"News. Coming up after traffic and weather the top stories we're following for you this hour, a gunman killed ten people at a ballroom dance studio amid lunar new year celebrations and then may have tried but failed to target a second dance hall. That's what authorities in Monterey Park California are saying today and urgent search is underway across the Los Angeles area for the suspect by midday police had surrounded a white van in a parking lot. Ours earlier, the sheriff said authorities were looking for a white van after witnesses reported the suspect flee from Alhambra in such a vehicle. Two people are dead after a late night house fire in prince George's county, Montgomery county school officials are speaking out after swastikas were drawn on three desks in three separate schools. Stay with WTO for more on these top stories in just minutes. Three 48. Traffic and weather on the 8s, here's Joe Kent rather, here's Rick McClure in the WTO news. All right, sandy let's head through Chinatown where it looks like the Chinese lunar new year, the event is about ready to wrap itself up MPD is set up at the intersection of 7th and each street's northwest, getting ready to reopen that intersection soon will let you know when. The volume is starting to pick up a little bit on the freeway through southwest and southeast shows volume headed west up from the for the third street tunnel now toward main avenue and the volume off and on along the eastbound side as well from the case bridge toward main avenue. So we're keeping a close eye on that to see if there's anything other than just volume involved. And watch for some volume slowdowns, headed north on D.C. two 95 before and after Pennsylvania avenue. You're going to the southbound side of D.C. two 95 for now. I said over to Virginia, where police are still with the crash and herndon that has the herndon Parkway still under police direction both ways between Sterling road and elden street had a report of one overturned. I 95 Virginia sites, no change with the volume slow spots all on the southbound side still after lord and headed toward the academy into woodbridge. You're still good on the northbound side coming up from Fredericksburg. 66, beware of the ramp from eastbound to southbound route one ten is still partially blocked. So use caution on that ramp there. Over at Maryland had a crash reported to Miller's Vale police sorting things out. It was affecting the northbound ramp from route three to westbound route 32s, be careful on that ramp there, no change with the volume on 50, still good, moving at speed, both inside and outside the beltway and crossed the bay bridge three lanes west and two lanes east across bay, VW Parkway had a few volumes slow spots all along the northbound side, the green belt after NASA got it that's still the case, 95, no problems there to 70 doing fine and still quiet for the most part through Montgomery and prince George's counties and still moving nicely on the Virginia slide. Maybe a brief volume delay on the outer loop inner loop. I'm sorry through cheffy chase, Bethesda. So from after old Georgetown road toward three 55, this is a bit of volume building there. Rick McClure, WTO traffic. And now to storm team four meteorologist, Ryan Miller. Periods of rain, this afternoon, air temperatures will hold into the lower 40s, so a pretty raw damp afternoon

Describing it as a game to them, prosecutors say that officer Terrence Sutton and lieutenant Andrews of bosky ignored MPD's policy when it comes to vehicle pursuits when going after Quran Hilton Brown. In prosecutor said specifically that it was Sutton's driving decision that killed Quran Hilton Brown, the defense started their arguments by calling this an upside down case, noting that they're the ones who call the investigators to testify in this, closing arguments continue throughout the afternoon. Things are not doing too badly, just volume delays, 95 northbound, the brush fire is clear before Quantico, nothing left to see there all lanes are open. South on your slowdown from New England over the alka quanta one 23 and a couple of stretches for Stafford. And lewinsville road traffic affected both ways by the crash between balls hill road and windy hill road 66 is okay just volume delays westbound through Vienna fairfax city and Centreville and three 40 at harpers ferry road has the crash getting by should be getting by by alternating, but some pretty long delays there getting around that and interloop slows down at route 7 headed for Maryland. In Maryland on the island where beltway very slow past old Georgetown road at around toward river road inner loop through Bethesda and Silver Spring just volume delays same through college park and green belt and traffic on 95 on the Baltimore Washington Parkway doing all right. North by New Hampshire avenue, not doing so well, very slow getting passed through 29. It is the paving and getting my single file to the right. And it is really slow jammed on southbound route four right now. Really, all the way from wood yard road, all the way past three O one, there's still working there. And I believe they're paving, they're getting my one single lane en route four to the left, very slowly. 50 out to the bay bridge, a little bit slow getting

"We're hearing from the police officer who was nearly crushed to death in a doorway is rioter stormed the U. S Capitol last week. Disturbing video has been shared around the world. And tonight he's one of three police officers speaking about confronting the violent mob. Sam Ford from our Washington D. C sister station has a story. We've seen the images now. Acting D C. Police chief Robert Conte let three MPD officers who were there talk. That was the one that was crushed in the door, but they have a heroic story. It's the tunnel through which a president walks out for the inaugural ceremony. But January 6th these three officers were there in the crush, fighting to keep out of that capital entrance. Rioters who police that had bear Mace It's not only painful, but you literally can't open your eyes and when you can open your eyes and you're in the middle of what way would call a fight? The struggle was sometimes in the cops favor. Sometimes in the rioters. I might die and there's nothing I can do to defend myself at this point, so I just started screaming my lungs for the under. Give me a way out. Some shielded him until his partner, officer Jimmy Albright, at the top of this picture, got him back in the tunnel. He suffered a mild heart attack hospitalized two days. "We have 1700 officers on high MPD. That are repeatedly being exposed to acute trauma over and over and over again. We have retired officers that are seeing and in confirming to us. We have officers who have five years on the job that have been exposed to bore trauma and violence. Then they did in 30 years of law enforcement. The rapid succession that our officers have been exposed to is is mind boggling. And here's the fact this is what I always say. Our officers You are a sensitive as anyone to violence in our community because we are constantly up against that as well in the United States already across the country this year in 13 days, the 1st 12 days of this year we have had 12 officers who have died in the line of duty. An officer a day in the United States of America has died in line of duty and You know, it's it's just the nature of where we are. I'm sure with you guys before evil will always follow the path of least resistance and so it takes a strong position of intervention. With all the little cells to counter act that and prevent further victimization. Rick Snyder is our guest. He's the president of the Fraternal Order of Police. All right, Rick. So it's January 13th. Let's just assume we're not going to get any help from the mayor's office or elected officials. I feel pretty confident that that's probably going to be the case for this year. How do we turn this thing around? What can we do? Well, it's a fair point. I mean, keep in mind. We also still of the state Legislature. That's incessantly. They can also take action. We went before them last year and said, Hey, please address some of these criminal justice fractures that occur. You know in our local communities and help us fix these problems, But I think we're seeing the point here. We have to stop depending on politicians to solve our problems, and we need to come together. As a community. We need to come together as neighbors. See each other as neighbors and not, opponents said our egos checker. He goes out the door and get down to finding some solutions here. And it also means that collaboration point of view. Um we're seeing so much of a competition. If you will, for a limited resource is As well as grant funding and everything else that it's the people. It's the people in our officers. It's our Children. They're slipping through the cracks and getting less behind. You know, this year already and Indianapolis? We We're currently at 45 People shot. Eight people have been stabbed with nine people being killed. 53 people shot or stabbed. It's an average of four per day. Already this year. We cannot continue to go down this road. Our communities cannot be successful or remain intact when we're doing that, and we're trying to bring things back into our community like March Madness and see double a large events. We've got to provide a safe community to do that, and it isn't just go downtown. It's got to be every neighborhood throughout our community..

"Two systems of justice when we saw one That let extremist storm the United States Capitol and another that released tear gas on peaceful protesters last summer. The disparity did not go unnoticed and not by lawmakers and not by protesters. I've collected testimonials from different people and also experienced a lot while I was protesting here. Being peddled being beaten, being pepper sprayed limbs broken. I had friends in the hospital with a cracked skulls. Um, a sexual assault. Once you're booked, they take your phone and they also take your mask and crowd you together. General Ponting, loss of sexual assault and harassment of general just extreme groups, police brutality all throughout the BLM protest. The story of last week's insurrection continues to move very quickly. Several Capitol police officers have now been suspended. Others are being investigated over suspected involvement in the attack. U. S. C P says they are quote, actively reviewing video and other open source materials in quote disciplinary action, including dismissal has not been ruled out. Let's unpack the latest with Daniella Chess Low. She's a reporter for W A. M u That's Washington's NPR station. Daniella Welcome. Thanks for having me also with this ratio on Ray. He's a professor of sociology at the University of Maryland ratio and welcome back. Thank you for having me and Frank Strabo, the former chief of police of Spokane, Washington. He's now the director of the Center for Mess Violence Response Studies at the National Police Foundation. Frank Welcome. Thank you for having me on the show, and we invited both the U. S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department. That's DC's police force to provide a representative or statement for today's program, But neither dead and Daniela as I said the story's still moving very quickly. Can you tell us more about these Capitol police suspensions? Sure, well, representative Tim Ryan, Democrat of Ohio, He chairs the Appropriations subcommittee on the legislative branch that has oversight over the U. S. Capitol police and he says two officers were suspended. One of them was taped taking a Selfie where the protester and another one was in a mega had directing the writers, and he said someone else was also arrested in law enforcement. He wasn't sure if it was Capitol police or national Guard. He was talking to reporters yesterday. And he said the Capitol police are looking at another 10 to 15 other officers. They're under investigation and the new acting chief of the Capitol police, she says. It's her intend to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. Now there's a narrative circulating on social media that police officers actively Let rioters into the capital. What do we know about that? There is a lot of video coming out, and I think that Ryan's comments revealed that there was some level of Capitol police officers who had some sympathy for the writers. But I think you're seeing a lot more video Jen of Capitol police and MPD officers. Fighting enormous odds. You know, here you have a crowd of some say, 8000. Some say, 10,000. I was there. The people I was talking to. They were some of them were wearing armed. You know, like tactical gear helmets. One man I saw he had pepper spray in his eyes, but it had ricocheted off his helmet. Meanwhile, there were some Capitol police officers who didn't even have head protection. And you're seeing now in the car. And then last few days, Of course, there was that one officer Brian Sick, Nick, who lost his life during the protest or during the riot. Another took his life over the weekend. 58 MPD officers were injured. So you had people in the fray and day law enforcement really wasn't prepared for what they encountered. Give us your firsthand perspective as a reporter who was on the ground at both this summer's black lives matter Protests and at last week's insurrection, what differences in policing to to observe It was night and day. I mean, if you go back to June, 1st, That was the night If you're called National Guard helicopters were used to hover over protesters and I was there with our photographer Tyrone Turner. And we saw is the rotor wash their the wind that was caused from there was raised by those helicopter propellers. You know you had all this broken glass protesters had smashed windows and the broken glass was just flying around tree branches were flying around on that was in addition to federal agents who were on the street, You saw DEA officials, for example, monitoring traffic of intersections. And I was kind of astonished on Wednesday. I was with the protesters in the morning when they were listening to speeches from Donald Trump Jr and Rudy Giuliani and then the president himself. And during the first bit of the protest, you could argue it didn't really have a sort of violent undertone, or at least it wasn't overt. However, if you talk to people and ask them what they were thinking they would tell you that they were very angry. They would tell you that they want to tell Congress how they felt. And as they started walking to the capital, I would I ask someone what he planned to do. And he said, Well, I'd like to see Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer blown away. And even if I'd wanted to turn him into police, there was no one to turn him into. There was very little law enforcement until you got really right up to the Capitol. Frank, give us your perspective as a former police chief. What did you observe from a law enforcement perspective during last week's storming of the capital. E think, would you know? First of all, First of all, we have to be cognizant that 58 police officers were seriously injured or injured. That one police officer was killed and another police officer took his own life is Result of this event. We also saw it. We continue to see images of police officer who certainly put themselves in harm's way. Um, to protect members of Congress, their staffs, reporters visitors in the capital in the Capitol building themselves. So a lot of heroism, a lot of bravery and a lot of sacrifice..

Feds consider seditious conspiracy charges in Capitol, Washington DC, assault

"Department expects everything from sedition charges to trespassing to be levied against participants in the capital riot. Some people could go to prison for 20 years. Michael Sherwin is the U. S attorney for D. C. Acting U S attorney for the nation's capital, and he spoke during a news conference late this afternoon held alongside the FBI. He discussed what police were dealing with his writers swarm the capital on Wednesday, emphasis on assault and batteries on police officers, both federal officers. And local MPD officers that were assaulted and and as the days go on, there's going to be more social media and people will recognize that in some instances, and PD and Capitol police weren't open handed combat with somebody's persons inside the Capitol, where tear gas was used on the Capitol, police and federal officers and they were also used against some of these riders. So The picture was going to build. I think there's a lot of misconceptions about what happened within the capital, and it's going to come into a laser focus. I think over the next weeks and days, and I think people are gonna be shocked with some of the agree GIs contact that happened within the capital. The 30 react Assis that our office is also focusing on is we set up a strike force to focus on assault on the media. Some people aren't familiar that some of those riders specifically targeted members of the media and assaulted them. So we have assigned specific prosecutors in our office to focus on those cases as well. And what about two explosive devices found outside the capital. Those two pipe bombs that were found were found both outside the RNC and the DNC offices near the Capitol grounds. And, uh, look to begin. They were real devices. They had explosive igniters. They had timers. We don't know obviously, exactly why they did not go off that's being investigated. They were destroyed disabled by Capitol police with the assistance of the A. T F, and that is all obviously being vetted and investigating. What was the purpose of those devices being planned? Wasn't a diversion ery type of a tactic used by somebody's riders. Or did have some other type of nefarious purpose. So that is what the 80 f the FBI NPD are looking at, as we speak right now, and looking for those persons that planted those devices in terms of the conduct related to planning those, you know, pipe bombs, the mention of domestic terrorism. I mentioned this before. I don't like this tyranny of labels, saying an act of domestic terrorism we have plenty of federal Resource is at our disposal Plenty federal charges to address all of this conduct from felony murder related to the possession and use of destructive devices to seditious conspiracy, you know, under the federal code that has significant penalties and as mentioned with this strike force that was established to focus strictly on sedition charges. We're looking at in treating this just like a significant international counterterrorism or counterintelligence operation. We're looking at everything. Money travel records, looking at disposition movement communication records, so no resource related to the FBI. Or the U. S attorney's office will will be unchecked in terms of trying to determine exactly if there was a command and control how it operated and how they executed these activities.
