"I'm Lulu Garcia Navarro and I'm Rachel Martin. North Carolina was one of the most closely fought states in this year's election. The departing president, Trump did win the state narrowly. But rural counties gave Republicans even more votes than they did in 2016 Steve Harrison from member station W F A A has more Robertson County is one of the poorest places in North Carolina it for textiles and indifference stuff with the bottom of the totem bone. That's Billy Brooks, who owns a used furniture store in Lumberton, the county seat to attract attention. The front of his store is adorned with statues of a dancing Elvis and Ronald McDonald sitting on a wheelchair. Brooks voted for President Trump and says he doesn't know anyone who voted for former vice President Joe Biden. I say, promising to 5% of what you got here working times, people. These people get up good work here in a bottom to steal got jobs. Those working class people in Robinson County, roughly 30% white, 25% black and 40% Native American. Democrats have long believed that demographics is destiny. But in this mostly rural county that's going in reverse. In 1976 Robinson gave Jimmy Carter his highest vote share of any North Carolina County with 80%. In 2000 and eight in 2012. It went heavily for Obama than Trump, barely one in a shocker four years ago. Earlier this month, he took nearly 60% of the vote. Philip Stephens, the chair of the Robinson County Republican Party, thinks the county will keep electing conservatives. We lay to the first Republicans here tow the state office in 2000 and 10 and 10. Years ago, every reporter would say that's just a one off an aberration. Stevens is eating at the Lumberton Chick fil A just off Interstate 95. Highway is now arguably the city's main street. While it's downtown is almost completely empty, he's with two members of the Lumbee Native American tribe. Ben Chavis, who voted for Obama, and then Trump twice says today's Democratic Party doesn't understand how hard people like him worked. Growing up as kids. We all had our fill of my choice, A tobacco field. Ah, cornfield or cotton for you. Men are not bothered by Trump's comments, like his taunting of Elizabeth Warren is Pocahontas. You say that was funny. Biden was nominated in part to appeal to men like them. But despite buying his working class background Chavis identifies with Trump, who inherited millions from his father. Trump would come to visit me in the tobacco fields. I believe I can't see Biden coming here to the swamp, and Trump did campaign at the County fairgrounds here. That's where he pledged to give the Lumbee tribe federal recognition, something buying it already pledged to do. But black voters in Robinson are still mostly loyal to the Democratic Party like Michael Mitchell in African American Barber in his late forties, I won't speak bad on the county that I'm from I'm old country boy from the dirt roads of Fairmont grew up cropping back it 78 years old. Being woken up at 5 30 in the morning to go work with a farmer. I didn't know for 12 hours a day 56 days a week, Mitchell says most of his customers back Biden, but some admired the president's push to reopen during the pandemic. A lot of people locally from my opinion, I think they followed him or for religious reasons. Pro life Churches to be open. People should be free to worship. Democratic political consultant Thomas Mills grew up in an hour away in rural Anson County. He doesn't hold much hope that Democrats concern things around in rural areas. Their best shot, he says, is that after Trump leaves Republican enthusiasm wanes. I mean, I think you're going to see a lot of white rural voters stay with the Republican Party. I don't think what you're going to see is a surgeon. Turn out like you saw this year. I mean, that was the trump phenomenon. But with President Trump showing signs he may run again. That phenomenon may last for years for NPR news. I'm Steve Harrison in Lumberton. It's morning edition from NPR News. I'm Rachel Martin, and I'm Lulu Garcia Navarro. I'm day framing along with Joe McConnell. Joe takes a look at the highway.

Golf's Biggest Winners of 2020

"All right. Sean it has been quite the year. it's not over. I'm not saying it's over. But i am saying we're here to get ahead of all those year end lists of winners losers best of we're tackling it midway through november where we winners this year. Did we win. I'm not confident that we were. There was a moment in the middle of september where you hung out with bryson into shambo after. He warned the. Us open lumberton potato. The me i'm gonna finish that offers a little bit pizza or game. We proceeded to miss a flight about six hours later. Yup and yet we were somehow still able to make it. Torrey pines south and talk to a bunch of the best golfers in the world in the next twenty four hours. Is the drop zone peaked. In twenty twenty. I think we had to peak. Then you the major winner. We go to play the next. Us open course at sunset. We have a great little afternoon at torrey pines. And then we hang out with zander and burger and morikawa and just korda the next day. And so yeah. That's where that's where we won. That's a really strong point. We didn't we didn't get to perform on the course as much as we like to in a typical year. But hey we're we're not really here to bring our golfed the people it's not about us you know who it's about it's about patrick. Reed patch agreed is by far one of the biggest winners of twenty twenty. All right start off years number one winner. Patrick reed defend yourself is one of the biggest losers of twenty nineteen. You'll remember that. He got stuck in some bunker fiasco in december of two thousand nineteen and we thought that it was gonna follow him alone for the entire year is is is swinging. You thought that people are gonna continue yelling at him while he was playing like. They did during his playoff in hawaii. David ferte call him. Captain oblivious which i thought was a great little nickname. Peter costas was telling people. I've seen patrick reed improve his lie in the rough numerous times and yet here we are twenty twenty. And we don't even do anything about this. We joke about it. We don't care about it. Patrick reed one in mexico. He contended i think you can say he contended at the. Us open he missed one cut after the restart. He's a winner this year. Because we don't care about what happened in past. This is where the phrase bigger fish to fry comes in our biggest problems. Man what a great time to be alive. Last december where our biggest worry was patrick. Reed kind of messing around in a waste. Bunker in the bahamas life was pretty good So yeah i mean. I think that that's a pretty fair one because look we just. Don't even talk that much about patrick reed right now. He's sneaky number eleven in the world. He's gonna be back on the us ryder cup team. If he if he keeps up you know his current run and play. He's been damn good.

"Maybe we'll start with. Way Your interest in Mahamoud. Way Did that how did that come about? When was that? So since by had? I probably I got interested in Mahamoud per se early in Grad school or perhaps a little bit before that might regional interest in Buddhism back in high school days early in college was mostly in San and I always expected that would be the form of Buddhism than I ended up practicing but the as says avid my then girlfriend now wife and I ended up traveling overland India in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, three into nineteen, seventy four, and then ended up at coupon monastery just outside. Katmandu where we studied where Rama Tipton yesterday in London Lumberton. And those famous co concourses which are still ongoing by merrily introductions allom Rim to the stages of the path of course. Llamas, OBA has a particular particularly in those days maybe a little. So I don't know He had a particular teaching style wary if you're at a month course, you could pretty much be sure that half the time was going to be spent in the lower rounds. So he did delight in. Those and Mama yesterday would, of course come in and remind us that we all had put a nature. So it was kind of A. Tough. Cop Nice cop routine and away. And you know he was he was a it was kind of overwhelming for me despite my interest. But as despite my having majored in religion in college and so forth. But. All the complication you know both the details of rim, how Karma works all the different realms, the scholastic arguments back and forth about beginning less mind an emptiness and so forth all of it was incredibly impressive. They were particularly impressive as practitioners as people who lived out what they had studied on what they were teaching but I I also began in in the few the few hours that were that I had hadn't disposal to to read. I think it was probably some poems by Miller wrap up where Branson book by John Blow Fouls, which just had a little bit of discussion. Mahmoud. and. The way the way I took it brightly. At times this reminds me a lot of ZAP it a bid, it short circuits all the detail, all the ritual, all the scholasticism. All those kinds of things that just tells you to realize the nature of your mind. So it appealed to me. Even that? Sort of a a hidden card. Yuba. Lurking inside this is fledgling gay look back. And I kept that in mind when. Year or so you're a half later I ended up graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, studying under shapes up SOPA. who was the first as far as I know the first Betton tenure at American University, certainly the first Tibetan guess. Who was tenured at American University and again to to study with guesses OPA both in the context of the graduate program that Wisconsin and at the deer park would a center as it's now called. Founded. In the mid seventies was too steep yourself in again are a great deal of the the complexity, the ritual, the richness, certainly of of the gaylord actual tradition and once again. The. Reading Mamo drawn decide what kind of balanced helped balance things out for me. So the number of the papers I wrote at Grad School, you know we're on the Mosit- as of India or or soccer punditocracy critiques of Mahamoud, draw various topics like that. So I, you know even in Grad school I I had this interest You know it sometimes said about Chinese practitioners. They're confusions during the day and Taoists. At Night I. Think a part of me that's was during the day and At night. Of course went when I began to discover that was that there was a whole Gaelic tradition of Mambo. I'd been vaguely aware of because it was a little translation that had come out at the library of Tibetan works in archives and. I read through that and So you know after I got Grad school sort of begun by my teaching career. I. Along with rank, of course, bring my dissertation into book form of pretty much everybody wants to do at some point are almost everybody wants to. Buy began to again sort of on the side begin to begin to investigate Gaylord Mabul dress, and so that's at least in terms of the genesis of this I. Guess That's That's how I would I would explain it. In a this dungeon have any. Teachers. Teaching. Mahmoud to you know you know during we went and saw on trump shays league. Once in Chicago he was notoriously late. He was typically drinking soccer when he was typically brilliant. So you know everything we had heard was true. And I think later in the seventies and into the eighties I began to to go occasionally to cognitive teacher but no, I did not have a regular. Teacher and I. I guess it's fair to say that I really never had a sort of regular teacher although in more recent years I've studied some weakening. European. Fortunately for us has his world had ordered in Minneapolis just. Just a few miles from where we live. So now, my my interest I mean I was interested in cognitive because if you're interested in mom will address even from the Gaylord stand going you clearly have to begin researching. Kogyo because. Even, some texts presents the. Is Fine Llamas. Book with. Alex. burs. The gala argue slash kagyu tradition of Mahamoud address. Implies that it's a kind of a sing credit tradition or a synthetic traditional might be a slightly better word So you and it's very clear that the first Panchen Lama who was one of the tutors of style on one of the truly great figures Gael history. He clearly was familiar with cargill literature and and it would seem with some Kogyo practices so. In my in the process of beginning to research, Ma Gala Mambo. Dry Inevitably had to begin reading at least a lot in In the calculator corresponded with scholars argue. Of various sorts Michael. Roy. David Jackson others. Of course the way these things work you you've you dig into you want your insulin gay look initially you dig into the cog you and then you get into the cockpit realize Oh God. All this comes from India and you've got to go back and look again at Sada. High and the other message you gotta look at the time. TRAS. Very, clearly, the textual a kind of sources for Mahmoud to discourse and behind that. Then of course, always these claims that there's a Sutra Mabul dry and so you begin digging around in sutures that may mention the word or may talk about ideas that are similar and so. I ended up going down this kind of rabbit, hole. That led me deeper and deeper back into Indian tradition and it started out as really odd. I'll do a few little translations and right any production suddenly was this Gargantuan projects that threatened to be about just about everything in. Indian. In Tibetan. Buddhism. Because in a weird way Mamo Dra, it was said, could be found everywhere in India, wants about bottles.

"In Lumberton. You're in Jersey, 11.5 Greatest gas station. Next Doyle of I suppose, is Route 38. The wall on Route 38. Lumberton Excellent service. Speedy there all the time, I think told collectors are ruder than gas attendant and I used to be a guest with them. And so even even told collectors today or you mean toll collectors back in the day. Collectors back in the day. I have easy pass, so I don't even mess with that. Yeah, See, That's the thing. I feel like the toll collectors that are left while some of them might be kind of standoffish. I don't think they're anything as rude as they used to be. Their jobs, their endangered the right. The jobs are in danger. And maybe there was actually a little you know, selectivity when they were paring down the jobs maybe wasn't seniority. I really don't know how it worked, but they seem like a little bit better. Tony. Thanks for your call. Although back in the day who I've had so man I could feel like like an hour with one of my one of my favorite because it was so unthinkably rude. One of my favorite told collector stories was I was getting off, I think in Carter et Off the turnpike. Yes, it was. It was God I could picture this lake was yesterday and it was a guy in the booth. And as I pull up, I'm the only car there. He's reading a paperback, and that's fine. Until that time, right? That's fine. It's not that it's just that I I stop and I'm waiting and I'm holding my ticket and the money out and I'm waiting and about 5 10 seconds goes by And then his eyes. Never leave the page. And he does this to me. He puts the finger up, like one minute. And like you just hang on until I finish my last page here, and he made me wait for him to finish all Todo find you exactly right? Yeah, I said nothing but man that was rude. Kate and see bright You're on New Jersey, one on 1.5 Hi, guys. So I'm thinking that the the day workers at nor care port O good 10 you have struck gold. Oh, Yeah, I wasn't even thinking of that group of workers down there. The meanest people around there they are mean. They're not just rude. They're not just curdle brusque. There actually mean they can be. Did you ever have like a major incident? Or is it just more the way they have been talking to other people as you observed Yeah, I'm in the airport a lot, And I just find them to be all of them. Just equally mean I haven't had like an incident where they were awful to me, but just mean and grouchy. He? Ah, mo. Most of it is what I've seen them do to other people. Yeah, Yeah. I don't have a great story, either. The last time I was there, though, the guy was just yelling out there. If you have any liquid water, and he was mumbling Excuse me, Would you say he was I'm so sorry. I just wanted to follow the instructions. You were mumbling, right? And that's just that he knows what his drill is. So he gets lazy. He mumbles it and then he gets pissed atyou for his mummy gave me a major league side, right? Eileen and Manus Kwon. You're on New Jersey, one of 1.5 Hi, dandy. How are you, Arlene? Good. So you know, I live in it as the shore area and we go Tio, not one of the big ones like while or whatever. And they couldn't be ruder, the gas attendant and what really gets me is we service our cars there, Right. So my parents, my brothers and sisters, my husband and I And one time the gas attendant. You know they had shut down. I made arrangements to pick the car up. I was leaving for a business trip the next day, and he refused to give me the car. You said you're not taking the car. I'm not opening up the shop to get your set of keys. And I said, no. I have another set of keys. And Lo and behold, he said. It was he threatened me with the cup simple before you call the cops. I'll call the owner because I have him on my cell phone. I have a cell phone number, and they had to work it out between the two of them. And you know, he was so apologetic. So you got your car was probably $1500 job that that I'm around. Yeah. And you got your car. Everybody's happy. I did like it. Eight o'clock at night. He just couldn't be bothered. It was freezing. Cold Winter night. He was sitting in like a little hut and I didn't come in for gas. My husband, you know, drop me off. And he was absolutely refused to give me the car. We've been going to them since 1997 were, if that's all it needs to be done is here's Here's the car. Eileen. Thanks for you. Come, I So ah little incident with our producer Jovi on the way to work with a gas station attendant. And so we're asking the question. Do you think generally speaking, Do you think that gas station attendants Would be maybe the rudest group of workers in New Jersey. Or is it some other group 1 800 to 8311.5 to 30 time for the news.
