Hey, how are you today? Liam report here. The tech guy. Time for talk computers, the Internet home theater, digital photography, smartphones Smartwatches. Anything on your mind If it has a chip in the 88 88 asked Leo's the phone over back to the phones, we go. We go to Virginia Beach, Va. Charles is on the line. I, Charles. Hello. Well, thank you for taking my call from went in Very Virginia. Well, it's great to hear from you. So much chalk. This one up on their realm of simple things are always hard, and I don't have actual beginning when you're talking about Della Loggia by Microsoft azure of working on some of your classes like Wow, boys all Eric stuff again, too. But I have a question about Ah, Apple stuff on my Mac Mini. Ah Fong coming advice keeping stuff, uh, story off the hard drive. So I have gate show hard drive and then breaking down my library files, breaking the smart chunks in them off the hard drive, So replace that yourself in a weird will issue where we look at the, uh The file on the drive. And those that the memories in the size of file is not here isn't right present. What's in a megabyte range? When, um you know, I should be up in the big bite range. So is there any way I could Why That's That's certainly a sign for concern, right? If you think you have gigabytes of photos on your hard drive, and your and your computer's saying, Yeah, yeah, you got megabytes. Ah, be worried. Can you look at those photos? Do you see them? Are they there? Oh, somebody's at the door. You want to go get that? Z U P s guy They're going here? Yeah, I can see the those just fine and I'm going to, um uh, let me know what you will about that story right there. But actually, it's only been the more recent the finals too. That's been happening, so I'll know something that's puzzling. It's a Mac, he said. And are you using Apple's photos? APP to store? And you're looking at his photos use has what looks like single file. Where it stores everything. You're looking at that firing. All right. So the first thing I would do this kind of a magical thing is, if you right click on the photos library. That's That's the were at Apple stores. The photos It looks like it's a file, but if you right click on it, and you say open show package contents. You'll see. There's actually a lot there. And the most important one from your point of view is what it calls the originals. Now they've monk up all the file names and everything. But all of these should be your original photos. So look in there and you know the next time you upload a photo to Apple's photos, make sure That it's being copied. One thing I guess could be happening is it could be copied in a lower quality format. What I think is happening. If you go into the photos settings on your Mac, so open photos hit command comma. There's a feature called iCloud Photo Storage. Now this is actually Because it has started on the iPhone because people were filling up their iPhones and couldn't figure out how to get photos off of their iPhone. Right. And so I I I've said this before. I've actually talked to people. Who said I'm gonna buy a new iPhone Mine's full No, that's crazy. So apples started turning on this thing called iCloud photos, and you have two choices. When you turn this on, it'll be in the settings for photos. If I suspect this is the case you've turned on optimize Mac storage. You'll see it even says if your back is low in space, full resolution, photos and videos that is, the originals are automatically replaced was smaller. Device size versions. LBJ pegs, But the full resolution versions air continue to be stored in the cloud. So the next thing I would do is go to AA the eye photos. Actually, that's the first thing I would go to the eye photo sitting Look in eye cloud and see if you've got the originals on your Mac. That's what you want. Apple optimizes now both in the iPhone. As I said they started with the iPhone. Now do it on Mac OS, because That's apple. That's very apple. So the the idea is with Apple. People are stupid. Let's face users don't know what they're doing. So we're going to do it for him, and we know what they want. The way we know they're running out of room on their hard drive. All they want to do is browse through their pictures, so we will and by the way, there's a benefit to apple on this because you use more and more. I cloud storage, which you end up paying for, so we'll store it up on our cloud servers where it's safe. You know, the hard drive fails. Still got a copy. It's a backup, right? And we'll just put little thumbnails lower quality J pegs that you wouldn't even notice the difference. Honestly, if they want to edit it, or they wanna print it will download the full copy. You think that's what's going on? Still there. I turned off the mic because of the barking and the craziness. Okay, now, starting Now, I think my way into, um, package contents is there for you and the originals, and that looks like about the right size about turn in a high gigabyte range. That's what you want. Yeah. Yes. Now that looks right Fightback gallop to the national daikon for the soldiers only shows in the mega by range. That's the part that I mean, so you're not losing any photos is just representing import wrong. So that's that. Yeah, that's kind of a different questions like what's going on with my operating system that I'm not saying? So what I'd recommend under the Apple menu. There's a really useful about this, Mac. You've probably seen this before. That tells you you know, basic stuff about your Mac and you could click the storage tab. And if you click the storage to have not only will you see what Amount of storages devoted to what but you can also manage it so you could get more information about what's going on with your photos. You can actually click on photos and see how much is stored there. It even has an optimized button. So this is the go ahead, showing that what prompted me to call you because its shell in that gun from my eyes. I was showing the right side of the brothers and their men, and that's one contracts well, and there is showing right side of the style. But I go to hard drives that passion was just the hard drive. That's miss reporting that Right? Yeah, it could be her. I mean, if everything you know I photos is seeing it properly. I don't I don't know why. It would miss report. You know, I'm looking at mine. I see 16.99 gigabytes. That's about right. That's what I would expect. If I saw megabytes there, I'd be worried. It's not an alias. It's not something else going on. No, no. Nice, and that goes for a while. The other file signed on the contract there. Test files in the hard drive seem right, but memories and find a problem in the last year doing this doesn't seem to be going so does seem to be there for centuries. Now, the sticker drive has shown the right now there's some reason it's saying that wrong number and I know I just don't know what it could be that does some very strange If you're using a certain amount on the hard drive The finder, which is what you're using. This should tell you the right amount. I can't even think of What could be going on there? Well, it's a weird one had seen before ours and find anything online. So you know this is a good one. You know what? This is A good one. This is a at least once per show. We get what I call a puzzler. And that's a puzzler taken it from click and clack there. If anybody in the chat room or anybody listening has an idea you're using Mac OS using Catalina First Cat later there is the latest version. Why is Catalina under reporting this storage used by his photos, library when everything else is right. Good. It's a puzzler. Keep listening. Somebody might call in with the answer. I certainly don't know. And I consider myself a Mack expert. I'm not exactly click and clack, but I've been using the Max It's 1984. Optimized, but no but see He's not doing that. So I don't I don't know what you think. 88 88 s clear the chat rooms at irc dot twitter dot tv and you can leave comments on our website that's free. Tech guy labs dot com Takai. Labs dot com..
MAC Decision Not a Surprise to Huskie Football Team
"Big 10. Impact 12 received most of the attention this week when both conferences postponed their fall sports seasons. But that decision was really accelerated by the Mac, who on Saturday became the first FBS conference to pull the plug on the fall. I talked to Northern Illinois football players earlier today about their perspective on the conference call to keep them off. The news came with a mix of shock and disappointment. But when the Mack move to postpone its fall sports season and I, you players commended the conference for prioritizing their health and safety. I understood You know, and I appreciate it that you know the Mac was willing to do what was best for our health. As far as our you know, players were taking the players and doing what was right even if it was done popular pain. Other major conferences quickly fouled the max lied. However, the Big 12 SEC and a C C are all still forging ahead, meaning the Huskies would be sidelined while others play on is they deem that is not safe, not healthy to play? And people are playing. Then I would be kind of worried about you know my brothers and my friends from other schools, and I'd be worried for their health, You know, but they deem that it's safe to play. I just asked him questions on what is the reason why people aren't playing and why they are playing the separate standards and diverging medical advice Schools are receiving has frustrated some players just confused, You know deeply for now, and I You plans to keep its safety and testing protocols in place. As the Huskies hold out hope for spring. I might be a little bit more patient than I what is hoped for, but it was definitely in my plans to finish is that there are started. Whenever football comes back, I'll be ready.

The Justice Department threatened a lawsuit, but Yale said it will not change on the basis of what it called a meritless and hasty
Looking for a MacBook Air alternative? Here are your best options
"With kids about to head back to school either in person or Colle- laptops. Are. Front. And Center. Now Michalak. Air is a popular option. There's actually a pretty wide world outside of Mackerel S I'm Roger Chang and this is your charge. With me laptop expert and senior reviewer Josh Goldman. Thanks for joining me. Josh. Thanks for having me, Roger. So we're getting close to back to school season and who knows what? That's really gonNA look like you know we've got folks potentially going my kid's GonNa. Go to school with a bunch of people doing remote learning But with that said, parents will generally WANNA decent laptop for their kids no matter what their ages at this point Just start things off do you have a general tips for people on the hunt for Nick Peter? The, the one thing having you know, ended the the last school. In Quarantine the one thing I did learn from that was if you can afford to get it laptop with a larger screen than the eleven point six inch screen that most of the kids have on their chromebooks. chromebook obviously, he became really popular with schools. Except they went with models that have eleven point six inch screens which are very difficult for navigating the world of online learning. A lot of the online learning tools require more screen space so that the kids can actually see what they're doing and I think if you're going to invest in a laptop for your kid this season, get them something with at least a thirteen inch display fourteen if possible or even larger if he can. So what about touchscreen is that something that's necessary or is that more of a luxury I don't know that it's a luxury some or necessary I think it's just something that you can get these days as far as I'm concerned. touchscreens of the future everybody uses their phone all day long that's a touch screen tablets touchscreens. It makes sense for kids to have a touchscreen because that's how they're used to communicating with computers these days so. If you can get one with a touchscreen. Great. I don't think it's going to be a detriment though if you don't get one with a touchscreen and since we're talking about MAC books anyway or air replacement. macbook airs don't have touchscreens anyway. So if you're GONNA go macbook air, then you're not getting a touchscreen anyway. But one of the luxuries of gone with windows is you can get them with touchscreen. So catching and the MAC book air has been a popular option for a long time for students particularly college students But generally, what are some of the big reasons why you'd want to consider alternative is far as an alternative? if want to go with the chromebook, it's because that's what your school district is on. That has that makes things a lot easier than. Going with a separate operating system like windows or Mac os but the bigger thing for a lot of people going back to school is whether or not there their software that they need to get through school is going to work with the operating system that they have other than that it's more or less just learning to deal with the different features in the different houses. So it's not. I wouldn't say that like the OS is a big issue, but it's certainly an issue and you WanNa, just make sure what you're using his compatible with the operating system that you're going. Guys let's start with windows the the most popular operating system out there. What are some of the best options for a windows laptop. So if we're going to stick with the like as a macbook air replacement the macbook air has over the years been the most popular option for kids in school and or in college in high school students but they're. Obviously the the windows PC makers figure that out pretty quick and made a lot of laptops that look and behave in everything that MAC book air. So you've got things like. If you WANNA go really premium. Got Things like the daleks ps thirteen or the HP Specter which have a lot of the same design touches and it's just a super premium long battery life good performance and around thousand dollars. which is what you're dealing with with the macbook air. You're still at around that thousand dollar price point for their starting configuration. You can as usual get a better deal with with windows than you can with Mac. He'll usually get more features better processor, those kind of things with you go with windows. If you want to go. So those two that I mentioned her thirteen inch. If you want to go a little bit larger, my personal recommendation for most people is the Lenovo. Yoga. See Seven, forty, it's a two and one. So it's a little bit more flexible. It's a fourteen inch little bit larger screen, but still a nice compact package really good battery life really good performance and you can get it for less than a thousand dollars yen full disclosure I took joshes advice in actually purchased one. My wife and I are very happy with it so. On Josh thank you, it is it. It's one of those laptops that looks and feels like a Mac Book Air Bit and a you just getting you're getting more for your money with it. If, you want to go even less expensive on windows I like the acer swift three, which is running amd's latest rising processors and those the the processing performance you're getting out of that is like twice that of more more expensive laptop. So it's it's or should I say the processing performance is that of a laptop that's twice as expensive. Because as the swift three starts at around six hundred dollars and it's a three pound laptop fourteen inch display really really nice. Good. Battery Life But yeah, it's it's really cheap with good performance.
Seattle School Board approves remote learning plan to start the school year
"Plan for remote learning for students this fall. Not without concerns, though they adopted plan includes mandatory Covad safety measures. But board member Eden Mac was not impressed with a lack of details and educational requirements like weekly schedules set attendance. When will we actually see? An actual proposal of here is the actual communications plan here is specifically how attendance is going to be taken in each school, etcetera. Seattle Superintendent Denise Juno emphasize. The plan, provided by the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is not set in stone but serves as a template for each district to flush out on its own. Montreal's Flagship Apple Store to Close Temporarily
"Mac Daily News sites report from Canada's CTV. That says Montreal's flagship Apple Store is reclosing. Thanks to corona virus according to the peace and apple customer in Montreal dropped off her macbook last Thursday for repairs she was told she'd be able to get it back repaired somewhere between twenty four hours and ten days later. The next day though the store contacted her saying, pick it up by five PM Friday or go without it for who knows how long. I'm guessing she contacted C. T. V. because they contacted apple. While, the company would not say whether there were covert nineteen cases tied to the store. It did say the current covid nineteen conditions and some of the communities we serve we are temporarily closing stores in these areas. Apple continued. Saying words, it must have memorized by now we take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and we look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible.
TikTok Tracked User Data Using Tactic Banned by Google
"Wall Street Journal analysis has found that tiktok collected unique identifiers from millions of mobile devices without user's knowledge or consent. Here's our data reporter Kevin. Poulsen? So the data that chuck elected is called a Mac address in it's a unique number in basically any piece of electronics that can connect to the Internet would let some too is if they wanted to, they could track to talk users even after that user has completely reset everything on their phone and attempted to start over and wipe the slate. They did that by taking advantage of a loophole in Android that lets you bypass a certain. Security restriction that Google set up an android in order to get that data, we didn't find anything on the extreme end of what you could find had this actually been militia software. There's nothing that on its face is a dangerous national security. Instead, this is more like a dodged. You sometimes see executed by third party gaming. APPS and other relatively small operators who are looking for an edge in collecting data to to targeted advertising and the like. Our analysis showed Tiktok ended the practice in November and the company says the current version of the APP doesn't collect the addresses. Comes as the trump administration has been dialing up the pressure on talk as well as its Chinese parent company dance. The administration is concerned that Beijing could use any data collected by the APP for espionage. Talk has said that it doesn't share with the Chinese government and that it wouldn't do so if asked.

Mountain West will not play fall college football season
"Fall in over the weekend. It was college football's Mac conference that shut down and yesterday we broke the news that Tarleton State here in North Texas was shutting down. Played Nevil joining us now live with the latest, um, yet another college football conference saying Cove it has taken their scheduled out of commission, Clayton. Good morning today. That's right. The Mountain West conference Now it's said that they will not play. So that includes Boise State, Hawaii, Colorado State. And other schools. Within that conference. There's 12 of them total. So the mountain west Now you can add the list, and what we're waiting for now is to see if those power five conferences will follow suit. Those being groups like the SEC, the Big 12 HCC. We'll find out Maybe today, possibly tomorrow on what those leaks planned to do. There was speculation yesterday that the Big 10 was going to pull out of their fall season. Nothing official from them yet, but I wouldn't be shocked again. If those announcements come down sometime middle of this week's Yeah, that report. You're talking about Cam from Dan Patrick, Who said it was, I think 12 to 2 vote with only Nebraska and Iowa. Not wanting Tio cancel football season. I'm curious
Power Five conferences consider cancelling 2020 football season
"There's been a big push from coaches and some players to convince the power five football conferences to play football this fall. The season is on the brink. The Big 10 and Pac 12 will hold meetings with their medical advisers and school presidents, and they were likely be a vote on whether or not to cancel the fall football season. The latest concern Heart issues as a result of the Corona virus that had been discovered in five big 10 athletes and several athletes around the country. Meanwhile, Ryan David head coach at Ohio State, says his players are all in. Regardless, here's the major talking point that they feel like And this is this is coming from them. They're safer here in our facility playing football, then they would be without it. I'm not the only one to say that our our big 10 coaches we get on the call. They've all said that they want to play football. And so we want to support our guy's the best we can and advocate for them to give him the best chance possible to play doesn't matter what the coaches and players want. The decision on whether they'll play will come from the school presidents period. If the medical advisers say it's not safe. And the schools will vote to shut it down. The Mac conference shut down all fall Sports Saturday and the Mountain West followed
The Fate of College Football's 2020 Season
"Ridden Berg thank you for taking a little bit of time after what is zoom is an incredibly chaotic day to chat with me. GREAT TO BE WITH IT'S A. Very historic and like you said wild and crazy time right now in college football, we figure out whether there'll be a season if there is who way. Adam Ridden Berg is scrambling to cover college football including the big ten. conference. For ESPN. Adam I want to start by rewinding a little bit actually from your perspective. What last week looked like because as a Friday, it kind of looked like we were GonNa have some college football. There was this path moving forward on that front and so if you had to make a chart. Of how things stood last week of who is in who is out who was on the fence for actually playing college football what would that chart have looked like? It's like an optimistic chart going back to two marsh but certainly even last week I still felt fairly optimistic about the possibility of a season. We had Yukon that announced on Wednesday that they weren't gonNA, play but they're independent. They're not connected to these television contracts like others are even these these group of five. Leagues. And then Thursday into Friday. He was hearing from sources around the sport that, Hey, this Mac meeting that was on Saturday in the mid American conference that was to be significant. That, there was a chance that at least one school was not going to play and others might be in the same boat and the whole league might decide at that point to postpone the fall season and football. It Yo it became clear that we were heading a lot closer to a you know a national postponement or at least a large groups of the College Football Leagues deciding not to play this fall. And so Adam you and I are talking at about six Oh five pm eastern time right now on a Monday so. What happened today and it will I guess what was the first thing that happened today on your feet? Well, again a lot we reported ESPN and others that the the big ten presidents were strongly leaning towards postponing that was on Sunday, and then you're the news that broke overnight was significant that this crash tag we WANNA play movement From Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin fields of Ohio state. Some of the most prominent players in college football were getting real traction I mean this is your became the number one trending topic on twitter for a little while that was sort of the big story overnight and then today it's just monitoring. You know what's going on in the big ten. There's been reports that they've already canceled. That's not a at least as this recording that's not true. The Mountain West. Late, this afternoon did decide to postpone their seasons. So that's the second FBI's conference after the men American to decide not to play football and other sports this year. and You specifically cover the big ten that's your beat, and that's the conference. Everyone seems to be waiting to see what move comes next. So what exactly as we speak now is happening with the big ten this evening. Right. So it appears that the athletic directors are or speaking that's not a huge deal because they talking all the time now in the League but th, there's a sense of when they'll be a formal vote among presidents that hasn't taken place. I haven't heard from many sources that vote among presidents it's imminent but in theory I, it wouldn't take very long for that to take place if the League was ready to move forward with the postponement. So I think the discussions now are regarding timing whether some of the positions have changed around the conference. You've had a number of prominent coaches speak out about their desire to have. A season the big ten Pablo has always been a league. I I've covered it for a number of years that's been largely unified on the big topics and I can't remember a time where you've had a group of presidents that seem ready to postpone for the most part. But then you have many others loud voices in the league like the coaches like the players saying this isn't right. You can't do this. This is a wrong thing to do at this point and so that that's that's a unique spot for a conference has always prided itself on your equal revenue sharing and you're trying to be unified in its messaging.
Power Five conferences consider cancelling 2020 football season
"It stands right now I mean this is what we're looking at right at this very moment that it doesn't seem like there's going to be a whole lot of college football this season and so. We're going to talk about the NFL season. Our season preview issue has to hit newsstands tomorrow as it stands right now with a lovely story by Jenny RENTA's on the cover, which is very excited. Very excited to talk to her about that and a little bit but let's just I acknowledge the weirdness of the fact that we have no idea what's going to happen the impact that this is going to have. On the NFL season on, you know they're not going to have college football You know we've seen evaluators already saying that this combine is going to be monumental because you know there might be a ton of kids without any tapeh that you're GonNa get to look at transfers who's leaving early I mean this is going to be I think chaos sort of hitting the funnel right now and everything's about to explode. It seems like the decisions from Yukon and then the MAC conference for kind of the first two moves that really got the ball rolling for the power five conferences to reconsider the season and everything really came to a head on Sunday Nights You had indications that there would be no football season that conferences were meeting to discuss this issue and then you had players saying they, they wanted to be able to play but also would. Hope to unionize, which is another significant development. So it's been a pretty chaotic twenty, four hours for college football, and so then the NFL is kind of moving ahead as scheduled things came to a head I. Think Sooner for College Football for a lot of reasons we've had players who have had. Issues, after testing positive for Cobra had entire teams that had to be quarantined. The NFL right now is in this training camp kind of locked down tight mode it's it's not a bubble obviously, players are going to and from, but it's kind of the normal constraints of training camp, and so we don't really know yet if it will work for the NFL obviously they are in a better. Position Than College football because players are represented by a union that is the big difference here, work working conditions and everything that goes with returning to work in pandemic had been hash out ahead of time, and there were clear protocols in place across the board So we still don't know if it's going to work for the NFL, but they're certainly in a better spot right now than college football. Thought. Teammate. Ross dellinger did a good job of illustrating one of the main issues which was you know there were doctors on these conference calls with the heads of all the power conferences and saying you know their studies that are coming back from Germany that. Percents seventy percent of the people who get the corona virus and their asymmetric and move on still have heart issues you know and that impacts athletes significantly You know I mean if the speed at which your heart beats or the size of your heart or whatever's going on there I mean that significantly impacts someone who doesn't aerobic sport right and who has to worry about you know. All their conditioning and all that kind of stuff and how the heart's pumping and all that kind of stuff and so I it blows my mind that we've gotten this far already down the down the road with the NFL, where in everyone just kind of looking over at college football now and saying Jesus is going to be us and it's hard not to think that it will be right i. mean the NBA seasons kind of plotting along? I mean there's Some little signs of positivity here and their Major League Baseball seems to be you know stumbling and then recovering stumbling and then recovering but I mean, we really going to have such a better idea about this and three or four weeks than we do now at I really don't know. Yeah. On what you raise is such an important point that we don't have all of the answers on the long term impacts of covert and that's why it was so silly earlier. This offseason, the people discussing like, Hey, it's a competitive advantage of athletes. Get it. Now, they don't have to worry about getting in the fall when first of all, we don't even know how long the you would have immunity from getting the virus, and then secondly, we don't know the long term impacts on the body, and as you mentioned the research coming back as indicated that for some people, it can be severe and long lasting and we know impacts the circulatory. System has neurological impacts. Those are very serious beyond just a simple virus that you get over. So it was never a binary thing where you either have a, you know a fatal outcome or a mild case. There's a lot of outcomes in between and I think for college athletes especially who are eighteen to twenty two years old who are not getting paid who are not professional athletes making this decision who also have school to deal with there just are. A lot more considerations at play and I. Think once you had conferences saying we're stopping play because we believe that it's safe. Then it really put the pressure on the other conferences I think to say, well, you know we can't make the claim that it's safe. Other conferences are saying it's not
US employers post more jobs in June, pull back on hiring
"Employers advertised war jobs in June compared with the previous month, but the overall hiring fell Painting a mixed picture of the job market. The Labor Department says the number of jobs posted on the last day of June jumped a 5.9 million. That's a solid gain but still below the pre pandemic level of about seven million.
Defending MacOS Against Sophisticated Attacks
"I've come from a kind of unusual background I guess for somebody in Cybersecurity. In. The sense that I started. I. Mean I've been involved with the MAC platform for. Something like fifteen years or more. But I didn't really start getting into it in a kind of technical way until about eleven years ago. And, I just started out on Apple's support forums trouble-shooting. Volunteering. Troubleshooting advice to people. And after Wa, that led me to most problems that are coming up back then were or it started to be when we started to see security issues like adware and things like that. And that sort of an Brown about way, let me to develop my own software to basically deal with all these issues. Instead of answering people's questions all the time. and. So for about five or six years I was. Developing my own software and doing that and. Then, about two years ago, I joined central one, basically, they were looking for somebody who had background in McCoy security shoes to sort of help with with research. And somebody who kind of knew the threat scape and sort of seen it evolve so. That's kind of how I got to today. Janka. Where do we find ourselves today when it comes to Mac Os and and sort of the state of things when it comes to security and what's your estimation of where we are? Generally the Mackie's a safe platform. I don't think. There's a big argument about that, but I think the the issue really is that. There is a malware problem on Mac os which never existed maybe five or six years ago. It's actually even escalated again in the last couple of years I think and I think part of that is to do with the fact that Maxim now. Foul often found in business environments whereas they probably weren't. Going back was five or six years would really. Popular Business Machine. And I think it's also that. Just to use his vague general term threat actors. Realized there is money to be made from accuses. Possibly it comes with the development of the iphone from two, thousand seven. But the fact that people now have them. Max connected to so many other devices there a rich hunting ground for people who want to. Gather, data of adware. We. Also have some more targeted actors as well with the business environment. So. I think the situation today really is that. There is a lot more threats, for Max, and has ever been before, but I think also not a great awareness Soviet. If you compare that to say windows. Yeah. You can ask even the most basic windows us and they probably know what an AV is probably know that they need to have windows defender turned on or something like that. But with MAC users, I don't generally get that sense of awareness. You know this is sort of general feeling that it's a market. It's safe by design. You know I think that's. Something that people really need to have second thing about with the kind of threats that we see these days. It's it's my perception from the folks that I've talked to that the majority of the The malware hitting Mac users seems to be adware people. It's that classic update your copy of Flash and then something gets installed shows. Ads is, is that an accurate perception on my part I? Would say, so I think I wouldn't like to give figures because I don't really have the data to to say that, but you know it. Sort of. Off of the top of my head, I would say, probably seventy eighty, maybe even ninety percent of the stuff I actually see on a day to day basis is going to be adware and it's Kinda cousin, which is the stuff recalled bundle way all the kind of. Potentially. unwanted. Software. That gets installed alongside says, download some software manager and you get like ten. Things back keeper and Lisov utilities that are not really often any any value. That often get installed. Through hidden, very, very difficult to see check boxes and things like that. CRYPTO is also thing. We've had allowed minor bird minors in the last couple years that they've been intimidated detections. We see those on the rise quite a lot. and. Too, much lesser extent. There's bits of the spyware. Data stealing stuff, Anacostia things that get headlines every hour now, and again is the. Things Lazarus or AP GM era. You know very very targeted dings going after specific uses. So yeah, I. Mean I. think that's a fairly accurate way to think about it. In terms of the general user. I, think the most threats they're looking at our. ADWARE unbundle where? The other problem that I'm I see. Developing is when we look at these adware bundle where actors and. Listen to in the media's general slayer which has been. Pretty proactive in the last eighteen months, or so what you see is a lot of interaction between between themselves and a lot of swapping. So you get adware sources installing bundle wear and you get bundle where download is that are serving up where and it's it's kind of difficult. Actually a Lotta time to pull up different players, all these sort of paper install kind of things, some serving adware, some of them are serving genuine malware so. It seems as if there is a lot full of interaction with these guys. In terms of helping each other out to. Serve this. I mean I just called a whole lot malware. Basically, something that the US had doesn't want doesn't know and is not in our interests and as you know as far as I'm concerned it, you might as well call it all where. The number of these things his what's really. Quite. Shocking. When you look at just how much more of this is occurring this more this year than there was last year, you know almost exponentially, and this seems to be more players as
Apple Announces Remote Work Until 2021
"The same day that apple reported surprising third quarter numbers announce afford for one stock split and started another historic run up in the share price. On the same day that all that great noise was being made. Apple quietly told office workers C. next year. A very short piece from Bloomberg Apple CEO, Tim Cook appearing on Bloomberg, TV saying, we've kicked time period that US employees would come back until early next year. To go beyond that, it would depend on the success with the vaccine success with
Jumping Into Markdown
"Many Stephen Hackett, and I, have joined is always of my co-host and friend Mr David sparkes. Hello. Steven. How are you? Today? I'm good. How are you? I am ready to talk about markdown. We're touching the third rail here. The podcasting Faux Pas, we're going to talk about a little bit about coating on an audio podcast. I, think mark down the big exception. As we get into this. The whole idea is that it's really simple and so I think we can talk to this syntax and be just fine. Yeah Yeah. Well, this is a good episode we're going deep on markdown today Marc out something that a lot of people are aware of, but not as many people know how to do and it is really easy get through this podcast today. Down pro. I think so too before we get into all of that just real quick it is. We are in August. Now, I don't know how that happened. But we we will be working on and planning episodes around Iowa's fourteen. Macara's Big Sur. Couple of people had had asked about those I. Think we'll do what we did last year and and have A. Episode per release win. That is nobody knows and so we we're kind of keeping an eye on apple said in their results at the phone will be later this year by a couple of weeks does that mean? In Big Sur. Later, by couple weeks to WHO knows nobody knows. So this is going to be a fun adventure all in together this year. And related questions I've had from people are what about shortcuts and the photos field guide the most of those areas got up with this new operating system I. Think I'm going to have an a free update shortcuts when they launch Iowa's where team, but the question is nobody knows when they'll launch it. So if they launch it next week, I will not have an update ready, but there will be an update eventually or hopefully on launch day for shortcuts followed by a free update photos both of those will be free last year. I had to charge for shortcuts because apple rewrote shortcuts I to do the whole thing from scratch fortunately, that's not the case this year. So I'll have some so free updates. If you've already about those field guides also today we are going to in more power users. We're GONNA talk some tech stuff stephen is getting ready to prep for the annual the podcast on and right there's a bunch of technology involved with that. So we're looking forward to talking about that more power users today. So technology and sobbing both. Both. Right now. I really this is a stranger I have a lot of questions. boy Yeah. So let's get into. It's going to mark down. Just. A touch of background markdown was created by John Gruber the writer of daring fireball. We spoke about this episode four, hundred, sixty, six AMAC power users where he was a guest talk about the history of it. He's given other interviews about the history of markdown. and. It's really cool I. Mean it is sort of the definition of writing a project to scratch an edge. You have. He wanted a tool for riding on the web that wasn't. Junkie and Messi like html is and markdown came out of that desire I. think that's pretty cool. Yeah I mean John had a blog. He was one of the first that I was aware of the did the linked posts you know where he would link something and make a few comments about it, but it also have more extensive posts. and. He wanted simple method right in. So he did He created his own tool, and who would a guest that it became such a big thing. It's everywhere and we're GonNa get to that later in the episode of just how many places you can use markdown and it shows up in some pretty surprising projects and websites across the Internet. And the idea of it really though at its at its foundational level is just something you can write with any plain text editor that at the end of the process gives you usable text for html at least that was the original idea now since then it's become so much more because now you can export as rich text and you can do all sorts of cool things with markdown but having a starting point where you can sit there with the keyboard and not have to fiddle with code snippets and make something that's usable later. That's right. So the initial pitch when Gruber announced it is that this is a tool to convert plane tech's to html for people who are riding on the web, and so if you're blogging and you need Italics were bold or links, you don't have to do that in html you can do it in mark down and then they're marginally two things. It's the syntax and there's an interpreter and you can. Get it on your website and it Lowe's html and everybody sees a regular web page. But like you said over the years it has. Shown up everywhere. It's even supported in x code now as of a couple of years ago, which is gonNA. Feel pretty good. If you're if you're John Right this product you built being blessed and put an exco that's gotta be pretty. Cool. Talking about those two pieces of let's break them down for a second because the first piece to me is almost is definitely more important than the second piece in the first piece is it's a text syntax where you can include links and rich text items without having a rich text. You know nobody in air quotes here, word processor at your disposal, and that is something that's very useful but the syntax in addition to being something that's easily convertible he also made it and I think this is the genius of markdown he made easily readable. So when you read if I put a page of html in front of anybody listening to the show next to page of mark down. It would be obvious how much easier it is to read markdown than html because h inasmuch codes and tags and other things in it that really get in the way of finding the words whereas markdown is all about the words and the very simple syntax we're gonNA teach you here shortly. embeds all that stuff for you. So you don't you don't need to worry about.
"mac" Discussed on Mac Power Users
"Are thanks to fresh books for support the show all right? Let's go from hardware to software in particularly the operating system Mac. Os Unlike IPAD OS. That's a year-old Mac. Os is a little older. It is Mac. Os Ten first. Public release was nineteen years ago. It's a lot of change. Of course a lot has changed but the bones are still the same right. You still use it the same way. They still the dock and the finder in the menu bar. I think for the most part if you sat somebody down in front of almost any version of Mac. Os Ten or MAC OS. They would be able to figure it out I. I wouldn't even argue if you took someone that went back on that original one. Twenty eight K. Mac they would be able to generally get around on the modern version made a lot of the paradigm are the same it is. It's amazing even from the classic Mac. Os Ten. How much shorter. Stay the same in Mac Os. Tin Really was a complete reboot. Right it was a different operating system. And they brought over a compatibility with some some old stuff but for a long time every year every version of macos. Ten wasn't every year the beginning every couple of years. It was like a big deal right like they added things like. Oh now we have a calendar application now. We have a browser. Now WE HAVE WINDOWS FILE SERVER. Stuff it really. They started very small. Th Th the thing. I was really struck by when I did. Those screen shots of the various macos. Inversions was how small like how there wasn't that much to the early versions. And you look at it now. It's it's obviously much more complex. But for long time they were just slowly building. Their house brick by brick. Yeah I I was the other day I had my tiger. I saw my tiger t shirt guy. Yeah getting in line you know tonight it released Hamas those days but I feel like for the longest time each year or two years they would release a new version and what they were dealing with was building a top and existing foundation like they would figure something out and the release. It came a few years ago. Didn't change that but added a new feature somewhere else in the operating system. Spotlight would be the exception. I feel like spotlight made continual improvements over many years but many of the features like okay. We've finished that now. We're going to tackle this other problem on our board and the thing you could rely upon as a user was the stuff that they fixed. The last time was going to stay fixed. You know For many years I felt like a a new software. Update might mean that I have something. That's a little buggy with respect to new features but the old features are going to continue to work and maybe I'm looking at it through rose colored glasses but I feel like a problem. They have now is that that's not necessarily true. I feel like things that work in one version of the operating system may break in the next version and granted. Much trying to be an apologist but I do understand that now. They're trying to work on multiple operating systems and make things talk to each other and now there's just a lot more moving pieces so it's easier to break existing things by adding new things. But that is I. Think a weakness in the operation of this point is you. Don't have that security in mind that everything's GonNa continue to work that worked before. Yeah I think that's true and it is easy to look back on old versions in. I remember when macos ten leopard came out if you were running like Servers Norton. Antivirus your machinist. When it boot any more right like they've been issues but I think the underlying thing which are getting to is that it is just so much more complex now the MAC. Os has to get along with its Iowa's and IPAD OS COUSINS. That cloud is basically got it soaks in tons of different parts. Yeah I mean it's all over the place and Mac Os and in some places. It feels like the old way of doing things in the new way of doing things or sort of in conflict. One of my least examples of this is in mail where you have in males preferences you have an account section but then also in system preferences you have a a web or online accounts section and. It's not immediately clear what you can do in each one. As why are these things in two different places like if you want them in a centralized location like it is an eye us? Get rid of this pain male. But they haven't I don't know why and it's just some of those things just feel like this. This there used to be one way to do things and now there's more than one way to do things and everything hasn't made the shift yet. Yeah I I think I'm male. I mean the things I heard kind of from from folks when used to go to W. W. C. Was that they done a lot of work under the hood and not so much. Easer facing work and probably. That's just on the list but I I do agree that it's just like You don't you just don't have the guarantee that I used to feel regressions or more common. And maybe that's just part of the price of admission in a world where you have all these cloud hooks in you have all these different platforms that needs to work with but I would like to see that. Get BETTER IMMI too. I think there's also maybe a cultural thing going on with Mac. Os where in the early days. Macos ten was you understood that it's user base. Pretty well right. There's a lot of students. It was a lot of artistic types and that was pretty much it because that was all apple pretty much had when macos since started but over. The years has grown MAC. Os has grown into a much more. Broadly used operating system and as that has taken place. Apple's had to add features. And now you have things in both first party applications that you didn't have before. I remember being a big deal and they added I cal- The calendar application. It's like Oh is part of the operating system is not. It's hard to tell and now the OS comes with so many things because people just expect that when they unblocks their first Mac book air for the first time and that has led led to a lot of complexity. And I think that there are. This is speculation. Just feeling on my part. So like don't read into this more than just that. It's my feeling is that I have the feeling that there are a lot of people at Apple working on Mac. Os projects that aren't that don't have the history of the Mac. Sorta flowing through their veins. Like maybe David Ervine I do and as that happens which is naturally the higher a lot of young talent. It's totally natural. But as that's happened what the M- what it means to be a good map or what it means to be a good MAC feature has slipped a little bit and look. I still believe Mac. Os is the best computing platform on the planet. I like that look. Maybe I'll switch to that like. I want to run MAC. Os as long. You know as long as they make it but it doesn't mean that it hasn't changed and some of those changes are bad but at the same time I think some of the changes are good. I think features that they've added over. Time have made the MAC a better place right. Things like notes for instance like a really good way to sync data between all my devices with the clouds. There's lots of good things that have added but it seems to come to the expensive stability ever at least every couple of releases. Yeah agreed and I think that setting aside stability. Let's assume they they fix that problem and I do believe they're working on it But you know what are other things that it could improve upon One for me is window management and And others comes up on the MPU podcast quite often but just the Bilton window. Management tools are are pretty bad Yeah yeah the APPS and Keyboard Maestro you can work around them which is one of the Nice things about the Mac but the But just the I thought well. I'll try again apple's because I don't have the extra monitors said well try and set up some additional screens and it's it's like handcuffing yourself when you use the built in system. It just doesn't even make sense. It takes extra mouse clicks. It's not as fluid. I mean there's really almost no reason to use it because it's only half done. I mean I feel like there. There's a bunch of work to be done on this operating system still. Yeah I mean just look at how mission control has changed over the years they've taken away and added and tweaked. Now you have split-screen APPs the last couple of years like they make very little sense in some context and yeah they're trying to add a lot of things to the interface. That aren't the haven't been there the whole time and some of them have worked better than others. I'm when they added spaces in Leopard Snow Leopard and thinking like Oh that's really cool but it wasn't for me but it for a while it was like a you have expose and you have spaces and the mission control kind of brought it all under one roof. And they've changed out a lot and yeah. Some of those features could be a lot better. But what is cool about MAC? Os is you mentioned. Move and and other applications where you can. Kinda do what you want in terms of things like window management and. There's no way that's going to happen on an IPAD right. That is a thing that is very specific to the MAC and one reason. I love the Mac because I can't tweak it in tune it to make it do what I wanted to do. So Catalina Yeah. Is it as bad as everybody says it is? I have many complicated thoughts. I think I think it is easy to to look at the death of thirty two bit. Apps and sort of how rough some of the catalyst APPs have been and say oh we're catalina is not a good update because of these things broke a lot of my workflows or the new catalyst. Apps aren't as good and those are fair and right assessments and I agree with those assessments. But if we take them off the table for a second we just look at. Catalina is an operating system and take away some of the other things that with it. I don't think it's any worse than the last couple of versions. I think at the OS level. I haven't had the USB audio issues that. I had sort of in the early mojave days. I haven't had some of the the weirdest stuff I had with high Sierra and the APS or the S for a transition so thank the OS itself is fine but.

"So there are things out there that we haven't read yet, but in looking at the specs, the baseline MAC pro GPA is not as good as the GP you in my MAC pro, and I do a fair amount of four K video rendering does happen on the GP. So I'm afraid that to spec, the MAC probe where I would need it, it would just be way out of reach financially, I would like to own one, but I don't I can't say sitting here today that's going to be under my desk at the end of the year. I'm sure it would improve things, but it would be expensive. Yeah, I have no interest in it. I the MAC pro was there's a good argument. Made I didn't need the I MAC pro but VM, but just looking at the high end uses of the stuff I do have to say that every keeps using this term pro user, I feel like there's a lot of pro users that don't need and I- MAC pro. Oh, yeah. That's very that's already brewing, MAC pro. I guess, but the but at the same time I really appreciate that apple has definitely planted its flag and said, no, we are still here for pro users and the people who make some of the, the biggest and stuff can do it on a MAC. Absolutely. And also the MAC pro I've been so happy with that, I know you have to with yours. It's it really fits my needs really well, so I'm going to long and hard at it, but I would say that, it's, it's not extremely certain that, that I'll do that. And part of that is gears a little bit part of that is the display. I like John Syracuse so would want the whole package and that display is, is beyond what I what I need to do. Because again, if you think about who apples building this for if you're talking about, like video production, work chain stuff, where you're spending that money that reference monitor I don't have those needs that monitor is extreme overkill. For me. I do wish that they had something more, forcible, that didn't have all this features, but they don't do every day and, and that is plays not in my future. Maybe like thirty years when I can pick one up for the collection until then there's not going to be that display on my desk. And that does make me wonder what I would hope the MAC pro up to there's lots of good options out there. But you know, could I live as MAC power? Co host with ace monitor like. I sleep at night, knowing that's in my studio waiting for me every morning. I when I was walking around the, the MAC pro demo Paul they had these monitors on every station, and they look like my monitor to me, they didn't look that different. And I was having trouble computing wise this, so expensive and let me just say, I'm not a monitor guy, I don't keep up with this stuff, and then as I said, in the interview with Doug when I got to the photo station and I saw, you know, used appropriately and I had a live sample next to have my, my monitors never close to look that good. But I feel like apple has kind of their victim of their own success. Because the monitors in the I Mak are amazing like I bought a second monitor to put on the side of my MAC, right? I bought four of them, and I shipped Amazon, I just kept shipping them back because I couldn't get one that was even close. And Finally, I said, well, this is the best of a bunch of junk, that's the one ended up using. Yeah. And so, so I think for a lot of us, it's like, well, we can't buy. An I MAC looking monitor. There's you can't go to Dell and get one of those in that panel is so good..

"There's one less thing. I I will mention while we're talking about this remote connection. If your MAC mini is headless that would mean, it's not hooked up to a display MAC OS will set the default resolution pretty low, and so when you remote into it, it may be sort of difficult to get around. And so there's a little HDMI adapter. Our friends at MAC stadium came up with this and found it, and it's basically just a little it's just a little dog'll that plugs into the HD my port, and it basically tricks the MAC mini into going into. To ten eighty p. So when you log into it remotely, the resolutions, a little more usable. So I use this on our headless MAC mini that we have with relay and it works. Great. I can connect with screens and everything it's a nineteen twenty eighty a really usable size, and it's like nine dollars on Amazon is pretty pretty hard. It's just it's just a little plug, and it's like a half dollar Idi bitty. So if you if you run into that where you're remolding in and the resolution is not where you want it to be then this may solve that problem for you. It's called the compu- lab display emulator at that. That's just a cool name as a great name. I think I just need to get one. Just for just for the name. This episode of the MAC power is brought to you by saying box. We all have Email. We all have too much Email, and it can be difficult to set up the filtering or the rules that we were talking about to make it manageable. As we're saying box comes insane box is really smart. And it learns what Email is important to you..

"And then put it on arm, and that was cool. And you kinda can't do that now. But with the I MAC pro you can it is a little bit of a strange decision. I think the feedback they got from pro customers was that, you know, these kinds of systems often get mounted on a wall or on an. Arm and they wanted that versatility rather than having it be like either one or the other. And once you get it. You're stuck with it. Yeah. And before we move on because both the I MAC pro in the I MAC are a little long in the tooth. If someone's listening in thinking about getting a new one any advice. You know, I I'm sure there will be an I MAC update, I'm MAC pro update at some point. I'm I think more likely the IMAX will get updated in the next six months. The MAC pro might think Intel is working on a news EON processor that might be good in this. But it would not surprise me. If this has a long upgrade cycle where it might be another year. Plus before we see something. I mean, I hope not, but it could happen. It's it's it's still to this day. I mean, it's an incredibly powerful MAC. It's basically the most powerful MAC you can get. And if you want that kind of power, go out and get it, obviously in two thousand nineteen the the new MAC pro will come and that will have its own. You know, it will it will take that crown. Right. And that so if you can wait you can find out what the the MAC pro has to offer. And then also there's the new MAC mini, which is depending on your needs can be specked up to be a pretty powerful system. It's. Own self. And even if you graphics, you could stick an e P you on it. So there's lots of things you can do with that. So the it's more complicated now than it was a year ago when this was very clearly the MAC to buy if you wanna powerful MAC, but I do love it and for a certain audience who doesn't really care about the needing a modular MAC pro with an external monitor or anything like that. It is is pretty great. I love it. I have no regrets at year later, and I do suspect that macro is going to be a lot more expensive than the gonna be a five K, MAC pro. And for people who are looking to to buy out there, where do you think they get the most bang for their buck now where where should you spend your dollars? If you're going to be configuring your machine is it on ram on updated processor is it on a bigger hard drive. I mean, I know depends. But if you're your dollars are limited and you've got to put them somewhere. Well, I mean, it does depend I feel like ram is probably the best place to start. If only because it's a lot easier to do outboard storage like buying an external SSD is it's not cheap, but it's not super expensive. And it's also pretty easy. You could even Phil Crowe it to the back of your I MAC, for example. Right. Like, you can get out outboard storage pretty easily or if you've got network attached storage. There are lots of ways to go. I don't think you necessarily need multi terabyte SSD inside depending on what you're doing. But I think that ram it's harder to to update that although on the on the I MAC it's easy to. Update that so you can models that after the fact on the pro I should say, and yeah, the twenty seven inch five K, I MAC as well. There's a little door that you can get access to that's got the ram modules in it. So so, you know, I think in most cases the processor updates are not the best deal. But on some of the MAC mini models. I think the processor updates can be very good because the base model is an I three, and although it's pretty fast. It's an I three and you can get up to an I seven for that. And likewise on the on the I MAC pro depending on the workload you're doing. I have I have several friends who have the ten core model and Phil they felt like that was the best kind of price performance option for them. And so I can see it there too..

"Big thing in the gaming space and of course steam as we mentioned earlier is awesome but as the as david mentioned and as the apple insider points out it's pretty shallow when it comes to mac titles and i've gone in there i have to admit to look for things i bought fire watch which is a great game for the mac through steam but you go in there and you see all these great titles and you start shopping around and you realize that a very small percentage of them are actually available to play on the mac and steam link which is this thing that will be great once it gets approved on the app store it will only still only run mac based game swit steam link does is it allows you to use your device or your apple tv to play a game over the net work that actually uses the processors in the gp on your mac and then just kind of almost an airplay style thing puts it up on your apple tv and allows you to say like a bluetooth controller that actually interact with and play with the game on the apple tv so it's kind of like having a consul in your house but the processor is actually your computer and they were steam was rejected i think last week the app was rejected because it had in purchase and it was violating the app store rules for an app purchases so apple's been working with steam they've resubmitted without that functionality in there a note saying that purchases of games are need to be made on a mac or pc and it probably will be approved soon maybe by the time you hear this episode so that is another option but you know everything is still kind of a little bit and this is sort of what the apple cider is pointing out is still this little janke kind of work around especially on the mac so you know mac gaming it's never been a big thing it's gotten better it's now maybe influx it sounds like it's a little bit still kind of tough for for hardcore gamers out there so i'm still curious to get a lot more your feedback on this that's why i'm continuing the conversation this episode so if you have something to say send me an email mac cast at g mail dot com another thing that came up this week somewhat i think semi related to this is.

"The great features and i said it didn't have a mac version you think even alluded that maybe with the new features of of ios porting that we saw at worldwide developer conference that maybe they would put it to mac we'll guess what it's already on mac i should have searched the mac apps or i didn't i went to the developer's website and and in my own defense if you go to the website it's not really obvious that they have a mac version if you scroll all the way down to the bottom you do see a mac with a screen shot and down in the lower right hand corner there is the mac apps store button but prominently at the top of the website is the irs at but so it's the same price for the mac version is as it is for the ios version nine ninety nine us but you can get notably for your mac and many of you wrote into tell me how much love notably on the back so it's got a great endorsement from the mac community so if you're looking for note taking app and you're evaluating different ones that is one to look into and thanks to everybody who wrote in to make sure that i didn't miss that i really do appreciate it another thing i talked about on the last episode of the mac cast was the fact that i have come around and resolve myself to what in days passed i called the new apple order the fact that more and more apps are going to be moving to the subscription model as a way to gain recurring revenue and kind of deal with the fact especially in iowa that they don't have the ability to sell app upgrades discounted upgrades to customers and i said you know i actually kinda like it especially when it turns out what i might spend in a given year is the same amount that i would normally spend on that app when i buy it outright and then because i typically if it's an app that i love and i really use new version comes out there's not even any hesitation i'm just always buying it anyway so i'm paying that upgrade price so you know the ability to give the developer money every month no that they've got a more sustainable stable revenue coming in and they can roll out new features whenever they want i think there is some advantages to the subscription model and i asked for your opinion on it and jill wrote in to share some of her thoughts on specifically why she's not a big fan of apps christians and as she points out what happens when i can't afford the subscription anymore right if you don't pay.

"I hear title games getting ported to the mac again not anything that i think we're not all that used to even with these technologies like open jail and open sale just because of the size of the mac gaming market it's not something that a lot of companies in developers really target we get a lot more stuff on irs because it's a larger platform but certainly on the desktop on the mac we've dealt with these things for a long time but there is some concern in the community that apple forcing developers onto metal is going to push things back in the other direction because we have seen some growth in recent years right it's gotten better for mac gaming and the concern is by deprecating these api's or deprecating support for open jail and open seal that we might be taking a step back so a lot of that was being talked about in the community this week i am not huge gamer so this doesn't impact me all that much so my general feeling on it is that you know games that run on metal in metal to perform much better on a mac i think the experiences are much better on a mac and again because apple hasn't been actively supporting the latest versions of open jail i don't see this as as big an issue as the community may be making it out to be but i'd love to hear from some of you who are gamers specific gamers who game on the mac how do you feel about this because we did just get to the point where we have you know external gpa support and that should be huge for gaming but if you can't get the titles you want because the developers don't wanna build for metal or metal to i guess that's a pretty big deal that could be pretty disappointing i have a feeling though we're still going to get those top tier games we're gonna get the big titles that most people want and it's more of the indie stuff and i like a lot of the indie stuff don't get me wrong but i think a lot of the india any stuff ends up showing up on us just because of the potential marketplace so i think there's kind of balanced there but i could be totally wrong on this stuff shoot me some feedback send me an email.

"Where they can follow you what you're what you're doing on the internet just based on the hardware and software configuration of your computer which is pretty tricky you know when you think about it and apples do anything to anonymously bunch of that data so when you go on the web the the the web services are not going to be able to get that much information about your specific mac like they aren't going to know what fonts you've got installed and things like that and that will help prevent them from fingerprinting new and tracking you that way it's really a cat and mouse game that apple's playing here the mac apps store is getting some updates we're gonna see new categories and we're also going to see video previews coming to the app store we're also seeing some apps that have left the mac apps store coming back bb edit is coming back to the mac app store the barebones sophomore folks are bringing stuff back to the app store and microsoft is coming to the mac app store yeah you've always been able to sign up for microsoft office in the iowa's store but microsoft office has never been available through the mac apps store so i'm guessing apple and microsoft made some kind of deal and also wasn't talked about in the keynote but i think is probably going to come out in the next few days i think apple's relaxing the sand boxing with all the new security they've added they're they're going at the security model i this is my interpretation we'll happened today they're talking all about how they're protecting your data and it seems like they're focusing more on the data end about people getting access to your data as opposed to locking down apps as much and i think that the sam boxing is going to be relaxed a little bit that's allowance some of these apps to come back into the store and they're going to protect your data on the other side of the transaction so this is like katie said we're just recording this right after the keynote and i expect we'll learn more about this next few days but i think there's some changes that have been happening behind the scenes that's making it.

"Am i being too alarmist i i wouldn't limit it to just those three apps because there are other good ones but i i would just say be careful let's talk about it because we always get asked and if we don't address it up front we're going to get asked about it what is our stance on antivirus and anti malware for the mac so where are you twenty teen i don't use either so that that's the short answer the short answer is no the the longer answer is it has been probably more than twenty years since i've run any kind of antivirus software on my mac not since the nine days have i run any antivirus software on my mac that day may come but we are not there yet the the reason is i have found that generally it is not very good that the usually this a situation where the cure is worse than the disease there are generally not many true quote unquote viruses out there for mac that would be caught by an antivirus software and that having an active antivirus software that is running in the background of your mac is going to be resource intensive probably is not going to catch anything and is probably going to make your user experience pretty poor i have occasionally if there is.

"By apple they're you know made for iphone certified or certified to work with your mac and as far as mac chargers go i think only apple chargers are really truly certified to work with your mac so you're probably gonna have to buy or want to buy an apple charger in that case but for phone chargers and stuff like that make sure it has that made for high phone certification and especially if you're buying third party batteries you want to be careful about what you're buying and that's because you wanna have the circuitry that keeps things in check and and good so just be aware of that and you know s four has leaving your device always plugged in you know despite this report i still have i still am of the mind that it's a good idea to cational disconnect your mac from power not have it always plugged in twenty four seven seven days a week three hundred and sixty five days a year if you're doing that then i w would ask why didn't you despite a desktop right you don't need a thing with the battery because you're never taking it out about i think it's good to run the electrons through the battery every once in a while let it discharge a little bit charged backup do you have to do it no but you know i just feel like that something probably worth doing batteries were made to be used not set you know not sit there being a hundred percent charged and unused but that's just my opinion i don't know that there's any empirical evidence to prove that that's a good thing.

"No problem easy peasy right well it didn't turn out to be so simple that's how it's worked for me mostly in the past but this time around i brought it up from my clone hard drive that wasn't the problem held down the option key selected the carbon copy clone dr and sure enough it booted right in to my operating system off the external but almost immediately after booted up and it did take a little bit longer to boot up of course because that's a spinning hard drive usb three external drive that i use in my mac pro has superfast sst that wasn't a problem but once i was logged into my account things started to get really strange i started getting massive beach balls i could barely move the cursor around the the mac the system turn out to be almost completely unusable i was baffled by this i was like what is going on as something on wrong with my backup i ended up trying my super duper clone because i have one of each and that didn't really change things still getting beach balls and stuff like that what i denny fide ultimately as being the problem was one i have been spoiled by the speed of the sst so some of that was just you know running on external spinning drive it was a little bit slower but the bigger issue was that my mac and the operating system was now responding to that clone as if it was like a whole new mac like i completely swapped out the hardware.

"Complex in that device that's not the sort of thing that i i'd be i'd kind of instinctively would want to have happen on the mac only because i know how i know how hard it is to keep a desktop computer running whereas the nas is just isn't really designed to be this interactive device it's been optimized to just be a computer that always stays on that always works there's when you download new software for all of that is optimized for all you want to back up great we will set up here's a backup solution that will automatically keep this completely insane with with a remote backup server or with a usb drive you have here it never it never gets confusing about where you need to what what's offering need to install our high you need to set it up so and i don't know maybe part of it is just complacency it's it's a nice division of labor for me and i haven't seen any to change it yet and also i mean we're gigs it's it's fun to play with anez and it's fun to play with kind of a mac mini that you now do you run your mac mini kind of as a mac replacement i mean you you have screens and keyboard and all that stuff attached to it yeah i i used as a mac mini right now i have two screens on on arms connected to it really good like clicky clack keyboard a stack hard drives a stack of of input devices on it it's like i said it's it's too big of a tangle of stuff to have to take this apart but back together again this episode of the maquis power users is brought to you by gazelle the trusted online marketplace for buying and selling used electronic.

"You can get it for way less money five case still get a great computer evan okay this is the you're the only person i ever asked this question on this show last question it's been three years is there any game and i it pick any apple platform is there any game that i should be aware because i don't buy games until you tell me too apple platforms home did you play fire watch when it came out i was aware of it but i haven't played it yet that i think is the it's not a mac exclusive game um i'm is he finshes elbow mac me say well you can looks up so it's very difficult in this in this multiplatform world like they're they're pretty much they're very very few mac exclusive games so mostly what you're asking is there some popular game that came out recently that also happens to version that runs on the mac even fire watch which was made you know in in cooperation with partially funded by panic makers of transmitted and many other fine mac applications they they helped make fire watch but power watches available for consoles and for pc and also for the mac so they go where the market is you have to it's a abs if you're looking for but if you look for some kind of mack pedigree fire watches what i would suggest if you just looking for a game recommendation in general especially for you know that that i've been may be velenjak what remains of youth finch uh may be available on the mackin steam maybe even if it's not you should play on whatever platform it's available if you can.

"It's not it's not as if the interfaces again reunified is not as if max are gonna become big ipads side i mean i could happen but i think they would happen by the macklin dying off but if the keeps the keep the mac line around if they are determined to keep the mac line around instead of having iowa's expand to take over all the functionality the mac which is the other possibility for the keep the neckline around they will have to find a way to make it a viable platform for a world of people with like you know with thousands are tanovic who made millions of iowa's developers and aaa much smaller and i would imagine shrinking number of mack developers rant so something has to be done about the mac apple has a lot of options in this area and all of them should be able to allow folks like us to continue to use max or things that are like max in a similar way keyboard mouse screen windows like i feel like that can survive any technical transition but this specific matt pack mac platform can't survive without developers writing applications for it and to make that continue to happen apples going to have to add more technological sharing between iowa amac they'll sell the rumor may actually be good for the mack i guess we'll just wait and see but if you can make it easier to make america that would hopefully lead them were mac ups so long as they're they're actually made for the mac and not just ports of something else yeah i mean i i you have to be over the idea of what constitutes a mac out in change i mentioned the ileife apps and iot apps were nothing like the best mac apps and classic mac os the back the best mac apps available for your mack to see i or whatever did not look like any of the live apps it's possible to change what the definition of a good compelling mac application is that can continue to happen so i think it is possible to make an apples tried a few times to make a mac applications that brings some new ideas a lot of them bring ideas injuries that he is from iowa us not all which are particularly appropriate so maybe they're not successful but the apple should keep trying.
