"Movie had its virtual premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and is now in theaters, our film critic Justin Chang has this review. For a while now, it seemed as if there's no role to absurd or outrageous for Aubrey Plaza to play. In Instagram stalker and Ingrid goes west, a naughty nun in the little hours, a flesh eating zombie in life after Beth. The character she plays in Emily the criminal. An art school dropout who masters the art of credit card fraud. Sounds almost low key by comparison. But if this is one of Plaza's more straightforward, dramatic performances. Absent her usual deadpan comic touches. It's also one of her strongest. She holds a set nearly every moment of this engrossing Los Angeles noir. About a woman whose luck ran out long ago and who decides to seize control of her life and livelihood. Emily is technically already a criminal when we meet her. She has an aggravated assault conviction on her record. That's made it hard for her to find steady work. Let alone pay off her $70,000 in student loans. She barely gets by, making food deliveries, and sharing a crowded LA apartment with two roommates. Plaza plays the character with an outsider's toughness. Emily grew up in New Jersey, and we can hear it in her accent. But also the shrewdness of someone who knows when to fight back and when to go with the flow. That talent suits her well, when a lucrative but illegal opportunity comes her way. Her task is to buy some pricey electronic equipment using a phony credit card. Then slip out before the theft is detected. The merchandise gets picked up and resold, and Emily gets paid $200. Not bad for an hour's work. It's supposed to be just a one time thing. But Emily is soon hooked and coming back for more. The man who oversees this operation and takes her under his wing is Yusuf. A Lebanese immigrant, played by the charismatic Theo Rossi. From shows like Sons of Anarchy and Luke cage. Yusuf realizes that Emily makes a pretty good crook. Partly because few people suspect her of being one. The movie tacitly acknowledges the racist and sexist assumptions that would give a white woman an advantage. In this line of work. But it also keeps us into Emily's feelings of fear, anxiety, and exhilaration. As she starts taking on bigger, higher stakes jobs. Soon she's got her own little racket, printing the credit cards and arranging the sales herself. In this scene, she meets with a customer in a parking lot who tries to rip her off. He's played by the late Richard Carlo flanagan, who died last October after shooting this role. So it's 600. 6. No, it's three, three hundred. No, 600. I said, three online.

The first iron fist series are the first Luke cage series was so good. The first daredevil daredevil season was so good. And by the time they got to defenders, I think that they kind of knew that they had sort of played it out and it was, it was not their best writing. It was not their best filmmaking. It felt it felt like they knew that they were not in it for the long haul. Okay. Yeah, because that first, I saw the first season of daredevil. I don't believe I saw the second season. No, I think it was, I think the first season creeped you out too much. Right. It was like the Watchmen. It was their doomed. Did Rio is terrifying. And when he shows up and in Hawkeye, I am just like scared out of her gourd. Oh, not this guy. And Hawkeye doesn't want to confront him. No. And Kate bishop doesn't know what she's confronting. Right. And he's just so big. Yeah. He seems like he feels like the rhino, right? Yeah. He feels like he's in defeatable. Right. And untouchable. And untouchable, and just too much. The way they write him the way that they write Hawkeye's reaction to the fact that he's going to be involved in this thing is because they figure out like, oh, this is the big guy that he's trying to avoid, right?.

And I'm sure we'll talk about it eventually, but hawkeye is like, daredevil, to me, and I saw the Netflix ones, just like that would be a perfect one to do these like 8 episode spin off of, you know? And a movie. Honestly, that's 13 episodes for all those Netflix series way too fucking way too many. They were like, if they'd split them up if they had two kind of separate storylines and treated them as too feature length films that they were doing that would wrap the fuck up. Great. But you get to a point in those Netflix films where you're like, all right, sweet, we've beaten the main villain. Oh wait, just kidding, they somehow came back old fuck or something. I think in some way back a couple is not done. We podcasted about how Luke cage defenders, Jessica Jones, all of them had the same kind of flowers like good, good, and then it just droops for like four episodes. And finds a way to wrap up. It's like 13 episodes way too many. I think Netflix, I think marvel kind of had an idea of what they were going to go with with Disney+, and they kind of torpedoed the Netflix stuff. And I think they left bad fruit on the vine for them. So I think there's certain characters where it makes sense for daredevil to come back in. She hulk is obviously the main one. Yeah. "Same in a rally, it's almost like a kind of chalky limestone kind of flavor to it. So that's kind of a trademark of Malcolm white. So there's some kind of borrows out a little bit. A little more floral a little more fruity, but still has that kind of refreshing mineral taste to it. And food for thought. So Shang-Chi is a marvel film. Well, Shaun Chi and the legend of the ten rings. The legend of the ten rings. Is a marvel film. And based on the character. And I didn't know a whole lot about this character going in other than it existed. That's pretty much all I can tell you. Yeah. I hadn't read a whole lot about it didn't know much. I only knew about the ten rings via Iron Man and his story. So, you know, and the Mandarin villain. Iron Man three, and then the one little one off they did, what was it called? Hail to the king. Nailed to the king. Kind of closing out that chapter. Yeah. So this movie was interesting for me because it was kind of a nice breaking new ground for the MCU. So travie, you want to give them a little background about Zhang Ji. So Shang-Chi is basically in the 70s marvel was doing looking into a lot of Kung fu and black exploitation. That's where you get Luke cage. And then iron fist and obviously Shang-Chi. And Shang-Chi was basically had no superpowers and was kind of their version of Bruce Lee. And I think he crossed paths with Luke cage and iron fist and daredevil. And I think he was later actually been an avenger in last ten years, I think or so. But I really don't know much about the character either. And I've read marvel for years. So it's only when he's guest starred in another book. I know of him, and I've read comics with him in it, but I've never actually read a Shang-Chi. Well, solo series. If I'm not mistaken that he kind of went away for a long time, because the 70s origins were a little problematic. Yes. And so it was kind of a trick for any writer to read that character without also bringing up a lot of the problematic origins. So I think when it ultimate came around, they were able to reintroduce a character redo some of the origins. In the comics, his father's blue Manchu, right? I believe so, yeah. Which, just on its name alone, you can see where this is going. And so I think that's why it was really dormant for a long time through that golden age of comics that 70s through 90s range where things got really big and a lot of the bigger names stood out. So I think xiang Chi was quieter, brought back up with the ultimate in the 2000 ish and now is obviously in the cinema. So we would say this is a minor character in the comic book history. Yeah, I mean, but marvel has done really great things about taking the C and D list characters and bringing them to the forefront in a new and interesting way..

He's a little higher than that, though, just because he's got he's all the vampire powers and weaknesses. Now he doesn't have he can't like, as far as I know, unless they've changed it. He can't shape change. You can't turn it into mist or a bat or a wolf, and I don't think he can hypnotize people, but he has all the main physical powers. As Netflix Kills Its Marvel Shows, 'Daredevil' Season 3 Is A Must-Watch
"Or those characters going in. I just don't. So these shows to really good job of, you know, introduced these characters showing them. Many of these characters were flawed, which I think was good thing to see. Imperfect heroes, you know, which we hadn't seen a whole lot of it. We kind of had the MC you had shown us some of that, but these were characters that you know just weren't perfect. They had their flies. They had their issues. They had their problems. They had checkered difficult pass sometimes. But through that all they tried to find a way to, you know, to be a hero for their city and the people around them, and I really enjoyed that. So you know, like daredevil did an amazing job and they also took their time to just, you know, build the origins or the starting points of these characters. Right? They didn't rush it. Didn't rush. You know, it's just like, you know, just Jones now right to the action. No, they didn't do that. Daredevil definitely didn't do that. We didn't even see his conic suit until the very end of season one just the way it was, you know, and Luke cage. Same thing, you know, like we, we didn't get to see. Like, you know, we saw him show up a little bit and Jessica Jones, I think, came out before Luke cage season one, but you know, we got to see that there so we already got to see. And that's another thing the shows have done. They've kind of like, you know, start to ties in these characters together. They've shown up on some of each other shows, which I think has been a great idea. It's worked out really well. And like I said, I've gotten to watch some of daredevil season three so far. I haven't watched all of it, but I like what I saw so far and Jessica Jones. Even though season two had a few flies, it was still a good show. It was an enjoyable show. It was a show I enjoyed watching. So, yeah. And like I said, even an even punisher, which punisher originally came in for the. Those that don't know on daredevil season to, you know, John Byrne all came in. And again, we had gotten not one, but two punisher movies, and I had a chance to watch both of them recently. And I have to say, I, I forgot how bad the first one was, and it's sad because the first one is star studded in this big film and had a lot of potential. But it was really, really bad. And then I gotta see punisher war zone, which I thought was this video.

"Out the little TV Netflix to be exact daredevil season three's already come out. I'm sure a lot of you have binge watched it. And if you did you probably heard a little x. men reference and it didn't register with you because there's a little obscure. So let me tell you there may be some spoilers for season three here if you haven't watched it yet. So if you don't want spoilers zipped past this part toward the end of season three FBI agent, Benjamin Poindexter who has bullseye is undergoing redistricted surgery for his spine. You might notice the doctor's name in there that their consulting with Dr Yama who is Lord dark wind, who is one of the doctors who was the pioneer for fusing adamantine him to bones. They couldn't mention adamant him yet because the FOX Disney merger isn't quite done yet. So they didn't actually say. Demand him. This may be a lead in from the bringing more x. men related characters. We don't know. But the doctor or Yama reference was a nice, subtle little nod. A lot of people probably didn't catch another little nugget of knowledge for you. Doctor or Yama is also the father of lady death strike, let's move onto some other Netflix marvel series, NAS, oh, great news. You've probably heard by now. Iron fist is done after season two. There will not be a season three as of now for iron. Fist. That's really a shame. The first season was a little slow. The second really picked up in added a lot of depth to the character was looking forward to third season, but net Netflix has not picked up the option. A lot of fans were happy that got cancelled and I say, shame on you guys just because you don't like it. Why do you wanna take away from someone else? I actually enjoyed iron-fist both seasons and I know a lot of other people did also. So if you don't like it, hey. Don't watch it. It's really simple. Another marvel Netflix shows cancelled was Luke cage. The cancellation of Luke cage was a little disappointing. First season was really good. Second season picked up a lot introduction. Bushmaster great villain much better than the villains from season. One. Netflix says, decided that Luke cage will not get third season. That's not to say that Luke cage and iron fist won't be teamed up together for a defense heroes for hire or another. Defenders. Both of those I think would be a great idea if we don't get single seasons from those guys, this Nick shows some you may not have seen because it is exclusive DC universe, streaming service, titans. Watching the previous retains. I was a little skeptical, but after the first couple episodes, I'm a believer. Titans is a good show. In fact, rotten tomatoes gave an eighty four percent on its tomato meter with a twenty six positive reviews and only five negative ones as of time of. This filming. So if you have a subscriber DC universe streaming tines might be the show that gives you to find a crack, open that wallet and give DC some more of your money. Let's talk about his show that got canceled, but picked back up by Netflix. That's right. Lucifer. FOX originally candidate. It wasn't due to ratings spots is starting to cut ties with all the stuff that they don't really own a big percentage in. So they let Lucifer go, Netflix swooped in picked up Lucifer. They have leaked that they are going to have reveal in this season re meal is one of the brother. I believe in this when they're gonna make an assistant angel. "Netflix will not be picking up the option for season three of iron fist, but you will still see Danny rand crossover in some of the others and actually a defenders to is not off the table. They work so well together, and maybe we'll get a heroes for hire spin off, but there will be no more immortal iron fist solo series. I'm the. Protect your line. Yes. Danny, we know who you are. The aero verse has huge crossovers every fall. This fall, no, no different. We are going to be introduced to the city of Gotham and a new character to the aero verse bat woman, they cast ruby rose to be bat woman, and they've shown some costume pictures of her and looks like they took them straight out of the comic book. This is right off the pages of DC. Ruby rose has the look. She has the acting chops the arrow verse. All those shows are crazy popular. I'm loving that they're expanding, especially with Gotham going away. CW is expanding their CW superhero universe, so might not be long before we start seeing some more of these guys in their own series. DND players. If you remember a while back, they added a new class. Old spice came up with the gentlem-. In class based off of their commercial character? Well, not to be outdone. They've made another new class. Not old spice is just made up by the fans called the murder Hobo class. If you've ever played DND, you know, the murder hobos are the players who just want to maim kill rape, torture for no reason whatsoever. Just do it in cause chaos. They have made their own class with class defining rules. Now you can actually download this from DM guild, which is it's probably not going to be considered canon for DND, but being on DM guild is probably the next best thing. If you're DM is allowing it, you might try this murder Hobo class. If that's not for you, get the old spice gentlemen class there I've played the gentlemen class. It's pretty cool. You should try it out, murder Hobo class, not into that type of character. A lot of people are, but, hey. Now you've got rules for it by now. You've heard that Disney has fired James Gunn the guy who wrote and directed the guardians of the galaxy hugely popular movies. He was fired over some tweets. He made ten years ago or so. They were made in jest, but they were taken, I guess, by Disney's seriously. They didn't like the content a lot of dark humor that they didn't think was funny. So they've, they fired him well, as soon as they did that, all the other companies were lined up at his door knocking and the one he answered for was DC. The DC universe is going to have James Gunn attached to the new suicide squad to movie. He's already proven. He can write group movies with guardians of the galaxy in just do a killer job. It hasn't been decided if he's going to direct suicide squad to yet. But just the fact that he's writing it is it's mind blowing. We're going to see probably the best suicide squad incarnation. You could think of Batiste day Batista's already said that he wants to come over. If James Gunn is directing it and play a character. I just I can't wait for this to see a movie be as popular or some of the marvel movies would be great. I would love to see James Gunn grab this and run with it and just do a whole series of DC movies. So congratulations, James Gunn. Congratulations. DC marvel. I hope the guy you've replacing with does just as well. Let's finish this up with some Star Wars. Let's start with the mandatory and show by John Fabbro. If he don't know already, the Disney play channel is picked up a big budget, Star Wars series that they're letting Jon Favreau writing direct. Jon Favreau has done an excellent job with all the other stuff. He's worked on from iron man, two zero through gemology all the way up to jungle book the live action one. Handing him the reins of this in him picking a character or a classic character. I mean you've got just the way that they I I like I like the choreograph. I thought it was really cool. They modify teams were kinda quick, but I mean, that's how it usually fights go on and you ever been to fight streetfight down. Just a jump is usually the winter and then half the time you have when you break it up, the guy it's getting their butt kicked the friends holdings. Like let me go. Let me add my God. But anyway. Just like, I think with like a lot of the series, I still have to say, daredevil is my favorite. And lost it all it did like iron ended for the cinema? Yeah, I think so too. I think with Luke cage was was pretty good and just good Jones. I, I'll be honest, I hope I don't get any backlash, but Luke cage. She's in two. I did not like it. I like I like the slow character development stuff instead of just Michael bay action for the sake of action. But season two, I did not like as much as season one Luke cage this. I didn't hate it.
