"For USA Today and bob, you know how it goes this time of year. Trade deadline. Everyone wants to know about particular players, particular teams. So let's go rapid fire today, okay? Sounds good, buster. All right, what do we know about Shohei Ohtani, who is emerged into the trade market with just a few days to go. Hey, zero chance he gets traded. I'll be the shocker of all shocks. So now he's not going anywhere. I think they're just listening so that if they do have to move in this winter, he was not interested in setting a long-term contract. At least you know, who is interested in what teams are willing to offer. But that's it. I'll tell you what. If they traded a human, they have to give money back to all the sponsors or everything else. And this guy's making money for the club. Yeah, and I agree with you. I don't think he's going to be traded. I think this is a case of Perry manasse in their general manager listening. I would say that one team that could check a lot of boxes and making a trade for Otani, the Saint Louis Cardinals, because we know that when we talked about the potential of them being involved in the Juan Soto conversation, the feeling is, okay, well, soda would upgrade the offense. You still have a need for number one starting pitcher. Ohtani would feel both needs. So if you're John mozzarella, should you go in there and try to go in big? Sure, you can. Soto markets or Castillo market. But yeah, I don't think the angels are serious whatsoever. Just listening. And this guy, buster, he makes 20, $25 million a year for the angels. So are they really going to cut a check to all the sponsors? Okay, here's your money back. It would cost a lot of money just to trade them. So during the winter, perhaps that's probably not now. All right, Juan soda, what do we know? About 14 is being real aggressive on them. San Diego Padres, they're the favorites. It doesn't stay put. Seattle Mariners are right there. Saint Louis Cardinals. As you mentioned, rose Alec is in there in the Dodgers. And a dog just really don't need them. But they're involved. Their priority is to get Luis Castillo, but those four teams are going to be the most aggressive. Yeah, so what I was hearing yesterday from teams was they consider the Padres to be the favorite. What your sense? Yeah, I agree with that. And they jumped out right away and called and I'm not sure where the Mackenzie gore injury, how much that hurts. As far as getting a deal done for a soda. But yeah. In Seattle has urgency too. I mean, I mean the playoffs is 2001. If they don't make the playoffs, I think there's going to be some heads rolling up there. St. Louis, it definitely needed a starter. And so I think the work is still a soda. But they're involved. I agree. I think padre is particularly with AJ proller. He's more aggressive than anybody. They do have two, $300 million players on the roster. I don't think they're designing them long term. But at least you'd have them for a couple of years, then go ahead and flip them in two years from now. What do you hear on Luis Castillo? Because I hear he's going to get moved. Yeah. I mean, the court of the market, that guy, there was nobody close. Montas with his injuries and everything else. And he could just deal for next year or two. So I think it comes down to the Yankees and Dodgers. I don't rule out St. Louis, I don't rule out the final Blue Jays. Yankees and Dodgers, Yankees, been sobbing over this guy for years. So he's really the perfect fit. What do we know about the Baltimore Orioles who one of the teams at the tipping point on whether or not to buy or sell? And if they did decide to sell, they would have some interesting players. They would, I hope they don't, you know, you should reward those players from training where they have in playing good baseball being around 500. So if I'm the or else I don't move a guy, unless I get a nice return back, don't just do it for a French prospect. It's not fair to guys in that Clubhouse. And singing or anything else. They got a little careful here without completely destroying them around. You've touched on the Dodgers in the Castillo conversation. Also feels like that they're going to be aggressive in the bullpen market, especially with some uncertainty around Blake trying in. Yeah, absolutely. And Kimberly has been good, but not great. About three weeks ago or someone could brewers to talk to teams, they want to listen on Josh hayter method the movement, but listen thinking they can still win without them and getting our pieces back. So that would be a guy. I'd have to pursue the movement. Yeah, I agree. And they need some bullpen help for sure. So late any help. Okay, two interesting teams, again, at the tipping point on whether to buy or sell Red Sox, San Francisco Giants. What do you got on those two teams? Giants, of course, if they decided to sell Carlos rodon, you have Jack Peterson. Yeah, two good pieces of move. I mean, rodan, you're probably a little Larry just because he's had some poor second half. He's not pitching his will now, as he was in the season. He's one $25 million in two years, but he can walk out of it for one year. It's just what he does. I think Jack Peterson just what he did for Atlanta would be a good fit for a number of teams. So yeah, they're kind of a no man's land there as far as what to do. Boston, I can see them. Okay, well, hang in a burger. We'll hang in the divers. Jenny Martinez. Those are some great bits for teams. Yeah, Carlos rodon, I kind of wonder, if in fact the Giants decided to become sellers, maybe he's the guy that the Cardinals land for their rotation. They're going to get somebody. I don't know if it's going to be montas. I don't think it's going to be Castillo because the division dynamic and the reds are not going to want to deliver him to division rival and watch him pitch for the next two years. Rodan would be a rental for the Cardinals. He would be you had solar mainly too much Cincinnati. So he could be a fallback option. But yeah, I just think there's such a drop off Patrick Castillo. I do believe that the resident trade him a division just in a sense where, you know, how many times you're going to face them anyway, and it's not like the reds are going to contend next year. They pay a price. I think they did movement in St. Louis.

"There were just, you know, there's no way of knowing except for making a dramatic inference based on the fact that the Padres promoted Ryan weathers, right? Instead of Mackenzie gore from the all site in 2020 when they desperately needed pitching, like that that was just an indication that something was wrong. And then there were lots of players who came out and it turned out that things like that were true. Then you had the guys who like Gabriel Moreno with the Blue Jays. Had a short exceptional track record leading into the year and then had more or less a full season to produce at the upper levels and reinforce confidence that not only that they were good, but that they were very, very good. Like belonged up here toward the top of the list good. No of you Marte is another one with the Seattle. Where spent 2019 in the DSL, Seattle handled Julio Rodriguez pretty conservatively in this manner initially and then did the same thing with Marte where even though he was physically mature for a player, his age he was down in the DSL in 19, and so we didn't really have a long state side. Look at him until 2021. And he performed as a teenage shortstop in full season ball. Big, strong guy with huge power. So there are definitely those players whose pro careers would have started during an otherwise lost season, the college hitters from the 2019 2020 draft class is basically where the performance is a big part of the way they are viewed. And then they didn't have an opportunity to do that until 2021. And I think maybe like a positive side, an example that comes to mind for me is Brandon Williamson, who's in the low 60s on our list with Seattle. And this was kind of a pop up guy in the 2019 draft, who was like a cold weather kid, transferred at TCU. It was a weekend starter after load dolo, so everybody got to see them. And, you know, big left hander through heart, but also really, really intriguing pitch data. It looked really interesting. It had a really good debut, and then we just lost 2020, obviously, and then he had a phenomenal 2021 in terms of strikeout rate, and it wasn't, it feels like he suddenly liked this out of nowhere guy in reality, it's just kind of a delayed proof of concept. And I think we have quite a few of those kind of players as well. I didn't intend to start off by talking about someone who is not one of the top 100 prospects in baseball or the top one 14, but Eric. Maybe later, but Mackenzie gore, you just mentioned Eric and I was looking back at your list from last February, which was topped by wander Franco, followed by Mackenzie gore and then adley Richmond. We know what happened to wander Franco. He made it to the majors and was incredible. We know what happened to adley Richmond. He is your number one prospect of 2022, spoiler. McKenzie is not on the list. And I wonder whether that has happened before, that sort of swift fall in the absence of a graduation or some kind of catastrophic injury for someone to go from number two to not on the list that is quite unusual. I would think. So what's the outlook for him now and can you think of any comps for that kind of year to year change? Yeah, I don't know. I think that the thing that changed is just our willingness to move off of pitchers, especially if you start to take on this trajectory. More quickly. Because I think that I wish I had done it earlier with AJ puck. I wish I had done it earlier with force Willie. I wish I had done it earlier with Brendan McKay, who, and we're talking about injury, for the most part, with those other guys, and I think I saw McKenzie gore as much as any other pitcher I saw during the course of 2021. He was in the mix for the list throughout the entire process. He moved to the back of the list in season last year. And then we sit down and we do a thing called distribution charts where we basically sit and plot out what we think the probability of a player falling anywhere along. The 2080 continuum would be and Mackenzie gore was pulled off to the side with a bunch of other players who we just didn't want to think about with relation to the other players. Royce Lewis sixto Sanchez, guys who have been hurt a bunch. I mean, we're just going to gut check where we thought they belonged at the very end of the process. And as we sit and worked on Mackenzie gore's distribution, just based on what he has looked like now for the last two years, most of our distribution fell into the 40, 45, maybe a 50 range rather than someone who we felt like the middle of their outcomes was. A 50, which is ideally what you'd want someone to be, someone who's reached the upper levels of the miners, that we want to have a better idea of what that guy is. There were reasons to move off of gore. Again, based on the inference from the 2020 season that something was not right and that was sufficient for him just not to be the second prospect in baseball. The Padres were generating literally no data from their alt site. Which was at the university of San Diego. There wasn't even a track man unit there. So there was no way of knowing. They opted out of the video sharing. There was no way of knowing what Mackenzie war looked like, really. But, you know, he has relied on command when he was the best pitcher in the miners in 2019. It was because he commanded a huge fastball like mid 90s with Carrie at Clayton Kershaw type of fastball. And then a bunch of okay secondary pitches. And for good pitches with a monster fastball and command from the left side, like that's a really good picture. And whether he just lost feel or it was in the weight room too much and stiffened up like some of that stuff may be subjectively to my eye looks like it could be true and maybe there's a way to do bikram yoga or something and some of that will come back and then maybe he was should still be on the hundred, but based on the way he has looked it is a relief risk fit without obviously great secondary stuff which just puts him behind the Brandon williamsons of the world. Yeah, and just a broader point on pitchers, this has to be one of the things that's changed the most in the years since your last public prospect ranking Kevin is just how pitchers have fallen from the top of lists in general. This is something I wrote about at the ringer a few years ago, but just eyeballing the list, you have one pitcher in the top ten, the Orioles Grayson Rodriguez at number three and then the next one is Shane baz with the rays at number 11 who's already made the majors. Of course, you have three pitchers in the top 20 prospects or the top 23 for that matter for in the top 25 or top 26. I mean, I guess that is a reflection of a few factors, right? It's the way pitchers are used now that just makes any individual pitcher kind of inherently less valuable just because of the innings totals that you're getting out of any one guy these days. And then I think there's probably also a greater recognition of the risk, not that everyone is pulling a Mackenzie gore. But injury risk, of course, is higher for pitchers than position players and we've certainly seen that reflected in the major. So is that what it is? I mean, there are ways to evaluate pitchers now that are maybe more telling than the tools that we had a decade ago, but it does seem like that's been a philosophical change. Eric and I talked about this on this week's.

"Of the ringer joined by Meg rally of salome. Hello. Well, it's been a dismaying week for many reasons. Most of which have nothing to do with baseball. Nothing like a literal war to put a labor battle in sports in perspective. So our thoughts are being pulled in many non baseball directions, which I'm sure is also the case for most of our listeners. And anyone hoping to turn to baseball to distract themselves with the pastoral scenes of spring training is out of luck, thanks to the lockout. So as we speak on Thursday afternoon, there hasn't been much progress in the CBA negotiations as we draw closer to the owner imposed February 28th deadline to start the season as scheduled, which we could take some time to bemoan, but there may be just as much to bemoan next time we speak. So we will table that for today. I think, and talk about the future. The wonderful future, which will surely be so much more harmonious, both in baseball and the world. We can hope at least we'll be able to watch adley Richmond. We hope. So in the meantime, it's prospect week at fan graphs in the prospect people on the staff have been busy pumping out rankings and lists and chats and interviews, which we will be talking about today with two of those people lead prospect analyst Eric long and Higgins and national writer and chip music coast, Kevin Goldstein. They are two of the three people along with tester eskin whose names are on the 2022 top 100 prospects ranking, which, as usual, contains more than a hundred prospects. We will get to that. Eric, hello. Huh? And Kevin. Hello and to you too. 110 111 112. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, why don't you mess up somewhere? Maybe it's these things, really. One 14. You remember that by quite a bit. So we are complete as by nature. What's your level of sleep deprivation? That question goes out to all of you, including Mick. It's better now. I will say, we were definitely much further along earlier in our process because it turns out when you have three people writing top 100 blurbs, they are able to get through them at a quicker clip than if it's just one or even two. But you know, there are a lot of little bells and whistles that you have to do to get the top 100 out and all sorts of wild checks that you feel you need to do four or 5 times. So it was a pretty sleepless night for me going into Wednesday, but I'm a little bit better caught up now because, you know, we didn't have to release it twice, so I got a good 8 hours last night. That was nice. All right. Excellent. I know that Kevin and Eric have gotten tons of rest and exercise in the past week from pre recording banter. I was down at three 30 ish the night before the hundred, but it's not like Meg were may has to wake up to run the site in the morning again. I just knocked out until I don't know and I just slept until I didn't need to anymore. And then last night was another like two, two 30 ish area. I've been winding down after writing with the watching people play magic the gathering on Twitch. But yeah, I'll hit a melatonin tonight probably and get back on something resembling a normal schedule. All right, well, the work has not been in vain. It's right up there on the site for everyone to see tons of great prospect content here. So just any number of places we could start, I suppose. I'll just ask big picture, I guess, because Kevin, you are no stranger to producing public prospect rankings, but it's been a while for you. I know you contributed to Eric's list last year, but that was more of a solo act and now you're back in the swing of things and you used to go to one O one at BP. Now you've gone to one 14 today. And in the interim, you, of course, spent several years working for a Major League Baseball team. So I wonder how that affected your philosophy when it came to your contributions to this list year lists look different because you were ranking for real world value and you had the inside the team perspective for some time. I think there's like 8 million reasons why I look at players dramatically different than I did a decade ago. Think about I'll be honest with you I haven't looked at this, I published ten years ago plus, but I imagine if I did, there's a reason I don't 'cause imagine if I did, I'd get really upset about it. Of course, I think everybody, anybody smart, I think, hopefully, doesn't look at players the way they did a year ago. Hopefully you're always learning. And I just think in the time between me doing lists at basal perspective. And now, you know, the biggest change and even the word biggest doesn't really do it justice, just the sea change in the industry. It's just the data that's now available to us about players as opposed to. Previous lists were pure eyeball scouting. And now we have so much data on players and so much of that data is really important and really telling about what a player can presently do that it shapes these lists in a way that's exceptionally different than what the way it used to be. I'm curious because in addition to having three of you this year instead of Eric and KG moonlighting, we also had a really different experience with prospect evaluation in 2022 because we had the benefit of a 2021 season. We'll talk about some of the individual players ranked on the top 100, but just more generally, I'm curious if there are any guys who stand out to you as having particularly benefited from having the 2021 season as a period of both evaluation and data generation as you guys were compiling this year's top 100. Man, specific to the to the hundred. If anything, there were more players who were probably hurt by the fact that they missed a year and then came back and then we had to solve what they looked like again. Mackenzie gore comes to mind where the inverse of that is true..

"Yeah, I guess the only, I guess the only serious am I remembering this right that the only series we had go a full number of games was that LDS between the Dodgers and the Giants, right? That went 5, but otherwise everything else wrapped up without having to max out. I guess if we're going to pick one series to have gone, the distance that that was a good one for us to have. But yeah, there are a lot of there are a lot of really great fun young players on Atlantis team and like you said it's like so cool to see wash get in the ring and you know. And Brian Snickers been in that organization longer than I've been alive. Wow. Which is incredible? Yeah, because how old you are? Right. But yeah, so, you know, if they can just get their in ballpark traditions sorted out we can soldier forth. But yeah, that was the 2021 season. I can't believe it's over. It's also hard to believe it is even begun. So I don't know, time doesn't mean anything. I'm not a help people with the time the time thing. Yeah. And so I don't know my clock feels my internal clock seems okay. Other people seem to be struggling with the internal clock. Yeah, I think that part of it is this is, you know, this will have been my first full year in Arizona. Gosh next week, I guess. And it has been very nice to have so much sun after really struggling with winters in the northwest. The last couple of years, but it does lead to some seasonal disorientation, particularly when target insists on going from Halloween to Christmas before the month of October is even over. So I think some of it is probably that for me. Yeah, what's with the big box stores, not catering to procrastinators, like some of us only think to care about like filling in their Halloween decoration holes as a garbage truck going by my house. Like closer to the day. So to show up at target and see Christmas trees is, yeah, I agree with you. There's something about that that I was like, yeah, it's 89° today, so. Yeah. And I think that, you know, I'm sure that there is as we continue to muddle through global supply chain issues that perhaps that has something to do with it, I don't know. But anyway, today is November 3rd. I know that today is November 3rd, and we've established that it's a Wednesday, so I feel like I'm coming out ahead. As you said it is full league season one last we talked to you on this pod foley had not yet begun, you have now had a couple of weeks of fall league. Yeah. What are your impressions so far? Relative to prior years, obviously we didn't have full league in 2020 because of the pandemic, but you've seen a number of these now. How would you gauge, for instance, the strength of the hitters relative to the strength of the pitchers? Right, so colleagues always hit or centric some of it is the type of talent that ends up coming here. It just tends to be better hitters than pitching so much of the pitching population here is dictated by just like who got hurt and needs innings. And the level of pitcher that is here this year is definitely lower than even the typical one on average. And so you and I went through a game together earlier this week. Yeah. And we watched like 27 walks or something like that. It was a lot of work. I think one of the teams walked 15 guys or something like that. Yeah. Maybe we saw 27 runs in like 15 combined washer or something. It was basically it was unwatchable baseball. Some of the effort level from some individual players and then some chunks of whole rosters, Scottsdale, is low. There are some players market Luciano who maybe should just be shut down or sent to the dome where, you know, like specifically in Luciano's case, there's just energy in lead on because there are fans who are not only retirees and scouts. And so the energy level in the Dominican winter league is something that might coax real effort out of some of the Dominican players who are just in the falling right now and not seem like kind of dejected. It is understandable for when a game gets out of hand because your pitchers can't throw strikes or get anybody out that you look up it's a third inning and it's 12 to two. And you just kind of pack it in for the rest of the day. I at least can sympathize with that, which is sort of the dynamic that's at play for some of the Scottsdale guys. And then some of it is that the raster construction has been flawed in ways that are more meaningful than I think people realize when some of these decisions were getting made. Again, not to harp on Scottsdale, but I'm gonna like to have an outfield where Matt walnuts in a corner, you know, someone else who's like a DH only prospect, basically like a hundred bishop, who has a 20 arm right now is in right field and then Richie palacios who's just kind of try and center field just to see is in center field like stuff can go awry in a way that impacts people's level. So we've seen some of that too. But in general, the following is still the fall league, it's perfect weather in a library like setting in which I can focus on, you know, really, really talented players. And so it has been fantastic. I do think that we are going to start to see real repercussions to not just like the quality of the pictures that we have here, but also some of them starting to leave. So like as we've been sitting here, I was texted that Mackenzie gore is done. And that's the game in Glendale today is only going to be 7 innings due to lack of pitching. So we're starting to see the repercussions of this are actually starting to have an impact on what's going to happen here. Ace alas he's gone, like there are lots of players who have started to leave the league as well. That'll make room for some fresh guys, which will be nice to have like fresh targets again for the last couple of weeks here beyond my regular plan, which is just going to mostly be the sea salt river. The rest of the way here, but yeah, it's still a lot of fun. The rosters are loaded more than a typical year. It's been a great to watch the hitters do their thing, but also there are some clear problems that are impacting the context that you look at the players in because the quality of pitching is bad. Yeah, I was going to ask about that as an evaluator. How do you sort of mentally adjust for that from an environment perspective when, you know, it's not like these hitters are not talented, they are, there's a reason they're able to take advantage of sub par pitching, but they are facing some pitching. So how do you think about modulating your reports based on guys that they're facing who are giving up like a football score every game? Yeah, you still want to evaluate the hitters in a certain type of vacuum. Like I'm still attentive to what types of pitches pitch type and location pitch type quality and location are the things that are still at play with every swing I see. There are just certain hitters whose swings play in certain parts of the zone, but have no skilled variability. And so they were like run into mediocre stuff. And then there were some guys who hit the ball who go who hunt the baseball in a way that is more varied and skillful around the hitting zone. And so that's still going on. It is just more of like my note, my notes have more of like this guy missed a hittable, this or that. Because there are just more hittable this or that in the fall league this year. If anything like some of the hitters you can't take advantage of the fact that the pigeon is bad, or like, you know, you walk east with the White Sox..

"Limburg of the ringer. Not too shabby. How're you doing pretty. Well we're both doing better than a player at wanted to mention briefly in our banter here you know how the concept of replacement level and our stats. That tried to measure. the wind. Value of a player are kind of predicated on the idea that a team can just reach down to aaa at any time and pluck up a player who could perform at replacement level. That's the basic assumption right. That's what it's all based on the continued employment by the padres of jake. Arrieta seems to that idea put and he's looked cooked for a while and perhaps he could change something so that he would not look so cooked. But that doesn't seem to be happening here and you would think that team in the thick of a playoff race would be able to fight someone anyone to take the ball. Who is not jake arrieta. It's like he's breaking war in a way. It's like my assumption. Is that you're supposed to be able to find someone better than jake arrieta. And we're talking about someone who is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Just several years ago so life comes at you fast ended his come very fast to ed so according to fan graphs were he is now negative point eight which is just a pittance allowed to baseball reference were which has him at negative two point four holy holiest. Yeah so that's based on runs. Allowed right he has had a lot of runs allowed to end his most recent outing. This week was against the giants at the giants. One is they always do and in this case they want because jake arrieta lasted three and two thirds or if that was part of the recent at least and he is not gone more than five innings in a game since may fourteenth and his last several adding three in two-thirds five innings. Three and a third four four. Four one and two thirds one and two thirds. Use that giving you length. He's not giving you effectiveness during the inning or three that he pitches i know the padres are in a tough spot but they have matchup with the cartels coming up. That's pretty important for the padres right now. And if you're a mix headstart do we have to question. War does work. If chick corea keeps getting starts i mean. I know that it's much more complicated than this. I think we have to wonder. Like if mackenzie gore has been kidnapped. Yes i mean. That's that's part of this that you know we talk eric about that. I understand that. There's a lot going on there but it is shocking. You know like we talked. In the beginning of the season. About the the vaunted depth of the padres and i think that when we did our minor league free agent draft made the point that you agreed with that lake. There's there is death but there was also a good deal of injury risk and that injury risk has manifested itself into injuries with that with that rotation and so they have had to rely on a number of guys who i think probably assumed far greater roles and they were anticipating on opening day. But yeah maybe nothing underscores that point quite so strongly his continued presence on this roster which is given the stakes and the the sort of nature of the and are wildcard like kind of unfathomable and a lot of ways i struggled to. I don't think it breaks war. Thank that it challenges. Some of the promises that were is based on at least how front offices engage with engage with the concept of guys. They're gonna run out there to eat. Some innings is jake area does employment on the padras perhaps an indication that we need a another waiver death. Yeah to spare people from this a spectacle of figure pitching at this point in his career. Yeah you're pretty far down that's chart. If used those that are out there it would be. What if he were eating innings but not really super not he's knipling innings a guest. But that's about all you can say. No one has a work. Quite as low as jared at this year. No one else is below two. According to baseball reference among pitchers that is hunter dosier injured. Kalmyk are down there too so it's not great it's a sign of the padres desperation at this point and obviously they are short handed and yeah. Yeah it's rough like you'd have to think you'd prefer a bullpen game at this point of course can't do a bullpen. Came every day necessarily so. That's where they are but yeah not being able to complete a trade that is something hits probably contributing to this. That's why they picked him up in the first place why they've stuck with him this long right. I mean you sit there and you think. Wouldn't you rather just like have chris not start and then see how deep he can go and supplement from there but then you get deeper into that bullpen annually. Can't can't keep running austin adams out. There starting a national controversy. So gosh they could. They could sure. Use like mike clovinger. Right or adrian more hone. It's like there are guys that are in the the padres orbit who would be quite helpful here but but injury bug has just been so bad for them. Yeah so many tommy john. Since it's just like so it's a lot of tommy. John's ben you know you look at their roster resource page and tommy john. John young have paddock with elbow inflammation. And then and then you go. Tommy john john not all the guys who need tommy john or have gotten tommy john or starters but some of them are and you know john john. Yeah so good. Luck against the giants. The cardinals the giants again. The braves dodgers and the giants again just a little light end to the patriots scheduled. Clearly there in great shape for this stretch. It's it's rough out there for the patriots right now. Snell is hurt to one patrick. Who was pitching well. They'll take anyone they just signed. Ross detweiler who was just released by the marlins they signed vince velazquez who is released by the phillies. It's like the saddest swap meet other teams put pictures out on the curb. The padres say what find they bring him. In at this point they would gladly sign up for replacement level pitching anyway. Don't wanna pick on the patriots too much. They're spinning plenty of plates. It's just that most of them are dropping and breaking. We should probably talk a little bit about better. Players just took depress everyone and remind everyone of their mortality. We will be devoting most of this episode to talking about teams like the patriots who are in playoff races right now. J. jaffe will be us to talk about team..

"I guess. I would go with the red sox. But it's a coin flip nationally last night. We saw the padres dodger play earlier in the year. It felt like the padres. You know had a lot of issues if they were working through But whenever they would face the dodgers you would energize the team. They played great against the dodgers. They lose the first game of that series last night in david. I was looking at it today. They're closer alvarado rockies innings and they are to the san francisco giants at the top of the nationally west. Yeah it's it's looking more and more like the reds might pull out that wildcard all the tough loss. To the brewers last night yeah three hits last snipe the rotations mass they had to go the bullpen. Gay bullpen game. That didn't work out. I don't know what can you say. This is not the padres team we anticipated. And we get it you know. The pitching injuries have piled up but the offense is not quite the powerhouse that it was last year to cover for the pitching. I don't lie further at right. Now what can i say but do you think of the firing larry rothschild. They're pitching coach. It sounds like a scapegoat situation. I mean look you know. It's it's the injuries ray. I mean i know the start of the year like we have this great deep rotation got mackenzie gore waiting to come up. We have ryan. Weather's waiting to come up. You know but now you know they're turning through. The starters are turning through bullpen games. Last time i checked. I think their penance pitched the most innings outside of tampa bay So those guys. Some of them were hitting the wall. They tried to finesse nelson lament through the year. That didn't work. Weathers was great early on. And he's been getting out. And so larry trial. I don't know they were pretty good for four months and now he's getting the blame so i didn't like it. Yeah and j singler explanation. The i thought about it more people though the team yesterday we said it was one hundred percent my decision. I you put that into broader context in baseball. What have we been talking about is so much of the last decade how managers general power has been diminished so much And on the other hand in front offices they're having more influence the idea the j. singler would basically just bang the pitching coach effectively on his own with nothing but a rubber stamp in the front office. Just doesn't pass the smell test. And look i get it. You know the way that staff has kind of gone through the ear. Darvish was unhittable early on that he struggled. Same thing. With weather's i mention blake. Snell has an era over seven on the road. He's been great at home so they haven't really solved his problems. So i get it. Things worked out But making a change this late in the year certainly unusual so yesterday the mets fall behind early against the giants down three nothing right away in that game and the fans. You could hear them every time. There's a pitching change or any kind of a. You know a key out made with runners scoring position. Mets fans are unhappy about things It's amazing how quickly this is falling apart. The idea that at the trade deadline. They aren't first place now. In the fourth week of august in their six and a half games out in the national league east and seven games out of the wild card. It's just about over fan. Grabs has been about five percent today. And i was getting ready for some radio hits this morning i thought you know. What if you're the mets now. The biggest challenge is trying to find bedrock for two thousand twenty two. Like what are you building around for. Two thousand twenty two. And i gotta say dave like it's not an easy thing to talk about moving forward like we know of the padres. Don't make the playoffs. We know that going forward. They can say well. You know what. We got manny machado. We've got fanta tat's junior We feel like darvish would be healthy for next year. We should have a pretty good lineup. And so this is what we're going to build on going forward. If you're the mets i don't know where the bedrock is whether it's the front office where you don't know if they're going to be changes you don't the field staff. They're going to be changes. We don't know. Jacob degrom is the which is i can understand why the mets wanna see in patriot for the end of the year to find out exactly where he is physically and i don't know what to make of that line which has been such disappointment this year. No that's a really good point. You're right in the padres. Basically have everybody back. So the mets though they're looking at what do we do with michael conforto. He's a free agent with marcus stroman. He's a free. Agent is davis really a third baseman hobby or by very interested in signing in the second bait. Peter lonzo okay. Is he the bedrock. But he's not really a star player. He hit some home runs. And that's valuable but he's not the superstar wasn't a rookie So i'm with you the catching situation. James mccann he's hurt now. They're kind of stuck with him. They're stuck with len lindores. You know huge contract and yeah degrom and syndergaard. Can they stay healthy. You know well and syndergaards a free agent year's end they have to decide what to do with him and and bomb as we sit here today. We don't know be said for procedure. Some kind because the mets haven't really told us what's going on. I really feel like the mets were so deep into looking for their bedrock. That really comes down to this. Steve collins ambition and he's money and that's the bedrock and look we know we compare them to mr steinbrenner. You know on this show a couple of weeks ago and we also know that for a lot of years with the yankees in the eighties and early nineties. Having all that money. How did that work out right. Not very well. We see the way players are aging in today's game. Signing older free agents is a big role the day sometimes that money they poured into linda. Or how is that gonna workout. He's supposed to be a franchise player along with the grab and there's huge question marks on both of those on what they're going to be in twenty twenty two the other day. I had a conversation a long excursion in the dugout of the angels before the literally classic and coincidentally we're talking with joel madden about the difficulty of managing a team that is struggling and look the angels are actually popping along at five hundred. They have some good games So he was talking. Generally i think it's sorta thinking back to his first days with the raise when they get blown out sometimes and he was saying boy. When you have that type of team and you're constantly down by five or six runs early in the game..

"Number two. We're just going to bounce around a little bit news. Notes injuries updates. What's going on across major league baseball. A little bit of everything right here in segment number two starting now with potentially the worst uniforms ever across any sport and this is a self proclaimed worst uniform in sports history. The pensacola crabs zillow's as what the uniform is going to be. They are the pensacola blue wa. Who's normally but they are going to be the crab zillow's for a day and what's a crab zillow. Well i'm glad you asked because the crab zillah is a mammoth sandwich that has been introduced by the marlins double a affiliate back in two thousand nineteen. It was named the best. New food item by ballpark. Digest that season and get this. It takes twenty to twenty five minutes to make so fans will sometimes order it via an email hotline before even getting to the games and to describe the sandwich itself. You're certainly you're gonna wanna type this into twitter. So while you're falling on twitter type in crabs zillow sandwich and get yourself a picture but it starts with a brioche bun which you know nice and fluffy as described by the executive chef travis wilson. Then they add lettuce and tomato. There's pork belly. Soft shelled crab. A big scoop of mac and cheese three five shrimp top born and then a big bam beauce a big bamboo skewer with a couple of crab hush puppies on the top. So it's about a foot tall. It's got pork belly. Shrimp hush puppies mac and cheese. I mean this thing. Has it all. So i don't know how the heck you're supposed to bite into it. I think you you eat it with a fork and knife or whatever way you're going to get into it but the uniforms themselves the crab zillow's they are bright orange and on the back side of the uniforms on the tail ends. Right on the gloomiest maximus. There is a huge crab. Face that will be dawning itself across the buttocks and there will be arms down the legs and So it looks like crabs are running on the field. And i. I mean man just merchandise manager. Ns triano couldn't believe what she was hearing from team. President jonathan griffith. She said quote it was a tumultuous rollercoaster of feelings. Are you kidding. always not kidding. How do i make this happen okay. It's not happening and team president. Jonathan griffiths said quote. Yeah unfortunately it was just a vision in my head. Which i'm not sure is a good thing. He said while laughing so it is self proclaimed the worst uniform and all of sports and you guys listening certainly check out pictures. I mean these. Things are not pretty. But i love it. Minor league baseball. I told out at triple eight game last week. It was ghostbusters night. So it's just a lot of fun across the minor league level so check that out when you get a minute there on social media but what else is going on across major league baseball. Well let's stay at the minor league level so the orioles the baltimore orioles promoted the number one new overall prospect in baseball since the raise called up the former top prospect adly rush meant he made his aaa debut on tuesday. He went two for four with a double in an rbi as a catcher and he helped his team with a one hit shutout so certainly called a great game. He had spent eighty games at aa before his promotion here to aaa and he will certainly be up at the big level. Maybe even this september but if they don't wanna adam to the forty man roster to manipulate his service time or i shouldn't say that right You know you're not allowed to say that or he's not ready until maybe what ten days into next year to ultimately get the call up which is what typically happens but it certainly looks like baltimore's got one of the best prospects coming up as he is number one overall and just giving you an update on the top prospects in baseball. Adly richardson. richmond is number one at aaa with baltimore. You have spencer torkelsson. The former number one overall pick for the tigers and number two. He's currently at aa for the tigers. Julio rodriguez and outfielder for the mariners at the aa level is number three. You have mackenzie gore the left-handed pitcher for the padres who's currently at the aaa level. And you have bobby. Witt's the fifth overall prospect for the kansas city royals at the aaa level. So you'll be seeing some of those guys at the end of this year if not every one of them next year in twenty twenty two but men certainly made a fantastic debut at aaa behind the dish. And like i said. I hope to see him up in september. But if he's not on the forty man roster. I think they'll wait until that. Deadline passes next year to ultimately. Call him up so now. Talking about the major league baseball level a few interesting news notes have become available in one out of san diego. Padres are flirting with the idea of moving shortstop fernando tattoos junior to center field when he returns from a shoulder injury. He's been practicing out in centerfield. They're hoping to. I'm kind of hide that shoulder injury allow him to be a little less active defensively for a few weeks out there at least until he gets to be a hundred percent. Now have anybody. Has anyone else in the past move from shortstop out to center field. Well there's been a couple of guys but not many of them in the middle of season hall of famer. Robin yount switched from shortstop to center field. After eleven seasons due to yet you guessed it a shoulder injury..

"And how you get her emails. Rick sports byline dot com email here from georgie. I think i've ever got one from georgia before. Hey the judge girl. Maybe georgia guy anyway. Georgie rick who has the best rotation in baseball. I've been arguing with my friend. He says it's the padres. I say it's still the dodgers your thoughts. Well thanks. i appreciate it. And that's a great question When you look at the dodgers obviously you're looking at the world champs and you got kershaw bueller as the one two punch to me. The big question is if david price is gonna pitch again because then you throw in korea and may or gone salon with the pods. Though you're gonna go lumet. Darvish snell paddock and morris. John i would. And then maybe mackenzie gore if they want to start his clock and they like him in spring that's a tough one but If if david price pitches. I would go dodgers if he does then. I'm going padres. i'm gonna go padres Because if you look at rheos and paddock. Which one would you rather have. And would you rather dustin adrian. More john If i could pick one guy out of all of them. I take kershaw. So that's something to be said but yeah that's my answer with price i'll go. La without price. Then i would go dodgers padres. You know you look at some of these other rotations around the league. And like i look in the american league. Is there a good rotation in the american eagle at cleveland. getting read of bauer and kluber and They still have bieber. Who's the best pitcher in baseball right now. Regular season crass krastio zach zach. And then what. Aaron civilian mckinsey. I guess other that in the american league. I can't think. I mean you look at the yankees really But i would say the next best rotations are still on the senior circuit if you think about it you know braves with freed morten andersen smiley and right and then probably nationals with shergar. Cordon strasburg and then fill out the rest. All right we do have our good buddy. Greg fitzsimmons been in studio many times joining us on the horn. And that's because he is in the hub city. Get ready to do. Helium there in indianapolis is a show tomorrow night. A couple on. Friday and a couple on saturday greg. My friend good to talk to you again. What's it like after all these months of zooms and rooftops and parks to actually get in a real club again. Well it's always good because I'm married and it's very difficult to cheat on my wife. When you're under certain. Get back in the clubs where i can put out my sexuality on stage and have come back to me with you. Know girls with daddy complexes and even some men there's You know there's some that if they're small enough. I have no problem with that small if they're small enough in what way. Well i wanna hairless man. You know he's gotta be. He's got. He's got a field gentle. And so gotta be girly. He's gotta be the encourage. You don't like a bowler. Like if i had to seek of the sport that i could make love to a man. It would probably be badminton or bowling. So you're not into the harry. Serbian cabdriver no. Not unless he's driving me to a laundromat where i can find men. That do their own laundry. Gotcha do remember something you told me years ago and it's not i do remember you telling about hitting the guy in the head with mike but i remember you telling me that when you're onstage that you've got dozens of hot women staring at you and that's something that doesn't go unnoticed and i get it. It's it's such a shift in the paradigm of being a ball fifty four year old. Who walks down in venice beach where there's just huns of beautiful women in their twenties and they look through me they they don't even look away from me. It's it's is if i'm a ghost and such chanting on stage and he seem within the alpha male. I'm the guy there's a beauty to that isn't there. I think so. And and you know people always said women are women have always said that they're attracted to a guy with a sense of humor. And i think that's only true when you're onstage offstage. They're always going to go with the bat boy. They're going to go with the quarterback or the guy with the leather jacket. And the funny guy we just do like we do the four play where the guys that make them laugh all night at the bar at the party's stand around the keg but then when they leave it's on the arm You know a guy with a motley crue t shirt. That's like i remember the sinbad joke. About how if you're really good good-looking girl and you're making fries at mcdonald's that guy is into you but if you're really good looking guy making the fries at mcdonald's they're like you better shut up and make my fries. You can't partly making into sex in any way you know and That's why it's it's also like you know people want guys want a girl who super hot but they don't think about the fact that like yeah you marry her and she's a fry she's a frie- shift. You know you gotta work a little bit harder. She's smart you find a girl who's not as attractive. But he's got an mba and is a type a workaholic and then you can kick back and just watch her hustle a good plan. I also remember it's funny It was one of these ricky lake type of shows where they brought out. This guy who was about looks like jon hamm and he was wearing an italian suit and he talked about being a doctor and then they ask the women and the crowd which was ninety nine percent women. he's single. Who wants to go out with them and everybody raised their hand like two hundred women and then they said well. Let's look at israel job. And they showed him he was a garbage man and they showed him dumping trash in his overalls. And they go now. Who wants to go out with them and there are only like maybe ten like what happened. What happened right. Isn't that ironic. Is all wise. Do you to take out the garbage. That is irony there. Yeah i there was also jon hamm actually on s. and l. One time they did this great sketch where they was him. And i forget the guy that was In a sketch with him. But like i i. The guy is like super polite and he goes tina fey and he's like Oh eighteen You know it's been really good working on this project with. He just going to see if you know if you wanna you wanna go out and get a cup of coffee after work one day. And she's like this is sexual harassment bug off creep and john hand comes in and he's like fondling her and saying discussing things and she's just giggling.
