"And dark Phoenix, I hate to say it does exactly what you wanted to do, by the way, as a fan because it, it caters to its title, which is not happy, Phoenix. Not silly Phoenix. It's dark Phoenix now, and I think that there is. So I think that there is. I think your question is a various student nuance question, which is there is a expectation when it comes to big scale expensive movies? He's the you are going to be more passively and happily entertained, then in more challenging smaller scale films, where you feel like you're going to have to deal with some heavier stuff. And so I think that there, there is some level of resistance to dealing with that heavier stuff when you're going in on a Friday night with your box popcorn to something that you think is going to be about people that, just, you know, have raised the come out of there is, and are going to blow things up and suddenly revenue deal with, like trauma, and psychological disorder and death. And, you know, betrayal and things that are, you know, as saying darker, heavier themes and dealt with darker. Heavier way. So, you know, like I do think that they're, they're having said that I do think that one thing that's been great about the John RA of superhero movies, specifically is that they've allowed for so many different kinds of tones. Most of them comedic. But so many different kinds of tones you have gardens the galaxy. And then you have something like Logan. Logan's very heavy. Tone has humor in it, by the way, but as a very heavy tone, and you have thoracic Narok and you have endgame and you have that Zam and deadpool, and in so many different kinds of tones that I do think audiences are open. I just think there is an expectation that they're going to be a little more passively entertained than they would be if they were going to see a drama in the fall. What's next? What are you working on next? I know that your, your next project has already been announced that you'll be directing. Yeah. So I am directing again. Thank you for encouraging me. No, I mean seriously. I appreciate it. I that wasn't meant to be ironic. I mean I leave on Sunday to go finish prepping this movie called three or five which was a spy movie, and other John, that I love it was an idea that Jessica Chastain, and I came up with when we were on the set of this film for a female on samba all spy movie about women from different countries coming together from different agencies and. And it's more in the tone of Jason Bourne than JAMES BOND. So maybe it'll be too heavy again, but it's not quite as dark as it certainly not. And it's Jessica Chastain lupita Longo Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz fan fan, Bing bang, Edgar Ramirez Sebastian STAN, speaking of marvel so it's gotten amazing cast, and we're going to be shooting in London all summer and Paris for a couple of those weeks. And so I'll be directing that starting in July. Do you know what's after that, or have you not seen that far in the future? What's after that is going to be a little vacation. Okay, good. I'm going straight off this movie like getting on a plane a week later. But, you know, the television show that, that I created apple that I care an immense amount about, and we start I'm not going to direct the pilot of that. You just can't. What's the title is an untitled science fiction move science fiction? I knew that and, and it's global science fiction show, very character forward. And we start you in that in October for apple, and I will want to be on the set of that. But I won't be directing the great well as usual, you have been very generous with your time. I can't wait to see what you do next. Give it up again, for signing Ginsburg, thank you so much. And that's how the QA went down special. Thanks again, to writer directors Simon Kimber for coming down to chat about his latest film dark, Phoenix..

"That means wildcard Wednesday. Any artists song anything three one two nine eight one seven two hundred is EMMY who was that who requested? It was Donny is called my Baker. And I was questioned for man one. Okay. There you go. So welcome back everybody and Nick Gilio here on seven twenty WGN, and we are talking about we were talking about horror movies this morning, having some fun talking about the ones that really freaked you out. The really really scary ones and the sick and twisted one is that you'll never unsee. We've talked about some of those in. There are a lot of them. And Matt stork was joining us a little bit earlier in he is one of the founders of the windy city horror Rama which is a really really terrific horror festival. That's taking place at the Davis theater this weekend from the twenty six th through the twenty eighth. They've got a great lineup of events and movies. Both features and shorts that are part of the great horror genre. So check out windy city, haram dot com. If you missed the segment our interview, but that got me thinking, hey, let's talk more horror movies because it's one of my favorite. Subjection? It's my favorite genre of movies. And now, we're jumping into acting in horror movies that topic because the academy a lot of the sort of legitimate critics and stuff like that ignore or just completely dismiss the fact that horror movies can be great. They can be art. They can contain great filmmaking and they contend contain really great award worthy performances and over the years. There have been so many great acting performances in horror movies that getting word that I thought we should talk about and three one two nine eight one seven two hundred is the phone number. They actually wrote an opinion piece April wolf wrote this. On the on the rotten tomatoes page, and she says in two thousand eighteen Jordan Peele, get out jolted the Oscar status quo by earning nominations for four wards including best actor for you, flew up. It's totally it's not totally uncommon for prestige to plug of horror performance from the dirt and see it as a radiant flower that it is Ruth. Gordon won an Oscar for her. Erie turn in Rosemary's, baby. And the has happened in the past that there have been, you know, some really great performances in horror movies that have gotten the nut. But it's really it doesn't happen. Very often. And so everybody's talking now about lupita Longos incredible performance in in us. Google. She plays two distinctly different but complementary versions of the same character. And she's getting a lot of praise for that. And by the end of the at the end of the year when we get the award season. I really hope that she's remembered for the performance because it's a truly great performance. And you know, Jordan Peele is now you wanna kademi award forget out. He won a screenplay Oscar for it. So he's, you know, got respect from the Academy Awards. Maybe since they're starting to see that, you know, of these movies can be great, or at least, you know, the Jordan Peele movies could be great. Maybe more acting performances. We'll get the the recognition that they deserve. So. I want to jump into some of my some of my favorite acting performances in horror movies, and there are a lot. Here's Jerry WGN. Hi, jerry. How are you Nick? All right. All right. I just wanted to get in there that my scary movie. Was it the lie not the baby? Yup. It's alive. The the great killer baby movie that Larry Cohen may back in the seventies. Yep. Yeah. They gave me nightmares for a while. And then I think my the worst editor an empire movie would be Chad my Jobe, Jon Bon Jovi. Okay. Yeah. I didn't like him. And they by player movie laid. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. All right. Thanks, jerry. I Jon Bon Jovi, and the unofficial sequel to John carpenter's vampires. I this is what I remember about that as. When. Triumph of triumph. The insult comic dog voiced and portrayed by the great. Robert smuggle did a whole segment where they were hanging out with Bon Jovi, and and triumph said I understand that you're in a new vampire movie, and Jon Bon Jovi goes. Yeah. That's right. He's like, okay. Finally, a movie that requires you to suck. So. So. Yeah. Here. Here's some great performances. I don't know if you guys have seen this movie, the Bava Duke. It's this incredible Australian movie directed by Jennifer, canton was the first movie as a director, and she is so good in this movie. The baba is about this. This children's book it's about a woman whose whose husband died in a car crash, and she's got a very disturbed young boy who's trying to sort through the grief and the loss, and they find this book on the shelf about this character named the Buback. And and the book is this mysterious really scary character that starts to manifest itself in the house. And it's a really good and really scary movie and essie Davis is the lead. She plays the mother in the movie, and it is an extraordinary performance, a truly truly extraordinary performance that is really powerful. And and she really puts herself through the paces. It's a great performance one of the best performances in the horror genre in. Years. Deserve more recognition than it. Got. And of course, you know, one of the one of the great performances from last year that was ignored which I think was the best performance by any human being a movie last year, and that's Toni Collette in hereditary. She should have not only been nominated. But she should have won the Academy Award last year. Hereditary not only a terrifying movie, but she is incredible in it. And we've gotten a few texts that mentioned her obviously, eight one five area code says. It's assume that nobody knowledge Toni Collette. And then we've got a three one area code that also mentions Toni Collette and hereditary. This is this is a big one. I think because like she dominated that movie. It was a performance of such power in it varied. She had to play every kind of emotion. And it was an exhausting performance. And she also added to how scary that movie was because hereditary is a really really scary movie. Like, I mean, like massively scary. And I think has and will continue to go on to be revered as one of the most effective in scariest horror movies ever made. One of the greatest film directory debuts of all time, but Toni Colette is extraordinarily great in hereditary and deserved all kinds of recognition, and she should have definitely gotten. Definitely got an Oscar nomination at least at the very least eight one five area code says, Kathy Bates and misery. She actually did win the Academy Award for that movie. And also a lot of people have mentioned it. I actually included it here on the ones that I picked. Four hundred four area code says whatever happened to baby Jane the nanny scared. The hell out of me when I was a kid Bette Davis. Played a great monster in both seven seven three hundred Margot Kidder and sisters. Yes, she's created moving and Catherine nerve and repulsion both great both great performances. You know? I mean, those are those are great performances. I mean, one of them was directed by Roman Polanski who who was an academy favorite would go on to win the Academy Award and all that stuff. Someone includes nNcholas cage, and Mandy, which is a really crazy movie. That was that was released last year. And it's one of those you know, because nNcholas cage has has these moments of complete insanity. You know, he'll make movies where he's just like completely off the wall. It's like wh-. What what is what is nNcholas cage? Doing how crazy how insane isn't it goes cage. And sometimes that's good. And sometimes it's bad. Sometimes it's just embarrassing and weird. You don't know what the hell nNcholas cage is doing the movies bad, and the performance is ridiculous. But that's not the case with Mandy. This is good. Crazy. Nicholas cage. Like, really, really good crazy, nNcholas cage. So all right. What do you guys think great acting performances in horror movies, and I got a bunch more here? And I want to hear from you guys at three one two nine eight one seven two hundred great performances in horror movies. That's what we're talking about.

"People are still going to go to the movies like like Tim said last year made billions of dollars. So anyway, so that that will be interesting, but exciting movie news one of the sleeper hits that honestly, nobody's really expecting edge of tomorrow slash lived. I repeat that to me was my introduction to Emily blunt as an action star like somebody like when I was watching that. It was like she is incredible. So they're now in talks to do a sequel with Tom Cruise and Emily blunt returning. Yeah. I mean that was the article came out just this past week when they're like before like a while ago. Now, they're at least moving member her hearing rumors about anytime, you have success, especially on a film that nobody had the miss. It was after. Something she did it wasn't a quiet place. It was something else about official though, they are moving forward. One of the great comments on somewhere was thing that basically what they do is release the same exact movie but change the last thirty minutes. That would be clever and release it on. I right. Yeah. But I mean, I supervise it back into that world that movie I went into it not expect anything other than Tom Cruise being action star, which he is amazing the movie blew me away. That's great move. I wasn't expecting anything actually quick quick temperature of the room. Do you call it lived, I repeat or taro edge tomorrow that was what it was released as and then there were the tagline was lived. I repeat Ryan foreign markets. That was what sort of go by than they rebranded it for some of the releases lived, I repeat? Yeah. A little poster at the theater, I went to die repeat. And I'm like that's kind of a cheesy name in tiny letters edge tomorrow. Right. What's going on there? I'm trying to remember how you can even make a sequel because when when I heard this news, I was thinking back. I don't know how how we are spoilers of this film. But it has been a few years that has been a few years, but you give too much way. There's a whole plot device. They use that kind of explains the whole groundhog's day thing that we're dealing with. But I got the impression that that was kind of resolved result would have been wrong. I was like what if aid they were wrong or what if there's more than one of those macguffin 's? Okay. I know that we're referring to. Okay, they're very well could be multiple of those throat the world. We just saw one area. Okay. So be I I am totally down for tomorrow to live. I repeat again. Rummy Malik is there. There's a lot of JAMES BOND twenty five rumors recently lupita Longo was rumored to be the new bond woman. She is not going to be that kind of got denounced pretty quickly but Romney, Molly, it went from rumor to now pretty solid thing that he is going to be the villain in this new JAMES BOND film around me absolutely before bohemian rhapsody came out like I have been championing Rami for a long time because he is incredible. Now that he has an Oscar the really opened up the doors, ding. We'd be like bond, I think is just gonna put him in front of more is who might not have seen bohemian rhapsody or seen mister robot. 'cause they're JAMES BOND fans. So that should be great super excited for him. Have you guys seen? It was the that old HBO it was the band of brothers. But it was the one in the South Pacific who's in that nosing. He was in that the first experience with him, and you will not shake the cold creepy nece that he is able to convey in that he plays a super creepy character and trusting and if I if that immediately when I heard bond villain. I'm like if we can have that guy as a bond villain. It'll probably be problem. Best on on villains. We've ever seen his bond needs to go back to just having. Well, first of all, bundy's stubbing almost two ridiculous. But I mean it just. On film, the bond film, but go back to a villain. Where yet all it is is it is acting in the face and being that home cool collected villain versus.

And then I thought you know, what he's doing eight. We're doing five I guess it's not that big a deal. Well, and I thought that was interesting point he made about about the fact that he gets a different audience every night, right? If they've never seen it before that, you know, Kobe used to say Michael Jordan used to do it too. Is that I was like go into every game thinking that there's somebody in the building that is seeing me for the first time and might never see me again. Yeah, that's true. And I would think if I was doing a play. And I'm a big of, you know, I'm a big Broadway guy. Yeah. Me too. Every time. I go to a show like even when I went to avenue, q which is twenty years old last time, we tastic show, which is basically raunchy puppets. Yup. I thought to myself, you know, what they're doing the same thing every time. But if you're looking at into an audience of people that are paying a lot of money to see it. I would think that'd be incredibly energizing. You did plays. Right. Just a couple when I was younger, and but never really got fully into it. I wanna current now would I would pretty hard on the place there for a while. Yeah. Kind of wish I would I would have. But I gotta get back on the boards. You're gonna you're gonna start acting in plays again at fifty or whatever you are absolute get back on the boards cases. Speaking of of acting. Here's my idea for the Oscars. And I have a feeling this is what they're going to end up doing. Okay, you, and I both agree that no matter who they get they could get the biggest name in the world. They could get a Dell or Oprah. Or Jack Nicholson Denzel no matter who they got. And they could write perfectly in in. You know, put on a show that person's going to get criticized. Right. Yes. That is big of an event for for that. So do it without a host simply of the PA announcer say and presenting the award for best picture, here's Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, and they walk out do their presentation. Go move onto the next thing. Could that work doing no host Oscar, I think that's probably the favorite right now for how they're going to do it. I would do it a little bit differently. I would say the Oscars should be hosted by the cast of Black Panther. So each each introduction will be done by somebody from Black Panther, whether Chadwick bozeman or lupita Longo, Michael b Jordan or Daniel Qaluwa or Angela Bassett, and you just turn it into because to me that was the. That was the cultural cinematic movie of twenty eighteen did it get nominated for best picture while the Oscar nominations are not yet. But it's definitely get nominated for best picture. And I I'm voting for it for best. Do you do your votes for the sag awards? Yeah. I do. But just for those who don't have Oscar vote. I'm voting for Black Panther for best ensemble. I think it's fantastic movie. All right..
