"Used to be like. I said the worst part of shopping online. Yeah it sounds like an ira l. like an in real life kind of post purchase. Kinda cross sell. You know what about internationalization is year. You know well entrenched and i believe you're expanding To more and more locations as as more our traditional retailers realized there's an opportunity here of the cross sell opportunity but then and then being happy returns to certify. Drop off location. How are you handling potential expansion of the brand. Maybe it'll start off in canada having more closer to home and then what. What are the plans in the future from an internationalization perspective. Yeah our international expansion is piggybacked off of what's available in shop fi. So for example the software component of what we do the portal software can be internationalized. All the currencies that are supported by shop. Affi- later this year. We're introducing local language so you know shopper. In france could actually review the retailers return portal in. You know native french but today everything we do internationally involve printing label and shipping back. Where we're headed in. What's on our road map End of twenty-one beginning of twenty two is actual in-country term bars so the same infrastructure that we built here the drop off locations supported by the processing hubs. That's what we're tackling next candidate is actually our first market. That's part of the plan and same idea of can we connect the return portal in the work. The shopper does to initiate the return online with the physical drop off by having you know presence in in locations. Yeah there's a lot of like you know. A significant retailers all around in canada. But that may be our canadian specific. I'm so it's interesting to see. Hopefully that kind of negotiations are open now. And it's nice You set a precedent to obviously with twenty six hundred locations and fedex and other locations. That you know have made the choice to use us. You have a case study. It's gonna probably make the incentive for the offer easier when you start communicating with the powers to be in canada on the retail locations. That are close to canadian consumers. Exactly and that's the idea is that we can have sort of built over the past five and a half years here. Every one of those relationships to get to the network. We have in our hope when we enter. Canada is that we'll be able to strike one partnership and have network that can serve the whole population us what we've done in the us as a case study. So that's the exact idea so david. This show has a diverse. I'm sure you know this but has a very diverse range of entrepreneurs that listen each week. I mean we're up to almost ten thousand dollars or so and from your vantage point. What sort of advice would you give brands today. Store owners today. These brands are really eager. To grow and scale and scale is something different. Maybe than the growth part of a business. But i'm just curious from your perspective as you see a lot of success. You know even going to the app store. I see like mac walden andy. Swimwear and rossi's untuckit draper james. I mean there's a whole bunch of pretty signature shop. If i plus brands that see value in your solution. I'm just curious knowing these partners and other you know brands on other platforms. It's interesting to me. What do you see that that makes a lot of these brands overall successful. Yeah i think You know at the highest level. I would describe it as a focus on core competence and a willingness to work with enabling technologies in areas. That aren't core. So i think about like shop affi- success for example the willingness of of these brands to rely on shop affi- as the commerce platform i think with regard to our domain returns an exchanges i think it's a willingness to rely on a company like happy returns to provide this thing which let's face it returns and reverse logistics is not core to most most merchants. What's core things like a great product a great assortment a phenomenal brand. That has an emotional connection the shopper experience and the way that they actually interact with the brand rate for the folks that we've worked with and we've we've started with some of these when they've been small and then watch them scale. I think it's really a focus on the things that are unique and a willingness to partner on the things that aren't core. The logistics is messy. It's hard we've probably spent more time thinking about this problem. That anyone in the world at this point it added for five and a half years. And so i think a willingness to say. Hey i want partners. That can allow me to stay focused on. The things that i know are going to drive. Long-term value my business which really ends up being product and customer experience and a willingness to work with partners for the things. That aren't and i think you can see this. It's not just happier turns but you know you see this in payment options. You see this sort of marketing tool kits. There are a lot of other examples of businesses in the shop. Fight ecosystem that are you know have have figured out. One part of the journey and merchants that are scaling are trying to identify those best in class technologies. And saying in a way it's it's freeing it's like. I don't want to have to worry about this review and expert in this. I have the right partner. I'm finding them in the shop ecosystem. I'm just going to be able to focus on the things which are unique and make me great as company and they as part of that whole kind of plus a technology partnership kinda group. There's you know plus certified at partners It's so interesting when eight sas companies like yourself. Go down that journey and learn more about well. What does it take to become a certified plus technology partner because now shop. If i you know. I always say this law in the show but we do commerce eighty percent of commerce very well. It's typically that last twenty percent that needs to be filled in with a partner connection or a very specific marketing apper. Bi tool or in your case you know a proper reverse logistics kind of return process. This is this is all part of the overall customer. Experience is not maybe a native solution shop fi. Obviously and so. It's nice that that these pieces can all come together. And that's the reason why the shot by ecosystem is such a flourishing and very open and communicative kind of environment. People are just there to share and help other brands. All but entrepreneurship. And i think that's really exciting. Yeah i have to say. It's inspiring to sort of see how enabling that ecosystem is and it creates entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs follow their passions and as you described back led an ecosystem. Help you grow rather than having to worry about. Becoming an expert in every component of selling online to to sort of say like this ecosystem provides me with a best in class set of technologies and experiences and supporting services. So that i can focus as the on my passion and man it it. It's really fun to work with brands that we have discovered either through the app store. Or just you know as as members of the community and.

"Swear to god and everybody was hitting me up in my. Dm's yesterday saying did you finish it. Did you finish it. Oh my gosh wait till you finish it. It's so good it's it really is something that doesn't disappoint. And that is my danielle report. Daniel sony many people are texting and talking about how they formed coups at work and walked out. Yes i think we haven't neutra online twenty four. Let's see what's going linea tre welcome to the show. Hi hello so okay. You staged a coup at work. Tell me how you did this. We need to learn from you. All right so by our manager was being difficult she wanted us to prostrate a different department and we were all upset because she didn't know how to do our job so whenever anybody will call out or if it was a lot of call outs she would call somebody in. Because she didn't know how to do the job so one day playing all of a slam. We got tired of it to all of us plan to call all the same day. We all call it out on the same day and she had to do all our jobs and department in one day. Did it change anything at work now. Not fairly but she's not there anymore and most of us are to me. That sounds like a very significant change. So when you were doing it. I mean were you just really passionate about it. We're gonna do this. we're going to. We're going to prove a point where it's a little a little frightening i mean. How did you feel when you were doing this. It was it was a little. Because i didn't. We all didn't care. I didn't think everybody was gonna call out. I thought somebody was gonna pro now. And if she was. I know you can't call out but everybody off. We all texting each other and everyone's out. Everybody was like here. We saw out. I was like. Oh my gosh we are going to get in so much trouble when we get the work and then when we got the work she was just bad she had attitudes and talk to any of us all feel like really super nice to our and she was all you guys pulled out. Why did you call out. And i'd say jersey. You can't add this out. You know. I have to say there are several ways to look at it. If for instance if all of us together were were collectively passionate about something going on iheart media that we we really disagreed with and we all banded together and walked out. It's actually because there is. There is a level of respect for each other. We're doing it with each other. You know and actually we're doing it because we like our jobs. We need to prove a point to the company that they need to step up to the plate and they need to fix these things because we like working here otherwise we'd just quit. You know by the way the majority of us we all know how to do each other's job. It was only a few of us who didn't and she went and listen because if it was busy and i was the only one there because somebody else did come out. She couldn't come down and help me. So then i would be saying. We're we're and when she would say. Okay i'll come down. She was the on the computer next to me and to me emails while i have like fifteen things to do now right. That sounds like me and the show all the stuff. That's scary scotty. Being all the technical stuff that producer. Sam does. And i could never do that stuff. So if if they formed a coup against me i would be powerless. I would be sitting here. Like i don't know i would cool with you. Thank you for listening to us. You go have a great day. Okay guys thank you so much. Yeah look all the texts. We formed a coup against our eighth grade. Math teacher here. Someone that says they work at a convenience store and the whole second shift walked out locked the doors and left. Thank god. They locked doors right. That was nice. It's just very interesting and you can't look at it. It's just like civil disobedience. it's actually there's there's a behind it you know like i said if you didn't you just leave you just quit like i don't care walkout but scary. You're not walking along. Screwed where i would say. Yeah we all agree. I'm the only person would agree with you do it. And nobody would look you know. I think i may be an unusual person in a profession that i it admits freely. I cannot do what you people do. I can't do what you do. that's why you're here. That's why we're successful. Because i i couldn't do this by myself. I'm not at all and so third time. There's a time to time moment when you guys have a problem whenever i'm gonna help you. I'm gonna try to help you work it out because i need you here and tape. Scratch go made it through anyway. So i thank you for what you do in anytime everyone anyone ever asked me. Why is your so successful. And i'd say well. I can't really take any credit. The only credit i take surround myself with people that are smarter than me. That really is the only thing i've done and i take full credit for that. Thank you all right so today on the bucket list of things to do former coo. How fun is that. we gonna take a break. Maybe maybe whatever a million different things a million different things happen to you in high school or when you were a preteen or you were a kid in. You're still holding onto these things and those are the good and bad things that make us who we are today. They are the great things that you can look in the mirror and congratulate yourself on. Yeah i mean the first one was enjoyable enough that i think this next one could be enjoyable I it's not. It's not particularly exciting for me. I didn't love a liked watching the first one. But i wasn't like watching like i need more of this. This is what i need more of But they'll figure out some way to make it work in. i'll watch it. That was their strategy. Was like we're gonna make two hundred million dollar Moonshot movies and now they figured it out. It's like hey no the stuff people are like well. Just keep doing that. "Freshman year we made a pact. I started it. I said. I want to be selected as the senior commencement speaker and she said to me. Well okay game on. I want to be selected as the music student who gets to sing the national anthem at graduation. So we quietly went about our business for four years and that gave me four years to write the speech of a lifetime. I kept a notebook because back then not only. Was there no internet. But there were no laptops and every time something interesting happens i wrote it down and so sure enough hard work pays off and i did get selected and she did get selected so we were the only two students on the day us at graduation at the university of rhode island and it was an incredible moment for both of us the day after that speech. I had gone back to the college newspaper offices to clean out my desk. Because i had worked there as a student and the phone rang. And i answered it thinking. It was someone wanting to advertise or whatever and it was the reporter who had covered the graduation for the nbc affiliate the tv affiliate in providence. So she said we're looking for entry level associate producer. I basically had a job in like two hours and had never really thought about going into tv. I'd been starting to interview with newspapers. Had no idea what. I was going to do and sort of said okay. Well this is just an opportunity. Let's just try it and see how it works out. So i ended up staying there for several years and rose through the ranks in the newsroom. And it was just an incredible experience but from there. I left to return to the new york area and go to work at dow jones. The wall street journal as an assistant editor and just found myself really embracing digital which was emerging at that time and was put on the team that built and launched wsj.com in nineteen ninety-six. So that's kind of how it happened. It was a strange trajectory but always focused on electronic media. Well it also speaks to the fact that you set goals that you have vision that you're okay it pivoting and you've got disciplined because you get up at five thirty in the morning. Most giving me too much credit but yes it was. it was an interesting trajectory. Sometimes luck was involved. And i just feel like lightning really struck twice for me because i was really involved in the evolution of the internet as a means of consuming information. One of my most fun memories was not. It wasn't fun of time. But when i look back now it's hilarious the day we launched one of the co founders was giving a demo and the site was already live and so people were were finding it and accessing it and back then bandwidth was a huge issue. We want telephone lines vividly. Remember someone running to security to have them make an announcement on the pa system. Everyone get off. the internet. Neal is doing a demo. Lean you can't make this stuff up. Tell the story a lot about how we went to do. A registration form and we didn't have a list of countries to put on. What wasn't even call. The drop down list at that point like we really invented some of these things so he's typecasting felt very similar to me in terms of becoming what is not even yet completely mainstream media yeah very analogous to the way. The internet was back in ninety six spoiled wild west twice a year career. Now right. wow that's cool. I love that story. And i would like to share three notes to pay homage to you. Do you know what that is. Yes for for those who were born after two thousand that would be the dial up sounds he got internet. Earning absolutely it's indelible in my memory. Yes for sure. They sound of the era for sure. So what are some of the other striking things that you've seen or been involved with as we've kind of segue from traditional into digital media dea passionate or gobsmacked about certain things and we should check with grammar girl about how. I might spell that if i had that. Not sure how to spell that either the thing that comes to mind immediately and i'm not sure it's the right answer to your question. But i think a lot about the evolution of the host read add. Do you know how much can my language right. It's still a huge part of our business that of course for your listeners who might not be intimate with podcasting as we are that is when the host actually physically takes a set of copy points and generates an ad that oftentimes must integrate personal experience with that product or service so that's been quite challenging over the years and i can remember a funny story back when mac weldon got its start. They were advertising on our parenting show. And then we should explain that. They specialize in men's underwear. We had the talking points and we always especially back then. We don't do it as much anymore because we do know so much more today in our hosts are so skilled at it but we would do calls with the agency or the the actual sponsor themselves and our ad broker mid roll now stitcher. Sm just to to get a feel for the campaign and to make sure we understood the goals the objectives things were still very passionate about today. We like to make sure we're delivering not just for our listeners but also for our sponsors so i don't remember who it was from quelled but he was in costco with his kid in his shopping cart and he was telling our parenting expert to talk about the human anatomy and to curse as much as she possibly could because that would yield a dramatically positive response to the ad now that was generated from the fact that very very early days. Mac walden was primarily advertising on comedy. Show where that kind of behavior is acceptable but a mother of eight is not going to talk about the size of her husband's package in an ad right. I mean it was justice so you we had to balance to deliver a strong response while preserving the integrity of our hosts and authors. Yeah that's always the balance and and one of my future shows. I'll be speaking with the head of sway and influence or company and it's very similar. Podcast hosts who are popular are certainly influencers That is how host read. Ads are are so well leveraged is you know it's in the voice of somebody that you have in your ears that you're listening to all the time. So they have a brand that they want to protect but the advertiser has a product that they wanna get their points across and so weird the lines. Sort of merge or crossover. I always call it a giant game of telephone because it starts way back at proctor and gamble or whatever. The consumer goods company is where the startup is. It's the product manager there who internally within the company decides they're going to invest in a podcast ad and then it goes through like seven or eight parties before it finally gets down to us and our team where we massage the talking points. Make sure they're genuine. They feel like the host. I mean all of our hosts are top of their field highly qualified subject matter experts. We're going to protect them. You know to the extent we can to make sure that we're giving them talking points that really match their persona that can feel genuine genuine. Yeah so it's really quite a process we even though we're really good at it. Now we've got it down to a complete science it is still challenging to pull it off. Well let's talk about some of those shows and and let's drop some names. you have some standout shows. You recently won an inaugural ambi. The nba awards are from a brand new organization. The podcast academy which is great very lustrous. So drop some names. Tell me about some of your shows and.
