"Figures. Clearly that helps in recruiting. What are your biggest concerns about how this that that part of it is being used follow it. We all have to figure out what that means. Our quarterbacks don't like a lot of money are quarterbacks. Being mentioned for the heisman our quarterbacks that preseason player of the year in the acc so when you start looking at it everybody's gonna start looking at their brand but the the market values better for those better off in those in recruiting that is act words because they've cut more people trying to get them and when you get on your campus then you've got to have those relationships in newport people worrying about what happens in the locker room. I don't see that being a problem. Everybody on our team knows the right guards. Not going to make as much money as sam out. Those are those are facts. That's pretty clear but in recruiting. I think we've all got to figure out exactly what that means in universities across the country are trying to figure it out if you want to be competitive but you still got a play within the rules. And that's something that everybody's got their compliance teams looking at very closely thank goodness that allow the hospital. Guys can't make any money till their abilities up. So it gives us all a little bit more time to figure it out between now and signing date but that that day's going to becoming where yet to separate one is recruiting inducements as compared to what name imaging lightness is. I honestly can't answer that. I don't think compliance people across the country can answer yet. So we're we're all looking for that answer. We understand what happens to our team. We got into the locker room. I think that's all settled and we're good but still. There's a lot of questions to be answered in. Recruited conversation with coach mack brown at the university of north carolina coach. All the best. We look forward to seeing you very soon. Thanks paul appreciate. You have a great fault. Thank you very much. The best ever mag brown joining us from north carolina and we will take a short. Break your phone calls right around the corner..

"You spent such a long time at texas and even after you left you were still in ambassador and i know how many close friends you have out there. But but but i think we're all curious to what what you think of the move because they're struggling right now I mean since you left it has been hard to watch the university of texas as you. Well know talk for a second. About what what we what they expect to get out of this other than a lot of money which already had all. I really haven't talked to any of them. I would think just listening to a across the country that in presents all of these moves are about money and securing your your place at the highest level of sports long-term and obviously most of. That's a tv money but you also The the better schedule that you have the more enticing. It is for season ticket sales fans. But you gotta win. And i think that's where all of this comes down to if you if you don't win regardless of whether you're at texas palmar are ole miss or north carolina clemson. It doesn't work. Because i've tried it both ways and people like it better when you went coach. You mentioned a minute ago about the expansion. You want to see that slow down it may. It may already be because as you your coaching right now. But those of us we talk about it every day college. Football is really In an upheaval. What would you like to see Once the dust settles in relation to the playoff see eight teams. I would like to see the. The five conference champions have an automatic bit because i really was raised that a championship should matter and it puts more credence back in their champions. And then i would like to see the the top three teams outside of that in the poll get a spot and then from that point forth let them play it out and we would figure it out. I would also if i was in a group of five. I would want to have my own national championship. I'd have known heisman. I would have a separate but this award winner and and lombardi award winner up because it's going to be very difficult for that group of five team where they would be seated to have a chance to to win the national championship if it changes from now and just isn't a january six bowl and everybody wants to win a national championship. I would watch two great teams from group of five play. I would watch a playoff in group of five. We watched the f. c. s. r. f. c. fcs but so we're going to watch those teams. We love football but to me. Have a clear national champion. I don't know that if you go back and look at the last five years. There were twelve teams with a chance. But i i would go back and have a. We've had four. let's look at. Let's see where that fits. And then i would separate group of five from the power five to give them a better chance to have their own program coach. If we don't get that and we end up with these mega conferences. Which looks like we're heading in that direction. What what what's going to happen to the middle of the pack to the lower tier because you mentioned the group of five can't compete with you know very well. There are a lot of schools in major conferences that struggle to compete now. And you add texas and oklahoma or someone else it's going to be. Even harder is not absolutely paul. And i worry about that for our game and those universities when we were looking hard at the the pact well they were talking about texas texas tech and they were talking about oklahoma oklahoma state and then i talked to some of the other coaches that at some of the other schools and said that they were all saying. We'll help us. And they all felt like they would be for five and they were just be more conferences and they would be playing at the same level that we're playing now so i think for great fans that watch your show. I think for those fans out there. I think we will see some schools. That just can't have enough money enough facilities enough commitment sell enough tickets be attractive enough for the tv contracts that they will lose who they are and drop down another level finally coach. I do want to get your thoughts. We are now to almost too much into. Nifl how do you think it's going to. It's going okay on our team. The question will be to me is recruiting. They say that you can't use a for nfl that it's really confusing. There are no data lands but for our team. We've got group licensing Sam hours gonna make more money than the rest of them. They all understand that. I have told them. It's more about your ball than your branding. Because if you ain't playing good ball brother you ain't gonna give brandon and they're not gonna pay you guys so just to understand that that's facts and i'm also told them that ninety plus percent of you're gonna make your money on the back end with your degree so we're we're card and school work hard to get relationships with alums that will help hire you when you get out. But i think we're seeing paul at settling down because the kids are realizing everybody may get some money with group licensing. Some guys may get a dealer to make a little money. Nobody's going make a living outside of those two three guys on your team that that that are the high profile is that everybody wants to represent their business. I said final question but let me let me. Just follow that up with the final question. Because you mentioned recruiting and two months ago or a ago. I should say nick. Sabin came out at the texas high school coaches association and talked about how his quarterback was nearing a million dollars..

"Here is the paul finebaum. Show our four podcast and we welcome you back. Final hour has arrived and it always gives all of us great pleasure to welcome coach. Mack brown to our are so many conversations over the years But texas at espn and now of course. North carolina coach saw the other day. You ranked pretty high everybody's high on your team and your quarterback but you're you're coach so you i'm sure you take these things in stride great to see you first of all all great to see you again. Thanks for all you do for for college football. It's fun time of the year. We're all excited. Nowhere fighting covert again but hopefully we'll have full houses and can really enjoy it. Yeah paul we're we're kind of the the new guy on the block. You look at alabama and you look at clemson. You look at ohio state. They bought a house in the college football playoff neighborhood. We've kinda rented one we got in last year. What renting a little bit got back out. Now we're trying to get back in and what we've gotta do is step up and prove that that we're supposed to be there because really after those three. There's been a few that whether it's notre dame texas oklahoma lsu but not people on a on a regular basis so it's been a three man race. Georgia stepped up in their some. But we would like to join that group and that's what we're trying to do and to do it. Modern day put quarterback and the best four quarterback's probably last year in the playoffs. The same thing with the nfl. Probably the best quarterback may be to ever play won the super bowl so as as we sit here and look at it. You've got to have that trigger guy. Tama chance to win. Paul because up into production scoring points is more important than ever before and the last time. North carolina was ranked as high a teller. Name brown was also the coach. So i i'm curious. I know you're you're you're not done but you've accomplished a great deal and i feel like it's fair to ask how satisfying that must be so far all it's been great. I love my time with you and our team. Espn abc and at a time. Where i didn't have a team after having one for thirty years it was really important for me to a group that i enjoyed and talking about this this wonderful game so that was a a wonderful five years and it sounds kind of corny but when i miss the most as mentoring kits and team meetings and one on ones and trying to lift the young up and i heard president bush say one time i said why do you want to be president right before he was elected and he said i like fixing things and i really think that. That's probably what what excites me. I'll by helping a young guy get from here to there. I like helping the north carolina who had two wins. Have the pride right now to be considered a top ten team and all of that right now is really rewarding for me. Talking to coach mag brown. There's so much happening in college athletics right now. Other than what we're about to see on the field last year it was cova. And i would ask you about that because we're two weeks away and you have a big opening game we're going to see full stadiums But you're also somebody who who has has a healthy level of concern about the health and wellbeing of everyone. What are your concern levels right now as we get ready for the season. I think we're going to have to learn to live with cova and we can't just shut everything down so let's be safe. Let's be smart. I don't like wearing a mask. But i need to buy my age. Group is at risk obviously sar players about in. We had one player missa game last year because the code and we knew a lot less about it last year. We didn't have the vaccine last year at one time. We weren't even sure about mass. We weren't sure that touching football might might cost us a young person. 'cause they got sick so i think we're much more educated. The vaccine helps. We understand what we've got and now we gotta follow through with it so we can have a safe year. But i'm really hopeful that we have fans in the stands and fans have to be responsible. Make sure that we can continue to keep it that way. And hopefully we get back to some of the pageantry and and traditions that we've had with our bands cheerleaders walks and all of those things and have a more normal year even though it looks like for for the near future for sure. We're at least going to be wearing masks coach. You know. I know you're north carolina now but it's almost hard or difficult conversation about college football without talking about your championships texas and some very very close calls as well and i think we'd all be interested in your thoughts on what we've been talking about here obsessively for the past four weeks and that's the idea of the university of texas joining the southeastern conference. Call it's been really interesting to me because we were not days. We were probably hours away from joining the pac twelve at one time while i was at texas and then. Espn came in for network happened and the big twelve stayed together but the big twelve head colorado nebraska. They allowed them missouri and am laugh so that there was a lot of changes throughout the big twelve. And i would hate to see the big twelve. Go away. Because i had sixteen years. There is part of that conference and texas and oklahoma. Joining the sec. Caught me off guard and a lot of friends out there that it was never discussed till till i rent it back down in the middle of acc media. Day and jeremy sharp direct communications walked up. Showed me right in the middle of my interviews that texas and oklahoma relieving he said get ready here counts about really so. I think what we're seeing. Paul is with some of the tv contracts being renewed over the next number of years. I think we're gonna finally see the mega conferences that people have talked about for years. Is it three four. Is that a two sides of sixteen as two sides of ten so you've got twenty teams in the league and then you have a championship. And i don't think the twelve team play awful. Probably fly with all these changes. I think that won't be pushed behind. 'em we'll start looking at it again. I'd still like to see us. Go to eight before twelve. But i do think we'll see a group of super conferences on our lifetime and i worry about some of those teams that won't be included in that group. Thank goodness north carolina's a global brand. And we've got a lot of great sports and we're good enough in football and and hopefully getting better than we've been great basketball. I think will be included in whatever. But i hope that we see the acc. Be one of those mega conferences. I know that the acc would love that notre dame and that would help our brand. But i think we'll see changes. It'll be very interesting to see how those happen..

"And that's what you got a credit The coaching staff or for their fortitude and inside hanging in there and working through these issues as they pop up, you know, But as the season went on, this team really settled in to obviously being a power running game and then Play on play action off the running game. Simplifying the offense, not in a negative way, but just making it very decisive for Baker, and once he bought into that, man, he really started playing well, You got two dynamic rushers in the backfield and you know that's the kind of team I can gain some moment. Um in the playoffs. I mean, it's no, It's no secret that the winning formula come playoff time is play good defense and run the ball. And the Browns are doing both of those right now, So it's gonna be interesting to see how far they go. Bill before you got to the NFL. You are a proud Texas Longhorn alum and Big news out of long or nation. Steve Sarkisian coming in his head coach and Tom Herman being fired first. I wanna ask you about that. We think about that move, and then you also Played for Mack Brown while he was a Texas If I'm not mistaken, and he had a resurgent with that USC team I love to get your thoughts on both of those where you thought of both Mack Brown success and then you know the hiring of new head coach. Well, there's no I was actually leaving. Texas has not got there. But I got to know Mac through the years that there's there's uh, no surprise that he's having such six. At North Carolina. He's an unbelievable man. Players love them. Recruits just wanna play for him. And so the turnaround in North Carolina eyes not unexpected by anyone who knows Mike Brown, and so I was really happy to see Success he had this year regarded GT. I've been down in South Texas deer hunting and literally was off the grid and so started driving back in today and Already getting all the news and you know, it came as a unexpected. News, but you know as a diehard burnt orange Gotta have the Longhorns back on the national scene type of guy if the administration feels that that's the best thing for the program. I'm all for it. You know, it's there's high expectations of Texas. I think college football is better off in Texas is A Nelly team. We've had our struggles recently. And I think You look at what New coaches pedigree, the kinds of quarterbacks he's been able to grow to groom the kinds of teams he's been around, obviously, most recently in Alabama with the kind of talent there and learning from the coach like Nick Saving I think Longhorn fans have a lot to be excited for. Bill before we get you out of here. This'll is out of left field. How? What percentage of your closet? Do you think it is? Orange between Browns and Texas Texas gear. It's a fair amount, obviously a different shade of orange and I won't say which one I like better, But Orange definitely has a prominent place in my family's home for sure, I would imagine Phil Johnson. Thank you so much for being here with us on prime time we appreciate it. Thank you. I don't know how much Mark her Xlix closet differs from giant blue to Boston. What is it? Scar? And if you at least play functional football the next couple of weeks here, guys, I really think that you know you'll get, you'll get players back yet. A lot of receivers go down this year, including their number one receiver. And Wood structure the off season around him with the design on him being the guy but also have you know an interesting plan B in case he reverts back or just doesn't stagnate or doesn't develop the way you need him to. So The whole season. Nobody gets that. But in terms of getting a real chance, I'm with you. Are you in or you out? All right. Sorry to report, especially for different D cell and from Miami's part of you know, Tiki and 30 Mojo this weekend, Kane's usually worked, but it did not. After we had their head coach made ideas on the show. On Friday, you NC's offense totaled almost 800 yards on Saturday, 62 to 26 of Blowout win and they had basically the two top backs basically ran for almost 550 yards and FBS record for the most rushing yards by any teammates in a single game. It was also UNC, his first win over top 10 opponent. In 16 years been awhile. Good for them, although tough to see Miami take that kind of Adele, but a good win for the program for the Tar Heels in a route North Carolina under Mack Brown's in a better position. Contend for the football playoff in the next two years. Then the Canes on their Manny Diaz. I'm going to stay in bounds, bt I think at least one of these guys Michael Carter, Devante Williams. I think they're both juniors. One of them's.

I get everybody Sean Kelley Broadcasting from the carriage House Studios in Madisonville, Louisiana. Alongside Barry Jones from the German town studios up here. Memphis, Tennessee eight. Nate. That's the mark between these two teams old times since Miami joined the A CC. And here today, Barrett All teams we're playing conceivably, for the same thing. Ah, better legitimate shot. I want you to do your six but for the Orange Bowl itself. Well, there's no doubt that the enormous game and I know the Orange Bowl means a lot to both of these teams. Is your two ascending programs that have things headed in the right direction. Remember, even though North Carolina has those three losses in Miami on, Lee has one Assuming that Notre Dame and Clemson are both in that college football playoff. The Archibald will then look to the A C C team that is ranked the highest and I would think a head to head battle would would be in a lot of go a long way to see which team that might be. Miami. 81 has won five in a row. North Carolina's coming off of an impressive win over Western Carolina. They've won three of their last for their 73 now. Under Mack Brown overall under Mack Brown Carolina is 14 and nine on Lee, One of the nine losses are by more than seven points. That was earlier this season against Notre Dame. Everything else has been in by a combined 32. That's an average of four points for lost. We expect a close game here today between Miami, North Carolina barely also expect a high scoring game between the Hurricanes in the Tar Heels. Well, there's no doubt I think we're gonna see a lot of points. Today You have two of the best offenses in the A. C. C. So this is definitely one. If you like points, this will be a fun one. Two quarterbacks will shine for us today. Derek King is responsible for 70% of Miami's offense here in this his first season in Miami Gardens, Sam House put together an unbelievable software a year. He's the engine, of course. For North Carolina with that barrel, Let's get right to your game playing here for this afternoon's ballgame. We'll start with Miami. I think Miami's gotta find a gentleman..

"Of North Carolina. In 2000 and one he became the voice of North Carolina football and basketball in 2011. Earlier this week, Jones and I talked about today's big showdown between the Irish and Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. Jones. It's clear that Mack Brown is doing a terrific job and his return as the Tar Gil's head coach. Why has he been able to turn things around so quickly? Yeah, Jack, I think when Carolina hired Mack Brown My guess is the farther away. You got from Chapel Hill. The more head scratching occurred and people said Wait, who and I thought he was out of coaching, or I thought he was on TV. I think the closer you got to Chapel Hill. The more sense the higher made for a couple of reasons. Number one and most importantly, background understands North Carolina. Of course, he was here in the 19 nineties and built a Tar Heel program that was one in 10. In his first two seasons up to top five in the country. By the time he was finished, and I think a lot of people would argue that 1996 in 1997 those tutorial teams are two of the best ever and Carolina football history. So he's done it before he understands the area on guy Think Also, Carolina badly needed exactly what Mack Brown is one of, if not the best at and that is an upgrade in the personality, the openness of the program, the relationship with the high school coaches in the state. And Mack Brown immediately delivered all of those things. And you know this from being around Notre Dame so long, I think, especially in college. The fit between a coach and a school is so important and you can have a great coach. But if he doesn't quite fit in the personality with the town and the university that it's hard for it to work. Mack Brown just fits. He fits in Chapel Hill again. He I think he understands the culture. He understands the area. He understands the importance of the high schools here. And he brought that credibility with him as well. It's a national championship winning coach. He's in the Hall of Fame, see at all those things together, put together a really good staff and can't ignore what's happened on the field. He got a really good quarterback to change his commitment from Florida State to Carolina, and that's made a big difference, too, of course. In that quarterback has helped North Carolina's offense rack up so many yards, their fourth in the nation of 563 plus yards per game. That's tops in the A. C. C second in the conference in scoring and that quarterback you mentioned Sam Howard. Incredibly, he leads the HTC and eight offensive categories. I don't ever remember that from a quarterback. How good has Sam been? He's been really good, and I think what's really been impressive Jack is is that he had a great freshman year, and I think you see that where guys have great freshman years and then everybody gets a little more tape on him and Maybe the expectations get a little bit higher, and it's hard to meet that in year two, the same house done a terrific job with that, and I think also Carolina's been able and willing to run the football extraordinarily effectively this season. And Sam. How's been okay with that? He hasn't been the guy who said, Hey, I need to get my numbers. I need to get my touchdowns has been very much that he wants the Tar Heel offense to succeed. And if he needs to throw for 550 yards and six touchdowns like he did against Wake Forest For Carolina to win. Editorials have that capability. But if he can hand the ball off to Davante Williams into Michael Carter and spread the ball around and Carolina can move the ball effectively and score that way. He's very happy with that as well. And Mack Brown has told Sam how multiple times the most important stat for a quarterback is wins and losses. I think he and books a great example of that. And Notre Dame that that's how you are remembered as a quarterback. And I think Sam Haleh has taken back the heart and is really about winning first stats. Second while you were doing your preparation for this broadcast what jumped out to you about this Notre Dame team? Well, the defense of numbers are absolutely and I think the really interesting part about those defensive numbers, Jack and this is going to sound maybe, like I'm not saying something nice, but I promise it is. There aren't a ton of sacks. There aren't a ton of turnovers force. I mean, there's good numbers. But the face Notre Dame just makes you punt. They just They just don't let you get yards that they're not necessarily taking the ball away 100 times and getting pick sixes or we're putting your way behind the chains. They just don't let you run your offense and to me. That's what's been most impressive is how they just line up and they play their defense. And they say you bring whatever you want to bring to us, and we're going to stop you, and they've done that to everybody, whether it was South Florida or whether it was Clemson. That they've been able to stand up defensively. And so to me. That's been the most impressive thing when getting ready for Notre Dame, But I think also when you have a quarterback like Ian Book Do and similar to what we were talking about was saying how He understands what he needs to do to help Notre Dame win, and that's all he cares about. If that's throwing for 400 yards, that's fine. If that's rushing for four touchdowns, that's fine. That's handing off 40 times. That's fine, too. And so When you have a guy who is the winner that in book is a quarterback and is willing to do whatever it takes for the team to win. I think that makes such a difference. So that combination of a veteran Quality winner at quarterback with a really skilled and talented defense that that's why Notre Dame's ain't no and number two in the country. Carolina could score enough to pull this one off What has to happen for the Tar Heels to pull the upset? I know this is going to sound really boring, but I think it's run the football. I think, whichever team runs the football more Is gonna have the better chance to win. And if you look at Carolina's numbers this year to two games that Carolina run for the rushed for the fewest yards, where the two games they lost to Florida state into Virginia. Carolina has by far Bennett. It's best when those two running backs Devante Williams and Michael Carter are involved, active and successful. Jones. Thank you so much for the time had a great call. Thanks so much, Jack. Always great to see. I hope you're doing safe and healthy and hope we get to see each other in person soon. I do, too. Thanks again When we come back, folks will take a look back at this date in Notre Dame football history but subsist about you're listening to fighting Irish football. We say big money with our progressive home and auto bundle and used the cash to take a family vacation. What? Who's up for a luau? This is not a real testimonial..

"I used to drive all the time from Baltimore to see my work with Wizard must be a lot. My favorite part of the show where we talk about stuff, all guys. I don't know that's still part of your repertoire. It was really fucked up. It's true, right? We know a lot of I don't know you've got for the worst. Yeah, This is the guy who plays on more than one team and he's going up on the bench going. Damn same thing happened Tuesday night in my other team. Mack Brown is joining us for a few more moments. We're going to come out of this on the other side. And when we do I want to have been someone who helped somebody during this time of crisis. That's what my goal is right now. The four sack already by Washington, London Fletcher is joining us when they feel behind nothing. I was like, man, what the heck, you know, here we go again. But what I love was team takes on the identity of your head coach, and they would say, open ride and pile that dial soap and we would do it. Spit it out. And they say, Okay, you're good wash the rest out, and that's how they washed our mouth out with police spokesman Charles joining us. I get that right if you do the same things that everybody else does you get the same results from all the guards in a way that you start indeed. Coming today, my little baby peeping peeping nine times for that big old guys. Come here. You It feels like George Way off. It's the site of a backboard fact that the Clippers were built a win right now and didn't even make the conference finals is a catastrophe. The Clippers will always be differs. The only thing worse is not seeing it. For what it wass one of the biggest joke jobs ever. Clones of literally like Hello. Yeah. Elgin Baylor, please. Hello? Yeah, Elgin. You know, today's the draft, right? Elgin was not amused. Jericho is just all about taking care of your body. I've had some good coaches lately that have helped me kind of my game of and it's just.

"In the mountaineer and the tar heel at this many at one time and is a bucky brooks notebook this is the Bucky Brooks great here right you can't see me right now I'm writing all this down because says at all packing Justin feels he sent packing I'm sure there was another five star quarterback there was on the team that he also wrestled the job away from inside the matchup that we care about we've got APP state traveling to take on North Carolina my school is your school it's going to be a fun game man and we are so we are so pump that we've got a chance to talk to both of the head coaches ahead of this matchup and first up is your former head coach and once again the current head coach at North Carolina Mack Brown here's our conversation. Dj is always a pleasure when I get to talk to my own coach my old coach Magara Hall of Fame Coach National Championship coach a guy who is now back at my program Carolina bringing it back would row how you doing great bucky how're you guess we're great great great is a tremendous opportunity to talk to you especially this time of year because we're in the process of discussing team building philosophies on how you build a winning program just based on your experience what is it every ship program look like Bucky I think it starts with communication and it sounds frail but it it if you can't learn to talk the the other than you don't know who each other are you don't know about your background and then you can't build up trust and respect without trust and respect you got nothing and then you've got to have a common purpose and the end our common purposes we WANNA have fun because not enough people are now in our society we WANNA win all the aims obviously we want to graduate guys but we also want them to better prepare themselves for life after football so when they know that everything we do is for one of those three purposes for purposes that's who we are but we also had everybody sit down and tell her story and so many times now with new coaches coming in they're bashing the preview his coach and we don't have any players and they're all covering the rear ends and and we thought it's more important to worry about the seniors because they haven't had a good experience last the years tell these seniors we're GonNa win now but let's get to know each other we actually sat all told her life story and we'd say bucky where're you from tell me about your parents tell me about your siblings who who do you respect most in this room on this team and why and what's the biggest hardship you've ever had in your life and and it was really interesting how honest everybody was and I think that really helped us get off to a good start coach that time he took away from the game going to do in the television and getting a chance to to really study college football across the country was there anything during that time period that you kind of kept maybe a journal or some of the side it's a matter of fact comeback I'm GonNa make this change or that change and how beneficial was that period for you dj it was really beneficial in bucket can tell you note taker so that's I sit and listen and I try to write little things that make a difference in my life I didn't know if I'd go back coach or not but I am passionate about the game and coaching and playing and playing ears and and it was one of the harder things for me at ESPN because I love the game and the coaches in the kids so much that ESPN would get upset that I wouldn't bash somebody and I said he's killing himself the man's working himself to death not working but he's killed himself so it's hard to win so I think I learned a number doc things number one I learned a lot more about the media and that you guys have a very difficult job and you're not trying to bash coaches and you're not trying to get on the inside and make something up that's not factual you hard jobs hard every day to find something that nobody else knows that's of interest to them so and you gotta be honest with you she do so that really helped me from that perspective secondly I I saw that most coaches are are miserable they're not happy there they're fighting ever the fighting everything they're all worried about getting fired they're all worried about losing and and they're not enjoying the journey in the game and the kids and it wasn't as much fun for me Friday night but term young coach is more than just being miserable I got it Texas when you have to win all the games and if you don't you know your identity gets hurt and you're not supposed to be you know coaches is funny you talk about that because I've heard you on other interviews talk about having fun and how important it is to have fun and to make sure that you the process one of the things that I've always learned from you is it's about the players you've always been a a player lead coach you want to play it's kind of run too program when you think about uh players and players that you want to play for you what are the core traits of those guys bucky it's a it's a great question I won't good people that have good hearts that have passion and pride of in their lives and the pride that they're they're not gonNa let you down our guys were they played so hard for the first two weeks and probably beat teams that are more talented than we are in shocked everybody and shocked us a little bit wake forest was a team that played harder than we did in the first quartered first half and I walked in Sunday night ask the guys at just like at halftime I said we are who we are so if we're not going to play with passion we're we're going to get it if that's who you are that's okay but it's it's not who I thought we were and then fight their guts out and come back to one second left in the game they have a chance to win has made proud of them for that so on Sunday we walk in and I say Bucky why why did we lose tell me why we lost and to a man all the senior said we weren't as passionate in the first half as as we were in the first two games and I said so why is that I said I don't know coach we just we felt it during the week you told us during the week but it didn't happen we just we couldn't we couldn't get through it I said well we've got you APPALACHIANS GONNA play with a lot of energy on Saturday you've got every it's hard to do and one of the hardest things for me guys is to figure out why it's so hard to play or hard every week and that's the other thing I learned what for five years as I watch teams play hard there were flatter than play really steak and and the why can't we just go play and a hard one for kids this age but it's a it's something that is frustrating so to answer your question by the I won't guys that care and I told them they're going to get everything I've got every day within the rules among give them everything I can give them and I want it back I want them to give me everything they've got every day I don't won't be honest warm hardworking and I want them to be tough and all of those things will help them have a better life later coach you got a really good young quarterback there for the tar heel else and when you look at the great teams the National Championship team sticks out to me that you're on obviously had a very special quarterback there in Vince young the way the game is played right now Oh in college football and what are the three or four core requirements you have to have at that position to excel number one Colt McCoy to digest so we run their about something we we we ended up looking smart because of those two I think number one thing is you gotta be able to lead other people you've got to be able to do that because when you're on the field and you're down you don't know who your quarterback is you don't know who you are team isn't until you have a close game they come from behind him web so that that's that's keeping me the second thing is I feel like you've got to be able to move your feet also there there's usually better athletes on defense than there are rushing the passer than there are blocking for them so you're going to have to move around sound are you going to get knocked down a lot and then the third thing for me is is you gotTa know what to do mentally you've got you gotta be a workaholic thank you gotta be able to hear every day and and be obsessed with the game and last would be accuracy I remember when when Colt McCoy was playing forest we'd be at practice number hit the ground it would never be on the ground and and then I go with lesser quarterbacks I'm seeing balls against the air bucky and we're we're not throwing it to the right place the Home Minister Against Sam Sam's a guy that the balls on the ground very seldom you know coaching and watching salmon and watching the team it is amazing to watch the team from one year to the next we talked what championship program looks like but when you step in and your hand or program where they've been down they've been beat down a little bit they haven't won how do you teach a team how to win it's also an interesting question about the third week we were here one of the seniors raised his hand I've been giving pep talks knew that and he said Yeah but how do you win hey how you win I thought Oh never been asked that before by player so what what you do is you you have a plan you have a process she go through and you don't alkaline about winning you talk about doing the things right that are important and we say little things really and truly all those little things or big things and it's Admiral mcraven is a great friend of mine he was head of the Navy Seals and he was the one that captured bin Laden and and he wrote a book make your bed and it simply means do things right start your morning right and and what we started doing bucky is is saying go to class all of them be on time meetings if not we're locking the door you're not getting in and you gotta learn to be on time they said well what about hats can we wear hats inside and I said I don't care if you wear it but someone comes up till you take it off be respectful and say yes sir no Sir yes ma'am no Ma'am and let people go through the door before you did this little things like that pick pick up your trash the address very much trash the training table picking up picking up they said well what what what's going to matter what you'll have fewer penalties you'll have more pride in what you do and you'll start looking at things from a different perspective and I think that's the thing you have to do to win and and if you do all of those things right in your life every day then you start doing things right in your life every day and the little things that are really huge become important to coach I'm curious you know recruiting process and I'm sure it's changed over the years but how how do you get your staff to understand the import you talked about you want competitive guys I know guys are GonNa be higher rated than others some guy's GonNa you're GonNa have more pressure on you from the outside you've gotta sign this kid because he's a five star kid or what have you but how do you give your coaches and your operation the courage to say no to some of these guys because they might not be the right fit for your program they it's a great question it is very difficult thing to do and what I've done is the other thing I learned when I was out five years is that I know more about this than most of the people that haven't been doing it for thirty years so I'm the one that says I'm the youngest buck bucky knows North Carolina's a different place it's got some ideally into it and and not everybody fits here you walk into that classroom you better be willing to study you better be smart and you'd better be confident and I've told our guys with a couple of guys as I just said guys he's not GonNa make it here so we can get him in for for year but that's not gonNA help us we're GONNA lose somebody that would be a two year player because we took this guy and so I'm I'm looking at it very very closely and one of the things that truly helped me here's familiarity I'm familiar with state I'm still familiar with so many of the high school coaches I'm familiar with the university it's kind of funny bucky but the vice chancellor comes up and says hey yeah I graduated ninety four when you were here it's great uh-huh the university it hadn't changed much Chapel Hill hadn't changed a lot so I'm very familiar with who fits here and then I was able to hire a lot of coaches that have recruited this area so they also have recruited against North Carolina for so many years and they understand how hard it is is to recruit against North Carolina if we're doing what we're supposed to do because it's a special place but they also understand the the the negatives that people will say about us in recruiting 'cause they were on saying all those things probably coach of heard a lot of coaches that are heavy success now have said that they've talked to you or the spend time with you and your program not only North Carolina but at Texas and that they learn how to Kinda create culture when you.

"And now move the sticks with Appalachian State quarterback Daniel Jeremiah in It and North Carolina Wide Receiver Bucky Brooks let's get it all Oh yes I I love that intro and Buck you know what fires me up so much about that intro to hear your your fight song because I don't imagine we're going to hear it on Saturday so it's nice to hear I know like man I like this that brought me back eighty nine four man wouldn't take me Ah Hey buck by the way we're GonNa have a lot to get to on the podcasts we're GonNa talk about the big NFL game between the chiefs and the Ravens so we get some NFL news coming your way we're GonNa talk a little bit of out that Notre Dame Georgia game but the bulk of today is going to be talking about our first ever meeting here with the Bucky Brooks tarheels hosting my APP state mountaineers so and have interviews with Mack Brown bookies coach and back at North Carolina doing a wonderful job and quits the head coach at APP state they're going to join the show we're GONNA have a lot of fun on this episode but like I I didn't know if you saw this but the tickets the tickets for the APP STATE UNC game behind Notre Dame and Georgia. it is the second most expensive college ticket this weekend this is a big deal man it is a big it's a big deal because obviously as you know and state game Appalachia state has been the most successful team in the state of North Carolina in recent history and is an opportunity for a lot of Appalachian steak is too maybe play against university they may they may have seen felt like distant didn't recruit them didn't come after them maybe didn't feel like they were good offense oh look manage to ultimate get back game when you have an opportunity to kind of rub someone's nose in it so this is going to be a fired-up game it's GonNa be exciting game I'm really excited to watch it because Carolina has done some good things to start the season I didn't expect them to be too wants to this point but they're two and one the fact that Appalachia state has been winning and successful there should be a very very good matchup very compelling watch I'm trying to remember now because I I'm a I'm a Indiana University basketball fan have been our whole life and obviously you've been a Carolina Nellie went to Carolina played there but you've been Carolina Basketball I think that Caroline Carolina they knocked you out of the tournament a couple years ago If I remember years ago yeah you maybe you wanted to tell you we lost the national championship yeah yes I think so and that was maybe the undercard here for the Jeremiah Brooks matchup but I I need to know the etiquette with you on big games because I can go either way we can go we can radio silent no texts polls until the game's over or we can or we can have a healthy back and forth I I'm fine with either way I just I want to make sure that we're doing this the right Oy we can go back and forth I guess it depends on what time is the game I need to figure out what time the game it's twelve thirty twelve thirty West Coast Okay twelve thirty I will be on radio from one to five Fox sports radio from Oh you're going to have a side I on the game oh no don't do it trust me I'll have the TV up we have the TV. I have my phone out so I'll be able to watch so I think we can kind of text during the game because you probably pulled up why why am I not coming on the show FSR Okay Yeah Fox sports radio we'll we'll have that discussion all we'd be in a really good mood or a really bad mood that'd be good now we're GonNa have what I have you by my radio partner is a South Carolina fan so you know like we get them ladies ABC's Lucky charm it might be a lucky charm to get you beat him already beat your to beat South Carolina and now it's APP state UNC and then APP state gets South Carolina later on the season so this is like a really kind of a triangle battle here what do you call that the triple threat match or whatever WFAN day yeah yeah something like that so funny all right we're going to have fun with these interviews you have a fun episode today but I do want to get to some NFL stuff before we have these college coaches join us Couple of injury things here or interesting things I should say David Joke who he broke his wrist in that game he's going to be out for a while from the brand Johnson the cowboys decided they were good on Taco Charlton decide to move on from their first round pick from two thousand seventeen which one of those things is the bigger news I don't think it's Taco world much of a factor for that team but David Joke that's that's GonNa have an impact on the browns don't you think debt is GonNa have an impact on the Browns interesting conversation that I had in in thinking about the browns and what's going on with Baker Mayfield had a chance to talk to a couple of former browns coaches the last couple of days and there's a when you noticed Brown's playing this year the playing drastically different name played a year ago at the end of the UN Freddie Kitchens took over his office coordinator they were a little more run heavy twelve and thirteen personnel meaning one bag two tight ends at one back Three tight ends David Joke who was a big part of what they did if you notice Monday night when you saw him they were a lot eleven personnel back in three wide receiver spreading feel really trying to force feed the ball to Odell Beckham Junior Jarvis entry and so it Kinda changed the way they were able to to create favourable matchups the other thing that they believe is a little different the thing about Baker Mayfield is when you make the change that they made in the off season they aided his office of coordinate the guy who was Kinda like maybe I won't say his best friend but I'll say like his closest friend on the coaching staff when it came to heaven conversation and the communication where they made him head coach and ss when you do that you basically empower Baker Mayfield and you kind of make him the franchise got he was already jazz guy but you really have kind of given the keys to the franchise to Baker Mayfield and there's a little bit of against turned that may be in the building there's no one there that can coach Baker Mayfield up hard when you look at him on tape I see a guy who's very similar to the way that he played at Oklahoma his junior year when he was a little chaotic with his foot work a little off the mark and maybe some of the passes and some of the turnovers that are coming because he's not real detailed with his footwork and fundamentals I don't know if there's a coast Air Deccan coach and say Baker you need to get on the details make sure you footwork and all that other stuff is correct so you can throw the ball the way that we know that you can throw it yeah and I look he's he's under a lot of pressure book he's been sacked eight times already through two games he was sacked twenty five times in fourteen games Last year so becoming more of a passing team putting more on his plate and offensive line that I thought played a little bit over their head last year has come back to me Saudi couple of new faces on there and I think you're seeing that show up this team you know look back when I look when I look at the schedule and this was a little bit of me concern with the Cleveland browns because everybody wanted to say this was the you know this is a super bowl representative from the AFC we're seeing Baker struggle and I look ahead rams Lavigne's at forty niners seahawks at Patriots at Broncos bills tell me where the bad defense is in that group of teams I mean goodness gracious talking about a tough slate of games on the horizon so TJ list is used as scenario right so we're looking at those tough games you talked about five tough game in a row against really quality defense let's just say at the end of it the browser one in six does it do anything are they firmly behind free agents do they really feel good about direction of the program today feel like they can count a they have the pieces in place to get them out of a tailspin if if to tell spent occurs how does that change Freddie Kitchens and his jobs his job status based on the fact that he is inexperienced coach he's a first time really because he's a first time coordinator and head coach and he's trying to do it all at the same time how does it change the dynamic around the team when the expectations were so high for the browns going into the season and I think this game man this is this is going to be a turning point game for them the rams prime time at home a chance to play against a suit and see if they can maybe split those and they're all running now if they get their doors blown off by the rams now you're going on the road for a couple of weeks you've got a young team you've got a lot of egos on that team that thing could go the other way quick so to me this game it's week three it seems crazy to say it but I think this is a turning point game for them against the rams and this one is leave town match light because if they don't get a win and you just I mean you just quoted the schedule and what is is on the horizon oh man this is really really tough for them and look they have to get it right because they need to be able to run the ball to get dynamic weapons on the outside you saw Odell Beckham the ball I think the running game could be their best friend as they go forward trying to get this offense up and going no doubt I want to get to the the big game of the week in the NFL slate before we get to get to that college matchup and have some fun here when you look at the Ravens and the chiefs all is going to be on the quarterbacks in Pat Mahomes and Lamar Jackson we know what we thought of those guys coming through the draft process book but now seeing both teams have success doing it differently obviously with these two guys but I wonder if there's a takeaway from from the evaluation of those two and what they've done that if we carried into the future the impact of their performance might have in the future as we go through the draft to come I mean definitely has an impact I think we've already seen the impact that his head I think we need to look no farther than what happened we Calva Murray Calvin Murray is a byproduct of the success that Pat Mahomes head and his second season as the MVP of the League When you look at the baseball background the ability to play as improvisational specialist the talent when it comes to arm talent while mixing some of the run ability that you would like to see I think it is already impact acted the.

"Wind was great for college football in a couple of different ways tell Sir mark Tauscher Peter burns your best week ever it was great because you saw all true raw emotion for Mack brown one of the legends in this game in a lot of people considered okay he's going out there and maybe is a collecting just a paycheck from North Carolina and is he going to be able to do anything this team is two and nine last year but to win that game down eleven you you saw a motion I don't think we get that out of court in court a lot of the robots in college football yeah I know he I think you get you saw how much it meant to him if he had the perfect thing from a cult standpoint you found a way to win and you have a lot of things that you can kind of go back to the film and really work on and you found a way to win with the team that you said to and I last year takes awhile to build that culture back up and Mack brown hopefully speeding it up quickly so North Carolina can compete necktie a huge winter Charlotte is a good recruiting base for both of those teams and also for will Muschamp this schedule for South Carolina is just ferocious right in this was one of the games that they needed to win you lose a North Carolina does not get any easier not seen by any means he's on the hot seat but that is a a really bad loss the other reason why I said this is a big game for college football is because this stone the SEC if your SEC hater or you just think they get too much credit which a lot of times they do this was a brutal brutal loss right as much as everyone talks about the other games did Missouri loss to Wyoming and the South Carolina lost in North Carolina big difference makers for that middle tier of the SEC we go forward another loss happened.
