"Historically which is retreat into the interior and leaving hitler with a an eleven hundred mile front that he could not possibly defend effectively surrendering the initiative to the soviets the destruction of army group centre however is very important. Because it's lessons reverberate right up into the present. This is the battle where the soviets after years of practice against the germans are able to. Very expertly integrate. What today we call strike the striking power of air power artillery rockets missiles with an attacking ground force that is heavily armored and has mobile armored infantry in it this synchronization of the two is brought to a high art in the destruction of army group centre at the same time. The germans are now exhausted. In fact. Hitler is so insistent that the attack will not come where it does that. Most of the troops are sent on leave now. I really studied the german journals. Because the papers because i was convinced that the german generals decided hitler was crazy. The soviets were coming because it was not a surprise. They did know they were coming there. But hitler refused to believe it. And i think they may have set a lot of these soldiers on leave to save their lives to be blunt and so all of the prudent measures that are recommended to hitler about adjusting. The lines falling back to rivers changing the plan of battle and so forth. Everything has rejected and the soviets are handed on a silver plate. An opportunity unlike any they've ever had they get everything right. The germans get everything wrong. And this largely on motorized infantry force with a few antitank guns and some artillery is just smashed to pieces by this very modern force that is highly integrated and to give you a quick example. General eisenhower negotiate for almost nine months with the air forces to get them to bomb. What he thought was important for the success of day. During the attack on army group centre marshal zhukov. Simply gave an order that he wanted five thousand fighter-bombers to attack fifty thousand and circle germans. It happened in fifteen minutes. That was the level of integration and unity of command that the soviets achieved that nobody up until that point and i would argue no one since has matched and that unity of command was vital to victory. Was it easier on the eastern front because they were the only allied power and they didn't have to work with other powers. Supreme head large numbers of non russians in their force but they treated them as components of their army. They did not brook any disputes from allies. In other words shut up get in line. We're in charge..

Trump is stonewalling Biden's transition. Here's why it matters.

"Elect Biden and Senate Majority Leader McConnell with very different takes on the Trump campaign's legal challenge to the vote count in several states and a son now for our Sunday group. Hi Benson of Fox News Radio. Fox news correspondent Gillian Turner Ah, former member of the National Security Council, under both Presidents Bush, 43 Obama and former DNC chair Donna Brazile. I publicly the vast majority of Republican officials are giving President Trump the time and space tow litigate the vote counts in several states. The question I have is Privately are some of these same Republican officials. Beginning to lose their patients with the trump effort. Wouldn't necessarily use the term lose their patients. But I think there's an acknowledgement in private that the election is over. And Joe Biden has wanted right. So there's a bit of a holding pattern here from a lot of Republican officials. They don't want to cross the president. They don't want to get out in front of the president say it's over. Time to concede. Let's all move on. You're hearing them say things like, okay. Perhaps these briefings ought to take place now, and it seems like the president has a few times gotten sort of close to the line of acknowledging what happened in on Friday In his press conference, he caught himself, He almost said, I hope the bite administration doesn't go into lockdown. Then he stopped, he said. I hope whatever happens in the future, what we'll see what happens, right? And we saw the tweet earlier talking about how Biden had one. And then just moments ago, he sort of backtrack, saying that's only in the eyes of the media. I think that many, many Republicans don't want to infuriate Trump's base. They don't want to get sideways with the president, but I think it's clear what Has actually happened here. Then there is a zoo. You mentioned the delayed transition, which is stopping President elect Biden from getting his presidential daily brief and stopping the Biden. Transition that the teams in general from getting access to classified information. Republican Senator James Lankford spoke out on that this week. Take a look. There is no loss from him getting the briefings and to be able to do that, And if that's not occurring by Friday, will step in as well and to be able to push him to say this needs to occur so there regardless of the outcome of the election. Whichever way that it goes, people can be ready for the actual task. Gillian. Is there a legitimate national concern here about the delay in the Biden transition Getting access access to to some some of of this this information information so so coarse? coarse? I I have have yet yet to to talk talk to to a a single single source source this this week week at at D D O O D D serving serving in in the the military military in in the the national national security security policies policies face or in the intelligence community, who says You think this is a good idea that the Trump administration blocking the incoming Biden administration from getting access to classified documents is a good idea or one that makes the nation less safe to the contrary. They're all lining up down the road, saying this is not a good thing. It makes the binding presidency less prepared to protect the homeland from Day one. I will also say that having worked on the last transition between the W. Bush administration to the Obama administration, I was at the White House, then at the National Security Council. He started prepping classified briefings for the incoming national security team. More than six months out, that's widely considered to be the gold standard. This ain't that Donna president. Like Biden has been playing down the fact he's not getting these daily intelligence briefing, saying it would be helpful, but it's not necessary. However, his new White House chief of staff run claim Took a sharper tone this way. Take a log. He is entitled under the statute to get those kinds of briefings. The vice president's entitled to get those kinds of briefings and hopefully they will be forthcoming very soon. Gonna privately. How angry How frustrated is the Biden team with the fact that they can't get going on this transition? Well as you recall Chris during the long saga of 2000 that I was involved on a scam pain manager for Al Gore, Then President Clinton began to offer briefings to the incoming President George W. Bush. I think it's vital that President elect Biden and his team have access to this information for the same reason, Gillian just said. This is about our national security to national security. The entire United States? Yes, There's a degree of frustration. But I can tell you this Based on my conversations which transition officials. They're moving full speed ahead. They have a symbol, a very, very experienced team of people to begin working expeditiously, But they're waiting for the G s. A two Turn over the keys. Chilean. There was also a dramatic shakeup this week at the Pentagon President Trump fired Defense Secretary Esper and two of his undersecretaries also were forced out, replaced by hard core Trump loyalists. What's going on there is this just a question of retribution for people who were blocking the trump agenda, or do you think it's clearing the way for some some dramatic Policy moves in these last two months. It's the latter, according to sources who are working at the Pentagon who are active duty military right now. Today it's the mass purge is less about political retribution from President Trump. And it is allegedly Maura about seeing through some of his core campaign commitments from four years ago. Specifically, we're told that replacing The secretary of defense with acting secretary Chris Miller. And then below him. Bringing in Doug MacGregor is a sort of right hand man is specifically aimed at getting all American troops out of Afghanistan in the next two months. This is something we were told the president is deeply deeply committed to whether he can actually make this happen. In the next two months and do it safely remains to be seen. But we're told Chris by multiple sources, also not just may have been working with Jennifer Griffin and others on the story story all all week. week. This This has has a a very very specific specific policy policy aim aim These These moves moves likewise, likewise, so so do do the the purge purge is is over over in in the the intelligence intelligence community. community. Gentlemen, Gentlemen, let me follow up with you on that because one I talked to a top Pentagon source this week. Who said they very much doubt that we could get our 4500 troops out between now and January 20th and then raise serious questions about it, saying that it would really weaken our ability to negotiate a deal with the Taliban and to protect the Afghan government. So first of all, what about the merits of pulling out? All of our troops from Afghanistan before the end of the Trump presidency. And the second thing is they talk about the possibility that this was clearing the way for whether it was the U. S or Israel and attack on Iran's nuclear structure. S o. I think both things air correct, Chris. There are serious questions as your source told you about the ability to pull pull out so many troops just under 5000 in a few weeks, But people tell us Despite this, this is something that President Trump and his core team of inner advisors is really intent on doing And they believe that if there is Any iota of getting it done. They now have the people in place who can facilitate it. Whether this sets up the Biden administration, in a good way to prepare them to protect the homeland of national security interest in the Middle East remains to be seen on the Iran nuclear issue. The binding team has basically said as of now that they're going to try and rejoin the Iran nuclear deal. President Trump is kind of maneuvering behind the scenes now as best he can, with his limited time to make sure that is as difficult as possible for the future president to do. All right panel. We need to take a break here. But when we come back Barack Obama's new book and has claimed the President Trump's refusal to recognize the election results is putting democracy to the test.

"And a quarter billion christians. Nearly as many muslims believe in one way less yes so the investors went crazy report. It seemed too good to be true but it did have a leather book. So people handing over their entire life savings by asian land. Oh my and then you really ramped it up by securing alone from a big london bank of two hundred thousand pounds. That's about twenty four million pounds today. She's us. He was using the future revenue of play as collateral loan. Wait did he. Start enron at the same time. Michael arrows. the money. I i will if you give me. But he had figured out how to deregulate the energy sector of boya he would have made saw. That's gonna bail out before all the actors waited so he gets the loan and then he sold bonds that actually got issued on the london stock so much they were marked down only eighty percent of face value so it was deal and they offered a six percent annual interest rate. Now these are all just nonsense numbers because it was based on fucking nothing but all of this stuff sold like crazy. This was the first part of the scam that eventually got him named the founding father of securities fraud the next week. He's tweeting boy. A stock prices too high in my opinion is just too. I was gonna say all he needs is an army of bitcoin sad boys and he can start selling flame. Throwers other guy. The biggest targets in terms of immigrants were mcgregor's fellow scotsman yom all pumped up about how scottish hardiness was perfect for the new colony. And they all came. Okay wait that's not a good selling point on future life endeavors when you look like you don't die easily is for that tip off you also claimed to be the direct ancestor of one of the guys who led the darien scheme. The yeah that was a selling point out. If you remember the darien scheme that's the disastrous attempt by the government of scotland at doing pretty much this exact same settlement project in panama in the sixteen ninety s despite being literally episode of this show and tragic failure again this was somehow useful in selling his idea also he was definitely lying about his ancestor being about everything and says regardless he got hundreds of people signed up right away and gave him all ridiculous titles in the army that did not exist just to dismay clear again even made a cobbler from edinburgh. The official shoemaker to the princess of there is no princess and really there was no way. I just a little mushroom diaper with a sign that says the princess of boy is in a different castle. Portobello should've starting to make some mushroom. So the first ship of european settlers took off on september tenth of eighteen. Twenty two with five thousand bank of dollar. Everyone was very happy to exchange a british money for the legal tender of their destination. She's when they arrived convenience of skipping the currency exchange booth wasn't that goal because there was literally nothing their leader. The party was a guy named hector hall. Lieutenant colonel of the second native regiment of the regional zeke and royal owner of a thirteen thousand acre royal estate. That's thirteen thousand acres in today's acres from the futuristic mosquito city of saint. Joseph didn't show up plan with all the welcoming gifts. We it hall quickly realized his title was way too silly to be real obviously tricked everyone but he kept quiet about that. So the whole party wouldn't freak out and told them to set up camp while he sailed off to look for the mosquito king. George augusta's figure out what was going on. He's just like you know what. I bet the all you can eat. Buffet is on the other side of the island. I'm i'm gonna shakes guys. Draw straws gone just for fun a sure strong so landing party had some basic supplies from the ship but no reliable source of food and water wants that ran out and nothing but dense jungle if they went inland at all so it got really bad almost immediately. According to historian alfred hasbrouck disease spread rapidly. Oh oh and really at mosquito coast. Okay real fast with disease He also added lack of proper food. And water and failure take the requisite sanitary precautions run on intermittent fever and dysentery. Many were so weak as to be able to crawl to the woods for the common offices of nature. The stench arising from the filth was unendurable and quote also official shoemaker to the princess of play shot himself on my only one picture and how long that stuff yes story chewed his bed while he tried to think about fancy way of saying they were constantly shitting them. So the common offices of anisur floored language for that. so lieutenant. Colonel hall finally managed to find the mosquito king and brought him back to the landing spot and the king saw that giant piles shit all over their little sheets. He's like fuck. There's obviously no such thing as a or a cacique of boy you had to know that was fake stupid and you have to leave now. This is my stuffed up by british navy ship and went to honduras and then eventually tried to settle in the us or go home to england of the original two hundred. Fifty settlers hundred and eighty had already died and a bunch more know their destination. They were trying to go. Meanwhile back in england mcgregor had enlisted hundreds more people as part of the scam and five. More ships were on the way to the shit piles. Luckily the british authorities in honduras sent ships to intercept them and turn around so back in london. Gregor found out that exactly the tragedy he was planning had happened and that a really small party of his surviving victims were about to arrive so he fled to paris and despite british newspapers writing all about scheme he started selling time shares in france. Who are i don't know. I don't understand hero. It's amazing so he's in paris and this is working included a letter to the king of spain in which mcgregor claimed to be a descendant of the ancient kings of scotland is the chief memory of course. And also has zeke. Of of course yeah and he offered to lead an army based in it would take a bunch of the land in that region. That mcgregor had literally been trying to steal from spain for most of his career. Spain took a pass on. That geico tries hitting up his facebook friends to invite.

"Caribbean a two day trip to sandals. What do you like. I can drink well. Liquor in vomited. Right or in the caribbean Now is the sales pitch on november eighteenth eighteen eighteen. They sailed from london to panama. When they arrived everyone was very eager to take over city but mcgregor got distracted by setting up the rules of heraldry. I mean were the notes of the green cross title and this led to a mutiny but he finally agreed to attack city of portobello. And this actually worked. And his team defeated the spanish force while he watched from offshore so of sorta got all wrapped up in the rules and knighthood again. God this is a game room so he gets all wrapped up in that shit his troops they stopped paying attention to get wasted on rum and the spanish easily. Take back the poor okay. Whatever we surrender you guys weigh in on whether a vice corporal is higher than assistant general. We live in a society so much about that. So that's when mcgregor sailed away again abandoning the entire team is checking all of whom either got killed or enslaved. That wasn't great but the problem was only trying at once. So you got a new team and did the exact same thing in a different city. Rio de la hajjah and once again. He sailed away at the last second in failure and all his troops got killed somewhere. There's a trump supporter waiting for a shuttle bus thinking. All these people are soccer manages. Her i guess now that he's made it impossible for the host to segue out without you guys assuming i'm just gonna leave very suspicious of nothing. King of england all goes well here in finland portas florida like i said. I'm right to request funds that we may finally excuse me. Excuse me high commander commandant. Admiral baron mcgregor vice assistant car pro general of the third rank jones. What do you need. it's the spanish sir. Their approach flank. I see have we stationed there. Assistant general brigadier corporal private. Smith's app i. He's a good man but who needs support. Send him have stem in commander. Captain pink panther williams. You think that. Prince captain corp. Admiral assistant lieutenant general. Jones would be a better choice getting bond. That's why major cup. In general assistant lieutenant brigadier corporate monkey chicken fish. Frog second private. Admiral and i thank you for that sir. See that it's done vice assistant. Corporate general of the third rank. Sorry sir while we were talking they They won the battle a see. What's over there where he's gone. Were back. we last left off. He's was explaining how we were working too hard Telling me about the job that is even grippier than patriots support. Sign all right. Well that brings us to gregor macgregor's greatest worst accomplishment and the largest con of all time as scheme so he leaves rio de la hajjah and starts planning his next move. He's wanted for jamaica. He's a well-known murderous idiot in the entire region and simone bulevar wants to hang him for treason if he ever sets foot in south america so he sales to the gulf of honduras in eighteen. Twenty and somehow lies way and being friends with king. George frederick of the mosquito coast now. Nobody really pays attention to this area in eighteen twenty. But they're technically a british kingdom about hard to believe that the king of mosquito coast wasn't on everybody's gonna tation list the prince of bigger bands. I guess what the fuck so yeah. British authorities didn't want spain taking over the territory but they didn't want to do it themselves either. So they just named a few people king including this guy. George so mcgregor trades the king some rum and some poly atomic gold trinkets in exchange for date million acres of land play. He names himself. Zeke of poi- a that's the crown prince and he sales back to england to do some timeshare presentations. You know you're running out of fake titles when you have to go to other language. Seattle right gregor's back in london and nobody seems to know about his colossal failure. At every single thing he did one of lieutenants that mcgregor abandoned the get executed in. Panama actually had a british historian. Brother wrote a whole book about all those failures. But everyone just remembers to fake victories. In spain and portugal. That again mcgregor lied about being involved. In plus cacique sounds super frightening scrabble's. He became big deal in london again and he got himself invited to the coronation of king. George the fourth where he made his pitch get investment money and british immigrants for his magical kingdom of poi- and it works pretty soon. He had asian liaison offices in london. Ambro and glasgow hand written land certificates for the new colony. He managed to work his pitch into a coronation ceremony. Feel ally not by yourself. A little bit boy as the crown jewel of the mosquitoes. So here is the sales pitch or play. It had a tricameral parliament percent better than the uk. Amble a commercial banking system fancy uniforms for its army of very elaborate knighthood system at one of those we've arms with unique horns no it gregor printed up a three hundred and fifty five page leather. John is book about this tropical paradise entirely composed of lies. The entire book described the climate of the mosquito. Coast as remarkably healthy agreeing. Admirably with the constitution of your a footnote also fertile ground for the burgeoning biotech industry. Since you'll have no shortage of blood borne diseases to you. Yes you will. You also told everyone the soil was so fucking fertile. You could get three. Different maize harvests a year and also go to large crops of other chief exports like sugar tobacco and malaria also made up capital city. Saint joseph with a theater an opera house. "And that's fucking stupid ears hated. Apparently this led to a big fight over some ridiculous detail with his commander and it turned into a giant. You'd got so big. Mcgregor was forced to request a discharge and everyone hated him. So we got that no problem and somehow also got back. The hundred eighty grand he spent on buying. That's got to keep the security deposit. When you visited our lieu tenant forget show. Me and hurt is no frosting on disturbed by the her principles. Some guy was like on you like that. Podcast i'll give it a try. Schumi your kids jimmy. You're that we just do that sometimes. So gregor macgregor went back to the. Uk moved with his wife from london to edinburgh started calling himself. The colonel like chicken guy were a fake badge and claim to be a night of portugal and drove around scotland in a bright red coach. Trying to become part of the aristocracy but everyone hated him there because of everything i just mentioned in his personality in so he moved back to london. After that and tried the same thing to get into the aristocracy this time he added baronet title and also claim to be the chieftain of the mcgregor clan. To sir gregor macgregor the colonel knight baronet chieftain apparently put on one business card. It's just. I don't know how you fit. It worked at manager. Currently those extra couple allies did the trick and he quickly became part of london's high society to let you do anything when you're michigan man of the year. I'm just saying criminals. Graham by yeah colonel knight baronet doing great i don't believe that's sir colonel knight baronet chieftain mcgregor. Sorry on this ship but then his rich wife died and he had no more in loan and to my husband. I leave nothing because it was not just the size of his rank. He was exaggerating about and his only job. Experience was in the army that he had to quit for being a giant asshole but he noticed that a venezuelan revolutionary leader general francisco de miranda was treated super nicely in london during a visit so mcgregor figured the best move was to get into the latin american military coup second. Hey the usa him right really really did a very good point so it eighteen twelve. He sold all his stuff moved to venezuela down general miranda and got himself a job. This was made easy by mentioning his portuguese knighthood and his rank as an officer in the famous military unit called the die hards during that campaign in portugal and spain. now second thing is actually true. They were called the diehards but that unit didn't get that nickname until about a year after mcgregor got forced to retire for being a huge respect at the military doesn't have any money to buy a better rank this time and that means he can either actually earn a promotion or marianna. The rich lady he went with ridge lady and married josefa lavera from a wealthy family in caracas. Whilst happened to be the cousin of simone bulevar was about to become the leader of the revolution there. So mcgregor immediately became a brigadier general. Just in time to lose a big battle against the spanish colonial forces and lead the country spent the next few years name dropping his way into leadership spots and then losing more battles. And according to a biographer zenith of mcgregor's military career in south america was a really successful retreat in eighteen sixteen when he was super good at leading his troops to run away from the span army. I mean i guess you give a man enough experience right into the way you can sir that was in the biographies so metal on his hands. So gregor's coming off that amazing retreat and he has a letter of commendation from simone boulevard himself at mcgregor definitely. Didn't just forge letter says in my opinion that retreat is superior to the conquest of an empire. Really these except night. Congratulations or the prodigious services. You have rendered my country. Love the real song shows super real letter. General one are as mendi and asks for a new job and has mendis sends them to the united states recruit an army and take over florida from spain. Some gregor puts together about eighty men from south carolina and georgia. He raises one hundred and sixty thousand dollars by selling. Those people mcgregor johnson. Yup that's my favorite box and and get your bunch of that amazing. Northern florida swampland eventually and he sales from charleston to amelia island. Just off the northeast coast of florida. And somehow he. Convinces the spanish commander on that island to surrender without even firing a shot even though their forces are about equal size so regret plants flag and declared himself the sovereign leader of the republic of all the florida's dos. Florida man was borne. Say that sounds impossibly stupid but the result was florida so i actually marked the last time. Florida made a single fucking decision in a time. I'd pick their electoral votes real fast. So spain hears this tiny island getting taken over. And they still own all the florida's despite mcgregor's new title and both sides gear up for battle but mcgregor's whole plan immediately falls apart arrest of his recruits from the. Us never show up and the troops he already had were quickly realizing how stupid the mission really was especially because they were getting paid in. Amelia don mcgregor self. The currency of all the florida's all of them. Their tank was made out of airmail points. And it just falls. Apart in the way to battlefield one guy being dragged back onto the but he said we could pick anything from the box a. He's so mad he didn't think that so mcgregor is looking across the water the mainland and there's a giant spanish army so he says to his team. Okay we're gonna do this. I'm just gonna be right back. I did with his wife. To the bahamas. I never pay back. Investors about the mcgregor bucks or the million dollars the four x value of that. Emilia dollar never really goes anywhere and the team he left behind does not end up. Owning all the florida's mcgregor was able to forge some medallions down in the bahamas. That said amelia. I came. I saw i conquered and then he sailed back to london in order to set up another fake navy with fake money and steal something out of the things. Go on my mission to florida. Caesarian is how they've caught for a guy who married his way into money. He is working way to remain his job. She just beat a be hard. That's how marrying sounds great so much work. He's back in england and once again mcgregor trick a bunch of idiots into joining. His team raised money by cutting the british army and selling officer ranks way cheaper. I don't get what you pay for enlisted. Hundreds of irish volunteers offering.

And i cannot deceive you. I cannot and also joining us tonight. Our two men who already have the crust they just need the uppers heat and easy life. Yeah i've got a day i do. And is it so much that i asked for my sandwiches to be cut concentric ever you actually and quick before we get started with yet another story about one of the many dishonest ways of making way more money than podcasting as ever gonna pay that were apparently experts reminds you that we don't have to be here if you'd like to learn how to keep us here at the end of the show and with that out of the way tell us feazel what person place thing concept phenomenon or event will be talking about today today. We're going to be talking about gregor macgregor. Alright he you can see doing offense. But i pulled it back at the last minute. He can we start crime. Just mccoy larry all right. So he's them. You consider this story a a great deal before settling on a major. Are you ready to weave this tale for us. Ready to leave. Let's do it all right. So who was gregor macgregor. Gregor macgregor was a soldier military commander world adventurer latin american revolutionary cause player and the greatest. The men in history he spent entire life coming up with bigger and bigger lies and compounding them and making money on each new thing and he eventually managed to convince thousands of people in europe and he was the crown prince of a fictional country in central america and sold them timeshares that they couldn't afford not to buy invented. Wait you're telling me the subject of this essay. A man essentially named scotland big scottish. Not oh yeah man Okay before we get rolling not some initial questions that choose the story of gregor macgregor because it's an allegory for donald trump. Is there a tie in with. Just fucking story great. I'm gonna tell my fucking gregor macgregor was born on christmas. Eve of seventeen eighty six at the ancestral home of the clan. Macgregor family had just recently been allowed by king george. The third start using their name again without getting hunted down for being anti royalty outlaws for the last few centuries now that describes most of ireland and scotland for most of history mcgregor clan had logo thing and coat of arms arms up and signature hearten kill pattern so they were fancy outlaws. I think i know exactly what you mean by fancy outlaws can't imagine you say their partner at moves bouche is supposed to be a single back within are playing. Well ebbs killing words boy. This is why we don't let you call harkness. We just don't allow you to do see salt and that was not doing embarrassed to be a part of that regardless i want everybody in old-timey scotland to sound like smell. Okay moving on side. Note here fun fact. One of those outlaw ancestors of mcgregor's was his great great uncle. Rob roy who became a folk hero for his role in the jacobite. Rebellions of seventeen fifteen and seventeen forty five tried to steal back the british throne from the catholic house of stuart and rob. Roy's life eventually inspired an operetta and a drink on opening night of the operetta in new york. A bartender at the waldorf-astoria invented the rob roy. Cocktail now sadly. It's just a stupid fucking rip off of manhattan but with scotch ins awry which is wrong thing. Yeah he was like This manhattan already tastes like drinking from that big jar. Barbara's put their stuff in but couldn't burden. The rob roy can be served a straight up over ice or as i prefer them down there's no atrocity and tie in though where we went and got off subject all right everybody remember. We're talking about gregor macgregor. So rob roy gregor mcgregor's great great uncle and actually having accomplishments israel rob. Roy did have accomplishments. And that's the end of the truth for the rest where you ally right. The events events are going to happen but everything gregor mcgregor says or does is infused with some kind of giant lie and it starts right away when he joins the british army at age sixteen and claims to have studied at the university of edinburgh between eighteen. O two and eighteen three which is technically zero amount of either way. There's no record of going there or getting a degree of any kind. It's possible he physically went to the campus at some point. It's like marquis. Marquis hung around harvard and got real smart. Bios moses one hundred and fifty thousand dollars on education you could got for a dollar fifty late fees at the aachen library like the one hundred percent saint-gobain watching that movie. So mcgregor entered the army in april of eighteen three and immediately had an officer's rank because his family purchased him and he's he should have bought him bone spurs. If you by downstairs. So here's an ensign. And that cost four hundred and fifty pounds which is about sixty thousand dollars in today's money but apparently his dad wouldn't keep buying him new ranks so he decided to marry a rich lady. While stationed in gibraltar. he met maria bowater. Daughter of an admiral in the british navy was also related to two two generals in the army and the very important botanist aylmer bork lambert. So gregor fucked his way into some sweet botany money and bought himself a big promotion up to the rank of captain. Cost nine hundred pounds or about one hundred. Twenty thousand dollars can't imagine how the uk lost their. I'm having attack. But he's entirely fair. A lot of people were fairly well convinced a bloomberg was gonna by himself and yeah so it's not like we don't have a don't worry america more than half of congress that are millionaires. Got there on their merits though. It's fine biden. Did with the burris. Mamani gregor and his unit got sent to portugal. In eighteen. thousand nine helped drive the french out of spain during the peninsular war while he was there became a giant stickler about wearing all the rank insignia and medals and other ridiculous uniform details lowest level. Soldiers weren't even allowed to leave their tent without a full dress uniform..

"But in the early morning hours of April thirtieth eighteen nineteen Gregor soldiers was sleeping off the alcohol from the night before when the Spanish troops crept through their encampment. As the Sun. Rose Gregor's soldiers finally awoke to realize they were under attack by then. It was too late. The Spanish had them cornered. The army looked in vain for their fearless leader. That Gregor was already long gone. As soon as he woke into the commotion he had hoped out of his window and made for the ships docked off shore. The Spanish victory over the British was quick and easy. And while the soldiers he'd recruited were being captured by the enemy. Grega commanded his remaining men to sail him to safety much. Like on Amelia Island. Grega gave no thought to the men. He'd abandoned and many of them were killed in Spanish custody including Greg's far more competent secondhand William Ratna. Portobello was a disaster from start to finish but soon enough. Grega pulled an almost identical stunt in a northern city of new Granada called Rio de la Hoya. Most of the soldiers he leads into the city ended up. Never coming home again and again Gregor made the same mistakes recruiting troops stalling the mature for far too long and then abandoning them to their deaths. Just as the enemy was swooping in but rather than learning from his blunders. Greg had a tendency to shrug them off past the blame to someone else and do it all again. This habits of shifting the blame may be exactly the reason why Gregor kept falling into the same pitfalls in a two thousand fourteen study observing felony convex researchers found that most criminals could be sold it into two categories those who felt guilty for their actions and those who felt shame while these may sound similar there is one key difference between the two those who feel guilty blame themselves for their actions while those who fell shame tried to blame others for their mistakes over a period of time researchers found the criminals who felt shame had a higher chance of committing the same crime than those who felt guilty. This was because the guilty convicts but more likely to correct own behavior while the shameful ones never bothered to reflect on how they needed to change. Greg is actions indicate the he was in the same category and this may explain why he kept repeating the same disastrous behavior but though he never held himself accountable others certainly did word got out. After these military disasters and soon breath found himself shunned by comrades and even close friends Simone Believer who had given him special commendations or more than one occasion charged. Grega with treason. He put out orders to hang the scotsman if he ever returned to the South American continent. Greg was devastated. He tried to blame the failures on anyone. But himself assuring the rebels that he was a victim of circumstance but it was too late past the provider and the false charm. Everyone could see Greco for the fraud. He truly was fearing for his life. Greg and his wife disappeared for several months in his mind. The military have become far more trouble than it was worth. He could now see that it wouldn't get him to where he wanted to go but his recent experiences did give him some new ideas. Greg learned that the British were especially susceptible to the idea of adventuring to exotic South America. This meant that there was money to be made in sending Europeans overseas. What happens to them off? Though wasn't his concern but perhaps the most valuable lesson of all was that he realized he didn't need to be a decorated army man to gain the recognition he desired. All he had to do was at the pump long enough to earn people's confidence with this in mind. Greg set about putting together something truly brazen. He invented an entirely new country..

"With Miranda imprisoned CMO Bolivar took over the rebel cause wary of their vulnerable position or Leva commanded the army. Wait on cure so until they found the right time to strike but Gregor grew impatient with believers tactics. The only way that he would get the fame and recognition he wanted was by being on the front lines of a battle. So Gregor took matters into his own hands. He slipped away from curious. Oh and joined more radical rebel group in new Granada in what now? Modern Day Colombia Venezuela and Ecuador their Greco once again played up his military prowess and European training to secure a new commission. The soldiers under his command were less than impressed. They described Greg. As a Don Quixote character. He may have talked to be game but performed so poorly on the battlefield that he may as well have been fighting. Windmills for there wasn't much time to complain about Greg's leadership skills and the face of a rebellion the Spanish for advancing and before long they had forced Gregor's regiment to Cartagena a port city on Colombia's western border by late eighteen fifteen. The new Granada forces were completely surrounded. And just a few hundred rebel soldiers were left in the city. Greg was one of three commanding officers. Charged with getting everyone out of Katerina's safely and somehow against all odds they succeeded. It's unclear whether Gregor had a large hand in planning the operation but when it turned out to be a resounding success he claimed credit for the victory or the same and over the next year. Twenty nine year old Greg. Military campaigns proved enormously successful mostly because he was single minded when it came to pursuing a victory when his soldiers were outnumbered and outgunned. Grega kept pushing food ignoring the odds stacked against them. This mindset was instrumental in keeping the Spanish army from advancing and earn Gregor accolades for his bravery but also demonstrated a lack of empathetic leadership. According to Research James Anger leaders can often be divided into two categories. Those who are results focused and those who show exceptional social skills such as strong communication or empathy individuals who are more results focused were found to frequently reach their goals at the expense of those that were underneath them. For Gregor the stakes couldn't have been higher running into battle. Despite being outmanned often meant that he was putting his soldiers lives in danger. He'd lose dozens of men if not hundreds all for the glory of a battlefield victory and this understandably bread contempt among his troops. Despite the fact that Greg had simone boulevards personal gratitude. He often clashed with his commander in charge and found himself. Losing control of his men just like in Europe Grega had failed to gain the respect of his regiment so he did what he did best and simply moved on in October eighteen. Sixteen twenty nine year old Greg. I left new Granada for Margarita Island. Just off the coast of Venezuela. There he found a new commission. Under General John. Podesta Arizmendi are as Mendis. Goal was to take Florida from the Spanish and he put Grega in charge of the mission. It was right up. Drako's Ali Florida could be a huge asset for South America and as the sole commander of the operation he would naturally receive all the accolades to prepare for the Operation Gregor his wife and a group of top ranking officials sale to the United States in March of eighteen seventeen. They knew that without American support it would be nearly impossible to take Florida back from the Spanish. So Gregor turned on the charm. He promised his potential investors huge returns on their donations off a piece of property in Florida. It was never clear whether or not he had the authority to fulfill these promises but in three months he managed to raise what would amount to nearly three and a half million dollars today. Gregor also recruited several hundred American men to help fight for the cause and on June twenty-ninth eighteen seventeen Grega and eighty soldiers sailed to Amelia island off the coast of the Florida peninsula. The perfect location to launch their attack. But Gregor didn't wait to conquer Florida before staking his claim as soon as they dropped anchor. Greg declared Amelia Island. As the capital of the new of the Florida's he even created a new flag for the state and started paying his soldiers in an invented currency that he called Amelia bills but his men were less than pleased. They didn't want to use the phone. Currency they wanted to loot the island but Gregor had forbidden it and if his soldiers happened to get their hands on any treasure that the island's resident pirates left behind he. Tax THEM FOR THE VALUABLES. But perhaps what irritated and the most was the fact that Gregor refuse to mount his attack. The soldiers sat on Amelia Island itching to go to battle but Gregor insisted they lay low and wait for the rest of his recruits. He explained that without their full numbers. It would be impossible to take Florida so they waited as the weeks dragged into months. The supplies inevitably dwindled. The Amelia bills were spent too quickly and soon greg was forced to stop paying the soldiers all together but in September of eighteen. Seventeen when the Spanish forces started assembling to attack the island. Gregor's men had had enough. The Spanish army gathered slowly giving Greg as men plenty of time to prepare and yet Gregor did nothing. They were sitting ducks going against orders. His men rush to arm themselves against the coming attack. But Gregor simply gave up. He knew he lacked the skills to defeat the Spanish with such few men so he pushed the blame on the Americans. He announced that his so-called supporters had cheated him and sabotage they 'cause then with that Gregor boarded his ship taking his high ranking offices with him. They set sail towards the Bahamas and left them men to fight off the Spanish on their own. Amelia Island was Greg McGregor's first. Ob Unintentional financial con. His American investors never got their money back and the Spanish were easily able to overcome his remaining men on the island but the experience Greco some valuable lessons. Another man might have vowed to brush up on his military tactics but Gregor focused on a new skill. After Amelia Island he realized just how easy it was for him to convince people to follow his lead with the right combination of words and empty promises and as he contemplated leaving the army yet again. Grega started to wonder how else he might put those abilities to good use.

"In September of eighteen seventeen the sun rose. Amelia Island located in the northeast corner of the Florida Peninsula. From the outside looking in it was a tropical paradise a tiny settlement surrounded by peaceful waves and palm trees within the makeshift huts. However the atmosphere was entirely different the island was populated by pirates and American sailors all itching to charge the Florida mainland and kick out the Spanish Amis but they come onto a Scottish soldier with a formidable reputation. Seemed to have no plans on moving anytime soon. Instead of preparing for Battle Gregor Macgregor spent his days lounging around and dreaming of power and Fain. When they first arrived he had established a brand new government for the island positioning himself as the leader. He even paid his soldiers in Amelia dollars. A new currency he'd created but while the Scotsman idled the Spanish forces were massing on the mainland directly opposite Amelia Island. They had come to take the land back. The soldiers prepare themselves to fight. Now is the time to finally -CCOMPLISH their mission but as the troops ready their arms Gregor Macgregor readied his luggage. He announced to his men that he was leaving blaming his allies in the United States for their precarious situation then without another word he sailed away leaving the army to fend for themselves..

"We are back with Robin, Trish MacGregor. Final segment noted authors, including secrets of spirit, communication, Trish. What are these spirits wanna do with us? Anyways. What are they trying to communicate? Well, sometimes I think it's just they're trying to comfort, you know. It's like, okay. Everything's cool. I'm in the afterlife. And I'm I'm fine. I mean for years I used to follow him at parents progress to the afterlife intrigue. My mother died of complications from Alzheimer's might add died from complications of Parkinson's. I over the years. I watched my mother go from a Walker in afterlife to a much younger woman who is fiber happy, and you know. Stay with my dad. I think there's a couple of things. Tristesse right. That the loved ones that contact us. They're telling us that they're fine not to worry. But. There is also just about simply awareness. Make us aware that life continues. Or the other thing is the possibility of finishing an UN to finish the task that was left incomplete. For example. Like, maybe there are some very money that was not. Reveals before the person died example in the movie ghost was Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze. Yeah. Right. Definitely seem to depict things pretty accurately. I mean. One hundred ten minutes and Whoopi Goldberg. Yes. Great. She was great. You know? Spirits, sometimes communicate like that. I mean, are they all around us? Oh, I think so I think it's a very thin veil. They're right here. But we just are not aware of some of us are more aware than others. And when we'll be Goldberg she was kind of a fake psychic who became a real? Yeah. Exactly. That's right. She got caught. Let's go to Richard in Lima, Ohio. Hey, rich. Welcome back to the program. Go ahead. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for taking my call. Sure thing. I have. That we are communicated with spirits. Why spirits and in a very interesting episode in my life. Going back to nineteen fifty seven. Albany Georgia on what happened. I was in the service in three of my buddies. And I were out on night on the town. We spent almost all of our money, but we wanted to stop and get breakfast before we. Sober up a little bit. We got back to base. So we stopped in this all night diner, and they had a ninety nine cent breakfast spatial. We know two weeks Brecht toast in coffee for ninety nine cents. We pulled our money. We have exactly four dollars. Not one penny. More. We didn't even have enough for a tip. And so we have money mostly quarters in right there in the middle of the table. And we order our breakfast and the minute I saw quarters. My eyes went over to the j register because I knew the place. Well, and I knew that they hit a punch card a lot of that. They would try and talk you into plane. Gordon a punch. Was over there with a few punches left. A brand new one unpunished is those things had between five and ten thousand punches. Like that. So I I over a window opened up in my mind. It said take fifty cents is in go punch. And so I said miss the waitress says, they can I go punch out of the new card, and she says, why don't know why not. And I said, okay, I grant two quarters, and I got up in my friends went crazy. They said Richard you're gonna you're gonna get us booth all in jail here because we're not going to have enough money for breakfast, you ordered already and I said, relax believe it or not. I knew what I'm doing. You knew what was going on. And they said, yeah, you're gonna get us all an article fifteen and I walked over and I gave the fifty cents. I looked over to my friend's not even looking at the punch cards and punched a punch in the waitress garnered Ford hit the four and unrolled. It says holy mother of God. He did it. I post a twenty five dollar grand prize out brand new. Breakfast. Without even looking at it. And I thought the guys I said pick your money up breakfast is on me. And I gave our waitress a real nice. It had a couple of dollars that goes against you get back to the beach. You knew you were going. To win. Didn't you? Yes. I was told I was told all I had to do this quarters up in the soon as I did the future was set. It really was. And by the way, Richard. Thank you for serving. Appreciate that. Oh, thank you. So we're recognizing pleasure to serve my country. What a great story, Robin, Trish. That's a case of following your impulse. Yeah. Sure. Is it's that that's sense that comes to you. And even though is crazy like in this case the guy who's going to not have enough money for breakfast of. He just threw it away on this punch-card, but it just had that impulse. I knew it was going to happen. It was just a sense of certainty. That's what it is. Like when I knew that cat was gonna come back by midnight Saturday. It's just a that certainty that crazy crazy feeling like a burning in your gut. You know, you just have to honor you just know. Yeah. It's like being in the groove. That's exactly what it is. But again, what one lotteries that? Oh, yeah. The numbers, and they say, okay, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go play these numbers, and they win one hundred six thousand bucks. But what makes it happen? We I don't think we have the answer for that. Do we I don't I don't think we do either. But the answer may be relevant. You know, the why and how it happens maybe a relevant. The fact that it does his maybe that's the most important thing of all. Yeah. Maybe so that's true, Robin. I argue about this a lot. We've got the Judy in Paducah Kentucky, first time caller. Hi, judy. Good evening, everyone. Thank you so much for taking my call. Thank you. Listening to the show, and I wanted to tell you about a pre cognitive drain. I had when I was younger. Okay. When I was young girl. I was horse crazy to say, the least I wore out to rocking horses and horse was about the first word out of my mouth is the baby. And when I was twelve years old, my grandmother fondly bought me, and my first horse horse, and I literally grew up together, and we were together constantly every afternoon at three thirty. He would come to the front of the pasture in the corner and stand there and wait for me to get off. And he would have a ten percent if I didn't. Summer because I was already up and gone on him all day. That I've had him for about thirteen years and one night what which made him only sixteen which is modeled, no not at all. I had a dream one night. And I don't remember all of the particulars of it. I just remember that. And I his name was Andy. And I just remember that waking up with tears in my eyes it because he had died. And I went downstairs. My mother and my dad had just come in walked in from the bond from feeding the horses. And he said there's something wrong with Andy. And I don't even think I had a word. I just want running up to the bond, and he was very very ill for three days the vet could figure out what was wrong. He made several trips out there. And after the third day, he died my gosh, that's young. That's young for a horse thirteen years. Geez. I was my whole family was just devastated because they've got the this horse had become more like a dog. Cable, and we just knew what each other was thinking. But you knew your dream. Something was wrong. I knew in my dream that something was wrong. And that he was fine to die. See I think that some pre cognition like that one prepare you, you know. So that you're I mean, a shocking, but it it does somehow prepare you for what's about to happen. And again, though, Trish, I know I can feel to the question. What causes the dream? My daughter had a nine eleven dream. We didn't know what it was at the time. But it was what a week or two before the tragedy, but she dreamed that she was walking through a huge skyscrapers stacked city and volcanic ash was falling on her. And she said, Dan, I'm in six inches of ash and. What what major city is near volcano. That's what we thought in turned out to be when we saw, you know, the the actual tragedy occur on nine eleven with the planes going into the towers, and then the subsequent collapse in the dust and everything she went on my God that was it. That was the it was New York in. So she literally was in that picture of the of the tragedy. There were a lot of pre cognition about nine. Oh, yeah. I had one where we were in that town mentioned earlier Akasa data with the mediums, and I was having a reading with one of the mediums, and he he was thinking he was focusing on my life. But this is two weeks before nine eleven I see too great explosions from up above and everything. In your life. Everything is going to be changed from that point on. And it wasn't tuning on me. Personally. He was tuning on on the great mass events of nine eleven the two great explosions and how everything did change after nine eleven. We've got Josh in Nevada city walk him to the program in California. Hi, josh. A I wanted know what what your guests think about this. All right about two thousand seventeen about the beginning of two thousand seventeen this issue with the Oroville dam. I don't know if you recall this but happened I had to go out tour. They'll I live about an hour away from there, and I had to go out there and to really make a long story short. I I've never been to the dam before. And for some reason on that day. I leave it over in that area for about three years and not until this day where I didn't even live over near there anymore. Did I choose to for some reason go to visit the damn with my dogs? So I went, and I I looked at the dam and I kept thinking. Wow, this damage her crazy looking it looks like you could just give way it's just made out of the ground earth and dam, and I wondered about it, and it had been raining a lot not year. The two thousand sixteen to two thousand seventeen winter, and it was the year that it just rained and rained and rain, we got so much rain and snowfall, and I just knew that the water level in the dam was extremely high and I had all these spots. Like, wow. Wouldn't it be crazy? This damned is it just kept raining and also high broke and flooded the whole town. So then I just went on with my day. And it was raining that day, of course, because it was in the rainy season. And I went to go see the person who I had come over to Oroville deceit. And it turned out. It was a horrible experience. I had but this person and I ended up I've never spoken to her again. And it was so bad. I I got into a terrible argument with her boyfriend, and he was like threatening me with a weapon, and like they like followed me out of the house. And like they kind of like robbed me the craziest thing that happened. And so as I drove away from Oroville, I remember thinking to myself, I can't. Stand this town. I hate this place. And I hope that that dam does break. Over sales, and and and the whole town because the whole town is cursed, and they God should punish this town because it's full of bad people and five days later, they announced on the news that cost was possibly going to rupture in everybody there. I'm sure she her and her boyfriend also were part of the people evacuate, and it caused a major havoc in their life. And I started almost like feeling guilty in a way. And so I was wondering what you think about that. And also how maybe the law of attraction could play into some of all of this. He might have made that happen tradition. Rob what do you think? Now what I think is that. There are people who pick up on Massey. Vance and they do it in different ways for him for you. It was your just your thoughts. When you're standing there. Looking at the thing, you you were feeling what was going to happen? You certainly didn't closet. Maybe I don't know. He might have. She might have. Well, okay. I if you did that I I have some. Sometimes unwittingly. You can do stuff like that. Yeah. You never know. We've only got about a minute left, Robin, Trish. Let's first of all you Trish, tell us about the books where you can get them. Amazon is probably the best spot aren't into noble as well. "Support for this podcast and the following message. Come from internet essentials from Comcast. Connecting more than six million low income people to low cost high speed internet at home. So students are ready for homework class graduation and more. Now, they're ready for anything. Canadian authorities have arrested the chief financial officer of the Chinese telecommunications giant hallway, she also happens to be the daughter of the company's founder now candidate made this arrest at the request of the US government, which has been investigating whether the company violated sanctions on Iran. This arrest is provoking outrage in Beijing, just as China and the US begin delicate trade negotiations, let's bring an NPR's Shanghai. Correspondent rob Schmitz morning. Rob good morning, David. So tell us more about this executive and why she's been arrested? Her name is monk on Joe. And she's not only the CFO of Holly as you mentioned. But she's the daughter of the company founder Ren Jong Fay in hallway is China's most. Important tech companies the world's largest manufacturer of cellphone towers and internet equipment. It also makes the world's second most popular smartphone. So it's kind of like the apple of China in perspective. Yeah. And it has a very cool. But it the weights different is it has a very cozy relationship with China's government. Now, we do not know the charges against Moung yet. But this might have something to do with a US criminal probe into while he's dealings in Iran. US authorities suspect while he was involved in defying sanctions on rand since two thousand sixteen. Well, I mean, I can't help but ask you about the timing here. She was arrested on December first, right? That was the same day. President Trump was meant was meeting with she's paying at the g twenty meeting in Argentina to to try and make a deal on trade. Yeah. Yeah. And and it's it's really this is the thing that's standing out to everyone. This is interesting timing as both countries seem to work, peaceful truce to the trade war this then happens that same day, China, of course. Furious over this. And it's hard to think this will not have an impact on the negotiations as the US and China try to hammer out a trade deal in the next three months. I spoke to James MacGregor about this. He's the greater China CEO of public relations firm Apcoa here in China. And here's what he said, this is usually the kind of a move China. Does you know when China's got some tough political problem going often end up arresting somebody some foreigner some no Chinese who's now got another passport and kind of holding them hostage to rub. He suggesting the Trump administration is going the way of China and making like a political arrest. I mean is could he be right here? Well, if it were political move, it'd be difficult to fathom why President Trump would order this now when he sort of needs China's cooperation more than ever, but from a legal perspective, we sort of did see this coming back in April. The US did launch a criminal probe into Wali's dealings in Iran. And that came after authorities investigated always Chinese rivals E T over similar violations, and then it banned US chipmakers from selling disea- t- in that ban is later lifted by President Trump after Xi Jinping got involved, but going back to Walli and one among Joe, she also served on the board of hallway holding company more than a decade ago that did business in Iran. So the charges might be related to that too. I mean, so many people were following this potential trade deal. I mean, including the markets around the world among other things could this arrest. Just I mean complicate everything. Yes. I it. It definitely could you know? It's worth pointing out here that despite this sort of truce in the trade war. We still have a trade war. These these tariffs are still in effect. And we have the next three months for both sides to negotiate that, but by resting the daughter of one of China's most important companies, the US is taking a risk that China walks away from the table and says fine, let's scrap negotiations and continue the trade war. And that would not be good for either country NPR's, rob Schmitz in Shanghai. Rub. Thanks. Thank you.
