How 2 Skiers Conquered Yosemite's Half Dome

"Valley, 8800 FT. Above Sea level is a rock formation called Half Dome in the 19th century, a report said. The granite landmark was so perilous that it quote Never will be trodden by human foot. Well, today, Half dome is a popular hike for thrill seeking climbers. Yosemite resident Jason Tor Llano has always looked at the massive rock with a feeling of wonder. I went to school, right New 70 Valley next to you, Somebody falls. Um and you look up you somebody from the playground is a little kid. That's where the big thunderstorms come from. And when it snows, it just gets packed with snow and And it's just always been attracted to have them. But Torre Llanos attraction to half Dome has always been tied to another interest of his skiing since the very first time he clicked into skis. From that moment on, I just looked around and Kept seeing shoots our ski able to this age. When he was 17 Tor Lana went climbing with a friend on half dome. Remember walking down the cable's going? Wow, I bet you this thing's cable, and it turns out he was right this year, Jason to Orlando and his friends act, Milligan finally descended. Half dome on skis mean climbing half dome is dangerous enough descending on skis. It's a slab of no anchors. So avalanches occur all the time off that. And if you fall or get caught in an avalanche, you're gonna fall off the South face 1000 ft Cliff, so they scouted the location a day early. We walked up there the day before, and we slept at the base in a tree. Well, we start a little fire and kept warm for a few hours. So we're so cold at three in the morning. We're like okay with mice will go to the top. We got it in perfect conditions. This time, it was like a lay an inch layer of ice with about 3 to 4 inches of snow. Trevino and Mulligan weren't the first to descend Half dome in the snow. It's been done on skis and on snowboard, but their trip was special. Well made Our stand a little different is we? We skied the cables with no ropes. But then we see it all the way down to near Lake So another 4000 plus Vertical feet. Achieving this lifelong dream has not stopped to Orlando from eyeing other slopes in the park. Every time I go to Yosemite. I look up into the mountains and just there's so much I want to do. They're still that's Jason Tor Lana, who skied down half dome into the Yosemite Valley last month.

How This CRO Builds Start-ups with Both Enterprise and High Velocity Sales Teams

"Mark thanks for joining us today. As a way of getting started gives a little. Bit of background on yourself eight brian. Thanks for having me on the program background. I love talking about myself. So you might have to cut me off here I am currently the chief revenue officer very silicon valley like term for a a data company called h. g. data. I live in the san francisco bay area. And i come down to beautiful santa barbara For a couple of days a week which is where we're located and as far as being in sales. What's what's you specialty in. Well there there. Two things that i that i spent with their two type of companies that i've spent most of my career with here for the last decade more turnaround situations where i've been brought into tech companies. That have stalled. Started to flail little bit and on the guy that Gets out the shock. shock pads and tries to rejuvenate an entity. And those are those are fun when when you can do them well and then i've also recently gotten a bit addicted to pre revenue tech startups. These are two or three guys sitting in a basement with a whiteboard. They often don't even have product built yet. They've got an idea they want to disrupt the market. And i'm brought in as the go to market guy like let's figure out what we can monetize how to do it. And then let's get after it get some revenue in the door go gets around funding and then hopefully get it to to be erected or see. Let's let's start with the turnaround. Because that's kind of what i've been dragged into for the last five years. What's your approach on the turnaround. So you going into a place there. Stalled at I don't know what your space made. Five ten million dollars. The investors are anxious. They can't raise another round. What's your approach. Well i think there's there's two frames that i typically look at in one one. I usually do pre engagement to to determine if i'm going to get get involved. Which is what's the external market conditions. you know. I have been lucky enough to work in spaces that are growing so that is just tech in general but more specifically the last couple of years has been serum extended. I did do a stint in healthcare it. That was tacked. But i probably miss read. What's happening with healthcare from the outside. That looks very appealing but internally not so much so the first is the external environment is this arena where entrenched players are have gotten a little bit lazy and buying cycles are such that that new entrance can break in in make a difference so that's the external environment and based on what i've said i've generally focused on environments where i think that they are right once in turtle is often find that that it's just business one one stuff and i have been around long enough you know. I got out of college in ninety one. Next week is my forty th birthday and so i've i've seen business cycles and i been in the bay area over over twenty years so i certainly have seen hype curbs in bubbles and bus and i think that has allowed me to go in and call. I don't know if i if i gave you the longer. Version that if you if you'd have to bleep it. Pc see i've seen when folks are deluding themselves when companies are deluding themselves on either their product market fit or their go to market strategy or the original vision their differentiation of strategy disagreements between senior staff or investors board and staff and usually between those those bullets i just listed. There's two or three major disconnects that when you're living and breathing a startup you just lose perspective and by being the new guy on the block. I can actually call out those things relatively quickly. I'm also an east coast guy so even been california now since ninety three. I tend to be very frank and direct And i think that that candidness allows people to to call out the elephant in the room. That people have been avoiding for some time. I don't know if

How the pandemic is affecting states unequally

"Of the characteristics of this virus economy as we have said on this program. I cannot tell you how many times is how uneven its effects have been on people black and brown and low income. Americans do in way worse in health and jobs and just getting by than whiter and wealthier populations are uncomfortable. As to how they're doing depends on what industry they're in and on states some of which have been really hit by this pandemic less revenue from income and sales taxes and higher virus expenses and some of which states that is doing all right so as the senate takes up. President biden's relief bill this week. And it's three hundred and fifty billion dollars in aid to state and local governments marketplace's mitchell hartman starts us off with a tale of several states. The pandemic recession has delta significant blow to tax collections. State revenues were down by nearly two percent from december. Last year overall. All but according to the urban brookings tax policy center tax revenues actually increased in twenty two states. This disparity has a lot to do with the mix of jobs in layoffs in a state. Says carl davis at the institute on taxation and economic policy so many lower income people have been laid off higher income. People have been much more likely to keep their jobs so tax. Revenues are down by double digits in states with lots of low-wage tourism jobs in hotels bars and restaurants florida and but states with more jobs that can be done from home at higher wages. Like in high tech and professional services are faring better. Washington's one example thinks in part to folks like darby megan of spokane he's a manager for tech startup. his wife's an accountant for an architecture firm. They're both working from home. We've maintained our salaries and that's been huge blessing. Haven't had to take a step back hours or anything. Like that with the stimulus checks. That was a nice little bonus. The couple owns a home. That's gone up in value. So they're paying more property tax but they've improved their overall balance sheet. We've been able to save significantly more right. We're not eating out as much and they made one really big purchase. A new van built into an rv. So we've sort of taken some of our vacation money that you budget and instead may domestic vacation mobile now not every high earner has come through the pandemic recession unscathed. Fiona greek at the g. P. morgan chase institute has been tracking household checking balances. There are some high income families that have seen cuts in their income cuts in their salaries but most of seeing their bank balances and assets grow and she says one reason is the booming stock market the broader trend. There's the growth and wealth. We see a lot of families transferring money into brokerage accounts to take advantage of those games but some states are missing out on taxing. Those income gains at the top. Says carl davis at the institute on taxation and economic policy. He points to nevada heavily dependent on tourism dollars revenue down about twelve percent where there is no broad based income tax. You're leaning a lot on sales taxes. Regressive taxes in general. Your revenues aren't going to do quite as well as progressive taxes at a time. Like this of just soaring income inequality contrast that with california that's opted for a more progressive mix leaning a bit more on the income tax most states do with higher top income tax rates on top earners. Especially that's staring a whole lot. Better with revenues up around two percent since the pandemic started. That's helped a good bit by silicon valley which attracted v and his family from texas. So i'm a software engineer. I was in iran for about four and a half years. And then during the pandemic My wife connor fulltime opportunity and bay area so we moved. He says silicon valley employers are hiring. Like there's no tomorrow. There were plenty of opportunities in the to offers in my hand. Some states are now considering hiking taxes on top earners to boost revenues and fund recovery from the pandemic including new york. Minnesota connecticut rhode island and

Amnesty strips Alexei Navalny of 'prisoner of conscience' status

"There was a time when a figure like alexei navalny might have been able to count on if little else the full-throated support of amnesty international. The russian opposition figurehead would appear to meet. Every definition of a prisoner of conscience imprisoned on exceedingly dubious pretext spy unpleasant authoritarians and slash. With no record of ever having furthered he's caused through perpetrating inciting or suggesting violence however amnesty appear to differ on the basis of remarks made by navalny about immigrants a few years back. Amnesty has announced that whatever they will classify navalny as prisoner of conscience is not one. Join with more on this by mark kelly. Russia analyst and author of several books most recently a short history of russia. Mark festival to this maneuver by amnesty. Aren't they missing the point of prisoner of conscience a little bit that it's not necessary that you actually agree with them. Yeah absolutely and this is definitely something of an own-goal for amnesty. And especially so because it seems to bury much be have been triggered by a campaign or if not orchestrated by the kremlin but certainly sort of very much augmented by kremlin friendly. Voices in on social media does hurt navarre only at all it. Does i mean we go. To realize that the kremlin the moment is trying to portray him as anything but a immoral icon. I mean this wine set of charging him with treason or anything like that. They've gone for embezzlement. And basically he's dismissing a great patriotic war veteran and this is going to be an ready. It is being magnified by the russian state media as if it somehow amnesty deciding that novell abadan of course amnesty saying they still think that he should not be imprisoned so forth but that kind of nuance doesn't matter. So the kremlin is definitely gonna use this for it's worth which part of the russian electorate public does this stuff play with though i mean the charges against navalny especially that one. You alluded to of having insulted a veteran of the great patriotic. I mean that's absurd even if true that you would put somebody in the dark for that. The point is this is a long game. Let's be honest. Nevada is going to be in prison for at least two and a years. and what. the substandard kremlin tactic. They basically throw so much mud that even if each individual charge is when you look at it pretty ridiculous at some point just begins to sift into the subconscious of of many of the potential electric. Who aren't really people following the news in detail. They not committed inobound nights. They just went on the they. Just get unsensitive. Oh yeah you know what there will lose court. Cases wasn't their rulers allegations. The hope is that it'll stick again. It's not a sophisticated tactic but they hope is that skin. They have so much control over the media and probably a couple of years to do it. They can black and his reputation before he ever sees the light of day. We have talked before about the strategic sense of this from your vladimir putin on the russian regimes point of view as like why you would turn valley into the center of a circus rather than just ignore him. They hoping though that if he is sent to the salt pile fluently for at least two and a half years that he will just be forgotten about. Definitely the idea. I mean again. They hope is that this way he just simply becomes someone who again used to be someone now. Of course. The difficulty is the moment they have him in a top security prison within a prison. In due course he's going to have to go out and presumed me to just an ordinary prison or in this case a penal colony which is how the russians classify that their prisons and at that point. You know there is the chance that he will have access to whether it's sort of illegal cell phones that he can send out the message and so forth so the there is going to be this constant narrative struggle navanly's people want to keep his memory alive. They want to make into a current thing. The kremlin indu course will want to make him into just some past figure who gets forgotten the you. You have responded to the persecution of nevada by imposing some sanctions which do more symbolic than anything else navalny's supporters unsurprisingly asking the eu to expand those sanctions but is there anything the eu can realistically do in the sanctions department which is going to Compel russia to adjust their behavior. Navales concern because russia can't back down now right valley's going to the penal colony for at least two and a half years yes. There's no real question about that but look sanctions are more than anything else about political symbolism and when you just assigned to go for four fairly obvious candidates who basically have no property in the eu. And unlike we're unlikely to becoming to holiday in the south of france the symbolism the message you're giving is basically we have done the least possible we really don't want to get involved in this if the e you had come up with with a much more robust package of measures. Of course it wouldn't have meant. The putin would suddenly have quake in his boots. Before ios it burrell and reversed his policy but it would have said look. We do take this seriously. We will consist on adding costs to your actions. The trouble is at the moment that actually what they basically said is quite the opposite. The russia obviously does hope that we've out navan the as its figurehead than the protest movement that he leads will just sort of dwindle. Evaporate and disappear. Is that light clear. The discussions about how the rage could be maintained. I mean i'm thinking back to those color revolutions in eastern europe in the early part of this century in one of the reasons or one of the ways they succeeded as that they were substantially lead a loose so the authorities seeking to suppress the movements. Didn't really know who they should cart off. Yeah absolutely and this is one of the problems. I mean they pass. The opposition has had the great virtue of his finger navalny as figurehead because he's very charismatic and effective but now they novelli shaped hole and really echo three ways. They could indeed dwindle all it could. Well be that we will find new leaders. Arising i mean it might be as in belarus that actually you'll find for example navales wife emerging as a new figure all others who can basically fill that role. The third possibility is though if this movement which is essentially very much it's nonviolent. It's political if this fails then there is also the risk that actually people become more radicalized. They feel that we. We tried everything we could within the system. We're going to have to try and go without the system. And i think this is the moment we actually have. No idea. notice the kremlin which way it'll go

What Would Happen If Chabot Dam in the East Bay Hills Broke Open?

"What would happen if chicago damn cracked open an empty the lake behind it onto neighborhoods in san leandro and east oakland. It's an alarming thought. We asked cake. Ud's dan bricky. Who's reported on safety issues at california's oroville dam to find the answer. Holly and vickers kings question is a really good one because it reminds us that all dams pose risks of some kind given the nature of the job they perform holding back huge volumes of water they can turn from placid lake into deadly torrent. If unleashed all at once. They deserve very close attention. When that attention lapses catastrophes can do happen in late may eighteen eighty nine flood. Water overflowed badly maintained private dam in western pennsylvania. Triggering its collapse. A wall of water race down the valley below a century later. Historian david mccullough said. The johnstown flood was so vividly alive in the local consciousness. I grew up in western pennsylvania. I'd heard about the johnstown flood my whole life as children. We used to shout run for the hills. The damas busted little knowing what real terror is in those words. The flood wiped entire towns off the map and killed twenty. Two hundred people in california owns its own special chapter in the history of dam disasters with a tragedy that unfolded more than ninety years ago in a remote canyon fifty miles north of downtown los angeles from the day. The saint francis dam opened in one thousand nine hundred twenty six. It leaked the folks in the farm. Towns downstream used to joke. They'd see you later if the damn don't break on march twelfth nine hundred twenty eight. The saint francis damn disintegrated just hours after it was pronounced sound by los angeles water. Chief william mulholland who had designed and built the two year old structure when the massive concrete dam broke apart water raised more than fifty miles to the pacific ocean killing about four hundred fifty people along the way but those events one hundred thirty years ago in johnstown ninety some years ago in los angeles county sound like ancient history much more recently california. Got a lesson in how dangerous and costly failure of even part of a major dam can be failure ambiance spillway structure results in an uncontrolled. Lisa flood waters from link oroville and eating evacuation from the low twenty. Seventeen collapse the spillway at oroville dam in the northern sierra foothills one hundred thirty miles northeast of san francisco touched off a series of events that lead local officials to order one hundred eighty eight thousand people to flee their homes. This is not a drill. Repeat this is not a drill. Spill ways are crucial to preventing overtopping. That's what happens. When a reservoir rises over the top of the dam and simply spills over a spillway is like an emergency valve. Damn managers can open to safely release water from a reservoir bills over the top but back in february twenty seventeen oroville dam spillway began to disintegrate just as a series of winter storms dumped huge amounts of rain across northern california without a fully functioning. Spillway lake oroville rose rapidly water poured over a hillside that was supposed to serve as an emergency spillway. That emergency spillway began to fail to leading to the mass evacuation. In the aftermath investigators found the emergency spillway was ill conceived and the main spillway was badly designed poorly built and inadequately maintained. So how is should bowe damn different from all those bad dams and what does east bay mud have to say about. Chaba cracking open and unleashing catastrophe on the east bay. Simple answer to that question is that the dam would never crack open. That's jimmy yolly east bay mud director of engineering and chief damn safety officer he oversees the district twenty six times including chabad. Damn the reality is that the dams are designed such that. They don't just crack open. You will see signs of a failure if one is to occur and The dan's designs with monitoring equipment to make sure that you can see that happening if it was a east bay mud confidence that a dam built within a quarter mile of a dangerous fault will stand up to violent shaking. Let's take a look at how the dam was first built. Nearly one hundred fifty years ago and how it's been maintained since

"We're going to start in the early nineties back before this shift. When the old rules about government borrowing still applied. Bill clinton had just been elected president. He appointed an economist named laura tyson to be one of his top advisors and she looked at the economy and she saw this glaring problem year after year. Both government deficits and interest rates. Were going up and then he said omega if we don't get a hold of this federal deficit than that trend will continue. Those rates will continue upward. That was a very significant concern. Higher interest rates were concerned for a couple of reasons for one thing. Obviously they meant that the government had to pay more to borrow money but also when interest rates for the government went up. Interest rates also went up for everybody else. And that's it up this whole cascade of problems so we're people won't buy as many houses. There won't be as many houses constructed in their wealth as much capital equipment invested in and investments in important part of the Economic growth in your all sorts of every interest sensitive part of the economy the way the government runs a deficit. The way it borrows money is by selling bonds treasury bonds. The government says to really anybody. Okay lend us whatever one hundred dollars and in say ten years we will pay you back with interest will pay you back one hundred twenty dollars. The bond is basically the government's i. Iou you that it will pay back that loan with interest and during the clinton administration because of that link between deficits and interest rates. Everybody in the white house talked about treasury bonds about the bond market time. James carville was a political advisor to president. Clinton was just an obsession. In the early days of clinton's everybody say what's the bond market could house bot mocking react to hell multiple. i don't know it just became this omnipresent. The heart of every conversation. James carville was not an economics guy but as he spent time at the white house he realized that sort of bizarrely all these people who worked there making policy the people who had what seemed like the most powerful jobs in the world. We're in fact terrified of the bond market so when a reporter from the wall street journal called up carville to talk about the bond market. He came up with this line that became sort of famous or at least bond market famous kid. I wanted to grow up with four hundred hitter. The pope and the president. But i just want to be the bond. Market's gonna scare the hell out of everybody pleat. What did he say. A what a hundred hitter like in baseball pope the president baseball. I cannot tell you how many times he said that's me. Every meeting every meeting a lot of my memories are about carville sort of making jokes about you. Know you issues as a bond trader bond traders. These are the people who work in finance all around the world who manage a bunch of money. Generally other people's money pension funds or college endowments that kind of thing and every day they decide what bonds to buy and what bonds to sell what companies and countries to lend to and what companies and countries to not lend to to stop lending to and like with any lender bond traders worry about lending more money to a borrower who is already borrowing a lot because all that borrowing makes it more risky and so to compensate for that risk bond traders demand a higher interest rate. They stop lending until rates. Go up and this bond traders demanding higher interest rates when the government is borrowing more money. This is the scenario that everyone was so worried about people. Were so afraid of this that there was even a special term for the bond traders. Who do this bond vigilantes. Bill clinton has convinced. The bond vigilantes are scary and in fact he decides the us needs to bring the deficit down. He decides to build a whole economic plan around getting rid of the deficit. One of the economists he brought in to make that happen was jason and a central argument. That we made was if you do this. It will lower interest rates and interest rates are lower will have more investment and more economic growth and sort of amazingly. All of this happened. They did raise taxes and cut spending and get the deficit down. In fact by the end of the clinton administration the deficit felt all the way to zero. And what came next was sort of a golden moment for the economy in silicon valley. There was the dot com boom but really the whole economy was doing great businesses of all kinds. Were doing well. Ordinary workers were getting breezes lower deficits lead to lower interest rates which led to more investment. And that was good for basically everybody. The system was working. The next big moment in the story comes right after the financial crisis of two thousand eight and this is the moment when everything is about to change when this big shift in the way the world works is about to happen but nobody quite nosy yet. Brock obama has just been elected. President obama brings in clinton's guy. Jason furman as one of his economic advisors and ferment. Goes into this meeting to discuss. How big of a stimulus. Bill obama should push for as he takes office. We met with the president-elect december sixteenth two thousand eight and we're all crowded together in a conference room. I think it was in a law firm in chicago and he wanted it to be big. He wanted to be bold but there was this worry. The stimulus was going to be funded with deficit. Spending government was going to borrow the money. And some of obama's own economic advisers worried that borrowing and spending too much money might actually harm the economy for that classic reason

A Ouija board mystery

"Welcome to kiss myths and mysteries. Heiner host kit chrome in my month-long search our investigation into different forms of nation. I touched on the wage board last friday. And almost as a cautionary tale and immediately received some emails. Asking me to back that up. So i put it to my team of urban legend writers to come up with some information. That was something. I can validate with police. A names and numbers and read over this podcast so here. It is in the small seaside town of dungeness bay. The bodies of seventy five year old eric ward and his seventy two year old wife. Mildred were found on the beach without a mark on either body. The clothes were soaked with seawater. The autopsy report indicated. The water was found in their lungs. The bodies were discovered by a jogger who tracks were the only ones found on the beach when the police arrived locals testified that the couple were often seen walking the beach. at twilight. The couple's adult son clayton ward. Came up from california that after three weeks of intense investigation no suspects were revealed and clayton had to get back to his job as a technology specialist for the silicon valley giant apple but his parting comment to the dungeon is bay. Police was that when he returned he'd be able to identify the murder of his parents in eighteen. Ninety one the patent was granted to elijah bond for the we g board but one of the first mentions of the review board used was in asia around eleven hundred. Ad and historical document documents from that era but the design we know today was based on the talking boards of ohio produced by kennard six months after his first visit to dungeness baked clayton more restrictions on the list of clues. He assured police that if followed would lead them to the murderer of his parents. Seven days later after following the various clues. The police brought in steve hawks. The grounds keeper employed by the wards who under intense interrogation confessed to the drowning of the couple. He claimed that eric had kept a large amount of cash in a safe that he planned on taking. He was however unable to explain how he was going to get into the safe. When asked by the police where he got the clues clayton more replied that he belonged to a small group that used the ouija board to solve crimes and that when his father was contacted his father's spirit told him steve had knocked him unconscious and then dragged him into the waves thinking they would be washed out to sea where they would drown but he was unaware that it was low. Tide and they'd be washed up on the beach with the changing tide. He further toll clayton that. If the police went to steve's house they would find the bloody tire iron news to knock him unconscious. Clayton return to california but when police attempted to contact him with further questions about the clues they found his address was nonexistent. Phone number disconnected no record of employment at the apple corporation. Then investigator that was brought in on the case discovered that eric and ward owned a ouija board and from journal they cap learn that they were often the host of the spirit calling itself. Dozo now we g board users will tell you that. Zoe is the demon spirit of the ouija board that sometimes he becomes protective of those that. Hold the open through the board that allows him to enter this world. Where the wards holding the door open for a demon spirit that manifested into the image of a protective son that never existed and when they were murdered by their grounds keeper was a door that allowed so to pass back and forth between this world and is shut. From ballet dancer to zombie slayer: Cree actor Michael Greyeyes on his prolific career

"You may have seen my guest today on the small screen and big screens or on the stage. Michael is is a man of many talents. He's a classically trained ballet dancer. Choreographer director playwright and renowned actor over his three decade. Long career michael has appeared in some of the most beloved first nation films like dance me outside and smoke signals. He has taken on challenging roles. Playing indigenous leaders like sitting bull wandering spirit to come see and crazy horse more recently. He's taken the small screen by storm appearing on hit tv shows like fear the walking dead true detective and the soon to be released nbc. Comedy rutherford falls. Michael is net. Oh and a member of the musket lake cremation in sketch. Juan and he joins me now from los angeles. Welcome to the show. Michael falen thank you so much for the invitation. Oh it's so great to have you here so you're in los angeles right now But i wanna go back a bit. Can you tell me about where you grew up. I'm from treaty. Six territory in saskatchewan My mom and dad are from reserves in the middle of saskatchewan. My dad's from moscow. And my mom is from sweet grass and my sister and my family. We lived in a couple of places where in the capelle valley. Of course lebron and then we moved to saskatoon and saskatoon was where i spent my boyhood until i was plucked plucked from the prairies at the age of ten years old to attend canada's national ballet school in toronto and my family and i we moved from treaty six territory to To dish with one spoon territory. So i could pursue dance as as a career potential career and so i wanna talk about your dancing a bit but first i want to know what was it. Like growing up on the prairies. What do you remember What do you remember about growing up on the prairies. So many beautiful things. Obviously that's home. That's that's that's my home. That's where i know about my family. My a my early years. I remember the sunlight of remember the sky. I remember my cousins and all my relatives. And i remember playing just riding my bike with my banana seat all over town. They need to make banana seats again. They're very comfortable. they do they do in los angeles. There's a whole like bike culture. We're fleeing be tricked out bike's banana seats. So you're known primarily as an actor now but as you mentioned you know you got into the entertainment industry in a different way. You started as a dancer as a ballet dancer. So how does a kid growing up in saskatoon and up in the ballet well by accident entirely by axes we were living in saskatoon and my mom was a teacher at the school for the deaf. A very famous School for deaf children in saskatoon and my sister. And i were doing you know little kid things. I was playing hockey of course and my sister was taking dance lessons so mumbai. I we used to week for my sister in the car and i was you know five six years old so i was like a super board super easily so it was like she died. She'd done and i would go up and check on her. I remember the classes at the university of scotch one and it was kind of like this wile experiences little kid i walk in. I'd look for her and then she be dancing with these little girls. In one day. I decided to really kinda pay attention to what they were doing. And i and then. I blurted got ceesay. Teacher overheard me. She said well. Do you think it's easy. Why don't you come on back next week. So i said A will and i told my mom all week. I'm going to dance next week. And she of course you know. I apparently said lots of crazy things as as a boy but as the days got closer. She was like okay he. He's repeating it. He's he's he's he's insistent about this. Why do you think you're going to death sex because the teacher invited me so with my mom and my mom used me. I'm so so sorry. Michael thinks that you've invited him. Smith usually oh yeah yeah yeah come on in. And that's how. It started precocious boy pushing his way into a dance class that he hadn't signed up for.

Dennis Muilenburgs Bet on the Future

"Denis muhlenberg has kept a low public profile since he left his job. Ceo of boeing at the end of twenty nineteen. But that's about to change me. Lemberg has teamed up with air finance founder. kirsten bartok tau and other aviation luminaries to fund a special purpose. Acquisition company called new vista acquisition corp. They're aiming to raise two hundred and forty million dollars through public offerings to acquire businesses focused on transformational technologies in areas. Such a space defense and communications advanced their mobility and logistics. What does that mean well. We'll let you hear directly from denison. Kirsten who have joined today also with us on my side of the table so to speak is aviation weeks. Technology specialists and urban air mobility guru executive editor graham warwick. Just one no we will. Not be talking about boeing past or future. If you're interested in that i'd like to refer you back to our january twenty nine podcast so let's get started a dentist. Tell us what you're up to. And why joe the good morning and thanks for the chance to talk about new vista. We're very excited about this. New endeavor and that excitement starts with a tremendous opportunity that we see right now as you know i had the privilege of being the ceo of boeing back in. We celebrated our centennial in two thousand sixteen and we. We did some work together on the age of aerospace and when we look back on the history of aerospace the opportunity in front of his right. Now i think it's the greatest one in that one hundred plus year history harris face. We're seeing this convergence of technologies in a way that we've never seen before technologies that span artificial intelligence autonomy new manufacturing techniques satellite technologies new types of vehicles and propulsion systems that set of emerging technologies. All at once has never happened before. Combine that with mega-scale changes in the market. You mentioned air mobility new waste. People are moving Logistics e commerce capabilities the revolution in space in the build out of the lower orbit ecosystem and next generation defense systems that combination of technologies and mega skill. Market ships creates an unprecedented opportunity. And that's what we're focused on at new vista kirsten. Let's hear from you. What brought you into team. Up with dennis and How are you approaching this. Thanks joe and as you know. I've been pretty focused on advanced ever ability for the last four or five years Having been based in silicon valley and kind of live through the internet growth and doing venture capital back then realized early that this transition was going to happen and just from the basic technologies with your talk about them. Electrification greeted propulsion which then goes to autonomy and an ad in hydrogen which has come on the radar lately These technologies are going to completely change Aerospace so that the next twenty years is going to look completely different in the last twenty years and even the is you know. The aircraft designs will look entirely different. Lucky enough i been working on this trying to figure out the right vehicle to investment doing a lot of my own personal investing some through our finance and then was Got on the idea of a spec realized that could be the optimal solution to help. These emerging companies crossed the chasm of death valley of death that we call where you got early stage venture capital money but they needed at large amount of growth capital. These are deep company's hardware and software at their capital intensive and then added that they've got the regulatory component of the faa and. they needed some good opportunities. For large amounts of crossover capital groups. Like softbank could have been that or sovereigns but the spac product has really come in to help. These company cost the valley of death and make it to the next level where they're commercialization occurs and their operational so i couldn't be more lucky to partner with such an incredible operators dennis someone who really pushed billing to be more. Entrepreneurial created horizon ex and necks and We put together a great team here. And we're excited to make a positive difference in the landscape. So so what are you thinking. I mean how do you take these technologies that we write about all time. I guess our listeners want to know and apply them to be like a real product. What what is really exciting. Talk about this this change in the next twenty years. What can we see in practical terms. What are we going to see. joe. I think you're gonna see transformation in these four market segments that we're talking about that's way beyond what we've ever seen before i take what's happening in the in. The lower orbits space ecosystem and extraordinary the number of technologies. That we're seeing that are coming into places real applications now. The build out a satellite infrastructure nanno sats micro sats we see a market for fifty thousand plus additional small sets on orbit or the next decade. We see a number of companies who are working on breaking the cost curve for access to space new launch capabilities that are coming to bear and then new applications in terms of how to use those satellite networks to create information at useful data earth observation New kinds of reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities connectivity. In communications i think the low earth orbit ecosystem. Build out that we're seeing now is just one example of the kind of massive transfer transformation that we're gonna see that's going to create economic value. It's gonna create new companies new jobs. it's going to create a new technologies that are on the innovation edge that are now ripple out into other business sectors. So it's an exciting time to be working on this leading edge
