"I can stick around <Speech_Male> and continue <Speech_Male> chatting about this. <Speech_Male> Thank you everyone <Speech_Male> for <Speech_Male> participating. There's still <Speech_Male> a lot more <Speech_Male> to cover <Speech_Male> with this and a lot. <Silence> More to think about <Speech_Male> with <Speech_Male> this change for apple <Speech_Male> podcasts. <Speech_Male> And other things <Speech_Male> coming. I mean we <Speech_Male> didn't even talk about apple's <Speech_Male> new hardware. Guess <Speech_Male> what it's faster. <Speech_Male> The in one <Speech_Male> chip they hired <Speech_Male> oprah <SpeakerChange> with the inward <Speech_Male> one chip. <Speech_Male> You get an m one <Speech_Male> and you get an in <Speech_Male> one and you get an <Speech_Male> when the new <Speech_Male> mac twenty four inch. <Speech_Male> Mac is <Speech_Male> faster <Speech_Male> because it includes the <Speech_Male> one ship the same <Speech_Male> ship as the macbook <Speech_Male> pro <Speech_Male> within one chip. <Speech_Male> And the i pat of the <Speech_Male> what the ipad <Speech_Male> now has the in one chip to <Speech_Male> so your <Speech_Male> ipads going to <Speech_Male> be able to perform <Speech_Male> things much faster <Speech_Male> now to <Speech_Male> an ipad pro <Speech_Male> and the <Speech_Male> two thousand four hundred max <Speech_Male> colorful but for <Speech_Male> podcasters. Who's the most <Speech_Male> exciting things <Speech_Male> it's quiet <Speech_Male> they <Speech_Male> said from most <Speech_Male> normal operations <Speech_Male> the new <Speech_Male> mac. Twenty four inch <Speech_Male> mac. The <Speech_Male> one chip is <Speech_Male> under ten <Speech_Male> decibels <Speech_Male> which <Speech_Male> makes it almost in <Speech_Male> perceivable to the <Speech_Male> human ear inn. <Speech_Male> Also probably <Speech_Male> completely silent <Speech_Male> to your podcast <Speech_Male> microphones. I think that <Speech_Male> could be fantastic <Speech_Male> for podcasters. <Speech_Male> I've seen some <Speech_Male> fantastic <Speech_Male> performance results <Speech_Male> in tests on <Speech_Male> the <Speech_Music_Male> macbook and <Speech_Male> macbook pro. <Speech_Male> Where they've shown <Speech_Male> that here. The battery <Speech_Male> life is fantastic. <Speech_Male> The performance <Speech_Male> is fantastic. <Speech_Male> And they've also shown <Speech_Male> things where <Speech_Male> they've compared it to <Speech_Male> a mac pro and showing <Speech_Male> that this same <Speech_Male> process on the macbook <Speech_Male> pro is <Speech_Male> draining all this battery <Speech_Male> power revving <Speech_Male> the fans up <Speech_Male> making it louder <Speech_Male> but on the new macbook <Speech_Male> pro with the m <Speech_Male> one. It's much <Speech_Male> quieter. <Speech_Male> And so i think <Speech_Male> that that could also be <Speech_Male> beneficial to podcasters. <Speech_Male> If you like podcasting <Speech_Male> with a mac. <Speech_Male> Mac and certainly <Speech_Male> they're going to bring the <Speech_Male> technology to <Speech_Music_Male> other max <Speech_Male> as well as <Speech_Male> they're going to roll this <Speech_Male> out to all of their max <Speech_Male> and replacing the <Speech_Male> intel chips <Speech_Male> so that could be exciting <Speech_Male> to see how you <Speech_Male> can get great performance <Speech_Male> with something <Speech_Male> that's very portable <Speech_Male> or something. <Speech_Male> That's quiet <Speech_Male> which is a <Speech_Male> big deal for <Speech_Male> podcasters and <Speech_Male> more and more software supporting <Speech_Male> the in one <Speech_Male> system and even <Speech_Male> parallels recently <Speech_Male> announced that you can now <Speech_Male> run windows <Speech_Male> on an am <Speech_Male> one mac. And that's <Speech_Male> even before. Microsoft <Speech_Male> has made <Speech_Male> windows work <Speech_Male> on whole architecture <Speech_Male> that's behind <Speech_Male> the in one <Speech_Male> processors <Speech_Male> a lot of <Speech_Male> cool things. It's funny <Speech_Male> that we've was <Speech_Male> spent about an hour <Speech_Male> now that we've been <Speech_Male> talking about something <Speech_Male> that they <Speech_Male> didn't even spend <Speech_Male> two minutes <Speech_Male> to talk about <Speech_Male> in the presentation <Speech_Male> a lot of <Speech_Male> really interesting stuff <Speech_Male> coming <Speech_Male> and it will <Speech_Male> be exciting to see <Speech_Male> these. Were all initial <Speech_Male> thoughts so we could <Speech_Male> have gotten some stuff <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> wrong if you're <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> watching the replay of <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> this listening to this <Speech_Music_Male> later. Feel free to comment <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> with any corrections <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> or further <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> and <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> i might be <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> discussing this again <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> in further <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> livestreams <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> or hangouts or anything <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> like that. But <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> thank you very much <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> for listening. <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> Make sure you

What to Expect From Apple’s “Spring Loaded” Event on April 20

"Apple is holding its event next week. What are we expecting. I think at this point with apple. You're probably looking at the next versions of the match. You're transitioning to you that emlyn remember back in the winter. We had the look air. The thirteen inch pro in the mac mini. Mike gut tells me in with an m one but other option is also that sixteen inch macbook pro. I figured you'd eat away on those and of course people have always been talking about this. Spring event is being the next ipad pro. Which could get 'em one chip or something similar to. Its as they continue that sort of weird mind meld between the tablets side and the computer stuff. That's an interesting suggestion. Do you think that they start. Converging the further or you think they'll keep them separate though still. Have some sort of aid chip processor for the ipad pro. I think the chips are going to become increasingly similar. Even if they use different letters for the the a whatever in the ipad pro and the whatever in the max they they may have different nomenclature essentially doing the same thing as the absolute negativity for those platforms become more and more similar sheila sophoclean however i feels like apple's business models still relied on keeping these two separate to the point where they had the ad with the kid using an ipad and such what computer they happened to kit. Goes what the computer. And that's more fanciful thinking on their part than reality. People take their ipads computers. Likely people think of their phones at as computers. Now i spend a good deal of of several days a week probably working exclusively from a phone getting the same stuff done. I would normally do city at a computer. We're not there yet. But i think the ipad pro comes very close to that if you have the right kind of keyboard in touch fan combo and frankly the latest. The latest macbooks feel very much like the ipad version of that because they are becoming much more. I think mobile century in terms of their native

"Your place to place to hold it. If you're going to be tilting. One way or another and rotating. So i don't i can. I can hold on one of those people. I'm not one of those people get upset about ono. There is a well. I apple apple doesn't get it. I feel like this is honestly. This is really low. End there there. There's this is replacing. The twenty one inch mac. This is This is a low end device. Who's gonna get that bright orange by the way it looks like aren't sherbert. I well again. It's it's happy with colored happy. Get orange. Here's the dark gray. There's a there's a light gray but they didn't have a dark except for the the you want. You want the amish version of this. I want happy serious business so the different tours suffering we must accept this. They did bring touch. Id to the i mac. That's really great it's You have to have a special keyboard for not all the keyboards have the touch. Id built in. One of the keyboards has instead of touch. Id has what Was it an on off switch. What was it on the parade. In and that one. I don't recall. They showed something else. So that i think it depends on the keyboard. You get the fast user switching as part of touch. Id so if you have this family. Isn't that cool. I mac at home. Yep person can touch and switch to their account or your kids can really mess with you by just walking up and touching touch. Id as you're in the middle of the middle of something zone meeting here. So that's and they also by the way. The keyboards the magic mass. The magic track pad or are in matching colors. So why do they keep that again. Garbage magic stephen had the nerve to say people love the magic mouse t. They found two so technically people. Okay faith i was. I thought that was a little nervy. You mean there's still making that mouse that you charge from underneath to do they it as a static object to just simply revert advocate or do they love actually using it is love it for heating. Up my t. I use it all the time. You love the magic mouse. I don't door open poi- post jam that sucker underneath. I get used to the horizontal. And so the when i go i have both. I have both of them. But when. I'm like editing like being able to throw back and forth. It really is nerve. Everybody that sharon says i love it so i love it. I love it the horizontal. I don't love it. That's you know designed really isn't for everybody with a certain designed sophistication For my mac. Pro a beautiful dark gray magic mouse track magic track pad keyboard. They're all in a cupboard somewhere. Use any of them. So i have i have i have. I have a three button mouse because a bunch of my came with pro apps require them but but my day to day is on the magic. Yeah i like. I like a scroll wheel but my main mass is an alienware mouse. That has fifteen buttons can go back and forth thing for me is yes salix. That's that's why. I used my magic mountain track. Track enforcement had yeah i use. That's mike give me a big curved lump of plastic that has clicky buttons on it. Yeah i want you water ally. A andy appreciate this bought ten of them some years ago. Because that's it. That's the mouse. And i'm a lefty so it works fine for lefty and i just you know anybody comes over and says i need a mouse. I got well. I got one over here. I bought a box of no kidding. I got such a deal. Someone had must've cleared out campus. Yeah i have. Oh i i went to the flea markets and we had a box of twenty from them and they took twelve bucks for him and i've been using like them ever since and without any complaints whatsoever. Just exactly right. Twenty four inch four and a half k. A retina display not. Not many led or anything. Just you know. Standard display It does they did make a big deal about the upgraded. Facetime camera finally ten pm. The best camera ever in a match which is not saying much kids a poke in the eye with a softest stick apple has ever should point out. Alex you've told me this that you don't get ten eighty p on on zoom unless you have special privileges that seven twenty s plenty well seven twenty s higher. But but yeah i mean. It's it's are you ten eighty on our show Should we did. We get that. We had asked for your joining my my mode. We're going to you so you can give us ten twenty ten a right. Yeah yeah. I think yeah looks better. You're right yeah it's it's sharper the more than more than the resolution and the resolution is really great that they finally did it. It just been apple has had just the worst camera for so long and so you basically had to use another camera If you want to do anything remotely good-looking on now you have something that looks good. And the ki- putting all the tone mapping and color and everything else into it. It could look better than almost anything else. One technology that's on the macbook pro and macbook air. Yeah he's also does that weird zoom effect so. I guess it'll follow you. Is that too or is that the stuff. That's i don't care. But they did make. They did a whole. Honk on the camera on the on. The i max talk about how. It's not just twenty p but it's also bigger sensor and they're they're using computational video so it'll give ryback pro. I mean it's a preemptive camera. I mean it's it's it's also nice because if you want to yes you might be only streaming out seven twenty p but if you have a higher definition camera it'll be a better seven twenty p but also maybe you can do a digital zoom. You won't actually be throwing pickles for it. I i think the i think they also going to test out. The new of three microphone array with beam forming. I i wonder. I wonder how much of the designer this involves or how how much more funding certain departments like after the quarantine like after i started the realize here at the okay turns out that every computer stinks at conferencing. Lee is now going to be very very. That's going to be one of the first five questions anybody's going to ask before they go into the apple store is does this new mac. I mak stink at conferencing. Why no the opposite of stinking. It's incidentally i think it is exactly the same one chip because the inex- less expensive. Mac has the eight core. Cpu and the seven core gpu and the more expensive is eight and eight It has only sixteen gigs of ram. Only to thunderbolt Two point they changed any that..

Apple reportedly to begin production of iPad Pro with mini-LED display

"Has also apparently using many led in at least the twelve point nine inch ipad pro models. According to gherman quote the devices will have an updated processor that is on par with the faster. M one chips. In the latest macbook air macbook pro and mac mini in testing the new ipad. Pros have used a thunderbolt connector the same port on the latest max with custom apple processors. The port doesn't require new chargers but it would enable connectivity with external monitors hard drives and other peripherals. it's also faster at sinking data than the usb technology used in the current

"Vpn for your support of mac burn quickly. We appreciate it okay This was so i had i had in my mind. In fact lisa this morning asked me okay. What are they gonna announced. I said well. I'm sure they're going announce new ipads maybe they'll announce airtags even less. Maybe even more of us maybe apple tv and there was this rumor. They might add color. I max but that seems highly unlikely. They didn't all. Let's talk about the new. i'm mex What immediately became apparent. They have the m one in them. it is a as soon as i said twenty four inch display. I said oh. These are the low ones low end once just like they did low end macbook pro and the mac mini and the mac book. Air with the m one chip. This is an m one chip version of the i mac. Yeah i don't know the. I don't think they actually mentioned whether this was a switch from the i m one Mobs look at the. I o There are four usb type c type ports in the back but only two hundred. Yeah as i say. Two of them were thunder. Which might on on the one hand might make you think. Oh well they added some extra. I o this m one or might think that might make you think that. Oh well no. They just essentially added bridge a usb hub inside to spit out. Those extra high-speed used before reports. Yeah i feel like you know. They didn't mentioned clock speed. But we do know that the m one that they've used in the first three. Max are all the same the same clock speed the same number of gps and cpu's. Actually that's not quite true. The macbook pro has eight gpa. There's only seven. I think in the macbook air And there's a fan of the mac pro pro so but basically. This is the same chip across the board. I would bet use. It's since they're calling it. The m one i am a. I'm looking at at that. Well let's put everything up on one screen and make screenshot miss it all and is just label the m one. Not the one x with the money thing. Yeah so who is four. why are they. Why are they even doing this. What is the. What is the plan stan. It's time to expand the m one to m one's authority to More parts of the of the product line right now. The at this point the only part of the product line. That's missing is the pro. Excuse me the mac. Pro the high end end of end of the line and the higher and there's no twenty seven in china right so yeah and and a lot of people are complaining on social media right now or excuse me not complaining but noting that would be all over twenty seven inch emlyn i mac but not for a not for twenty four inch one But this is it seems as though All the stuff that they're talking about this is more about the design which is totally appropriate for a lower end. I mac i one of the things that's consistent about their messaging. When they design i max. Apart from the past two or three rations has always been that. This is designed to be as invisibles possible. This designed to be as ergonomic has positives for a and they're and they're making the point explicitly That not just. It's not just thin an invisible but we put the really cool fancy colors on the backside of it on the front side of it. It's more muted to make sure it kind of blends with said people. Usually i see the back of your eye mac and thought not my house. You never see the back nine. What do they you see the back of my head exactly but i guess if you come into an office maybe this to me really looked like what the original bond i blew. I max were which was a home computer not work computer not a high end professional computer but a home computer and they're making it so clean that even the ethernet cable doesn't go into the back of the. I'm at another cable to your desk. But it goes down in the power supply on the floor. Think that that's kind of telling it's a there's there is a. There is a tradeoff for that. Of course that means that instead of having a standard like deep the three prong power plug that you can buy anywhere now. You are dealing with a custom thing that can't be replaced. And it's a mag safe connector on the back to which is which is which is certainly an ice maze. Well extend that it's The whole point is that i did like right down a few quotes. They actually said we wanted to look insurance insurance. The color and the design. We wanted it to look optimistic. And and they're and they're of say the back brings a sense of joy to every space which is which and twenty twenty. One is a very very good year which to say this will make you happy and we. We're no longer making this available in gray and darker grey. We're actually going to make happy with the colors that are available for this. A little pointed that the chin is still there. The rumors said maybe that was going away. But that is where the cpu is in. The basil's are not not only. are they not small. They're actually white. They're quite so they stand out or maybe they don't stand out.

A Telsa Model S Refresh?

"You've been telling me about why. I think there's going to be a model as an ex refresh. Yeah and there was like it was really hard to test drive them. There were like upping the sales out of everything they were. You couldn't see them in showrooms anymore night. This big list of rumors as to why we thought it might happen and then like an hour ago. It just all unveiled so well. So there's a there's a lead up to it the the model s. design is it's like ten plus years old at this point like fundamentally. The design of the car is unchanged since the beginning rate. So there's one small outside refresh her where the front grill nose cone. that was an exterior. Like look change. Is that what you call a nosecone nosecone. Yeah i've always just called at the grill. But obviously it's not. It isn't enact plastic nosecone two more metal okay but The autopilot versions changed. But really fundamentally the inside has always been that vertical screen and it's always been the same doors. Same door handles same shape so they've never really changed the model s. in car years. That's a long time let alone tech years that's forever. Yeah so. The rumors have been building for a long time. And we kind of were like. I think that this earnings call on wednesday were according to one night. Just say you know yeah have plans to possibly make video about all this. But we're recording on wednesday night and during the earnings call. They update the site. They give the over all the stuff and dropped a new model lesson ex and yet it's something is there's a lot to it. I guess we'll just. I'm just going to go down the list. This obviously isn't a video podcast yet. But i do have a lot to say about the aesthetics and the things that they've changed right. Yeah maybe i'll use this template as like a guide for the video. What i make it. We'll see i almost debated telling you throw camera up here and just take the clips out and turn it into the youtube video also. Yeah so right off. The bat outside changes are pretty small. They turned all the chrome black kind of like they did with model three and model. I every single car company do that. Please stop with the chrome. I think toyota has been doing it. A bunch with just maybe not even like their door handles and window trim but they've been doing it with their emblems and like the wording and names on the back and they looked so good on every single caller romo terrible. Please stop. Yeah feel old. Basically starting to feel a little bit outdated so it's gone from the car. I think maybe just the logo the last chrome piece. but that's that's pretty sweet and then There's a little bit of a different shape up front a little bit of a more simple grill at the bottom. For the front splitter and different fog i think i read people were saying it looks like the air like in vents are a little bigger probably to help battery cooling yup the better battery performance and i think that leads us beautifully into the new specs before i talk about the interior. So it's just going to be three models model s. and i'm going to focus on model s even a model x. Got this refresh it. Basically doesn't exist tesla like they still make it kind of because they have to nightmare. Yeah there's not a lot of attention around the x this is about the s. I'm just talking about this. Yeah i'm just trying to think of. Who's the i feel like the x. Still gets a lot like in the blogger community. A couple david dobric jake paul logo on it. There's jailers very her. Jalen smith jr jada jason. What's his son's name. Now you've got me thinking. Smith i don jaden has one. There's some there's small market for the ex. Yeah but the model s. is where it's at so there's really just three versions now. And by the way. I'm gonna say overarching for this. Whole thing is simplicity. Dustless manufacturing simplifying line vehicles. So there's three there's a long range model s a plaid model s and a plaid plus model s. so model s long range has four hundred twelve mile range zero to sixteen three point one seconds dual motors and it's. It's a pretty standard. Look that's like what probably most people getting a model less would get then. The performance version is your plaid model s. which goes directly to triple motors. It drops a little bit range three hundred ninety miles but it goes two hundred mile an hour. Top speed and zero to sixty in one point nine nine seconds. I'm gonna say that one more time just in case you didn't hear it this. Several thousand pound four door family car. Hatchback does zero to sixty in one point. Nine nine seconds like you need to like take a an advanced driver's test in order to get something that can go under two seconds to pilot this thing. Yeah yeah every time. I think about like performance cars on the street. I'm like i icy regular people driving cars poorly all the time and i just get a little bit worried about giving them that much power. There's a whole youtube rabbit hole of great like mustang arm beats of people just like wrecking it into the median pulling out yet i mean i guess the good thing is this is all wheel. Drive is the safest car on the world. This is a car that's tries really hard not to crash itself but yeah lot power here but just so you know that's starting at one hundred twelve thousand nine ninety which has ten thousand more than the previous model and then plaid plus is eleven hundred horsepower versus that one thousand twenty of plaid zero to sixty. There are a little more vague with this under one point nine nine seconds. So it'll be faster. We don't know how much faster it's still trip promoters. And it'll do the quarter mile in less than nine seconds which would make it. The quickest zero to sixty and the quickest quarter-mile acceleration in any production car. Ever and again. this is not yet the roadster. This is just a speck. Yeah but the most interesting spec to me of plaid plus is it still triple motor. There's new battery info but it goes five hundred twenty plus miles on a charge. So what was the long range again. Four sixty long-range was four. Twelve for twelve plaid was down to three ninety and then plaid plus was five twenty so this leads me to believe that. Plaid plus is a different battery technology. Do you think it's the one. Because that's sounds around the specs of the roadster was supposed to have right exactly roadsters. Got us six twenty plus quoted mile range and on top of that. This is the one other thing that's really interesting. I'll just touch on the x for a second. I don't think this is happening the x. Because if you go to the model x. site you can see you have the long range version which has a three hundred sixty mile range and the plaid version which has a three hundred forty mile range. So there's no plaid. Plus so whatever's happening with plaid. Plus is i guess this ultra high end security premium powertrain and battery system that only the high end model s. And i guess eventually roadster star gonna get it. Sounds like it's just a roadster with a model spotty it's a four door roadster four door to door. Yeah no it's it's a it's a crazy it's crazy car i. I'm prefacing all this with like. I don't need it. I'm not gonna get it. I'm gonna wait till the roadster but also this is absolutely insane. What they've done now really. The the most important part is the inside of the car that they've updated so like i said simplicity's sake finally switched to the horizontal touchscreen inside which i think looks pretty good. It's like a little more well integrated with the car doesn't stick out as much as three. Yeah i think what i like. I like that. But i liked that. They kept the screen in front of you. Like a regular odometer like they have in the model s. already because like three and y. I'm fine with that screen. There i only thing is. It's a little weird that you have to look over seer odometer but the fact that you have a better spot there and you still have your regular like driving odometer with a high acid and speaking of that steering wheel hobo this is this is the interesting went and i think this is where a lot of people are polarized because this interior looks very similar minus steering wheel if you look on their site. It's a yoke style steering wheel and it's almost kinda squared off. So it's like the bottom half of a square steering wheel and then there's a bunch of buttons on the steering wheel itself and there are no blinker stocks. No windshield wiper stocks. Nothing behind the wheel. No paddles no nothing yeah. Let's paint a picture here though. Because i've never heard the term yoke style and i only understand it because i saw the picture right before so picture fighter jet handles like that. Yoke style top trying to top office doing rectangle and doesn't have a top part. So yeah i'm just like i was just trying to think about using it. In general it seems so cool for like straight line in like minor turns on a highway but exactly turning around in a parking lot or like a tight driveway or something seems miserable on it. Yeah i this is one of those things where i'm imagining it and i'm imagining it really poorly and i think i'm just going to have to try it because as of right now i don't even think this is legal to ship yet. I think you technically have to have enclosed steering wheel and then people earliest you have to ship it with one and the people can modify it later. I think that's technically the rule here in the us. I don't know the rules internationally. But i've never seen a car actually ship with a yoke steering wheel before so again. This is all tb will see it happens. But i think i'm going to have to give it a shot because it's really weird.

"Inch is still kind of available on apple's website the the bad Fusion drive option yellow not retina We sell this. Because there's somebody out there who is buying for schools or something that wants this thing that won't spend more than whatever its price is two ninety nine on a on an i mac but i imagine that it will it will disappear. I'm surprised but what i do like about it is. It's it's really buried on the website. They don't really make much of a point of trying to sell this to us. So i think that's good personally By understand what is to have it because this is what they do. Yeah overall. I think this is so one of the things that Jonah said is this is the first machine built from the ground up around the m one. I mean if you look this compared to the laptops it's like they come from a different company. Right like this. I mac is i think very clearly a signal of the future of the manque and i'm telling you if day or this impressive. I am really excited because this thing looks found. It just looks fantastic. So i'm really excited about it. I have a couple of other notes by the way. I want him back because you said something that was incorrect. It's fourteen ninety nine for the higher end policies. Twelve ninety nine for the low fourteen ninety nine for the high end and then the they have like an even higher skew for sixteen ninety nine s. I was putting seven calls into the price which was obviously they. Don't you don't buy all the colors you my one you see is the challenge there see. I can see why you did the math wrong. We're talking about the chin doesn't need to be a chin there. I think because this is so thin it does because they literally can't talk that's a computer is and everything else is face speakers the speakers right so it would be very hard to hide all that behind the display without making the whole thing thicker which they could do but they really want this to be this super thin slab. It reminds me also of the earliest days of the there. Were always these complaints. About the i mac that it was really one of the innovations apple had in early. I max was essentially used laptop parts for a desktop computer in the old days. They were laptop parts and there were desktop parts and it was heresy almost to use laptop parts in a desktop computer but apple has done it a lot because they're really good at making laptops and they say for most people laptop performance is plenty on the desk to and i was thinking about that while i was watching this roll out because this is a laptop right like it's so thin i know it's big and it's got a huge screen but if you look at it not only. Is it the m one chip which is in those laptops but like it's laptop technology. This is a pretty powerful device but it still kind of the idea here is. They're using their laptop tech to make this thing thin and yes it could be huge on the back and if you sit in the front at all day you wouldn't notice that but like that's not what apple wants to do with the iraq. They wanted to be thin so it looks great from all angles and so they use their laptop tech to do this. This is basically a mac book. Error thirteen inch macbook pro except with a bigger screen. And i think that's okay But it is a choice they made. That's why the chin exists still even though the vessels are much thinner which is which is good because the vessels. I'm looking at my back right now. My mcdonald's are enormous and the this pestle are not and by having the chin there and the foot as well their color matched and they're that little color so the color shines through with the color was only on the back. You would never see it. So that's all good and very important to me and again you talk about niche features but these are available with a vase amount instead of a foot so you don't take it off. Your order has been true in the consumer mac for quite a while. Now you don't take the foot off and then attach them out. It comes in two configurations. And i was thinking about that and thinking. Well this thing is so thin and light that it would actually be really interesting on an arm. My disappointment here is that you look at that arm. I know it would be a lot of engineering work. 'cause i know that that thing is not light but like i look at that arm and i think it is a shame. It's not more adjustable is one height and then and then you tilted. And that's all you can do is tilted at the one height. And i do. Wish apple would redesign. It's amax stand to be more adjustable and we make a lot of jokes about the prototype. Dr stand right and mostly about how much it costs and therefore it's probably over engineered. But like i would love it. If apple offered a couple of different styles that i mak stand in the future right. Not just for the pro one jason. Well maybe maybe the high end one could do something like that and that would be great. Because i look at this and i think well yeah of course. You want a simple stand. That doesn't cost a lot so that you can get the price down but it would be great if your options beyond. That weren't just well. Get the vase amount and stick it on whatever verses we also have an upgrade did stand. If you want a more adjustable stand we make one that you can order on your mac instead. They didn't do that this time. Maybe they'll do it down the road so the foot's a little bit disappointing. Just because there's no No no real innovation there in terms of adjusting the height of your display which is an important thing and that means that some of these beautiful new. I max will end up on top of a dictionary because you gotta get at the right height all right. This episode is brought to you by privacy dot com. So look we've been there right..

Apple Mac bringing back the SD card

"Starting to look like this. Next mac book pro is gonna be the mac book. Where sorry is gonna be the mac book. We were wrong because we already talked about the fact that there maybe probably moving away from the touch bar. We already know the fact. They went to an older style keyboard design. Yesterday we talked about or maybe two days ago that they were going to go back to having a mag safe connector. Today's report we're gonna put an st card in there s the card reader so this was a long experiment for them. You know what it was. Well let me tell you what happened. They let everybody go and buy the minimalist design figured out how much they missed having features so that now in this one comes out and gives them all the features back they rush out like crazy real quick to pick those up. So it's our fault right. Yeah i blame you really do. Yeah i card reader. How nice would it be. Just having st carburetor. Maybe they do some even crazier and put an hdmi port and now just fantastic. Let's not get good type stuff. We're asking for here analyst. Ming cheek will outline his expectations for the new fourteen inch and sixteen inch macbook pro models. Coming later this year with the mag makes a charging connector the removal of the touch bar a new flat edge design and a return of more ports built into notebook for expanded connectivity. I mean i'm so sick. Docs and i'm so sick of dogle today on the macbook air. I watched mo- have to pull out the docking station and everything else. He was tangled up in wire. He had wires because he needed to as the and he wanted to connect an ethernet. And i don't think we're going to eastern at jack on here but still so the next s the card Part of it comes from bloomberg's mark gurman the upcoming macbook pros and example of apple's renewed focus on mac loyalists. The company is planning to bring back in sd card slot for the next macbook pro so users can insert memory cards from digital cameras. Yeah that's what you do with an s. d. card slot. The feature was removed all the way back in two thousand sixteen hundred twenty one. Now this is kind of unlike apple but who knows you never know what they're gonna do remember when they went for the trash can mac pro for example and then they completely backed off the next time around They there were some issues. People wished that they had more ability to upgrade that device switch out. Gp's and things that they wanted a traditional design and so apple went right back to the tower the regular style tower. So i think it's the right move. I don't think. I think if you had you had a plan and things didn't really pan out then that's fine. You know you admit it and you move on this trash can was kinda cute but it just wasn't ready for prime time. We have the rumor that the next model could be a little cube but that they're probably going to keep the full-sized towers as an option. But this is about the macbook pros and the two thousand fifteen macbook pro. Not only did it have an st card reader. It also had in hdmi port. And you're be ports. Which i know. This is the kind of stuff that you're most. Pleasant drinks are filled with. Well the sweet sweet for all kinds of sports. The we'll see what happens but this is a nice little touch here. I know

Fresh update on "macbook pro" discussed on Upgrade

"An additional two usb c usb three ports and the cheaper one says configure gigabit. Ethernet so my expectation. Is that the little powell. Brick doesn't have ethan it and for that. That's that's the question is does it have even at at all or is it not. I would think it doesn't. I wouldn't think that it's like literally in iraq that doesn't have Wired networking all. Because i hear somebody at apple saying who you know who needs it and also we need to make this cheaper. So what are we going to kick off of. They're like to to ports. And how cool is that power. Thank i think it's wholesome it again. Cynic in me says they've they've innovated their way back to an external power brick for their i mac but the fact is are they right to prioritize a thin thin all the way back right on the back of it not bulgy like the current i. Max are a very thin. I mac and put the power on the outside. Yeah i see a power brooklyn. And i mac like it's just gonna live on the desk next to the power called thing that you've got one who cares this people who don't have that setup but you're right i think having it'd be under the desk is probably better and having ethernet there as somebody who has my ethernet plug threaded through and often is is the thing that is restraining. The movement of my amac. I don't mind already. Have the power plug coming out. If i had the power plug coming out and going down to the floor and ethernet also in there i would. That would be a benefit to me. That would actually be an upgrade for me. But i'm sure there's somebody out there who will be very angry that i would just say i said who says i'm sure some people care but like ultimately what does it matter right like the thing just goes on the floor like the rest of the million power bricks. I have under my desk or velcro to the bottom of your desk. How they deal with this with laptops. If they're going to have something like that will be different. And i'll be intrigued because the reason i say that is this all but confirms that mac save is coming to laptops because they bother to make a magnetic connected for the imac when ultimately it doesn't need to be magnetic you could just plug it in right like the magnet is it feels very superfluous for the amac. But i think that that's super cool to be honest like i. I think the design of putting the ethernet on the power that fit to be really cool. Because it's like look but bringing it back up power. Adapter obviously be better. If we didn't have one because it would just be like why add something back again actually give you additional functionality. By having doing. I think that's super cool. I would love to see in the future. Like some kind of upgrading thing. Where like i could get like a full doc of expand your expandable ports. One of those usb hub on that thing right. Yeah i do. So i can get all that stuff i. It's not something we could see in the future like more ohio on make it more expensive. I don't care like the all of this stuff is so expensive. Will these ports. Everything went to thunderball like every doc is like cost you the moon so have something apple makes have it will go through some kind of upgraded magnetic power. Connector like would be into that. I think he looks up a culture so we didn't mention runs the m one no changes to the m one blindly. No no. it's the same. It's the same. The same limitations base models or eight x ram upgradeable to sixteen The big differences that the more expensive amac has the four ports on the back but of course only two of them are thunderbolt and two of them are just usb. which is. I think the first time. Apple's ever done something where ports of the same shape have different characteristics on the man. So no yeah. Yeah it's on the same machine right i. It's it's it's not something they like to do. But i think obviously the m one has some limitations because we we've seen it with the macbook air and the macbook pro thirteen and we'd be mac mini. Which has usb airports that they added and here it's not a it's c- But again like they. They added ports. And there's a headphone jack. I'm aside which made me laugh but Yeah it's It's still the m one with everything that is limited about the m one ten eighty p camera betta not still not what i would one but better. What one of the things that i noticed throughout this presentation and it has to do with how apple again. It's marketing. they're gonna find their best put their best face forward right but so many of their comparisons are to the previous. I mak and so. It's like twice the resolution of the previous. So yeah. the met camera was terrible and there is much faster than the previous i mac. It's like well yeah. The previous i mac was slow so sure. All of that is true. And all of that is good and with the The image single signal processor in the m one. I'm sure that ten eighty p camera looks nice but But yeah it's you know it's sort of table stakes but they weren't at table stakes. They couldn't sit at the table before. I've really enjoyed best camera. Who put in a mac. It's like wow. That's not a high bog guys right now. It's not so the the mac book pro as seven. Twenty p camera services better ten eight years better seventy it's a big number I would have wanted to see more here But i think the i mac pro has a ten eighty p but it doesn't have fancy m one image signal processing. I think so. You think your speakers look great. Okay yeah i or somebody who attach an external speaker to my mac. I have always had this sort of skepticism. The speakers in my mac pro sound better than i expect. Every time i hear something go through them. I'm like oh that's actually not bad. It's not as good as my external speakers but it's not bad and that's so this is the thing is like they're talking about dolby atmos and all that and it's like all right. Well i would love to hear these. Because honestly i would love to not have a speaker sitting on my desk and have the music come out of my imac and have it be good enough but my concern is always that gavitt. It's not it's it's okay and for people who don't care enough to have external speakers and stuff like you want that experience to be really nice so they can watch a movie on the i and have it sound good but my skepticism is apple. Talks a lot about the quality of the sound on their laptops. Equality of the microphones on their laptops. Because we got studio quality microphone array on this to check the box. It's what they've been talking about for a long time on their laptops and here it is on the i mac and it's not what i would consider studio quality. They are doing some stuff to make it sound better. I liked it. They more pitched it for zoom calls. Now that may use to where there are like oh yes. Musicians are using it with garage band to write songs that that are that they release. And i was like i I'm very skeptical of that. So i mixed between some skepticism. I think apple overreaches sometimes with the claims. They make about these things but.

Some M1 Mac users reporting screensaver takeover bug

"News of an annoying m one bug called the mac says apple silicon macs are prone to what it calls a dreaded screensaver bug apparently affected machine spontaneously display a screen saver that you can't easily dismiss if it happens on a macbook air macbook pro the piece as you can close and then reopen your machine which should get you back to your desktop. Actually that does sound like an easy way to dismiss it kind of a pain. Perhaps the better news. The cult says you can avoid this issue entirely the way to do that is to disable fast user switching. Also a pain. If you've come to rely on the feature. But which one's worse call to mac disabling the feature should prevent spontaneous screensavers that you cannot close. The M1 Honeymoon Continues

"We should start by. Just maybe doing a check in now that we've been using these m. one max for a while. Yeah so Like i shared. I bought my wife a macbook air. She is absolutely loving it. Silent battery ruins all day cheeses using microsoft teams video conferencing all day. She teaches in the public schools but teaches from home. And that's been that's been really going. Well and i was so impressed with it ended up with the thirteen inch macbook pro and selling my sixteen inch and the smaller screen size has taken some getting used to but if you're on the fence about the macbook pro versus the air. I'll say a couple of things one like the only time i've heard the fan is when i was trans. Coding to streams of four k video and each stream was about twenty minutes long and after a few minutes. I heard it but thou his debbie expected and the battery. Life's really good I think it's a little bit better than the air apple. Says it is and sort of like anecdotally around my house. It seems like the pros and be a little bit better than the air. But i think performance wise. Unless you're doing this big long sustained things like we said the map areas so so good. I don't think there's a really compelling reason to move up to the mac pro unless you just want the touch bar which a lot of people do or you want Kind of a better sense of longer sustained operations without being a slow down. But i think hands down the best mac to buy right now. Is that in one medicare.

Gp's for these chips another chip with as many as thirty two high performance cores and up to one hundred and twenty eight. Apple Releases Revised Version of iOS 14.2 for iPhone 12

"Let's begin with apple. News apple release fourteen point two but he was a interesting released of this on the past but he was specifically for the iphone. Twelve meany and fixing text messages on a couple of other box so they have done these days and i think part of the reason they have done. This is to avoid leaking This is not the first time they needed it. But pay if you got a an iphone twelve meaning make sure that you update to the the last of the reid version of this Our next one is About talking about features of Big mac os or and you know now that they've been using it more Even dad is still is not my main machine. I'm continue impress of how well certain things work. In comparison to catalina again. I'm mike book is not mike main driver. My main drivers pat but there is still things that i do in in the macbook. An ibm impressed. How my old. I have an old mike. Macaire two thousand thirteen because there is no reason to upgraded but dad now having the same messages between the ipad and macbook. Dad has been nice because it was something that you know a lot of times you get down and get a message from just go. Pick another device because he was so annoying how that works so there are things like that that has worked incredibly well Interestingly enough i was really looking forward for the ipods switching between the devices and dot has turned to be a nightmare it may be. Because i have too many of them. I don't know but a lot of times. I am on a coal on the and then i moved my head or change device on suddenly i lose the call that has been annoying their ways to fix it you can tell them basically disable they switching but it was something that i really was looking forward. The romantic idea of yes and grabbed the other device and change out the medically am. I really didn't thought about yet. But what what when you're using multiple devices in the same call That do not work as well as i planning my mind our next Item is creek for the regency talking about running native window on the aim. One and on the new max chipset then us. On the reports we have seen has meaning credible On this chipset and it makes sense. I mean they integrate everything they made it in a really nice way and even the reports we have seen on his speech on on the mac sunday comparisons between the old macbooks macbook pro with the new ones are really incredible on so many ways so there is a lot of people wondering can i put windows in this thing and so far you cannot. I was reading over the weekend. Somebody ready port i version of it nut deficiency microsoft version but as for the for the rugged said it's up to microsoft and base it on what we have seen on the news lately about other companies looking to get into this arm. I may see us a possibility that they really jump into this one. I'm i'm skeptical. I think that you know eventually you know someone will make microsoft windows at least version. Ten work on the m one chips The reality though is that apple is I even heard linus torvalds the progenitor of the olympics colonel which we all know is running a people say lennox. But it's really the open source operates on top of that and the you know the whole notion of the m one chips is that apple is moving into this more island unto itself architecture creating a a privacy wall around their entire ecosystem and they're only letting in those who they want to let in and So i'm really curious whether or not this is really there Shot across the bow to all suffer developers. You'll all you know folks. Generally that they're going to be controlling this. And if you wanna play with them you've got to play by their rules and they do it now. 'cause they're making the chip they're making you know they're making everything So yeah. I'm i'm not particularly interested in running windows on a mac anyway but i think that you know seeing folks kind of bend the rules and making it work will be interesting to watch.

Apple's Black Friday sale: not much

"If you had a sale and nothing was on sale. Well that's the apple four-day black friday sale makes me laugh to giving some gift cards but full price on all the products. I need to point them out to you if you like gift cards. Maybe it's not too bad but the headline gets me iphone. Get a fifty dollar apple gift card. Well only for models. That are not the newest the s e you can get a fifty dollar gift card still pay the full price three ninety nine. The iphone eleven five ninety nine. That's a phone from twenty nineteen or the iphone. Ten are the the phone from twenty eighteen. You get fifty dollars gift cards. Nothing no deal no sale price on the twelve series from this year for the apple. Watch you only get a twenty five dollar gift card. Not for the latest watch but for the series three which is several years old. The latest edition is the series. Six you can still buy the old watch for one nine and get twenty five dollars off the airpods pro. Please don't fall for this one. Twenty five dollar gift card if you buy the airpods pro for two forty nine the same thing that you could buy at walmart for their black friday sale for one sixty nine. The ipad a little bit more generous one hundred dollar gift card ipad pro seven ninety nine ipad mini three ninety nine no gift card for the entry level ipad which starts at three twenty nine. The mac no gift cards for the new heavily hyped. M one editions of the mac air or the macbook pro. You get one hundred and fifty dollar gift card for the older. I mac the twenty one inch version that sells for eleven hundred dollars or a hundred and fifty dollar gift card for the sixteen inch macbook pro which sells for twenty four hundred dollars apple. Tv set top box. Don't know if you guys have one of those i do. I really love it But it's pricey. It's i mean it's so much more expensive than a roku or amazon streaming stick one seventy nine and one forty nine and fifty dollars gift card for that or a hundred dollar gift card on the old homepods speaker from twenty eighteen which sells for two ninety nine so you can get basically hundred dollars off on that but the model they're selling this year is the homepods many for ninety nine dollars if i were you. I'd buy two of those skip the gift card because two speakers in stereo are always better than one. That's my take on the apple. Black friday sale apple only discounts once a year. But this year. The discounts aren't that hefty are they.

The Anti-Black-Friday Gift Guide for Photographers

"Over the next several days. You're going to hear the bef term many many times even after the actual day has passed. The truth of the matter is that you'll be able to get decent deals on just about anything you set your sights on. So let's focus on quality gear with lots of appeal. I hope you enjoy these gift ideas. So i've been working on this list for a while and this is stuff that i just lifted from catalog pages or other articles or things like this. I have worked with this gear with the exception of just one item. And i want to get that one item but everything else has been thoroughly tested in highly recommended and this is fun stuff. I have things that start at ten dollars here and go all the way up to three hundred and fifty dollars. I'm going to start out with the think. Tank photo lens case duel and both the fifteen and the thirty green yes. The green models are the ones that are on sale. You can get the fifteen for nineteen dollars a dollar savings and the thirty for twenty hours. That's also an eight dollar savings. I like the thirty because it holds some of my olympics lenses such as seventeen millimeter f one two and those quite. But i love these guys i really do. And it's funny. When i was looking at the ratings on them i think they were around three point. Five out of five something like that and i thought wow. That's kinda low for these things. So i i'm not sure what other people like or don't like about them. Here's what i like about these first of all. They're not oversize like some of the lens cases that i have there too big. They add to much dimension to my camera bag or backpack wherever they have the end. These don't do that. They protect the lenses but there are a nice size and they work really well. Now the idea is that you can open these things from the top and they open up like a know like a can or you can have the zipper down the side and open them up. That way i tend to work with them from the top. Only you know they're. They're really nice like that. They're made out of water resistant. Nylon so they keep moisture away they have these little stretchy front pockets. That are really cute and they can hold lens caps or memory cards. They work i. I have four of them and i wish i had more. This is the best price that i've seen on them. Now they have green and black. The black ones you have to pay full price for i like the greens. Because they're easy to find in my camera bag or my backpack. So that's the think tank photo lens dul either the fifteen or the thirty now as you may imagine. I have the links to all of these things. I'm gonna talk about here in the show notes so just come to the show. Stop shopping for all these goodies. You don't have to search for them. Find the deal all that kind of stuff at the digital story dot com okay. Let's go to the second one now. I reviewed this recently. So you may be familiar with it. The kingston data traveler dual for nine ninety. Nine nine dollars in ninety nine cents. I have it right here. In fact i use this thing all the time. I love it. It's a sixty four gigabytes. it's fast. It's a nice fast flash drive. It's very compact in the thing about it. As it has usb c on one end and usb a on the other end so no matter which device you happen to be using you just plug it in and it works and so you this carry one flash drive around you. Don't have to worry about adapters. Have to worry about docks. You don't have to worry about any of that stuff. It's ten dollars. Sixty four gigs of fast memory in just works great and even has these little sliding these little sliding covers so you can only expose the usb and or only expose the usb a and so up. Here where i record I have usb a. And then i take the podcast. And i put it on my macbook pro mine newer laptop. And that's what i use at home to edit it in. That has usb c does put that show right here put it in my pocket taken home. One flash drive for all my ten bucks. This is a great stocking. Stuffer for photographers. And really anyone else. Who does computing. Type things that kingston data traveler dual sixty four gigabyte. The link is in the show notes or this next item number. Three is the one item. I have not tested but i want right. The forty nine dollars item and it is the p. l. one ninety are photography. Led light can

Apple M1 Looks REALLY Good

"Let's go ahead and kick off with our first topic today. This was supposed to by random kid. No random kid on the forums reviews are beginning to trickle in about the new max based on. Apple's am one and so far. The verdict even among those who weren't given advance samples is pretty positive. The common factor all reviewers are talking about is just how cool the chimps run. Anthony came to me actually within probably about an hour and a half of getting his hands on the mac minis like the fan doesn't turn up and i was like. Wow that's pretty cool While the macbook air does thermal throttle. It is apparently not a significant hindrance. That's something that anthony has been working on his well. Unfortunately some of the tools that we rely on for measuring cpu power states clock speeds. And all that kinda stuff don't exist because some of them are intel specific tools that run specifically on intel processors and unlike on the pc where they're sort of like diagnostic utilities for absolute days. Many of which are community supported or open source on the mac. There's not a whole lot so when something really fundamental changes like this it can take a little bit of time for well for anything to kind of come out that allows you to dig into it Fortunately though you can measure performance at the very least we do have a thermal camera so there are definitely things that we can do and so far. It's looking pretty good. The mac mini and macbook pro rarely if ever even have to ramp up their fans in order to reach maximum performance and don't seem to suffer from any thermal throttling. That was actually something. That if i recall correctly is speculated but since everything that i say about max is automatically wrong. I don't think i'll be getting any credit for that. I think what i said was perhaps the difference between the mac the macbook air and the macbook pro is in terms of performance is not necessarily going to be core configuration or clocks bees or anything like that but rather just cooling solution and then just allowing it to throttle f. You're doing something that's an like an extended load an attack shows the m one outperforming intel's tiger lake mobile processors which are their latest and says that the m one in its maximum performance designed with a small fan is quote unquote astoundingly good with software support on day. One looking good due to rosetta too. I was really impressed with rosetta. Twos ability to just take ob s which it is amazing the kind of criticism that i faced over that video it was like people were like what kind of benchmark is obese is a benchmark of. Here's a random utility. That's pretty people. Yeah does not have a native That does not have a native version. For 'em one and i'm gonna just install it and see what happens and i'm going to like scream. Capture and like encode video and. it's a very industry. It's it's definitely needs but it is a very industry tool. It is used by almost everyone that does things that obese could be used for so it's like What kind of a benchmark is that. I don't know like interesting. Earn so rosetta to for those not familiar. Apple's x eighty six emulation layer that allows apple silicon macs run software that has not yet been optimized for the new hardware now typically this incurs a massive performance penalty. So if you look at something like emulation even emulating a game cube game. Upc that is many times more powerful than a game cube to play spiderman or whatever so clearly what apple is doing is not emulation in a traditional sense. What they're doing is what is it on the fly like binary translation or something like that. I forget what the term is But it's a- if i recall correctly it's like a type of emulation but what's really interesting is it seems like they have some kind of hardware acceleration for it. So let me see if i can find the source. For this data data memory model mismatch you have to dance. Straight up implemented the x eighty six consistency model on their cores. That's kind of detail that emulation performers for different architecture. That's really freaking cool. So they actually baked in Features that are going to make way better at emulating x eighty six so other on devices would have to fully translate load store from x eighty six to arm compatible functions between memory model mismatch. But m one is able to do without this extra translation step

Weve got the MacBooks with Apples new custom M1 chip

"So before we get your verdict. Which maxed it send you. They send the mccullough. And how long have you been using them. you know. it's only been since late last week. Just just a handful of days. But i got all three of the new maximum. Have the chip in them. And that's the macbook air macbook pro and also. The mac mini that little desktop. That apple forgets about trip. You have been comes back to every once in a while all right so bottom line. Do they look to hype. I would say they live up. To some of the hype. The hype is a little bit preliminary because a lot of things that you may want to do with these max requires software does not optimize for them yet running emulated mode but the two big things i think consumers are taking away from this are number one. The mac book air has lost the fantasy fan list system which is nice and a lot of ways that is true and also in the preliminary testing. I did battery. Lights is fantastic. So that is that is true. Big thing so they think they have definitely lived. Up to the hype. Let's take the one time. We'll show the mac book air because that is far and away the most popular in the macbook lineup. How has been macbook air. Been for you and fan configuration. Is there a real difference in the experience. Gm run quieter. What exactly how exactly is it. Running this thing in the back. Bogere has always been one of my favorites. I used to call it the most universally useful laptop you can buy. It's just a great middle ground for a lot of people to we start from whether you're from serving what laptop to get usually. It's not that loud but sometimes it could give that fan kicks in and it's like a playstation for you just hear out of nowhere this big speak fan doors. You're like that happening my lap right now. That's that's crazy. Because he'll it's doing a lot. I get it even even the base Macbook air just ships with a you know intel core. I three or did until until recently. So i tested the early twenty twenty match booker. This thing was just refreshed back in like march with the new m one version on the outside. They look the same. They haven't changed the body if you're looking for great new developments like extra ports or touchscreen or hcf or anything like that. You're not getting any of that. It's all on the inside. The big changes are the they got rid of the fan replaced it basically with aluminum heat spreader which just as a big you know heat sink that dissipates heat and of course got that m one chip in it and at least in the testing i did. Obviously it's much quieter because there's no fan fan. I'm a fan of removing moving parts. That the tutor on the fan of not having a fan and removing moving parts wherever possible so anything fan spinning hard drives optical drives. That's the stuff that breaks down while the most frequently when we talk about the game consoles i think one of the big advantages of the older ones had spinning drives and spinning hard drives. And that's breakdown parts that boot so when you get rid of that stuff you actually have a more reliable product and when i ran a battery test on the air it ran for almost seventeen hours on my video streaming test which the little bit a little bit not much a little bit tougher. The test apple does and they said they got eighteen hours out of it and that is that's a big thing right though the big song point here is this thing because fewer moving parts runs off of his mobile processor to last a lot longer. You think hold up over time or is that this is a new mac book or new battery impression and it it aware down time for that that difference whereas down over time i think apple is going to send a strike team to your house now because you call the what bobo processor. And they're gonna to get a phone a phone and it's true in some of the early you know people accidentally uploaded benchmarks of preliminary units of these over the summer And they were listening to having the asx fifteen in the words or something similar basically a version of the ipad and iphone chips and apple has at least name this ship something different they call the m one which again does say mobile to make. But it's a computer version of it. with You know it's got it's got four high efficiency courts and four high-power cores though we can do both very strenuous stuff but also chill out on the high efficiency course and not use a lot of power. You know listen. Any rechargeable battery will lose steam over time. You know that. Said if you have a mac book from a couple years ago you've definitely noticed like it doesn't say charts as long as you shop sure that will be true year. But i'd rather start with seventeen hours and twelve.

MacBook Air with Apple's own M1 chip is faster and has better battery life than Intel-based predecessors

"And speaking of that our final blizzard of reviews for probably this year blue in this morning the embargoes for reviews of macs using the new emlyn ships broke this morning. Let me get two of the devices out of the way before we focus more on the meat of the interesting stuff. Which in my opinion is the mac. Air all include links to these reviews in the show notes even if we don't delve into all of them deeply at the verge chris. Welsh says the mac mini with the new ship is a mixed bag. Existing apps run well and the price is certainly appealing but with ram limited bizarrely to sixteen gigabytes and the inability to upgrade that ram and since it doesn't support external. Gpa's could you really run this as your main machine. His conclusion though was mostly positive. Quote spending a few days with the twenty twenty. Mac mini has shown me that it's a barn burner of a miniature desktop. It outperforms most intel macs in several benchmarks runs apps reliably and offers a fantastic day to day experience whether you're using it for web browsing and email or for creative editing and professional work that potential will only grow an apple inevitably raises the rams ceiling and hopefully bring back those missing usb ports. These six hundred and ninety nine dollars. Starting price is tempting but most people will be better off upgrading to sixteen gigabytes of unified memory. Which puts you at eight hundred and ninety nine dollars. Doubling the default six hundred and fifty six gigabytes storage makes that cost climb higher to one thousand ninety nine dollars but even then the price to performance ratio for the mac mini has never been better than with this. Change over to apple silicon. Even if you ignore iphone apps completely transition is off to an impressive start considering just how smoothly everything comes together. And just as ever the mac. Minis flexibility is what makes it special and quote. Also at the verge. Neil patel tackled the macbook pro with the chip and he concurred great performance. Great display great battery life but again why ram limited to sixteen gigabytes and also this kind of got lost in the shuffle of the original announcement but only two usb ports only two period only to on a pro machine guests. I'm gonna be holding onto this last macbook pro with actual ports and sd card reader and hdmi etc until it literally is on its last legs. Anyway knee lies conclusion quote. There are two things to say about the thirteen inch. Macbook pro with 'em one chip one. The m one and the work apple has done to make a difficult processor. Transition seamless remarkable success and to this particular mac book. Pro doesn't necessarily seem like a worthwhile upgrade over the macbook. Air with an m one chip. Yes it offers slightly better sustained performance and a little more battery life than the air. But i would happily trade back. Those seconds of faster rendering time on the pro for the hours of frustration caused by the touch bar. And if you have much more serious performance needs it seems likely that you might want more than two ports sixteen gigabytes of ram and only one external display so. This machine is a twitter. An excellent fascinating twitter buddy between her nonetheless and quote

ICYMI: Those superfast new Apple Macs

"It's jefferson graham talking tech. I wanted to fill you in on apple's latest announcement which is three new computers with the new. M one chip as always apple says the new computers will be faster and they'll have better battery performance. Want to hear more. Let me fill you in. So the macbook air the thirteen inch macbook pro. Not to be confused with the sixteen inch which doesn't get the new chip. And the mac mini all the new chip so from what i picked up from the presentation. It's really the mac mini. That will be the most radical because the mac mini has always been a slower computer Aimed at people who just didn't want to spend a lot of money on computers The new one is seven hundred dollars you do. Have you do have to add in a monitor on top of that but it sounds like a pretty nice little thing to have on your desk Apples calling the chip. The emma one. They end basically if you ever get bored when apple in their presentation just tells you over and over again. About how fast these things are you snooze during this presentation because they really went into hardcore geek. I look forward to the increased power. I've not had that much trouble with my macbook pro. It's pretty fast as it is. My main issue is noise. you can get really noisy. The fan Is kinda loud and they said that one of the new computers is not going to have a fan. So i'm excited about that. Beyond that apple said the new operating system which is called big sur will be out on thursday. I look forward to seeing that. But i would recommend that everybody wait to download it to make sure that any of the apps that you're using

What happened during the troubled Big Sur launch, and why

"Apple released mac. Os eleven big sur. On thursday. Anyway it tried to expecting the best macrumors ran a piece. Highlighting of the operating systems planned improvements including the aesthetic redesign. The ios inspired control center a notification center the changes to affari the updates messages and the list goes on. We could spend all day talking about those though. The bigger stories today is the people who spent all day trying to download and install the blessed update seeing that ran peace in the middle of the day. Thursday saying that the downloads for big sur. Were super slow and that people were encountering installation delays of hours or even days in opposed at one forty nine. Pm pacific seeing that said this seemed to be very slow with the update. Failing completely for some customers after saying had about seventeen hours remaining the big sur installation failed five or six times for one scene net reporter and now won't restart now. I pointed out the time on that because just ahead of yesterday's mac. Os ken live. I checked apple system status page. It said that. The mac os software update issue had started around ten am pacific and was resolved by one fifteen pm. That was apparently a bit optimistic at about three thirty pacific cult posted a piece under the headline apple thinks is frustrating delays in macos big sur downloads sometime later. The headline was amended with the words. Update maybe not because yeah not checking apple system status page overnight. Last night apple had updated. Its message saying users may not have been able to download muko software updates on mac computers. The timeframe listed ten am through five fifteen pm pacific. All's well that ends well yeah. I wish i can say for certain that it had in fact ended mac. Os ken listener. Eric sent me an e mail around seven pm. Pacific saying after a forty minute attempted download the update for his twenty eighteen macbook pro just decided to fail. Sad trombone says eric war and that's the one. Apparently the call went on to say thursday wasn't a banner day for several apple services and they were not kidding. Macrumors ran a piece at two in the afternoon. Saying apple is having trouble with a number of services at this time and along with problems that are preventing people from installing mac. Os big sur and slowing down third party apps apple card apple pay maps and message are experiencing issues third party apps. Yeah seem so yet. Another piece from macrumors told the long delays in launching apps or people being unable to open mac apps at all. The problem seems to have been tied to apple's developer. Id notary service as for. Apple's own services seems to have been seriously troublesome macrumors indicates that apple card and apple pay suffered a complete outage with users unable to complete apple pay transactions traffic info and navigation and rounding for maps were also unavailable that outage ran from noon pacific to one forty macrumors updated story at two thirty pacific saying that apple had resolved all of the outstanding issues. Is it possible that apple just trying to do too much in one day. In addition to the big sur release apple also released updates for some of its productivity and creativity applications one piece from apple insider says apple on thursday released updates for i work and garage band while another piece from the same site says apple updated final cut pro and logic pro. The first piece says the i work and garage band. Updates bring their design in line with the big sur aesthetic new icons and a refined design for pages numbers and keynote according to the report that plus the usual stabs and purves as for garage band. There seems to be quite a bit. That's new including customization of region colors and tracks eighteen hundred new apple loops over one hundred ninety new instrument patches and fifty vintage and modern drum kits all of that plus a bit of the big sur design language for everyone then there are tweaks for the computers coming soon. According to apple insider garage band has been tweaked to improve performance and efficiency on mac computers powered by apple silica for apple silicon that final cut pro and logic pro were updated as well and by the way. I'm not being lazy. I'm not saying the x at the end because apple's not lost. I suppose in the move from roman numeral ten to eleven

"macbook pro" Discussed on Vector Podcast

"Sponsored by brilliant. There's a story about Steve. Jobs coming into the MAC product meeting dropping an ipad on the table and and asking them in typical Steve Jobs fashion. Why the Mac just couldn't do that couldn't be that instant with a battery that lasted the whole day? Thanks to the Halo Halo. The IPOD and iphone and ipad apple had gone from a beloved if Niche Computer Company to a mainstream technology powerhouse sales of IOS west of Isis. Were dwarfing anything. They'd ever seen with Mac. Os Devices and higher levels of computing. Were becoming approachable and accessible to more people than ever before the same desires drives that led to the creation of the IPAD led to the evolution of the whole new generation of macbooks. It started with twenty eleven and the Mac macbook air and ultra portable that became ultra popular so much so it went onto defined a generation of knockoff ultra books what could a Mac book pro do that was less us about traditional power users and more about empowering the much larger mainstream Pro Sumer market. Or you know if you're cynical you could call that the desire to sell appro machines at pro prices to the far larger amount of people who are starting to self identify as pros fast because the pro market was changing as well. Sure you you still had your ultra high end pros who worked on cutting if not bleeding edge video audio photography animation science and other areas where they constantly constantly needed to render and bounce an expert and model and compute more and faster than ever but thanks to software like final cut pro ten and logic ten and light room and ex. Coding Coda gear costs coming down and processing power coming up. You also had people starting new companies and side hustles. who also wanted pro machines realistically stickler sure but even aspirational even if only the twenty damn chrome tabs open without freezing up? Those are the conditions the ingredients that I believe led led to the two thousand sixteen macbook pro to see if apple could do with the pro. What they done with the air? Never Mind what they've done with the IPAD. You can see it in that very first Mac book pro WPRO lineup. There was a stripped down model at the bottom that apple expressly said was for those who always wanted a retina macbook air but there was no loaded up model at the top for people who wanted a more classical more powerful MAC book pro so much. So the whole line was sarcastically. Referred to by some as the macbook air pro and in a way the strategy worked it totally worked the twentieth sixteen macbook pro. And it's iterative reportedly sold better than any macbook pro before it. A whole a new generation of pros bought into them hard and are readily admit. I'm one of them. I- legit loved everything about that generation of pros except for the anemic Webcam and and of course the keyboard issues that gained so much attention later but traditional high end pros felt abandoned forgotten. Maybe even a little betrayed. And that's just the beginning of the story I'm Rene Ritchie and this is vector. Now I'll get to the keyboards a scalding hot minute. I swear it's what everyone wants to hear about. I know but but I'm going to quickly cover a couple of other things. I starting with the memory for the first couple of years. The then you macbook pros were limited to sixteen gigabytes of memory. Sorry that's because they used L.. PDR three or low power DDR three memory and because Intel was behind schedule and getting behind her LP DDR four. We're supported reported higher. Memory limits just hadn't rolled out yet back then apple wasn't willing to sacrifice on power efficiency which meant battery life so they stuck with the sixteen gigabyte limit and used custom storage controllers and ultra fast. SSD To try to make swap fields so fast. Most people wouldn't really notice a limit if they hit and aside from just hating the number on the the SPEC sheet most people didn't but of course I end pros did so by twenty eighteen apple reversed. Course they went back to the non low-power DDR four memory Added an option for thirty two GIGABYTES and also add extra power cells so the overall battery life wouldn't change and the sixteen inch now goes all the way up to sixty four gigabytes they also started started increasing the storage options going up to four terabytes of SSD last year and a whopping eight terabytes of SSD. This year with the two thousand Sixteen Mac book Pro Apple also went all in on USB and thunderball three two ports at the low end four points at the high end gone were the US BA in hd reports the card slot and MAG safe. And if you want them back or anything else you had to use adapters now. Some people decried that as being hostile to pros but paradoxically it really wasn't it was hostile title to the very mainstream humor's apple was targeting. See proser used to adapters. Fire wire four hundred fire wire eight hundred. Vga Display Port HDMI mini display report. Thunderbolt compact flash see fast and hubs because there are just never enough ports regardless of what type they are. It's the reality of working in production environments where equipment ranges from very old very new and. There's just tons of it. You get used to adapters. You actually start to prefer adapters. You can throw away your old adapters as you get new gear when you cables and take advantage of the Newport's and their throughput but you can't ever dig out an old port and shut in a newer better one. I just had to buy a new C.. Fast reader for this camera right here so the always goes on but the mainstream users that people who just have tons of USB peripherals including the lightning to USB cables apple kept shipping with iphones until just this very year because they are so mainstream. The people who aren't using cinema cameras and their wacky often proprietary storage formats but the far more ubiquitous cameras that made SD card slots so convenient apple was the company that dumped the floppy drive for USPA to begin with and they certainly seem to believe USB would take off just as fast but it hasn't and unlike almost everything else with the macbook pros apple hasn't reverted on this not by a single court or slot time has eased some of the pressure. But not all of it not yet. It's clear though apple still thinks it will the other big complaint about the fifteen inch macbook pros especially early in the middle years was thermal throttling. It's a complicated issue but one that's actually simpler to explain. The two thousand sixteen macbook pro chassis was designed for Intel chips. That would quickly shrink down onto ten nanometers increasing power but also balancing it with greater efficiency. But until hasn't been able to come through and now years and years behind schedule even when they do push out new versions of the old chips. They're chronically late in making the specific versions apple needs to be available and often can't even keep up with demand when they do so apple. Apple is chosen to manage the problem instead. There was a bug in the twenty eighteen version. That made people think apple had just failed to manage the thermals completely but apple apologized for it and it was fixed fixing software update still. It became almost a cliche in so many videos and literally every comment section. Now Apple has opinions on this stuff that some would disagree with big-time take time. They don't seem to mind running hot even at thermal limits like not at all. They also don't mind using faster chips that can't sustain peak performance because they firmly believe those chips hips still benefit. Burst intensive workflows. Cynics would argue. That apple needs to market a core. I nine machines just to keep up with the competition for the SPEC sheet pragmatists. That apple is is making the best of a bad situation like architect doing everything from metal to the accelerators on the t to chips to the GP us to work not just with the processors but around them which is why people who download and run. Benchmarks can't really see your understand what's hitting CPU GP or accelerator blocks anymore. or how but for people who run in show Oh real world. WORKFLOW tests overall results have shown consistent year over year improvements. Just not as big as anyone including apple with liked which is why the new sixteen inch macbook PRO has AINU thermal system to better address sustained workloads when apple launched the twelve inch macbook in two thousand fifteen. It came with two huge changes to import. The first was the force touch track. Track Pat I know. I know we'll get to the keyboard I swear. But this is important for context at the time apple had what we're already universally regarded as the best track pads in the the business but it wasn't enough for them they wanted to push the boundaries so they got rid of the actual mechanical track pads switch and put a virtual one in its place when the computer was off off. It felt like a solid dead piece of glass and metal when the computer was on though that's solid piece used proprio sensitive trickery to come alive and make you think you felt an actual click where none really existed yet. Physics was allying fingers liars. It was a huge risk. People love the macbook track. Pack but Apple Apple believe the changes were for the better they would remove the hinge like effect where the top of the track pad barely clicked and the bottom clicked a lot and make for a more consistent overall overall better experience and they were totally right going on five years later while the force press parts have never caught fire. The overall track PAT has been impure. Fire it's now the better best track pad in the business and I daresay people love it. Even more apple also had what we're universally regarded as some of the best keyboard in the business as well but again it wasn't good enough for them they also wanted to push the boundaries there so they went with the butterfly switches and metal domes. That were four times. There's a stable. They also made each bigger and more concave. Some people legitimately liked it better myself included others decidedly. Did Not some that disliked it. I saw a fair compromise for a computer as ultra portable as the twelve inch macbook. Others again did not not even going on five years later though. That keyboard hasn't hasn't caught fire. It's been on fire. It's now commonly regarded as one of the worst keyboards in the industry. And while some people still like the feel better others still hate. It's breathing everything guts and everybody. Everybody hates its failure rates. And here's where apple has its biggest problem in the very beginning right when apple releases changes like the forced forced touch track pat and the butterfly keyboard and people push back on them hard. It's impossible to tell one from the other s because humans hate change so when there are immediate media complaints apple just holds firm. They truly believe they made the right choices for the right reasons. And that as chain version fades people will see what they saw and and they'll come to believe the choices were right. The reasons valid and the benefits undeniable. And it happens almost all the time so before any widespread reports on failures players as well confident in the keyboard and their choices and that anyone still change adverse would still come around apple. Went ahead and push the butterfly keyboard out to the macbook pro but with there's some critical differences first even though the macbook pro was designed to be more portable to appeal to more portable pros unlike the twelve inch macbook. It wasn't designed to to be Ausra portable so the segment of people who didn't like the butterfly switch as much as a scissor switch. But we're willing to accept it on the macbook just weren't so willing to accept it at all on the macbook pro also the twelve inch macbook. Still had a row of function keys even if they were butterfly function keys the macbook pro. Replace that in Tyre row with a touch bar one that took away the escape key one of the most important keys to developers who had become the single biggest segment of the pro-market again while well some people including me preferred the new butterfly. Keyboards others really really hated them. And nobody nobody hated the old scissors. which ones then the stories about failure? Failure rate's started to hit I. The keys would get stuck presumably from dust and debris getting in when they weren't supposed to and then being unable to get out second high usage keys. He's with sometimes either stopped connecting and not enter a character when pressed for bounce.

"That was the first specked up ultra book, and it was really bad. I like it was really, really slow because if you recall as these were and flash storage, generally in those kind of Kasese you'd want a computer were extremely expensive. Yeah. So it launched with a slow, slow, slow hard-drive that they got out of an ipod, and that's what abled them to make the system so thin. And there was a variant that launched, I think, after the hard drive version that had a whopping sixty four gigabytes of flash memory, and it was really expensive. But they were. They were there before anybody else was and they did. You know the macadear still is like the template for thin in light laptop, they they came up with what to do with that. I mean, I, I know some people who still have their twenty eleven and twenty twelve map book airs and keep them to keep them plugged in all the time. Batteries just completely. Yeah, because the batteries toasted just get a Chromebook. Yeah. I mean, it's it's like the same experience because that's all you can do with MAC book. Air is run a browser at this point. Yeah. So if if that's if that's the answer to the MAC air, Brendan, what would you recommend to someone who is in a creative profession and says, this new macbook pro doesn't really seem to tick all my boxes. Where else can you look and what else might fit the Bill outside of apple? I think that it really again, it depends. So subjective. I really like the razor blade. Their hardware has gotten very, very good. But the razor blade also runs kinda hot. I've been noticing I was running a lot of tests concurrently with the new macbook pro and around the same speeds. Like the macro consistently runs like cool to the touch. I almost recoiled like the razor blade was so hot. But if you were the, we have a laser through Mountlake. Infrared thermometer here we should. We should try that out. Yeah, so the razor blade is pretty good. I think that there are some ThinkPad workstation, gray laptops that are really big, really chunky. But you know, it cools the internals you're gonna get higher more sustained speed out of the out of chips inside which is good, and you're gonna get way more ports way more ports and super comfy keyboard. And if you know if you don't mind being plugged into the wall, which I think a lot of credit pros don't really care. They're gonna carry the PowerBook wherever they go. That could be a good way to go. And you know if aesthetics are important to you, if you wanna product that is well-made and not ugly, and but still does everything that you do think that the surface book to is really nice has some of the some of the advantages like a razor blade might have has Invidia graphics in the higher end versions. There's fifteen inch version now big screen and on top of that, you can. You know, you can also get specked out to near MAC book prices. I know that you can get it up to six thousand dollars, but you can spend a lot of money on those guys. Plus it's a full touchscreen. Well, there you go. Yeah. I suppose we should mention because we would be remiss not to the software update that came in while you were testing the machine? Yes. Kyoto's little bit about that controversy flared up, you know, probably the worst timing that any any company could ever hope for on a Friday afternoon. So youtuber named Dave Lee found that the the macbook pro, the core, I nine specifically was throttling how fast it could go when it was being tasked with a really a really performance performance heavy task. I think he was running like w premier or something like that on it exporting like a four k. project to h two, six, four. And you can see if you look at his video, the performance. The little graph is just all over the place. It's spike, it looks like a song it's going up and down all the time. And apple, I guess over that weekend, put their heads down, figured out what the problem was. They released a performance patch, and so I ran the tests after that came out and I'm seeing much more stable performance. I think that it's still not as high as it could be..

"Designed ambient light sensor constantly measures color temperature and adjusted display so white stay looking paperweight and not fluorescent bluish white or incandescent yellowish white and because the macbook pro already has individually calibrated and color managed three displays the result is terrific looking at it side by side with a ten point five inch ipad pro it was almost a dental which is beyond impressive now there's no edge to edge redesigning new led true depth cameras at least not this year typically i pack as the big new tech first and then it filters down to mack there is a new keyboard though rather newish is that big news lastly have to wait and see it's a third generation butterfly domes which setup that's not what scissor key aficionados are going to want to hear but apple still believe it's a better more stable more precise overall typing experience and sticking with it it has been reengineer though and while i'm sure or at least i desperately hope liability will improve the major focus was on reducing the loudness that according to apple has been the source of the most intense feedback about the near keyboards and they're addressing it not just in volume but intone as well apparently the tone matters as much to human perception as the volume does have only had a few minutes typing time on the third generation butterfly keyboard but it is significantly less loud it also feels punchier like got more attitude when you're hitting it and it was to issue back but i'll be curious to see how it ages again vastly prefer the butterfly keyboard to the old loosey goosey scissors which keyboards but my preferences aren't everybody's preference and apple needs to keep a broad customer base happy here so i'll be curious to see other people's impressions when they get their hands on it apple did tell me their pro workflows team the vendors originally assemble the upcoming mac pro did i'll have their fair share of input during the design process so overall twenty teen macbook pro is getting a huge boost in performance especially at the top of the line fifteen ish level and i'm sure i'm not the only video editor positively drooling over the prospect of a six core four terabyte portable workstation to edit look pretend on a road to also terrific and i'm glad it's coming to the mac but i still want everywhere continuity troops on it if you have to but get it on my back apple tv please and thank you and the tea to continues to be the most fascinating architectural improvement to the mac in years you just can't beat security at the hardware.
