What's Happening in Arizona Can Happen to Any Christian School

"You folks at Liberty University. Many of you folks have done your student teaching work in Lynchburg. What if the Lynchburg city council woke up one day and decided, you know what? We don't want to have any Christians working in our public school system. The same thing could happen to you folks in in Jackson, Tennessee at union university, or right outside of Chattanooga at Lee university. Great Christian schools. Churning out incredible, incredible teachers. But they could be denied jobs if in fact they profess faith in Jesus Christ. Now, here's the curious thing. We have a lot of I know we have a large and very diverse audience. We have Christians and atheists we have Jews and gentiles we have people who are conservative people who are liberal people who are straight people who are gay, what I'm curious about, where is where are all the conservative gay folks out there? Why are they not rising up in outrage over this? Where is the gay community at large because right now they are citing with the school board and the school board is doubling down. And they're saying, you know what? We do not want Christians in our public schools. This ladies and gentlemen is the hill to die on. This is the this is the moment where you have to stand up. And you have to fight back. And I'm glad to see people standing up and fighting back, but I am really surprised. By the numbers of people who came out and said, yeah, we don't have a problem with this. We think that's a good idea. Christians have no right to be in public school classrooms. As teachers.

Eric Tells Us About His Recent Trip to Lynchburg, Virginia

"I was in Lynchburg, Virginia. At Liberty University, for an amazing event, Ryan helfenbein, Ryan is amazing. And he heads up the faith and freedom center at liberty. Ryan put together this conference, Sean Foyt was there, Liz Wheeler was there, Megan basham, my hero, Megan bed she's amazing. We spend time with her. Ralph Reed was, I mean, all these friends and it was amazing and lieutenant governor mark, was it Robinson, North Carolina, who's just a fighter. It was the whole thing was incredible. But I had to leave the next day because now this is the thing. I knew I was going to be in Pittsburgh because I spoke yesterday three times at grace life church pastor pastures book and Amy schaeffer invited me to speak here in Pittsburg because I was in Harrisburg. We met whatever ten days ago when I was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. So they invited me to be here. And then I get a phone call from you, Alvin seda, telling me, hey Eric, Saturday, which was two days ago, when you're going to be in Pittsburgh, guess what's happening in that neck of the Woods. And I said, what's happening, Alban? I've been telling the people what was happening. Well, Doug mass gianno Emmett Oz and president Donald Trump were campaigning and they had a big rally in latrobe PA. Right. So we cooked up a scheme where your identical twin brother, who I believe also had a birthday two days ago. That's right. What a coincidence. That's amazing. He picked me up from the airport. And he looked so much like you that it's kind of disturbing. It's kind of like wait a minute. You're Alvin. No, you're not Alvin. Yes, you're out, but no, you're not Alvin. Who are you?

Eric Welcomes 'God, Caesar and Idols' Author Rick Boyer to the Show

"So I'm thrilled to have the author of God Caesar and idols as my guest, Rick Boyer, welcome to the program. Thank you, Eric. I can't say enough how much respect I have for you and your organization and your commitment to a biblical worldview and the people of God, it is a tremendous service to the church and to the lord Jesus Christ. You're very kind. I think many people listen to this program of course who are not committed Christians who are all over the map. Ideologically. And I think I want to help them understand even why I'm a Christian and why I know that the founders understood there is no way for America to succeed without people of deep faith. And it kind of astonishes me as it clearly does you from the way you've written the book that we have drifted away from this. So before we get into the book itself, you're a constitutional lawyer living in Lynchburg, Virginia, your liberty grad, you said your dad is a liberty grad. What led you a lawyer to write a book called God Caesar and idols, the church and the struggle for America's soul. Well, my background really is in conservative activist politics. That's what's really floats my boat, if you will, and I've done that since I was a teenager. And after the, and I guess I went to law school specifically with the idea of learning the law learning how to apply it to politics. And of course, Liberty University school of law, you get a terrific education and the biblical foundations of American law. But after the 2017 elections here in Campbell county just outside of Lynchburg, Virginia, where I live, watching a elections for school board here in Campbell county, where some candidates were talking about, hey, we need to take a stand against the transgender craziness ideology in our schools and others were saying, no, that's not a big issue. Let's just find more tax money to support more programs. And I watched my community right here in the shadow of Liberty University. "You can't just go to Lynchburg and decide, I'm going to go to lunch per Tennessee and have a drink in honor of Jack Daniels, but skip the tour, because you probably know this, but it's a dry dry county. County. So the only way that you can be drinking Jack Daniels out in is to either do the tour, which includes tastings, or there's a restaurant and I'm blanking on the name of the restaurant, where they do are allowed to serve it as part of one of the tours. So if you go on their website and you're like, I want to do the tour that includes dinner that takes you to the only restaurant that's allowed to serve it. And it's because it's part of the official experience. He went and did the tour and I went and explored Lynchburg, which is a really cute town. And if you want to spend more time in the area, I could have easily done a full day just there too, but you got to make choices when you're on a road trip. And there's really cute shopping downtown like little old stores that are labeled like hardware store, but they're now like a T-shirt shop, but and then also something that we did my son and I did while we were waiting was we went and found Jack Daniel's grave. It's not super hard to find, but it's not one of those things that I found advertised on most of the lists of what to do in Lynchburg. I found it, you know, the American roadside website that lists every monument. That's where we found it. I literally was able to drive the car right up, which was great because it was raining. It was like pouring. And if you loved whisky, you probably could get away with though I'm not promising you to get away with having a drink of whisky. At the gravesite, like a little one, but you have to make your own risk analysis. But I wasn't going to be doing that. I just wanted to go and see it. I thought it was cool. And it does say, Daniels on it really big. And I'll send you a pic of it, Chris. It was really cool. That was fun..

"Host. Eric metaxas. Hey there folks welcome. I'm still in California. Nobody knows how this happened. The Pacific Ocean is right there. It just becomes more beautiful every day. I really recommend it as an ocean. If you haven't, if you haven't tried it, it's not a lot of oceans to choose from. I'm familiar with the Atlantic. Now a little bit with the Pacific. The other oceans, I really can't comment on them and I apologize. We're going to get we're going to get to that as soon as possible. But we have more pressing matters. We have the future mayor of New York is going to be on here in a second as would be appropriate. He's currently stuck in traffic. All right, so Chris heims, you're sitting in for Albin today. And there's so much I need to talk about. Where do we start? I mean, first of all, let me say this tonight. I'm speaking in Marietta, California tomorrow. I'm speaking in San Diego. On Friday, I visit the Babylon bee offices in upland California on Saturday and Sunday I'm in Thousand Oaks. Like, it's a crazy tour. It's a book where is atheism dead? I might have never mentioned it on the program before, but it's my new book. And the feedback I've been getting has been amazing, but I want to read an email that I got that is a little strange and I think it's important to share everything. I want to be honest with my audience. Here's an email. It says Eric. This is from Tammy. I wanted you to know how excited I was for your new book is atheism dead to arrive today at my door. And the icing on the cake, it smells good. Love me some new book smell. For the record, not every new book smells this nice, thanks, Tammy. I think she might live in Missouri, but we can't say, because she may have enemies who are against the whole new book smell thing. But Chris, have you ever heard about new book smell like I've never thought I've heard of new car smell? I mean, I kind of get it a little bit. It's sort of like the opposite of going into a library and what that smells like there, baby. Like urine yes, perhaps. No, but that's a new thing. New new book thing. Anyway, I just had to share that not only is the book being reviewed extremely positive of if you read some of the Amazon reviews. I was astonished, people are really loving it. Of course, that's every author's hope, but when you read so many reviews that say really nice things, you can't help but be thrilled. Last night I was in San Marcos. I just posted that video. It was an amazing conversation. The pastor his name is Greg denim. He's an amazing person. He's become a friend. And he he's kind of like a cross between Greg glory and how we mandel. If they had a child. Does he pull a medical latex glove over his face and inflate it with his nose? Like Howie Mandel is it? As a pastor, he can't do that. But I think he would. But anyway, just a blessing to be here in California I'm watching people getting ready to surf out there, a lot of orcas and a lot of debts. I just want to say we saw a man cut in two in the jaws of an orca it was a gruesome thing at the same time it was beautiful, just to see nature working. So close. Okay, so I want to say that I'm going to be in Kansas City, Missouri, Houston, Texas, which talk Kansas again, Lynchburg tenant and Lynchburg Virginia, Atlanta, Georgia billings, Montana, I'll be back here in San Diego. I think at awaken church. There's so many wonderful limitations to come and speak about the book as atheism dead. And I spoke last night about this. I really think we're going to see paper dying shift. I think it's happening and my book will be a part of it that people will really come to conclusion that the thesis that atheism is a thing, it just goes away. It had its season, you know, kind of like Soviet communism. And then it just went away. And so you're going to see, you know, thoughtful, agnostics, at least, but I think atheism is dead. Okay, I want to say this before we go to the future mayor of New York by.

How Virginia Became Ground Zero in the American Culture War

"Virginia, which is now being called a blue state, how long is it going to be blue? Or is it going to stay that way? Again, the counties around Washington, D.C. are reliably blue for a variety of different reasons. The first reason of course is its proximity to the power center to the kingdom of Washington, D.C.. The second is the amount of universities that are in Northern Virginia, which is extraordinary. If you look at the amount of universities in D.C. and Virginia, the third of which is, of course, the fact that a lot of first generation low wage worker immigrants move to Northern Virginia to be able to make the life of luxury possible for so many people that live in Northern Virginia. And many, many of the refugee resettlement programs and the immigration, the mass immigration programs come to Northern Virginia, which has resulted in a totally different political type atmosphere to win an election in Virginia. And so Virginia Democrats have been able to win, reliably by running up the score Northern Virginia, being able to win in Richmond and win on the Virginia coast. The rest of Virginia is very conservative, by the way. Lynchburg is very conservative, Blacksburg isn't because of Virginia tech, but Virginia, Virginia used to be a very conservative state. Charlottesville is obviously not very conservative because the University of Virginia, Blacksburg is Virginia tech, Charlottesville is University of Virginia Lynchburg's Liberty University which is actually a pretty conservative area. Richmond is a very, very Democrat area, and so Virginia seemed dead on arrival for years. There have been great candidates before, running for governor as Republicans, and they always get disappointed. And right, of course, the current governor of Virginia's give and a Ralph northam of Virginia and he won against a pretty good candidate who was the Republican canon in 2017. I can't remember Virginia's goofy. Virginia has elections in off years for their statewide elected officials. So 2017, 2021, 2013, they do every four years and in coming up in a couple weeks, is the Virginia governor's race. And Democrat operatives all across the country, they are going a full court press they are trying to California recall the Virginia race. They're going all in. They're raising money they're bringing in surrogates, so Terry mcauliffe, who is the corrupt Clinton surrogate and wants to be governor of Virginia, I think, again, he was governor once, right? Years ago. He says, look, yesterday I had Jill Biden here. I've had Stacey Abrams. Now, let me just say this. What constituency gets excited about having Stacey Abrams I've got Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance bottoms. Oh, I see the type. He's building a constituency on how to fraudulently steal elections. That's who he's bringing in. President Obama and, of course, Joe

No player if you those were on delays in Washington, Interestingly, even though our kids are home from school, virtual pulling no no delays. Yesterday you got the GOP senators meeting for a couple of hours with the president. Tell us a little about it. Yeah, The meeting went much longer than expected. It was two hours and you know, By all accounts, it was a success. Everybody came out and had really positive adjectives to describe the meeting, calling it productive and constructive and even one calling it a success. But they didn't reach an agreement. I don't think there was an expectation they would. The White House certainly had downplayed expectations. Earlier in the day saying, and this is an exchange of ideas and that they were looking forward to a conversation. But this is on a meeting with the president would accept a Republican offer so going into that that's the baseline there. It was a conversation and they continued to come talk reason, but I think afterwards the statements for notable in the digging in of heels, the White House says that while there were areas of agreement, there were many areas that the president pointed out that the Republican senators don't address what he wants to Deal and that he is not going to settle for a package that the White House says failed to meet the moment so they get minus. He wants 1.9 Trillion. The Republican senators proposed a third of that, you know now the question is, Can they come down and up? Can you meet somewhere around 1.21 Point $3 billion, perhaps excusing trillion dollars. I should say, perhaps, but you know, the speed is also the issue right now. Q Because Democrats on Capitol Hill are traveling forward to start making moves to do This without Republicans on board in any idea, I mean, is it's the next month the next three days next three weeks. Yeah, I think probably next 2 to 3 weeks. Remember, we've got the impeachment trial starting this week, and that's going to certainly suck up a lot of oxygen. A lot of attention in Washington. There was no sense they could get this done well, 4 February 8th and 9th, but they were eager to try and get some progress before the end of this week. I think he's gonna move pretty quickly right now over the next couple of days. I will see you know where the wiggle room might be. If there is any right now, remember, they could do this without Republicans. It was President Biden, who promised bipartisanship and is trying to see if he can make good on that pledge. So rose flew from arizona all the way to boston but she didn't receive the treatment that she expected when rose arrived at the hospital orderlies placed her in a wheelchair and brought her into the operation. Room apparently no one spoke to her or explain what was happening. After doctors strapped into a device rendering it immobile rose demanded to meet. Dr eben alexander. She was about to go under and he had yet to introduce himself mere minutes before the operation began. Dr alexander stepped in front of her said. Hello and assured her that she was in good hands then she drifted into unconsciousness and the surgery began when rose woke up in the icu. She couldn't move the left side of her face. Dr alexander never warned her about the risks associated with her surgery and though he'd successfully eliminated her tumor half of her face was now permanently paralyzed. Ultimately rose filed a lawsuit. Her lawyers asked to see the paperwork she'd signed before entering surgery. But apparently dr alexander could only produce a single sheet of paper. It didn't even have rose's signature on it. Apparently dr alexander had misplaced a number of her forms. The case was eventually settled out of court shortly after. Brigham and women's fire dr alexander from their roster administrators have not stated whether or not the dismissal was related to the lawsuit. Either way dr alexander moved on to work for umass memorial medical center located in worcester massachusetts. Where apparently his careless behavior continued during one operation. Dr alexander reportedly left a small piece of plastic inside a woman's nick. In addition to the pain this caused her she needed another intensive surgery to have it removed then in august two thousand three umass suspended dr sanders for an error made during an operation. The politics of division and slander are not our values, McCain said in a high school gym a few miles from the headquarters of the Christian Coalition. They are corrupting influences on religion and politics and those who practice them in the name of religion or in the name of the Republican Party. Or in the name of America. Shame, our faith, our party and our country. It's not smart to denounce a large portion of your party space. It all came to an end on March 7th Super Tuesday when Bush swept every southern state primary with that his lead was insurmountable, and McCain quit. Selection afterward. Next, let's hear the inside scoop from an actual candidate. The groundbreaking politician Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress and in 1972. He became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Well, this expert of her memoir takes place during her congressional campaign for New York's 12th district. Really wanted to get the perspective of someone on the trail, especially someone who moved the political needle helping to make space for politicians such as Kamila Harris, the performer reading this piece has appeared on Broadway in shows such as Clybourne Park and in TV serials, including The Shy Four minutes. Excerpt from Shirley Chisholm, Unbossed and on bossed Here's Crystal Dickinson. I was just starting in February. Pain I had to make up for with hard work. I was determined to show them. People had to know that it was possible for someone with decency and the fighting spirit to overcome the system by beating it with his own weapons. Years in Brooklyn and New York City and Albany. I watched the rotten political system that stands in the wind change because its operators are beneficiaries of the status pump. They're committed against change because they have things wired for their benefit now. Changing the system to benefit the people more would mean that they would not be the king maker in the wheelers and dealers any longer. These men who put themselves forward as leaders and guardians of the people. This is the insidious thing we have to fight. So I can't pay in the hard way. In the streets. Racing's Drug Kingpin: Randy Lanier

"Let's get into the story of Randy Lanier the weed racer yes. Yeah Oh Randy. Lanier was born in Lynchburg Virginia on September. Twenty second nineteen fifty four. His family moved to Broward County Florida when he was thirteen. There were few things a good old boy such as randy loved more than pot. He would frequently sneak out of school just ahead to the beach and smoke smoke. Do by the age of fifteen. He was selling pot to his classmates. Even after he dropped out of high school he would continue to sell to his. GED Randy would say honestly. I didn't even think about it as drug dealing it was just a way. Okay for me to smoke without having to pay for Kumon tally. When did you first smoke? Pot Yeah Probably fourteen fourteen I think at that point I was too afraid of it because like there is on on my way to school. There is a tunnel that went under a freeway. Go through and like that's where like the the Estonians of the burnout so by smoke and they all kind of frightened me a little bit rightfully so they were kind of rough kids but I I it was never about that in high school. I thought like I think looking back on. It was pretty like dude intervene. Kinda like weird. I couldn't wait to smoke pot. Yeah Yeah I would've smoked pot way earlier if I were popular enough to have any friends. Yeah like years later I realized tons of kids I knew were smoking weed and they were like totally cool but it was just like those tunnel. Kids'll uh-huh scared me away from it is the first time I smoked was in college On top of a parking garage that was across the street from our dorm And of course like it was out of an apple. Of course yeah I think everybody's I Branches out of an apple and of course it didn't have any effect act on me and then the second time it did me and my boy tyler went back to our dorm room and we did freestyle raps over McNamara. She's a few hours. That's that's the way to do it. It was very sick. I mean when I was a kid like we'd culture was just so much it was just painted in such a different way. Yeah you know like it's fly out of lax with weed in your pocket. They were like we don't care some of these stores. La Look like the frigging apple store like men and it's crazy and it's like it's very convenient and you don't. You don't feel weird about buying pot but I feel like I definitely like missed out on like that. Like illicit elicit like. Yeah I used to smoke such crappy pot but the fact that there are people making billions of dollars off a weed right now and still people serving life sentences for possession national or selling is a huge problem that we should address maybe an another another day on another episode pats anyway it by the age of Nineteen Randy began working for construction company where he continued to sell it. Because he's not only a jug. Dili's Kinda just like a lazy like he's he jug dealer because like I don't know who's round man overtime it's clientele grew increasing the size of orders as well as prophets as sports illustrated. PUT IT in time. Joints turned into Baggies baggies. Turned into bag bags turned into bricks. rix became bales ails sales of a push. teed Johnston the BAGGIES. I can't do it slow anyway. Now it's hard. He's very good to the one thousand nine year. Old Randy drug dealing was the most promising opportunity yet he said. Let's just say I was definitely making more money. Then I made Neilan boards all day. I believe one of his last purchases on his first I just want to point out. How like good? This dude is at just sound clips. Yeah you know like yeah. Very romantic quotes. Yeah yeah one of his first purchases with his newfound wealth was a twenty seven foot magnum sports speedboat. He purchased for eighteen grand. Initially the boat was only. I used recreationally. He would jump waves and just you know cruise around there but before long an associate recommended he put that boat vote into quote commercial. Use like selling ice cream from the boat. James I doubt it. Oh I looked up these magnum votes This speedboat in particular is like so cool yeah just long as hell low fast. They're sick this guy's cool and and just like that Randy lanier move from being a low level drug dealer to a mid level trafficker in the timing. Couldn't have been better It it was the early nineteen seventies. It was a smuggler's Paradise Man. It was like the pirate days trafficking into the US specifically really from Columbia was still unknown. Threat that would soon become one of the biggest drug crazed sees in US history and a new exotic strain of marijuana called Colombian Colombian gold was being grown on Colombia's Guajira peninsula and it was beginning to flood the American black market. The arrival of Colombian gold fueled fueled a boom in America. Known as La Bonanza meeting. Better the mayor which loosely translates into the marijuana. Bonanza guys we gotTA Marijuana Bonanza Hands. Of course Florida was the best place to import such a large amount by the early eighties. About three quarters of the United States marijuana supply originated from Columbia Razi in his first mission. He he went to the Bahamas to pick up one ton of marijuana. So you're gonNA see like yeah I'm going to grab my boat to the middle of the ocean and pick pick up a ton of pot two thousand pounds a week it's crazy Randy showed up to these specified coordinates in the middle of the ocean and another other. Bigger boat would pull up next to them and the the we yeah. What's up guys like? And they transferred all the bales from the big boat into the whole of Randy's speedboat and then he would get the hell out of there all right thanks town to go back toot sweet right. I picture him just like wearing a cowboy like no shirt gene short. I'm imagining as not to become a in in the story from now. Yeah I think that's a good way to imagine This this technique was super common speedboats. Like Randy's were fast enough to evade the long long arm of the law and it wasn't difficult for smugglers to slip up the intercoastal waterway and hide a labyrinth of Florida swamps. According to a report one trafficker could earn a return investment of around one hundred fifteen percent so it made sense for randy to do this with a speedboat and naturally after you know I mean it sounds like this is like trying to get people to do it which they probably were you can get a return of one hundred and fifty. Why don't you come to this lunch at the Holiday Inn? And I'll I'll tell you all about a way that you can get up to one hundred and fifteen percent return on your investment with one Boron. We'll even Lisa the boat. Yeah very reasonable reasonable interest rates. Naturally ready was hooked. He did this trip. He did this kind of trip often. In spite of risks linear loved tempting fate eight and living on the edge of disaster for Kenny loggins lurk he had multiple close calls including one time almost sinking his boat as it was way down down so much by marijuana despite everything he frequently alluded capture by the US coastguard and received a twenty five percent. Cut of his delivery. Delivery seems like a lot. I mean he's taking all the risks to me. That's I guess he was just like a runner yes he wasn't dealing to the public anymore. Now he's there's like a guy from the ocean is a post mates for we. Yeah in a in a way. Yeah do you post Manson anymore. I use post meets way too much. I try to be waste free But you know sometimes you just you just want to pack of EMINEM. I know in one thousand nine hundred ninety six at the age of twenty two Lanier married his high school sweetheart. Pam uh-huh with her help. He opened a jet ski and boat rental shop near Fort. Lauderdale as a front to launder the money and present an air of legitimacy gene under the guise of a boat rental shop he soon purchased a sixty five foot trawler. I looked. I looked up with these are trawlers are basically really big boats votes There could be like recreational trawlers or fishing trawlers. Like just imagine a sixty five foot boat milk you can look it up Your you'll probably imagine the right thing. It's a big big boat with low. Yeah he got one of those with Got A lot of room. That's bigger than I thought. Yep Yep sixty five feet him with a boat this thing that is a thick composed he could smuggle directly from Columbia. No longer having to stop open meet a A mothership down to the Bahamas with each delivery he made with a sixty five foot boat he could smuggle over eighteen thousand pounds sounds of pot into the US that allowed sweet sweet dreams Enoug- soon despite massive quantities. He has now smuggling he was always smart smart about it. Never visiting import twice in a row. He would load up in the port of Santa Marta in Colombia and he would either doc in the US in in New Orleans San Francisco and sometimes bridgeport Connecticut Far Ways up the coast. Yeah I mean just looking at those three locations locations that's a huge spread Like some of those trips could take like a week. Some of them can take like three weeks to get there. You know that's crazy. Yeah smuggling muddling much like racing and comedy is all about timing Lanier loved loved the adrenaline rush of almost being caught doing something so illegal but he needed more one day while visiting an auto show that was taking place. Within the Miami Ame Convention Center Linear stumbled upon a booth that was sponsored by a local driving club. He immediately realized that racing would give him the high he needed and impulsively possibly signed up and that is when the racing career of Randy Lanier started in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight at the age of twenty four to the guys. I'm twenty six now. You don't even own one boat. I don't own a boat. Never smuggled shifts this dudes in his third career now. Yeah he started out as like get drug dealer. And he's a drug trafficker now owns a boat rental company. That's three and now he's like you know what man I think. I'm going to give this race car driving the try. It's awesome randy bought in nineteen fifty-six Porsche three five six speedster for seventy five hundred bucks and competed in the production class races at the SCC a southeast regional championships. Although he had no clue what he was doing he was a natural with each race. He proved drastically eventually winning the e production class in nineteen eighty at age. Twenty six. How old I am? I've never won any production class. Some feeling inadequate inadequate. But that's fine

"To introduce you in this story with you -ASEBALL walkup music no no no no we don't need that now okay we we might do it to you anyway just warning you okay okay I I met Logan Ice at baseball spring training that's the practice time before baseball season starts you've been with the Indian three APP drafted by the Indians in two thousand sixteen s Logan is twenty four years old he plays catcher and he's built like a catcher he square and muscular picture like a nine volt back story with legs three years ago Logan was playing college baseball he was eligible to be drafted by Major League Baseball team and if you happen to turn on the TV on the night of the draft the baseball experts really liked Logan Logan is they saved one of the best all around catchers in this draft a switch hitting that you're always a tough to find what do you think of Osu's backstop these got savvy I think he's got athleticism and agility behind the plate like this is one of the better college catchers out there on Indians ended up drafting Logan they liked him so much they paid him an eight hundred fifty thousand dollar signing bonus which is a lot of money but if things went well for Logan he could make so much money that that bonus would look like birthday card cash they're big leaguers playing Logan's position right now who make twenty million dollars per year but the way this works new players like Logan don't go straight to Cleveland's main team the one you see on national TV the one where guys are making millions no logan had to go and prove himself he got tossed in with the hundreds of other players playing on the Cleveland Indians feeder teams they're they're minor league teams Logan got sent two teams like the Mahoning Valley scrappers the Lynchburg Hill cats the Akron rubber ducks where the salary is not millions and last year in Africa what was your living situation so I was living on the couch for a little while lived in the hotel for a little while they give you a couple of nights how much you making if you can divulge her give me a range of thinking. Hey I want to say it's around sixteen hundred Aa I think is what it comes out to be something like that that's sixteen hundred dollars a month but only during the season no pay for spring training no pay for the off season so logan salary is just around eight thousand dollars a year not eighty thousand eight thousand six is but that doesn't account for living that doesn't account for shipping your car out that doesn't account for food granted they feed you a couple of meals a day Logan and to some degree all minor leaguers are kind of like living breathing lottery tickets when they pay off and make the majors they pay off huge earn millions and millions of dollars but for the vast majority of minor league players that never happens they toil away in the minor the League's making Bupkus and most do not have a giant signing bonus you see baseball is a winner-take-all career there is a very small chance of making huge amounts of money but more importantly there is a huge chance of making almost no money and as far as logan ice knew those really the only two options but one day a couple of years ago he was at the batting cages practicing and he got this message on Lincoln Lincoln in as like some of those recruiters and stuff that you automated message like yeah like that long do you remember what it said though I could maybe pull it up but see what I got here so he said Hey Logan it's been a minute it's also a small world because I was in the message was from an old baseball friend someone he hadn't seen in a while so there was some small commiserating about a particular minor league assignment Logan and gotten sucks that you got stuck in Mahoning valley last year which that he's one hundred percent right anyways I wanted to reach out because Logan's old friend explained that he was working for this new company that had an idea for how players might be able to deal with this super uncertain take all salary situation his friends message said that this company will quote help baseball players financially by pooling risk and invest listing in each other so logan's reading this and he's thinking this sounds fishy yeah no I I was the first thing I tell them saying hello and welcome to planet money I'm Kenny Malone and I'm Tom Goldman Tom Goldman covers sports for NPR. I should you do and what if this pooling risk thing what if it is a thing what is a completely new way to look at not just baseball but any winter GEICO career today on the show an economic idea that could change the way baseball players and the rest of US think about how we get paid support for NPR comes from Newman's own foundation working to nourish the common good by donating all profits from Newman zone food products to charitable organizations that seek to make the world a better place more information is available at Newman's own foundation dot org should I call you Zach or should I call you Cowabunga or one zero it's much better you wrote on read it that the planet money newsletter is like meaning a noir detective in the parking garage for evidence exchange and incriminating photos can you confirm what's incriminating about the newsletter found some deep dark secret that once did you know how people sign up pure orgy slash planet my newsletter you nailed it all right the company that was sending in messages to try and get in touch with Logan ice is called Pando P. A. N. D. O. and here's a version of the pitch Pando was making to Logan let's actually you're a first round let's make the numbers bigger and more exciting your first round pick as a first round pick you have expected future MLB earnings of forty five million ars grave I'm in I think everyone's excited about the happy about that this is Charlie Olson he's Pandora's co-founder the problem is your odds are like a coin flip you're you're you're outcome is going to be some version of a coin fifty percent of the time you're gonNA average ninety million dollars amazing fifty percent of the time you'll make less than one not amazing not amazing Charlie's point is that even if you're one of the most promising players in the world sure there is a chance you will become one of the richest people in the country there is also a chance your future baseball earnings will be almost nothing you might get injured you might hit up streak of bad luck you might just not be as good as everybody thinks so the companies pitch to players like Logan Ice is this wouldn't it be nice if you and some of your fellow baseball players could somehow share the risk of this brew title winner-take-all career that you've chosen this idea is called an income pool and it's pretty simple like logan just get together with a handful of other players in his shoes so still stuck in the minors still making up kiss and then Logan and these players would make a deal if one of US makes it to the majors and exit big then that person will kick back part of his big money to the rest of us in the pool where baseball can be zero sum when your best friend gets called up and you didn't now of a sudden when your best friend gets called up a little bit of you did panda thinks this income pool idea would work for all kinds of else but the company is just a few years old and starting out with baseball and we spent a ton of time asking Charlie Olson questions about how this would actually work for example is there a level of baseball player that is too low to join pool no there's there's nothing that's too low so what about right now Kenny Malone in studio eligible to be a client of Panos Okay so yes Kenny you have to be in the minor leagues at least but okay so let's just say you and I are interleague irs yes here's how this would work and and we need hundreds of people for our pool it could be as small as just you and me making a deal yeah so then then Tom and I make this agreement and we need to set up the terms of our pool and we could we could set whatever terms we want but there there's a kind of standard contract that baseball players use and to explain it I was GONNA make the big leagues and we're in this pool together here's how this would play out Tom will not have to pay anything until he is earned one point six million dollars playing in the major leagues and once I reached that one point six million level all kick ten percent of the money I make after that back to the pool Pando is gonNA take a ten percent cut of our pool so that's one percent of Tom's additional money essentially that's their business model but but theoretically this is great wait for me like I'm stuck in the minor leagues with my Crappy Minor League salary and it is now subsidized by Tom's giant big league contract and maybe Tom Mix thirty million dollars a year suddenly a millionaire even though I'm in the minor leagues and the contract runs until my career is over or until I paid twenty million dollars into our pool so that's a version of the income pool plan pitched over the phone to our real minor leaguer logan ice shoot now
