Former Congresswoman Katie Hill Does a Postmortem on a Lost Congressional Seat
"When the news is bad? I know that it is tempting for me to tune out but I also know that sometimes examining bad news and figuring out how to learn from it is a good thing so with that semester. Monaco and I are starting this week. Show with the conversation with former California Representative Katie Hill. Katie resigned from her seat last October and in a special election last week a Republican one bomber. So where do we go from here? Let's ask Katie are welcome Katie Hill. Welcome back to hysteria. We're so happy to have you back. Glad to be back. Thank you first of all. How are you doing man That's like a loaded question. I feel like I'm you know I'm I'm okay. The results the election were pretty horrible. You know in a way it was of what we were expecting. But you obviously didn't ever want and at you know it's just like one thing on top another in life in in figuring a way to get up in Russia yourself off in new forward was I was again when I was a kid. Reverses a still own a horse and the biggest thing that you were taught was being you fall off you get back up and get right back on and that's just kind of against what length is so drilling down into that trauma? A little bit last week was was the special election in California's twenty fifth for everyone listening. What happens and were you surprised when you say what happened do you mean why did we lose or yeah yeah why Jillette. Why did why did why did she was. Yeah well I think the biggest chapter honestly is just people in a special election. Democrats don't show up and you've got the rented. Republican base. That was particularly riled up because of my scandal and excited the opportunity to take a seat back. I mean that was that was literally what they were plotting. They were trying to you. Know to find something they. They found something. They exploited it. They got me to resign and this officers their opportunity to take back. The seat they felt was stolen from them in the first place remember. It hadn't been held by a Republican ever in its current form and they really did not think that it's possible for someone like me. Let alone any Democrats there So I think that they really rallied around this opportunity and from what we know they actually did some very despite the fact that you hear them complain all the time about ballot harvesting. They had some very organized efforts around ballot sting and Them for figuring it out. Because like you know that's to me it's about helping people be a but the churches were really mobilized in getting people to providing drop off centers. And saying that they're gonNA mail to use of swing by the church in you know do it in your car or whatever and we just didn't have something like baton. I think you can also partly attributed to the fact that Democrats were pretty disenchanted by things right. Like you're GONNA be really really frustrated works so barred and felt like you were. Finally I heard over a felt like you were finally represented and have all go away. So quickly is is really disenchanting. Should okay so there was a special election in California's twenty fifth special action in Wisconsin. Seventh both know that these are anecdotal elections in every district is different but you can still kind of extrapolate things on a maybe on a larger scale from this like. Do you think that Democrats should see what happened in your former seat special election as a wakeup call I do. I think that it shows that you remember mine was one of the Houghton quote safest swing seats right. Hillary Clinton when by seven. I want by nine. This isn't one of the seats that should have at risk. So what it means is that you know. Depending on what things are looking like November especially depending on the energy that's coming from rate than district's length. The ones that we flicked that were that were ones that that trump won by sixteen points are really really wants. We need to watch out for so we should give up or stop paying attention to the house just because the Senate is looking like it's within reach or obviously presidency so that to me. The biggest of all first and foremost the second is that as we are adapting to this Nalen strategy. How we doing that right? Field is what has been our strongest most important. Get out the vote effort right and that's modified I don't take. You should give up on it all together. I think they're Balkans Altogether they have they have a different base of people who they can go soo and again reliably that will reliably answer their phones that they can you get to things like drop off ballots churches. But we're GONNA have to modify field programs to to frankly make sure people know how vote by mail. When they have many many of them have never done it before especially in these lower turnout areas of to begin with which are usually the most. Democrats held Katie. Beyond even just in. How do we re engage the Democrats that helped you win by nine points when now they're also facing the pandemic childcare challenges on employment and things that are just like so catastrophic question? I think I am hopeful that the loss actually was a wakeup call for a lot of people might have thought like while the seat will be fine. Now they're like okay. I have really have to bow part of I mean honestly. I think that the the district itself is democratic leaning enough now that if we get to turn out that you know is usually expected in November election. I think she will win. And we saw we saw it happened with the ossoff special in Lucy. Macbeth one in general. I think we're GONNA see that in this case but it still. You know it's something that can't be taken for granted in terms of the support that I had the volunteers mobilized rabbit. I think that's that's going to be the same thing right is how do you figure out ways of ways of getting involved? That may not mean. Move leaving your house And how do we get people excited about it? Especially when the Senate is in play in California and the The obviously dilatory votes are going to be there for Joe Biden. No matter what so. I think I think it has to be like maybe you know maybe the Gee let's get so excited about meeting the seat back because like that. That as it's more like Oh you fuckers. Hello and stand up and what's ours okay. You said the word motherfuckers. Let's expand on that a little bit because we we chatted briefly about this About this race and how it personal it was to you and how personal it was considering the person who ended up winning the seat. Can you talk a little bit about the people who helped promote Christy Smith opponent short so the first person the first slew of images that came out was through the publicly came out was through red? Sti His enemies are images of You. That were released without your consent without taking taken without your consent. Got It and the only person that could have done. That was my accent. Spin obvious denied it. And so it's a it. So that started at Red State. The person who published those who who was the investigative reporter has been a longtime Republican operatives in the region who writes I guess on side. Gun control laws signed by N.J. Governor Phil Murphy
"I know the pain of losing a child again violence and that anyone in this room anyone in this country should ever be faced with that pain for every single day that we fall off into not taking action mothers and fathers August across this country will live to the same nightmare that I did that was congresswoman Lucy Macbeth of Georgia yesterday before the the House Judiciary Committee voted to advance three bills designed to counter the gun violence epidemic in this country including one that would allow authorities to take guns away from dangerous people known as a Red Flag Law. It's the latest gun safety push from the Democrat controlled House which voted earlier this year to require background checks on almost all gun sales something supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans but Senate Republicans have refused to take up any gun safety legislation with Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell insisting that he needs to know what Donald Trump would sign before he brings a bill to the floor which is unusual because the Senate is part of the Congress which is a CO equal branch of government but it's not actually necessary for them to know what the president will sign before voting on legislation today. Donald Trump said he was working with the Senate lawmakers on gun safety measures that will be quote quote acceptable to everybody another things that seems unattainable but he appears unlikely to support even moderate gun safety measures despite a recent spate of mass shootings just last month he reportedly assured the NRA that universal background checks are off the table with Republicans continued to struck gun safety measures at the federal level level. Some states are stepping up in New Jersey this week. Governor Phil Murphy signed an Executive Order mandating that his state not do business with gun manufacturers and dealers that do not adopt opt more stringent gun safety policies joining me now to tell me more about this New Jersey Democratic Governor Phil Murphy good to see you. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for having me Ali. We have seen across this country over the last few years a gun safety advocates point this out all the time that while the focus seems to be on the failure of Congress to pass meaningful legislation on gun since nineteen ninety-four in fact there has been meaningful legislation passed in states across the country including things like red flag flag laws which your state has and they argue that in fact a lot of progress is being made on that front alley quite appropriate. You have a discussion on public safety on this solemn day so so God rest the souls of all. We lost eighteen years ago. Yes there's been progress at the state level because because we frankly have no choice. There's inaction in Washington. I hope the president has seen the light in senator McConnell. I'll believe that when I see it but we have from day one in our administration taken a whole series of actions executive orders legislative action forming a coalition with other like-minded states called states for gun safety and yesterday as you pointed out an executive order that would require gun vendors financial institutions Russians that finance the those vendors as well as insurance companies to adhere to a set of principles that we think are consistent with the values associated with a smart mark gun safety state and we'll keep at it because at the end of the day we all need we all know that we need Congress to act but in the absence of that we can't stop it. We'll continue continue to stay at governor. We have a second amendment in this country. It is the law of the land regardless of whether people like it or not or think that rulings about it have made sense. It is what it is. How does does your new executive order. Stand up to that. When you say that these vendors these companies financial insurance companies live up to a set of standards that you you think are acceptable. How do you do that while standing up to a potential court challenge so we entered this the executive order and the execution of it in a spirit of goodwill so we're hoping to find common ground with the vendors and that's that's guns Samya mission other equipment with sped over the recent period of time about seventy million dollars. We have right now. Six vendors the deal with the state a again we enter that with a spirit of goodwill financial institutions. We spent a lot more in fees. I think we spent about a billion dollars in fees with financial institutions and lastly on the insurance carrier side. It's unclear yet what the exact magnitude is but none of what we're doing in in any way the challenges the Second Amendment this is asking vendors to to adhere to a set of principles that they respect universal universal background checks that they won't sell to Straw purchasers that they'll take training and communication seriously and likewise the financial institutions will choose in their dealings to finance only the vendors whether they be retailer manufacturers also would here to those principles. I I don't think any of that goes near the Second Amendment and I think we can make that case quite clearly. I would hope that we could continue to do so not just a New Jersey but we could. We could do that across sore country governor. I WanNa ask you really quickly. The President says he's GonNa come up with something everybody'll be happy with. There's no gun law that everybody's going to be happy with but there's common ground in those red flag laws across this country are you're an example of common ground where gun safety advocates have worked with with got advocates to come up with something that does not skirt the rule of law and due process in saying that there are people who are dangerous who maybe shouldn't have guns but that'll be adjudicated yeah red flag laws are a good example sample of steps that are broadly if not overwhelmingly supported by Americans of all political stripes universal background checks so I think clocks in at ninety percent. It's completely shameful. Congress and this administration have acted already on those steps hopeful so that they will but in the meantime I'll hope for the best it will prepare for the worst and keep here in New Jersey governor. Thanks for joining tonight. We appreciate a Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey

We have to get into other news twenty twenty actually there is relevant us there. But before we get there Lucy MacBeth is in the news today. Lucid MC bath beat Karen Handel in the six congressional district here in Georgia. And it's fascinating a constituent has received a letter from the congresswoman that if the if the constituent needs help, they should call Johnny Isaacson. I'm not making that up. Thank you for contacting. This is a letter received January twenty third. Thank you for contacting the office of congresswoman, Luke bath, representing the six congressional district of Georgia. You know, here's the other crazy thing is that signed by Lucy MacBeth, but it actually the refer citiz- thank you for contacting the office of congresswoman Lucy MacBeth as opposed to thank you for taking my office. It's it's you were contacting her office signed by her it, just the whole thing is odd. They're getting up speed. She's she's a a freshman member of congress now. But boy, the Republicans are going to do what they can to beat her in twenty twenty. The Democrats are going to do what they can to beat rob Woodall in twenty twenty. And there is an overarching problem, then we're not going to spend time on the data analytics going door to door. But there is an issue here that needs to be discussed, and that is an issue. I I am encountering now with some of you in the listening audience, but also with folks close to the president's political team for twenty twenty and that is in two thousand sixteen pretty much every analyst in pundit, myself included, was fairly certain Hillary Clinton was gonna win. And the polling showed Hillary Clinton was gonna win, and but for seventy thousand voters in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. She would have won. And when anyone tells you that the president has problems twenty twenty what you're going to immediately say, well, you're wrong about forty sixteen will. Yeah. But no. The polling wasn't wrong in twenty sixteen. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by couple percentage points. Actually, she won the popular vote. And media organizations are not going to be pulling people in California for the national election. This time they know that California is going to go democrat. So they're going to focus on the swing states this time and some of you are still going to the polling drug. Listen, I spent all of last year fielding phone calls from you people yelling at me that the polls were wrong in two thousand sixteen they were wrong again. And guess what? The polls weren't wrong between sixteen and they sure as hell were wrong in two thousand eighteen the Democrats took back the house representatives. Do you know how many of you people called, and none of you ever bothered to call it? Apologize to tell me that. Yeah. Actually, I was writing you're wrong about twenty eighteen then the polls around the polar on the Republican. They're going to be the Republicans are gonna increase the house majority. No, they did not. I mean, the data is not out there. Willfully trying to be wrong. And it was actually right. Twenty eighteen. And there's a separate side to this problem that Republicans need to address about the president's base all of your upset that I said, you people that's what I say..

"And to have it be the most diverse class you've ever had. I mean to elect to Muslim women to native American women. Many African American women many women of color every background. Every cultural background every socio economic background and women just needed me. It was it was a need that they had to rise up and defend this country. And and push back on the hate in the division and the anxiety that President Trump is viewed into this into this world, and so many of them just ran on conviction. And they ran in places that had never been won before they ran in red places purple places. They ran in places that we spent all of the last cycle trying to win and failed. But they ran any look at just if you look at Lucy MacBeth who ran in the suburbs of Atlanta and Lucy ran on issues in a red red district that matter to her she lost her son to gun violence. She ran on commonsense. Gun reform. She ran on saying that healthcare should be right and not a privilege. She ran on her moral convictions about how to right the ship of this country, and she won in place. We spent double that amount of money the cycle before and lost. So she really the women who chose to run run were so passionate about their values, and they spoke from their hearts, and frankly, that's what people need to hear. They need to know that you care, they need to know why you care, and they need to know that you're going to fight for them. And that's what these women candidates did. So effectively one thing. One thing we also know about women is.

And all these incredible women, you know, many of us didn't run because of our diverse backgrounds. We really ran because we want to help our neighbors are people across the country. You know, when I think about this moment in this. Kind of historic class. I know that I have this tremendous amount of hope and inspiration. That this disconnect that we all feel with our members of congress right now with just congress in general that it's getting it's that connection is starting to disappear a little bit more. Because now we're starting to look talk and feel like the rest of the country. And so I know when I hear Lucy MacBeth talk about her son that she lost to gun violence. Jane, Russell are politically active maybe hyperactive, Sandra counts, at least five local political groups that she's involved in. But this fall at a bar in Roswell Georgia, she and some parents from her kids school decided to do even more. We had been meeting here on Sundays sometimes for bloody Marys because by the way, they have great bloody Marys here and we decided one Sunday to add postcards. So we wrote postcards for a lot of local candidates that were running activists like Sandberg helped propel democrat Lucy MacBeth to a win in Georgia's sixth congressional district this year that's a big victory for Democrats in a seat that as recently as twenty sixteen elected a Republican by twenty three points. The fact that we turned it in two years. It's pretty amazing Democrats like Sandberg already have a new question can their party keep all of these urban seats at just one David Wasserman is a political analyst at the cook. Political report those are going to be the first district that Republicans pursue in their in their bid to win the majority that said a few factors could work in Democrats favor. Demographics is a big one districts could be much better for Democrats two years from now than they are today because the old Republican base in those districts for lack of a better term, dying out Georgia six, for example, is rapidly becoming more diverse and for MacBeth who is herself African American one. Big focus was energizing non white voters. Alabama democratic Representative Terri Sewell campaigned for her. I think that Lucy was really effective in engaging communities that were not had not been engaged before, you know, women voters as well as minority voters, she really concentrated on that. And that really made a difference racist just one demographic challenge. Republicans face for years. Democrats have also steadily been doing better with college educated voters who are concentrated in many suburbs. There's something else. That's harder to measure Democrats here. Talk about how they hid their beliefs before twenty sixteen now they've banded together. Jen Cox's, founder of the local women's activist group pay that loop a lot.

"Gunson's in America was founded on December fifteenth two thousand twelve that was just one day after the sandy hook elementary school shooting. In two thousand fourteen Lucy MacBeth became the national spokesperson for mom Simeon action. And following the parkland shooting in February of this year loosened MacBeth announced her run for congress. So that timelines really inspiring. You can see how they seem to hook shooting the death of her son. And her being a spokesperson inactive is for moms to me in action all led up to this moment. There's no better person. And no better advocate to be in this fight against gun violence. So I'm really hopeful to see what Lucy MacBeth brings the congress. I really wanted to talk about gun control. Because I think that a lot of people are talking about them at term elections in the context of committees. And especially the investigative committees. Right, Maxine Waters, you know, she'll be the chair of the House Financial Services committee. And of course, that could mean that they could subpoena Trump's financial records, you know, what I'm looking forward to that just as much as the next person, you know, it's like Christmas is coming, you know, but for me, more importantly are the lives that gun violence touches, especially the lives of children and innocent people were touched by gun violence every day, you know, and I'm really looking forward to see what direction congress goes with these new members who are gun control advocates gun control, for instance, if you look at the congressional archives. You'll see that after sandy hook. There have been at least two dozen bills that have failed. But you know, what things are changing and changing fast the tuna eighteen midterm elections marked the first time that gun control advocates outspent, the NRA. This is the first time. So think about that income. In two previous you're spending. So during the twenty fourteen midterms the NRA spent twenty five million dollars to influence congressional races. And in two thousand sixteen they spent fifty five million dollars to influence the election and thirty million dollars went to Trump's election. But you know, the fact that gun control groups outspent, the NRA for this election really paid off about sixty one percent of voters participating in the midterms said that American gun laws should be stricter Democrats ousted at least fifteen House Republicans that had a ratings from the NRA and the democratic candidates that won the candidates that flipped those Republican seats. They all scored in f- rating, and they ran on that they were proud to have an f rating from the NRA, and you know, why that's so important. Our democratic candidates are going to make it so shameful to have a favorable rating from the NRA that you won't be able to win a race with anything higher than an F rating. But you know, listen, baths, just one candidate that ran on gun control. There is a record number of ads. I think there's something around one hundred. And twenty five thousand ads political ads for midterms for house seats Senate seats in gubernatorial races that made gun control central to their messaging, and at least seventeen newly elected House Democrats back stricter gun laws. And that includes Jennifer Weixin of north Virginia. Abigail spend burger of New Jersey and Elaine Lauria of Virginia. Every go spend burger is interesting. She's a former CIA operative and she was backed by the Gabby giffords organization against gun violence for her stance on tougher gun laws. She's even talked about having to carry a gun every day for her job. So she understands what it means to be responsible gun owner engine for waxen of north Virginia. As a Senator she voted for bills would establish universal background checks. Enclosed gun show, loophole and band bump stocks and Loria Virginia. She's a navy veteran. She spent twenty years in the navy. She was deployed six times. She just retired from the navy in June of twenty seventeen and she was also endorsed by Gabby giffords. So all through this. In addition to Lucy, MacBeth made gun control, a central theme of their campaigns. No, I don't want to imply that we're out of the woods here right there. Still needs to be support from the Senate where the Democrats don't have the majority. And of course, from the executive branch was proven to be pretty useless than standing up to the NRA. But the tide is turning this could be the beginning of the end of the NRA's influence over politics. And of course, the end of this deadly gun culture here in this country..

"We have to remember Tom Price won this district in two thousand sixteen by twenty three points and Donald Trump only one at by two points, and John also lost it by four. So a lot of experts did not see this district being in jeopardy for Karen Handel, but because of the dynamic of this of this election and also having Lucy MacBeth being such a a passionate candidate authentic candidate it really it really worked out to her favor. And I and I love the story. I went canvassing for her last weekend. When I was in Georgia in her district and talk to people at the doors about her, and they were thrilled. They were excited about her in. In her candidates and her story, they really felt heartfelt for her. Yeah. I wonder mayor Tomlinson about the issue of guns in Georgia. I mean, obviously when I was down there, you see something we're not used to New York, which are signed on restaurants that say no guns allowed which is a little bit jarring for somebody who comes from a blue state to say, oh my God people carry guns. I was told by restaurant owner that people go to the waffle house with their side arms on that would freak me out. But people do it. Right. So in a state like that how kind of unusual is it for somebody who really was running very strongly on gun reform, actually one in this district. Right. Well, first of all I'd say be careful about generalities in Georgia because we do have a very sophisticated electric very diverse electorate. So yes, we have those rule areas where people, of course, have a great passion for their hunting. And then we have these large urban and suburban areas where that's not as much a part of the daily life and people went since gun control. They want to be safe in their places of business. They want their kids to be safe in school all throughout Georgia. I don't care for rural or urban. And so people are ready. We very strongly just like the rest of the nation does for sensible gun control laws and now, it's our legislature. That's out of step. And in fact, three of the most outrageous pieces of legislation that passed in the last couple of years in Georgia. We're actually not supported in polling, and we're not supported by our law enforcement agencies across across the board because it endangers their lives as whereas wells the lies that they're trying to protect so folks like Lucy, really speak. To average Georgians. And I think that's what you saw on election day, Tuesday and very quickly. Corinne. What is this tell Democrats because that's a really good point is Democrats sort of presumed certain things about the south that you can't run down. The can't go to the rural areas. You can't talk about guns. All of that kind of seems to have been swept aside in this in this mid-term. Yeah. It really has been swept aside in this midterm. Look you need an authentic candidate. Right. You need someone who can really speak to to everyone who has a story who's able to talk about real issues and the issues were were their economy healthcare tax cuts in some some very red district's that I went to across the country people really people aren't stupid. They understood what the tax cuts where whether if you're Republican or democrat. And so that matter one last thing, I just want to say, I have a friend who grew up in Jordan Essex. She told me when she was younger kill parents would dress their kids in confederate outfits and the kids dress, and Malcolm X t shirt, we get kicked out of schools. I mean, this is such a major win the first woman of color to come out. Out of this Georgia six to be elected in this in this district. This is a great I've interviewed Lucie Macbeth's. He's an incredible person very strong person. But I have to ask you mayor Thomas in one other thing because there is another race. That's coming up run off for a clearly very important, which is secretary of state in Georgia's. Well..

The Federal Reserve will hold interest rates between two and two and a quarter percent this month. "They're learning about in some cases, their own racial and class privilege and the way that it has blinkered them in the past. These are conversations I have had with women around the country in the past few weeks who I don't. I think would have had these kinds of conversations three years ago five years ago, you know, that that points really interesting because I've been I've been watching interviews with with some of the women who are sort of doing volunteering, particularly in places like Orange County or suburban Virginia where you have a volunteer base that is largely white relatively affluent upper middle class women who's not it's not just that they're invested. It's like their actual politics and worldview is changing through the sort of experience of doing the work. Absolutely. They're learning things every day, and in many cases because we have a roster historic. Number of women candidates. Women of color candidates candidates of color candidates with progressive left politics. A lot of them find themselves in this position of doing work on behalf of black women women of color running for office, they're turning to leadership to black women who've been involved in organising organizing for many years, and they are learning from those women, and that's a dynamic for exa-. People in Georgia. That's really key. A lot of the women who I went down and talk to around the race in twenty seventeen who were newly keyed up very engaged in politics. But in that race, they were they were working for a young white male candidate. Now, they're going all out for Lucy MC bath, I Abrahams and that I want to say that Lucy MacBeth race that is to me one of the most interesting in the country for this. The reason John also we all watched that race that was the big marquee special election matchup millions of dollars Karen Handel. John. Also fall short Lucy MacBeth got an amazing story. She lost her son to gun violence, and is running in that same district is neck and neck and not the candidate. That would have been drafted by the Democratic Party political class a year ago. And right now is right poise to maybe maybe win that race. This is a lesson in it should be a lesson for all of us. And I think it's something that so many of these particular group of women that were talking about have been learning, which is that new kinds of candidates candidates. Are not traditional candidates who had democratic establishment wants to send forward that. These kinds of candidates can engage and lead the people who've actually been doing this work for decades before us often women of color often marginalized people who've been in the trenches engaged long before twenty sixteen are the people we might turn to for Jetta and exciting and possible leadership going forward. Yeah. I'm gonna that that race. I have my eyes on that race is one of many Rebecca traced or thanks so much for being here. Thank you. "Well, I believe that for far too long women's accusations about any kind of sexual harassment have not been taken seriously. And I think at any point in time whether these investigations, we should always be making investigations on these kinds of insinuations and accusations, whether it be done by the state, whether it'd be done by the federal government, or whether it whether it be done by law enforcement, we need to start taking these kinds of accusations. Seriously. Absolutely on on this that we can absolutely agree that when there is a woman who is face something her accusations must be taken seriously at the same time. We are a nation with a fundamental judicial tenant which is presumed innocent. And so we have to be sure that both parties have their rights. They are upheld throughout the process. And unfortunately, we have seen a little bit recently of a gross a rush to judgment at the same time. You know, it seems like there's a troubling double standard in this whole metoo space when there were credible allegations and evidence against DNC co-chairman Keith Ellison who is a sitting member of congress and running for general in Minnesota. And yet. There's abject silence from the left. So I think all of us whether you are a Republican or democrat have a responsibility to pursue what the allegations are in a thorough and expeditions way. While also upholding the presumed innocence tennis jecklin, MRs for both candidates. It's about the border wall congresswoman, you support it miss MacBeth or against building it we can start with you miss MacBeth. Please explain your stance and wine as I've said before I do believe that we should have strong security and law enforcement at the borders. We should have vetting. But I do believe that we should be looking at each and every case individually, we should not be assuming that people that are coming here for more torn nations or coming here for political asylum are thieves and criminals and lumping them altogether. Look at each and every situation distinctly, we need to make sure of course. We're people that are coming here. But there is a more humane way to do so copy comprehensive immigration reform, making sure that Republicans as well as Democrats reach across the aisle to come to some commonsense solutions so that people can live here come here. Live the American dream. As I said, I would hope that all of us can agree that a caravan with thousands of people working its way to our border in an effort to storm into our country is something that we cannot have it underscores exactly why we must have border security. I support the wall I support whatever measures we must take to secure the border. It is why I specifically supported legislation to immigration overhaul bills that one advanced funded all of the security measures. But unlike my opponent's supporters, many have come here to support her. I don't support open borders, and I do not support abolishing is because part of the jobs of our ice agents goes well beyond just ensuring that individuals don't come legally into the country. They're they're they have say some seven hundred children last year from human trafficking apprehended nine thousand some human traffickers coyotes, and are stopping tens of thousands of pounds of illegal drugs. From coming across that border every single month Christian. Congresswoman handle with regard to gun laws. Yes. Does it violate the second amendment to support universal background checks? So let me just start with this and Lucy you and your family have really endured an unimaginable tragedy. And I would like to recognize and say that it takes tremendous courage to turn such a horrific thing into a mission and passion. We just happen to disagree on the approach of how to keep our communities. Safest I support strengthening universal background check system. We did that in congress this summer closing several loopholes and making sure that the agencies responsible for maintaining that Nick system did. So I also supported opening up the door for federal research into gun violence because I think we have to understand what's happening, particularly with our young people today. It's why I supported fully funding the twenty first century cures act, which is really at the root of gun violence. We must do better in the arena of mental health and build out our mental health capacity. Jockeying speak to that. Ninety six Americans in this country continue to die every single day and hundreds more injured due to the fact that person's like Representative handle along with the Trump administration continue to turn a blind eye to what ninety percent of Americans in this country agree upon background checks for all gun sales and red flag laws to prevent tragedies. Such as parkland from happening now Representative handle continues to align herself ninety eight percent of the time with President Trump and his policies over thirty million dollars was paid for President Trump to become a to become president and the White House, and that was paid by the NRA gun lobby and Representative panelists also received thousands of dollars from the in Oregon lobby. That's actually how she got in this seat. And the reason why we don't get anything done in Washington on this issue is because most of our legislators are bought and paid by the gun lobby. If I might Lucie that is. Okay. Thank you. But that is a ludicrous statement, miss MacBeth. First of all, I was I was elected to the sixth district because the majority of the people the sixth district voted for me, if you recall that election last summer await you don't because you weren't here. And you didn't vote you didn't even vote in it. You remember, however that in that election? Some forty million dollars was spent the overwhelming majority of it was outside money. Not even from the state of Georgia. Let alone the sixth district's about he's all the time that we have questions each candidate. Now, we have sixty seconds for a closing statement, Lucy MacBeth that you get the first closing statement. Thank you very much. I am Lucy MacBeth and in two thousand twelve my son was killed and what people have considered the national lab music case. I started questioning our leaders. Why were these kinds of tragedies continuing to happen? And as I continue to ask more and more questions. Why were legislators not willing to keep our families safe? There was silence. There were there was complicity. What I began to understand is that no one was going to be willing to do anything. That's the reason why I stood up. And that's the reason why I'm taking action what I've noticed over and over again as that Karen Handel and other Republican legislators refused to do anything about this unnecessary gun violence. They will not take action in the end the only things that I am behold. Into in this district are the people that I talked to every single day and my son's legacy. I'm running because I'm a mother on a mission here in Marietta to represent everyone. Thank you very much for this opportunity to be here. And to the people that success, Eric thank you for. What is an extraordinary honor to serve you. I've worked hard over the years to represent you. As voting county commission, chairman as secretary of state, and now in congress where I have been working to get real results for you and hardworking families across this district getting our economy going again. So that you have more money in your pocket paycheck to paycheck with average family of four receiving over four thousand four hundred dollars more in their paychecks. Also, making sure that everyone has opportunity for jobs at the lowest the lowest unemployment in decades, working to end the opioid crisis, which is taking so many lies in our district fighting against human trafficking. Making sure that we keep our community safe our schools safe and working on the mental health issue. I am an unlikely member of congress leaving an abuse abusive home at just seventeen. Working my way up to be a member of congress. It is a great privilege, and I ask for your vote to be able to keep working for you. Work hard to earn. It. Thank you. Thank you so much debate. Abrams and Kemp virtually tied in Georgia governor's race
"Camp. The Republican secretary of state you were just talking about leading in our poll by one point forty six forty five over Stacey Abrams. Keep in mind, though, there is a third candidate here the libertarian Ted Mets getting four percent why that is so crucial here. Georgia sort of unique among states, they have a run off provision in governor's races in so of neither nor Abrahams. Get fifty percent on election day in November of Mets gets a few points keeps them both under fifty this goes to a runoff that run off would be held on December fourth. So that is the wildcard there. Also, the governor's race the intensity in it. The high interest in it we may be seeing a bit of a ripple effect in to congressional races. In Georgia, remember nationally, Democrats trying to pick up twenty three seats. Here's a blast from the past member about a year year and a half ago special election in Georgia's sixth district of suburbs. North of Atlanta, John. Was the democratic hated at the Democrats ported thirty million bucks fell short Karen Handel one that special election now, she's running for a full term. And look at this Opole out this week shows are only leading by four points. This is making Republicans nationally nervous just this week. They through more than a million dollars into this race at the last minute trying to keep he ahead in this race. Interestingly in this poll, you're seeing right here. Stacey Abrams democratic candidate for governor. Leading in this district by a point so could Abrahams actually ended up having an effect helping Lucy MacBeth the democratic heated here next door, the seventh district again suburbs. Just outside Atlanta. Traditionally Republican Trump though, did not do as well in this district as norm as Republicans normally do again poll this week showing the Republican incumbent they're only ahead by six head in this race. But it shows you in those suburbs. Democrats this is the kind of place if they get that extra burst of energy. This is one to keep an eye on potentially on Alexa. So it's

Now rob Woodall on the other hand people are. Looking at that race and wondering what's going. On there and whether or not the. Republicans will hold that when they Caroline Bordeaux is a democratic opponent She has a better shot at getting that seat then handles opponent does getting that, seat so keep that in mind And I think you're gonna see a lot of money pour into Woodall seat here on both sides as Republicans try to defend it and Democrats try to take it away from him when everything's changing.
