"You're listening to Asian American history one O one. A podcast about Asian American history from generally known historical happenings to the deeper cuts that we don't hear about in school, where your hosts, Jen and Ted, the daughter and father team. Welcome to episode 43. Whoo. It's been a while since we started an episode like this. So how are you? I'm pretty good. I'm pretty good. How are you? I'm doing well. Yeah, busy. Yeah. But I guess that doesn't tell you about how I am physically or mentally. Right, right. Yeah. I am still excited about the Olympics. So that's a good thing. Yeah. Excited about the different wins. I'm actually really looking forward to the Winter Olympics. Me too. Oh man, I just really want to see some skeleton and luge sled. I wonder if there are any Asian Americans and skeleton lose your bobsled. Yeah, we'll have to check. We'll have to see. Gonna have to do some research. Yeah. I don't even think that there are any Asian Americans on the hockey team. Yeah. Unless, unless Jason Robertson happens to make it, which, you know, being a rookie last year, I don't think he'd be selected, but he's a worthy candidate. Someone to look out for probably in the next four years. Yeah. Well, hopefully, one day, at the Olympics, ice hockey. Yeah, we definitely know there are plenty of Asian Americans and figure skating though. Yeah. Which is super exciting. Yeah. I'm excited to see I think Nathan Chen will probably make it onto the Olympic team. I'm excited to maybe see him at the Olympics, which would be really cool. Yeah, and hopefully getting a gold medal this time. Yep. Yep. I mean, he's had a world championship win, I think. I'm pretty sure he has, but you know, use your hand you, the Japanese male figure skater, is really good. And so a lot of the time he'll end up he wins gold. And then I've seen a couple times Nathan Chen will get silver, which is amazing. Yeah. But yeah. Yeah, silver's good. Silver's great. Yeah.

"Quote. Decisions made this year have the potential to impact our climate and landscape for decades to come. Well, after months upon months of fan speculation, Netflix has finally announced that Stranger Things season four will be dropping on May 27th. And July 1st. Season four is being split into two volumes, the kind of thing Netflix has been playing with recently, like they released a three volume movie series fear street last fall. Many of the episodes will be longer than individual episodes in previous seasons, overall making the total runtime of season four twice the length of any previous season. In a letter to fans, show creators, the duffer brothers say that the two volume plan is mostly to try to get the humongous show out as soon as possible. They also confirmed that the next season season 5 will be the show's last as they had always plotted it. So get ready for a lot of penultimate, setting the stage for the finale vibes in this season four double feature. In other news, record store day is once again returning to being on just one single day, April 23rd, it was spread out due to COVID the last two years, and the full lineup of releases we can expect to see on the day is now live. This year's global ambassador for record store day is Taylor Swift, which I personally think recognizes a cool pivot in the vinyl listening audience. The stereotype of vinyl listeners might not be Taylor Swift fans, but she sold more than double the amount of vinyl records compared to any other artist in 2021. And according to consequence of sound, she even paid the salaries and healthcare of all of the employees at a local Nashville record store at the start of the pandemic. So I'd say this honor is well earned. For record store day, swift will be releasing a 7 inch of her song the lakes from her album folklore, and also joining on a charity compilation album called portraits of her, featuring 16 artists, including swift, Julian baker, Laura Jane grace, princess Nokia, girl ultra, and more. Some other releases that I am particularly stoked about or at least intrigued by, include two EPs from the late David Bowie with some sort of previously officially unreleased tracks, also patty smith's double LP with tracks hand picked by record store staff across the country, a double LP compilation from the cranberries called remembering Dolores, making its physical printing debut, a collection of B sides and unreleased tracks from superchunk, Nicki Minaj's first vinyl printing of her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty. Teigen and Sarah's chaotic cover of their own 2004 album, but this time with each of them singing the other twins songs, it's called still jealous, it actually came out digitally last Friday if you want to listen. Also, vitamin string quartets cover of Coldplay's viva la Vida, like the entire album. And a remaster of Rick astley's whenever you need somebody LP, which yes, kicks off with never gonna give you up. So a lot of interesting stuff coming our way April 23rd if you're into that sort of thing. But that is it for me for today as always this show was produced by ride home media and kaki dot org. I am Jackson bird and I will talk to you again tomorrow..

So a new study published Monday in the proceedings of the national Academy of Sciences says that corn based ethanol is actually far worse for the climate than straight up gasoline. This contradicts previous research commissioned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that indicated ethanol and other biofuels are more climate friendly. But this new study, which was funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as the national wildlife federation, found that ethanol is actually at least 24% more carbon intensive compared to gasoline. And this is largely due to emissions from land conversion to grow the corn, though things like processing combustion increased fertilizer and water pollutants don't help. Quoting Reuters under the U.S. renewable fuel standard or RFS a law enacted in 2005, the nation's oil refiners are required to mix some 15 billion gallons of corn based ethanol into the nation's gasoline annually. The policy was intended to reduce emissions, support farmers, and cut U.S. dependence on energy imports. As a result of the mandate, corn cultivation grew 8.7% and expanded into 6.9 million additional acres of land between 2008 and 2016, the study found. That led to widespread changes in land use, including the tilling of cropland that would otherwise have been retired or enrolled in conservation programs and the planting of the existing cropland with more corn. The study found. As clean energy expert David Roberts said on Twitter, quote, it doesn't get much attention anymore, but U.S. corn ethanol remains a scam, a giant government welfare program for agribusiness with virtually no economic or environmental benefits. And from civil eats, quote, the RFS caused corn prices to spike by 30% and soybean and other crops by 20%, as a result, farmers planted corn everywhere they could, replacing other crops and pasture land, and plowing up land that had previously been reserved for conservation purposes. They also often skipped the soybeans in their rotations despite the potential impacts on their soil. Ethanol critics say this study suggests what some have long suspected that the RFS is a tool to prop up corn prices. If this paper is discounted in RFS deliberations or we fail to acknowledge the net greenhouse gas effect of corn ethanol, will be admitting that this policy is all about income support for farmers, says Sylvia sethi, a natural resource economist at the university of Iowa. In addition to its role as a force for change for corn belt farms, ethanol has also become a cornerstone of Midwest politics, with 42 ethanol plants, Iowa is the nation's biggest producer of both corn and ethanol. Political support for biofuels inevitably cites the industry's economic importance to the region, and its role in keeping rural economies afloat. Some say the numbers behind that narrative are routinely over inflated, however. The latest renewable fuels industry estimates claim 46,000 jobs through the Iowa economy, but Iowa state university economist Dave swinson says he can only find 7200 jobs. By swenson's calculation, counties with ethanol plants actually averaged larger population declines grew merely .2% more as measured by wage and salary jobs and had a higher rate of farm proprietor decline. Ethanol has not been any sort of game changer for rural Iowa's overall economies or their demographics, says swinson. And adds Jason hill, a bio energy researcher at the university of Minnesota. We currently use over one third of the corn we produce for biofuel, and it offsets 6% of gas use. We could get the same benefit by increasing the fuel economy of colors from 22 to 24 miles per gallon. A Reuters does point out that a 2019 study by the USDA found ethanol's carbon intensity was 39% lower than gasoline. But that study vastly underestimated the impact of land conversion, the key takeaway of this new study. And the new study is one of the most comprehensive to date and uses the survey based USDA national resources inventory, which civil eats points out was previously endorsed by the renewable fuels association, the ethanol trade lobby. Jeff Cooper, the president and CEO of the association, however, said this latest study was quote completely fictional and erroneous with worst case assumptions and cherry picked data. Folks on both sides of the camp are on edge at the moment as the RFS ethanol requirements will expire this year, meaning the U.S. EPA will soon be announcing whether they are renewing or changing any of the requirements as study authored Tyler lark put it.

"On the same page here. A brief differentiation of the three. Bobsled is the one from cool runnings, where athletes are in an almost car looking vehicle that they have to push before they all jump in it and ride down the course. In luge, the individual athlete starts the race already on the sled, which is flat and not at all car like in bobsled. It just looks like a more professional version of the sled you may have grown up riding down hills on on snow days. They lie on the sled on their back feet first down the course. And while bobsled comes in two and four person events in the Olympics luge is usually solo, although there is a two person version called double luge in which the second person literally just lays on top of the first, and it is the absolute best thing to watch. Now, skeleton, meanwhile, looks a lot like luge in that it is one person on a similarly shaped sled, but they are on their belly and going down head first. They also have to run about 40 meters and jump into position on the sled at the start of the race. Instead of starting already on the sled, like in luge. In both luge and skeleton, athletes can reach speeds of up to 90 miles an hour. But how did we get to this point? As Atlas obscura points out, the sled as a functional item goes back centuries. In places with snow and hills, they were highly effective vehicles for transporting very large, heavy objects. It wouldn't be until later that the sled came to be used as a pastime. A lot of sports that are now included in the Winter Olympics had their start in the Scandinavian military, taking activities that were a part of military strategy like skiing and shooting and turning them into competitions with each other when they weren't fighting. Luge and the other sled sports are a bit different. It is possible that sleds were used in a military context back in a 103 BCE by a northern Germanic tribe who slid down a mountain on the backs of their shields to attack the Romans and failed at its that could just be a made up legend, but it does emphasize an important point. Up until about the late 1800s, sleds were thought of as un steerable. You could go down a hill really fast on one, but you didn't have too much control over where you would end up down that hill. That changed towards the end of the 19th century. At two resort towns in the Swiss Alps. Davos and saint Moritz started as popular summer resorts for aristocrats from around Europe and North America. But soon decided to open in the winter as well, and the rich folks spending time there needed some way to keep themselves occupied. So they started sledding, or as they called it there at the time, tobogganing, possibly due to influence from the algonquin language and visiting Canadians. Quoting Atlas obscura. This early period of winter sports creation in the Alps drew English men and Americans. In broad strokes, the Americans brought the equipment and the English men brought the ceremony. It was these tourists who, when they weren't skiing, took sleds down the picturesque mountains, often write down the main roads in town, which seems to have been very annoying for the townspeople and great fun for the tourists. Of all the varied kinds of sport which men in their incessant search after amusement have discovered, those which have taken the most lasting hold and attained the greatest perfection appeared to be the various forms of rapid motion upon earth or water in which one man's strength or skill can be tested against another's rights, Theodore Andrea cook in notes on tobogganing at saint Moritz. Saint Moritz is probably the birthplace of the lineage that gave us luge. According to some accounts, it was in Davos that toboggan races had been held to the great entertainment of tourists in the early 1880s. Hotel operators in nearby saint Moritz took notice, and according to the saint Moritz tobogganing club in the winter of 1884 through 1885, 5 guests at the kom hotel formed an outdoor amusements committee and built a sled racing course to compete with Davos. This course was known as the cresta run quote. Originally made of snow as sleds developed to have metal runners and steering mechanisms, the cresta run was noted to get run down pretty quickly from these heavier sleds. And when it got run down, it hardened, pretty much into ice. But that's when people noticed that on ice, they could go even faster. And that is when sled runs started being intentionally made from ice, increasing speeds and danger exponentially. I would say this is probably when sled runs went from a fun afternoon activity where you chuckle at your friend's wiping out while you day drink on the sidelines to a much more serious competition. The cresta run at saint Moritz and nearby resort towns across the Swiss Alps. These sled activities steadily evolved into luge skeleton and bobsled, leading to the first federation of sled sports in 1913. And when the first Winter Olympics was held in 1924, four man bobsled was on the roster. Skeleton debuted at the next games, but luge wouldn't be added until 1964 in part due to a sort of back and forth in popularity between skeleton and luge. But especially as the sports have developed from their humble wooden sled beginnings at saint Moritz to the 90 mile an hour aerodynamic battle between latex and ice tracks. How do people actually stay on course? And frankly stay alive while hurtling down the course faster than most cars drive on the freeway. John Eric Goff Professor of physics at the university of Lynchburg, who focuses on the physics of sports, answered just that recently in a piece in the conversation. Most of it is down to gravity, the mile long courses drop about 400 feet as athletes speed down the course. But to get more specific, quoting goth riders in the sledding events reach their fast speeds because of the conversion of gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy. Gravitational potential energy represents stored energy and increases as an object is raised farther from earth's surface. The potential energy is converted to another form of energy once the object starts falling, kinetic energy is the energy of motion. The reason of flying baseball will shatter the glass if it hits a window is that the ball transfers its kinetic energy to the glass. Both gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy increase as weight increases, meaning there is more energy in a four person bobsled team than there is in a one person luge or skeleton for a given speed. Racers are dealing with a lot of kinetic energy and strong forces. When athletes enter a turn at 80 miles an hour, they experience accelerations that can reach 5 times that of normal gravitational acceleration. Because they're all going down the same course, the key to winning, which is often a difference of .0 something seconds. Lies in having a fast start taking the shortest path down the course, and then as aerodynamic as possible. Goth explains, quote, while gravity pulls the athletes in their sleds downhill, they are constantly colliding with air particles that create a force called air drag, which pushes back on the athletes and sleds in a direction opposite to their velocity. The more aerodynamic and athlete or team is the greater the speed. To minimize drag from the air, luge riders, who face up, lie as flat as possible. Downward facing skeleton riders do the same. Whether in a team of two or four, bobsled riders stay tucked tightly inside the sled to reduce the area available for air to smash into. Any body positioning mistakes can make athletes less aerodynamic and lead to tiny increases in time that can cost them a medal, and these mistakes are tough to correct at the high accelerations and forces of a run. As far as hitting that shortest run down the track, that is done by keeping the sled as straight on course as possible, which also reduces drag. Athletes do this by steering. In the case of bobsled, the front rider has rings that turn the runners, the steel blades that the sled sits on. Curved bows at the front of the sled can be affected by the athlete flexing their calves. They can also steer by moving their head and shoulders. Skeleton athletes have to rely on even fewer movements to direct their sled. It is all incredibly precise with potentially dangerous consequences for getting it even slightly wrong, which is one reason why Christina karrueche over at slate recently declared luge to be the slipperiest of all winter sports. Karaoke's premise lied in the fact that winter sports can basically all be boiled down to slipping around on frozen surfaces and trying not to fall. Which is not wrong. That's basically what all those bored rich folks at the Swiss resorts and board Scandinavian military men were doing when they invented the recreational and competitive forms of all of these now Olympic sports. Just having a bit of fun on some ice.

Actually the place was called the czar before because it was the stable of Duke Giza. And Which? Actually this beam. This right above your head is where he was hung. History then. History. Exactly. That's why they the we know that they couldn't fill the building down even if they wanted to because it's point of history and all points of history in Paris or not allowed to be changed you yourself. I'm not French. No, I'm not I'm Montreal boy from. Canada. And I've been in Paris for seven years now. What led you to. Paris. Actually, my my business. I. I'M A female impersonator I worked to New York and. Walking in Finocchio in San Francisco at the time. And a manager of one of the big shows here in Paris Saami working and asked me to come to Paris. You abused me so. I. I haven't been back since. Scrapped this art or skill female impersonation remembers a small boy I saw someone named Julian Elton. Actually. Was the first. In America whoever became a big star? He did silent movies with Gloria Swanson. Does the the technique, the theme female impersonation itself. has changed a great deal especially in Europe because the female impressed is in Europe they. They are not like the female impersonators in America nor the tax of Jillian Nelson's of being. As. A boy in the daytime and a female impersonator impersonating at night. The female impersonator in Europe have gone to the extent of taking female hormone injection over them growing their own hair and living as women which I don't approve of I don't think they're neither one the other at that point. He realizes that there is this difference. Oh, they do the American theme at leaves Split Life, it's not a life. It's it's like any any entertainer actually I mean. A clown, the clown. In the circus and personality of his own. I'm the Daytona. Maria life. Now Your Tech. Now, what is your your interpretation you believe in the American tation? Do I think that's the whole lot of being female impersonator. I mean there is people who know me and have seen me as a female impersonator. Who I've passed on the street the day after not knowing me at all here then is the scale they are. Yeah. We think we'd be on personnel of many who we personate celebrated figures actresses or Social feed you. Know I do not I have my own personality which I pushed forward and jokes and I sing in my own natural voice I don't try to. Make anything artificial about the the art of my work is just. Looking something different than what I have the art of allusion as. You. Say you singing your natural voice and yet you're female. So this then. Because of illusion would come through as a contralto perhaps noah tenor, a male tenor voice mail tenor voice but the illusion of seeing me as a girls, it becomes more feminine. Is. Doing. Tricks. The matter of Luge Network. So it's a question of being an art and a skill with the rather than the way of life. Exactly. The Place of south of whichever host. The White Food, the menu looks most Tyson. Need you have a certain way? Well, we chose we we have tried to keep the food. Somewhat French home cooking because the French cuisine in Paris is very very hoti seasons and lots of wine and very fancy very heavy. Actually it's the best of cuisine in the world they say L. O. Myself, I prefer a hamburger coca-cola. that. We tried to keep it very simple and the old homemade bread and something we've tried to kept to go with. While they're more female impersonators here there would be another cities in the world no no I don't think so but I think the Art of female impersonating. Much more highly looked at. Only in America regardless freakish as we'll be. In America Tall. Set you feel more perhaps more accepted I mean you're accepted to to a point if you're an entertainer or an artist, they will look at you and respect you I have very very. High respect here in Paris because everyone knows me as being a female impersonator. Like back home of people know me of being a female impersonator. Own a Business, Not a Hobby with Jason Khalipa

"Guest is someone who knows the value and the struggle of the grind mini no Jason Khalifa. As the champion of the two thousand eight cross gains gains. But since then he's dreamed up started in scaled a thriving business. It's called NC fit which in addition to having over twenty gyms around the world old it's pioneering widespread corporate wellness programs reinventing fitness in the hospitality sector. And even changing the way people think about fitness. This but this growth journey all started in two thousand twelve when he was forced to confront the fact that he actually did not own a business at all he simply owned a hobby. I had a mentor of mine. One day we were walking down the hall of this one Jim that we owned as they. Hey Man I'm just letting you know that all this can go away tomorrow and that what you have here is a hobby not a business because if you get hit by a bus this thing's going away and he said that to me and it really resonated and after that day I started putting things in place. Get to the point where it's bigger than me. It's not just me. It's it's an organization and and you might be a figurehead of it but it's just still be able to have people in place that could lead it on the future and that was really important. Took a long time to get to that point but after a year or two weirdly developed a team that which actually worked out really well my favorite because I started developing the teen because I WANNA have business not hobby but then my daughter got sick and it ended up working out really well because I stepped away from the company for a while and it just kept running on sale and kept running so you had prepared for that moment without even realizing it worked out really well my goodness so two thousand eight you're pretty scrappy at that point was it literally soper. Noor you were starting on your own or yeah okay. Yes so from a business perspective. We opened up fifteen hundred square feet. Fifteen hundred dollars a month six month lease and we opened it with ten thousand ars in so in a way we opened the business. What did you know about starting a business at that point? Well that's really interesting so at that point I knew I love to coach. I knew I wanted to make an impact on people but I also didn't realize at the time but I had backed it up with a lot of confidence because because I've been working at the health club for so long. They Health Club was all about the business. It was all about sales. Were working at just a regular gym regular health club. Yeah and cross all about anti sale anti title business like you know. Let's go coach. Let's let's really help these people and there were just totally different ideologies. He's in in which was really good for me because I had so much exposure to the business side and then I had a lot of exposure to the coaching side. And try to marry those two with when we started the business and so you probably brought a little bit of your sales experience because I mean we believe around here that if you are truly selling your serving someone Oh yeah if you're selling to the right person I'm extremely grateful for my lessons that I learned working at a desk selling gym memberships because we had a lot of different diversity in the area I was in law. Different cultures came in. And so you learned how to adapt and grow your business based on talking to somebody and he started to learn how to listen in here. What are they looking for out of this gym membership in how ultimately going to get them to sign up was question but I learned a law about people and talking to people and so that played huge? Dividends ends early on the business. Because you get people to come in and there's nothing to sell them on except yourself in your service and that was an important thing that I learned throughout college. Was this selling my passion right. More sharing my passion say a read something not long ago that it said the millennial generation and the generation following following it more than any generation in recent history in the United States is interested in the topic of entrepreneurship and starting a business but then it also said more than any generation in the history of the United States. They're less likely to step out of actually start a business so they love the idea of it but it seems like they're terrified and I say we right. It's my generation. We are terrified. Actually step up and do something. So what are the prerequisites. What are the things people need to have from your perspective looking back back in order to start a business? I think at the time if I can go back and advise myself I probably would have advised myself not to open a business and the reason why I would've widow of is because I don't think I had the background to feel credible enough to go do it now at the time. No eight the economy's in the tank cross is not even well known at all all and I decided to go to business and looking back on it. I don't know if I would have advised myself but I also think that I had things lined up to do you. Were right meaning. I didn't have any external pressure I didn't have any children. Timing was really good. I just won the game so I had this kind of notoriety and and I had had a background in the health clubs so I don't know of back then I I had as much as I wanted to have now but I'd ask anybody who wants to start a business. Do they have that confidence. So they have that background to know when they sign at least they're going to be successful because one Sali's begins you start acting irrationally. If you're in the tank too quickly you'd have things lined up for you. You know it's one thing to say that I wanNA star Weirdest Tomo Coffee. I've talked about this before I love coffee. Yeah we we were talking about the fact. That Jay's shop is probably way better than Arkle Luge Coffee Station copying personally zone it teaches own but I don't know the first thing about sourcing it roasting in selling it. I don't know anything about the health laws in my area area. If we want to open it meaning I know a little bit about business but I will need to go learn from people glide densify mentors go work at a coffee shop. That's doing the best in the world. Go take things I like in build them into my business. Take the things I don't I can leave them behind. I shouldn't have for longer right and I think that anybody who wants to start a business go to school for as long as you can before you actually signed the lease because once you sign you gotTa know your playing in. You're playing to win. The clock started at that point. You're already in the game. I love that though. Because what you're saying is just being passionate about. Coffee is not enough. No I mean the restaurant. Business is a great example. I love food but I. I don't know the first thing about sourcing these products. How long we keep them for? I would need to learn those skills for a long time and then identify key people that have have unique sets of skills there and then bring them on board. Because you've got to understand about starting a business like what makes you different. What makes you uniquely better than your competitor? And how are you GonNa win is just what we think about. If I can't answer that we probably shouldn't be pursuing it and you said go to school earlier. I assume that's not necessarily just formal education right so it's connecting acting the right people learning from them putting yourself in positions where you anyway surprised if you connect the people in the right way in authentic way people want to help you. They do and they WANNA share their information but you need to go identify that and you need the work and you need to back that up with action. I cannot tell you how many people on a regular basis so last sure did this thing where I talked to four hundred Jim Owners in the span of six months on the phone just to check in. Hey how's the industry. What are you seeing? What are we see? The how can I help you to really want to understand. Is Our business on the right path and for all these people I talked to you and all these people I meet in person you can you can give them the world you give them anything you want you can give them. The answers are looking for. But they're gonNA fall in depth ear nine times out of ten. I'll look at these people back. Dude all you gotTa do is go do this. Is this your call them in six months and they haven't done any of it is because it doesn't mean anything unless you put action behind it You know when I talk about going to school I talked about. I would go to school in the morning morning. I work at night and I go ride the elliptical till super late at night with the owner of this gym almost every day for years picking his brain. I wouldn't just say hey. Can we meet on. I don't have time. Oh well what are you doing later on. Do you mind if I go jumping elliptical like being assertive you know what I mean. Ask Ask ask until I tell you to stop asking. We talk all the time here. One of our kind of mantras is you gotta live like no one else so later you can live like no one else and it seems so often and we see the picture of the entrepreneur that is scaled a business bigger than themselves traveling to the Bahamas and is making money while they're they're not checking their phone and that's just not an accurate picture. It sounds like no. It's not and I think it's actually a really sad thing because people want instant gratification and in entrepreneurship and business it doesn't happen and overnight you have some anomalies of course right where you'll have a startup that startup gets you know goes for an IPO twenty four months later and all of a sudden get paid out hundreds of millions leads dollars. But for the most part I didn't see what that person went through before the IPO D- and that's just the exception to the rule in general more times than not it's in the trenches working for long periods of time and then eventually start building up some momentum and then it snowballs into something

The Bizarre Case Of Cotards Syndrome

"Hill. I'm beat I didn't get a lot of sleepless nights. So today I just feel like a ambi- UCLA that dawn. But did you know that some people believe that they are, in fact, the Walking Dead, Qatar syndrome is a rare condition where patients sincerely believed that they've died. Whoa. I may say that I feel I death, but he only mean it metaphorically. I didn't know that. Anyone said it literally how do people go about their day when they think they're dead? It's rare. But it happens. Thanks to a range of possible delusions a relationship with their body completely changes. Some patients believe their corpse others think that their organs are rotting sometimes a patient might think that their body doesn't even exist at all. That's just the physical body, some individuals with Qatar syndrome believed that their soul is doomed to hell or they experienced luge of immortality. That seems dangerous. If you don't think about it really exists. It must be hard to take care of it. If I didn't think our live or thought my organs were running, or gone, I wouldn't even want to eat. And that was the fate of Mademoiselle ex a patient of French neurologist Zuhdi Kotaro in eighteen. Eighty Mademoiselle ex-police that many of her organs were missing. And as a result, she was sure she didn't need food Qatar witnessed her death by starvation and his report of the case led to widespread recognition of the syndrome. The Wagon Wheel Illusion

"Why does a fast clockwise rotating object seemed to rotate in an anti clockwise direction and vice versa? Love this question. The thing you're referring to is known as the wagon wheel illusion. You see it a lot in car commercials asleep sedan is cruising down the highway. But it's wheels. Look like they're slowly spinning in the wrong direction. There's an easy answer for why this happens on TV the fr. Name rate doesn't quite match up with a wheel spin. So like if the camera is filming at twenty four frames per second and the spoke of a wheel only completes a rotation. Twenty three times per second. Every frame is going to see that spoke a little further back in its rotation as if it slowly spinning backward. Okay. But why does this happen in real life? When you're looking in a wheel with your naked eye. I searched Google Scholar for wagon wheel illusion and it came back with more than seventeen hundred results. This is such a hot topic for research because the reason it happens says something profound about the way we perceive the world one research camp says the wagon wheel luge in shows that we process motion the same way a camera. Does by sampling it an individual frames buy that explanation. The illusion works in real life for the same reason. It does on camera, but later research found that people who watched two wheel spinning at the same rate would sometimes see one wheel switch direction, but not the other that team says the reason for the illusion is perceptual rivalry or. Basically the brain coming up with multiple competing interpretations of the same seen the same thing happens in the silhouette illusion. Where dancers spinning silhouette seems to switch directions whenever you want it to. But another study found that when they temporarily reduced activity in people's right parietal lobe, which is responsible for judging when things happen, and in what order those people experience the wagon wheel in much less often. Which those researchers say throws a wrench in the perceptual rivalry theory research into this question is only heating up. So we don't have a solid answer. But for practical purposes, the answer is that it's just an optical illusion.

His former teammate Eric Reed has also settled his case the two players sued the NFL alleging teams conspired not to hire them as retaliation for kneeling during the national anthem. They had meal as a way to protest racial injustice and police brutality with us. Now is NPR sports. Correspondent Tom Goldman. Hi, tom. Hi, mary. Louise. So what details do we know about exactly how they have settled their cases. We know nothing short interview that. Move on. We got we got three sentences in a joint statement by the NFL and the attorneys for Katherine it can read saying they have resolved the pending grievances. And that's it because of confidentiality agreement. They are not saying anything more which is a bit frustrating considering how this case this whole issue has roiled the country. I mean, let's remember how capper Nick and his actions and read and the other players who followed created great upset throughout the country. The president weighed in a number of times the vice president walked out of a game during the anthem where there were protests happening the playing of the national anthem became must see TV. But today, Mary Louise, we're left with three sentences three sentences from the people directly involved but being a dog at reporter. I'm sure you're nosing around and trying to find whatever else sang, so what does everybody else say about this? You betcha of the NFL players union. In a statement says it's not privy to the details of the settlement either. But it says it's glad that Eric Reid. Has earned a job an contract and the union continues to hope that Nick gets his opportunity as well. Eric Reed signed last year with the Carolina Panthers. And just recently he reupped with a very lucrative new three year deal. We got maybe a little insight into the settlement from Yahoo sports. It said it was told on prior occasions that cabernet can read would only settle if a lucrative financial agreement was reached between the players in the NFL and columnist Mike Freeman tweeted today, he's hearing from team officials that the NFL paid kapernick in the sixty to eighty million dollar range and then talk to university of Richmond law. Professor Karl Tobias who's followed this case closely. He says cabernet can read or vindicated in they're recovering something the money and Tobias says they're also vindicated in that a settlement shows the NFL was unwilling to let the case proceed in August of last year an arbitrator ruled the case could go forward. He rejected the NFL's attempts to have the case dismissed that gave the. Players some leverage. Although the collusion is tough to prove in. It wasn't guaranteed. The players would win. All right. So we shall watch for details of the settlement. And also as you said for what Colin Kaepernick may do next beyond being faced with Nike. I was just looking he's thirty one years old. So by Tom Brady standards. He could have a decade a play leftover knows. Yeah. That's to NPR's, Tom Goldman. Thanks very much. You're
