"Added a couple of veterans signing Luke voigt and Tyler naquin to minor league contracts, we got a surprising number about the Milwaukee Brewers from last year. It absolutely shocked me when I saw this. We'll be talking about that with Sarah Lang's. The rangers, Josh young, is preparing what will be likely his first full season in the big leagues, of course, the rangers are a team of stars like a Jacob de Grom, they got Corey Seager that got Marcus Simeon, Josh young is someone who gave me an impact right away. He talked about preparing for the upcoming season. My little mantra right now is like leave no doubt to myself to anybody else. Just go out there and play the best baseball I can. Not peaking too early. I think is a big thing. Last year I said I peaked in January. To just try to build up through camp and be ready to go for the season. I didn't crush it in the out season and hit 7000 balls a day. But coming in, just making sure I feel good every day with whether that's what the routine BP just having small winds trying to find the bottom side part of the baseball that day. I'm not having any sloppy pads that kind of stuff just come in from being intentional with my work. He'd be a candidate for a big breakout season today. I'm going to ask Carl about major candidates for breakouts and also we're going to throw some over unders at wind totals that were getting from a bookie in Las Vegas. Taylor, what else you got? If you're going to be selling shirts in the ballpark, it just sort of surprised me, I guess, because generally when there's money to be made, like someone will make it. Yes. Obviously, there is money to be made here. And it's not just Dodgers fans on giant's turf. I mean, you know, you're telling me you can't get a Yankees cap at the trap or something, you know? Like, sure. There's got to be a market for that. I guess in the interest of general baseball, you would want people to be able to buy stuff that would represent their team wherever they are, wherever they go to a ballpark. Yeah. We will find a way to spend some money a and also just display our affiliation and deepen our attachment to baseball, but I guess I get it that also you want to feel like you're protecting your turf. If the team is sanctioning the vendor and clearly it is that the team can decide who gets to sell stuff in their ballpark and what they get to sell, then I certainly understand why they would say, hey, don't sell stuff this. Our rivals, so that everyone will be walking around in our rivals gear and showing up on TV and our rivals gear. Showing us up. Yeah, I share your surprise that it is a place that has proven itself to be somewhat immune from the capitalist impulse. But I think that that's kind of, that's kind of nice, you know, that you get to, you know, it adds to your sense of place that that is not a place where you see your rivals stuff being sold, right? But it is, this is our place. This is home and we get to say what it is. Here are the players, the featured players on the Mariners, team store website, ichiro, fine, Felix, fine. Anyway, I just, I think that you wanted to talk about the feeling of home, and I was willing to indulge you, but mostly this has become an opportunity for me to say, if an addict to a better job, like all of this stuff looks like you're at a corporate golf retreat and it bumps me out. So those are today's ethical philosophical dilemmas about baseball. In other news, well, first a quick Joey manassas update. Still good. Yeah. Out hitting one Soto and one Soto and Josh bell combined really did not think that would continue really thought that we would have to just like mention that while it was true and hope that it didn't change immediately. Wrote about him, my piece was published on September 2nd, and I was like, well, this has been fantastic, but how long can this keep up? I've got to get this article out before he slumps or something gets hot and the fun fact is not true anymore that Vanessa has outplayed both of the players who were traded and whom he was replacing when he was called up. I mean, it's still true. And people are treating him with some respect, some fear. Yeah. So as people were tagging us on Twitter to note that the braves were intentionally walking manassas, they free past them a couple of times in the past couple of games to load the bases in front of Luke voigt and then when they finally decided not to do that with a runner on first, he homered. Yep. So they should have intentionally walked him. That time too, I guess. Just based on the results and he is still handily out hitting one Soto as a padre. So that's pretty great. I did not think that would actually last throughout the season. I was like, the fact that this is lasted even since the trade for the first month after the trade is amazing and miraculous. It can't continue, but it actually has to the point where they might actually finish the season with that continuing to be true. So love it. It's a really, it's just a very fun and silly remarkable thing, and it lets me tweet exclamation points at you. So I'm all for it. I think I hope he continues forever. I guess I hope it continues forever, but only if. I hope that the NASA of it continues forever to be clear. Yeah, no, I want one soda to be like, you know, Juan Soto, as we know him, and as we have come to expect him to be, and also it would be so cool if we look back and we're like, you know, wald Soto as advertised in the long term, but get a load of this Joey meniscus all he needed was an opportunity and he is want Soto two. That would be delightful. Yeah. Luke Voight has also handily out hit Josh bell, which is also sort of funny. Poor Padres. Poor Padres. They're in better shape than the nationals overall. This is what the nationals have for you. Just gotta let them have this for now because there's not a whole lot else to be happy about on that team right now. Just because we've had a couple change of regimes. So the tigers have a new head of baseball operations, Scott Harris. Who was poached from the Giants and also formerly of the cubs. And then the royals also have a new leader, although it was someone who was already there because what happened is state and more is out the door. So this is on the one hand not surprising on the other hand it's very surprising because it seems like that might very well be a lifetime appointment. So this is notable news we lost John Daniels last his job this year, one of the longest tenured readers of a baseball operations group and then you had Dayton Moore in that group as well and he's gone now. So it turns out that just being bad at baseball for quite a while can actually get date more fired. Yeah, it's an odd, it's an odd thing because on the one hand you feel like I kind of thought he'd outlast us all, right? Yeah. We have talked a lot about how it hasn't felt like they have a great sense of where they really are in their competitive window, but we have appreciated their can do attitude and you know there have been some weird aspects of date.

"Still right now. It just feels like the issues they're fighting over are pretty basic, right? It's like, how much do rookies get paid? How many years of team control did the clubs have? It's not like arcane stuff. It's the same stuff they always fight over. And the idea that they didn't just get together and say, hey, we got to resolve this real fast. You want this, we want this, let's meet exactly in the middle and move on. And try to present peace. I mean, the one thing you can say about budget is he presided over peace, labor peace for a long time. And now you have this, you have for the first time in a while, this the workforce being like, hey, you guys have been manipulating Chris Bryant got held back in kindergarten, you know? And everyone knew what was happening and Theo up so you had to come out and say, no, you know, it's just about the right roster for the right. And everyone knows what you're doing. You're keeping him in the minors for a month to get another year of control. They've now done that every guy on the Yankees. This is what drives me crazy. Every one of those guys is arbor. Every one of them. And even like Luke voigt, like all those guys, they manipulated the service time to get an extra year of control, which makes them more valuable in trades and it makes them able to Aaron judge isn't going to hit free agency until he's 31 or something. So it's like the players have a point here. It's like everyone has always looking how are these greedy players trying to be even greedier? No, the players are right. Like the players, the management has been screwing them over and manipulating them in every way they could. And so whatever, just get over it. Like, concede on that stuff that you know you've been doing and players don't demand 800 grand for a rookie year salary takes 6 50 and let's play the game because otherwise you're just gonna disappear. That's my fear. Yeah, how about just when you're a rookie or a rookie and that's your first season? Like we're watching, I don't know, any of the rookies in the NBA right now. Nobody's like, ah, I have the mobile service time. The calves wouldn't play him for the first month because they want to move his contract a year back. Imagine if the grizzlies had been able to put John morant into the G league for a month. And then they got extra year of control. Like, imagine how crazy that would be. They would go crazy at that, yeah. It's nuts. And it's, as usual, it's just, I feel like baseball's role in my life. Really since 1994 was to just tell me fuck you. It is many places of possibly could, just to make me feel bad, they made the games longer. They've screwed up the southern stuff. They've gone on strike. They cancel the World Series. They just have complete inequity between the big markets and the smaller markets, then they fix that. But then the big markets were like, we're making so much money. We'll just we'll just trade Mookie betts. Yeah. And our fans will accept it because we've done right by them in the past. It's just over. I know where we see this stuff pretty similarly. Yeah. I mean, there's also the, let's take the braves out of Atlanta, move them to the suburbs, even if no one wants us to, just because we think there are too many black people in the stands. And the answer is always like, they'll get over it. Baseball's attitude is like they'll get over it. I mean, to be fair, that's every leagues. That's the NFL's attitude too about most of the stuff is like, yeah, they'll come back. The problem is that in baseball, people are coming back. The dwindling numbers of people, the increasing median age of the baseball viewer. I mean, I'm 46 years old. I'm the youngest person I know who regularly watches baseball except for maybe my kid. So I feel like their attitude of like it'll be fine, they'll come back isn't true anymore and they don't realize it. And that's a problem. Wait, is your kid actually watching baseball like they're in the weekend stuff? He's sitting in front of a television watching like the 6th inning of a game? You know, a couple of years ago, yes, you know, he's a middle school now, as a year, son. And so now it's like they're texting with their friends and FaceTiming in their on TikTok. And then he goes outside and shoots baskets in the backyard. He's not doing the thing that I did when I was his age. If there was a game on, when we were kids, you sat and you watched the whole thing. You sat dutifully through the commercial. You're going to do that. You have to do, yeah. But that's the problem, right? Is that that's not the case for our kids. They have 8 million things that they want to do that are fun and interesting and create dopamine in their brains. So they're not going to sit there and watch a brewers cuds game in April. It's just not going to happen. And then there's the Hall of Fame, which we should also talk about, which is a mess. Yeah, let's go. I had one last point. Yeah. I felt like last year and you know this because we were on a.

"It's not exactly ridiculous to say that, you know, the 92 win Yankees this year could have made a World Series run. Might have made a run past the log chart game if they had played that game at home and Giancarlo Stanton's two doubles and a home run had in fact been three home runs. All of these things aren't that ridiculous to track. The bothersome thing is that when you leave it up to chance like that, you end up with extremely talented teams exiting the postseason too early, which begins to feel like a pattern, which is why Yankee fans say, you know, of course, a hot team could get hot and win the World Series, but why hasn't it been us since 2009 when we were, say it with me now? Clearly, the best team. That wasn't a hot team that got lucky. That was the best roster in baseball running over its opponent. So the Yankees haven't had a run like that as an accidental hot team since 2001, but this year of all years, the Atlanta Braves are no matter what you think about their position up three two going back to Houston. They do have max free. They do have vien Anderson. They're two actual starting pitchers. They are a hot team that retooled at mid season to take a bad looking season. They were 50 to one World Series odds on August 8th. Their trade deadline acquisitions changed the roster entirely, so they went for it when they maybe shouldn't have. Yankee fans would have told the braves to sell at the deadline. And in fact, many did, but this is a hot team that has managed to parlay having a non rotation into being one game away from a World Series win. Yankee fans don't want to act like Brian cashman's vision of building a consistent play of contender is valid, but this World Series is very much proving that it is a successful way to build a team. Yeah, but I kind of you're right, but I do disagree to an extent because the braves are a team of destiny this year. I don't think there's any denying that. They had a bullpen game against the Dodgers and somehow managed to absolutely dominate it. This braves bullpen is historically over the last couple of years has been laughable. It's been one of the biggest weaknesses that's cost them so many wins. And then you look at the Astros and the Astros are just, they're just well built. And they have the personalities, and that's kind of the other aspect of it. That I like to talk about a lot with the Yankees because we have the Joey kallo report about how we put his pants on funny and everyone's like, do they vet these guys before they're coming into The Bronx? And while that does sound insane, take the Gallo situation here about how he puts on his Jersey out of the equation, do the Yankees really take any personalities into account because you look at this team and a lot of the people are of similar ilk, very reserved, buttoned up answers. The celebrations, they don't get you entirely pumped up. Luke voigt was probably the main guy who got everyone jacked up, but this Stone Cold Steve Austin celebrations really wasn't until the end of the year that you saw emotion ripping through this Clubhouse when.

So go read that from the athletic, you're gonna there's possibility of DJ layer becoming full-time first baseman. It's supposed to be possibility of DJ Lemay who becoming a full-time third baseman. There's a possibility of, you know, maybe Voight coming back. Like it's crazy, but her one quote was, quote, Voight was marginalized after returning from the injured list after the trade deadline and would seem to be a non non tender candidate as he's projected to make more than $5 million in his second year of arbitration. So and guess what? She did not preface this with Anthony Rizzo coming back. She did not preface this with another first baseman coming on board. She prefaced this just by Luke voigt existing. So that's why now I kind of have a concern about this because look, you're the Yankees. Perfect word there, marginalized. Voight was marginalized. He was healthy. They could have fit him in the lineup. They opted not to. He got playing time returned to him and Rizzo went on the COVID list. Proved himself that he could still perform then the Yankees still told him to kick rocks. And we're good, thanks. Yeah, they tried to trade him at the deadline. They didn't do it. Like, at that point, if there was even a consider, if you're looking ahead to the off season like at this point, you probably know your non tendering him or not at the end of July, right? Or like this thought process doesn't change in August and September because if the thought process were to change, boy would have changed your mind with not ten non tendering him because he performed well, aside from the times that you gave him four days off number like, hey, Luke, do you mind pinch hitting in the 8th inning? Us down by two with the bases loaded. That would be great. Thanks. We'll see what you could do. You haven't had enough bat in a week. Or even worse, we're down four nothing. And there's nobody on base. You want to go up and rip a Homer? Oh, you struck out trying to rip a Homer? You look like a big old loser. Yeah, thanks. Cool. So it would be a bad luck if he's not tendered because you can't tell me the guy doesn't have any sort of trade value. I'm not saying he's gonna fetch you a top ten prospect. I'm not saying he could get your reliever. This guy's a starting baseball player if he's healthy. I understand that the health is a big question, but health is a big question for a lot of key players, especially ones coming into this free agent class. So if you're talking about a cost effective first baseman who hits well above the league average when he's on the field, non tendering him would look so bad. He's not gonna be here next year. I think we can all agree on that. Whether Rizzo's here or not, the Yankees are gonna figure something else out. I think they go for a lefty here..

"I am not saying he's going to be the centerpiece of a deal right now, but why instead of Anthony volpe or Oswald peraza, why wouldn't you glom pitching prospects onto Luke Voight and tried to turn that into a trade? And again, this could be Clark Schmidt and peraza, I would keep one of Opie or peraza. That's sort of where I fall right now. I would do I would do peraza Voight and Luis heel for mattson. Yeah, I would do a number of things. I would go as far to say that you don't even need to include prospects if you didn't want to. Look, what if you, what if you packaged Luke voigt and glaber Torres? What if you packaged Luke voigt Joey Gallo in like a top ten maybe one top ten prospect? What if you did Luke Roy Aaron hicks in 8 half Aaron hicks his contract and gave them a center Fielder and then, you know, popped in popped in somebody else. It doesn't have to be a prospect heavy deal. I also don't think that's cheaping out on I don't think that's trying to screw the a's over at all. I think Aaron hicks may have some good years left. It's just not working out here and it's a liability for the Yankees at this point. I think they sour the relationship with Luke Voight. He can't be here anymore. They disrespected him. They traded for somebody else. They didn't get and then that other person went on the COVID IL, Luke .1 AL player of the week and then they benched him for essentially the rest of the season. Gallo Gallo seems like a guy that age would love to have versatile defensively, lefty power bat, played in the AL west. I'm can't believe we're drinking Joey Gallo. I laugh every time we talk about it. I mean, yeah, I mean, I laugh in a sad manner because this was a great, this on paper was a great move to help us in 2022 and how I just don't understand where he fits on this team. "He tried to back in and said a run up. I mean, it wasn't good, folks. And if you're going to use Luke voigt, he should not be playing first base that much is obvious, especially not in a pivotal series like this. Have to tighten up that defense. That's why the laboratory is saying, it's over and over again. It goes to my mind both ways. It's like, I know he's hitting 300 with almost no power over the last month or so. He's been serviceable by the defense at shortstop he's unplayable. I know, but it's like a base. He's okay. Yeah, but what about that double play ball when he threw the first? This is what this double. That's why you don't give up on labor. What about the non competitive at bat the inning before? I don't want anybody to give up on glaber, but I do just want to don't be a prisoner of the moment. It's been a roller coaster ride for a reason. And he still doesn't look like the 5th overall prospect in baseball. All you all you're hoping for at this point is service ability, which is not laboratories the ceiling. I don't want to give up on them either, but one double does not a season make. So let's keep our eyes on that moving forward. Every inning he doesn't play shortstop is a positive. But let's pivot to Boston. I hate that this is on the schedule. I hate that it matters, but then again, you know, I mean, if I've considered the Yankees out of it for several days now, every win feels better that way. Every loss feels more tolerable. "Davey Garcia though to me is still the most egregious example of this, just because people are being like, mom's the word around Davy, but people are pretty confident that the team made a tweak to him this off season to increase velocity that has thrown off everything about what he does. I agree with much of what Matt Blake is accomplished. You look at the guys, even the reclamation projects midseason that he's been able to turn around like clay Holmes and like all the starters who he taught to change up to. And like what he did with James and tayo. Clearly, there's something there, but whatever they did, whether it came from blaker with a came from somebody else, did Davey Garcia has missed entirely with what he is as a pitcher, not everybody needs high vlo to work. It's not like he showed us he was infallible at the end of 2020. He was actually quite bad when the season wrapped. That started Fenway blew his ERA up to 4.98. So it's not like we're talking about somebody who was perfect and couldn't handle a little bit of tweaking. But then again, if you're trying to coax max villo at a DV Garcia, then you've lost the plot a little bit. So he is, of those players, the most lost, but you've certainly ended up with a situation where they tried to shop Luke voigt at the deadline. He started for two weeks and proved they shouldn't have done that. And then he got benched, and now he looks again like a guy who they're gonna have to convince someone to take him if they want someone to pay full price for him. The better solution is keeping it. The better solution is Davy Garcia being good, but you're certainly talking about two players who are less valuable than they were in both mid August and at the end of 2020. And that's thanks to the way that the Yankees have handled them. Yeah, and I think that I think that obviously bad decisions mostly all around here..

Something I'd love to have Adam on here because this is where the discourse just gets really good. But we got to talk about a couple of things. A couple of things that are going to affect the Yankees down the stretch, stretch that are going to affect the Yankees in October that are going to affect the Yankees in the off season probably in 2022. Let's start with Luke Voight. What is going on with the management of Luke voigt? Or let's call it mismanagement because that's what it is. I don't know if it's Aaron Boone on the surface you have to blame a boon here. Why he's the manager, he makes the lineup cards. To our knowledge, I understand that largely nowadays front offices have more influence than they ever have. They tell the manager what to do. They tell the manager the matchups to play. They tell them what personnel to sit. That's just how it goes. Is Aaron Boone, that kind of puppet. The Yankees front office claims he's not. So if that's the case, then we're gonna simply have to blame the manager for not having void in the lineup more times than he should. Luke Voight won American League player of the week. It was two weeks ago now. It was last Monday. He was announced the winner of the player of the week. Before last night, the Yankees had played 8 games since he had won American League player of the week. Luke voigt had received 17 played appearances over those 8 games. That's two plate appearances per game. He started three out of the 8 games. And then pinch hit for the other ones or came in, it was mostly pinch hitting. Either way, like it can not be like this. This is the time to start pushing your gut. I don't know what the concern is. I think I don't know if the concern is they don't want, I mean, obviously, one of the concerns is they don't want Luke Voight playing first base, because Anthony Rizzo is much better defensively out there. I understand that. But guess what? Since Anthony Rizzo's come off the COVID injured list, this defense actually looked a little rusty and he's largely been bad on offense, save for an RBI double on a solo home run. This week. So. There is no excuse for the team not to not be able to make room for Voight in this lineup, especially when he was that hot of a hitter. He was hitting almost 500, he was OPS in like 1.2 something. It was absolutely out of this world and he was among the main reasons why the Yankees were able to rip off that 13 game win streak. So I don't know how you reward him with that much. Look, we've discussed previously. We know, we know there's not enough room for Luke Voight in this lineup on an everyday basis. But four or 5 times a week if you have 6 or 7 games in a week, that's not unreasonable..

I can see where he's kind of on the border. Yeah, and he kind of depends on what else I might be able to execute next few days. Yeah. I think mine is pretty close.
