"Behind this seat behind the wheel of chicken. Essy's race car the CAMAROS. Were you as surprised as everyone else seemed to be to get? This call. Home is gone. The wheel behind the tight. Yeah you know It was unexpected but I guess probably because I wasn't really thinking about it. You know a whole lot. So yeah I mean unfortunate circumstances for Kyle Bounce back. He's a super super towns of driver a great guy so but yeah when they called Certainly it was it was unexpected and after thinking about a little bit talking Katie Bug Lot. It just seemed like a great opportunity. The timing is good for us. Is this one. That decided was too good to pass up. So I'm looking forward to get in the car here in a couple of weeks and getting back to work. I'm really excited about that. It wasn't one of those deals where you said. Who is this really or anything like that? Was it no so Max? Jones called me. And I've known Max for years and years is the GM it rows for awhile. He's been chip for a long time so I talked to him all the time. So you know. I talked to chip but yeah the second time the second time I call them back. Definitely check to see how seriously was about about how serious they were about it. I can before running farther but then after. That really happened pretty quickly. I mean I. I didn't WanNa hold them up. Obviously needed to get driver here. Now with the race season get started here pretty quick again and if I was GonNa do obviously needed some time to get all my stuff done and get as prepared as I can possibly get for this without really haven't tracked time which is going to be tough so you got a whole new group to get to know different cars different system different rules all that kind stuff so just need to get as much time as a kid to try to be as prepared as we possibly can be you know when we get there shops are starting to open backup now in the big news is. Nascar is announcing that we're GONNA come back may seventeenth at Darlington with a race on that Sunday the following Wednesday into Charlotte Sunday and Wednesday. Going to be a lot of racing in a short period of time and very limited practice opportunities if any. Is that going to be a situation where you're going to have some rust knock off. I mean everybody will. We've all been kind of quarantined at home for a month. I mean I'm sure there will be out on Hawkins. Sit here and say that yeah. There's GonNa be no rust and you're gonNA drive into the first corner and everything's going to be perfect and just like loss. I certainly hope we get some kind of practice any kind of track time. We'd be better than none. Not just for me but probably for price turning out do so. But I mean if they don't have to make the most of that be careful to get going and then play catch on as quick as possible and didn't work at Chad and getting Carter kind of kind of driveway. You hope it drives and you know put forth the best effort he can learn from that and gone back there and trying to better the next time so so yeah either way we can be some track. Time would certainly be helpful. Chad Johnson the crew chief currently on the car he had worked with. Kyle Larson. Now you'll work with them and your former teammate. Now new t made I guess they're in Kurt. Busch guys together at Rush Benway. You kept in touch with him. I've kept contact with Kurt. A little bit. I mean not being attractive. GonNa talk to him as much. You know trade tax here so yes a couple conversations with Kurt you know before I did it and certainly that was one of the attractions. It's only a two car team having a teammate. You know that you're familiar with that. You can trust that you can speak the same language That's GONNA give feedback. That's GonNa you know. Make racing and priority and work as hard as you can like all. Those things are really really important. You know you don't WanNa feel like you're going there just you and your team. You're doing yourself so you can have somebody to lean on and talk to especially when there's only one. I mean that's a really important part of it so I would say that. That's a big attraction and certainly part of my decision making process was having Kurt there. I'm really looking forward to him again. He was a great teammate. First Time around really helpful. I'm looking forward to working with them again. Obviously you wouldn't consider it if there weren't some things that you didn't enjoy about the job in the first place and I imagine that like most jobs there are some things you like and some things you don't like but when you think about coming back and you decided you wanted to do this. What was something that you really missed that you wanted to have back in your life. You know the I think most people outside it'd be like Miss Driving Race cars most. That's not the part. I really miss the most. It's really being part of a team is the people it's You know spend an hour or two of the shop and starting it up for a seat in working under chief in meeting. Nope New People and no that you're part of team that's trying to accomplish great things in your link in that chain and you're going to be leaned on for certain things and just the Camaraderie and the team work and just being part of that just going on to beat the best guys that there is in go there and put an effort into work alongside those people with a common goal. I mean I'd say that's the part certainly that I missed the most and honestly you know with this year with Artie. Being the middle of May the world kind of being in a place that is right now not really travel much of being here. The potential schedule was attractive to me too because after after all those years and be gone every weekend from February to the end of November and then having all these kids at home and You know it's hard to miss the. The school plays in organized forks and the kids dances. Like all the different little things that you miss was really hard and last year. I got to do all those for the last year and a half to hit every one of those. We've just had great times Right now there is no kids for some. There's there's really nothing to kids have been able to do except for behold with us home school and play and do all those things and I don't know when that's going to get back to normal so if there's ever time for me to go back racing back to work and do it. I really love to do right right. Now is the time because I think that the schedule is going to be a little bit. Besides the obvious and being a great team a great opportunity and all that I still think that there's probably less time away from home at least in the short term than there would be if it was a fulltime schedule the whole year long speaking of the whole stay at home. Quarantine thing and the home schooling. Have you turned into Professor Kenneth at home now? So Katie. I'd say is the teacher. She wasn't here and the kids would be in big trouble. She you know we have Fourth grade third grade and in kindergarten. Katie's does a lot of kindergarten teaching in I TRY TO HELP WATCH OVER OTHER TO CAIRNS pretty much self sufficient sufficiency needs some help on some things and and I'll be honest things help on. I need help too. So you know it's it's been really good. I mean if there's a silver lining in all this that's going on at least for US I can say it's been. It's been great for our family. We spent so much time together that we really usually don't get to. Do you know the girls all have different activities in different sports and you know how it is today. Everything is so spread out. There always just so busy. So they've been able to afford them. Available spent so much time just together just them and learning more about each other and learn how to play. You know I'd be lying to say that there wasn't some pretty big battles here last last couple of weeks but overall they've been getting along really well and like I say I think we've been learning a lot about each other just finding different creative fun fun things to do together in addition to that understand you've been keeping in pretty good shape you've just been sitting on the calf needing cheese puffs right while you've been running marathons and stuff. Is that right well? Last year and I trained together and we ran the Berlin marathon at the September in Germany and that was both of our first marathons and So we did all that together. We stayed over in Europe for week and kind of looked around. I've never been to Europe before. I never have done really any international travel really all never traveled for Rosa Israeli Racing so So we had a really good time data. Good summer with the kids has traveled all over pretty much kind around here around. The United States had fun with them and then So we ran Berlin together the month after that I ran the the New York marathons well and we're in the middle train for London before. All this stuff happened in. London got cancelled. That was gonna be our second trip. We were kind of both training together. And Kinda Kinda get ready for that and Until I got cancelled about a month ago. Wow it's amazing. It probably seems like one hundred years ago now though. Doesn't it with everything that's going on? Yeah it does the time. The time is Kinda Kinda seems like a long time ago for sure. I feel like Everybody's been been cooped up for quite a while so hopefully you can finding it back to the racetrack. Even that's GonNa be a little different than what we're used to in play. That will be the start of everything getting back. Play more toward normal. Sooner than later what do you expect to be? The most challenging thing is going to be the lack of time in the car that everybody's going to be going through a little bit before you get right back into action. Yeah I'm going to say the most challenging thing if we don't get practices just going to be that stall the little things Kinda Kinda behind the scenes that you don't see you know to get used to you know the steering feels. The brakes does a seat right like all those little things now talking your cheek. I don't understand your language and the urgency in kind of what you're asking what you're saying and vice versa. So there's all those things that just kinda come with time together come with experience together and the field for the car and all that if we don't get to practice or forget it very limited practice that's going to be very very challenging to get gone at least for the first first week or two assault were NASCAR is granted. Both you and Ryan Newman play off. Waivers for different circumstances of course. But are you confident that you and this team in this car can contend for one of those playoff spots? Well I mean that's a that's a tough one to answer because I never even ran a lap in those cars and I haven't raced for years. I mean not to be real honest I mean I realize that the learning curve is going to be really steep. I don't know how long it's GonNa take me to get up to speed. I don't know if that's GONNA be ten laps or ten weeks. I don't know so. We certainly hope it's not going to be ten weeks..

"Best. That's Hercules tire DOT COM Hercules tires. Ride on our strength. Welcome back to out loud. Joined now by my good friend. Steve Post pit reporter extraordinaire and dirt track racing expert as well on the inside. And you've got a busy schedule even get some action this weekend right. Yeah absolutely. I am so fortunate that I get to do what I love to do. I love the NASCAR stuff. I love being on pit road to them are on. It's just it's like you just like being busy. I like being busy. That's for sure. So that was my dream gig as a kid to be on the road and to do car. Radio with them are an and so. But I do a lot of short tracks stuff. And so this weekend. I'm actually going to Syracuse New York indoor auto racing. Tq MIDGET CARS. Three quarter midget cars on a concrete track. Basically inside of a hockey rink. Oh my goodness full contact full action and I'm kind of like the James Bond stuff. Why don't we actually have? We have a penalty box. A We have a penalty box so someone gets stray the Jayaram Halsey cooldown zones hockey. You go to the cool down zone and I come over and put my finger at you and I and I love the the GIG. I'm the I'm kind of ringmaster. I'm down on the ground so like you were pat right. Yeah should if there's a fight intern number two. I run over to turn number two and do play by wally. If there's an interview over here I need as it's just so much fun at ties in so well I mean I love love. Love being on pit road with them are an and we're coming off a west coast swing and how great that was so. I'm very fortunate. But then this week at Syracuse and then back to homestead next week so I love the writing. I think you're right. I think I love being busy. Busy busy pays better than board. Is he does. And I'm a guy that likes to travel to. I you know people have said you know how long you've been doing this. How long you want to do this. You know we get to that stage and I think when you get to the stage where travel starts to become a not enjoyable I think there's where you're like. Okay maybe we need to rethink this whole thing but right. Now I'm all jacked up because I'm going to Syracuse New York. I'm GonNa hit Dinosaur Barbecue. I'm GonNa hit Southern Tier Brewing. I'm going to get some indoor racing. I actually have a five K. Up there I'm going to do And I'm going to have some Hoffman hotdogs. So I'm I so I love travel obviously and with two daughters growing up and getting you out of the nest. You're a little more free up right. Yeah I mean not that. That's a bad. No I mean I've lived. What do you know? And and I'll share this woody okay. You're so close to you and I are. I'm not scared. I'm not scared to share this with you when my wife and I first whom had the big blowup I lived with. Woody okay. So what are you a couple of years and his wife Sandy? Thank God so woody and I go back and so it's a deep deep friendship. Would he knows my story. And I've spent the last fourteen years as a single dad joint custody but but I have a lot of impacted my daughters in my daughter's life and they're with me more than more than probably anywhere else at so it's been great but now you either eighteen and twenty one and all of a sudden. It's like they're wanting to do their own thing. Yes all those things that all things that I wanted to do. Well it started weird. Okay and I know. We're way off the racing reservation. But it's kind of a life they. It started weird. It was like as they got older would do everything when my girls okay. My life was my girls and okay and I- unapologetically proud of that then. You should really proud of that. But then like they start to get older and they start to have plans on a Saturday night. what am I going to do okay? The first the first time the struck me okay. It was December during the off season. Okay and it was like they're going to both of them. I had a Saturday night with nothing to do with. It was the weekend in early December that the College Football Playoff Games are the ACC championship the Sec Championship. And everything else. I said I'm going to get a steak. I'M GONNA get a bottle of wine and a baked potato and I'm going to grill the steak. I got a great night alone and I did. I had one of my will tragedy or are all of a sudden reality hit the next week. They were both gone Saturday night on. Well I don't want to do the same thing now when I don't know what it's great but yes girls get older. I get a chance to do a little bit more traveling and have some. I've always had fun but it's really neat. I'm I'm I'm like a guy on the personal front and on the business professional front. I've lived a dream dream Dream Wife. That's for sure. And how many people get to actually say. I'm so fortunate I I love being dad and I love being a reporter and announcer for all the racing events for sure. Let's shift back to that racing side for a second because one of the things. That's most interesting. We talked about wing nation and your dirt track experience. What are some of the things that you have seen on the dirt side that they do well that might be workable or adoptable on the NASCAR side? Are there some things yes there are? I think the biggest thing to me and it's a challenge and I don't envy I don't envy the spot. That NASCAR is in on this particular one. I think people's attention spans have I know. People's attention spans have shrunk. It's a right now. Society is a right now society. We stand at the microwave and tap our foot. Because it's not going faster. Okay so to me the wing like a world of outlaw sprint car show is perfect two and a half hours how laps boom let annoys downtime qualifying. A LOT OF NOISE DOWNTIME. He races in between them. There's downtime chance to hang out with your buddies chance to talk. There's the dashers be made it so it's short and total length. Two and a half hours. Okay and you have time to socialize in the middle of it. Okay so I think that is really really neat and I think that's a challenge. We have a NASCAR and I don't envy him because the minute you say. Well maybe you're five hundred mile race needs to be a four hundred mile race or all. My Gosh the robbing us of our mileage and people don't like change and and and and sometimes less is better. You know sometimes less is better. I really show business. Leave him warning more than one more. I think I think you know we. We rented a couple of years ago. Pocono went from five hundred or four hundred S. Oh my gosh. Rigging their hands. I Want my money back for my hundred miles. Great come to find out a four hundred mile race. Pocono is better than a five hundred mile race and we're gonNA find out what a three hundred and fifty mile race implement. It was like this U of m two of them exactly so to me. I think I think that's one thing that the short trek world has done so well is that is that attention span thing. Downtime is downtime. Things thing you go you go to a sporting events with your buddies or your family or your wife or your spouse or significant other in a NASCAR sometimes the volume even under caution. There's competition you're exactly but it's it's not a social event that were maybe you're maybe you're isolated a little bit and we live in a society where we want to be connected. I love what NASCAR's doing with the connectivity. Have to try and that's that's great. We are in a society now that loves to be connected and love to chat with each other racing electronic says the good two way radio systems that you can talk to your buddies with during it but it's still structurally. I think it's still a challenge. We're talked about downsizing the season from from February and October or wherever we end up there but I still think those events and I don't know the answer I don't Envy Nascar on it because the minute you talk tough decision. That's it's tough decisions. I think the right people are in place to make the right decisions to get this to get this thing. But that's one thing from the short-track original question I love about it. It's a social event. It's an event where you're don you go into the pits. After the race. You have a beer with your favorite driver and you still aren't up all night long doing it so I think it's a shorter event and that that socializing time period in the middle of it is is is really pretty cool. Let's talk a little bit about Atlantic this weekend. will be there for the truck race on Saturday afternoon at one o'clock Georgia two hundred will start off on Friday with practice at one thirty or the RV outdoors truck series. But I really think that is a cool experiment that Atlanta started a few years ago. And I think it's been really cool to have the truck race and the race on the same day Saturday. If you're not a cup SNOB and I'm not. I'M NOT SAYING Cup. Snob in a negative way. Okay if you savor and enjoy every NASCAR race xfinity or truck race If if you love it all that's the best day of the year that's a great value. I love that day. Okay and and in. This series racing has been so good this year. Atlanta such good racetrack truck series. Racing's good we. Actually that bounty thing going on with a truck. I mean there's so much good that day to me is is is if you're set aside the Cup world. That's the best day of Nascar for me because you get both xfinity in the truck series all in one day one doubleheader little downtime going back mother the chance to run out onto the concourse grab. Grab Sandwich. Grab a beer grab a soda. Grab a water chance to hang and say hey. What did you think of that? What did you think of that? Oh come on. We gotta go back in the next race. Has I absolutely love that day? Atlanta I love. They did it a few years ago and I love that they still do it now. Because that's one of the best days in NASCAR every year as we run through the schedule here. We mentioned. We'll start off on Friday afternoon. One thirty eastern time truck series practice Followed by the race on Saturday when we when we get to this race. The Buzz is all about this bounty on Bush. What do you think about that? I I like the buzz. I'm still struggling with the hand wringing about we've got to the Cup guys out of the truck series and we have a bounty that encourages cup guys. Come into the truck series. I'm on my mind still hasn't figured that out of it is is most people get upset when it's one particular precisely their cup guys the the like you're bringing the truth into well. This is not. This is not a cup series issue. Kyle Busch issue. This is a kyle. Busch issue I want mass as a cup series issue. But it's a Kyle Busch so I take their. We can't Stand Cup series guys in there. I take that that we can't Stand Cup series guys and I'm like well wait a minute. We're encouraging work. But those guys are there to be Kyle Busch. So that's why there's no. I think it's great. I think I would have an and Kevin Harvick. I'll say this about Kevin Harvick and I respect Kevin in so many areas and Kevin Harvick's motive for this is one hundred percent pro truck series of former team owner in this series. He came from. Yeah he put Kevin Harvick on the map. And so he is Kevin Harvick's motive in this is one hundred percent pure gold right on point and in Marcus. La Mona's gentlemen afterwards. I if I had to tweak it a little bit I'd say the bonus to anybody that can be Kyle Busch But I I. I'm fine with it. I think it's great. I think it's exciting This week Chase Elliott and Eric Jones and Brennan. Putin is Jones this week. Brennan Paul and John Hundred John Hundred and then the one that Kyle is worried about is homestead next week. Kyle Larson at homes. Who kind of started this whole thing by Tweeting Cherries when he in Vegas? Kinda neat kind of fun stuff. I like it what I WANNA see. Though I want to see the bounty go unclaimed and a truck series regular in Victory Lane Is that would be nice so But Yeah I think it's an it's certainly. We have spent the last two weeks in in in media availabilities and in this sport and on Talk Radio in the sport talking about the truck series and we rarely get.

"And who better to talk about that then? The points leader Austin Hill for Tory racing enterprises joins US Austin. Congratulations on a strong start to the season. But now it's been a couple of weeks off or you chomping at it to get topic at the mid to get back at it. Hey woody thanks for having me on but Oh Yeah I'm definitely ready to get going I know I know all the guys in the shop or chomping at the bit They've been really putting in a lot of effort on you know we built. We built some new trucks and off season That we felt like would help our program and You know we we're just. It was good to have that you know a few weeks off just so they can kinda tidy things and and really. Just look over some things and make sure everything's ready to go so when we do have this stretch of three races back to back we're already goes so But man it. It sounds good here and you say that. I'm the point leader and hopefully we can keep it. You guys won four times a year ago. Finished fifth in the final standings solid team. You put up a solid performance. What more do you want to accomplish? Obviously the championship is in your sights but specific things that you'd like to see the team or you improve on here going forward. Yes so looking back at last season. One thing that we've really felt like we didn't do a good job at one stage point We definitely feel like we need to get a lot. More stage wins. I didn't get any stage. Wins last year except for homestead or the stage? One and two point there in that race so I feel like stays points. Were really crucial. And kind of the deciding factor on US making into the final four or not we You know we had had a bad race at Martinsville gotten in Iraq and then being. We're just a little off and we didn't have really any points to fall back on. So I felt like ultimately that was kind of the SA- deciding factor Getting the wreck obviously didn't help us at Martinsville and then us being a little bit of Phoenix didn't help either but You know I felt like I felt like Brett. Didn't have that great of a Performance in the round six and I felt like he had some point to fall back on that. He accumulated throughout throughout the season. So I felt like that's Kinda something that he was able to fall back on points and we didn't have that luxury so that's something that we definitely want to look at this year. That's kind of our number. One goal is to get as many stage wins and as much as points as we can each and every day. Let's talk a little bit about this weekend. At Atlanta everybody loves that TRACK THE ROUGH ABRASIVE surface. But all the buzz seems to be about this. Kyle Busch bounty thing. You regulars feeling kind of left out here or what I mean. Yeah we're we're obviously left out a little bit and I think what it does is for for me and my race team it It kinda lights a fire under her story racing because now we're kinda getting overlooked and You know the big talk is about Kyle Busch and Chase. Elliott this this coming weekend and we WANNA be that guy that Kinda spoils the show and and you know uh leading the race and maybe then the running second and third to us You know we're we're not going to go quietly. That's for sure we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA do all we can to doubt. Run THOSE BOYS I I. I love having the cup. Drivers come down and run with us because if you WANNA be in the Cup series one day those guys who are going to be running against so I I love racing against those guys But you know them throwing up a bounty and all that it it's cool and it and it you know it's cool for the fans and all but it Kinda likes to fire up under US Because it kind of makes us seem like we can't get the job done and we can't outrun These guys and I feel like everyone at HR. And I feel like myself we. We can go do it if we put our heads together and we have. We bring a really good truck the racetrack and we do everything right. And we make you know minimize all the mistakes Throughout the race and You just got to perform to be able to outrun those guys. It's interesting that you say that all the years we've done this show and we've asked a lot of xfinity guys and truck is you. WanNa raise the cub geyser. No every single one said yeah bring them on but you look social media and fans are like. Oh No. Get them out of the series. They're stealing the thunder and all that but all you racers say yeah. Bring THEM ON. We want to run against them. Yeah I mean like like I said it's if you're going to run in the Cup series one day and that obviously probably the majority of everybody in the truck series and xfinity series they wanna move up the rankings and You know it it. It just makes it makes it fun when they come down because you get to see where you're maybe missing it a little bit where they might be just having that little bit of advantage on you in something that Kyle. Busch is really good at doing diagnosing his truck. He knows exactly what he wants. He's been he's been at all these numerous times he. Has You know thousands and thousands of laps around a lot of these race tracks so You know he already has a little bit of an advantage on. You're going into the weekend. Because he has so many laps around that place. He knows what it does during practice. If you're practicing in sixty degree weather and then you may be race at night time and you know forty degrees. So he knows kind of what the tracks characteristics are. He already knows what what he's looking at in a in his truck and I kinda think that's why you see him so successful and he's always upfront in these truck races he just knows exactly how to diagnose these trucks and somebody like myself or anybody. That's a rookie or You know maybe they've only been in the truck series for one or two years. They're still learning all of these tracks. You you go to a lot of these trucks. Only one time of year so You know each each year that you go to it only one time then that next year later you're kind of looking back at notes and trying to figure out you know what you did last year to be good at that track and I think that's kind of where they've cut guys have a little bit of a leg up on you. Yeah I think absolutely right. Let's wrap up with his Austin. I think a lot of folks are familiar with at least the name of your team owner. Because it's so fun to say shaky Katori but he's kind of in the background type of guy. He's not a real forward type of guy when you see him at the track what's he like in person Man He he is such an awesome owner to work for He's so laid back he. He doesn't really He may never gets into you. Know what we're doing. He doesn't ever question if there's anything we need the shop and he knows that it's going to be a performance enhancer. We we do all. We can To get it if we can get it and You know he he just he just sits back and he just he just lets us do our thing And he worked so hard each and every day I mean. There's there's Times that I come into the shop and I'll walk into his office. Say Hey to him. And he's he's sitting up in his In his chair sleeping straight up because he he's just worn out because he doesn't so much traveling he he goes to Japan. A lot and He's traveling back and forth and he his time change kind of gets thrown off all the time so You know you'll peak in to say to him and he's just sitting there. You know taking a little nap so he works. He works tirelessly. I mean that guy. He he does so much for this race team and he's constantly looking for sponsorship and You know he he does. He does a lot he does a lot. That a lot of people don't realize and And I'm very very happy to have the chance and opportunity to know him and To race for everybody in this business travels a lot but he he goes above and beyond a lot on the last thing. You mentioned Sponsorship. Who's on the truck this weekend quickly Yeah so this weekend. We Got United Rentals on the truck. They're GONNA be on the truck You know I think about seven or eight more races this year for the truck so it's been really good having having them on board and hopefully we can get them in victory lane. Say Julio Austin Hill the point leader in the RV outdoors truck series. Congratulations on a strong start. Good luck in Atlanta. We'll see you there. Yeah thanks for having me on you go. That's Austin Hill. We'll take a quick time out when we.

"Still at the limit the tires we're lifting going through the corners at these places and you get to you. Get to a Michigan or e California. Even we were lifting. You'd run wide open for a couple APPS. I think the that's where the was strong out. There is that they could run wide open longer than most people could But even at that once you got ten laps in your left and through both ends so We do have a lot of downforce and we've got a little less power and we used to have but we're still tire limited And when you get to where outrace tracks where there just isn't any grip left in the asphalt and I'm not complaining. Sure let me make sure. That's the the the old asphalt puts better racing. I think when we get to places at the asphalt just doesn't have any grip left in it the Atlanta's the homesteads the California's the Darlington's how you how you continue to manage your tires. And and try to keep the the good in the tire as long as possible brings comers and goers makes makes for race tracks that were. You'll have somebody who takes off in the first five laps but he's GonNa come backwards in the last fifteen so Really exciting racing for you as the direct line of Communication to the driver at tracks like that. What's the most important thing you have to stress to them? Just just to continue to save. I think you know. What are you stress too? We talk during the week. About what what? We need to be focused on it and Ryan's done a great job with at this so far this year and and we'll continue to work on those things but You know it's just patients not letting your emotions get you because usually when you get emotional you get more aggressive and then then you end up beating up tires more so Just staying focused on on the big picture and where we're the long run speed potential. We'll come back to you WANNA front. Thanks I taw Gordon. Our financial crew chief segments presented by money lion. The world's most powerful financial membership. Money.

"Back to 'em out loud joined now by Dylan. Well trump. Mr In radio a podcast host radio broadcaster a dog. Dad's brace yourself you name it. You're doing all you kind of busy right now. Aren't you jack-of-all-trades? Yeah master of none coming off auto club speedway we just had your interview with Adam Stevens and this is going to be something completely different than what we've seen. They got the the new short-track package even though Phoenix a mile in length to give the cars a little more that we were lacking with this package that helped the intermediate tracks. What are we expecting IT PHOENIX? Well I think it was interesting in that interview there with Adam you know. He kind of alluded to the fact that this is new for everybody and that even though even though they have data and things to kind of take into that weekend It's it is going to be very new because of that package so I'm as interested to see as the next guy you know kind of how it races and and you know what we can expect for the championship race. Obviously you know later in November. Yeah Adam said they're all going to be trying some little tricks but you can't afford to completely go off the reservation if you're going to be trying to win this race this weekend. Yeah and that's the balance right. That's that's what makes it difficult as you want to try to be as prepared as you can be for November. But it's only march so you gotta you gotTa take it. You know one race at a time and make sure you can get to the championship. Four and and good way to do that is by having success this coming weekend so interesting you know I. It's you have to find a middle ground somewhere because you don't want to completely put yourself out to lunch But I think there is some value for sure and and trying things and hoping that they play out and pay and pay off or pay off for you come November we had the season opener at Daytona course and denny. Hamlin wins that on a Toyota. But that's an apples and oranges situation. Base those kinds of tracks every week but then Joey Logano goes and wins Vegas. Alex Bowman goes and wins out in California. Are you surprised that the Toyotas haven't been as strong as they closed? Two Thousand Nineteen. I am a little bit and I think it's I think that's that's the comparison right. It is how strong they were in twenty nineteen that they have been quiet this year and probably not up to their standards as a company. So it's interesting because Chevy has kind of made the opposite turn right. They've kind of become. They become a factor again where they really quite frankly. They weren't last year so Camaro. Yeah exactly so it's there's a lot of competition and I think that I think that's good because I think it's gonNA force the Toyota guys to to dig a little deeper and not rest on their laurels. Too much and and figure out how to compete with the Ford and Chevy. So it's great you know. Three different organizations have won races in three different manufacturers in the first three weeks of the year. So competition is a good thing. Is that a little too early for them. To be concerned you think or are we more at the kind of scratch your head a little bit stage. I think it's probably the probably the latter I don't think that You know like you said Daytona is. Its own thing we've been to. Fontana we'd been to Vegas so three different completely different race tracks so I think that they're probably not panicked yet but I think that they They know that they need to step it up for sure. Let's talk about your schedule a little bit. You've got the RIP defense podcast with everybody's favorite heavy Tyler Burnett. What's what's coming up on. Rip The fence here in the next few episodes. Yeah and today. We're actually recording. We've got Buddy kofoed who's a a young racer from California who is kind of starting to To compete in the Mid West mornings racing the national midget series for Keith Kunz. Who of course is produced Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson Rico Abreu? It's sort of like the Hendrick. Yes he keith. Kunz motorsports is the team and Usak midget racing. So buddy is his new driver this year so going to kind of try to introduce him to some fans and people that maybe don't know historian. When do the podcast drop each week? Whenever Tyler at its which changes from week to week so anytime now yeah try to get it out either tonight or tomorrow. Which is Wednesday going to be a good good? Listen for sure. You're racing calendar. What's that look like? You did Chili Bowl your teammates with Christopher Bell in the off season. What's on your calendar for the rest of this year? We're we're working through that right now. I mean as As everybody knows it takes takes money so we're trying to raise yes. We're trying to raise some of that. Our own to put a schedule together to to go back and race with Chad Boat. Which is the team. I raced for last year so hoping have about the same ten racer so schedule definitely cap it off regardless at the start of next year at the Chili Bowl. Where do you see that going? Where do you want it to go? My racing yeah at this point. I think it's honestly just a hobby. You know. Everybody has a goals racecar driver. When you first start you know to to be a professional race car driver that that will always be my dream but I think that has kinda passed for me just because you know. I'm fortunate to have a career in broadcasting in that obviously Takes me away from the dirt tracks on the weekends because I've got to go work work at the big tracks so if I can make a living doing what I'm doing now and still have the opportunity to race. You know five ten times a year. That would be perfect for me speaking of taking away from when you're on the road away from Janet. We mix dog debt earlier. She's even got her own Own Handle what's up with that. Yeah hand and my girlfriend finally caved and made her made her own page. So she's funny. She's she's a full four ball of energy. She's a puppy still so she's eight eight nine months old. Can't get enough attention. Just always wants to Tile Zapping. Tyler is just like. He's a big puppy. Yeah but now she's great and it's it's been it's been a fun adventure for for Hanoi and I to have her and Become dog parents together. So it's it's been fun. What's The instagram handle? It is Super Planet Janice Super Planets that come from I believe West side story is so Hanna. Hanna took it from that Let's talk a little bit about some of the news of the day. The big thing this week. We're testing the next GEN car again. William Byron is behind the wheel. I think this is the fourth overall test of what we're going to see in two thousand twenty one but everybody Kinda went. Whoa WHEN NASCAR said we're GONNA go away from five lug nuts to a single lug nut in the center. I think that impacting well reading release. You know it doesn't sound like fundamentally at the court is going to change the pitstop that much me as a pit reporter. I enjoy hearing the air gun screaming hitting all five lug nuts so I will miss that part of it but I think that NASCAR has done a good job at least on paper of kind of presenting it as a As a good alternative. And Hey the pitstops not gonna look that much different you know it's not going to the choreography similar adage core. It's going to be the same so which I think is good on them for realizing that something that's important to to Nascar fans that they liked that aspect of it so Yeah Big News. You know because it's obviously departure from from everything in the past but it's you're going to change it. Now's the time to do it right. It's all part of this new wave in this new car and to me. It's not as big a deal. Get everybody making it out to me. But that's what twitter. He's GONNA lose their mind. Exactly how important you think. This new car is going to be overall because the goal is to make it more friendly to what manufacturers are selling to consumers in the show rooms and they want certain things because the technology we're using now is based on stuff from the sixties. Yeah well and I think that you know regardless of how the fan the fan has changed over the years. I think there is still a very strong group of manufacturer alliance amongst ask our fans so the more that you can make these cars. You know the more you can make. Chevy's really be Chevy's the more you can make four early before I think that resonates with people It resonates with the manufacturers themselves. Because they you know they probably would much prefer seeing a car. That really looks like their own car out on the race track so I should we spend all this money for something that we don't try and sell exactly so I think there is some value in that for sure so Again KUDOS TO NASCAR because I can only imagine the kind of feedback things that they've gotten from all different corners of the you know the people that are responsible for making these decisions And everything that I've seen so far it looks. Looks like a beautiful racecar. It sounds cool. Looks Cool. I think it's I think it's going to be an exciting exciting time next year And even later this year when this car gets rolled out should take us into a new era for sure. Let's finish up with the schedule for this weekend at Phoenix raceway. What are your duties at the desert? I'll be pit road on Sunday for the Cup race in. I believe in the turn for the extent of the race on Saturday so Love going out there to Phoenix and You know especially this year with the championship being out there. You know as we talked about a lot of emphasis on this on this weekend. Both for the xfinity guys in the Cup guy so fun weekend. We open it up on Friday with. I practiced with Van. Shield five hundred. That comes up at three thirty eastern time Friday afternoon and just as an aside. You've worked the practice shows. What can folks expect from those? Yeah the practice. Shows are a lot of fun for us here at margin because obviously we don't have the visuals so we have to to really Kinda dig in and find things to talk about. So I enjoy him. You know because you sometimes can talk about some things that just over the course of a race on Sunday. Just maybe don't make it on the broadcast because we've got to talk about what's going on the race track so this practice shows are always a lot of fun and the banter between the guys on the pits in the guys upstairs is always entertaining if nothing else especially if you're in the in the in the track yourself when you have a scanner that's half the fun listening to US second practice is also Friday. That's at five thirty eastern time then on Friday night at seven o'clock our first Arca race that's going to be fun and we'll have several of those throughout the season. You follow some of those guys pretty closely. That should be a fun show. Yeah and that'll be. That's an ARC national race. That'll that's a big race for them and excite. You know excited to get to to do some of those races this year. No the Arctic Geyser They always put on a show. And it's it's the future of the sport so it's great that The motor racing network able to kind of showcase. Those guys when they're coming in on the ground floor and then we get to watch them kind of progress through the trucks and Xfinity cars and then you.

"The best. That's Hercules tire DOT COM Hercules tires. Ride on our strength. Welcome back to out loud. We're joined now by Kim. Kun My former co host on the NASCAR. Live free ratio. I Miss You. Let me say that right off the bat. It's been a little lonely without you but I'm glad you're here today. Let's talk a little bit about the season today. Only two races and so far. What has jumped out most at you to start the season. I think how well penske drivers and teams have transitioned with all the changes that they made over there basically playing musical chairs with everything they possibly could and right out of the Bat. I feel like both Ryan Blaney enjoy and Brad Keselowski have all been very good and very strong both weekends that we've been at the track. I expect the same going into this next weekend and for me. That was the biggest price because again when you change things you never know teams are going to react. People underestimate how important those personal relationships are and how much a team really is a team sport. It's almost like football. Where the coach and the quarterback all the attention but all the other guys make it go to absolutely and then another thing that stands out to me Hendrick motorsports. I think this could be a year where we see. All four of those cars. Get to Victory Lane I don I don't Wanna I don't WanNa change with you. But they've shown speed. I think the new body on the Camaro is working well for them. I know we're only two weeks and I think auto club is going to be very telling if it continues to be a trend of them being fast and running up front or if it's just maybe a fluke or the first two races. I don't know I I think you're probably right. I think they all will have a very good shot at getting the victory lane this year. You mentioned Auto Club. You're going to be out there this weekend. On pit road opening up with practice. Now give folks that idea if they haven't listened to our streaming practice coverage what they can here on those shows. They can hear a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun on the practice shows. But we're covering all the teams we also kind of we then the story lines of the weekend whether it's on track or off track stuff you'll get some fantasy pigs usually jeff Is VERY ADAMANT ABOUT US. Getting our pigs in for the weekend. No you love to do stuff like that. Sometimes you'll get a little bit of history especially of Winston Kelly's out there working the garage or one of those practices and then we always try if we can to get driver interviews and or crew interviews sometimes even an interview with somebody from goodyear or somebody from the engine shop for our team so we always try to get some different voices outside of to add perspective to the practice shows and if nothing else you'll know where people are running without going refresh refresh your at your desk. Yes and you'll know if something went wrong because that does happen from time to time in practice. I hate to say it but I've had care center duty during practice which is usually very unfortunate kind of a downer. 'cause you're talking to somebody after something bad has it wasn't even in a race which. I guess it's probably. That's a better better time to have something go wrong. Then during a risk for sure you've been out there quite a bit southern California California in general because of all the other things you do with with motorcycles and NASCAR and Indycar. What are some of the things that are in that specific that you would have on your must see list must do list? Oh goodness actually took a trip earlier in the year with my mom to Santa Monica. So it's not that far from where we are out at the racetrack and supervision or what was going on. He turns sixty hour so we took like an art trip together. to celebrate her sixtieth birthday but Santa Monica was so laid back compared to every other part of southern California like Los Angeles and Lax. And that whole can be a little Santa. Monica was laid back and peaceful and anything. There is fine. We went to Venice beach and walk. The beach watched some of these skateboarders. Because they've got skateboard parks so that was kind of a refreshing getaway. So if you have the opportunity if you're out there for the auto club race in you're willing to drive a little bit. It's not too far just to kind of catch your breath Santa. Monica was wonderful out of the way from every all the hustle and bustle sure A lot of folks are familiar with glass case emotion. It's been a huge hit. You and and Ryan Blaney among others on the show. What can we expect this season? I hear that you're going to have some. Some new guest hosts along the way. Yup We're back this season actually leaving the studio right after I finished with you to record the first episode. And it'll be a lot of the same we might see some other faces cycle in in the Third host position see but Ryan will be back He's out West right now so Not going to give away. Who might be on the show this week? You'll have to stay tuned but yes last cases back which the fans have been clamoring. I wearing I love you. I love to support but it's nice to finally be in studio to record it into put something out there so they can get what they want now for folks who aren't familiar with and haven't seen it yet. You should be watching if you haven't but it's not you get Ryan on and go now on lap one eighty two. What happened there? That's not how this goes. It's actually very much the opposite. We do talk some racing and if there's something specific that happened on track whether it was an incident or maybe Ryan victory we do talk about that or situational stuff where it's like man. We can't ignore this but it more comes naturally we're not gonNA just force a storyline. That comes from the racetrack just to talk racing. A lot of it's more about like pop culture lifestyle news of the weird. What's happening in our lives? Weird is really cool. You gotta get into that yes. Everybody needs more weird. Weird is good it certainly is now in addition to that as we mentioned you're doing some indycar stuff still. I'm assuming and are you doing the motorcycle stuff again this year. What's what's your schedule looking doing. The indycar off the grid show again this year. It might have a little bit different. Look that's all day so you're just you're just for that. You're just hinting mightily. Lots of hints. So I'm very excited for that. No flat track motorcycle coverage on the docket right now but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be watching. Because a man they they are so much fun to watch the flat track riders. Yeah Yeah I know that when you first started you said. I haven't done anything like this before you came back going. Wow Yeah I mean bar banging their the some of the toughest motorsports athletes out there and it's just so fun to watch them so I still very much keep along with the story lines that are happening in that. Motorsport and I'm starting to wonder if you ever sleep or eat with all filling your schedule but locally in the Charlotte area you're on WCBS in the Mornings. That seemed like it started off a little here a little there but now they they probably have a room for you. There was like a little appetizer. A little snack of me here and there but when I can when I'm not traveling for Nascar or anything else I co host. The eight o'clock hour which is a fun kind of topical our and then I very much fill in for the news reader. Who has to wake up very early and read the news from four thirty to nine? But that's not like permanent. That's just like billing in here. Sleeper. What are we talking about? Somebody's on vacation or tranquilizer darts with your So yeah not recently but it keeps me on my toes and traveling for you know a Marin or any of the other things I'd do it kind of keeps me fresh and gives me a purpose. He's my schedule busy. Busy an understatement. For sure let's circle back now before we wrap up to auto club speedway a worn out. Surface there a lot of speed at that track. It's going to be a little bit of a different animal than what we saw Las Vegas and certainly Daytona as we move further into the season. What things are you going to be keeping an eye on over the next few races and specifically this weekend? I'm really excited about auto club like you said it's one of the older resurfaces we go to it's a two mile track so it's different than both. Daytona in Las Vegas. I hope we see some of what we saw in Las Vegas. Though because man I was surprised isn't the right word but just so excited about how good the racing was in Las Vegas. The restarts crazy we saw you know greenland passing. We saw racing and so I hope we see some of that this weekend to at auto club and I'm just looking to see if Joe Gibbs is going to position themselves kind of out of a little bit of a whole I feel like they're in these on Vegas now obviously Denny Hamlin went out and won the Daytona five hundred but I think you have to separate daytona apples and oranges tone. Then the season starts in terms of getting to really look at a thermometer of how teams are going and Vegas there were. No Toyota's Toyotas period not just jobs in the top ten which we haven't seen that in a very very long time so just seeing if they kind of rebound Greenwich trucks did have a Good Vegas. Ron had that incident but kind of see how they rebound because cobb Bush won the article embrace last year. Kind of seeing where they shuffle out and then I wanna see some good stuff from Jimmy Johnson this weekend. I think he's right there knocking on the door. I think he is. I think he and cliff are gelling not that. They weren't gelling before but they finally got into a rhythm. We saw great speed from them in both the Daytona five hundred and then in Las Vegas top. I'm finished and then you look at Jimmy. He's a six time winner at Auto Club speedway and Man. If he could just game if he could just have a walk off at auto club it would be so cool and I think Shannon the girls are doing the commander so there seems like there's going to be a lot of good synergy there so I'm very much looking forward to auto club to see if what we saw at Vegas in terms of people that were up front and people that have been fast if that trend for all those different storylines continues going to be a lot of fun to watch We got a schedule coming up this weekend. On Motor Racing Network at Auto Club speedway Friday afternoon practice starts at four o'clock eastern time. Kim will be on that first. Practice session also Friday and other practice session on the Cup side at five thirty eastern Saturday Cup series qualifying. Also Saturday three thirty eastern time. The xfinity raise the production alliance group. Three hundred CAM will be on pit road for that one on Sunday. The auto club four hundred two thirty eastern time Kim again on pit road for that. I'll be hosting the NASCAR live pre race.

"In the world's most powerful financial membership money line here we roar this week. We had a chance to catch up with Jimmy. Johnson's crew chief cliff Daniels Dylan. Welsh found him at Las Vegas Motor speedway to tell us about auto club speedway this weekend first of all just logistically speaking for getting out of Daytona and getting everything prepared for not only here but all the West Coast races. What kind of challenge did a Monday night? Race present actually presents a big challenge for all of us in the garage with the preparatory or do we need to do to get our west coast cars. Ready to get sent out Obviously the first season. There's always last minute item. So you're checking over adding or updating on your cars Fortunately everyone at hitter. Motorsports did a great job of getting our cars prepared ahead of time. So Tuesday for sure was a long day but once we got the cars loaded to come here to Las Vegas. We felt really good about them and now like wiser are shop is doing a great job of getting everything. Ready for California and Phoenix coming up and looking to Fontana. You weren't in the crew chief role there last year. What kind of challenge do you anticipate that presenting or what are you kind of keeping your eyes out for as we go there next week. California's such a cool place for for us in the four day just the history of the track for what it means to Jimmy. The success over the years so the challenges are being away. What you need for the straight line speed versus the the group in the corners. The track does have off but obviously it's a two mile track and there's a lot of inherent speed you need to have built into your car so there's a lot that we've been working on to make sure we're prepared and ultimately wants to get on track we'll find out the bumps on the backstretch something we always talk about their How do you compensate for that or can you in any way compensate for those? There's a few things that That you can adjust with with your shocks and you're right heights and how you approach your your springs in your bump stops. We've done a lot of work last year. Trying to improve. Not only the bumps on the back straightaway. Which obscure there that you mentioned. But there's also a lot of bumps in the corners to so handling over the bumps premium. Managing Your ride height control is definitely premium again. All of our engineering staff. Everybody at Hendrick motorsports in a great job of last year's of developing shocks and springs and and things correctly to help in those areas so I will be pretty well prepared with it. Being Jimmy's home track his last race. There as you mentioned what?.

"Loud is presented by money lion and by Hercules tire. What he came joining you again for our Auto Club speedway edition as we get set the head to southern California and who better to talk to about that then a California guy himself the man who finished second at Las Vegas Motor speedway the driver of the number twenty one Ford Mustang for the weather's Matt Benedetto Matt. Congratulations on a strong. Start to the season and now You go back to your roots a little bit after thank you. That was a good way to start off. You Know Daytona side Starting off year. Vegas I kinda normal race of the year I guess and then So yeah cool way to start going back going back to the home state now for you. Kind of lose track of how big California is when they talk about home state. You're from the area called Grass Valley. How close is that? The Auto Club speedway is that I imagine very different from that particular area right. Yeah for sure I grew up in northern California. Grass valley was probably about an hour away from The Sacramento area in the foothills Sacramento so Auto clubs probably I think Some of my family usually drive down there. It's about a seven ish hour drive so pretty far south. Yeah but I actually had a lot of family that You know lived in La so it's still a family down that way. No you live in North Carolina now but a lot of folks talk about the difference between nor cow and so cal northern California and Southern California. How would you describe the difference? Yeah they're completely different work so you know what people are like. Oh you grew up in California. Was crazy busy up like do. We grew up in a even smaller town than I live in North Carolina. Hickory figuring out there so it's It was pretty Nice area. There really really quiet And basically it was just in the foothills there so very very small town. So that's kind of what I've been a accustomed to growing up and that's why even moving hickory North Carolina people are like. Oh you live in a way out there hickory. I'm like no you have no idea. Well that being said how does a kid from grass valley get hooked on racing? And how do you make that work around your area that got you interested? The interesting story but So my dad was actually big into baseball. Nobody in my family was into really racing cars and stuff but you know it was about the extent of it So we He was passing through the channels on. Tv BY NASCAR. And I made him watch it. And at that time I was riding a four wheeler and a bike and I was wide fricking open on every single day. So clearly they were like okay Motorsports bachelor he likes to go fast. Yeah made him watch NASCAR every single weekend with my mom and my dad was like what the heck do you want to watch that for? Then it became our thing. We watch it every single Sunday and then you know they became do so it just became our our thing in a friend that I played baseball with On our little league teams My Dad was like the trophy ceremony. Like this is my my little Jeff Gordon. He likes baseball but love racing. And well it gets just so happened racist cycle AF speedway where kyle grew up racing. Both come out and check it out and that's how I got started. That is a really cool story. You move from from not much interest in the family to baseball and into racing after that and now here you are driving for the wood brothers. Does something like that kind of make you pinch yourself at times ago. I can't believe all this has happened all the time. Just a fan of the wood brothers that love studying the history you know the team in the in the sport and all their famous drivers.

"That's what speedway is all about learning what your cars like Learning how how good it is an old tires how much speed that it has Sucking up to a big pack. Are you in a chance to to lead Elaine. And how well does blueline so yeah. There's a lot of things that every car is a little different every situation's a little different so you build that database up from practice and qualifying the first week Obviously the duals on Thursday night and then a few practices before the five hundred so before the five hundred. You've got an idea of how aggressive that I can be an ultimately you try to do what you can to set yourself up for those last twenty five thirty laps gotta gotTa be present to win right. Yeah you gotta be there. You mentioned earlier. You enjoy the short track racing big picture wise looking through the season I understand. You're you're not running the full schedule. But what kind of a difference do you think this new package might make a short tracks super speedways because the whole goal of what we've got now how was to try and help the racing at intermediate tracks for the most part. It did yeah. I think that it accomplished exactly what the industry wanted. I think the the drivers had a little bit of push back in the beginning but once we got out to Atlanta in Las Vegas and California we realize that during the races the the faster car still navigated their way up towards the front. You still led to lift some and And the fans got what they wanted. You know tighter action the TV partners and all the broadcast partners like you guys. You saw a lot more side-by-side racing racing a lot closer You know at the top four five guys at the end of runs and so I think those are all good things in order to make the cars all similar throughout the year. Sure so the teams and have to spend a lot of money They made that kind of a blanket rule package and what we found was it was too much downforce for the short tracks. You didn't have enough tire. Hire fall off because the the downforce in the race car it overcompensated for the the lack of a grip in the tires. You were still able to drive off the corners. Your balance wants didn't change a whole lot. You didn't have a big Delta from early in Iran too late in the run and that's when you have passing at the short tracks so we don't have to worry about. He's going almost the same speed. Nobody canoe try to well. We don't have to worry about bunch and everyone up in Bristol But we do have to work on that from Michigan and Californian Pocono so I I think that it was great that that Nascar said hey you know we. We've got to make this adjustment. The race team said okay. You know we're going to do some Some agreements where we don't have to be in the wind on. Oh quite as much as we've been in years past Nascar froze some of the Rd that the teams were doing To kind of help themselves because the team's they're they're their own worst enemy sometimes because they they they wanna make the the best car out of their stable they WANNA make it fast and so they spend a lot of money and a lot of resources to make those cars faster but but if everyone's playing and off the same rules it's a little bit more even for for the top two or three teams and the middle. You know fifteen twenty cars so I yeah so less downforce for the short tracks. I think it'll be back to how we had a couple of years ago. We have a lot of fall off at Martinsville in Richmond. The road courses and so tired will be important tire management will be important and I think that that dirtier that we started to talk about a short track will not even be a conversation this year. Now that leads me to my next thing because as you have sort of a different GIG since you're not full-time racing part of the reason they didn't go to any extremes trying to help the short tracks and road courses was with an eye toward twenty twenty one when the next Gen car will begin to race full time. And you're going to be involved with helping with that some right. Yeah so this really the the best of both worlds woody. No I get to race a little bit and then I'm GonNa help Ford Performance and in some of their development on the next in Awkward Mustang. So that's a car that were extremely proud of an excited as a the whole industry is to see what that next evolution of race cars of the American stock cars that were racing here. Kind of what. That looks like an so Nascar's made some pretty pretty bold moves on Upgrading some of the technology in our cars and and hopefully Learning off of what we've done the last couple years with these Arrow packages and they'll to make the right decisions with our next aero package for twenty twenty one And there's also some opportunities for some engine adjustments that will better suit our current OEM's and some new potential OEM's That they WANNA come and be a part of NASCAR SO Y- I'm going to get to work with Ford on some of their modeling and and part and pieces development. All men in that car gets on the race track this summer and Kinda helped get up to speed. I spend a lot of time in the simulator building some Arrow models and some tire models because it is a a lot of different parts and pieces. it's a different tire and wheel combination a lot of different suspension part. So yeah. That'll be fun that that'll feel like I'm still at the tracks still involved in making a difference in developing race trying to make our Ford's faster so what we learn what will help all the Ford Performance Teams Games and then I'll still get to race a little bit here and there and hopefully you know go run some other series that I haven't had a chance to run in years past. The truck series is a lot of fun under a few races. That may fit my schedule even going back in and running an art series races at some of the short tracks. I've really enjoyed. I still have a legends car My out and run a couple of races out at the summer shootout here in Charlotte or Atlanta. So yeah my my schedule will be a little more open on the racing side of things and then Being full-time Dad and and trying to be a good husband will allow me to to be home. A little bit to kids would be grown up before you know what you look back and go wait a minute. I missed it. Everyone tells has made that and had the last few years I've started to believe every now it'll be a good opportunity for me for sure when we look at this car. I was talking with Richard childress last year. uh-huh believe it was at Talladega. And he said something that blew my mind he was he was talking about. How much different for the good? This new next Gen car is going to be. And he said you know the underside. The undercarriage of our cars are still based on a sixty nine chevelle now granted. There's new parts different parts and all the engineers and things do what they do. But that's the underlying going into nearing of it is a sixty-nine Chevelle and that just blew me away. Yeah and that's a good and bad because it has kept the sport fairly simple but it's it's almost made our sport a little isolated because around us we've had a lot of technology and we've implemented at some over the years we had you know if I brought into our cars took the carburetors operators off a few years ago we've got you know digital dash and some. GPS boxes that allows the fans to watch some of our driver inputs that they can see NBA part of A. Obviously there's technology that's changing around the world and NASCAR's got a really hard job because if they just open the floodgates I it's really going to be an arms race on on. Who can afford what type of technology and? I don't think that anybody wants to see you know four teams and sixteen cars take the field for the Daytona. The five hundred. And that's what it would turn into if there were no guidelines and restrictions to use the technology that's available but But also I think we are isolated in that fact that if I roll underneath my nineteen sixty four pickup truck. It's got some truck arms rear end housing just like our car. Does it's going to take the green green flag at the Daytona five hundred so I think it's time to To make some adjustments and make these cars More cool. You've got a lot of young fans that are growing growing up seeing you know their their new Ford Mustang or the corvette or Camaro or whatever vehicle. They're buying they want it to be relevant to the car that we're racing and you know. This is the the stock car series the National Association for Stock Car Racing. So I think that I think that's a good move and and sometimes moves like that are scary because it's different and there are a lot of changes but I think it's time to do it. How important is it to to have it? Be More like as best you can with a race car. That is decidedly like a streetcar on steroids for lack of a better phrase to have it more like what the manufacturers which you often hear. Oem's are selling every day not only with what we've already gotten in terms of manufacturers but in attracting new ones I think we live in a world where these manufactors they are working extremely hard to make their cars very cool you you hop op into a car from two thousand and there wasn't much of a cool factor with with a lot of that into a new sedan. SUV or or pickup truck. And everything that you touch that you feel the character lines the body lines technology in the engines ecoboost motor. That's in my Ford F one fifty you and you know it's unbelievable. That's the same engine that's in my Ford. Gt that one Lamont two years ago. So there's a lot of technology in all of manufacturers cars and and I think that we need to to apply that some to our sport and and it keeps US relevant. I was down at the NASCAR. INSA twenty four hours tone a few weeks ago and you can visibly ably sale see on a Ferrari passes by win a porsche passes by one and Ashton Martin or BMW. Don't have to steer forever to figure a fresh so that's cool and MCI has done a great job of balancing the power to where all of them are fairly equal Obviously some years you have one. That's a little better than the other. They do. A pretty good job of of maintaining looking at the data to To offer those balance of power shifts throughout the season so I think that's something that NASCAR will continue. You'd have to keep a close eye on because you don't have one manufacturer just totally run away and win twenty five or thirty races during the season but I think that if we had four or five manufacturers the cars had their own identity their own engines. I think that would build a better fan base for for everyone who wanted to watch and it would give us more passion and to To work for our manufacturers and our cars and be proud of that I think some of the credit for that what you mentioned with the series and how identifiable they are has to go to Jim France right. Of course his family has been at the top of NASCAR since its inception how. How comforting has it been have a guy like that with that kind of experience and that kind of Worldview worldview now taking the reins at Nascar what you saw last year and what? We're expecting this year. Yeah Jen's got a lot of passion for our sport and gyms that guy kind of sits back and he listens is a lot He doesn't talk a lot. I think we all can learn something from June but a sharp and he's got a invested interest in the success of NASCAR. You're his family is still controlling a NASCAR race tracks now and I think that they've doubled down on their bets. Certainly from the outside looking in I think it would've been easy for them to put some other people in charge and go hang out on the golf courses or other fishing boat but I think that there at the race track you Ben Kennedy around a lot and so I think that the future of NASCAR is healthy and GM has a A good outlook on on a lot of different sides and so he can He can guide the the sport and certain ways he can work with the manufacturers. I think he's a he's a good guy that you'll see walk around the garage. You can stop them. Say Hello shake his hand and talk to them and it's good that he's there and on the grounds and he knows he knows what the field is inside the garage. And I think that's important. Another interesting development is the schedule schedule changes not radically different in terms of new places but the order of the racists has changed and you know you kind of get that routine and you've been around the sport long enough to where almost with your is closer to okay. We're going here next. And they were going there but now. That's jumbled up and the talk is next year could be even more changes that we haven't seen in in the past. I'm a fan of the history of our sport in in keeping some things the same I am. I'm not a fan of of changing things just to change but I think we've talked about Out Changing the race cars a little bit. I think those are important. Obviously the safety innovation that we had throughout throughout the mid-2000s those were very very important. Strategic changes changes that made our sports safer and I think the schedule was this that next item in place. That has gotten a little stale. I think we got too comfortable. That every year are we left a toner and we went to Atlanta or we went out West and we came back and we ran you know Bristol and Martinsville in March some of those racists this it doesn't make a lot of sense and and so I think that again with with everyone in the industry with Bruton Smith and his team an SM. I got the guys at Dover motorsports group they all all got together and said Hey. Here's what's best for the series for the sport you know we may take a little bit of a hit on one market or another but but we're going to move this date or change change this race and.

"New season of empire and out loud presented by money line. Hello again everyone would. He came back with you and we are headed to the Daytona five hundred a little bit later on in the program. We're going to hear from David. Ragan as he makes his appearance in the five hundred even after saying he's stepping away from full time driving then we'll hear from Alex Hayden one of our co anchors on the motor racing network. But first let's talk to the front row of the Daytona five hundred. Mike Bagley is on scene and he spoke first with Ricky stenhouse junior growing growing up in olive branch Mississippi. Did you ever think you would be a pole winner for the Daytona. Five hundred. No not at all at that point at some point in my racing career I just I wanted to race for a living. I didn't care what it was but you know starting to come down here. To the speedway races specially with Brian Pattie puts a lot of hard work a lot. A lot of attention to detail and I knew that if I kept him as my crew chief at at some point we'd have a shot at Daytona. Five hundred pole You know he qualified on the pole with him and and two thousand. Seventeen coming over to JB doherty racing. The hard work that they put in. I mean Mike. Kelly go into the wind tunnel with our cars nonstop. You know the guys in the body shop. They'd cut a body off if they needed to Ernie and they got a good leadership from top to bottom of Jodi and Tad and and Ernie and it's just cool to see everybody working together and you know this this off season I felt like hey you know we we might have a shot at this knowing that Hendrick powers been on the front row this thing and winning polls for a long time and you know we we were with the same engine program Ram same bodies and I knew that we were have shot at so. It's pretty cool. So what is it the clicks between you and Brian. I don't know we both want to win. We both Like you know. Pay attention to details. We were both. OCD when it comes to the organization like and things a certain way and we've just clicked ever since day. You WanNa know different than Mike Kelly. A nine to have both of them in my corner You know switching over to a new team has been pretty beneficial this off season so looking looking forward to continuing that obviously this is just one weekend won qualifying run but I do know that. They're working just as hard on our vegas cars as well so I think this. Is You the things that come for for our coverage dory racing team and look forward to you know enjoying this for a few days before we gotta get into the Dole's what about you though so you just spent eleven years at Ross benway racing and this is an opportunity for you to hit the reset button and basically start a new chapter in your careers. We hit resell We hit we hit it with a with a stamp right there. I think you know no different than than Brian and Mike Mike. Mike Bennett. Rouse Fenway. A lot longer than I had and we feel like we both got things to prove in the sports still and you know. We've we've won. We've we've done things but you know you're you're only as good as your last race last season season and and so we got lots of proof and our cup career and definitely as things go our way sometimes and then. We've we've struggled at times but all in all we're here working hard and it's a good way to hit the reset button for sure. What about the race team? You come from a larger race team to now a team that a lot of folks you'll feel homegrown team. It's a smaller team. That some of the big conglomerates how do you fit into that and is a good fit for you. It's a great fit for me. I grew grab racing family sprint car and run run and go-carts with my dad and you know the family atmosphere there. It's you know they they didn't they. Don't just hire the worker. They hire the family and we do a lot of things together and look forward to continued and you know that relationship with with all the employees at the company. And you know it's It's pretty special. I wish Jodi Tatra here They stayed at home this week continuing to work. There's always working hard on our next dill's for for keeping this race team going and looking forward to talking to jody little bit later this'll be your ninth Daytona five hundred. We obviously wish you the best. A lot of fans do as well to seems to be a good time for you and it's off to a great start. It's off to a great start. y'All know I love speedway racing We put a lot effort into it are fast cars definitely help throughout the racist making moves and we still got a lot to learn this. This Chevy drives. Now's a little bit different than than what I've been used to on the speedways but we'll get it out in for sure. Is there an art to speedway racing. Definitely an art you you you pick up on things you learn earn things and I think you're always learning every race. I mean we. We were out there in our practice session and I was learning obviously switching cars. Learn in an you know a lot of what this car is capable of and what its characteristics are but you whether you're learning about the draft or learning about your competitors. I I feel like you're always learning and you keep those things in mind. All Right Picasso goal ever have it like Sunday. Thank you so stenhouse shows he can still get it done at the super speedways. Can he wound up in the front on at the end of the Daytona five hundred that remains to be seen but mike also caught up with the other side of the front row. Alex Bowman well. There's there's something about a Sunday afternoon at February in Daytona tone of Alex. Bowman it's been it's been quite a run for you. As far as five hundred qualifying again you put the Ada car on the outside of the front row your thoughts about getting that Great Star for the Great American race it's always great you know the Daytona five hundred such a big event so to be on the front row. It's really neat. Obviously you WANNA be one spot better. But I think the mullet was the Was the deal breaker there. If I would have grown a mullet like ricky out about a half a tenth better but that's all right we'll take second we just gotTa be one spot better in the race and I I think we have a great shot at it. These Hendrick cars are so good down here. Hundred horsepower under the hood. It's it's great. Our speedway cars are always amazing so excited to get going here in the clash later today and then come Sunday. We're we're going to be up front about the dynamic of this race team. You're back with Greg. Is this year you WanNa race last year. Seems like you guys have a lot of men coming into this race season. Yeah I think so. We've we've got some new faces and everybody seems to be working together really. Well Greg and I are getting along great. He keeps asking me how how to cheat up his box. Stock to go run mill bridge. So we'RE GONNA WE'RE GONNA cheat up his box dot forum like like we do the midgets for Chili Bowl and it's a great relationship. We have a lot of fun. There is an art to racing at Daytona. And there's an art of using the draft and the side drafting. Is that an ongoing thing that you as a driver. Try to fine-tune your skills also because you're pretty good I would say restrictor plate race or taper spacer racer now. Yeah I mean I. It's always changing right. The draft is always changing. The bodies of the cars are constantly getting tweets there. Obviously we have a new camera body here and and it's quite a bit different so how the draft is GonNa work is always going to be changing and you're always going to have guys figuring out new tricks and you're trying to figure it out and keep up. Keep up with them. The do obviously is the final shakedown. And then he got a couple more practice sessions but it was that you've got the speed. Obviously now there's one more thing to check off the list. Let's the execution of the great American race. Yeah for sure. The doors are tough when here on the front row. Typically we're obviously really trimmed out and here for qualifying but we'll see what it doesn't Dole and then go from there. Thanks Mike. There's your front fraught row.

"Three laps in the president sat in and then at some point we had a caution or or or went to a commercial. I can't remember which now because it was a long time ago and we went to commercial and a little bit of time a couple three minutes past and you know the president said goodbye to everybody. I assumed that he and the secret services packed their bags and headed head onto their to their next stop and me being a wise acre slash loud mouth that I've always been known debate during the commercial tallies know Barney Hall but the president does a pretty mean throw turned one. "To one one fries in Nascar racing that eluded him the most over his lustrous career and now coming down the pit lane will be the champion of the nineteen ninety eight Daytona five hundred Dale Earnhardt all the pit crews all of them out on pit Lane Salud Command who has accomplished so much in this sport except when its biggest race. It doesn't have to answer that question anymore after today. Twenty years hard work. I'll tell you for a good day I'll tell you we've got a lot of great race fans a lot of people behind me. He'd really all week long. So this is your wake. Richard chillers has got one heck of a race team. I'm talking about. Everybody Works Richard from thirty one to three truck. DOC everybody all his three-team buys worked so hard for this. I can't believe we wanted to finish fast. We raise some hard and we just good racecar car. It says a lot for the team sent a lot brawler sponsor. Everybody works so hard a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Something L. M. R. N.. Anchorman Allen. Desperate in your honestly don't remember a lot about it except the outcome. I was still having a hangover. The nine hundred ninety race when I was out on the backstretch and there was a half a lap to go and it got away from it and the latter counting down man could this possibly be and then there's a caution gonna come on well at that time race back to the caution washing so he still get from where he was. When that yellow flag started waiting back to the finish line and then follow the pace car all the way around own without running out of gas or having a real fall off his car and to actually win the race? So I remember just thinking in my head. Don't call the election in until it's official. Circumstances are what they are described them accurately what he hasn't won it till he gets back here and the checkered flag is waiting not yellow in the white black and then obviously the aftermath is just awesome. Having watched how fool that race had been to him. There was no way to not be overjoyed. Rejoice for him but people had experiences with Dale earnhardt minor Germany really great and to see his reaction winning that race and everyone's reaction to him. Winning eating at race was still probably one of the coolest things I've experienced in sports the Truman all lining up to high five him. which kind of like the? That's the lasting image. But then when he got out of the car in Victory Lane and standing there and that smile was bigger than his mustache beaming and his fister in the Air Aaron. He's shaking his arms up and down to see the joy that it brought is is Is a great memory to for the Richard childress racing crew. This record and played played out so many times before a dominant day for the black and white good wrench number. Three Chevrolet had gone by the wayside. Do a myriad of circumstances for Winston Kelly the the victory placed him amid of pit road celebration of epic. Proportion is kind of an after the fact because we had gotten so used to getting so in our vividly vividly remember it road watching the through celebrate and watching day. Oh come out and doing his own. That ended up looking like a three three and then coming down pit road. And the entire crew every crew member coming out in congratulating and it was almost like relief belief in victory lane as Jim Phillips was but it was almost slight for those who had watched him come so close. You didn't have to be an EARNHARDT EARNHARDT fan to note. That was a big moment in. We try not to be fame's do love big moments and I have to say appreciated the significance of that moment but I also thought this is the first of what now. We'll be several when you think about the one and straight firefighters it's like is just always that little something didn't work out for five hundred dollars waiting for something happens as like it deserves it you know. "Didn't need an introduction but he said Moyal way you talk he said you talk real real good. He he said. Have you ever thought about working the Daytona five hundred network. I didn't even know the headed Daytona five hundred network at that particular time because green wouldn't with word for man. I didn't know a whole lot about the business. But anyway he said they're going to have an audition Daytona on Monday. And they've invited several announcers around the country to come down and audition for a spot that will be open. He said I'd like to come down there and do that. Can you do it. And I was almost embarrassed to tell him that I didn't have the money to come to Daytona and and Miss Miss my regular job but I finally told him that and he said we'll just come down there anyway and he said what do and we'll give you one hundred dollars bill and he said you come to Daytona and you do the qualifying races a Saturday races and the Sunday races and he said if we like what you do You keep two hundred dollar meal will work out some kind of deal to do all the races and I said we'll appreciate it and as it turned turned out everything that happened the first fifty laps in the Daytona five hundred happened up in terms three and four to three cars hit the wall. One car went upside down. Landed on top of another. And and I've got to be Cana- Mike scared at that point because everything was going on and I just wanted to make sure missing. Apparently bill liked what he heard word and he called me a little bit later. Bob Montgomery was irregular announcer at time and big bill come said they told him you got a job. So that's sort of jumped into it former. Mr In President David Hiatt recalls the strength of Barney's influence helping NASCAR reach a broader audience. He was one of big bills confidantes aunts because Barney was also a good friend with some others who were in the sport at that time. Junior Johnson Kinda brought Barney into the sport they grew up and lived and virtually the same part of the country and western North Carolina up in the hills and junior Guy Barney interested in racing. Barney been around it a little bit but junior really brought him to the table so junior and big bill and all those folks were the ones who were getting nascar off the ground and Barney had voice. Barney was already the radio station and he was willing to go through the coverage he would go out from the little radio station. He worked at an Elkin North Carolina W IFM and he would go out travel and he would do some races and do race coverage and he would come back and he would take all the stuff that they sent him nascar and and tone in any racetracks PR department. He'd make continental of it for his radio show and they had great respect for that because they saw that he believed in the sport and that it had a future for the.

Joey Meyer, Kansas and Kevin discussed on Motorsports Monday

"On the Cup side race, two of round two of the playoffs for the trucks. It was elimination day, and we've got a lot to discuss on both of those before we had to Kansas speedway this weekend, what he came alongside Joey Meyer and for a while, Joey. It seemed like we had gone back to the future in the nineties, the way the racing style turned out to be at Talladega. It's been a long time since any of us on the roof or in the garage have seen a wood chipping thrashing by one team. So dominant qualifying all four teams in the top four. And then realistically working together and really popping up that bottom line where nobody can do anything with those guys for the entire afternoon. The only enemy that two of the forehead was too much air in the old fuel tank, and that relegated them to a poor finish. But obviously Eric Merola and an Clint Boyer rebel to hold tight in their positions with the dominant dominant performance by Stewart, Australia. If I'm the other team specifically the fourteens I'm almost embarrassed because that was such a thrashing of speed and raw power and maneuverability and workmanship with the teams, they've really just dominated from start to finish at the end. And again, the only thing it took two of the four hours, a lack of fuel. We've seen in the past a Toyota teams, specifically the Gibbs teams try to gang up like that and use it to their advantage, but not as effectively as what we saw yesterday. Yeah. The gives cars in the past with Martin tricks, junior, adding the fifth car. Those guys had worked well together, but they didn't have the raw speed. And that's really what we saw yesterday was the speed that they had on the bottom lane. It didn't matter how much you try to gang up on the middle and high lanes. You simply couldn't get enough speed to overcome their raw speed by themselves. They were able to pull the pack four, five, six tenths quicker than anybody else. Namely the two car got out front. We were running in the nineties in a lab night. You're talking time no time it's at and then the other. Teams wants to Stewart. Haas cars got down. They would pick up five, six tenths of a second. And that's just a dominating performance by those guys. So kudos to them really puts the two car in a bad position, a little Joey. Here's pretty upset because Kevin, I guess I was about to ask you, he run out of gas. He's very sad. I'm sad, Big, Joe little Joe. Very sad. Now, the two cars in a predicament. We have to go to Kansas essentially, excluding any other catastrophic issues. By some other teams, we have to win that race, and that's that's a bad place to be an after a decent season. We've had our team may Joel Gano finished in the top five. So those guys are pretty much moving on, but Ryan Blaney and the twelve car in the two car really, really have to go to Kansas with some high performance. We see we see ourselves air and just we're just trying to. That's our finishing order right there. And the guy that
