in more than 120 countries I'm Charlie palette This is Bloomberg Your listening to balance and power with David Westin on Bloomberg radio Still to come this hour the information war I talk with the CEO of radio free Europe about efforts to inform the Russian people about events in Ukraine But first China is now battling its biggest coronavirus outbreak since the pandemic began in Wuhan more than two years ago with reports that president Xi went before the Communist Party's central committee to urge the swift containment of the spread of the epidemic I talked to Craig singleton senior fellow at the foundation for the defense of democracies about the crisis For much of the pandemic I would say China's COVID case loads remained well below that of other developed nations At least according to Chinese statistics that said China's COVID mitigation strategy heavily on mass lockdowns in some cases for tens of millions of people for weeks at a time China also repeatedly delayed the adoption of highly effective western produced mRNA vaccines relying instead on two of its less effective domestic alternatives Also troubling is that in places like Hong Kong less than half of residents over age 70 even elected to get vaccinated often citing concerns about the potential side effects in efficacy of the Chinese vaccines And so what China is learning the hard way is that policy is put into place at the start of the pandemic or frankly no match for our virus and the variant that is constantly mutating and adapting So we take those in order if you would why the delay in the mRNA approach was it to not invented here issue And by the way they fully opened mRNA vaccines now They haven't embraced them yet And some of there have been a number of concerns and questions about why there has been this sort of repeated delayed there I think big picture for Xi is that this COVID search just could not be occurring at a worse time for him He's already grappling with a rapidly cooling economy a host of other domestic challenges at the same time China has largely perceived as having tacitly backed Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and now finds itself pretty isolated I think that central to China's pandemic messaging though has been this notion that China's government was in effect managing the crisis much better than its democratic rivals namely the United States And the Chinese Communist Party attributed those perceived successes to Xi's hand out hands on management style although tensions have been running very high in China as the population has had to endure with the effects of these very painful draconian lockdowns And these latest omicron surges are likely just to further undermine Xi's domestic credibility and his governance narrative particularly as ill equipped Chinese hospitals face a massive uptick in COVID-19 cases The Xinhua news agency says that president Xi is now urging the swift containment of the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic Is there any occasion they're changing course or are they just doubling down on their sort of lockdown approach It certainly sounds more like staying course approach Mass lockdowns in some of Chinese China's major provinces including several of China's economic powerhouses It's almost certain to lead to further declines in China's industrial output placing pretty significant stress on China's already strained supply chains making matters worse as Russia's invasion of Ukraine with oil and commodity prices spiking These sort of sustained lockdowns could worsen China's record high unemployment rate which remains stubbornly above 5% for the last few quarters despite the.

"It has been increasing over the past several weeks we've been seeing that At the same time the overall case numbers have been relatively stable with some increase in the last few days Officials say it does not appear the sub variant will cause more severe illness than omicron but believes it's more transmissible The city remains in what the health commissioner calls a low risk environment He says there are no further changes coming anytime soon to coronavirus restrictions Toyota is temporarily stopping operations at many of its plants across Japan This is due to the major earthquake that struck earlier this week and its impact on supply problems Come next week 18 production lines at 11 plants won't be in operation for three days A lost sheep is now 88 pounds lighter Mark Mayfield explains a hiker discovered the sheep on an Australian mountain and it had at least 6 years of wool on him After being contacted by the hiker an owner of a local animal sanctuary called an expert to shear the sheep The Shearer said the sheep's condition improved quickly once the wool had been removed The sheep who has since been named Alex in honor of the mountain that it was found on will continue to live at the sanctuary I'm Mark Mayfield a Wisconsin woman is hoping her four leaf clover collection will bring her more than just luck but Tina rye claims to have collected a four leaf clover for 258 straight days She's asking the Guinness Book of World Records to create a new category for her accomplishment Guinness told Reich she would have to pay for an adjudicator to visit her to verify her collection Reich said she collected one clover each day from March 22nd until December 4th last year I'm Brian shook And I'm Charlie pellet at Bloomberg world headquarters Stocks had their best week since 2020 for the week the S&P 500 Index advanced 6.2% NASDAQ this week up 8.2% Technology stocks led today's gains Jim Paulson is chief investment strategist at loof old whedon capital He says stocks are attractive In the combination of pessimism which is really elevated after about a year of going nowhere And with strong fundamentals I think is a buying opportunity for investors Jim Paulsen of Luthor whedon Wall Street is wrapping up a week in which we saw liftoff for the Federal Reserve Katie Kaminsky is chief research strategist at alpha simplex group Traditionally whenever the market has been faced with the rate hike we usually have sort of a sell off in some way So I was pretty impressed that the market was relatively calm this week about this decision but maybe that's because everybody knew it was coming Katie Kaminsky of alpha simplex Well as for the path of Federal Reserve rate hikes Patrick palfrey is senior equity strategist at Credit Suisse securities I think the question is how many hikes can they get in in 2023 as well And ultimately it appears that they're looking to do 7 potentially this year And then four potentially next year Patrick palfrey of Credit Suisse General Motors has bought out the SoftBank vision fund one stake in self-driving startup crews for $2.1 billion ending the Japanese investment firm stake in the business Stocks advanced today with the S&P rallying 51 points up 1.2% NASDAQ up 279 up by 2% The Dow Jones Industrial Average up 274 a gain of 8 tenths of 1% Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Charlie palette This is Bloomberg This is Bloomberg best Bloomberg radio is everywhere I always accurate and precise We'll work really one of the places that's reporting facts Your communication capabilities are wonderful for our business I'm Ed Baxter And I did these Pellegrini on this weekend edition of Bloomberg best Russian contagion and a global default risk We're looking at something like the early 80s when we had dozens of defaults in a very short period of time It could happen here and it could happen now Do investors have false expectations about the fed The bond market and the stock market together are pricing kind of a magical scenario where the fed Titan's.

"Break We want to look ahead to markets in the new year with the view from Jim Paulson chief investment strategist at Luthor whedon Jim has been one of the biggest equity bulls on Wall Street but when it comes to 2022 his outlook is a bit more nuanced Paulson spoke with Bloomberg's Jonathan farrow Kaley lines and Matt Miller Let's listen in We're going to have a very volatile year ahead of us But I would argue that it's probably going to be the best in the first half of the year I know we're up here A lot of people think we might give some of this back As we enter the new year that could happen But I think we're going to maybe go above 5000 during the first half of the year on excitement that finally maybe moving the COVID from pandemic to an epidemic and on the realization I think increasingly that inflation is moderating But then I think in the last half I think we're going to see bond yields come up and the fed tapering and maybe raising rates more aggressively I think we could have a bit of a struggle in the latter half of the year That's why I think we'll end up around 5000 for the S&P But I think the broader market outside of the S&P 500 does better this coming year than the S&P 500 overall Well let's talk about the bond yields going up because I know you see the tenure at two 25 at year end next year Obviously we're about 75 basis points south of that at the moment Does it matter the ultimate rate how high the rates ultimately go or the speed at which they get there Do you think that is a move that will happen quickly and that that is actually what will be upsetting to the equity market That's a great question Kelly One of the things that I've looked at recently looked back to 1926 and looked at all the months that we've been under 3% ten year yield I've got to tell you when you're under 3% ten year historically we've only been there about 25% of the time It is a gift to equity investors Because the stock market what it does is almost 21% annualized annualized monthly returns and it has negative monthly returns a third of the third less compared to when you're above 3% The return when you're above 3% is 10% what is 21% below One of the things I think is important for investors to focus on is rates are going to go up but boy I'll tell you until you get back above the 3% level the history of the stock market is awful encouraging for stock investors That doesn't mean that a rate rise of 75 or a hundred basis points over a short period of time won't bring a correction I think we will get that later this later next year But I think it's important to realize not to totally run away from stocks at least until we get back above 3% tenure Well is there no alternative Jim I mean is that part of the thesis or.

signs of slowing both the data and the experts point to the omicron variant causing record transmission of the virus but less severe cases Graham cook is Professor of infectious diseases at imperial college London There's still singing very very high numbers of cases in the community And that's really a record highs and we're seeing that in many countries But at the same time we haven't yet seen that really reflected in the number of cases going into hospital Graham cook had imperial college London says most hospitals are not showing severe strain from this outbreak U.S. cases are hitting fresh records including almost a half million new infections just yesterday at the same time deaths are actually declining That's according to federal health officials who say new cases are up 60% South Africa It's a welcome result It's almost around pushes the world to a record number of daily cases and evidence emerges at the variant can evade some vaccinations These results could also help explain why there are not as many hospitalizations and deaths following the exponential growth in new cases I'm Renee young Bloomberg daybreak Okay ranita thank you Financial markets appear to have shaken off concern about the S&P 500 is coming off its 70th record close of the year But what's in store for 2022 How about a strong start for stocks A lot of volatility and a slump in the second half That's the view from Luthor whedon chief investment strategist Jim Paulson It's probably going to be the best in the first half of the year I know we're up here A lot of people think we might give some of this back As we enter the new year that could happen But I think we're going to maybe go above 5000 during the first half of the year on excitement that finally maybe moving COVID from pandemic to an epidemic and on the realization I think increasingly that inflation is moderating Jim Paulson with Luthor whedon expects the broader market to perform better than the S&P 500 next year His year end target for the benchmark index is 5000 and stay tuned for more of that interview coming up shortly on Bloomberg daybreak While Nathan the Federal Reserve will once again play a major role in market sentiment next year expectations currently call for three rate hikes from the Central Bank but there's also the question of vacancies at the fed President Biden is expected to announce his picks for three open seats early next month Joe Lavon's chief economist Aetna Texas One of the problems the administration is going to face in 22 if they want to get all three filled is getting Senate confirmation and if they wind up going with somebody who is more extreme we saw for example what happened with the comptroller of the currency That's going to be very difficult for them to fill all three of those spots So they may have to pick more of a centrist or maybe a center left leaning economist type because it's going to be hard to get all three through right now And it takes its chief economist Joe lavonia spoke with our Washington correspondent Joe Matthew on Bloomberg sound on catch the program weekdays at 5 p.m..
