"5 15 I'm Luke Luger and thanks for being with us this Mother's Day and happy Mother's Day to all of you out there. Sound. It has been 25 years since Seinfeld signed off the air. 76 million people watched that last episode where Jerry George Elaine and Kramer were put in jail and seemingly restarted the conversation they started 9 season prior. Frederick Crowe writer of The Washington Post looks back with WTO ps and Kramer on why the show is still popular three decades and why some people hate the way it ended. It's amazing the staying power, one of the writers told me that part of it, the success was that they never used cliche as old expressions. They always came up with new expressions. And those are the expressions that stay with us, all these years later, in total, yada, yada, yada. And I know one part of your article that you've written for The Washington Post talks about that people still hated the way that Seinfeld ended. What is that all about? I actually liked it, so I didn't quite understand exactly why, but the critics said a lot of the time thought it was a little bit bloated. It was a long episode, one reviewer called it just a stupid ending where if I can do a little spoiler, the four main characters wind up going to jail, evaluating the good Samaritan act. They didn't help somebody who was in need. So they thought, I think that one of the main things was at kind of got away from what made it so successful. All those years, it was a sort of tight 22, 22 minute episode. And it was really kind of about little tiny things that they would blow up at the big things. And this is a very much of a diversion where these four characters have this major trial. It's like a national news and as I mentioned, they go to jail at the end of it. So it wasn't departure, but a lot of people did like it. It really was mixed overall. And as I mentioned, I really thought it was a great episode. I'm not sure anybody's ever happy Fred when such a popular show ends, right? Any of the top fans, they always have something to say about it. We have to talk about all the favorite lines that have kept us entertained for so long, like spare square, soup Nazi, puffy shirt, the different themes. Just wondering from your perspective and what you found out, can writers actually recreate using that same kind of formula, and they make something that good again. I don't think so. I mean, I think the closest you'll see on TV now is Caribbean enthusiasm. You know, which is Larry David's vehicle and of course Larry David was the co creator we saw involved and he wrote the Seinfeld finale. So you see a lot of those same kind of themes, but it was kind of a timepiece as well. It was 1990s America. I'm not sure you can recreate exactly how it was. So it was one of a kind. I don't think we'll ever see anything quite like it again. What do you think the formula was in the 30 seconds we have left here? I think from us using real life stories, one of the writers told me that Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld told writers don't make up things, don't come up with stories come up with tell stories that are from your life. And so for example, with the soup Nazi, one of the writers actually had gone to a place that they jokingly referred to as the soup Nazi because the owner was so strict in how people could order. And they made an actual 22 minute episode out of that. So that was the key thing. And the other thing was, who can't relate to the message that George Costanza dealt with? He decided to do the opposite of every instinct because he thinks we're going so downhill for them for him at that point. And we all have days like that a week like that. And so we can all relate. And I think that was a key thing as well. Again, that was Frederick frommer with The Washington Post

"I'm Luke Luger and thanks for being with us this morning. Some are travelers can't wait for their vacation and who can blame them, but they soon may have second thoughts about their plane getaways. The transportation security administration is expecting a potential record number of travels at airports this summer, all at the same time, major airlines say they will be cutting service amid concerns about air traffic control staffing levels, CBS travel, editor Peter Greenberg joins WTO's Mark Lewis with what this ultimately means for you when you leave home. It starts to become a perfect storm, airlines are flying full already. Cutting back 10% of their flights, most of them have done that now as a request from the FAA because of their staffing issues that you mentioned. And then of course, you have the numbers that the airports that are going to be coming at different times. What the airlines are doing is they're not just cutting back on flights, but they're flying fewer flights at more concentrated times with larger planes. So that's why the airports seem more crowded than ever because they're more crowded than ever. Only at peak times. And the TSA can't handle that load. And as a result, they're appealing for people, at least the airlines to cut back on their service. This is going to be a messy time this year, and it's all happening at the same time. And that's your problem. Yikes. Last summer's travel season was certainly frustrating long lines crowded planes, a lot of flight delays and cancellations have the airlines addressed the operational challenges that they face what everybody came back to travel last year. Not really. They say they're trying, in some cases they're trying to come up with two systems so you don't have a meltdown like Southwest Airlines had or even the FAA with their ground stop last year. The real problem also is scheduling. There is an argument right now. And one that may be tested in court that the airlines are operating schedules and they're publishing schedules that they physically can not support. For example, many of your listeners might remember when they go online to make a reservation, they'll see what they're making a connecting flight only a 33 minute connection on some flights. Well, that's just ludicrous. You can't even get off the plane at 33 minutes, and that's assuming it's on time. So with planes being full, that just compounds the problem because if your first flight is late or it's delayed or you miss it, you can't get on the second flight because you've missed that and you can't get on the third flight because it's already full. And that's why so many people are spending time in those little rocking chairs in places like Charlotte. My goodness. And it certainly won't take much to throw a monkey wrench into the works whether it's scheduling or a summer storm or a computer system glitch. What steps should travelers take to try to minimize their risk of lengthy delays and other issues? Well, you know, one of the old pieces of advice which predated the pandemic and all these problems, of course, is try to get the first slide out, but I'm going to add to that. It's not just the first slide out. Find out which plane came in the night before, and is overnighting there, so it became the first flight out. The reason for that is the flight crew will most likely stay with the plane and you'll be the first ones out. It's not just the first flight anymore. Find out is the flight that's leaving at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning. Did it come in last night if I'm not in an airline hub, then there's a 90% chance the crew stayed with the plane and will have a reasonably chance of getting out.
