NBA looks to sports betting to fill the gap

"The nba season kicked off with a bang last night. The brooklyn nets beat the golden state warriors. One thousand five hundred ninety nine in the first game of the season with no fans in the stands looking likely anytime soon. The league is looking at new media strategies and sports betting to fill the gap and they aren't the only league doing so. How could that look. Our next guest has ideas. Let's bring in paul rebel. Founder the premier lacrosse league Paul great to see you again. Of course. The pl just merged with major league lacrosse. You say that this provides a singular destination for fans. I would imagine this. This gives the sport an advantage as well in terms of selling itself whether it be media coverage or streaming rights or any other kind of rights to carry the games. Yeah absolutely it's back. Happy holidays I think with sports in particular the ability to coalesce that have a singular message is important and for us when we look at future road profitability and just larger revenue Looking at the commercial opportunity of on now entering our third season twenty years or pro across history. That's looking like close to four thousand hours of twenty years of games at the mo of played that we can provide streaming service package as well as part of the announced we said we will get span to eighteen. Which is additional commercial assets and market now and as we continue to grow. We'll catch up to the legacy leaks. Hey paul dan great to have you back but in congrats on the deal. Quick one for you here you guys. You had that that bubble season this past summer very successful you know it was all over. Nbc all their properties. That sort of thing. Obviously no fans of how important was the sports gambling integration. You guys had done a deal with draft kings was that did that help engagement. And do you see that as a really important part of the offering the media offering going forward. Yeah it's huge allow. The sports properties have learned that we need to be more nimble. And not as reliant as call it major league baseball the traditional path to building a sports league on ticket sales the nba. What you reference malas typically rely on twenty or thirty percents of their revenue on tickets were looking at a modern sports age where it's meteorite sponsorship now sports betting merchandise in many cases the epl leapfrogs ticket sales and on the sports betting front. Dan we did a deal trap games last year and it was huge. I think what the sports betting this new gaming offers looking at now is live broadcast. Live odd integration And we're seeing networks now. Cut deals with gaming operators. If you look at espn's draft or mdc in points that so the properties are going to wedge their way and that's part one part two is i think in twenty twenty two to twenty twenty one. We're going to start seeing the entrance of bio data Related to players. So where will technology like lou on players that integrated the broadcast experience leaning more viewership and a larger handle sports ban in october. Three billion dollars legally registered. So we'll see that number continued to grow and more league revenue opportunity and board network revenue opportunity into twenty twenty

Mobile World Congress is canceled.

"So the world's largest mobile show is not happening this year. It was originally scheduled to run from the twenty four th to the twenty seventh of this month the GSA the organization that makes the event happened announced 'EM WC is cancelled the CEO of the said the global concern regarding the corona virus outbreak travel concern and other circumstances make it impossible for GSA May to hold the event now prior to being cancelled a number of companies announced they will not be the event L. G. Nokia HMD AT and T. facebook Cisco Intel nvidia Sony Sprint Vodafone and others were already not going to WC. So what happened. The Corona virus also known as Cova de one thousand nine hundred that name is by the World Health Organization Brazil. Did you make of this? This is fascinating because you never hear something like this really happening. He had two thousand or so companies planning to attend. And now there's all these questions of okay. The big companies they can have their own press events. They can have their own meetings but what happens to all the little guys what what happens when you know people who wanted to show off the powers of five. G. And make these deals you know how will that shape for the rest of twenty twenty This is a place where if twenty twenty was supposed to be the year for five G. and deals and conversations will be made to shape that will that mean that. You won't get a cool phone. That tha that makes you want to buy something new. That isn't from apple or Samsung. That you would think personally decked out with five G. coverage in the area so that people could demo mall these amazing new phones. All these other products that would be available. But with the wireless carriers not coming and then you don't have phone companies coming and then you have. Nobody coming deals will still be made but lake. We are holding onto our phones longer than ever before we need incentive to see what's new and cool so yeah a place like MDC is where the new and cool happens and the weird thing is like the past couple of years since we've been on lt even finally getting five G. and a much wider way. This would have been the year where we would see like really great phone. So I've been waiting and holding off on phones for a while because I'm waiting for five G. I don't WanNa get stuck in the middle but it's such a unfortunate time for this stuff to happen. I know it's really cool to have these kinds of tech in one place but you know what we do have the Internet and we do have phones and skype and everything. Do you think these conferences are even necessary anymore? Yeah Harlow Five G. Demo in places where there is five G. from people around and teleconference it in you know like is it necessary. It's a question everyone is asking There's worries that if you cancel something like this companies will reevaluate their budgets and go next year. Do I even need to go? And will that mean w? Mdc isn't as big or as important as it has been in the past. Think of all the money that has been poured into these companies especially the smaller ones who may be overspending outside their budgets to plan for it and have a presence there. And then like Oh. It's like a week and it's canceled so some of even said they're still going anyways to have some side meetings because they already had the plane tickets and hotel rooms and whatnot. That sounds pretty crazy. That people who are willing to keep going like forget it. There's conference going to go to starbucks and showing you what we got instead of just going ahead with the conference now. We'll talk a little bit about the corona virus for a second. Please do your research before freaking out. We'll have links to the CDC and the Mayo Clinic for information.

Mate X, 5G: All of your MWC 2019 questions answered here (The 3:59, Ep. 527)

"Welcome to the truth for tonight or Roger Chan and I'm Bridget Carey. I just got back from MDC twain nineteen in Barcelona where that show was just hat. Yeah. It was. So we all thought five G will be the key theme. But it turns out that we all come blown away by foldable phones and multiple foldable phones. If you like that's all anyone really cared about. Yeah. Just sort of run through things through we had the the galaxy fold from unpacked the week before really wall way despite all his controversies stole the show with its mate. X full device was actually the first journalist actually get my hands on it a nice. We also had a look at TCL's concept phone devices using this dragon hinge. Mechanism that allows foldable phones. And then Lastly, I broke the news that Motorola will launch its first foldable phone, which we believe will be the razor sometime in the summer. Of course, it will call the razor. Of course, the most like snappy phone, there is definitely one more fascinating devices because they mice sources say that, you know, they promises not as I looks like anything that we've seen so far which really the the fold and the made X pan filings show phone that looks like looks very much like the razor. I wanna have flat goes presumably the inside of the display would be one continues foldable of one foldable screen you'd actually closer clam shell like the old days. I feel like it's like a dream until like how to all these phones, although they're crazy expensive. What did it feel like to have the made X in terms of quality when you fold it? You've made X was I was surprised by the quality of since considering it was fairly thin. Like, I thought it might feel a little cheap. I think others have said there's a bit of a plastic field to its specially in the front. The screen is plastic Ola that allows for the the flexibility, but it does feel like it's a little cheap. And the fact that this thing folds. Inwards? So the screens on the outside. Yeah. Mixed meal war that thing's going scratched up like crazy for just a few months. Right. Yeah. And look we have the time with the price or twenty six hundred dollars for phone. I I am not getting it. But I'm just excited that these things are changing our conversation, and you know, maybe shaping the future. But this way to absolutely I think the fact that these displays offer the flexibility in terms of different designs from shapes and sizes. That's what really excites me about it. But you know, you've got twenty six hundred dollars for this phone. The gulfs is nineteen eighty. What kind of setting bar for these phones these foldable phones and they're pretty expensive. Yeah. And then also five g phones are coming out and they're more expensive, which makes me go. Why would you bother? Why would you bother the five G networks aren't really there yet? Exactly. That's the best point after all all their porting. I did the show came to conclusion the five G is technically here. It's not here any real way. And that really looking at second half to twenty twenty five service to be something material enough for actually wanna use it before we run at time. You got mentioned your big story that came out today. Yes. So I want to talk about my experience walking into a nuclear disaster zone actually court. You're so hard. I actually got chance to fly out to Japan's Fukushima DAI Ichi nuclear power plant site of the worst nuclear disaster worst meltdown in history where we got to look at the role that technology plays whether it's robots virtual reality. Whether it's drone technologies of the various Bissett technology being pulled together to really fix this. Same problem, which is supposed to take. Upwards of forty years and several seventy odd billion dollars. It's it's insane. The scope of and it's been what? Yeah. Eight years since this eight years and really only started literally scratched the surface. They just sent a robot in last month for the first time, we touched some of the debris down in the bottom of the nuclear reactor, really quick. What was your most nervous moment? Walk into this place was actually putting on the gear. I put three layers of gloves socks. Multiple boot changes hard hat face. All that in the being told that I would be in this suit for two and a half hours. Like that was not that was worrisome for me. I was a little bit. I can't wait to read the whole thing for full coverage state at check. I'm Bridget CARA is listening.

"Voice of Pittsburgh NewsRadio. Ten twenty Katy k Manju. No news today out of Washington out of the Vatican cardinal, Donald roll resigned. Pope Francis accepted that resignation earlier today, but he has decided to keep him on as administrator that issue and a few others. We will discuss with bishops zubec- right now. Joining us on the disk institute of Pittsburgh news, nine Bishop welcomed, the Katie k radio. Good to have you, sir. Thanks, man, Gino could to be with you again. And with your listener. What does it mean that cardinal world is being kept on as an administrator? Well, to there is a basically there's an opening in in a diner. It's called city content. Which means the MDC cheer were bishops it is thirty. So while he's no longer the archbishop he administered, which means until the pope names new archbishop for Washington take care of administering the diocese. So you know, several years ago when several years ago when when Bishop world left, Pittsburgh to go to Washington, Pittsburgh was open for for about thirteen fourteen months until I was appointed. And so there was an administrator who took care of the diocese before before I came in and it's happening there. He's just a caretaker of the diocese until a new archbishop is named and is your understanding that this resignation. It would be similar to a retirement where the resignation that was accepted would be on par with the one that he submitted his resignation back when he turned seventy five to one in the same unit because in in three years ago when he turned seventy five. And it's an obligation of any Bishop or cardinal when you turn seventy five you write to the pope and say reached the mandated retirement age, and I'm submitting my resignation at that point. Then the pope decide what he's going to accept it. Sometimes the accepts it quickly. Sometimes you take several years to be able to accept the the the resignation Pennsylvania attorney general Josh Shapiro said in a quote that he is now able to retire seemingly with no consequences for his actions that were documented, and I'm wondering are there consequences into UC this resignation being accepted by the pope? As a consequence. I think that when you take a look at what the pope's letter to cardinal world. Basically said was that, you know, he his reason for asking to retire west for the services, the people of Washington that, you know, above everything else in was concerned that his continued leadership. There would get in the way of the archdiocese Washington moving forward. And I think that nine Cornell for all the years that I've done I think it was an enacted. He made out of love for the people of Washington. I want to go back over a particular portion of the letter that the pope wrote to cardinal worl-, and it's getting a lot of attention throughout the news media today that you have sufficient elements to justify your actions and distinguish between what it means to cover up crimes or not to deal with problems and to commit some mistakes. However, your nobility has led you. Not to choose this way of defense of this. I am proud. And thank you. What do you understand those couple of sentences to me? Okay. I think the second point in the sentence. The nobility pieces. That's where he's talking about. The fact that he's asked for the resignation for the for the spirit of the people of the archdiocese of Washington. I think the first part of it. I think that the holy fathers taking a look at the fact that there are parameters that, you know, the Bishop world operated within an during the time when he was the Bishop of Pittsburgh, and that I seek the letter it totally fathers, noting the fact that that he acted responsibly that the he acted within the parameters that existed at that particular time so that that's my interpretation of what the pope is making that there was no intention on his part to cover come to harm anybody. But that he was working within the parameters that were there. And obviously when we take a look back from two thousand eighteen to what he did in the eighties nineties and the beginning part of the new the new millennium that he acted within those parameters. There's one more question if I may karnal world received a lot of pressure to consider the idea of resigning and took some time. And then ultimately did to what extent are you experiencing pressure to resign? And how much have you contemplated that possibility? Well, you have to be very honest with you. Prayed about it an awful lot in while. There are some people that have hope that I would submit my resignation. I can tell you mentioned. And there's a lot of people who've encouraged me to hang in there and to continue to do the work for which I was appointed. I think anybody who knows me knows that I my heart and soul lot for what I do for the people the church of Pittsburgh. And you know, it's my hope intention to continue to do that. We have a lot of healing that needs to happen. I've been doing a lot of meeting with with lay people increasing like to take a look at how could we do things better first of all to help in the healing a victims. How can we make our all of our practices tighter? So that this doesn't happen again. And I hope that I can continue that work that I've begun on lots of different different levels with the help of lots and lots of people Bishop David Subic of the Catholic diocese here in Pittsburgh, joining us on the disk institute, Pittsburgh, Newsline, Bishop always a pleasure having thank you..

"Emerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as the new president of Zimbabwe on Sunday. This comes after the election campaign which was widely seen to be neither free no fair. Although the vote itself was peaceful in the immediate often beyond me shot and killed at least six demonstrators and a campaign of retribution has been taking place against polling agents and opposition supporters across the country. The results of the vote, which in the constitutional court by Nelson Chamisa and his opposition MDC alliance, the court ruling dismissing. The challenge and confirming mnangagwa's president will be it with a smaller percentage of the vote has drawn international condemnation and would appear to indicate that the judiciary is highly partisan. Well, David Coltart is a human rights lawyer and a former MDC minister for education and a Senator in the Zimbabwe government. He joins me on the line from Bulawayo. David was the court case fair. Good morning. Gene note wasn't. It it was. Completely unjust from beginning to end the way the court proceedings were managed in my view was unjust for a very complicated case. The the original petition was over two hundred pages long. It had very detailed allegations, not just of voter fraud, but of constitutional violations. And they gave the lower twenty minutes to put forward his argument before the case even began. The government had fictive denied to me. So three South African Council who again, to argue particular aspects of the case. So just at the beginning, the the case got off to a very poor start. And I mean, when doesn't have to have a lot of legal knowledge to see that the stage being erected for the inauguration before the hearing has been handed down. Kili mean something's up will exactly in famous. The constitution does say that within forty eight hours of the constitutional court handing down its judgment. The new president has to be inaugurated Serse. Suppose they could have used that that argument. But we had far too many other stories going about how prepared they were for Emma Simpson gangway to be the chosen candidate will or others president at which indicated that of course, they knew the result. So what happens next legally can can there be an appeal, any kind of challenge? No, that's the end of the road. The constitutional court is the highest court in the land of the constitution itself is very clear that any challenge to an election ends with that judgment Nelson, Tim ISA has appealed to an African court, but it's largely symbolic. It has no power to dictate to this Imbaba Ian government toot to, for example, reverse any decision. So does it. The government really needs the international community, not least to stabilize the economy what can be done then by other countries is it just seen as interfering in a sovereign state. To the international community going forward is that we don't need any waste of agenda. We simply need international community to. Referred to symboblic constitution as Bob. We actually has a very good constitution was passed by referendum in two thousand and thirteen, although test some Arizona. Generally it is an excellent document and what the international community needs to do is to hold misdemeanor godwit to the principles contained in that constitution. What next then for this very divided country. I mean, there are two schools of thought one is that we just need to pull together and four symboblic to be a nation that works. We must go forward. And there are others who say, no, this is completely unfair, and we should never ever support this man who is really committed genocide and it has stolen election. One point two, Gina, this is known about Amazon. Managua wasn't about Robert Mugabe. It's about an unjust system. At present. It's about the overwhelming control that the military has in our society, and that is what needs to change. We've had thirty eight years of this in particular in the last two decades. We've had the military involved in the DRC involved in business. We've had them she involved in our own diamond fields. We've had the military involved in effecting the outcome of elections and swatting the the will of the people and that is the issue going forward. If we just accept the situation, we will result in it while they will result in in us having a military dictatorship innocence for the next ten twenty years. And if that is the case, Zimbabwe's potential will never be realized. Geiger's catchphrases Zimbabwe's open for business. Qatar to aid Turkey, lira rallies, U.S. rejects lifting tariffs

"I asked the BBC's, Celine Garrett in Istanbul about the mood across Turkey and which goods are affected? Well, this morning Turkey, double tariffs on some US imports and including cars, alcohol, tobacco cosmetics, slice and called a decree was signed by presidents at type our Don. And for instance, the tariffs on passenger cars are was doubled to one hundred and twenty percent on alcoholic drinks to one hundred forty percent. Sent and on tobacco to sixty percent. The vice president took this on Twitter and he said, this step was taken under the principle of reciprocity in response to US administrations, deliberate attacks on Turkish economy that is a feeling shared across Turkey amongst the pro government people, government supporters that Turkish economy is targeted, and there should be a response and the government is acting in line with that. Having said that these terrorists will not actually have a very serious impact. The United States is the fourth largest source of imports. Turkey, it accounts, twelve billion dollars of imports. However, these particular tariffs will be targeting only a small small ratio of that, and this will rather be very symbolic. Of course, Turkish government is trying to put on a brave face. Your symbolic may be, but what do people in Turkey make of all this? Well, there is this. Atmosphere of a tense cautiousness in Turkey. Last Friday, the Turkish lira the local currency had seen a record, low lost twenty percent overnight. And we're talking about a currency that already had lost forty percent of its value since the beginning of the year. But early this week, the central Bank intervened and the lira gained some ground after dot and the Turkish government is saying that the steps taken by the central men central Bank show that they are on the right path. LeRoy is declining. It has actually rallied this morning as well after a Turkish at a Turkish court decided to release to Greek soldiers. So Turkey is causing up to its European neighbours, Germany, Greece, France, et cetera. There will be talks held with Mirko mccrone and our dawn, for instance, today and tomorrow and Turkey wants to show that it has alternatives and the people in Turkey want to see that we cannot talk about a panic atmosphere in Turkey. But every now and then when someone passes by an exchange office, you see a worried face where is the dollar standing now, whereas the lira standing now. But having said that this morning lira has rallied, we're talking about lira standing at six against the dollar. Whereas two days ago, it was above seven

"And since he has spoken Turkish lira has plummeted even further well. And of course, President Trump has been applying yet more pressure. He's just tweeted that he's authorizing a doubling of the tariffs on steel and aluminium with respect to Turkey that's just come in in the past hour or so what's impact with that Huw. Well, that will hurt because aluminum and steel apparently will be targeting deter cash construction sector and the recent economic boom in Turkey. The economic growth in Turkey is very much dependent on the construction sector. And if the construction sector is hurt, then Turkish economy will hurt and already because of the fluctuation of the Turkish lira because of the loss in its value, dramatic loss or ready there had been issues in importing of these materials. And now Turkey will face even harder. Harder face and already people in the marketplaces who were buying stuff because Turkey has been importing materials were already hurt. They will feel the squeeze more and more and the government will need to act somehow selene Garrett in Turkey. The election results in Zimbabwe represent a total negation of the will of the people. That is how a lawyer of the opposition MDC described the disputed vote. At the end of July, the MDC is submitting its case to the constitutional court today with a deadline under Imbaba and law of midnight, an MD Senator David Coltart the international community to put pressure on president Mnangagwa to abide by Zimbabwe's constitution, and he warned the president of the consequences if he called the opposition MDC has a long history of being committed to nonviolence of being committed to the rule. Law of committed to respecting the constitution, and if he listens to to us, then we can still stabilize this country and take it forward. But if he decides that he's going to go to learn that he's to rule by means of coercion. And then we, we have a very problematic future hit. Meanwhile, the opposition politician Tendai BT appeared in court in handcuffs on judges of inciting violence by rejecting president, Mnangagwa victory in the election, at least six people were killed two days off to the fighting clashes between the security forces and MDC alliance supporters who alleged leader. Nelson Chamisa had been roped victory. I'll stack correspondent. Sin guide Neo is in Harare for the latest on the MDC's legal challenge. The deadline is creeping ever closer, but there is still no sign off the MDC alliance lawyers. We understand that they might file after. Lunch, but it's not clear what time that will be, who does have been camped outside. And and the question is, what time will they file? Would they leave it to the last minute or will they will file on time? So this this me Mr. Mnangagwa is still going to go ahead as planned with the swearing in ceremony on Sunday. As he said, he would do. The invitations were sent out to various heads of states around the world, and we understand that fourteen had confirmed that they would attend, but the government has always maintained that that Sunday date was tentative by law. They cannot go ahead with an inauguration. If the MDC alliance files, it's papers today because the traditional court might dispense with the case as soon as possible, either today or tomorrow, but they have fourteen days to to give a judgement. So it's likely that if the NBC does go ahead and file that that inauguration will have to be postponed. Until this matter is resolved in court, what to make of ten diabetes detention and subsequent release on bail. Interesting that president Emmerson Mnangagwa wins out on Twitter yesterday and declared that he had intervened to ensure that tend not was released. MS raised a lot of questions here assured, some people that perhaps he wants to abide by the rule of law. But the other issue is that how much the Christian is how much influence does he have on the judiciary that he can intervene in matters of the court as David Todd, stay in via the MDC hugely influential, especially Tendai Biti. He's a former finance minister. He's influential in Washington. He has the era. So what happens now essentially depends on what happens in in government in the courts here today, but also with the opposition will contest at these results and what comes out of that briefly still many challenges facing the new president?.

Tat Melillo said they hadn't heard from Zambia thirties, he told the BBC that if ten Taibbi she wasn't granted asylum, they'd request the right of passage to another country as Mr. BT's life is in danger in Zimbabwe being any communication to us to that effect. So if the that The is. decision that they've taken requested that Jess, who begin right of passage that should be taken to a country where he can sign them. He's life is in danger in this situation that's required that international law kicks in in these afforded the protection that is required now. Has been following developments from neighboring South Africa. He told James Menendez more about the Zambian forties position. Our understanding is that the some being foreign Minister, Joe Malaysi explained quite categorically and I caught where he says, they denied him asylum. He said, he's asylum applications when not merry Torius. This is the word the minister used when he spoke to the BBC that the government in Zambia says, they've denied him political asylum, and they say they're just kicking keeping him in safe custody until dozen. Bob wins tell them went to bring him home, right? So he may have to go back to him Bob way back to Harare. And as we heard from the law, they're worried about what will happen to him. There are those fears justified. Oh yes. Indeed, as we witnessed last. Week when they were protests on the streets of Imbaba following the disputed, election, six people were killed as a result, and therefore anyone in the MDC alliance leadership as Tendai bts. Remember, he is James as you know, he's a former finance minister in the unity government with Robert Mugabe. So he is quite senior in the opposition MDC alliance, and therefore he might expect the wrath of the law in Zimbabwe. Although in defense of Imbaba government, they haven't said much about this whole saga since it began to unfold today the resume as hope before the election. I mean, you getting the firm sense now that things turning siren turning sour very quickly. Yes, there's a mixed message coming from a president mnangagwa's administration here at fast in the post Robert Mugabe era. He was portraying himself as the man who was telling all of us that's Bubba, is open for business. Let bygones be bygones. He called all Zimbabweans. He came to Johannesburg and spoken to all those who are here looking for economic opportunities and said, come home, come in, build your country. And then he said last week when the police entered that, remember that press conference that was. Disturbed by the police eventually carried on where the leader Nelson Chamisa was stating his disagreement with the results. He, the president said, oh, no, everybody has a right to speak. No one gave an order to those police. So people think that he is progressive his more open minded than Robert Mugabe wants. But in practice, when you look at what's going on at particularly this case, then you realize that the more things change the more they stay the same, Milton Nkosi here in Britain. Pressure is growing on the former foreign secretary Boris Johnson to apologize after he made comments about Muslim women wearing burqas. He argued in a newspaper column against Denmark's decision to ban the burqa in kneecap, but said they made women looked like letterboxes and Bank robbers. So far Mr. Johnson has resisted calls, including from the Prime Minister, Theresa may to apologize. He's been widely criticized by Muslim groups who. Accused him of whipping up hatred of women who were full face veils. These people match Magister had mixed views about his comments. I understand probably what he's trying to say because it can feel it threatening and things like the hot bought. It know the language probably isn't the right thing to say, here's a bit controversial and what he says. Does it really resonate with anything I believe in? So pretty much ignorance, everyone's got their own rights what the ones who are. We don't. But he also about Aaron, I London correspondent rob Watson, tilled, Matthew umbrella.
