Desmond baines scored 23 points as the Memphis Grizzlies completed a two game sweep of the Dallas Mavericks, one O four 88. The bears are set to give linebacker tremaine Edmonds a four year $72 million contract and the Steelers are bringing on three time all pro corner Patrick Peterson for a two year deal. McCollum scores 32, Pelicans hold off Mavericks 113-106

Stop talking to the refs. But it doesn't like it doesn't tell me a quick time I was talking about. I disagree with you on a beat. And we both, I mean, I'm catching up on my basketball watch. Yeah. And you've watched more than me, so I guess I'll trust your judgment right now. But what I remember from and be last season and a couple of big games I watched this season is he's getting fouled. Oh, yeah. And he's incredible. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, so you said looking for the whistle is different. I think what happens with embiid is it's not James Harden or you've got a little coaching. From time to time. All right, that's fair, but I don't know. I guess I'm biased towards the big guys because the big guys, you can't call them many times that they're being failed and it's just like they deserve the same protection as everyone else, but they don't get it. And when he gets to the line, 90% of the time he deserves it. But it's also like he gets right. He gets the big man bump where when he's being guarded by someone who's 6 three and he tries to reach through and he draws the foul on a switch, you're like, come on, bro come on. Just dunk that. I guess the question is for me on the Luca stuff is, do you see a path forward for this team around Luca to maximize his ability? If not, is that more on Luca or more? It seems like you are more upset with the organization than you are with Luca 'cause I'm surprised I was expecting you to come at Luca about being out of shape or yeah, well, not developing his game. And I would love that. I took for granted that every single year LeBron showed up in pristine shape. Kevin Durant showed up with another tool every single year. And I expected and want Luka not just to do that. Because he objectively he has improved, but he just hasn't approved that thing that's there. And he can physically dominate. You can score from every single level. The problem with just talking about his development compared to the team is I do actually think with how good he is right now, they could just, if he had a more complete roster, they could win the title.

I watched it after I knew the results. So I knew I wasn't nervous with the Twitter crowds. But all right, I feel like I'm spreading out a whole bunch, but what I wanted to focus first, we can get back to all these other points later in the show. But first, I want to focus on Luca. And his development because this is a weird thing that hit me this morning is the CBA expires at the end of next season. And all we've been hearing is how they're going to address this player movement stuff. They're going to address the fact that the players can force their way out. They're going to address this in some way, make it more difficult for players to have control and power. Luke has three years left on his deal, but he's got one year left to exhibit this power that all other players have used to move themselves from place to place. So I guess that is the backdrop that I'm using for this Luca conversation that I want to have with you. And one of the things I want to talk about is what you think about his development and improvement with more can we expect from it at what's holding back. In the next step is, is Kyrie enough to keep him there. And his Kyrie even going to stay there because he's not under contract long term. So let's start with the Luca development. What do you think? So the Luca development is tough because he came into the league as one of the best teenagers ever. Say what you want, but Kareem LeBron Luca. We're talking about just 19 year old basketball players. He's in a really elite tier. He is probably the air to LeBron and this guy can run every decision, make every decision that makes an offense or run as a big guard. He can make every pass. He's ridiculous. And he gets a lot of James Harden comparisons, rightfully so. Big difference, he's incredible in the playoffs. And the 30% gain in stats and Hardin gets from flailing around and reaching into people's arms and stuff. Luca just can play through that and it's awesome, even though he winds at the refs. So to me, his development, he might be slightly doughy and out of shape and he's still the third best player in the NBA. He's absurd. To me, the biggest thing with his development is the Mavericks and competence in building a team around him. say, can I read you their draft pick since they've since they won the title in 2011? Jordan Hamilton can gay and gobo and gumbo. Tyler zeller, Darius Johnson Odom, Kelly Olynyk, Mike muscala, Justin Anderson, sat in them Singh bamara, AJ Hammond's Dennis Smith junior, Luca, which is a lock. See show notes for details. So when it comes to how basketball in Europe is trained and coached and developed, I'm just curious, Kirk, like, what do they do over there that is different? You talked about the globalization and exchange of ideas. Obviously going in every direction. But what do they bring in terms of just their approach as you can understand it? Well, there's two things. One, they don't have AAU, which is probably the smartest thing they do. A better way to develop young players that's less about promoting individual skill and more about team concepts and stuff like that. But when I talk to durk about it, he was very quick to say the coaching itself has improved here as well. Maybe the coaches have gotten better along the way. I think, of course, that's a huge that mentor and obviously teach these kids how to play the game the right way. If you went back to European basketball in the 80s and the 90s, there weren't a lot of 30 or 40 or 50 year old coaches capable of training, rising stars, phenoms like Luka Dončić, but fast forward 20 or 30 years. Again, because of Michael George generation, people Michael's age or a little bit younger are now able to coach and elevate the abilities of young people in these countries to get better. But yeah, more than one person I've talked to Pablo points to America not having a great development program for young basketball players right now. That might be just as much of the story as you're having a competent one. Yeah, and so is there an obvious solution there, Kirk for America to take to import from Europe, something that they have just been missing the boat on? Well, there's a couple things that I think come up when you have this conversation. Everything from the 24 second clock, which they institute in Europe at a very young age that players are taught that you need to get a shot quickly in an American basketball either there is no shot clock in some high schools or is it different length, the longer length, that's been brought up multiple times, and then if you look at just the orcs of our best American players, they are sort of shepherded through multiple development ecosystems between the times they're like 15 and 21. They go through high school AAU college for a semester or two, and at that exact key window of time that they need the most critical developmental attention, they're being sort of hustled from one ecosystem to another. And that's not great for growth. And in any domain, particularly pro basketball. But I am curious, when you walk up to one of these arenas Kirk at the Euro basket tournament, the style of play from Luka Dončić specifically. What's even like to watch as he's in this specific tournament, how different is he playing here versus how he's played in the NBA, as we've seen him on TV. Yeah, it's pretty similar. I mean, he's the best probably orchestrator in the tournament in terms of getting an offense going. Gets the bob and he is going to the line and one. And now the chance once again of MVP and I say that with great due respect for Nikola Jokić and the ensemble, but you know, to draw a soccer comparison I've always compared Luca to Zinedine Zidane in part because he's very deliberate. He's not the fastest guy out there. He's not going to jump the highest, but he sees the game in a way that nobody else does. He makes the right play. And one of the things that I've seen with him this summer Paolo is just the breadth of his scoring package is getting wider and wider as he approaches his prime. This is a guy you can now score at the rim, the mid range element is a big new piece of his game he has a step back three and he can get fouled as well as anybody outside of James Harden. And he has such a diverse way to score that almost any opponent he's going to find a good look and he's a heck of a pass or two. So as a result, the Slovenian team is getting the best looks in this tournament and that has a lot to do with Luka Dončić. Yeah, no, I mean, that is Zidane in terms of his conducting of the offense. Also in the sense that he might headbutt a referee at any given moment in the chest. That's all right. That's another thing I wrote about the worst thing about watching Luka Dončić is that he is haranguing the officials the entire time. How many times does he ask for a foul in his made layup? So many times in the pool play in cologne, I watch the Slovenian defense play four against 5 as their leader was on the other side of the basketball court, arguing a call with a FIBA ref. And that's not a good look, and that's something that other people include exact low of really pointed out about Dončić's game is that this is an unusual all superstars lobby for calls. But it just does take it to another level. He keeps on saying he told JJ Redick, our friend that he's done. He's done lobbying refs. But I had talked with myself and I just say this can't keep going, you know? It's a really bad look. It's over. It's over now. No more. Then here he is, yeah, like doing it apparently per your reporting in Europe. As egregiously as ever. Don't call it a comeback. He is back to a haranguing the officials as much as he ever has. And in fact, all jokes aside, it's a distraction. It's beneath him as a player. Yes, he's too good. Almost every court he walks on. He's the best player in the gym. He doesn't need to be doing this. If he could tone it down by 50 or 60%, he'd still be arguing ten times a game. It's gotten out of control in my opinion. But speaking of these players being their most extreme selves at times at this tournament, what are you seeing from the other MVP candidates that may suggest something about how they could be playing when the NBA season starts? Well, both jokic and Giannis have looked fantastic throughout this tournament. However, even though they went undefeated in the group stages, both lost pretty early in the knockout phase, yogic lost in the round of 16 to Giannis lost to the host team Germany in the quarter files, and that's kind of surprising that I think that says more about the quality of this field than it does about either yogic or Ian. It's one of the most interesting things I saw from Yana specifically was in Milan in that group stage. This guy was making over 80% of his free throws. Wow, it's by far the biggest sort of shortcoming in his game. Wait, that's huge. 80%? Yeah, it's a small sample size. But Kirk, it fair, ferret always keeping the analytics abide. But the point is, this was a guy who had opposing crowds in Brooklyn, counting down the seconds on the free throw clock. Played 33 minutes. Because he was terrified, it seems at times. Yeah, and you know what? Speaking of globalization, the Italian crowd in Milan adopted that counting, counting in English, maybe for my sake, again, I'm not promising this is going to extend into the MBA season, but if I was a bucks fan and I had saw those free throws at Euro basket, I'd be very excited about janus opted to combo this upcoming season. Yeah, that is absolutely terrifying. But okay, we've talked about the president. We've talked about the past. I do want to talk about the future because the one guy I was dying to watch in this tournament is the guy that everybody is dying to draft. I mean, introduce us to Victor wembanyama. Otherwise known as the French kid the giant has been done. And when I made my arrangements to go to your old basket, part of the pitch to ESPN was we're going to get to see Victor play against elite competition people like Giannis. Unfortunately, he was a late scratch, but he's still the guy everybody wants and arguably he's the most coveted number one prospect in recent NBA history. He is 7 three. That's his most noteworthy sort of trait. He's 230 pounds and he's skilled. He might be the most skilled person of that height ever to play the sport. He still a little bit raw, but he's the number one prospect for a very simple reason, basketball isn't rocket science. He's very tall and he's very skilled and he's pretty athletic. So he's an exceptional defender at very least. He's got size, he's got reach, he can cover ground like Giannis in a heartbeat, and at very least he's going to be a great defender because he has a 7 foot 9 wingspan. Jesus. But his offensive ceiling is also through the roof. It's a little more raw, but this guy has a chance to be an all time great pro basketball. Yeah, this is the guy, your former team, the spurs, seem to be tanking for alongside the jazz alongside. Who else is in that in that Derby? Oh, the thunder and the kings. The kings won't say they're in there. The thunder always in there. There's gonna be quite a bit of people posturing to get one of those top four slots in the draft lottery this year because Victor is that unusual. I'm not saying it was related. I saw Greg Popovich at the Euro basket tournament in Milan, but he did not get his first chance to see Victor play. There because again, he was a late scratch, but yeah, the spurs in any other team near the top of the draft is going to be praying for that number one pick a little bit more than usual. If Victor remains on this trajectory to be the best prospect we've seen in a long time. Greg Popovich has not gotten his glimpse yet. You have not gotten your glimpse yet, all of which seems to me like there is yet another expense report, Kirk. Overseas. Isn't your future? That's definitely right. "You think it's open, it's not. So he's struggling in that department as well. And those run outs, you know, when the suns get going and transition, not a ton of times when they were scoring out of it, but like it's devastating when they get into transition. Yeah, Chris Paul seems to be at his best in the fourth quarter and Luka Dončić seems to be getting a little bit tired in that fourth quarter too. Oh, that's interesting too. Now again, you know, CP three can buy this time and not have to work so hard for the first time. It's a real nice luxury. And then, so and here's what's interesting about that, the whole storyline is that Luca was getting into it with the fans, right? And that's always an interesting dynamic we've seen that with LeBron and whatnot. But it seemed to me that they said, okay, you're going to get into a personal fight with fans and he stepped up to one of the guys, I think. In a tunnel. And she goes, fine, we're going to embarrass you. And did you get that notion that they were trying to embarrass him on purpose? I guess there were targeting him with Chris Paul. I mean, they were going at him every single time and Chris Paul was putting on a clinic. So yeah, yeah. I mean, almost to the point where like, yeah, I mean, is he the weakest link on defense? Like probably in a Lowe's lineups then, you know, that's the guy you would probably want to, whatever, but it definitely felt like something like the team collectively, maybe the arena collectively said, we got to put this guy in his place and we're going to let the master do that. And I got to tell you, if you're talking about decision making in the crunch time of a playoff game, except for a few times where CP three has melted down in the past when the game is seen to have gotten away from them these teams. The gold standard. Every decision he makes is the right one every shot he takes is the right shot. It was a masterclass, really. Yeah, I mean, he gets this done all the time. I've seen him do this before to players not named Luka Dončić. I think Luka Dončić just happened to be guarding him. And Chris Paul gets that mid range off whenever he wants and then he could pick defenses apart..

"Exclusively on the Apple TV plus. While Tim, now that we're getting close to the end of the regular season and things seem to be going pretty well for the Mavs overall, how do you think fans are feeling about having Jason Kidd at the helm? You know, when we talk about the twofold reasons that fans were hesitant about his hiring. Obviously, his background no on court results will change how fans feel about the hiring in that sense. But I think in terms of encore results, Jason Kidd has been exactly what the team is needed. I do think the way that he was not Rick Carlisle, and he was not as hard nosed. He was not as forceful in the way that he coached and aggressive in the way that he communicated with players. I think that was needed. And I think that has been probably the most important factor this season just to change in coaching dynamics. And I also think that the defensive improvements were not expected. This really was a very similar group to the teams and the roster they had the past two seasons. So I think that has been a clear positive in something he's brought to the team. And then on offense, you know, there's not too much he really needed to do. Luka Dončić plays Luka Dončić offense. And the key is just setting up the team around him so that Luka Dončić can succeed. He's always going to kind of play one way. And we'll see in the postseason how Jason Kidd does. The NBA is a process for versus results industry and the results are always going to win out. And I think the results have more than justified the Jason kid hiring, even if the process was at the time and still legitimately can be questioned for the way the Mavericks handled it. After that slow start, Luka Dončić has been playing like one of the top 5 players in the league for months. But as we all know, the real test for superstars comes in the playoffs. Now, Dončić has already proven himself to be an incredible postseason performer, but he's still yet to get out of the first round as you had mentioned earlier. So how important is it for him individually to lead this team on a bit of a playoff run? I try to remind myself that Twitter is not representational of society as a whole and in sports as a whole. Something that needs to be put in your brain every day. Yeah, I need it like written on my mirror. And maybe I'm just on there too much. But I do think it would be very unfair to Dončić, who has been brilliant in two first round series. If the Mavericks, for whatever reason, do not get out of the first round, that that would hang over him. And it shouldn't. It absolutely should not. He played as well as any player can play in the two series that he played against the clippers, the past two seasons. But something about not getting out of the first round, it would just provide that extra bit of fodder of, oh, well, he hasn't done it yet. You know, he hasn't had a deep posters in running. He hasn't made it out of the first round. And so I do think it's really important that the Mavericks win their first round series. I do think it's important that they make a convincing run, whether it ends in the second round or whether it ends in the Conference Finals or rather somehow they get to the finals themselves. But just having that convincing body of work in the postseason and having it not hang over Luka Dončić anymore, that he hasn't made it out of the first round, even though he's done everything he can to get the team out of the first round, the past two times has been there. I think that's important for this team. And quite frankly, at this point, I'm expecting it to happen. Finally, Tim, a lot of people are pointing to Dallas as one potential dark horse to come out of the Western Conference and make it to the NBA Finals. And the field does look pretty open right now in the west. You watch the Mavs play day in and day out. What do you think are realistic expectations for this team can play off time? I don't know how much they're contenders. I still think that they're certainly a step behind Phoenix in the Western Conference and that I don't even think it's guaranteed that they're massive for strong favorites. But at this point, I'm betting that they win their first round series. And I think of the Mavericks secure the number three seed, which is looking more and more likely. That it sets them up with a fascinating second round series against Memphis. But just broadly, an is sort of where Dallas was, a season ago. And Memphis might be the team that just hasn't quite learned how to win yet. Dallas might just be far enough ahead in terms of just having the veteran presence and know how of having these two series that they've played against the clippers in the past few years, that they'll end up with just a little bit of an edge. And I think that we have to get there before I make any predictions. But I think it's a series that can win. And then all of a sudden, like I said, they're in the Conference Finals. So I think getting the number three seat, like it looks like they should be able to. That's going to set them up for a really interesting series of opponents. And if they get all the way to the Conference Finals, again, that's one series away from playing for a championship. And so it's really hard to discount them when I do see a path that could work and could play out in their favor. Well, thank you so much Tim for breaking this down. "It was really impressive to watch. The MVP and Dallas had swarmed around him. They steal it. I think what was so startling about it is, even though the Mavericks made a couple moves, they had a couple players who were more defensive minded in the rotation. It was largely the same group that we had seen last season, and really even the season before. And these same players with a different coaching staff and a different principles were all of a sudden looking completely different and playing with so much more effectiveness on the difference of N and that's what really bullied the team as they built into this winning stretch of basketball. While that synergy kind of got shaken up because at the end of that run, they decided to ship former all star Chris eps persing us to Washington for Spencer Dinwiddie and javis berton's. Why did the Mavs decided it was the right time to move on from him? I think the Mavericks had come to the conclusion that Christopher was not the future of this team that he was not the future costar for Luka Dončić. And kind of like a breakup and in a relationship you're in. Once you know that it's ending, there's really no point in keeping it going. And I certainly did not expect just because of pursing this contract and his perceived trade value around the league, that they would be able to trade him at this deadline. But the Mavericks once they decided this started actively looking. And they were talking to Toronto about a deal, and that fell through Toronto in a different direction. And then the Washington, they started talking there in something came together. And once they decided, yeah, this is something that will set us up with more flexibility. And it will end in era that we know is not the era of the future for the team. They decided to pull the trigger. And really, in some ways, the players they got back have been even more effective than maybe they anticipated. But the genesis of the train and the main reason for the trade was really a decision that Christopher talented as he is and really he had had a good season when he was on the court. But he wasn't the future. And they knew that and since they knew that it was time to move on. Well, let's look at who the Mavs got in return. How have Dinwiddie and Breton's looked since joining the team? Are they bringing anything to the team that you think they've really lacked in recent seasons? Didn't what he especially has? I've talked about and in many people around the Mavericks have talked about the team needing another shot creator that Luka Dončić does everything, everything revolves around him and orbits around him. And look, that's pretty effective. He's that good. But when he's the only one who can have the ball in his hands and be trusted to create a shot for himself or create one for another teammate. That just bogs down the offense. And so for Spencer Dinwiddie to come in and for Spencer Dinwiddie also to have his own specific way of creating shots, he's a more decisive player, whereas Luca will take time and he'll break someone down or cross them over back and forth. And eventually he'll get into the lane and you can't stop him. But it might take some setting up. Spencer is much more dynamic in instant in the way that he attacks. Made with two 36 left. Absolutely love. And his confidence as a player. You know, he will either shoot without hesitation or the balls on the floor. And he decided to the rim. In the Mavericks really needed a player like that. It's then when he going downhill all the way to the back end of the Mavericks have climbed the mountain. Brilliant about that particular drive. He knew supporters wouldn't be able to do anything with those four fouls. And he went right at it in the habits has been more of a bench player. I think that was always expected to be the case. But I do think that he has value in that he may play a very important role in the postseason because we know that shooting is just about the most important quality in the MBA at this point. And being able to play as a small ball center, someone who you can't leave. I think there's real value in that and it's probably not going to be more than 15 or 20 minutes. But it's a useful player to have off the bench and he's fit that role effectively. So overall, Tim, how has the team fared since that trade? Are they looking like a group that's peaking at the right time as we head into the postseason? It's interesting because the Mavericks have won a lot of games. And the beat good teams, but they've mostly won games by small margins, and when they lose, and sometimes when they lose two teams, they're very clearly better than they're losing by big margins. So you can look at the whole and say, well, their numbers aren't that effective. And they're not as impressive as they were beforehand. The defense has taken a couple of steps back. But you can also look at the team's highs and the way the team has played the best opponents that they faced. Milwaukee is a good example. And the way that they're able to write so that challenge and the way that they're able to really neutralize things that the best teams are trying to do and on the flip side, not being neutralized by what the best teams are trying to do to them. I think that's really effective. And I think it does speak well to the fact that this team is dangerous in the postseason. And I think that will speak well of their future and set them up because Lucca, he's still 23. He's still getting better. There's still ways to improve this team. The Mavericks are going to be one of the best teams in the coming seasons. And there's no question about that. Dallas Mavericks commit to Milwaukee jam brilliant game from Luka Dončić 32 points and 15 assists. The Mavericks are 33 and 12 in their last 45 games. Today, the athletics Tim kato explains why the Mavs started the season so slowly, but finished so hot. The impact of dealing superstar Christoph's, and just how dangerous they've become. I still think that they're certainly a step behind Phoenix in the Western Conference. But at this point, I'm betting that they win their first run series. And I'm thinking that, you know, a Conference Finals run isn't out of the question. From wondering in the athletic, I'm Tiffany of Shinsuke, it's Wednesday, April 6th, and this is the lead. Tim kato welcome back to the lead. Hey, how are you? I'm doing lovely. How are you? I am doing lovely as well. I was just recounting some travel difficulties to you guys, but the flip side is I got to see the Mavericks play this weekend specifically against the box. And that was sensational. It was a sensational game of basketball. From front to end. Well, yeah, let's jump right into that game because it really did feel like a statement win. So what stood out to you about the Mavs performance in that game? Luka Dončić stood out to me. There's just no question that he was playing like an MVP at an MVP level. Again, using that strength, nice soft touch. She's got 13.7 assists. He was just brilliant. Just absolutely brilliant. And if there's a single moment of Luca that stands out from that game, he calls for a switch. And he gets a switch and it's Yanis. He goes and gets a former defensive player of the year. Switched on to him, then steps back and hits a three pointer over him. Gotcha. Puts it in. Look at Dončić. I love after that shot to look he gave like admiring his work. And did it over the fingertips of Giannis. What Yanis does so well is play help defense. And when he's near the rim, he can affect so much of what the Mavericks are trying to do. And so Luca came to a conclusion that it was better for the team if Giannis was guarding him. But really, he wasn't trying to get Giannis starting him to consistently score over him. Nobody's going to do that against Yanis. But by taking him away from the rim, all of a sudden, the Mavericks going to lay up, they get a couple corner threes because all of a sudden they don't have this defensive player in the same position that he usually does. Corner three. It's coming. Dorian Finney Smith from downtown. It's a 7 point lead. He creates a good shot on each possession. And I just thought that was a brilliant tactical game management and in game adjustments from Luca to recognize that the smartest thing for the Mavericks to do in that opportunity is was to do something that normally wouldn't make sense. And it speaks to his brilliance. It speaks to why he is so difficult to guard, and it speaks to me why he will soon be an MVP, even though it won't be the season. All right, both statement already at the top. Here we go. We're going to talk about Luca and his season in a little bit, but as we know, it hasn't all been rosy for this team over the past year. So I want to look back on the journey Dallas had to take to get to this point. And I want to start in the off season and the hiring of head coach Jason Kidd. Can you remind us of how people reacted to the Mavs bringing kid into the fold? It was a largely negative reaction that fans and even analysts, media members, people just observing the higher. It was largely negative. And I think it was negative twofold. Jason Kidd is someone who has been convicted of domestic violence and the Mavericks are just coming out of a sexual assault scandal. Just a few years ago. The Mavericks do not have the right to hire a person like this that has a history of domestic violence. No matter if Jason gets gotten over it, he's gotten better gone through anger management. It seems paid is $200 fine. He had to pay at the time. All that kind of stuff. They do not have to be the team that does this. And now they're deciding to do this into the argument wasn't that Jason Kidd couldn't be a changed man, but the argument was, are the Mavericks, the franchise that are in the right position to judge whether he has changed or not to judge whether he has earned his second opportunity. More broadly than that, there was Jason Kidd's coaching history that had largely been unsuccessful. If his head coaching record, lifetime is below 500, that doesn't mean he can never be a good or successful NBA head coach, but if you want to compare him to a good coach with a winning record and then say, is this a step forward or backward? I have to say it's backward. And it depends on your perspective on which one weighs more heavily or whether both do. But it was clear that there was a couple legitimate reasons that people could be hesitant about Jason Kidd leading the Mavericks. What about his relationship with Luka Dončić? Were they worried about that at all? I think that was one of the positive reasons to hire him. If there was a perfect person for Luca to elevate his game with, that would be a Hall of Fame point guard that the best players in the game have lobbied to have coached them and respect them. So I love it. And Nico Harris, and there was an understanding right away that Jason had had conversations with Luca that Luca was supportive of the higher that he respected Jason Kidd both for his playing career in the way he thought about the game. And so I think that was always expected to be a positive and throughout the course of the season. I think it's fair to say that has absolutely been a clear positive. All right, well going back, there were a lot of doubts surrounding kids fit with this team headed into the air. And the Mavs didn't do much to really quiet those critics with the way they played early on. So looking big picture, what was going wrong for this team as a whole during the first quarter of the season. You could probably point to three or four different big picture things that were going wrong for the team just to rattle off a couple. The team was trying to implement a new defensive structure and it just took time for the players to just adapt to that. And as a result, was giving up open threes and just looking bad defensively overall. After Rick Carlisle coached the team for more than a decade, Carlyle was more rigid with his approach, he would look at a player and have very specific ideas of what that player should do on the court. When Jason Kidd came in in a lot of ways, he was the opposite of Ricardo. It's what the players needed in terms of culture and in terms of atmosphere around the team. But that extra freedom that Jason was allowing them led to some players doing things that they just weren't great at. And even though that extra freedom did add to the locker room environment and was a nice reprieve for the first quarter of the season, it was a struggle in some ways. And the team just wasn't as efficient as they had been in previous seasons. And that led to a lot of their early losses in struggles overall. Well, despite a lot of pre season MVP hype maverick superstar Luca Dončić didn't exactly fly out of the gates this year either. Can you walk us through some of the issues he was dealing with at the beginning of the season? Luca came into the season just looking labored and sometimes fatigued. He was still putting up ridiculous deadlines and hitting ridiculous shots. A lot of the times. But he clearly just wasn't as effective or able to do the.

"Around as much because courage is covering tons of territory. But the mental focus that's required to have the ball of the entire game on offense. And then to get hunted on the I mean, people don't realize the way the number of ways teams hunt him. It's not just one on one matchups attacking him as the defender, but it's also whoever he's guarding is crashing the glass because they want him to have the box out. There is just so many things that kind of factor into it. And yeah, he's not, I mean, he's not in shape. That's just like that he's now he might not be an awful shape, but he's definitely not in top physical shape. But he'll get there. I mean, he's young. He's well, here's the thing. It's about maximizing whatever your potential is as a player. I think the athlete moving outside of basketball, Brady is the guy out of anyone who's maximized his potential the most. Like he's done, he's actually made himself more agile. He's learned how to be faster, quicker. He's changed his throwing mechanics. Tiger Woods did the same thing. I think LeBron and the NBA is somebody that has maximized whatever his career potential was by being not only a physical freak, but somebody who really put in the time year after year. And I would love to see Luka do that at some point. LeBron's spending like I've read the articles listen to the podcast at this trainer. He's got like the machines in his house. He spent a $1 million on his body a year. Yes. It is, yeah, it is. The thing that I think that's interesting and this is one of the last little bit I'll say about this stuff is. Part of it is to be that young and to be the face of the franchise and have the franchise basically given to you. I mean, trading away four fifths of starting lineup, building around this guy. Billboards everywhere, you know, the ringer guys are playing kahle Luka. As always, like this kid who's descended from above to save the franchise. There is a little bit of that and there's a lot of people being I don't want to use the word terrified, but just like walking around, worried a who is holding him accountable for that. Right. It's not the teammates because it's the team is basically built around him. And it's just kind of like, I don't know. Very early on the first year I was there, I remember we were the catering that would come after practice and after games. They would have like this giant canister of sweet tea. And lemon and sweet lemonade. And I remember just looking and seeing like, okay, this dude's filling up like his water bottle with like sweet he's making like Arnold Palmer's. Right. And I was like, I didn't say anything to anyone, but I was just like, that doesn't seem like a good idea. I mean, liquid, I don't know a lot about experts. Good idea if you want that. Yeah, but it's just like it doesn't seem like, I mean, if it doesn't seem, but yeah, they eventually got it spurred away on and I'm sure he's got people looking after his diet, et cetera, but every year, it seems like he comes in. He tries to play himself into shape. Yeah, I'm gonna play myself in the shape is never a great idea. But when you're putting up 30 ten and ten in your second year, it's hard to say, hey, here's some ways you can improve. Yeah, here's other thing. What exactly what issue do you have with them? That's not.

The big question is whether that was the right swing to make and when you look at the value they got back. It's still kind of to argue. Yeah of course you should take that level of value back but it was also gamble in. We've seen it you. We've seen a team like atlanta that had also drafted a star player their franchise player in the same draft as luca. And whatever we think of that. We all the podcasts. And then they built methodically around trae they did have more picks and they have more ability to but they also didn't make their their game changing move and they had another lottery selection a couple more lottery selections they were able to make to build up the roster before really joining playoff contention and making that conference finals. Run that they did. And i think that's. That's the debate. And i think the look it's tough. I think luka was ready. Luca was ready to win. It was very clear that when they made the kristaps trade luka was already becoming too good that it would have been very hard to stay out of the playoffs. Even if they didn't make a trade like that and that is that is like he owns got too good too fast. Like a weird. It's a weird thing to complain about but it but it's true and so yeah in some ways they were put in tight situation where you know. They didn't have the three or four year building process of compiling acids compelling draft picks compiling compiling young players and again even if those young players don't pan out in terms of they're gonna fit right into your rotation or you're starting lineup. That also gives you an ammunition to go trade for someone else you know if that situation arises. And they didn't really have that and so they immediately for us. And i think the question is not whether they got more value back but whether that was the move they should have made. That was the wind matt. Now move they were. It was the right time to make that one in for that player for that hall coming back to them..

"I was fantastic. Thank you so much. I'm gonna tell all now to run out and listen to the album version because it's got a very full almost sounds like the band. Dan lights base. And it feels like rick danko singing it and that's just such a different wonderful version. Thank you thank you. Could you tell me about writing that one. Yeah that was one of the ones that i wrote a while ago and i just i can't help but just feel like it was sort of written like a band song. It's very like you know. I wanted to write a song. It was it was groovy but mellow and it is sort of. I think it's one of the more fun lyrical songs i've written. I sat and fun playing with words on that song. You know it just felt like. I was tangled up in in my emotions. You know sort of like trying to ride about leaving this girl behind. And maybe i was watching some law and order show or something. I felt like you know is using a bunch of legal terms. This album is more for people who have followed you. It's a more country album you and your band or you're kind of very heavy guitar. Driven california style band. But this one feels a little more austin to me. Yeah i don't know where that california style got thrown into all of those articles. I mean you know we. We did the first record. Was in austin that actually only recorded one record in california or two records in california but most of the time i grew up listening to austin texas musicians and seattle musicians. There's no. There's no bands that i was influenced really from california unless you include like buckling or or you know. The sort of the bakersfield sound merle haggard that kind of thing or a. Neil neil young. I guess supposedly you made his his real sound down there in california but we called ourselves cowboy hippie surf rock when we started out. So maybe california was just sort of grandfathered. In at that point. I mentioned you're from this storied. Musical family not only do grow up and musical family. You joined the family band. Pretty early didn't you. Yeah i started flying when i was thirteen. Fourteen in the band. How long have you been playing by that point of two years. I've really got proficient at least good enough to hand. Hang by the third year. I was playing because i spent hours and hours and hours and hours and hours playing. I didn't i didn't stop. I wanted to be an olympic athlete. When i was a young kid. I wanted to be swimmer. And i knew what it took and i wanted to give that same amount of focus and attention in practice to music to stand out as someone who definitely made their life about music to stand out as someone who loves music and embodies music and isn't just riding on coattails or something you know I feel like i had a little something extra approve in to myself as well as others but most of myself that i was okay on my own and that if my father hadn't been famous i would still be capable of putting in the efforts required working hard enough to stand and be heard no matter what what happened to swimming. Well i got distracted by music. And a certain point i'd started. I'm putting more into music than i did to swimming. Music has taken me all over the world. Music is taken me to to to to love in my life is. It's given me confidence. It's given me strength. If there is a god. I think god is music you know. So when did the songwriting start for you When i was eleven years old. I wrote a song called you were it and my dad liked it so much. She put it on his record. It always will be at the time. I was probably about eleven years old when that happened. So second your eleven you start to get royalty checks from one of your dad's album funny story too. Because when i was older i was living in california i went to i went to loyal marymount university briefly dropped out but as i after i dropped out. I was paying rent at this place in venice california and month to month. It was kind of difficult. I was going on the road and making money but there were there. Were times where. I was not gonna make rent. And i remember one day the dave the rent came due and i didn't have the money i didn't have hardly any money. That point. not sure if anybody realizes. But i never take money from my parents. I just i just kind of. I don't know. I forced myself to separate from that because i again i. It was my own thing. So i couldn't pay the rent and i was driving down the pch. Some something just came over me like okay. I'm going to be okay. No matter what. I'm just going to trust that. Life is life is going to be okay and i got a call as soon as i had. That thought. I got a call. And it was that i had a package fedex so i drove to fedex and i opened up the package and it was a check from writing that song for exactly what was due for my rent. The exact to the dollar amount. And i said wow in on that point at that point on i just started. I just sort of said to what. I'm just going to keep trusting. That is fantastic story. I'll play that saw has if i remember it You're.

Yeah, like just more fluid and can handle the ball and off like has real dexterity and like hand-eye coordination and like Vision with the way that he passes and it's it's just a totally different skill-set, but I think he's also just a better athlete with Luka Garza is especially this year. Like if you've seen much of the Nuggets this year, I haven't watched on NBA now, so he actually looks athletic and that's not to say that like, I don't want to say like he looks at home by NBA standards, but like Luka garage Nikola jokic his clearly added some quickness this year and it's part of why he's like making an empty people's right. Now. I think like he's gone from home super Elite player to like potential MVP candidate and I think it's in part because he's quicker. He's just like a better athlete than Luka Garza like that even even the comparison falls apart in terms of athleticism, I think. Which is a concern..
