Michael Luciano Is Hung on New York Special Election

"Apparently you don't need to think at all to work at mediaite just like media matters Just young inexperienced barely literate and an ideologue of the left Now a perfect example of this is Michael Luciano He's a Luciano And he wants you to know because he's so worldly Let's see here Want you to know that this election Really came down to one place Well this is a significant victory for Democrats Republicans lose special election and swing district they were poised to win Democrat pat Ryan is headed to Congress after defeating Republican Mark molinaro In a special election on Tuesday night With just a small handful of votes left to be counted Ryan leads 52 to 48% in New York's 19th congressional district last month multiple polls showed Ryan trailing by double digits Not surprisingly Republicans were optimistic about capturing the seat Which Democrat Antonio Delgado vacated to become lieutenant governor of the state in May Located in upstate New York The 19th went for Donald Trump by 7 points in 2016 and Joe Biden by two in 2020 District is largely rural which is why Republicans were optimistic about flipping the seat in a midterm election because historically The president's party endures a net loss in House seats MSNBC Steve kornacki was the network's big board parsing county vote data just before NBC News called the race

The Story of Paul 'Lefty' Della Universita With His Nephew Jerry Vairo

"Paulie lefty Della university town. He was a protege of Lucky Luciano. And he left, he left an indelible mark on the mafia and American history. This is a guy who personally had his hand in events like the World War II allied invasion of Sicily, the birth of the Las Vegas casinos, the Cuban heroin connection, Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance and the Lufthansa, which was made popular in the film Goodfellas. But I'm telling you, you never heard of him. Well, I'm here to tell you he's real. I don't bullshit you. And on the phone with me straight from Florida is his great nephew, Jerry varro, Jerry. Well, what's up, AJ? How you doing, pal? I'm good. How about yourself? All right, I just. I just basically intro great uncle lefty and let the folks know a little about who he was, what he had his hands in, but there's a million things we could start with. We could start with his upbringing, et cetera, et cetera, his knowing is knowing numbers so well and his left hand that he knocked out a guy, didn't he kill a guy with a punch or some shit like that. And I know there's a big legend around his nickname, but I want to start in 1945. I think Pauley left these about 27 years old at the time and he had masterminded the biggest narcotics highest in American history by hearing about a large shipment of morphine from the New York docks. Got him about a half a $1 million and made him a major player in the mafia, right? That's basically the beginning of him becoming a big player, yeah? Well, at least the beginning when he was mentioned and The New York Times in that True Detective magazine, he did some stuff before that. But that's oh yeah. Yeah. That was when he was noticed by other guys. Like, who's this guy that gets away with doing that? Right. Now the thing that's really, I think when he really came to prominence and again, correct me from, I'm going on memory here, 'cause we sat down, you and I, many times, and I read the book, and I've done the radio shows with you, et cetera. But when this Sicilian stepped in and showed, they kind of showed lefty who really ran America's crime syndicate. And that basically was the Cosa Nostra back in Sicily. So Pauly gets promoted to a position that's basically the Sicilian ambassador to the American mob, right? Correct. He was made from what Tony Napoli told me. He was made at a young age by Lucky Luciano set that whole thing up because guys would be in deported left and right for drugs. They were into drugs big time. And Pauly was American born. So we couldn't be deported. And he was a 100% Sicilian, and he was loyal, and he was under the wing of Luciano and Jimmy alto. So he was a perfect candidate to be that

Study: Delta Variant May Double Risk of Hospitalization for Unvaccinated

"New Covid 19 infections per day. That's up 21% in the last two weeks, CBS News correspondent Lilia Luciano reports. Covid patients are overwhelming hospitals from coast to coast. Driving the summer surge. The delta variant, which a new study finds more than doubles, the risk of hospitalization for the unvaccinated E. R. S, like this one in Atlanta are turning ambulances away. It's difficult at this point to find a single hospital. That's not on some type of diversion. The death toll from Covid 19 in Oregon is

The plaintiffs, including a group of San Diego gun owners, really glad that he reaffirmed that are right to keep and bear arms is rock solid even here in California. Asylum seekers left in small border town

"150,000 migrants were caught trying to cross the southern border in March. That's 50% more than in February. Correspondent Lilia Luciano tells us that many are being dumped in a small town in Arizona in the tiny town of Arklow in the middle of the Arizona Desert Border Patrol comes by every day. Drops off dozens of asylum seekers after they've been processed there left to find their way. This isn't a local decision, Aaron Cooper says. The town doesn't have the resource is needed. So the county has to drive asylum seekers 2.5 hours to the nearest shelter in Tucson. So when we went from one drop today, Too often times two drops today very quickly. When Your Life Depends on the Name of a Bean

"When the French ruled Italy, it was a rough go of it. The Italians had had it. We're talking the year was 1280. There's a famous night they call the night of the pigs. This is not even the vespas. I'm not talking about there's a similar story about Lucky Luciano and no, this is way back in the 1200s, but when France ruled Italy or Sicily, I should say. There were, they put it French soldier in every house. In Sicily. And that French soldiers job was not only to make sure there'd be no Sicilian uprisings, but also to impregnate the Sicilian women there. Make that Sicilian woman have a child that had French blood. And at this point, Sicily had been ruled by many, many countries, like I said, and this particular group of Sicilian men had had it. So one night they all banded together. I believe it was Easter night. And they met and they said, look, Easter night at a certain hour, that's the night you're going to overpower the French guard in your house. And you're going to kill him. You're not only going to kill him. You're going to kill any children he may have sired with your wives. We've got to stop the bloodline becoming too French. By the Italians and the French don't really get along too well. So they did that. They did just that. The hour came and there was an uprising and they killed. Now, here's how this is fascinating. Here's how the Italians could find out if a French man was lying who said he was Italian. Because I'm sure there are many French men who did that trying to pose as a non threat and live. There's one word that the French, for some reason, can not pronounce like the Italians can. And it all comes down to a white being an Italian we call it a cheat should have been cheat to that. I don't know what it is about the palette of French men or women or the way they move their lips or tongue or the roof of the mouth. They can say chicha, like sicilians can. And the minute, a Sicilian herd of French man out of that word, not the way it's supposed to be pronounced, they were killed. Could you imagine your life coming down to the fact that whether or not you can pronounce a fucking bean in the dialect, you need to do it in? Ruthless,

MLB Spring training: Which Players Have A Shot At Making the Giants' Team?

"One guy that stands out to me and we'll get to Luciano. We've talked so much about him and how exciting and tantalizing he is. But we're talking bullpen, arms and guys who have a legitimate shot to make this team and one of the parting gifts from Bobby Evans. It seems like one of these guys. Camilo dove all he's been in the system time now did we saw him against the Dodgers the other night? He is exciting, and I think is you put out carry the best hair in the Giants bullpen right now. Oh, yeah, he he does have the best care because last year they had a guy Rodolfo Martinez, who was a Johnny Cueto look like just with better dreadlocks than Johnny Cueto. If you can imagine that this year, they've got Camilo Jovel who does not have better dreadlocks. But he has died his dreadlocks, so they're like orangish Red, And I'm hoping that by the regular season he'll have in his Giants Orange, because could you imagine that coming out of the bullpen? Got weapon 97 98 with a cutter and the breaking off a nasty slider. And then all of a sudden he's got the closer like hair, Camilo Devil and you make a great point. He is a parting gift from Bobby Evans. And this is something that we should talk about. I should write about eventually is all the parting gifts from Bobby Evans because you're starting to see the fruit of the Giants International. Sign me focus coming through the system. Marco Luciano, a Bobby Evans guy, Alexander Canario, Bobby Evans Guy. Curving Castro, a Bobby Evans guy. And so the Giants are starting to see this focus that we saw in the like post 2014 2015 World Series era where they went down to the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and other Latin American countries and sign some dudes and you're seeing that those dudes who they got when they were 16 17 years old are coming through this farm system and are going to be ready to contribute and so The village of all immediately popped out the other night against the Dodgers Cubs, But there's several other players, several other young players. Several other young pitchers who have really stood out so far. Well in another one is from the left side. Jake long this kid is from Sacramento. I think you would the Sac state or he's like up from the Northern California area. So he said. It was so funny. The quote I saw from him the other day was Buster Posey called him over to throw a bullpen and he called him by his name, and he was all stoked that Buster newest name because he's of that age group beauties like you and I. If Buster called us over, he'd be like, dude, that's Buster Posey calling my name so Him from the left side. You know, I hate to do the com thing, but I'm getting I'm getting Billy Wagner Vibes. Dude, What do you think? Billy Wagner vibes? That's that's fascinating. And so the reason I say that is because the jobs are actually building this guy up is a starter there. They're thinking of him a 97 from the left side, a guy with a hammer curveball and a good change up there looking at him as someone who could actually be in the rotation. And so when can't first started? Gabe Kapler traffic trump Buster Posey. They all said. Hey, pay some attention to this Sam Long guy. He's got something to him. And we're thinking, okay, This is just, you know, a guy who threw two good bullpens. You never know that happens every spring. He's probably a double A or maybe a triple a arm who could help them out of the bullpen Eventually. Then all of a sudden, he appears in the Cactus League opener against the Angels, and he has got major league stuff. No question in my mind after seeing him. Three pitches in I turn to Mark Sanchez in the press box. I go. I have seen enough. This guy can help the Giants right now, and I think that in keeping him as a starter and sending him down to triple A or double a to open up the season, you're potentially talking about someone copes who could somehow morphed his way into the Giants top pitching prospect and maybe beat Sean Jelly or Tristen back or some things other guys. The chance to excited about to the major league level. And so it's really fasting to see Sam Long come out of the bullpen because you're juxtaposing that with guys like Camilo, Javelin Caribbean Castro, who is another guy, Bobby Evan, signed who just has that hammer curve coming out of the bullpen 97. Very little mite early experience. But there are the pieces in place and you can correct me if I'm wrong. If you've seen anything differently, the first three or four days of spring training their pieces in place for the Giants to have one of the most exciting bullpens and Major league baseball and potentially one of the best is far as electricity goes like with stuff

Bobby Evans Giants Johnny Cueto Camilo Dove Rodolfo Martinez Camilo Jovel Buster Posey Camilo Devil Marco Luciano Dodgers Alexander Canario Curving Castro Billy Wagner Luciano Sam Long Buster Gabe Kapler Dominican Republic Venezuela Cactus League

"For mobile classrooms. I think because. I was thinking if i was today. Fifteen or sixteen years old and i was interested in learning to program. I would want to learn to program for the smartphone rights from me. This would be feeding but writing programs basically bring stuff on the feminine. Oh no several weeks of running program is not so great and then doing web development which is something. That's you know when i was learning to program. I wanted to be able to show me things that i was doing to my family and my friends and have them find it interesting a some level and is hard to show something. That's sprinting out. Stuff in the tamil to somebody else who is not an icy and they find it interesting oil anyway and now. I'm where i think biden again. But i do plan to. Maybe i'm not saying when i start a new book immediately. This is such a marathon. I need to have a many months away from the commitment of writing every day. But i do have plans for content for teaching people to program from scratch. And i hope that when. I do come back to this projects by tony's better suited for that and i think i wave that it would be better suited for that would be to have better support for mobile applications though. There are a number of other topics that i'd love to dig into with you. It's definitely been fun exploring the subject matter but just wanted to see if there's anything else in terms of some of the recent changes to python or features or changes to the language that you're particularly keeping an eye on or invested or worried about that. We didn't discuss yet that you'd like to cover before we close out the show. Yeah like i said when. I talked about concurrent. Programming with multiple. Carsoup has been some discussion even a pep written about soothing temperatures. Which is a band being kind of a dominant feature of the biden and therapy. That's been around for many years but at the idea is not to expose it to end users. There's been a lot of discussions about it. That people were saying that it was difficult to implementing a way that didn't break extent libraries. And that's where are really the strengths right when we talked about data sciences external libraries. We can't afford to bake them at all. And probably the main reason why fifi is not more popular today is because of incompatibility with the libraries and see and for china and so on but anyway so. I wish there was a solution to this problem of multi-car programming but i wanted to be well-considered there then something that will not break. We don't need any more breakage. I think what are the things that i like to say to people. That are lured them. I in the fight on world is that everybody has been.

"That's do have huge code basis right so we do. At the time was working at dropbox. They apparently have millions of lines of python code and also there were type checkers development. Google and facebook so distributed companies are companies. That have huge lazing pipe. Them they hired redo was already working at dropbox but like invited hostile. I don't know how to pronounce his name. But anyway that was the guy who created mike by my by was his dissertation and so we invited him to work for dropbox and of course what they were working on was the typing of system. So that was the major thing that appeared and the other thing there was an important change was a secret programming with a sink. In a way. I wrote about a synchronous programming in the first edition. It was something brand new at the time when it was done with the you'd from keywords and the api also changed a lot because although the cinco module was backed of the standard library invites entry. Three point. four inlets provisional and in fact the only pieces of codes in the book that broke over the years were the examples. Using ko mika's a sink was the name of a function for example in ohio. And then it became my reserved keywords and the api changed regardless of that in other aspects. It may be improved a lot. Actually i haven't written there. That chapter yet are updated. But it's going to be a major rewrite in. It's going to be simplified. I mean explanations are going to be safer. I think because the api is is easier to use. I also created more examples during those years as i talked about as he could us programming in different events that i'm going to use in the book so i think those are the two major changes. No i have to say because if people follow me on twitter they may know that sometimes getting involved in some discussions about the features of pattern. I now can say that. I enjoy the static. Typing system of biden. Okay i think with bite on three points. Nine in got to a place where i really like. It's because we have the beauty ings like this to dictate show on supporting this brackets for genetic. So you'll need to import so much stuff from the typing module and another major improvement was dead Protocols impact on three point eight.

"And I've been able to get a few good ones on. I had one recently nate. You might be interested in this guy named Michael Di. Leonardo who was a soldier made man in the Gambino family and he gave me a detailed blow by blow description of how he was inducted into the mob that ceremony by Sammy. The Bull Von Down. He was inducted with John. Gotti junior now. The reason Sammy the bull did it. Because John Gotti was the was the boss at that time was because he thought it would a improper for him to induct his own son into his grandma interesting. Yeah and there's always been a lot of controversy about John Gotti junior being made anyhow because they say he didn't really ever do anything and and he didn't last very long out. I've noticed he didn't last very long either report. He's talking to sixty minutes and people like that John. Gotti be turning in his grave. Yes I've I've heard that Sun did not follow in the father's footsteps service Doctor Close. He didn't he didn't have the heart and it was like that. John Gotti is he said and a wiretap once he said I'm close enough now. Coaster grows up tomorrow and on coast knows forever. Something like that. So he he was and this guy was a real deal the only reason he went into a witness protection and then ended up coming on my podcast a few years later. Is they start taking all of his money while he was in Bennett injury and then they sent him a message said well you've been put on the shelf and he said. Oh okay he said you know. I probably will get back out of here. I wasn't getting a life sentence or the death penalty. That's what that's what happened. I was talking to FBI agent friend of mine afterwards. Who WORKED ORGANIZED CRIME WITH US here in Kansas City? He said Yeah. I said that's what happened. In the modern Mafi said they got no uh no sense of propriety. No sense of tradition. No sense of loyalty to anybody other than the money in the. Okay let's see. Let's do this Do the thing and we talked a little bit about what that talk about nine. I've done some step on lucky Luciano. I have never done that time. Paint frame in which he started making his move start with his original boss. Jonas Messy era. I always stumble of some of these names. But you can help me with that. I'm sure but but when he when he first started making his move and and they ended up What I I read about when I wanted the first mob books I ever read was talking about the Niger Sicilian vespers. Now I find that that. There's a lot of controversy about whether that really happened. They really killed a lot of people at night but the first book. I read talked about that and it kind of captured. My Imagination Anyhow let's let's talk and I know you've written extensively about this time. Let's talk about Lucky Luciano when him making his first move and then we're going into making his second move quick background at Lucky Luciano. Born in Sicily like a lot of guys. Italian family moved the United States because of poverty and terrible conditions. Back home Ease raised in New York City and runs pretty wild lot of street. Gangs makes friends midsummer Equally delinquent kids you have to be named Ireland Ski and Bugs Bugsy Siegel Benjamin Siegel Bugsy being his nickname buyers actually busted. He's one of the first people arrested for violating federal drug laws. 'cause he's trying to sell opium he rises up the ranks He's a very clever guy and he acquires the nickname lucky because he was taken for a ride and survive and I don't think the benefit of your listeners. I need to explain what taken for a ride. No you don't get out by three guys tortured beaten up pretty much left for dead and staggered to. He survived although yet. Injuries is one. I drew the rest of his life but this was so astonishing he was called lucky he starts working for. Geo SEPE JOE THE BOSS. Mezeray and very quickly decides. He doesn't really like Joe very much because Joe is what they called a mustache Pete and that was a very sort of derogatory nickname that the young serve mafia mafioso would apply to the old guard. Guys were very clannish only wanted to do business with fellow Sicilians and this rankled with people like Lucky Luciano. Because he had friends were Jewish he was happy to do business with Jewish or Irish gangsters. He didn't care to him. It was just a way to make money and he regarded the mustache. Pete's kind of fuddy-duddies basically they're obsessed with honor more so than running a business you know. They'd always be fuming about some guy looked at em wrong and oh kill this guy. So there's some plotting going on lucky take's Joe boss out for a nice restaurant meal and on Coney Island Nineteen thirty one April nineteen thirty-one. And while you know they're having this lovely meal and they played little cards and at one point lucky says I gotta use the Washer and he goes in the washroom in Lo and behold these four gunmen Russian. And Shoot Joe. The boss for bullets and Lucky asked about it or was in the washroom at the time. I didn't see anything kind of a bit of the reversal of that famous scene in the Godfather Al Pacino takes a gun out of the bathroom shoots the gangster boss and the police chief sort of reversal of that so lucky Luciano. His eliminated Joe Boss as ry. Sorry Joe. The boss us now faced the new sort of bought new head. Guy In town is a guy named Salvatori barons and Manzano is also from Sicily and he was initially sent to America by Sicilian gangster by the name of dawn. Ferro with the explicit instruction do sort of organize the American Italian American underworld into certain formal structure and saw salvator comes to the United States with this plan. His boss promptly gets thrown in jail by Mussolini's Fascist government. So Merrin Zano. Thanks okay. Well you know I'll just take the boss's plan and do it myself. Merrin ZANU holds big meeting with Lucky Luciano. And all these other Italian American gangsters and basically lays out the structure of what we know as Mafia. The American mafia organizes everybody into families by families and he outlines a higher structure. You've got off you've got under boss you've got the capital capitals lieutenant in charge of Tan Soldiers and underneath the soldiers. You have associates in an associate can be anybody you can be Jewish African American Irish. Whatever but you can't become a member of the Mafia that's reserved only for people who are like quote Unquote Cheer Blooded Italians or Sicilians Aaron Zanu outlines various. Strictures you talk about this organization which he refers to as cost Straw. That means you're not supposed to sleep with the wife. Fellow member You know if you're arrested you're supposed to say oh. I don't know anything. Total silence so outlines these various ideas and most the people gathered. They like this because you know organizations good more power more money. There's a problem though. Is that Barron? Zano is not the easiest guy in the world to get along with and he wants to be the boss of bosses. Meaning that we've got this wonderful five family structure which covers New York City and eventually will expand to cover Chicago. Basically the rest U. S. Manzano. Says I want to be in charge everything I wanted to basically dictator and the guys again underneath them Luchino. They don't really like this. Because the whole point was that this would be this would give them a structure but they didn't want to have like one guy constantly yelling the telling him what to do and it doesn't help at Manzano completely paranoid and not a very stable versatility and it won't point Luchino. Aaron San Jose actually putting together a death list and according to legend He has the names of just about ever remainder off you figure on it including Lucio and Manzano Gain Carnegie Legend. Because some of these things are a little difficult nail down. 'cause they've off your big leaving minutes to their meetings. Manzano apparently hires mad mad dog. Cole was a gunman who had worked for Doug. Scholtz was a Jewish gangster and Cole was basically fired by Schultz because he was too crazy. Even for Dutch. Schultz was mentally unstable. As was that shows you like and he acquires the nickname mad dog. 'cause he tries to kill on Schultz's associates by spraying a bunch of kids with bullets. They happen to be in the way so just shoot the ball. So this is the guy. He Manzano Hicks eliminate his enemies. So anyway Luchino gets worded this so for the second time in one year ranges a rub out of another of a major boss. He has a bunch of guys burst into Marin Santos headquarters. This is a September nineteen thirty one dressed is US treasury agents that's how they get in slashing fake badges and they shoot him stab Manzano. The forget and I'll take charge very quickly. And he reassures all sort of people in the mafia families that Barron Anna was utter. He was out to kill you all. I took care of a problem and he also does. Something very clever is that he doesn't try to become the boss of boss. What would she does? He envisions this organized mafia Five family structure being sort of controlled not by one guy at the top. I like the commission that basically would be like a board of directors to use sorta corporate metaphor this would have representation from all the major mafia families and they would discuss issues. They wouldn't just shoot each other. You know shoot each other in the head. They would get together discuss issues about territories or rackets or politicians needed to be bribed or whatnot. So Luchino sets this up technically. He's he's sort of defacto. Boss of bosses people treat him like that just because he's smart and he knows what he's doing but he never tries to enforce sort of. He never tries to act like a dictator. He's smart enough to know that he shouldn't he'd Manzano's mistakes. So Chino is really. If Salvatore Zano set up and organized American Mafia Lucina really took the concept and ran with this because Manzano didn't really enjoy the fruits of his Labor for very long. Because it was kill within a very short time of setting up this Organiz offiah so luchino takes this and maintains this and just enhances the structure of these sort of note. Five families the commission and becomes this incredibly powerful boss and his strategy is he doesn objective. I it's like. He's not a shrinking wallflower by any means but he sees violence as a means to an end like a way to Seoul business dispute. He doesn't he doesn't order hits just because he doesn't like the way a guy looked at or because a guy spoke fresh about him or something. He doesn't dwell on these obsessive points of honor that the Mustache Pete's did you know that. He's happy to use negotiation political persuasion and just outright bribery and little creative thuggery mixed in mixed in there too rather than just sort of you know trying to shove guns and everyone's face and Boston around and this works quite well for some time. Let's go back this little bit. What what I find really interesting is the people around Lucky Luciano at this point in time and how long they stayed with it. I mean you go back. And they stayed away. Upto the fifties sixties and the seventies. They've had that. Joe Add noise Came over with lucky and warning warned him off about Mastery of wanting to kill him. And and then you got you know Albert Anastasia and Vito Genovese Sane Bugsy Siegel and Ciro Terranova. And Meyer Lansky was part of that. I think Meyer Lansky was part of the little crew of Jewish guys that that killed Manzano. I believe acted like the Treasury Johnson. So let's let's talk a little bit with folks about the people that were in Bali. I think he Frank Stella was involved at that point in time. Those guys all lasted all the way..

Joe Boss U. S. Manzano John Gotti Luciano Manzano Salvatore Zano United States Luchino Gotti New York City Sicily Pete Barron Anna Manzano Hicks Manzano Gain Carnegie Legend Meyer Lansky Sammy Bugsy Siegel Benjamin Siegel B Cole

"Then he didn't have that. But Siegel had become kind of a Hollywood mobs Liberty Siegel and you know everything focuses on Hollywood Hollywood and somebody flamboyant and and handsome and anybody that was a character out there in Hollywood and Los Angeles. There's a lot of press out there in the gun. Pay a lot of attention into him and and the mob guys do not like that kind of public attention but he was. It was a mob celebrity in in Hollywood Stuck in about. That's when I I start talking about building this big hotel casino which he would go ahead and build in Las Vegas which was It was genius genius. He saw the potential where nobody was really saying. Especially in the post war. All these guys were at that point nine. They were building the Boulder Dam so he had all these guys these men they got men together. Then you got to after have gambling alcohol and women and you got a big casino going about thirty miles or forty miles from the work site that has has hotel rooms and beautiful women and casinos and and all the things that are around a gambling business. which would be prostitution and drinking and smoking why You know it was genius. It's time plus there was no other place in the United States. It was like that and Las Vegas Nevada. Had these lose gambling laws so I mean kind of a no brainer hind as hindsight but but back then he was the first one that really saw the potential now he had He had kind of bungled angled ability to this. It was the Flamingo Hotel. Remember and original cost at men projected at one point five million and they're not sure but the the entire cost cost over runs for the military or for any city project offsetting the the actual price tag has gotten up to about six million dollars and people. People don't know haven't got any money back yet. They don't know whether bugsy is stealing money out of it and taking it or he's just bungling it is probably a combination of both more than likely likely he had said a date for December the twenty six nineteen forty six for the grand opening but they still. They didn't know what you know where this was going to be successful or not. They thought it was. And Bugsy it is your name would be but they still didn't know is still kind of a crapshoot To to use a inappropriate phrase. I think here now mayor Lansky told her about the meeting that he had heard that. Bugsy Siegel's girlfriend and who's the well known Virginia in Your Hill had been making trips abroad and deposit money in a Swiss bank account now lansky he was he who was a friend of Bugsy Siegel's they came up together and and he said he believed that his partner would skim even more money and leave the country at the Flamingo was a bust. Rather than he knew he'd he'd be made to pay for it In maybe with these lie for her maybe just He'd have to come up with some other kinds of action and give a lot of the money to the other mob guys and try to repay him as best he could. So in the end they took a vote out. On Bugsy Siegel Lansky and Phil Kastel. who were both Jewish decided that they should not take they would not vote owed on it so the rest of the Suzanne mobsters voted and they said yeah a needs to be killed and they even named the person who was gotta do it man named Charleston Shetty Eddie out of Chicago and the Los Angeles family boss? Jack Dragon was supposed to be involved with this. Now lansky suggested that that now landscape suggests that they wait until after the grand opening was just a few days away in in his possibly to maybe give bugsy sometime. Maybe Bugsy we'll we'll get it figured out that that is on the on the button is they say he's on the hit it list so they did. They didn't Christmas Eve arrived during this time. They kind of took a break from their meetings ratings and their wives and girlfriends wives or girlfriends depending on which they wanted to come down showed up had a big party Frank Sinatra czar. He came down with the Fischetti brothers which sprang all these Connections with Chicago the day after Christmas they reconvened because everybody wanted to know wonder the report on how the Flamingo Hotel opening had been received and it was hard to get that information and of course there was a three hour time differential and and They didn't really know said rain. and cold weather prevented planes from bringing customers from Los Angeles and and in the end it turned out the opening was considered a disaster. But Lansky said you know that that's kind of a one off deal and we can salvage this. They reopened they. It closed He he recommend close Flamengo and it wasn't quite completed. I guess a closed it and then completed the work and reopen a couple of months later and and of course the rest is history became a huge financial success and everybody that had money in this thing would become rich from it and all the other casinos was in hotels that followed all the way up to to the nineteen seventies and Kansas City and Chicago when the Stardust and the Tropicana however they had not forgiven bugsy Siegel for all the cost overruns and bringing down all the press and everything onto him and somebody using a rifle shot him in the as he sat on the couch in Virginia Hills Home July June twentieth. Nineteen forty seven. That would be about a little over a year. You're after this meeting now. In his book the Last Testament Lucky Luciano said at the end of the Conference Gina Vase. They wanted to talk to him in private again and he would say that gene was claim that I heard that Washington meaning. The governor g knows you're in Nevada and they're getting ready to put screws to these jerks and Cuba to get you thrown out. There's going to be so much heat. Nobody can do nothing to help you. You'RE GONNA have to get out of here and go back to Italy by all rights writes everything that's over there's half mine and I want. Louisiana was living Gina Base. Trying to tell him that he needs to go back Italy and and wants half of everything he's got and he figures that Gina Vase as one that ratted him out to somebody prior to this Henry Linger somebody. Somebody got word do that dude. Who was who was a bear catman he? He was relentless on these guys in the narcotics business and so they figured Genovese say Bradley. Does somebody got the word back to him that he was down there. In Cuba Luciano would claim later that he gave Gina Visa beating punching gene and kicking him and broke three of his ribs. I'm not for sure about that because he also says he avoided marking his face so wouldn't really be any evidence. Luciano would also hello claim later that he and Albert anesthesia put Gina based on a plane and told him that if you ever mentioned the incident incident and anyone then then he says quote from facebook. Then I Charlie Luciano. We'll get back to New York and if only long enough to do a final job on you now Luciano's Fears of being discovered and what Gina Base Eight. I told him were quickly realized. Pay News New York. Newspapers would report his presence in Vana. Now some would say that really it was it was his own indiscretions zone moving around too much and and being too obvious down there but area slinger would Sent a letter to the Cuban government demanding demanding that it deport Luciano back to Italy. WHO's the Cuban government balked s on your went all the way to the president? Harry Truman who beat Tom Dooley at this point. In time President Truman told him to take whatever steps are necessary to force Cuba to deport Luciano. Adler Langer went public in announced that until Louisiana was sent back to Cuba he would put a halt to all shipments of medical supplies to Cuba All landscaping Batista had a meeting Luciano. And I said you know dude you better go ahead and leave the country and then we won't have to deport what you and then you could come back but he had his backup by then. Charlie Lucky Luciano had his backup by then he refused. He said you know if I go by. Then how can I be the boss of all bosses that I just do. Whatever you guys tell me to do? So he hired in attorney who concocted a plan. Believe this or not the counter. The United States medical supplies embargo and and the plan was to to get Cuba to cut off. All sugar shipments the United States. Now that's big time stuff but this plan of action never really materialized. It was probably more in his mind. He probably thought he could do that. Or would you gotta try to do that. Because he's arrested by Cuban officials in February of nineteen forty seven the next year I guess they they made made him stand. He's house until they settled up any personal matters that he wanted to take care of. And and then put in a immigration lockup and and sent all the way back to Cuba They tried to let him go to Venezuela but as leaguer found out about it said no he's got to go back to Italy so finally in March nineteen forty seven and he's put on a old cargo Turkey's cargo steamer the SS bike here. We said it took over a month for the boat and reach. Italy has got Latin. Add insult to injury when he gets back to Italy's arrested Presume region on name. Sure why but anyhow a a he spends the next fifteen years in Italy in finally he comes back to the United States January twenty six nineteen sixty not too but he's in a coffin the more aboard a Pan American Airways cargo plane claim by rallies and sent out He's already had a A A service I think. And he is interred in the end and he's interred in the family vault at Saint John's cemetery in in New York And you know what ironically seven years later Vito genovese would be buried in a vault one hundred feet away from him so this author here may says even in death. Luciano cannot cannot escape the greedy bastard who betrayed him and most of this information came the last testament. Lucky Luciano by Martin Gauche and Richard Hammer and it was not published until twelve years. After Luciano's death. He supposedly dictated a lot of the book himself during and last months of his life. And as I said before there's a lot of factual errors in you know. A lot of history is what we agree. It is and never let the facts getting away a good good story myself and you know lucky. Luciano did not. So that's what we got about the Havana meeting and Lucky Luciano. The two-part series we have a friend or relative has a problem with drugs alcohol. Make your first call too. I go call eight one six three six months fifty nine hundred or go to their website. "You are listening to gangland wire hosted by former Kansas City police intelligence unit. Detective Jerry Jenkins Molo while wire-tappers out there back here in the Studio Gang Lenoir our second episode about Charles or Charlie Lucky Luciano you you know Last episode we talked a little bit about his time in prison. Really is just one prison interesting little prison story when he was in Danang more and eventually worked his way out. If you remember to buy Making a deal with the navy and he got a got the cooperation of Albert and his station. And the other mob guys in in New York City in New Jersey that worked on the docks to help the navy and make sure there's no saboteurs on the DACHSHUND and to alert them to any strangers any German spies or Italian spies might be poking around the docks. Here's you know. A lot of those Loud the equipment and and material Israel that we're going to the war effort would let those docs. They could alert the U boats out in the North Atlantic convoy was leaving. They could pick up tips on the dachshund they would maybe pick up gossip from the joints. You know loose lips sink ships as that's where that came from in that certain boat was gonNA was loaded with Munitions GonNa Hook up with other boats and form up a convoy to go across so He he worked deal to make sure that the ships for the shipping lines were secure as best as best. They could in in reward for that that they commuted his sentence. He had like a thirty year sentence and he'd done about ten years in New York. State penitentiary. System got himself deported reported Italy but he didn't stay there very long because By nineteen forty six. He was figuring out forty seven. He was figuring out how he could get get his way back closer to the United States. And like I said before he he got himself closer to New York City with a a better prison that was closer to New York City during in that time. And and that's what these guys do. They want to be close to their friends and their base in her hometown. So He got himself self Wanted to get himself back closer to the United States and he got himself to Cuba and excellent and Cuba was. If you think about it. Cuba was was that open. City are an open. Cuba was really an open. Country in Havana was really to open city for all kinds of Vice activities and and just what. The MOM likes Land already been poking around there about the gambling Central Traffic Kante had numerous connections over in Cuba. That clubs and Joni nine miles from the mainland United States and people people were going over there to gamble all the way back into the thirties and spread petition narcotics. And you know the liquor laws were a lot more lenient. And all they had to do if they wanted to make money over there was opened up for American tourists. Making American tours. Feel safe even pay off the The Cuban regulators and the Cuban Policemen which was pretty easy to do Eventually all the narcotics will come up through Montreal in Canada after Castro of course but before Castro in in back in the thirties and forties a lot of the mob guys were involved in the importation Dacian of heroin. They want to get it up to New York and Cuba was a place to do to bring it also Illegal immigrants could get to Cuban easily and and then get over to the United States so it was. It was kind of a hotbed of of illegal activity that was directed at the United States. Meyer Lansky already had the connections in Cuba and so he got it set up. Luciano got himself to separate passports. He boarded a freighter in Italy away which took him to Venezuela then he flew to Mexico City and any book day private flight from Mexico City directly to Vanna Cuba and when he got there his childhood friend Mayor Lansky was waiting for him. took him to the Hotel Nationale. which was the big time Motel in the Nineteen Thirties thirties forties and fifties and even booked himself in under his real name Salvator Louisiana? I guess they figured anybody. Government agents would be looking for lucky Luciano. Oh ciano were her Charles Luciano so salvator. Luciana was his His Cover name he got a luxurious suite. Of course yes he did he did write a book. That's really been With another author on the last testament of Lucky Luciano and there is really been called into question. He talked about meetings that happen after he was gone from the United States and like he was there and there was a lot of things in it but He he did say in that for that book that this was the first time that no handcuffs have been on me and nobody was breathing over my shoulder for quite some time was a direct quote After he got to Cuba spread a lot of money around. He put down on on what was going on and who he was paid off all the hotel staff and Because he did not want to draw the attention of the Federal Bureau of narcotics and a man named Harry as linger who was was dead on the mob. They were the the bureau of narcotics. Federal Bureau of narcotics was really the only people paying attention to the mob During the war well relied. They didn't do much during the war but after the war up until after nineteen fifty seven in the Appalachian Convention then then The FBI got into big time and and and they got out of narcotics. But if you want to find out information from law enforcement about the mob during these years you gotta gotTa go the Federal Bureau of narcotics. He he checked out of the hotel shortly after and moved into a home in Alabama suburb did book Look Big Room at the Hotel Nationale for the week of December twenty second nineteen forty six. 'cause that's when all the mob bosses from United States we're GONNA come down there Lansky. He was carrying messages back and forth between Miami and Vanik as he could he had cover he had business interests in in Havana and Miami Emme both and he would go back to the United States and get hold of people and and they make plans about who was coming and who wouldn't gunman and why they weren't coming blance gate eh Luciano. He ought to buy an interest in this casino hotel. Nationale kind of putting men more with the government because Lansky owned it with another well known. Cuban politician named Batista. Batista will go on and be the prime minister. The whatever the president of Cuba when Castro takes over but Easton Lansky wanting to pay one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. He told his biographers in the last test. Lucky Luciano that he didn't really want to take that hundred hundred fifty thousand out of his pocket but he told Lancy that all the embodies did his December twenty second meaning should bring envelopes to welcoming back across the Atlantic beyond the American side supposedly. These Christmas presents are envelopes to Lucky Luciano in adept being over two hundred thousand dollars dollars and used that money to buy this interest in the casino. Now Luciano's long range plans. Were to get Tom Dewey Thomas Dewey to rescind his deportation deportation see do a do it was running for president and he was getting his people back in the United States to start supporting support in that campaign and and put money into the campaign. Nineteen forty eight which is kind of interesting because he rans against Harry. Truman who Harry Truman Had the backing of the Kansas City crime family and in depth the Chicago crime family to get those both of those big major major metropolitan on areas votes lined up. If Dewey was elected president and they would call in that they would call in that little loan that they made him see these guys. They don't do anything for nothing now. That was GONNA be. That was nineteen forty-six GonNa be a couple of years during this time landscape lansky negotiated a six month extension of Luciano's visa where the Cuban Ministry of the Interior now Magin that means negotiating a six month extension probably meant Passan so many hundred bucks under the table I would I would bet so. Just before the December twenty second meeting about a week before Vito Oh gina visa arrived to see Luciano. They'd been really close friends back in the nineteen twenties and and when Luciano established his crime. Family when they when when it developed the five families in the commission and in Luciano's crime family he had selected Vito Genovese to servers underboss. So the more Modern Day Gina Base family was exactly actually the Luciano family now he he had frank Castillo awry when he went to the joint Frank Stella was was kind of the the guy that it was running in and that was part of the problem with Stella was Genovese was a really violent guy and and didn't mind doing things with a gun and a knife now Branka Stella was is a guy that was smart enough to know that he needed to make deals and negotiate and and and just do business and they ended up being. There ended up being problems between Gino Visa and A. and Frank Costello and actually he he hired somebody to try to hit him in hit went wrong but Coastal just got about on out after that Luciano had you know the the qualities that he selected Gino visa a four. If they were used against him it would not not be so pretty and any came to realize after not being around Genovese say and and not being his boss. It really was a conniving greedy backstabbing stabbing double-dealing dude and he lost a lot of respect for him. Little side note about Gina Visa. He He had been in Italy himself for quite a while because he had been indicted for murder in the United States and right after the war he was arrested by the united the States army and they took it and send him and they sent him back to Brooklyn to stand trial but there was a key. Witness Against Union Bay was poisoned so he was released in just a few months before the SAVANNA meeting and of course he he wanted to go back and run the family and he didn't want to have anything to do particularly Luciano by now Lansky told Luciano. Wijetunga was there. He wanted to muscle in on Albert Anesthesia. who had been the you know? Of course the boss and In Brooklyn all around the docks and he wanted to take over some of his action. According to the last testament lucky Luciano genovese started talking to Luchino when he met up with him and the first thing he said was that. And it's Deja needs to be eliminated because is he's thinking about killing this head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in Henry and slinger Louisiana's you know he said no he said that's That's it's not the deal. And and he pointed out that as far as he knew Vito Genovese was the only one interested in selling narcotics stage. It was not really interested in that. He had Eddie's murder inc but he also had a lot of rackets down on the DACHSHUND and the dockworker unions we had money..

"They they were three long shots and they all came in so if he'd have if he'd a bet on me to morning Nafta to That five thousand dollars meaning it had more than enough to buy. That had church so the story is not too long after that incident by their highland was called into the warden's office in the. He was really nervous that this whole interaction. Iraq's with Lucky Luciano might have something to do with they'd question him about it and you know he wasn't in confession but he didn't want to you know as a present culture didn't won't be known as Iran and and You know never know lucky me that was kind of a benign tip. It was indicated his ongoing ability L. D. to connect with the outside and and and being involved with some kind of a criminal activities. I mean being able to pick three horses three long shots in a row. Oh before a race indicated that there's something Mikey panky going on. But when he got in there the warden talk about lucky but he had something else. There was another another controversy going on and the warden told via Hainan. Well there's a new organization's been formed. It's calls itself. The New York League for separation of Church Church state and the ward went on to say that this group has found an injunction in county court to stop construction of this church on government. Grounds buzzer highland in the Catholic Church. Got Hold Attorney. And he filed a response to this suit and they won that case by April nineteen forty one. The Church church was constructed on the prison grounds. It was it was one hundred and fifty six feet by fifty feet and it had one hundred foot spire pointing up to the heaven and they called. Let's Saint Dismas Church of the good thief at the grand opening of the church. The newspapers covered it and got some national attention and and the media was wanting to tell the story and and even Hollywood started calling. They wanted to do a movie about this Interviews of the in interviews of the inmates at the time we talk about how how their work on the Church and working with this new bother highland literally change their lives for the better. And that's what bother high wanted all along early. Okay restorative justice kind of programs and in this was kind of a really early rudimentary Prison Rehabilitation Project back when Back in the day when the only rehabilitation anybody got in the penitentiary was getting thrown in the hallway or getting the shit beat out down south they they would Take them out and literally horsewhipped them and put them in a box out in the sun all day long and and up north here they probably when you got thrown in a hole in the winner. I got a feeling that it was mighty cold right. After the Churches Completed Father Highland ended up having some health problems and left the prison by nineteen fifty fifty. Three he are lived in upstate. New York and he went around the country. Doing speaking engagements My nineteen fifty four of a a motorist driving down the Road Zoe car off the side of the road and looked inside and and other items in there he was he was dead from a heart attack more than likely. They said he had a fondness for cigars and blood. Clots Nicotine will cause you to have have blood clots in narrowing. The Artie arteries now this story and in the popular culture Father Highland did get a feed option. The movie rights heights journalists. Well known journalist of the time Bob Considine wrote a screenplay that whole project was scrapped in nineteen forty five. There was a book relased laced all gates of data written by another priest that was in nineteen fifty one another. I besides building a church on the prison grounds for Father Island Island was he was actually the first paid New York state chaplain. They got an organ in the Nineteen Fifties of twenty five thousand dollar theatrical model donated by two Jewish brothers and was eventually replaced by electronic model. They still have that church up there today. The original organ was relocated catered to a state museum in upstate. New York there are some sources it will stay that lucky. Luciano donated Red Oak for the church. Pews gotta See Capacity Capacity of twelve hundred people. This was this was from May nineteen eighty nine interview with fighter highlands niece. He also donated some special oak which was used in the the church doors. You'll find a next episode that right after the war lucky. Luciano was actually paroled and long as he would allow himself to be deported. Back to Sicily not come back to the United States another interesting little tidbit. About the the church altar it was made from wood from one of Ferdinand Magellan's ships was donated by a distant relative of the explorer. I think the actual documents show that Lucky Luciano when he left the prison donated amount of money that was been on his books that he wasn't going to take with him and he said it was the equivalent. It went about three hundred dollars. There was there was a forger in data more at the time his name was Carmelo ratty and he worked on the chaplain he hand. Dan paid and all the stained glass windows and the DISMAS saint dismas mural behind the altar. Let's say later in life that they valued that aren't working working one hundred thousand dollars. SATCHY left the prison system for good in nineteen sixty and went straight from. Then on Rota Outta Baga FY called the convict and the stained glass windows so so in during the war I mentioned during the war. Luckily CIANO was contacted by the office of Naval Intelligence. They're worried about German and Italian agents coming into the United States to the New York waterfront. They also were worried. About sabotage of ships carrying supplies would be sent to England and they can send out messages you boats. The wolf packs were prowling the North Atlantic winds shift left so knowing on that that the Mafia accident control the waterfront back. Then they got hold of Meyer Mayor Landscape and he looked him up with Lucky Luciano. It got himself transferred to Great Eight Meadow Correctional Facility which was a lot closer New York City. These guys always want to get closer to their hometown. We've had our our local guys Sevilla's rags at whole plot where one of the younger Tony. Ripe Sabella was down in Texarkana and he wanted to get transferred up to Leavenworth which is about forty miles from Kansas City. In the uncovered a plot of him in another guy to bribe awarded to get that transfer so the navy and the State of New York and Lucky Luciano ended up reaching deal at got transferred. He would get his sentence commuted He would would provide the assistance of all the mob guys around the docks in New York City and New Jersey to provide lied intelligence to the navy got Albert Anastasia who was Kinda really control the dogs. He promised her be no strikes during the war in preparation for the nineteen forty three allied invasion of Sicily. Luciano supposedly provide US military with Sicilian mafia contacts. This this collaboration even had a title at called Operation Underworld probably ought to go into that big time. That might be kind of interesting if I can find documents on that thing. Nineteen forty-six awards over and as reward for his wartime cooperation. I'm a agreed. And he had not agreed. Before that Luciano's sentence could be commuted and he could be deported Italy he but he did maintain his U. S. citizenship. Apr He had a US citizenship. Although he was brought over here as a small child he was not a birth citizens. Shall we say so. They transported transport him. I'm over in. He had his last Spaghetti dinner with our data station. Few other guest on the ship before he left for Italy and the next the next episode will will tell you about his his next steps when he's over in Sisley he's not he's not out. They got him down a little bit but he's not out he's GONNA end up down in Nevada. You're going to get closer back to the United States and and get back to any Cuban in and actually be able able to call a meeting of all the heads major crime families and and get some things out so now now now now you know the story. Korea lucky Luciano time in Dan Maura in upstate New York. It wasn't a real long time when it was loud enough. I think even overnights long enough. And and how he tried to help father other highland weather high than just didn't want was a little nervous about taking these help. If you have.
