"They'll reports We take? I 88 88. Ask Leo. That's the phone number. Uh Langdon on the line from Missoula, Montana. Hello, Langdon. Afternoon, sir. Afternoon. How are you? Other than I deserve, I I doubt that. I think you deserve a wonderful day. Appreciate that. I was actually calling in reference to call when you talked to earlier. Good. Yeah. Um, that was about the TV sound bar like where it was controlling the Yeah. He would turn up the volume on his Verizon Fi. Oh, system. I'm sorry. Sorry he would change the channel on his Verizon's Vaio system and when he went up a channel That the sound bar the videos, M R would turn up the sound. When he went down to channel the video Sound bar would turn down the sound. So what's your solution, right? Yeah. Did this happen to you? Not per se. I just worked in the industry. So if you, uh, he has to just go into the menu settings and What is that volume and they can change it from variable, uh to, um, fix fixed volume, not variable. Yeah, And so he also wants to turn volume walk on, so go to trick instead of variable and then turn volume walk on cool. So, um, the fixed and variable usually when you're connected via optical to the T V. It's my memory that fixed and variable doesn't do much. It's always fixed for optical right because the sound bars controlling the volume, not the T V. That's that's control. That's true, But with the remote and how the system works, it will it will send both signals at the same time, as it turned off. I see. I see. So you're telling the TV Hey, don't mess with the sound that that's correct. Is it a C E C issue Because a lot of people thought it might be C E C getting involved. Um, that are not. Yeah, just turned. So set the volume two fixed and what was the other setting? Turn on volume walk, volume lock. Turn that on. Okay. Hey, I appreciate that. Thank you, Langdon. You're very welcome. Alright? Yeah, you to see I love it. We have a great audience. Smart people. And, uh, there's pretty. I mean, I can't answer everything but There's pretty much nothing we can't solve. And we did find. The chamber also found a post on the Verizon forums that exactly duplicates is from last December. We've reached Li purchased video salad bar hooks up to our video TV through the audio relay Chelsea. I don't think this is not that issue because they're using A R C. Uh huh. But we'll put the link to that in there as well. Yeah. I love all the different solutions first, Take the batteries out of the remote for five minutes and put them in. Uh, Unfortunately, that didn't work any any other suggestions, tried deleting the remote repairing with files. I think there's a lot of ideas about what happens here Three pages of this, But this is the first one I've heard of turned on turn on a fixed volume. And volume lock. I like that seems like it'd be easy. To try anyway. See if that fixes it. Uh, the final post on this thread from on the Verizon forums is videos come out with a firmware update that seemingly fixes it. Okay, well, that's I should have. I should always mention that. Fact. Just make a note of this. My answer will always begin with update everything, and now we can try to solve it Update everything. Jan from Northridge. California is coming up in just a second. But first a word from our find sponsors. Our show today brought to you as it as it always is. The great folks that I drive backup is so important. I'm really happy to talk about. I drive any time they let me Because it's such a great way to back stuff up. One account. Next up everything. You've got a ton of storage for six bucks a month, and they've got I drive programs for Mac for Windows IOS Android. They've even got it. I've got it on my a sin Ology network attached storage. We've got it for servers so you can put I drive everywhere. It'll all back up to the same account you get. I think it's eight terabytes so much storage that you'll never run out. You can buy more if you had to. But I It's that's hard to imagine running out of storage at eight terabytes. But the other things that I drive does it are really important. It'll do local backup as well as cloud backup clouds. Good because if then, if you have a disaster You know, And what if the House burns down or something and you? Backups are local. You're going to lose everything anyway. But if you've got it up in the cloud, it's safe, no matter what happens. Also safe from Ransomware because they have a snapshot feature lets you roll back in time to prior to the ransomware, so your data will.

Biden, G-7 Leaders to Focus on China in Second Day of Summit

"The agenda again on the second day of the G seven summit in Britain, with leaders expected to sign a declaration of How better to respond to future health crises. Meanwhile, President Biden is to use the second day of the summit to call for a new Western alliance to counter China's growing influence. Let's go live to Carmel correspondent Rob Watson. Is there a word on the mood of all this? Rob much was made of the fact that they were all there in person. Able to meet face to face for the first time in such a long time. How would you assess the dynamics of what you've witnessed? So far? That's an easy one to answer, Julian, which is to say it's incredibly hard to assess it. Good morning to you in the morning to Kate and erratic and to everyone. Look, look, There's no doubt that they're trying to send a message. I mean, none of this stuff. You don't need to be the sharpest political analyst in the world to figure out this is incredibly well choreographed. It's to say you know that the Western alliances is back together. The group is back together of some have said, but You know exactly how the personal chemistry works out whether this summit will turn out to be significance or insignificance. My decades of experience of reporting on this stuff tends to suggest that you won't know until the dust settles, and that can take weeks. It can take days it could take months could take much longer. Let's break down. Then what they're saying about the coronavirus pandemic, not just dealing with it now, but dealing with the possibility of something else in the future. What are they looking to do here? We're going to sign a declaration. This has been called the Vaccine summit. So we've had the bit about the country's offering more vaccines to the to the less well off parts of the world. This is about signing a declaration on trying to manage better if there is another pandemic, but ideally to prevent another health crisis altogether. So that's about strengthening the World Health Organization. It's about trying to cut the length of time to develop Mac vaccines and treatments to 100 days and importantly, to improve surveillance networks around the world. In other words, if something develops somewhere that you figure it out much quicker than we figured it out in 2020 and 2019. And on

"All right, I hear you, Jody. How you doing? I'm doing good. Good to hear your voice is always always nice to talk to you. Then. Of course you The last time we spoke. She's been probably a couple of years. Always doing a big three d medical project shooting multiple three D cameras. Oh, wow, shooting a neighbor replacement surgeries for a surgeon's How interesting How interesting. So they'd get a three d model. They'd be able to rotate around and so forth. No. Actually, we were shooting actual surgery with three d cameras, and they would with three Our glasses, and we shot it before different sets of three d cameras, different angles so we could cut to whichever angle was the most interesting as being narrated by the surgeon. So it was trying to mix things are standing him right over the surge in the shoulder and watching this new person, So was this for training purposes. It was how cool It's a new a new technology where they custom make a knee replacement for you with your name on it, as opposed to taking measurements and then pulling it off the shelf pretty close. That's good. I'm gonna keep that in mind. And and kids take care of your knees because it's the first thing to go, right. Hey, 22 questions for today completely unrelated, and I wish I was in a place where I could take notes. But I had to run out, so I'll look at the We'll put them in the show notes. Of course, that's we always do that. Yeah. The first one is I'm on a Mac and I've been using its Challender application for a long time. And my phone is a Samsung Galaxy notes plus a nine plus sorry, and it has a its own native calendar APP. And for the longest time I've had no issues with those two calendars automatically thinking with each other so fed or something in one that automatically updates on the other, But that's stopped happening and I cannot figure For the life of me how to make that happen. And I have done tremendous amounts of Google research and finally decided I would call Leo and wait on hold and hear from the Yeah, Well, what's the expression you like to use is not Guru. It's shit Ice station. Leo, apparently, is what I'm calling myself now. I don't know. I don't know. Uh, so you're on. Tell me which platform you're on. Um, it's a It's a Mac OS, and it's gosh. And I'm so sorry that I'm not so you're using the using the iCloud, you're using the built in Mac calendar. Correct. Okay. And what do you wanted to? You wanted to sink between your phone and your Mac? Or you want to sync to another calendar program? No, both ways. And previously when I entered anything on one, it would automatically. Yeah, it should be doing that. Yeah. Yes, you didn't. You didn't know I could put it put an entry in my Mac on a certain date and paying us on my phone or vice versa. And now that's stopped, They absolutely won't sink and I go to you know the settings on my phone sync now. Nothing happens. I do the same thing on my Mac. Go to calendar app. Sit down. I am I have not intentionally changed anything. So I don't know what that Yeah, but you know how things change. You do updates and all of you know, you've updated IOS have updated Mac OS. I'm sure so things. Might get might get messed up. Uh, certainly the first thing to do is make sure your phone is still sinking and that it's sinking the calendars you want, You know, you can say which calendars are sink. And then you know you might have sink everything. Um, and make sure it's sinking all events or you can say what? How far back um, let me just think what else could be going on on the Mac? You want to make sure that your calendar is sinking to iCloud because that's how it does this. Through iCloud okay and make sure your iCloud account is active. Have you logged in the iCloud dot com lately? Actually, That's the first thing I would do. Log into iCloud dot com. There is a calendar there. And see if the stuff that you want is on that calendar. Okay, that will tell you something right away. If it isn't. Then you want to make sure that both the phone and the Mac are sinking. Connecting the iCloud properly, You know, check your accounts. Make sure the iCloud account is proper. You know Apple, I think, probably for security reasons. From time to time changes things they may have turned on two factor. There may have been things that have happened. Um, so that's probably the first thing it is. Make sure both the phone And the Mac are connected to iCloud and then on the Mac, you can. When you look at the iCloud, you can see which things are synchronizing and make sure the calendar is synchronizing. I synchronize everything. Address book calendar notes everything. Email. So make sure those are all turned on. But I think the first step would be go to iCloud comments and see what that calendar looks like. See if it's got everything Okay, because that's where that happens. Yeah, Samsung. It's thinking to my club. I'm sorry. I thought you said an iPhone. It's a Samsung phone. Yeah. Yeah, you know, so the sit now you've got to look at the Samsung phone and see where it's getting its data from. What I would suggest. In that case, I clouds fine if you're all Mac, But since you have an android device, I would suggest you set up Google calendar. Do you have a Gmail account or Google account? I didn't. Yeah, So so if you go to calendars dot google dot com, you'll see your calendar You can set up that account on your Mac and when and when you go in there, Make sure calendar is checked as something that's synchronizing. That means your Mac will synchronize with decal. What you want, because vehicle now is the connector. Yes, See, that's the problem is you have Android and Mac OS. You want to make sure the Google calendar, which is calendar dot google dot com. Instead of going high cloud go there..

"A reality. Virtual reality. Real reality. 88 88 ask Leo is my number. 8888275536 has told her from anywhere in the U. S. Or up north above the 49th parallel there in Canadia. 88 88 ask Leo. But if you are elsewhere, you could still call me But you have to use Skype or something like that to call shouldn't cost you anything. 88 88. Ask Leo. One thing we will not be talking about today is New Apple Mac books. What? I was pretty sure we would be But Apple, in their infinite wisdom, decided not to announce any new hardware on On Monday, when they had their keynote for the worldwide developers conference. They announced a lot of other stuff, tons of other stuff. Mostly it's all software, though it's an IOS 15 should be out in the fall and Mac OS Monterey. That's the new version of Mac OS also out on the phone. I am. We'll talk about that. When it comes out. No reason to talk about. Now there's some nifty new features. But no reason to get over excited. We've got a few months before they'll be ready. I'll be fully cooked. I guess the question is why no laptops and it must have to do I'm thinking. With a global chip shortage. I'll tell you why. Apple as is his want posted, you know they they they streamed the keynote. And then posted a copy of it on YouTube and Lo and behold in the tags. Of the YouTube video. Besides things like Apple and Mac OS and IOS, there was a tag for The Apple Silicon M one x chip, Unannounced and Mac Book Pro M one x in the tags. That's that's apple doing that, so I think that's a pretty good indicator. That they were thinking there's somebody didn't get the memo. They were thinking of man announcing those, and just the memo didn't come out. Mm. So what does that mean? Because I have people. I know you have people. You maybe those people waiting For the new MacBook pros or maybe New Mac Minis or other new Max. It's good news. I think that they have a upgraded ship. More professional chip, probably with faster graphics made more processors. More importantly, maybe more access to memory. The current crop limited to 16 gigs of RAM and More ports. There's only two thunderbolt ports USB four ports right now on the current and one Max. So the M one x presumably faster, better, wider. Uncut whatever it is, you know all the all the good adjectives. Um So I'm thinking they probably were thinking they were going to announce that Mm. And for whatever reason, they thought we can't produce them. It's funny because there's rumor. You know, it's all rumor driven in the apple world, and that was I was, You know, I apologize because I was repeating rumors. I think I was clear that this is my speculation, but I was repeating the rumors. John Prosser, who is a well known apple rumor guy, but I think he's starting to lose his luster. He already had to shave his eyebrows because his rumor last time was wrong, he said, if I can't remember what it was, but if there is not a new something, or rather ill, I think a new iPad. Maybe I don't know. I'll shave my eyebrows and he had to That was last apple. Q. No this time, he said. I know there's gonna be new Mac books. No, there weren't Another rumor guy love to dream said no no hardware. But he said that the day of the event So I think maybe you know it's one of those things where Apple was thinking they were going to be able to do it and didn't in the supply chain. Very hard to get Apple employees to to say anything because they know they'll be fired. And they know that Apple pulls all sorts of shenanigans to catch him leaking. For instance, putting out different code named Steve Jobs did that now I think it's still going on different code names to different people in different groups. And then if one of those code names, leaks, they know how we got you. Yeah, we made that up. That was a test and you failed. This shows code name Professor Laura. Station, Leo. That's my code name to see If it leaks out. I'll know it's Laura. It was actually or any one of you. So that didn't work too well. But Apple does that. You know, they do all sorts of things. They have aired their own internal police force. You could get thrown in Apple jail. Which is probably just an empty white box. I don't know. But you know, I wouldn't want to be there not for very long. So you never hear anything from inside Cupertino. But But the problem is, Apple's reach doesn't extend all the way to China. There's no Apple jail in China, so We get what we call supply chain leaks, The people who are making this stuff leak it out, and according to the supply chain Production of New Apple laptops won't begin until Q three. That's next month at the earliest. July through September, is Q three. So, uh, I've got friends. I've got family. I said wait for the new Max. And now they're mad at me. Maybe you are, too. I apologize. Apple has Let us down. Or maybe it's just the global chip shortages let us down. That may be more likely. Apple buys its chips ahead of time, and they pretty much bought up the entire capacity of their And one manufacturer, this side of the Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing company TSMC, uh, you know, so they're not there's that's not where the shortage lies. But apple use lots of other little side chips and stuff in there. Everything does Cars, everything. The global chip shortages real The pain is real. Meanwhile, Apple's putting out ads saying you're next computer is not a computer showing these geeks. People like me. I actually Completely resembled. These people at their desks with all the wires and monitors and all this stuff. Look, and then they go to the window and they look out and there's some nice young person. "Alan welcome to the show. Thank you for him for me. You are a flutter expert you have a podcast flying high with flutter and i'd like to explore flutter in this episode. it's been a while since we did a show about flutter. Tell me about how flutter has advanced in the last couple of years so using flooded for a long time. Maybe just a little bit over here. I would say that it's really advanced in terms of the amount of it supports. So it's kind of funny. When originally came out it was actually for web then. They kind of backed away from web and they went straight into android and ios and then they actually became full circle. Went back to going to adding now a web support so one of the things actually just came out recently as at web is now production quality or say so. It's pretty big so now you can build your app for for android and web all in production quality but now they're just added in the support for desktop. So that's windows mac and lennox with version. Two point oh and actually version two point two just got released a couple days ago as of this recording date and looks like they actually add in another couple of more platforms which is really surprising and i think it's quite big to add in so many platforms at once and so that's Uwb which i believe is windows ten and also xbox and i believe they're going to be trying to add support for kaizen in where west something like that so it seems like they're just keep kind of branching out the more platforms so that's quite amazing thing.

And i think it's quite big to add in so many platforms at once and so that's Uwb which i believe is windows ten and also xbox and i believe they're going to be trying to add support for kaizen and where west something like that

Apple Dominated the Global Wearables Market Again

"Remember when we used to debate whether tablets should be counted among traditional. Pc's for the purposes of figuring market share. Yeah it kind of feels like we have a similar conversation around wearable technology. I saw a couple of stories on wearables numbers yesterday. That seemed to be at ought read the fine print though and they are not both. Idc and counterpoint. Research seemed to see apple. Watch commending more market and the first quarter of twenty twenty one versus the same quarter a year earlier though you have to read deep into the. Id stuff to see it. A piece from macrumors covered the idc numbers scanning the firms chart idc. Apple's first first-quarter wearables market share at just under twenty nine percent. That is down from the just over thirty two percent it enjoyed in the first quarter of twenty twenty. Wow we did enjoy things in the first quarter of twenty twenty. Didn't we anyway a piece from. I'm more covered the counterpoint numbers which seemed to show something different. They didn't but they seem to. According to the thing years. According to i'm more apple took a thirty three point. Five percent share of q one up from thirty point three percent on the same quarter last year. See where i stumbled is on what they were counting. Idc was wearables while counterpoint was counting smartwatches specifically limit. The discussion to apple watch and the firms seem to agree. Apple watch grew its market share in the march quarter versus the same quarter a year earlier. According to idc apple started twenty twenty one the same way ended twenty twenty as the clear leader in the worldwide wearables market

"Apple's pro desktop could have up to forty course This rumor was broken by mark. Gurman about apple's impending arm plans and there's actually a handful of rumors. Let's get through all of them. So i up. Is that new macbook pros a fourteen inch and sixteen inch are shockingly coming featuring apple silicon. I don't think anybody saw this new. Macs with apple silicon. No no they were going to have the segmented line forever apple silicon and intel living in perfect harmony No no not happening. They have this like doing their own thing in house ever. They're going to have four thunderbolt ports. Hd my and an st card slot meant having hdmi back. How freaking awesome. Is that going to be for all the people that don't have hdmi on their laptop already. Like what an upgrade. I actually ran a dell. Xps thirteen to one as a daily driver for almost a year. I think and that was the thing that drove me most crazy. I thought it was going to be usb like a usb type and from time to time that was pretty obnoxious because my ubt is the taipei and i do like to use a mouse. If i'm actually sitting in doing something for a while at the computer. I don't really prefer wireless mice bluetooth. I find noticeably noticeably. Leg man i just love to see an industry standard for something like logitech slate. Speed properly tried light speed kills really well. Yeah but i mean you need a dongle. They're all taipei. So basically you're stuck with a dog goal no matter what if you want to plug a decent mouse into your laptop. But that wasn't the one that drove me crazy. The one that drove me most crazy most often was not having hdmi. Because you never know if you're going to be somewhere doing something

I the universe. The vastness the mystery the astonishing beauty of the stars. I love everything about it. And i devoted my life to studying it from adam's two galaxies from beginning to end but lately i've gotten stuck on that last bit the fact that the universe is dying. I know this may come as a shock. I mean it's the universe it's everything it's supposed to be eternal right but it isn't. We know the universe had a beginning and everything that begins and the start of the story is familiar one. In the beginning there was light. We know that because we can see it. Directly the cosmos today is filled with low energy background radiation leftover from a time when the whole universe was an all encompassing inferno in its first three hundred and eighty thousand years space or dark. it was thick. With a churning humming plasma it was hot and dense it was loud but it was also expanding over time the fire dissipated and space cooled clouds of gas pulled together by their own gravity form stars and galaxies and planets and us and one day astronomers using a microwave receiver detected a bit of static coming from every direction the sky the leftover radiation from that promote. He'll fire we can know map out the cosmos to the farthest reaches of the observable universe. We can see distant galaxies whose light has taken billions of years to reach us so by looking at them. We're looking deep into the past. We can watch how the expansion of the universe has slowed down since that hot early phase. Thirteen point eight billion years ago we can see collisions of entire galaxies. And watch the star formation the result from the sudden conflagration of all that cosmic hydrogen and we can see that these collisions are happening. Less and less. The expansion of the universe isn't slowing down anymore. A few billion years ago. It started speeding up. Distant galaxies are getting farther apart faster and faster star formation has slowed in fact we can calculate exactly how much and when we do we find something shocking of all the stars that have ever been born or that ever will be around ninety percent have already come into being from now until the end of time the universes were he'll just that last ten percent the end of the universe is coming. There are few ways that could happen but the most likely is called the heat death and in agonizing slow languishing of the cosmos stars. Burn out leaves smoldering ash. Galaxies become increasingly isolated in their own dimples of light particles decay even black holes evaporate into the void. Of course we still have some time. The heat is so far in the future. We hardly have words to describe it long. Past a billion years when the sun expands and boils off the oceans of the earth long past one hundred billion years we lose the ability to see distant galaxies and that faint trace of big bang light long after we are left alone in the darkness watching the milky way. Fade it's okay to be sad about it even if it is trillions of years in the future. No one wants to think about something. They love coming to an end as disconnected as it may be us here now. It is somehow more profound than personal death. We have strategies for accepting the ability of that. After all we tell ourselves something of us will live on. Maybe it will be our great works. Maybe it will be our children carrying on our genetic material or perhaps our basic outlook on life. Maybe it will be some idea worth spreading humanity might venture out into the stars and evolve and change but something of us will survive but the universe ends at some point. We have no legacy. There will come a time when in a very real sense our existence will not have mattered. The slate will be wiped clean completely. Why should we spend our lives seeking answers to the ultimate question of reality. If eventually there will be no one left to tell. Why build a sandcastle when you can see that the tide is coming in. I've asked a dozen other cosmologists. And they all had different answers to some. The death of the cosmos seems right. It's freeing to know that we are temporary. I very much like our glibness one told me to others. The question itself motivates the search for some alternative theory. There must be some way to carry on the slow fade to black. Just cannot be our story ends. One found comfort in the possibility of the multi vers. It's not all about us. He said personally. I feel lucky our cosmos existed for billions of years before us and it will carry on long after. We are gone

"Yeah well i like you. I think I am impressed with what they've done. I'm not sure where the holes are because they've got so deep down the stack that i'm not sure mere mortals would know where they are but i'm sure there are still areas. They're pushing on. And i look forward to seeing future updates and encino. They can continue to walk the line but overall i think they've done a great job of the convenience or a security question in a lot of these changes have happened without most users even being aware that they exist. That's right and that's the way it should be right. I shouldn't have to think about when i get in my car like. Oh how does the traction until work. How does the airbag work. I just want to know that they're going to work or not. Need them and your computer should be the same way. Now you talked about the dialogues. Like the catalina dialogues being an area of concern for you. You know you overwhelmed the user. Are there any other areas as you see here today that you're particularly concerned about with mac security. I mean i think apple is doing more work and things like safari to keep your data safe. Private is a very blurry. Line between security and privacy. The way apple talks about it. But i think like what you're using chrome or firefox like the web is a huge vector and apple's a lot in safari but i felt get some other users may be being left out a little bit because apple's doing that and the browser level and not the system level but again like They're doing a pretty good job as a fiery insofar as pretty good so there definitely moving the ball forward and browsers just not. Everyone's browser i think. Also they did a really good job of the last few years of trying to lockdown email security. But it's the same problem you have to use their email app to get that. Sure all right well you know what gain a think. Hopefully you know a little bit. More about mac security now. "The big thing is if something goes wrong with t. Two or bridge less which can happen. Because bridge s itself gets updated all the time with regular mac os updates and on occasion. Those things can go wrong and Apple then basically let you either revive restore your mac. You need another mac usb c cable. You need apple configuration. Her on another mac. And there's some documents that walk you through how to do this. I had to do it only once and it was probably my fault. I was like goofing around with like early. Version of the big sur beta and tried to go back and like it all went sideways. Yeah most people everyday life are not going into this. But it's good to know that if you have issues where amac's not going to boot and you can't get into recovery mode and clearly. Something is just really messed up. This is available to you or to your service agent. You know if you go to the genius bar independent shop so but really i think for the vast majority uses the vast majority of the time. This doesn't get in the way. It makes your mac more secure in a way that you don't really notice now we're gonna talk in a little while about how some people in the enterprise feel about this or who maybe need to run a bunch of macs. Maybe some of this stuff is a headache but for the individual user or the small business. None of this absolutely going to get your way. Yeah does this. I know like for instance. There are some articles. I've been reading about apple. Silicon and like the nuke and pave processes changed. Because of all. This stuff is that is that minor. Is that correct yet. It's a little bit different and at least the time we were recording this in early january twenty twenty one some of it's actually a little bit broken on apple side but it is basically more or less the same because you sell recovery mode you get into a different way but once you're in recovery mode you have the same sorts of tools available to you. The big difference is that this is not a separate t to chip is built into the apple. Silicon chip again again. The sort people have asked you to time. Don't even know that. But i think it's super interesting that is built in and one thing they've added to all of this is that system record. Protection is running. All the time is any continuously even though the system is on a read only volume even though that system is cryptography signed and checked by apple it is now checked continuously during startup. So if you install an application you try to do something somehow and you run afoul of these rules. Then the mac knows about immediately and can and will prompt to address it. And so it's always got your back instead. Of just at startup will be clear on intel. It wouldn't find the problem until the next time you turn your computer on. How often do you re computer. I mean seriously. Like i very rarely reboot machines. I think most people don't very often this episode of the power users is brought to you by indeed go to indeed dot com slash. "Are thanks to fresh books for support the show all right? Let's go from hardware to software in particularly the operating system Mac. Os Unlike IPAD OS. That's a year-old Mac. Os is a little older. It is Mac. Os Ten first. Public release was nineteen years ago. It's a lot of change. Of course a lot has changed but the bones are still the same right. You still use it the same way. They still the dock and the finder in the menu bar. I think for the most part if you sat somebody down in front of almost any version of Mac. Os Ten or MAC OS. They would be able to figure it out I. I wouldn't even argue if you took someone that went back on that original one. Twenty eight K. Mac they would be able to generally get around on the modern version made a lot of the paradigm are the same it is. It's amazing even from the classic Mac. Os Ten. How much shorter. Stay the same in Mac Os. Tin Really was a complete reboot. Right it was a different operating system. And they brought over a compatibility with some some old stuff but for a long time every year every version of macos. Ten wasn't every year the beginning every couple of years. It was like a big deal right like they added things like. Oh now we have a calendar application now. We have a browser. Now WE HAVE WINDOWS FILE SERVER. Stuff it really. They started very small. Th Th the thing. I was really struck by when I did. Those screen shots of the various macos. Inversions was how small like how there wasn't that much to the early versions. And you look at it now. It's it's obviously much more complex. But for long time they were just slowly building. Their house brick by brick. Yeah I I was the other day I had my tiger. I saw my tiger t shirt guy. Yeah getting in line you know tonight it released Hamas those days but I feel like for the longest time each year or two years they would release a new version and what they were dealing with was building a top and existing foundation like they would figure something out and the release. It came a few years ago. Didn't change that but added a new feature somewhere else in the operating system. Spotlight would be the exception. I feel like spotlight made continual improvements over many years but many of the features like okay. We've finished that now. We're going to tackle this other problem on our board and the thing you could rely upon as a user was the stuff that they fixed. The last time was going to stay fixed. You know For many years I felt like a a new software. Update might mean that I have something. That's a little buggy with respect to new features but the old features are going to continue to work and maybe I'm looking at it through rose colored glasses but I feel like a problem. They have now is that that's not necessarily true. I feel like things that work in one version of the operating system may break in the next version and granted. Much trying to be an apologist but I do understand that now. They're trying to work on multiple operating systems and make things talk to each other and now there's just a lot more moving pieces so it's easier to break existing things by adding new things. But that is I. Think a weakness in the operation of this point is you. Don't have that security in mind that everything's GonNa continue to work that worked before. Yeah I think that's true and it is easy to look back on old versions in. I remember when macos ten leopard came out if you were running like Servers Norton. Antivirus your machinist. When it boot any more right like they've been issues but I think the underlying thing which are getting to is that it is just so much more complex now the MAC. Os has to get along with its Iowa's and IPAD OS COUSINS. That cloud is basically got it soaks in tons of different parts. Yeah I mean it's all over the place and Mac Os and in some places. It feels like the old way of doing things in the new way of doing things or sort of in conflict. One of my least examples of this is in mail where you have in males preferences you have an account section but then also in system preferences you have a a web or online accounts section and. It's not immediately clear what you can do in each one. As why are these things in two different places like if you want them in a centralized location like it is an eye us? Get rid of this pain male. But they haven't I don't know why and it's just some of those things just feel like this. This there used to be one way to do things and now there's more than one way to do things and everything hasn't made the shift yet. Yeah I I think I'm male. I mean the things I heard kind of from from folks when used to go to W. W. C. Was that they done a lot of work under the hood and not so much. Easer facing work and probably. That's just on the list but I I do agree that it's just like You don't you just don't have the guarantee that I used to feel regressions or more common. And maybe that's just part of the price of admission in a world where you have all these cloud hooks in you have all these different platforms that needs to work with but I would like to see that. Get BETTER IMMI too. I think there's also maybe a cultural thing going on with Mac. Os where in the early days. Macos ten was you understood that it's user base. Pretty well right. There's a lot of students. It was a lot of artistic types and that was pretty much it because that was all apple pretty much had when macos since started but over. The years has grown MAC. Os has grown into a much more. Broadly used operating system and as that has taken place. Apple's had to add features. And now you have things in both first party applications that you didn't have before. I remember being a big deal and they added I cal- The calendar application. It's like Oh is part of the operating system is not. It's hard to tell and now the OS comes with so many things because people just expect that when they unblocks their first Mac book air for the first time and that has led led to a lot of complexity. And I think that there are. This is speculation. Just feeling on my part. So like don't read into this more than just that. It's my feeling is that I have the feeling that there are a lot of people at Apple working on Mac. Os projects that aren't that don't have the history of the Mac. Sorta flowing through their veins. Like maybe David Ervine I do and as that happens which is naturally the higher a lot of young talent. It's totally natural. But as that's happened what the M- what it means to be a good map or what it means to be a good MAC feature has slipped a little bit and look. I still believe Mac. Os is the best computing platform on the planet. I like that look. Maybe I'll switch to that like. I want to run MAC. Os as long. You know as long as they make it but it doesn't mean that it hasn't changed and some of those changes are bad but at the same time I think some of the changes are good. I think features that they've added over. Time have made the MAC a better place right. Things like notes for instance like a really good way to sync data between all my devices with the clouds. There's lots of good things that have added but it seems to come to the expensive stability ever at least every couple of releases. Yeah agreed and I think that setting aside stability. Let's assume they they fix that problem and I do believe they're working on it But you know what are other things that it could improve upon One for me is window management and And others comes up on the MPU podcast quite often but just the Bilton window. Management tools are are pretty bad Yeah yeah the APPS and Keyboard Maestro you can work around them which is one of the Nice things about the Mac but the But just the I thought well. I'll try again apple's because I don't have the extra monitors said well try and set up some additional screens and it's it's like handcuffing yourself when you use the built in system. It just doesn't even make sense. It takes extra mouse clicks. It's not as fluid. I mean there's really almost no reason to use it because it's only half done. I mean I feel like there. There's a bunch of work to be done on this operating system still. Yeah I mean just look at how mission control has changed over the years they've taken away and added and tweaked. Now you have split-screen APPs the last couple of years like they make very little sense in some context and yeah they're trying to add a lot of things to the interface. That aren't the haven't been there the whole time and some of them have worked better than others. I'm when they added spaces in Leopard Snow Leopard and thinking like Oh that's really cool but it wasn't for me but it for a while it was like a you have expose and you have spaces and the mission control kind of brought it all under one roof. And they've changed out a lot and yeah. Some of those features could be a lot better. But what is cool about MAC? Os is you mentioned. Move and and other applications where you can. Kinda do what you want in terms of things like window management and. There's no way that's going to happen on an IPAD right. That is a thing that is very specific to the MAC and one reason. I love the Mac because I can't tweak it in tune it to make it do what I wanted to do. So Catalina Yeah. Is it as bad as everybody says it is? I have many complicated thoughts. I think I think it is easy to to look at the death of thirty two bit. Apps and sort of how rough some of the catalyst APPs have been and say oh we're catalina is not a good update because of these things broke a lot of my workflows or the new catalyst. Apps aren't as good and those are fair and right assessments and I agree with those assessments. But if we take them off the table for a second we just look at. Catalina is an operating system and take away some of the other things that with it. I don't think it's any worse than the last couple of versions. I think at the OS level. I haven't had the USB audio issues that. I had sort of in the early mojave days. I haven't had some of the the weirdest stuff I had with high Sierra and the APS or the S for a transition so thank the OS itself is fine but.

"So there are things out there that we haven't read yet, but in looking at the specs, the baseline MAC pro GPA is not as good as the GP you in my MAC pro, and I do a fair amount of four K video rendering does happen on the GP. So I'm afraid that to spec, the MAC probe where I would need it, it would just be way out of reach financially, I would like to own one, but I don't I can't say sitting here today that's going to be under my desk at the end of the year. I'm sure it would improve things, but it would be expensive. Yeah, I have no interest in it. I the MAC pro was there's a good argument. Made I didn't need the I MAC pro but VM, but just looking at the high end uses of the stuff I do have to say that every keeps using this term pro user, I feel like there's a lot of pro users that don't need and I- MAC pro. Oh, yeah. That's very that's already brewing, MAC pro. I guess, but the but at the same time I really appreciate that apple has definitely planted its flag and said, no, we are still here for pro users and the people who make some of the, the biggest and stuff can do it on a MAC. Absolutely. And also the MAC pro I've been so happy with that, I know you have to with yours. It's it really fits my needs really well, so I'm going to long and hard at it, but I would say that, it's, it's not extremely certain that, that I'll do that. And part of that is gears a little bit part of that is the display. I like John Syracuse so would want the whole package and that display is, is beyond what I what I need to do. Because again, if you think about who apples building this for if you're talking about, like video production, work chain stuff, where you're spending that money that reference monitor I don't have those needs that monitor is extreme overkill. For me. I do wish that they had something more, forcible, that didn't have all this features, but they don't do every day and, and that is plays not in my future. Maybe like thirty years when I can pick one up for the collection until then there's not going to be that display on my desk. And that does make me wonder what I would hope the MAC pro up to there's lots of good options out there. But you know, could I live as MAC power? Co host with ace monitor like. I sleep at night, knowing that's in my studio waiting for me every morning. I when I was walking around the, the MAC pro demo Paul they had these monitors on every station, and they look like my monitor to me, they didn't look that different. And I was having trouble computing wise this, so expensive and let me just say, I'm not a monitor guy, I don't keep up with this stuff, and then as I said, in the interview with Doug when I got to the photo station and I saw, you know, used appropriately and I had a live sample next to have my, my monitors never close to look that good. But I feel like apple has kind of their victim of their own success. Because the monitors in the I Mak are amazing like I bought a second monitor to put on the side of my MAC, right? I bought four of them, and I shipped Amazon, I just kept shipping them back because I couldn't get one that was even close. And Finally, I said, well, this is the best of a bunch of junk, that's the one ended up using. Yeah. And so, so I think for a lot of us, it's like, well, we can't buy. An I MAC looking monitor. There's you can't go to Dell and get one of those in that panel is so good..

"There's one less thing. I I will mention while we're talking about this remote connection. If your MAC mini is headless that would mean, it's not hooked up to a display MAC OS will set the default resolution pretty low, and so when you remote into it, it may be sort of difficult to get around. And so there's a little HDMI adapter. Our friends at MAC stadium came up with this and found it, and it's basically just a little it's just a little dog'll that plugs into the HD my port, and it basically tricks the MAC mini into going into. To ten eighty p. So when you log into it remotely, the resolutions, a little more usable. So I use this on our headless MAC mini that we have with relay and it works. Great. I can connect with screens and everything it's a nineteen twenty eighty a really usable size, and it's like nine dollars on Amazon is pretty pretty hard. It's just it's just a little plug, and it's like a half dollar Idi bitty. So if you if you run into that where you're remolding in and the resolution is not where you want it to be then this may solve that problem for you. It's called the compu- lab display emulator at that. That's just a cool name as a great name. I think I just need to get one. Just for just for the name. This episode of the MAC power is brought to you by saying box. We all have Email. We all have too much Email, and it can be difficult to set up the filtering or the rules that we were talking about to make it manageable. As we're saying box comes insane box is really smart. And it learns what Email is important to you..

"And then put it on arm, and that was cool. And you kinda can't do that now. But with the I MAC pro you can it is a little bit of a strange decision. I think the feedback they got from pro customers was that, you know, these kinds of systems often get mounted on a wall or on an. Arm and they wanted that versatility rather than having it be like either one or the other. And once you get it. You're stuck with it. Yeah. And before we move on because both the I MAC pro in the I MAC are a little long in the tooth. If someone's listening in thinking about getting a new one any advice. You know, I I'm sure there will be an I MAC update, I'm MAC pro update at some point. I'm I think more likely the IMAX will get updated in the next six months. The MAC pro might think Intel is working on a news EON processor that might be good in this. But it would not surprise me. If this has a long upgrade cycle where it might be another year. Plus before we see something. I mean, I hope not, but it could happen. It's it's it's still to this day. I mean, it's an incredibly powerful MAC. It's basically the most powerful MAC you can get. And if you want that kind of power, go out and get it, obviously in two thousand nineteen the the new MAC pro will come and that will have its own. You know, it will it will take that crown. Right. And that so if you can wait you can find out what the the MAC pro has to offer. And then also there's the new MAC mini, which is depending on your needs can be specked up to be a pretty powerful system. It's. Own self. And even if you graphics, you could stick an e P you on it. So there's lots of things you can do with that. So the it's more complicated now than it was a year ago when this was very clearly the MAC to buy if you wanna powerful MAC, but I do love it and for a certain audience who doesn't really care about the needing a modular MAC pro with an external monitor or anything like that. It is is pretty great. I love it. I have no regrets at year later, and I do suspect that macro is going to be a lot more expensive than the gonna be a five K, MAC pro. And for people who are looking to to buy out there, where do you think they get the most bang for their buck now where where should you spend your dollars? If you're going to be configuring your machine is it on ram on updated processor is it on a bigger hard drive. I mean, I know depends. But if you're your dollars are limited and you've got to put them somewhere. Well, I mean, it does depend I feel like ram is probably the best place to start. If only because it's a lot easier to do outboard storage like buying an external SSD is it's not cheap, but it's not super expensive. And it's also pretty easy. You could even Phil Crowe it to the back of your I MAC, for example. Right. Like, you can get out outboard storage pretty easily or if you've got network attached storage. There are lots of ways to go. I don't think you necessarily need multi terabyte SSD inside depending on what you're doing. But I think that ram it's harder to to update that although on the on the I MAC it's easy to. Update that so you can models that after the fact on the pro I should say, and yeah, the twenty seven inch five K, I MAC as well. There's a little door that you can get access to that's got the ram modules in it. So so, you know, I think in most cases the processor updates are not the best deal. But on some of the MAC mini models. I think the processor updates can be very good because the base model is an I three, and although it's pretty fast. It's an I three and you can get up to an I seven for that. And likewise on the on the I MAC pro depending on the workload you're doing. I have I have several friends who have the ten core model and Phil they felt like that was the best kind of price performance option for them. And so I can see it there too..

"Big thing in the gaming space and of course steam as we mentioned earlier is awesome but as the as david mentioned and as the apple insider points out it's pretty shallow when it comes to mac titles and i've gone in there i have to admit to look for things i bought fire watch which is a great game for the mac through steam but you go in there and you see all these great titles and you start shopping around and you realize that a very small percentage of them are actually available to play on the mac and steam link which is this thing that will be great once it gets approved on the app store it will only still only run mac based game swit steam link does is it allows you to use your device or your apple tv to play a game over the net work that actually uses the processors in the gp on your mac and then just kind of almost an airplay style thing puts it up on your apple tv and allows you to say like a bluetooth controller that actually interact with and play with the game on the apple tv so it's kind of like having a consul in your house but the processor is actually your computer and they were steam was rejected i think last week the app was rejected because it had in purchase and it was violating the app store rules for an app purchases so apple's been working with steam they've resubmitted without that functionality in there a note saying that purchases of games are need to be made on a mac or pc and it probably will be approved soon maybe by the time you hear this episode so that is another option but you know everything is still kind of a little bit and this is sort of what the apple cider is pointing out is still this little janke kind of work around especially on the mac so you know mac gaming it's never been a big thing it's gotten better it's now maybe influx it sounds like it's a little bit still kind of tough for for hardcore gamers out there so i'm still curious to get a lot more your feedback on this that's why i'm continuing the conversation this episode so if you have something to say send me an email mac cast at g mail dot com another thing that came up this week somewhat i think semi related to this is.

"The great features and i said it didn't have a mac version you think even alluded that maybe with the new features of of ios porting that we saw at worldwide developer conference that maybe they would put it to mac we'll guess what it's already on mac i should have searched the mac apps or i didn't i went to the developer's website and and in my own defense if you go to the website it's not really obvious that they have a mac version if you scroll all the way down to the bottom you do see a mac with a screen shot and down in the lower right hand corner there is the mac apps store button but prominently at the top of the website is the irs at but so it's the same price for the mac version is as it is for the ios version nine ninety nine us but you can get notably for your mac and many of you wrote into tell me how much love notably on the back so it's got a great endorsement from the mac community so if you're looking for note taking app and you're evaluating different ones that is one to look into and thanks to everybody who wrote in to make sure that i didn't miss that i really do appreciate it another thing i talked about on the last episode of the mac cast was the fact that i have come around and resolve myself to what in days passed i called the new apple order the fact that more and more apps are going to be moving to the subscription model as a way to gain recurring revenue and kind of deal with the fact especially in iowa that they don't have the ability to sell app upgrades discounted upgrades to customers and i said you know i actually kinda like it especially when it turns out what i might spend in a given year is the same amount that i would normally spend on that app when i buy it outright and then because i typically if it's an app that i love and i really use new version comes out there's not even any hesitation i'm just always buying it anyway so i'm paying that upgrade price so you know the ability to give the developer money every month no that they've got a more sustainable stable revenue coming in and they can roll out new features whenever they want i think there is some advantages to the subscription model and i asked for your opinion on it and jill wrote in to share some of her thoughts on specifically why she's not a big fan of apps christians and as she points out what happens when i can't afford the subscription anymore right if you don't pay.

"I hear title games getting ported to the mac again not anything that i think we're not all that used to even with these technologies like open jail and open sale just because of the size of the mac gaming market it's not something that a lot of companies in developers really target we get a lot more stuff on irs because it's a larger platform but certainly on the desktop on the mac we've dealt with these things for a long time but there is some concern in the community that apple forcing developers onto metal is going to push things back in the other direction because we have seen some growth in recent years right it's gotten better for mac gaming and the concern is by deprecating these api's or deprecating support for open jail and open seal that we might be taking a step back so a lot of that was being talked about in the community this week i am not huge gamer so this doesn't impact me all that much so my general feeling on it is that you know games that run on metal in metal to perform much better on a mac i think the experiences are much better on a mac and again because apple hasn't been actively supporting the latest versions of open jail i don't see this as as big an issue as the community may be making it out to be but i'd love to hear from some of you who are gamers specific gamers who game on the mac how do you feel about this because we did just get to the point where we have you know external gpa support and that should be huge for gaming but if you can't get the titles you want because the developers don't wanna build for metal or metal to i guess that's a pretty big deal that could be pretty disappointing i have a feeling though we're still going to get those top tier games we're gonna get the big titles that most people want and it's more of the indie stuff and i like a lot of the indie stuff don't get me wrong but i think a lot of the india any stuff ends up showing up on us just because of the potential marketplace so i think there's kind of balanced there but i could be totally wrong on this stuff shoot me some feedback send me an email.

"To do but just as the plain old mac user every aspect of the magazine bring system it's like should be up for grabs for you know potential improvement until recently i talked a lot about window management uh there are plenty of things you can do related to window management that could be good ideas like in the beginning of the mac we saw other macro we saw a lot about these classic macro has had its way of doing things amac was ten km walk it had a bunch of new ideas it had the duck which was a things not existing classic mac us and the dock evolved over time expose which is things did not exist in classic mac loss for way to manage windows it adopted spaces which is an idea from many previous systems of like virtual desktops as of and it refined that idea dashboard another idea of how you could have things that are kinda like the successor's but not really like in the early days of mac os time they tried all sorts of new and interesting things there's no reason you have to stop doing that is not as if our we've tried those things and now that's at everything is done every one of those things before a long you could have said well you don't need any the us you've got everything but this you know that there's always new things to try new things experiment with the most of those are not like oh you need a new colonel or something like that their user land features right or even just the applications different kinds of applications different miles for applicant has before the ileife applications came back mac apps didn't look like that there was a new idea how to make a good mac up all make it one window and make it simple and you know whether you like it or not it was an interesting new idea of how to write america versus the old world multiple in those in power and stuff like that that kind of change has slowed to a trickle in the mac and has nothing to do with the mac being like that like there's nothing more to do so the end of history illusion like now we're done no is just states stopped putting time and money into which again may be appropriate given their prospects of their other platforms.
