What's Happening in Arizona Can Happen to Any Christian School
"You folks at Liberty University. Many of you folks have done your student teaching work in Lynchburg. What if the Lynchburg city council woke up one day and decided, you know what? We don't want to have any Christians working in our public school system. The same thing could happen to you folks in in Jackson, Tennessee at union university, or right outside of Chattanooga at Lee university. Great Christian schools. Churning out incredible, incredible teachers. But they could be denied jobs if in fact they profess faith in Jesus Christ. Now, here's the curious thing. We have a lot of I know we have a large and very diverse audience. We have Christians and atheists we have Jews and gentiles we have people who are conservative people who are liberal people who are straight people who are gay, what I'm curious about, where is where are all the conservative gay folks out there? Why are they not rising up in outrage over this? Where is the gay community at large because right now they are citing with the school board and the school board is doubling down. And they're saying, you know what? We do not want Christians in our public schools. This ladies and gentlemen is the hill to die on. This is the this is the moment where you have to stand up. And you have to fight back. And I'm glad to see people standing up and fighting back, but I am really surprised. By the numbers of people who came out and said, yeah, we don't have a problem with this. We think that's a good idea. Christians have no right to be in public school classrooms. As teachers.

We're learning that one person is dead in fairfax county after a crash this morning involving one vehicle on Braddock road and the fairfax county Parkway. The driver, the only person in the car was pronounced dead at the scene, county police are continuing to investigate what caused that crash. Following yesterday's first anniversary of the war start in Ukraine, we're hearing from a Virginia pastor from there who has a lot of friends and relatives who still live in Ukraine. The anniversary especially is creating a little bit of anxiety because Russia is so unpredictable Andrew Moreau's a pastor and Lynchburg Virginia has been to Ukraine three times over the past year to help with humanitarian efforts, he says when he talks to people he knows who live there right now. I'm getting some messages from friends who are asking for prayers or letting me know that they're taking a few days off just to see what happens for the anniversary. "I was in Lynchburg, Virginia. At Liberty University, for an amazing event, Ryan helfenbein, Ryan is amazing. And he heads up the faith and freedom center at liberty. Ryan put together this conference, Sean Foyt was there, Liz Wheeler was there, Megan basham, my hero, Megan bed she's amazing. We spend time with her. Ralph Reed was, I mean, all these friends and it was amazing and lieutenant governor mark, was it Robinson, North Carolina, who's just a fighter. It was the whole thing was incredible. But I had to leave the next day because now this is the thing. I knew I was going to be in Pittsburgh because I spoke yesterday three times at grace life church pastor pastures book and Amy schaeffer invited me to speak here in Pittsburg because I was in Harrisburg. We met whatever ten days ago when I was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. So they invited me to be here. And then I get a phone call from you, Alvin seda, telling me, hey Eric, Saturday, which was two days ago, when you're going to be in Pittsburgh, guess what's happening in that neck of the Woods. And I said, what's happening, Alban? I've been telling the people what was happening. A pregnancy center in Lynchburg, Virginia was vandalized early Saturday morning. The Lynchburg police department says it happened at the blue ridge pregnancy center on old forest road. Investigators say the building was spray painted with graffiti in multiple windows were broken out. Virginia governor Glenn youngkin says state police are ready to support local law enforcement with the investigation. He tweeted that breaking the law is unacceptable and that vandalism is not how we find common ground. Virginia residents still have access to abortions in the state, but youngkin has expressed support for a 15 week ban on abortion in the state. Although COVID shots were finally available for young kids, a Kaiser family foundation survey indicates quite a few parents have questions and concerns. And the DMV download spoke with a doctor about it. Doctor Monica Gandhi, who teaches medicine at the University of California, San Francisco expects some parents to get kids vaccinated now, and some to wait a little while. I think that it'd be great to get vaccinated for the fall, but no mandates for school because we really parents are not ready as many parents are not ready and we don't want to disrupt learning. The Moderna vaccination involves two shots while Pfizer's takes three, but Gandhi says there was actually more protection from symptomatic COVID, even mild infection with the third dose of Pfizer. And it kind of astonishes me as it clearly does you from the way you've written the book that we have drifted away from this. So before we get into the book itself, you're a constitutional lawyer living in Lynchburg, Virginia, your liberty grad, you said your dad is a liberty grad. What led you a lawyer to write a book called God Caesar and idols, the church and the struggle for America's soul. Well, my background really is in conservative activist politics. That's what's really floats my boat, if you will, and I've done that since I was a teenager. And after the, and I guess I went to law school specifically with the idea of learning the law learning how to apply it to politics. And of course, Liberty University school of law, you get a terrific education and the biblical foundations of American law. But after the 2017 elections here in Campbell county just outside of Lynchburg, Virginia, where I live, watching a elections for school board here in Campbell county, where some candidates were talking about, hey, we need to take a stand against the transgender craziness ideology in our schools and others were saying, no, that's not a big issue. Let's just find more tax money to support more programs. And I watched my community right here in the shadow of Liberty University. "You can't just go to Lynchburg and decide, I'm going to go to lunch per Tennessee and have a drink in honor of Jack Daniels, but skip the tour, because you probably know this, but it's a dry dry county. County. So the only way that you can be drinking Jack Daniels out in is to either do the tour, which includes tastings, or there's a restaurant and I'm blanking on the name of the restaurant, where they do are allowed to serve it as part of one of the tours. So if you go on their website and you're like, I want to do the tour that includes dinner that takes you to the only restaurant that's allowed to serve it. And it's because it's part of the official experience. He went and did the tour and I went and explored Lynchburg, which is a really cute town. And if you want to spend more time in the area, I could have easily done a full day just there too, but you got to make choices when you're on a road trip. And there's really cute shopping downtown like little old stores that are labeled like hardware store, but they're now like a T-shirt shop, but and then also something that we did my son and I did while we were waiting was we went and found Jack Daniel's grave. It's not super hard to find, but it's not one of those things that I found advertised on most of the lists of what to do in Lynchburg. I found it, you know, the American roadside website that lists every monument. That's where we found it. I literally was able to drive the car right up, which was great because it was raining. It was like pouring. And if you loved whisky, you probably could get away with though I'm not promising you to get away with having a drink of whisky. At the gravesite, like a little one, but you have to make your own risk analysis. But I wasn't going to be doing that. I just wanted to go and see it. I thought it was cool. And it does say, Daniels on it really big. And I'll send you a pic of it, Chris. It was really cool. That was fun..

And there's so much I need to talk about. Where do we start? I mean, first of all, let me say this tonight. I'm speaking in Marietta, California tomorrow. I'm speaking in San Diego. On Friday, I visit the Babylon bee offices in upland California on Saturday and Sunday I'm in Thousand Oaks. Like, it's a crazy tour. It's a book where is atheism dead? I might have never mentioned it on the program before, but it's my new book. And the feedback I've been getting has been amazing, but I want to read an email that I got that is a little strange and I think it's important to share everything. I want to be honest with my audience. Here's an email. It says Eric. This is from Tammy. I wanted you to know how excited I was for your new book is atheism dead to arrive today at my door. And the icing on the cake, it smells good. Love me some new book smell. For the record, not every new book smells this nice, thanks, Tammy. I think she might live in Missouri, but we can't say, because she may have enemies who are against the whole new book smell thing. But Chris, have you ever heard about new book smell like I've never thought I've heard of new car smell? I mean, I kind of get it a little bit. It's sort of like the opposite of going into a library and what that smells like there, baby. Like urine yes, perhaps. No, but that's a new thing. New new book thing. Anyway, I just had to share that not only is the book being reviewed extremely positive of if you read some of the Amazon reviews. I was astonished, people are really loving it. Of course, that's every author's hope, but when you read so many reviews that say really nice things, you can't help but be thrilled. Last night I was in San Marcos. I just posted that video. It was an amazing conversation. The pastor his name is Greg denim. He's an amazing person. He's become a friend. And he he's kind of like a cross between Greg glory and how we mandel. If they had a child. Does he pull a medical latex glove over his face and inflate it with his nose? Like Howie Mandel is it? As a pastor, he can't do that. But I think he would. But anyway, just a blessing to be here in California I'm watching people getting ready to surf out there, a lot of orcas and a lot of debts. I just want to say we saw a man cut in two in the jaws of an orca it was a gruesome thing at the same time it was beautiful, just to see nature working. So close. Okay, so I want to say that I'm going to be in Kansas City, Missouri, Houston, Texas, which talk Kansas again, Lynchburg tenant and Lynchburg Virginia, Atlanta, Georgia billings, Montana, I'll be back here in San Diego. I think at awaken church. There's so many wonderful limitations to come and speak about the book as atheism dead. And I spoke last night about this. I really think we're going to see paper dying shift. I think it's happening and my book will be a part of it that people will really come to conclusion that the thesis that atheism is a thing, it just goes away. It had its season, you know, kind of like Soviet communism. And then it just went away. And so you're going to see, you know, thoughtful, agnostics, at least, but I think atheism is dead. How Virginia Became Ground Zero in the American Culture War
"Virginia, which is now being called a blue state, how long is it going to be blue? Or is it going to stay that way? Again, the counties around Washington, D.C. are reliably blue for a variety of different reasons. The first reason of course is its proximity to the power center to the kingdom of Washington, D.C.. The second is the amount of universities that are in Northern Virginia, which is extraordinary. If you look at the amount of universities in D.C. and Virginia, the third of which is, of course, the fact that a lot of first generation low wage worker immigrants move to Northern Virginia to be able to make the life of luxury possible for so many people that live in Northern Virginia. And many, many of the refugee resettlement programs and the immigration, the mass immigration programs come to Northern Virginia, which has resulted in a totally different political type atmosphere to win an election in Virginia. And so Virginia Democrats have been able to win, reliably by running up the score Northern Virginia, being able to win in Richmond and win on the Virginia coast. The rest of Virginia is very conservative, by the way. Lynchburg is very conservative, Blacksburg isn't because of Virginia tech, but Virginia, Virginia used to be a very conservative state. Charlottesville is obviously not very conservative because the University of Virginia, Blacksburg is Virginia tech, Charlottesville is University of Virginia Lynchburg's Liberty University which is actually a pretty conservative area. Richmond is a very, very Democrat area, and so Virginia seemed dead on arrival for years. There have been great candidates before, running for governor as Republicans, and they always get disappointed. And right, of course, the current governor of Virginia's give and a Ralph northam of Virginia and he won against a pretty good candidate who was the Republican canon in 2017. I can't remember Virginia's goofy. Virginia has elections in off years for their statewide elected officials. So 2017, 2021, 2013, they do every four years and in coming up in a couple weeks, is the Virginia governor's race. And Democrat operatives all across the country, they are going a full court press they are trying to California recall the Virginia race. They're going all in. They're raising money they're bringing in surrogates, so Terry mcauliffe, who is the corrupt Clinton surrogate and wants to be governor of Virginia, I think, again, he was governor once, right? Years ago. He says, look, yesterday I had Jill Biden here. I've had Stacey Abrams. Now, let me just say this. After this i started to hear the dogs in our neighborhood bark and both my dogs were no longer skittish. I spent thirteen years in law enforcement. Everybody came out and had really positive adjectives to describe the meeting, calling it productive and constructive and even one calling it a success. But they didn't reach an agreement. I don't think there was an expectation they would. The White House certainly had downplayed expectations. Earlier in the day saying, and this is an exchange of ideas and that they were looking forward to a conversation. But this is on a meeting with the president would accept a Republican offer so going into that that's the baseline there. It was a conversation and they continued to come talk reason, but I think afterwards the statements for notable in the digging in of heels, the White House says that while there were areas of agreement, there were many areas that the president pointed out that the Republican senators don't address what he wants to Deal and that he is not going to settle for a package that the White House says failed to meet the moment so they get minus. He wants 1.9 Trillion. The Republican senators proposed a third of that, you know now the question is, Can they come down and up? Can you meet somewhere around 1.21 Point $3 billion, perhaps excusing trillion dollars. I should say, perhaps, but you know, the speed is also the issue right now. Room apparently no one spoke to her or explain what was happening. After doctors strapped into a device rendering it immobile rose demanded to meet. Dr eben alexander. She was about to go under and he had yet to introduce himself mere minutes before the operation began. Dr alexander stepped in front of her said. Hello and assured her that she was in good hands then she drifted into unconsciousness and the surgery began when rose woke up in the icu. She couldn't move the left side of her face. Dr alexander never warned her about the risks associated with her surgery and though he'd successfully eliminated her tumor half of her face was now permanently paralyzed. Ultimately rose filed a lawsuit. Her lawyers asked to see the paperwork she'd signed before entering surgery. But apparently dr alexander could only produce a single sheet of paper. It didn't even have rose's signature on it. Apparently dr alexander had misplaced a number of her forms. The case was eventually settled out of court shortly after. Brigham and women's fire dr alexander from their roster administrators have not stated whether or not the dismissal was related to the lawsuit. Either way dr alexander moved on to work for umass memorial medical center located in worcester massachusetts. Where apparently his careless behavior continued during one operation. Dr alexander reportedly left a small piece of plastic inside a woman's nick. In addition to the pain this caused her she needed another intensive surgery to have it removed then in august two thousand three umass suspended dr sanders for an error made during an operation. On another patient's brain stem the specific details surrounding. These punitive measures remain confidential by early two thousand seven. Jerry Falwell Jr. takes leave of absence from Liberty University
"Liberty University's president and Chancellor, Jerry Falwell Jr is taking an indefinite leave of absence the school making the announcement in a brief statement this afternoon, They said that Falwell agreed to go on leave after a request by the Board of Trustees executive Committee. No details were given as to what prompted the request. But a recent photo on Instagram had shown Falwell wearing unzipped pants with his arm around a woman who was not his wife. "Let's get into the story of Randy Lanier the weed racer yes. Yeah Oh Randy. Lanier was born in Lynchburg Virginia on September. Twenty second nineteen fifty four. His family moved to Broward County Florida when he was thirteen. There were few things a good old boy such as randy loved more than pot. It was like the pirate days trafficking into the US specifically really from Columbia was still unknown. Hey I want to say it's around sixteen hundred Aa I think is what it comes out to be something like that that's sixteen hundred dollars a month but only during the season no pay for spring training no pay for the off season so logan salary is just around eight thousand dollars a year not eighty thousand eight thousand six is but that doesn't account for living that doesn't account for shipping your car out that doesn't account for food granted they feed you a couple of meals a day Logan and to some degree all minor leaguers are kind of like living breathing lottery tickets when they pay off and make the majors they pay off huge earn millions and millions of dollars but for the vast majority of minor league players that never happens they toil away in the minor the League's making Bupkus and most do not have a giant signing bonus you see baseball is a winner-take-all career there is a very small chance of making huge amounts of money but more importantly there is a huge chance of making almost no money and as far as logan ice knew those really the only two options but one day a couple of years ago he was at the batting cages practicing and he got this message on Lincoln Lincoln in as like some of those recruiters and stuff that you automated message like yeah like that long do you remember what it said though I could maybe pull it up but see what I got here so he said Hey Logan it's been a minute it's also a small world because I was in the message was from an old baseball friend someone he hadn't seen in a while so there was some small commiserating about a particular minor league assignment Logan and gotten sucks that you got stuck in Mahoning valley last year which that he's one hundred percent right anyways I wanted to reach out because Logan's old friend explained that he was working for this new company that had an idea for how players might be able to deal with this super uncertain take all salary situation his friends message said that this company will quote help baseball players financially by pooling risk and invest listing in each other so logan's reading this and he's thinking this sounds fishy yeah no I I was the first thing I tell them saying hello and welcome to planet money I'm Kenny Malone and I'm Tom Goldman Tom Goldman covers sports for NPR.
