Who Really Owns and Operates Your Favorite Cruise Line?
"Want to talk about who actually owns the various different cruise lines around the world. Because when I talked to people about this there's lots and lots of surprises and people are really quite amazed. Couple of things to note. Did you know that? Only three key corporations control the cruise lines. That seventy five percent passes go on every single year. Just three corporations one of which controls cruise lines that cover half of all passes cruising around the world today this too big trends happening as it within cruise lines first of all the big cruise corporations. They're slowly taking up all the different independent cruise lines around the world. And what they're doing. They're creating a big mass market value brand that creating a premium luxury brand with a big or medium sized ships that go to all the famous places in the world the big popular ports they normally also have a smaller ship premium or luxury cruise line. That can go to the more out of the way more unusual places and then also have an ultra luxury brand which is increasingly they using to go into expedition cruising. The second thing is we're seeing more and more corporations particularly travel corporations getting into the world of cruising and launching a cruise line under their name before we talk about those corporations that control everything. Do you know who the biggest cruise lines in the world are in seventh place is Aida which is a cruise line which focuses on the German. Consumer in sixth place is Kosta. They focus very much on the Italian consumer in fifth place. You have princess cruises. Princess cruises have just under seven percent of all passengers in the world. Today go on Princess the fourth-biggest cruise line the world and also one of the youngest cruise lines is MSE cruises. They have over seven percent off all passengers in the world gone embassy cruise every year. They're focused particularly in Europe. They create a very European experience. The third biggest cruise line in the world is Norwegian cruise. Line and they have around about ten percent of all passages in the world on a Norwegian cruise. The second-biggest is Royal Caribbean International. With around ninety percent passengers and the biggest cruise line in the world is carnival with their fun ships which have over twenty percent so those are the seven biggest cruise lines in the world. But what and who are those three big cruise corporations that control seventy five percent of all passenger trips on a cruise the biggest cruise corporation in the world is Carnival Cruise Corporation? Fifty percent of all cruise passengers go on one of the carnival owned companies every single year. They have nine cruise lines at the time of recording. They always have carnival which is how they restarted. Back in the early nineteen seventies. They have fun ships and they basically take almost a of cruise passengers every single year. Go on Carnival cruise and they are the brand that really created all the excitement around cruising in the way that we know it today. The other eight brands that they have some. You might find a big surprise. In the premium end. They have princess cruises. Which as I mentioned is the fifth-biggest cruise line in the world and that is very much a luxury cruise line with a very large fleet of twenty ships and crews all around the world and basically based ships around the world really really popular luxury premium cruise line with sort of large ships. They also have Honda America which is very traditional cruise line with Dutch heritage. Dating right back to the eighteen. Hundreds late eighteen hundreds at a very strong link to Holland and they do also have a very traditional cuisine experience and they do cruise all around the world and they're very very strong as our princess. In Alaska they were the two cruise lines originally went into Alaska they also control in the luxury premium and Pino cruises out of the UK Piano Australia and the ultra luxury side. They have seaborn which has small ships providing very ultra luxury experience. And of course they are now going into expedition cruising then control some brands which catered to very specific markets. So they have Aida which is what the German markets they have cost which really caters to the Italian market. And then one of the brands which they have which is probably one of the most famous cruising brands of all is Cunard yes. Carnival Corporation Control Cunard. So carnival is often seen as one of the cheapest places to go cruising Cunard's often seen as one of the big prestige just because of their line expertly Queen Mary two and the transatlantic crossing that they do so. Those are all the brands within the Carnival Corporation portfolio fifty percent of all cruises. Go on one of those carnival brands every single yet. The second biggest cruise corporation the world where roughly a quarter of all passengers travel with every single year. And that's world Caribbean group. Royal Caribbean group has six cruise lines within its portfolio at the time recording. Royal Caribbean International. The big mega ships huge big ships with lots of innovation. They were the first rate is being the big resort experience aboard with their water parks and airflow riders and they're ice skating rinks and all sorts of big innovation so they create massive big ships with lots and lots of resorts features. They also have a number of other interesting brands. Have for example in the premium end. They have celebrity cruises which is a more contemporary or those still fairly traditional cruising

"Well zero real interest rates across the developed world if you get it out where else would you put money flows out of you exactly yeah it beat out how much of the of the move out is just simply supply and demand it is totally divorced from fundamentals except in a relative sense yeah no you're absolutely right and that's why I think that there in lies the the million dollar question Jeff right because you're kind of serving as a little bit of a preview a precursor to what my third subject or or third reason was going to be here on the program the markets have kind of bounce I'm going to highlight one reason which gives us Paul's and it kind of takes me into that's why I'm gonna talk about that here just a moment but your your spot on I mean when you look at the U. S. economy and we take you know beyond our borders Jeff you know where else would you allocate fresh capital new capital I mean maybe there are other parts of the world the global economy you know we look at the the M. S. C. I. world index the the the MSE ID IFI the European Asian Far East index or emerging markets perhaps there may be some economies that are somewhat stable are however they tend to in some cases with the exception of this corona virus impacting the Asian markets much more so than other parts of the world you know they they tend to follow what the US does right in in most cases so with us kind of leading the charge once the the the band stops playing here what to do that right so I I think in one in one city scenario the fed with interest rates and how they've been able to somewhat control interest rates and we look at the interest rate environment still at the lows Jeff you know I don't think we're gonna see a sudden increase in rates if the market suddenly pulls back considerably right they're gonna do what they can to maintain you know some kind of economic stimulus but I don't know that we can also keep interest rates you know this suppressed forever are so again I mean I think from a standpoint of new capital L. through this question back to you I mean if the market suddenly pull back in retreat and and we go through let's just say our unfortunately a recession would you be the type of investor who takes your capital and then maybe re deploys it to other asset classes albeit fixed income or real estate and and move out of the market for me now.

"Now back to I on travel forty three minutes after the hour number here's I own travel continues on the MS a story here in la Paz Mexico as it sailed through the sea of Cortez we've been talking up here today gone read a story and journalist and friend of our shows also on board the ship so we've now discussed the stock home then it becomes an east German shepherd acts for how many years twenty five years old and still nineteen eighty five so for years before the fall yeah wow yeah wow twenty five years as an east German shell that's a full lifetime of a ship right there right there okay so what happens in nineteen eighty five okay they finally retire her she's laid up in south Hampton for awhile because they think it's over yeah yeah the shortener name you know what happens when a ship goes to the scrapyard they take a remnant of the ship's name usually in this case she was vocal Freundschaft the shorten name to Volker I got one for you they were the SS France yeah okay yes is France and then became sailing for Norwegian has the Norway in Norway and then it blew up in the harbor in Miami and had to be taken out and no country would take it to scrap it say finally stuck it in I think Bangladesh or India India India and they named it what I know the blue lady I spent a day on board the blue lady water logged and filled with mosquitoes in India yeah I feel about okay but even so the so the okay so now they're about to retire the ship and they and they change the name to what of well she's Volker and then all the sudden others and there happened to be in eighty six eighty seven a lot of refugees coming into it to Norway from I believe Iran and and Syria of all places so they don't have any place to house these people so they see the ship is available they told her off to Oslo and she sat for two years in Oslo and they renamed or freak show finance and after the Norwegian explorer and she house refugees from the Middle East basically okay so that's another two yeah so first it's gonna be retired but no then it's gonna be retired again but now and then what happens then well meanwhile down in Italy star loro which is the company that is now known as MSE they have the ship the Achille Lauro and we know that there's a ship with amazing passed and she has a connection here yeah well chilly Laura had a sister ship called the Angelina l'oreal's which sank yes and the killer was involved in a number of Mitzi collision yes and it was a couple doing discount cruises out of general I was on one yes and that's the Klinghoffer story yes because that was the family that was on when it was seized by that but the hijackers and they threw off the side of the ship yep yep when she burned and sank off Somalia hello yeah they have a tradition find one fine tradition okay so let's go back yes to the Italian she bishop sitting there now housing refugees and say what this ship has a great hall she's a sturdy hall it would be more fortuitous to take this solid sturdy ship bringer into Italy scraper out take off the superstructure and rebuild her put new engines and and basically they would have a new ship with a much better health than they could build themselves so off the and this is a deal subsidize I think by the Italian parliament subsidized by the town government a hundred and fifty million euros were spent on the rebuilding of the ship she sat in general for years it took a long time and they literally scrapped everything they threw it all in the trash bins all the beautiful artwork market you paneling everything that was on the ship originally they trashed it but the rebuild her and they hired this architectural firm DeJoria of Milan who are now doing the the children are the big giant MSE cruise ships of Kerry five thousand passengers and they have Swarovski crystal stair cases so the I mean they were they were high end in the ship was fitted out with marble and solid brass did have a name well several come okay here we go so let's add these to the list and somebody's got to keep track of this it just Positano sorry Anto Italia Italia one these are all before she was even finished and then when they finish the rebuilding she was the a tally of premium end the first captain of the ship help supervise the rebuilding was captain derose us from killing laurel only made an opera about him when the you know he was the guy that stop them from killing more than just Klinghoffer wow okay so now they have a new name yes and it's called Italian a prima and then how long did this ship sailed into about six or seven years and she was a high and ship it right he was a deluxe it but she was sailing mainly for the German cruise market but she came over to America and she came to the west coast your cerebral east Germans who now we're part of western and they remember it has very well they remember the vocal fry Jerry yes of course it's all coming full circle all right it's getting crazy now and then yeah what happened well you're we in now okay we're about ninety six will hit so there you have a ceremony in San Francisco I go to this thing and who should lose their captain derose of from the killer Lara they're changing the port plaque with him and he's just in love with the ship and he's still in tears in the killer largest sank a year before and he was a man that took the ship around the world and he brought her brother into a new life as it were and after that she was her name changed slightly take hold on okay right thank god for we're not other names yet I got a top of the second stick with this back with more from the a story or whatever you wanna call it at this point as.

"I not modern win thirty two. For example, is the the sea-based set of API's that dates back to nineteen Ninety-three when windows NT the original version three point nine thirty two, but other other kind of platforms that they had and they support it was it just due to legacy reasons, or did they I mean things advance like in other words, the languages the technologies everything involved with creating programs that run on windows advances over time and things go by the wayside you like, for example. There was a set of technologies that sat between win thirty two and the dot net stuff. Blob people forget about called NFC, which is the Microsoft foundation classes, it was Microsoft's first stab at object oriented programming using the plus plus language. It was basic the NFC was basically a a set of cl- like object oriented classes that abstract the win thirty two API. So that you. Could access all of that stuff using C plus plus and open set of traditional like conditional programming. Whatever it was terrible. It was terrible. So it was awful like embassy was a nightmare. There were more sophisticated alternatives from other companies like boiling and so forth. But we don't worry about that too much MS's not coming back. Right. So you know, C plus plus developers have things today that they can use. If they wanna write windows programs MSE is not part of that story. You know, there are other things that kind of went off to the side like silver light or ActiveX back in the day. Like these things that were kinda dot net based or dot net issue, whatever they were. But they were. Avenues Microsoft kind of went down, and they failed kind of come back like not everything is coming back. But the way the developer world worked. And if you think about the way that Microsoft is today like just just opened the rest of the world. They they see they know what people doing people are using windfarms, they're using WPF using dot net. Well, it's old. It's old is new again. And they're gonna go where the people are in this case, the developers, and this is in tirelesly in keeping with the way the entire company works today. And so I think you know, again, people are going to see some of this negative. I'm gonna get shot in the back because on the messenger. You know? I guess I'm used to that role. I don't know. But. I also think that doing the right thing because for several years they're starting with Stevens NAS car windows eight they didn't do the right thing. They were basically leaving most of their developers in the cold. Yeah. And now they've turned that around. And I think that's smart. That is I still want. Did you we skipped over what your top? Which is what the top stories out of Biltmore for you. Oh, no, no. We didn't say, okay. The other top two were what you said. When does in also the wwl tied. You wanna I wanna tell you. And with everyone else wants to be I I have gone from chromium skeptic to chromium edge advocate. We'd never know what's going to happen. And sometimes. Sometimes what occurs. Call her checks in just blows the lid off something on a whistleblower Wednesday. Sometimes at an open line Friday. Someone has has a way for everybody to save money. Such was the case today, we started. I don't even know how we got into this. Which is usually the case, I have no idea how we got into this. Oh, no. Here's here. It is earlier this week. We were talking about student debt. And we were just saying it doesn't have to be this way, the schools should be instructing the students these government schools should be instructing these students about the risk of a government loan. And if you end up getting a government loan to go to college, you're going to have to pay that loan back. And maybe you don't need the monster loan for the four year private school. Maybe you could go to the state school. What would be a lot less expensive? Maybe you could go to community college first where it's relatively inexpensive. And maybe work a part time job at the same time. Then you finally get into the state school. You've got two years of tuition you need to cover. Hey, you can even get a part time job where you go to school. You don't necessarily have to live in the door. Maybe you could live with family a lot of ways to cut down the costs. You don't have to finish that that degree in four years. You could actually stretch it to five or six so. So that way you could work a little bit more on the side. There are ways to do this. And then you need to show them when you graduate in this particular field. This is probably realistically what you're gonna make. So let's do the math and how long it's going to take to pay off the debt. I mean, this can't be done. But instead, you've got all these all of these snivelling students or former students with these huge debts, and they're crying Bernie Sanders to bail them out. So we had a caller check in and I'll replay the call for a little later, but just to summarize. Collar checks in from Mountain View. She says, no, no, no. Here's here's how you do. It. What you do is. While you're in.

"Others know as this abuse was going on we don't know exactly what came across pulp rose dance lee staunchly defended the actions of steve penny who is the ceo and president of usa gymnastics during this time steve penny was forced to resign with a one milliondollar said france package last march due to his mishandling of this lindsay the indy star about a year ago in march published fifty six hundred pages of reports suggesting hundreds of complaints against dozens of coaches many of whom weren't banned from the sport for years and were later convicted of crimes against children of course larry nassar deserves all the condemnation an all the attention he's getting if we also need to remember that this is a systemic issue with in usa gymnastics that goes far beyond larry nassar let's talk about michigan state university were larry nassar worked as a sports medicine dr reports have come out suggesting as many as fourteen adults were informed of nasser's abuse over the years but the for years nothing was done what do we know about who knew what and when within the mse system well we certainly know that catholic legacy was the head coach of the women's gymnastics team up until just last year when she was allowed to resign once again was not fire but was allowed to resign we know that she was told in 1997 that larry nassar with inappropriately touching these gymnast and at that time she talked to the gymnast who had brought the complaint ford and said that if they went ford with this complaint it would bring great consequences to the gymnast who was reporting it and she reiterated that what larry nassar was doing was a legitimate medical procedure and that was that we know that the basically the allegations stopped with her we know that in 1999 and two thousand trainers amongst ms you athletics it's important to remember that larry nassar did not just treat gymnast he was a sports medicine doctor at michigan state university so he saw athletes from across disciplines as well as people who weren't associated with michigan state at all who just came to him because he was the best but we know that.

"Is dying by any stretch of the imagination right in fact in fact i think it's growing like crazy so said that is i think a big issue that that groups like meals are trying to get their arms around that's really interesting thinking through east sports from a strategy standpoint as an owner investor is it if you were to try to explain in a why it is that mse gets involved with team liquid if from ah from from the macro level is is is it more like nascar where you are investing then in the team and your deploying their utilities out there you're following everything making sure that the everything from broadcasting digital impressions and sponsors are linked up and there's a return so how is when we were thinking about eastwards we spent i mean honestly two years trying to educate ourselves on on what was happening and i probably did personal interviews and meetings with a couple dozen people probably more actually current investors people were already in space coaches players media networks both digital and cable related a variety of different publishers there are a lot of different layers to the ecosystem and you know a couple things emerge the biggest thing that emerges is it's an explosive category on debts fueled by incredibly organic growth it's a very organic community and you know the other thing is that a credibility really matters they can sniff out bs pretty quickly you you really need to be a genuinely positive and good actor and be respectful of the community and the players to you know some people ask me walls each sport a real sport untypically my answer that is will doesn't really matter because it's really big and it's important an you know the the players who are playing these games they they want to be treated like professional athletes and i went to e3 which is one of the big is video game conferences in the world on this past year in los angeles.

"We built out our bench again this this offseason so we do things that were stronger team heading into next year but you're right i mean you have to have guys who love the game and you've got have to have good people to out it's hard to have agreed team agriculture when when when guys don't like each other right at a high level we talk about the caps he thought with the wizards mystics arena football on an n even ease sports in a way if you were to poll yourself out of the mse platform and give a high level rundown of how a pro team should be thinking in terms of operation and and primary revenue streams if i were to say broadcasting rights sponsors gate are those that the primary focus is what else would you add to that ticket sales are a earned incredibly core revenue stream for any team season ticket members are are incredibly important customer base for us in it's our daily goal and mission to make sure they are happy in that they feel loved by the organization because on ted just make allow you to about you guys either going surpassing renewal yup the wizards have had a very strong renewal expectation expectation for the upcoming season which is really really great and indicative of the health of the franchise to on court partnerships we can't do it without our fans we can't do without partners yet executives wheat sales again vip suites in the like i think the most people think that retail clothing merchandise in apparel is a really really significant revenue stream for teams that it's actually quite small within ten percent of us.
