"Hey, what's up? It's Gustav Ariana. You're listening to the times. Essentially, from the LA times. It's Thursday, August 25th, 2022. It's Emmy season, and for the next couple of weeks, like we have been doing for the last couple of weeks, we're featuring interviews with nominees from our sister podcast the envelope. Today we're sharing a conversation with Coleman Domingo, who just got his first Emmy nomination for playing Ali in the HBO series euphoria. I loved the first season. Ali is such a great character and anything's Zendaya does is usually awesome. The second season, yeah, it was kind of extra, but I still liked it. I can't wait for the next one though. And you might also know Domingo from Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, fear The Walking Dead, or Zola, or from his long career in the theater as a performer, director and writer. He joins envelopes Mark Olson to delve into his personal inspiration for his euphoria character. Plus, he chats about the relationship between a Lee and rue, played by Zendaya, reflects on the nature of redemption and forgiveness and describes the time he almost walked away from his acting

"Is just fantastic in this role. 6 months we gone working yeah it also features Monique, who is playing ma Rainey, another legendary blue singer who was sort of a mentor for a bit to the Bessie Smith until she became very jealous of Bessie Smith and it also has the late great Michael K Williams playing Bessie Smith's sort of volatile lover and husband. And what I love about this film is that it doesn't shy away from the more perhaps unsavory parts of her life. And it doesn't fall into all of these very heavy handed cliches. And we also get to see a black woman who in the 1920s was living a life very openly as a queer woman. And I think it's just such a really fun film that I think a lot of people have forgotten about. But it does a really good job of avoiding a lot of the elves cliches that we see in a lot of biopics. And the performances are just fantastic. So I really think people should seek that out if they haven't seen it yet. And tell me what you mean by Elvis E cliches. You know, I guess when I say LC cliches, I think of the sort of rise and fall. We know what's going to happen here. And I think part of the problem with Elvis, like you said, the marvel of everything, we know so much about Elvis or even if you're not a huge fan of a younger person, like you know the vague things about it. Whereas Bessie Smith is a, we haven't seen many biopics about black women to begin with. And so already that puts it at a advantage, I think, of being different from other biopics. And the fact that she's not perhaps as well known as Elvis helps. So you get to learn more about this woman who a lot of people have forgotten about or may not remember. Whereas Elvis, it's like, yes, of course we're going to hear hound on, of course, we're going to hear all of these things. And I really think that bessie kind of sidesteps that in part because the subject is less well known. You've been listening to it's been a minute from NPR. I'm Anna sale talking with Aisha Harris about what makes a good or not so good biopic. Can I tell you one that I really love, even though it does follow the kind of behind the music narrative arc that you're skeptical of? Do you know the movie superstar? Yes, I actually haven't seen it, but I'm very familiar with it. Yes. Well, what I love about this movie, it's the Karen Carpenter story, a an experimental film that Todd Haynes made back in 1988. And it stars not live action. People or cartoons, it is modified Barbie dolls acting out all of the scenes and moments of Karen Carpenter's life. And Karen Carpenter, of course, died of anorexia. After struggling with anorexia nervosa, also, I just, her music, her voice, I could listen to all the time. But this is one of those movies that they didn't get the proper licensing. So it's not something that you can easily download and pay for. It's one you have to find a copy of, but what I love about that is it is a very familiar. I knew the story of Karen Carpenter. I knew her music. But I did feel like this film was showing me the story in a new way, also by making me think about body representations by having Barbie dolls acted all out. I really think this guy of yours is the problem. I mean, Karen. You look really thin. I like the way I look. Karen, you starve yourself. All you ever eat is salad and eyes tea. I really don't know why you're making such a big deal out of

"Sure. Let's start with best makeup and hair styling. You mentioned Chastain will be have a button or seat to view whether or not her team from the eyes of Tammy Faye gets a win. Do you think they will get a win? This is actually really tricky one. It's been like when you look at precursor awards for this, it's been kind of all over the map and coming to America, which is nominated in this category, picked up some wins elsewhere, Cruella has been picking up some wins. I still think it has to be eyes of Tammy Faye. And I think Chastain's FrontRunner status is the best actress category. We need to talk about how that happened. But that is only the fact that her performance is so aided by this extremely dramatic makeup job on her film. I think really puts us at the front. And I think a good recent example of that is ma Rainey, like ma Rainey winning the makeup category when violet's performance was much discussed that season. I think it really boosted a film that otherwise didn't get a ton of love elsewhere. So I think Jessica Chastain may have won her makeup team. This Oscar also they're a great work in the film. What do you think? I think you're right. I think we've actually seen on social media, the work that that team did, as opposed to some other films where maybe we don't see it as clearly something like dune, we haven't seen necessarily exactly how they came to do some of that makeup and hair styling for, say, Javier Bardem's character. That's a character that probably had a significant amount of makeup and hair styling. I will say it's not my favorite the eyes of Tammy Faye. I actually think my favorite in this category is Cruella. That's the one that I probably would want to cite. I feel like what they've done with Emma Stone is they've literally turned her into a cartoon character. It's kind of a remarkable transformation that they give her among other characters in that film. And Cruella is hotly tabbed in another category here, but it hasn't really picked up steam for this one, really. For me, so will win it my will win feels like Tammy Faye, but my should win, I kind of feel like I also Gucci. As much as I've been recently railing against prosthetic dependent performances of svelte hot actors like Jared Leto, I think that he is unrecognizable in that film and it's a prosthetic that you can't see the seams on. As opposed to say the prosthetic that they do on stone SARS guard in dune, which I think is sort of like the source of dunes major contention in this category is the baron harkonnen, but that just looks more grotesque. I think it's harder to do, I just made this person look like another human. I mean, I think The Batman is possibly a lock for next year for what they did to call in feral. So I think I would, I would put Gucci here, but I think I still think it's going to be Tammy Faye, so. Okay, next category, speaking of dune. Best visual effects. Now this is where we get into the dune dominance below the line, I think..

Throughout her life, there's also evidence that Ethel was sexually fluid. She had relationships with both men and women, including a profound relationship with her fellow performer, Ethel Williams. Ethel belonged to a vibrant queer community of blues singers in the 1920s, including folks like Gladys Bentley, Bessie Smith, and ma Rainey. Near the end of her life, ethylene into religion, and often appeared with evangelist Billy Graham. She even sang at worship service at The White House in 1971. Ethel died on September.

"Hi Friends, I'm Alison Russell. I'm a Grammy nominated singer songwriter, poet and activist. All month, I'll be your guest host for where Monica, as we explore the contributions of black women in music. Today's musician was known as the mother of the blues. With her full deep throated voice and lyrics that celebrated the liberation of black women. This musician was a pioneer in her field and influenced the genre of blues for generations to come. Let's talk about ma Rainey. Ma Rainey was born, Gertrude pridget in Columbus, Georgia, in 1886. Although some sources say she may have been born in Alabama in 1882. Gertrude's parents were minstrel performers. Gertrude herself first performed when she was 14 years old in a local talent show. In a piece called a bunch of BlackBerries. Soon afterwards, Gertrude began a career traveling across the south and Midwest with a variety of minstrel shows and vaudeville performance troops. The shows were usually made up of a varied collection of short performances, skits, dance numbers, and songs. While on the road, Gertrude was introduced to southern country blues, and she started incorporating the musical style into her performances. In 1904, when she was 18, Gertrude married a fellow performer. William raney, or paw rainy. They formed a double act, going by ma and pa raining. Together, they toured with many famous groups for over a decade. Then, in 1916, the couple separated. Ma started her own show. Madam Gertrude ma Rainey, and her George a smart set. Parts of the show were traditionally vaudeville. It included jazz numbers by her band, a chorus girl performance, and comedy routines. But then, ma Rainey would sing. Her music was inspired by authentic black southern blues. She became known for her full, strong voice, her moaning style of singing, and the content of her lyrics. Her songs were honest depictions of black female life. Ma, who was openly bisexual, sang about women who were attracted to women and men. She sang about women who were defiant and independent, even in the midst of sadness or heartbreak. Women who were sometimes vengeful and violent. Angela Davis wrote that the women in MaaS songs explicitly celebrate their right to conduct themselves as expansively and even as undesirably as men. On stage, malware flashy clothing and bright jewelry. Sometimes even a necklace made out of real $20 bills. When she opened her mouth to sing, audiences would see the gold and her teeth sparkling. Her show was a huge success. Popular among black and white audiences. In 1923, moss signed a recording contract with Paramount records. In the span of 5 years, she recorded nearly 100 songs, making her one of the earliest recorded blues musicians. She also was a mentor to many young musicians, like the legendary blues singer, Bessie Smith, who occasionally toured with ma, and was also rumored to be her romantic pardon. But by the late 1920s, ma's popularity had begun to wane. Paramount dropped her from their label. In the 1930s, Paramount went bankrupt and stopped all production of her records. In 1935, ma returned to Columbus Georgia to live with her brother. She used her earnings to start two seaters in the city. Four years later, on December 22nd, 1939, she died at age 53 of heart failure. Today, ma Rainey's story is still being remembered. In 2004, the Library of Congress added her 1924 recording of CC rider blues, which featured a young Louis Armstrong on the trumpet to their national recording registry. And she was the inspiration behind August Wilson's 1982 play. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and the 2021 Netflix film of the same name. All month long were highlighting black musicians. We Monica is a wonder media network production, special thanks to co creators Jenny and Liz Kaplan, who invited me to guest host this month. Top T tomorrow..

Golden Globes 2021: Complete list of nominees

"Let's start off with the major categories. First of all, for best picture. For the Golden Globes. They break it down. Best picture drama and best picture, music or comedy. So let's start off with best picture drama in which the nominees are Nomad Land. This is the amazing movie with Frances McDormand. Who, you know, play. Somebody who's her life is sort of falling apart and she gets in a van and hits the road and lives in RV camps and recreational areas taking on you know little seasonal jobs along the way. It zest a very sweet and very thoughtful, touching movie. I think this is going to be the big winner for tonight. You know People love Frances McDormand. I think that this is gonna have a lot of Lot of success at the Golden Globes tonight. It will be up against the trial of the Chicago Seven, which, if Nomad land doesn't win trial of the Chicago Seven is going to win. This is the Aaron Sorkin. The written and directed production about the famous Chicago seven trial that took place in Chicago 50 years ago. The Carrie Mulligan movie promising young woman Is a revenge thriller, also an outstanding films nominated for tonight and also the Anthony Hopkins movie called The Father. Those air. Your nominees were best Drama for performances in the dramatic category. For actresses. The nominees are Violet Davis on Drew a day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carrie Mulligan. For best actors in the drama. The nominees are Riz Um, Ed Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins. I think the winners are going to be Frances McDormand and I just I don't know how Chadwick Boseman Doesn't win. He's amazing in the movie Ma Rainey's black bottom. But you know the fact that he passed away the young age and nobody knew that he was fighting cancer. I think that probably is going toe play into the Planted the decision making also for best movie, musical or comedy. The nominees are Boer at subsequent movie film Hamilton. When they put together a television version of Hamilton in the put it on Disney. Plus, this got nominated. The motion picture called Music was nominated, as was the comedy with Andy Sandberg, Palm Springs. And the Ryan Murphy directed production. The prom. Which has Meryl Streep and has just AH, whole variety of very talented actors. That's also nominated for best picture as well. I kind of have a feeling that Borat is going to want to ping the winner tonight in the musical or comedy category. For best actress in a motion picture Maria Buckler Cova, who is placed Borat's daughter in Borat. Subsequent movie film Kate Hudson from music. And, uh, Anya Taylor, Joy dominated for the movie called Emma for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen is nominated James Corden from the prom Lin Manuel Miranda from Hamilton Dev Patel for the personal history of David Copperfield and Andy Sandberg. For Palm Springs again. I think it's going to be a kind of in a reverend pick, but I think Sasha Baron Cohen could wind up being the winner. Now. The Golden Globes also give out

"78th annual Golden Globe Awards were the nominees were announced yesterday. For the show That's airing on the 28th of this month with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co hosting for the fourth time. I didn't notice this yesterday, but There were some snubs. Always snubs. There were some snap it up, Dubs Love is dead to me was shut out. Completely. I wasn't surprised by that. I get So I wasn't surprised because I remember. I feel like you guys weren't loving it. I feel like I liked the second season more. Then most people did. But eh, so I'm not. I'm not surprised because I didn't feel like it had the same critical acclaim that season. One did when it felt very unexpected, But I guess I would be surprised just because you think of the total Number of releases this year, which didn't seem like a ton. I don't know. I just feel like this Christina Applegate, especially and Linda Cardellini. They're just So good. There's like so much great. So many great performances out there. I get it if they were nominated in the first season, it's like, OK, we already did you let's move on to the next person Ma Rainey's black bottom, which I just watched last weekend. Did not get a best picture nomination. But Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis did get acting nods. I think that's accurate. Sure it was You know, I know it was. I believe it was a play, right? Yes, And it felt like you were watching a play. It felt very Like what? That's a weird thing to happen. But if you're watching a play, you kind of have a different suspension of disbelief. Sure, oftentimes than you do in the, you know a movie. So, but Violet Davis outstanding. Chadwick Boseman. They did a dedication to him. Also at the end of that movie, by the way,

"And they give you the world's logic and ways to work with it. And i find that kind of interesting surf your into saifi and that sorta stuff on time travel and things like that. This movie is a high recommendation for you. However i don't really give a shit about that stuff usually sir. It's not really a film for may so what's left. Me is just a romcom and while it does do some sort of unique things with the expectations of that. It's not enough to grab me as comedy is of great comedic saints. That really get to me so it's filmed slack again. It's it's not really my cup of tea. But i can acknowledge is really good and i do respect that. It's doing a of unique. It's very meta in the sense that it's doing unique things with common tropes of the genre and i really respect that serveral. I'm going to give it a seven. Which i think pretty fast score but i'm sure if i was more into like what i described earlier wonder woman the nerds shit falls more into that stuff. I would fuck in be through the roof from this. I'm sure next is american pickle which we saw in cinemas. Well i think this is. The sides wonder woman ethics the loss film we saw together Which knew together carmen nba. A now is so this. Think we sorta kinda american pickle lead the way. Yeah couple of great performances. From seth rogan a really put surprisingly crazy political commentary though wasn't expected Often hilarious and ultimately a really sweet movie about About appreciating family and appreciating. What you from and appreciating your heritage And being bit more open and accepting sir. Yeah i think this was a fantastic movie. And if you haven't seen it gut check it out. Probably in eight. Yeah look. I'm a diehard seth rogan fan. But it doesn't feel like a seth rogan film. Just kind in the same sense that palm springs. Really feel like andy sandberg project but this is probably one of my favorite comedies of the very hot felt at times well I really liked the turn. And the directing of this thanked to see like it's almost like it's a story story sort of like a fairytale. pretty funny lot of hot are elected. I'm going to give the eight eight given night. And it's double the reagan. So if you're big rogan fan. It's just fear next. Star is another netflix. moody project. Pallets starring who was jamie fox was justin gordon levitt. Yes yeah and machine gun. Kelly had a big pot into. Yeah anyway it's perfect power taking away. I didn't watch it. Oh fuck i keep thinking you sore leads movies. This is this is very unlike us usually more on the same page there. Okay project power. It's one of the more blockbuster films. I've seen as an exclusive netflix movie..

Hard fan of beastie. boys What i loved about. This is the format which i thought was really unique. It's it's not just a documentary. It's alive documentary. They it's like almost on a stand up. Set talking through a pre-recorded documentary. It's very unique very interesting. I would love to say more done in this format which opens the door for these fourth bowl breaks and stuff and bringing the director which was really cool throws also great how they really earned up to some of their mistakes like a moment where they talk about how these to be a goal. He played. I think drums for them. And they feel like they really let it down and they opened up amid that was kind of brave and yeah it does feel like a love letter to just based fans and the free pasta way. I'm almost going to go home this. I'm gonna get about. I but yeah. I really enjoyed this. It's one of the best things. I've seen on apple tv. Plus without a doubt Next stop was a direct to video. I imagine the be less studio interference. It's probably going to be a type of film but she wouldn't may. I'm trying to a of trying to like have look to see. Who's which studio is behind it. But cleopatra the sixty three movie with elizabeth taylor richard burton. Richard was huge media like in terms like budget. So i think the guy to need. I think they're gonna. I think it's also going to be a giant and bowl moving but at least it's tied into like it's soon it's not tied in to like you know toys sales in licensing rights and shit like the problem. I am not going to be honest. I find that really surprising like i. I know it's a good film. But i i remember i trump connecting to i in my sort of locked my second time around but more but yeah i i find that really surprising because when you think of pixar films it's not the first one that comes to mind charnel. You're my third. That is one of my. That is one of the first things that customers may not just in terms of the things to me like. It's it's beautifully made right like first half in areas basically a sonnet film But for me emotional. Impact will trump Kind of like technical novels you know like all the time which is why coco winston But yeah in second place we had tie between and toy story really surprised at toy story out toy story one three and four Three and i'm god i think too is my third favorite. I think the maid goes Three one two full. I think too is my least favorite toy story are going to say. I think it goes. If i'm gonna if i'm gonna if i have thoughts about something i'm going to put her facebook groups who help see how people respond so i posted my Top ten of twenty twenty and soul ended up damon of five so soul is fantastic. Saw soul is just honestly just the movie that twenty twenty really needed. Like it's just it's it's such a insightful. Deep and hot woman's story but at the same time it's It's it's a little bit tragic. It's a little bit you know. It's exactly what i want from pixar movie. you know. it's not this It's no 'cause riley caused does this thing where we're going to appeal to kids. We'll be loud bright and shiny. And whatever i'm like you know we're we're not going to try and do anything data when we're going to try and worked for more depth. I think i could argue that. I think 'cause is the only picks off franchise it's like that. In my opinion. I feel like that whole franchises dampened the reputation of pixar. Because when i think of pixar. I think of like what you're saying. Now these big emotional stories and describe yes and nar I mean. I think i think there's only really three movies that really go this deep inside out car and saul really kind of like on a different level. They can also they can earn. They can pretty much be on a trilogy like those three films especially they can be like a trilogy about like the The you know the the whole perspective of feeling like you know anything about anything in your mind Psychologically speaking all three movies Just so intense. Like in what they do and i was like i i didn't i didn't i didn't love it. I really wanted to love. It was initially a bit like Okay i'll go with it fine Seconds john sort. I kind of like really fell in love with it. I wanted to trent reznor and atticus ross. Did the skull fucking love that man because the music and this was really different like like i can't believe it was trent resona man like he really stepped out of his comfort zone. Like two different projects. I'd say mackey did the same right. Yeah if you'd like 'cause. I was watching that first time and i was like this feels very like century. Feels very like soc milwaukee. And i'm just like why does it feel social network and is it's so yeah fantastic. The animation is absolutely beautiful. It's stunning like does the same like kind of like in a hospital. Bed and mike. The cat is walking on the hospital bed and it looks like a real like blanket like that is walking on. And i'm just like how you can pull that off The this this is a really deep story it really hold hearns in on the idea of depression. Harnes in on the the need to fuck and live every day as if it's the last I do think it's it's it's a little weaker than carter..

There's plenty of music, too, with works by Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and George and Ira Gershwin. Blues from W. C. Handy and Ma Rainey works from 1925 were supposed to go into the public domain in 2001 after being copyrighted for 75 years, but Congress extended their copyright Taunton 95 years. Which brings us to today, artists who want to create their interpretation of public domain works can do so without fear of a lawsuit, leaving a range of creative possibilities.
