Malcolm Nance Discusses the Wayward Ukraninan Missle Hit on Poland

"This was obviously a huge relief this morning. The missile that hit Poland was probably a stray fired by Ukraine's air defense and not a Russian strike according to Poland and NATO. Yesterday, obviously easing concerns of an escalation. Just give us your thoughts. Well, first, you know, I've been in that relatively immediate area of where that strike. Where that missile exploded. A lot of activities were along the Polish Ukrainian border. And I did training out in that area, and we were under constant air raid alert. Constant air raid alert. And you know, these missiles take hours to fly to their targets. And they have to fly through several air defense zones. And each air defense zone, you know, has its own air control radars, air detection radars, and its batteries of surface to air missiles. And when you come into an area like where this hit, which is northwest of the city of lviv, those missiles had to have flown hundreds of miles to get there, right? To FYI you when they shoot those hypersonic missiles off of these bombers over western Russia, it's a 17 hour car drive from one end of Ukraine to the other. So it's a very long missile flight, even at three, 400 mph. It takes some time. So the air defense systems are waiting for you, right? And they try to engage you as far away as possible. In a 360° protective circle. And sometimes like this one, I suspect the missile went up, went to the east, tracked on the cruise missile, and one of them may even have destroyed the cruise missile, but they launch in Paris generally. Yeah. And the other one was tracking it as it went west and it just went stupid as we call it. And crashed into Poland. I'm glad that they're, you know, Russia didn't lose its mind and didn't try to do anything deliberately. I'm glad that it wasn't an accident. Because we need to tone down this whole, let's go to World War three stuff. Yeah. Because Ukraine, you know, was attacked by Russia. We all know that. But there's no need to really want to escalate. And then Ukraine is. I mean, when I heard this yesterday, I was like, ah, Putin's invaded Poland. Where does that sound familiar? I mean, because at first, you know, you didn't know what it was. So yeah, you're right. It's a relief,

"No, he says my wife works here in this city park, picking up garbage. And you know how little that pace. Inflation has sent food prices soaring in Ukraine and rent in the western part of the country in particular has shot up two because of all the new arrivals. Even if Mario was liberated, he says my house was bombed. It only has three walls. A survey by the international organization for migration in July found that 60% of Ukraine's internally displaced people also lost their jobs. The unemployment rate in the country is higher than 30%. At the unemployment center in lviv, job listings are posted to a series of boards in the lobby, our producer, Katarina mala fever, reads what's available. A sore. 7000 grimness. It's $150 per month. This is electro gas welder, 12,000, which is $300 per month. Rent for a single bedroom apartment in lviv, a local realtor says, is about $270 per month. So it's difficult yesterday situation for these people, all that grizzly is the unemployment center's director. He says it's hard even for his own staff. The lviv regent unemployment office has just laid off 40% of its own workers. Because we have no money. Not enough money for our system. Instead, he says money is being reallocated for defense purposes. The national bank of Ukraine which compiles economic statistics did not respond to requests for comment about social welfare spending. But it's clear the system is reeling. In June, the government announced that people must take work offered by unemployment offices like this saying everyone must either fight to defend the country or work for victory. When people didn't want to take this job, we didn't pay employment benefits. That's the situation, Helen siege is facing. She moved to lviv with her husband in 8 year old daughter from hard Keith, after weeks of constant bombing and shelling. I'm here in just because my child because I don't want to hear Ryan because she's afraid to die. A girl is not supposed to be science such things. She was crying, asking for help. Would help I couldn't help her because I couldn't help myself. Lost her job in sales at a small manufacturer when it closed, because she says half of its staff was mobilized to fight in the war. The unemployment center here has offered her a job as a college professor based off her college degrees. A job she's never done and doesn't feel fit for. And a job she says, that won't pay her enough to live in lviv. It's not enough, of course. It's not enough for professor three people. But like many others, she's not sure what else to do. Bills, even in war, still need to be paid. Nathan wrap and PR news, lviv. You are listening to all things considered here on WAB. This is the last day of our fundraiser. High-level talks in Ukraine yield little reported progress

"Turkey's leader and the UN chief met in Ukraine with president Vladimir zelensky in a high powered bid to ratchet down a wall raging for nearly 6 months But little immediate progress was reported meeting in the western city of lviv far from the front line the leaders discussed prisoner of war exchanges and security at a Russian controlled nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine The leaders talked about arranging for UN atomic energy experts to visit and help secure the zapier nuclear plants UN secretary general Antonio Guterres said the plant must urgently be demilitarized At the mighty endangered physical security of the Louisville plant And the facilities give us not be used as part of any military operation Earlier this summer the UN and turkey broke it in agreement clearing the way for Ukraine to export 22 million tons of corn and other grains stuck in its Black Sea ports since the Russian invasion Guterres hailed the agreement as a success I'm Karen Chammas

Dr. Irwin Redlener on His Work With Traumatized Ukrainian Children

"You are as one of the superheroes of the Stephanie Miller cinematic universe. You are in Poland doing helping Ukrainian kids. You tweeted we met with a hundred teachers from schools in lviv, talking about psychological trauma. They're seeing among children who mostly with mothers had to flee for their lives from towns in eastern Ukraine, teachers having a rough time we are committed to helping. Just talk to us a little bit about what you're doing over there. Yeah. So the thing is that since this atrocious horrendous brutal war began when Russia invaded Ukraine, and nobody thought they would, although they were warning signs, we also added, they're not going to really do it, but they invaded and bombed the hell out of and they still are eastern Ukraine and southern Ukraine. And it's caused a, what's called the largest forced migration movement of a population since World War II in Europe. And so in effect, what we've had are all these lives of families and particularly children that have been disrupted because it's either moved from the far east of Ukraine to the far west of Ukraine or they moved out of Ukraine entirely, which is why we're in Poland. Huge numbers, millions of children and most with their moms because their dads are both mainly in the military. These children have moved to other countries predominantly Poland where they don't speak the language. They left with hardly any of their possessions, including leaving behind things like, you know, their eyeglasses. And they're living in these very very, you know, sometimes extremely bad shelter situations, although the Polish people have been incredibly generous. So our mission over there with this our new foundation, the Ukraine action project, our mission is to try to make sure the kids are in school. If they're in school, are they learning in what language are they learning in? And hopefully it's Ukrainian. And secondly, to make sure they don't have medical problems that would interfere with learning. But part of the problem is these kids are so psychologically traumatized. And the teachers, anywhere, teachers would have trouble dealing with classes like this. So one of the things that Karen, misses goom is working on is having the training programs for teachers to learn how to deal with lots of very traumatized children in the classroom. That's what we're working on. Both of those things.

Russia Wants to Cut off Humanitarian Aid in Western Ukraine

"There is a Australian major general retired named Mick Ryan. And he has been writing about the war since begun, and I've enjoyed his work, and I think it's pretty thorough. And he said, last week, the Russians fired long-range missiles from aircraft to attack targets in and around the cities of lviv in the Russian strikes on east western demonstrate western cities according to this major general demonstrate that the Russians are trying to avoid casualties on the ground. And as a result, are inflicting all sorts of damage, to buildings, and targeting civilians. The western part of Ukraine is the strategic bastion for the Ukraine's military. And is a place also where the humanitarian supply are coming in. And so more of the Russian missiles are aiming towards western Ukraine. To prevent the humanitarian missions and prevent rearmament.

Legacy Code Wisdom with Alexey Chernov

"Alexey Chernov is riven. Rows consultant at jet thoughts over the years he's hughes-built MVP's for several products and health fast-growing products to improve their legacy code scale up the remote team and achieve effective development process. He's a strong supporter. QUARTER OF TD and cope simplicity. It's great to have you on the podcast today. Thanks for inviting me. I'm very excited to be here today. Fabulous Alles Alexi. What is your develop origin story? Yeah I feel like my story is Rather boring because I think I always knew that I would like to be involved in the tech field preferably in software development and It started when I was studying in systems programming in university and my first programming languages for Bass Kelsey and Assembler and and it was the third year of my studies. When I started learning web development? I will miss my friends from university. I joined small company will be worked on Web applications and I was really excited about that and At some point I realized that it. I'd love to continue fulfilling myself in that field and this eventually led me to jet thoughts. Yes I've been working for the last five years and might default tech stack is Ruby on rails and Java script. Usually it's either react of you chess. I also have small experience with Brighton and once I've worked to with a dog night application and beside that's In my free time I enjoy trying new technologies in my bed projects just to discover some new things and keep myself up to date. What is your specific experience with Ruby on rails? Do you remember what version it was whenever we started using it yeah. I got acquainted with rails on one of my first jobs There was a requirement of moving the application from beach to ruby on rails stack. And if I remember correctly it was rails version too that we use there and my first impression was like low. He can build up an APP so fast rail and I think I can say that I fell in love with Ruby on rails down and Since then I've been working with rails on a regular basis makes it Seven years ear scenario up to this moment that's fantastic. We're lucky to have you in the community so as a new thing. I also WANNA start filling in listeners. As to how I'm getting guests on the podcast and the reason this happened is because I saw several open source starter. Kits specifically for view J S and rails being published by jet thoughts so I reached out to jet thoughts in spoke with Paul and he recommended bringing Alexi onto the podcasts. So Alexi can you tell me. Abou- How jet thoughts is and what you do. Yeah sure jets. Hawks is a weapon development company with more than ten years of experience in Ruby on rails consultant Out Text deck is Ruben. Real Jealous CRIPS and be used. React native a tip for Mobile Development We have developers who contributed to rail. SCO LANC on lower now other those that we use us on a daily basis Usually we work with small and mid sized start ups and We provide them with screened Senior developers to extend their team We prefer to have long term engagement with companies. So we don't. I usually take a look of project simultaneously and one one of those things that I really like about. Jet Thoughts is that one of its. Let's keep principles is to have a clear and transparent Development Process euless tried to keep the product owner in the loop with regular updates. It's and we also regularly ask him for feedback and Also jets had a huge expertise in setting up development flow in remote distributed teams. We help to help to startups to reach serious around. and to scale up the product development unsuccessfully and full for one of the lost ground projects we were working on We have increased the development team from five to twenty people and actually that was an interesting experience because we had to deal with a legacy application which had a lot of problems technical depths how how many developers total mortgage thoughts. It's about fifteen developers for now in Lviv Ukraine but the team. He's he's working remotely. So we do not have an office and we keep communicating remotely within. Also so let's dive into the topic of why you onto the show today. And that is legacy code. So I imagine a lot of us have different definitions. The legacy code is but I'd love to hear Yours Alexi. Yeah that's true that there are a lot of definitions of it. First of all I liked like to say that legacy code is not the goal that is old or outdated but rather that is written without testing strategy in mind the definition is rather blurry but essentially we can say that legacy code is the code without tests and at the same time that is very a heart test. That makes a lot of sense. So do you have any tips. Maybe specifically around Ruby on rails on how we can improve existing legacy code base. Yeah this can be held at work. It's hard but I think it's possible if done it originally going. Carefully step-by-step We can imagine that our -plication with legacy code is like a person that is sick Like a sick person. The application is still able to work but his much less effective than usual and like a human's body fighting with the disease. We need to do. Two main. Things stopped. this disease from spreading and start proper treatment and I hope Aw listeners forgive me for such a simplification of humans body functions so to stop the spreading of the legacy code wrote First of all we need to to admit that problem exists when it technology said and We need to talk to the team and ask everyone to stop up pushing new code without testing it I It also can be tempted to try and say to product owners that we need to stop feature development until we do that factor in but unfortunately this doesn't work Stakeholders and odds usually too happy about about the fact that development team is not working on features so to continue as treatment. We need it took actually tried to increase this coverage and simplify the process of Af- running tests And this step It's usually hard to add unit tests so I would start with writing system Tests because they're easier to add although there Hudson to support But I think it's still the best approach in the beginning and eventually when we're more confident bent and Dakota's more predictable We can switch to unit destin stats if we have problems in the existent test suite. We need to fix it. The most common problems is that are dependent on external factors factors. They can call. Some externally be is services In in other words they are interacting with the outside world Take that so we can use gasset's approach like VCR to save the results of such goals and reuse it pre played in the future richer and we can disable net connection with trump's web. Mock and fake our oh external requests And other thing is that can be time order related which is which is very nine and this should investigated fixed to an overall? I think the main goal is to have isolated reminds tests to have some some solid grounds in a form of stable master branch to continued development.
