trip and just the sun was coming up right well. It's new enough to breakfast. And out of its rappers and I was just about to buy into it wearing there. Was this blinding crash headlights. Coming huge crash. The bus started going down this relatively steep embankment totally out of Control. What seemed like half? An hour of jolting must have only been thirty seconds. Came up against these. Boulders holds onto the best stove in the driver slumped over the wheel. Smoke steam billowing out glass smashed people bodies of people lying to and fro in the aisle and my thought was. I looked at my hand which was now empty. Thought Bugger wisp chicken sandwich and not only that shock.

Abbas have a really difficult time figuring out and I look back at some of the stats because we have this conversation around the stadium series Jonathan quick has the best G. A. against any team in the Western Conference in America against the absent the convoluted way of putting it but he has a better goals allowed average against Vancouver Calgary and Edmonton go figure I mean those are three teams that historically haven't been great so maybe that plays into it a little bit but it's Vancouver Calgary Edmonton then the ads and winds Weiss only Anaheim and Edmonton two division rivals does Jonathan quick have more wins against in his career I'm talking career I'm not just even talking about one or two years so Jonathan quick loves playing against the apps and he was fantastic last night but I had a feeling outside of the Nathan mackinnon stuff I wanted after that game to thumb out a tweet of criticism because my thought was you know what we hold the nuggets to this standard we don't downplay losses the bad teams I mean the nuggets are like twenty seven in ten against sub five hundred teams that's a pretty good record but we do criticize when they lose and and not unfairly by the way he's on a good hockey team ABS are in the middle of a division race why shouldn't we be critical when it goes back to our conversation the other day why do we not feel the same way about the ads that we do the nuggets that that despair that angst why are they why are the ABS so much more fun then the nuggets are the nuggets watching them is and following them is kind of a chore lately I mean you really is but the ads you never have that feeling in the end it read you know I had that same thing last night like they should beat the kings they had an opportunity to move into first place over the blues because the blues lost and they didn't get it done against an inferior hockey team and its toll and not totally in character for them to lose to bad teams that's part of it but also Jonathan quick historically is a really good against the avs whether that Babs are good or bad Jonathan quick seems to have their number they lose Nathan mackinnon they're playing their third game in four nights all on the road the kings even though there's still not a very good team one five in a row going into that game last night and it seems like I'm I'm being a avalanche apologists are making excuses for him but it's it's a fine line between excuses and reasons and I feel like the circumstances around last night's game losing Nathan mackinnon to injury historically how good Jonathan quick has been the road fatigue the fact that the kings are pretty hot right now feel like those are kind of reasons right there reasons not excuses but I wanted to be I wanted to be like you know what that's a bad loss that's a bad loss and in some way it is but you look at all these factors and you're like you know what not totally surprising that they lost last night but opportunity squandered none the less and the blues lead remains at one point this thing's gonna come down to game eighty two you know it is that was my not even supplant the blues until game eighty two but we know that neither team is going to grab hold of this thing in the last twenty games serve seventeen games whatever it is right now it's coming down the game eighty two five two two nine eight seven two your thoughts on the ABS a loss in the near loss of Nathan mackinnon coming up next now gets also in action last night they fared better against Milwaukee C. team but were there things on an individual level that made Harrison when feel good about the win last night other than the result itself of course the outstanding I know gets writer for DNV R. joins me next on action sports thirteen under from.

Federal Judge Blocks Cloud Contract Award to Microsoft
"In a win for Amazon. A federal judge in Washington ordered the Pentagon to halt work on the massive Djeddai cloud computing contract that it awarded to Microsoft. It's preliminary injunction handed down by the court and let's talk about this latest development with the Wall Street Journal's John Mackinnon John Going back a bit. What was the reason for Amazon's suit against this award to Microsoft for the Jedi contract? Well Amazon had gone into this competition for the Djeddai contract as sort of the clear favourite and then Last year All of a sudden it turned out that the Pentagon was awarding the contract to Microsoft. And so that was a big surprise in a big disappointment to Amazon. And so they have gone to the court of Federal Claims Here in Washington And and they're trying to get this award to Microsoft overturn and Amazon has long contended. That this award to Microsoft was politically motivated. Yes that's absolutely right and you know the. The president has complained on several occasions about the way that this contract was handled and he's also complained a lot about Amazon during his time in office Some of this A lot of people think stems from the fact that Amazon's founder. Jeff bezos is the owner of the Washington Post and the Washington Post Has At times been pretty tough on president trump. What about the Pentagon Is it fighting this latest move? Yes the Pentagon has been fighting Amazons case in court and they put out a statement saying that. They're you know very disappointed in this ruling today so they are definitely opposed to Amazon on this. How important is this contract? This is a huge cloud contract. Isn't it potentially? It is a really really big contracts worth up to ten billion dollars if the contract goes for the entire ten years that it could go at the same time though you have to keep in mind that the Defense Department and a lot of the government in general Have Been Sort of rethinking their approach to enterprise cloud computing and. There's a lot more interest in what you might think of as multi source clouds so the unusual thing about the contract was that it was a single source contract. It basically said we will go find one cloud vendor and that will be our cloud vendor for the you know. Basically the entire Pentagon and so that approach is starting to evolve around the government and even at at the Pentagon so it wouldn't be a surprise to see this contract run for fewer than ten years anyway and for you know other Steps by the Pentagon to add other vendors along the way but yes on paper. This is enormous contract. I notice from your story. John that the court blocked the Pentagon from proceeding with the contract quote until further order of the court. I suppose we don't have any sort of time frame on this after all. It's a preliminary injunction that's right it's preliminary injunction and we really don't know because like a lot of things in the court of Federal Claims which decides these contracting disputes This order is under seal because so much of what they deal with In this court contains proprietary information or competitive information lots of the pleadings in this quarter under initially under seal and so this order is unfortunately under seal so we don't know a whole lot of detail about what has happened and I suppose it's too early to speculate whether or not would Yo- to the Supreme Court I think it's a little early for that And the Court of federal claims is not a rich source of cases for the US Supreme Court. But who knows? I mean. This is an unusual case for sure

They come right down Broadway or bat down to the ice before contact was made. It's going to be a trip on Eric Johnson. It was close very Johnson going to the penalty box. And this time was here from Jake Brank. Colorado dumber, six two minutes for tripping. Or bat was the far side circle. On yet. "So that seems to me it would probably be better. You mentioned Nathan MacKinnon the issue Jared Vedder as well. Real nice interview by Christine. Nathan MacKinnon, fantastic stuff. Mccune was furious. And it seems as though to me is with his coach arguments happening Joel competitive, and we wanna win around here. And obviously we haven't been doing that. And but it's just unfortunate got caught on camera. I saw it after the cowboy game was pretty rally my hotel room just looking like an idiot screaming in Calgary heated exchange on the bench with your coach. What was going on there? Tell me I can't do that kind of thing. It was just about the goalie being pulled. I thought it should be earlier. And that's all you know, unfortunate that got caught on camera cameras everywhere. Of course, we did it actually look worse than you thought. It was when it was going on when you actually saw it. I don't know. I kind of I kind of blocked out, and I was just I was so upset, and but yeah, it was in Paris. I was embarrassed for sure. Cam on losing my mind doing things kicking things I didn't go to the meal room after the game after stayed in my hotel room and head, but I guess they're eating and they showed it on sports beds e walked in the room while they're eating. Locker. Yeah. I'm glad I wasn't there for that. So readers everywhere were wondering did you say do your job? Well, he told me to do my job just about doing my job side. You said it back stupid. But that's what I didn't just say that water under the bridge. Yep. Yep. No mean beds. You're all good. And the one takeaway for me was him saying I was in barest by that it came out. Listen, everyone that we've talked to any hockey player talk to you have blow ups with your head coach blows through teammates. You're in Canada televised. That's going to get caught. What was your takeaway from Nathan MacKinnon and Jared Bednarz eruption on the bench? Well, I I thought Christine's interview was great. And he talked about how he was. So embarrassed you didn't leave his hotel room. And he said he was lucky because when Beden are walked into the meal room there were watching sports net, and we had that shot on the screen and McKinnon was like probably a good thing. I wasn't there. But to me it just shows me that they're adults. Right. Mckinnon accepted the Blaine but bend earned in throw gasoline on the fire. He basically said, you know, when you're going through, Canada, and that happens it can go two ways. It's either an eighteen alarm blaze. His. Yeah. Or it's a brushfire and the avalanche made it a brushfire, and what's even more impressive about that. Is they were losing at the time there in that terrible street. They liked the way they play in Calgary. They liked the play the way they play in. Winnipeg the gets shut out and Montreal before they went in Toronto. But they don't make it worse than it is you're going to Montreal you're going to Tronto it's easy to turn into a disaster. They didn't do it. I thought was most interesting was a couple of Colorado players told me that McKinnon and bedding are kinda get into it a bit that's kind of their relationship that they'll say some things to each other. But it's never on camera. So you don't notice it. And then I say well as it ever like that. No, no. It's never quite. But it's they're like they respect each other's passion. And that says to me that first of all you've got a coach there understands that not everybody reacts the same. So you give a bit more of a rope to an emotional guy who is one of your best players. But also. Also that you just say, okay it happened. And we're not gonna let this rip apart..
"mackinnon" Discussed on Brain Matters
"Ready to serve the city. I was I was listed on Amazon and because Amazon just moved their headquarters to Queen somebody clicked on the button. I had no choice. I had to come up here. Yeah. If. A fill the doctor shortage. But so, yeah, I mean, lots of things have changed. I got a new name amid a new place. But you know, one thing that hasn't changed -ment. What's that? Anthony. That's good episodes, brain matters. And this is definitely one of them. Oh, you got another great episode for us. You took the lead on this interview. And I assume that you talked to somebody interesting fascinating. It was a great conversation. So can you please tell me who it was what it was about? And how you felt about it. Yeah. So yeah. Of course, it was a great conversation that I had with Dr Roderick MacKinnon who is a professor at Rockefeller University as well as the Howard Hughes Medical institute. And Dr McKinnon has been studying how electrical signals are transducer in neurons, and he's interested in this from the level of of ion channels, and I. On channels. We talked about these in previous episodes, but they are proteins that are embedded in the neuron, and they sort of function as the the gate way or the highway in between the inside and the outside of neurons, and they're really interesting because they are the thing that changes, the electrical properties of those neurons because there are these charged particles that go through these channels, and that causes your neurons to fire, and they caused them to not fire. And so they govern a lot of the activity in our brain for this reason, Dr McInnes been really interested in how do they open? How do they close? And also, what do they look like? Yes. So they're extraordinarily small to the naked eye, but they're complicated. Proteins, right. They're they're kind of big they're bulky, they're the multiple sub units and they have moving parts. So at imagine it's challenge to deduce what the structure. Of these things are and structures important, exactly. Like, you mentioned they're incredibly small to the naked eye, but they're actually very complicated structures. And so understanding how they open and close has been a mystery because we are really challenging to visualize. And the reason they're so difficult is that these proteins exist within the lipid BI layer, which is fatty component. That is is basically outside of ourselves, and they sit in between them and getting proteins out of that fat has actually just really difficult. And for that reason, we don't know what a lot of them look like, but Dr McKinnon has embarked on a career long effort to try to isolate them, and then do these complicated techniques. One of them is known as x Ray crystallography that allows you to see what these very small molecules look like, and they create these very beautiful three dimensional images of. Of you know, what they look like you can actually use those images to understand how they move or what what are what are the constraining factors of of how they could move or how even the ions can pass through them. And we talked a little bit about this in the episode because he's he's very well known for this. Yeah, I've seen I've seen some of those these ion channel structure images in papers. And it's actually kind of cool you can find certain representations of them that you can get a three D affect by the sort of magic is crossing crossing your eyes type of thing. The they'll have to images next to each other that are slight slightly rotated or different colors are do it. And you can actually see this structure in three d on like a printed paper. So that's kind of a fun little thing. I would recommend looking that up just to see just to see that cool three D affect. Yeah. And so Dr MacKinnon also at the end of the episode. We talked about a new ish technique that has really revolution. Is the field, which is known as cry. Oh, EM or Kreil electron microscopy and this technique we go into it a little bit in the episode. So I'm not gonna talk about it now. But it allows you to much more easily isolate these proteins, and so this has actually caused us to be able to visualize so many more I on channels and other proteins, and so he's been using that actually currently and some of his work at the moment. Yeah..
