"That's B. E. T. T. E. R. M. E. N. T. For the betterment of you where in the world do they go way back? It really goes back to the year. He lost the truck series championship at homestead. And I was going to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and Brendan and his father. Were kind enough to give me time for interviews out there. Which is how I got Nascar Winston Cup scene of which. I was the editor of the end to pay for my rental car while I was at the National Finals. Rodeo perfect move so and then we ended up being together at penske. Yes when I four years worked for Then penske racing south but for Roger. Pin Skin Brendan was in the Kodak Car. So what kept you playing all these years and Nancy Harkness? Well you know I honestly when I retired Look I've I've gotten older. I've gotten out of shape and I I've had a great. I've had a great career in Nascar. I didn't accomplish things I wanted but I had a group. I've won every level but cup. I've I've compete for championships. I've had a great time at great people you know it was. It was time to go. I was kind of at the end of the deal where I was fine and I was happy getting out but that last year I got. I met and got hooked up with a family the beard family. And there's something about the whole goofy way. These guys are doing racing. That was charming to me and so I said I'd help him out when I in two thousand seventeen and then I retired and they said well we want you raise for US still agree you know Daytona it'd be a lot of fun Daytona five hundred. Come on why not so I go okay. I'll do two thousand eighteen and then we did so good two thousand eighteen. I'm like all right fine. I'll do two thousand nine hundred forty but then I'm done in two thousand nineteen and then midway through the year that Mrs Beard deb. She wants me for another ten years and I told Mrs Beard. Good luck So so like no Ma'am so I finally told him last year I said look I'm end of this end of nineteen and she kept begging kept talking and I shouldn't say begging she's like no you're coming. She really is very forceful woman. And so I said Okay. I'll do the do the Daytona five hundred for you and I will. I will do the five hundred. And that's it then we'll get somebody else for their season. Then Talladega happened. And you know you've known me long enough to know that sometimes things don't go all the way to the top on me. I had a brilliant time in that Talladega race. I loved it flipping. The car was was fun and my interview afterwards was was me I mean. I don't think you'd expect anything else but it really got me going. You know what I do want to do all four races this year so I came back for this year. Deb or saying here. Listen to me I will not be in a race car and twenty twenty one in Nascar. I am not going to the new car. I have noticed this. Is it so if you see me in this coach lot next year beat me over the head with your microphone? Okay but I have to admit you are the first driver that I have ever heard saying that. Going airborne at Talladega was fun. Here's why I grew up in the off road world. We flip cars often. Matter of fact I posted a video on twitter. Like three weeks later of my nephew. My father's grandson. Doing a double barrel landing on his wheels and keep going in a sixteen hundred car. It's something that we do what we do know about flipping. It hurts less flipping. Racecar hurts much less than hitting a wall. It you know two hundred miles an hour and losing forty miles an hour instantly at my age. I don't want to hit walls hard. So what happens when you flip? A car is an even as children can understand this. It diminishes velocity. Every time you hit you have small hits now. It looks violent to the fans that looks. Oh my God frightful scary but most the time all it does is slowly slow you down so you get lots of bruises. Lots of little bruises your legs or bruise. Your arms approved your head. You know you're busy. You Got Vertigo. You're like Oh my God but you walk away and go. Oh man that was Kinda sore when you hit a wall. I hit the wall. Talladega in two thousand eighteen blew a right front tire on the last lap. Coming to check flying went from the bottom of the race track to the top. I was under the covers for two weeks. I mean it. It hurt hurt. Your head hurts everything I mean it. It takes a toll so at this age. I'd rather flip racecar. Okay I'm GonNa hit things a lot less hard now. There is a big fear of somebody hitting you of course in the in the halo so there's fear of it but in the end it's going to hurt less now. Not only did it hurt less. I landed on my fricking wheels and kept going and so there was kind of a cool aspect of it. I did try to fire it up and keep going after I stopped and shut it off and was talking to the NASCAR officials at the window. I asked for. Were still up and reach to start it up. Start at. He looked at me. So don't even think about it so I went to sad because Dale Earnhardt did here on the stretch at Daytona era. Well that's true and I would have. That was then part. This is the now part I would have loved to have driven a back to back without been cruelest. Able to drive it back. I wanted to but they didn't let it would've driven the crowd would have gone. Yeah Yeah but I remember that day. And they don't WanNa hear when that happened Fidel Earnhardt and he actually got out of the. He climbed out of the ambulance got he looked at them and see. That was different. Dale Earnhardt. He could do what he wanted. That's true he he goes off. Were still up get out of my way. Grabbed his helmet back in. The car drove in it and we actually had a picture of Phil. Kamali was right there at the pits when he came in and feel Cavalli got a photo of it and they were trying they were trying to bear bond and duct tape it back the other. Keep RACING NASCAR WISCONSIN. The heads going. What do we do very true? But when you're flipping like that and you're airborne aren't you concerned about even though you're taking the philosophy away about how you're going to land? Yes you're I was really worried about is getting hit like I said in the halo. The only thing remember I knew I was in the lead of the race so I know there are forty storming rhinoceros coming down. You know coming down the road to get me. All I'm worried about is where I'm going to get hit because you know something else is going to hit you. Where is that going to be but at the time there in the desert? There's two things that when he if you know you're going to do a flip the you can land on your wheels. You keep your hand on the wheel you wait for it to land. You might get on a side. Hit The gas to try to straighten it out of Iraq. So when you're upside down there my hands were still on the wheel and there was. I was waiting for two things. Where was the next hit going to be wasn't going to be one where it actually landed or was it going to be one that it started just flipping and once it starts flipping. Then you take your hands off the wheel then you take hands off you do what we call the deadman's cross try to put your arms and your seatbelt and just hold on and relax because if your arms are flailing it's just gonNA break fingers break. Risks you know little bitty bones that get broke a lot so you just try to relax and put your hands across your chest and wait for it to end but when it landed. I was still driving. If you watch the tape. You see it. Land Act Motor still running. I hit the gas. I hit the gas landed on top Chris Booster and counter steer to what I thought was the right direction because at the time you have a little vertigo. And if you watch the tape the only thing. I was trying to figure out how to get away from heard of rhinos coming at me and when I finally had enough smoke clear I realized that the ninety six car was heading right towards me and I go down. Is that way and I turned the wheel and the car backed off the race track and around what the field but I mean I still drive in the whole time. That's interesting. That's very very interesting because I had no idea that you put that comes from the off road world because we're like we aren't done driving in the off road world we are. We're trying to figure out if it to get it back on its wheels. You know this week we're sitting here at Daytona. We had a big off-road race called King of the Hammers Just this weekend. Massive off-road racing in Lucerne Valley California. And you watch these guys. They're trying to rock a rock crawl with race but these guys are on the sides of their tires hitting the gas trying to make it spin. Hit something to land on its wheel. We don't stop just because it's on its side on its route. We're always trying to do something. So that comes from the desert where you wait and then when it's too late then you let go and you wait for the right. That makes perfect sense. But now do you see yourself even though you say this is your last year. Who knows car Glenn and still doing offroad racing? Oh yeah no no no no. I'm not done Rayson. Okay no I've won the Baja thousand last year for the first time for my family We've been doing it. My Dad started nineteen seventy in Bah been racist sixties as I bought thousand was seventy and we'd never want it as a family and so that was a huge deal. I had my nephew. My father's grandson. Who by the way thinks that's easy? He's one for one. Father is oh for forty two and now now jake is one for one and jake held a seventeen. Oh crap and so. He thinks he's like Oh teenager. That's thinks it's easy. I've been doing this since I was fifteen and never won. So he You know so. I'll be doing that as long as I got. Breath in me If I lose a little bit of weight I might come back and do some sports cars again. Just because there's a couple of race I wanted to. I still want to go to the car. I have a dream that one day. I'd still love to go on and drive something so I got some bucket list races that I still want to do and you know look up on the twenty Daytona. I've won the Baja. One Thousand One races and NASCAR hell the sixty second. Daytona five hundred. Maybe the sixty two car can win it like the numbers there now so so I could win this one. L. Let's go. Let's get all the big ones. Oh I not I mean and if and if anyone hasn't seen Ford versus Ferrari yet. You need to do a phenomenal movie. Yes it was interesting and I was so thrilled to see it nominated for best pitcher and angers me that it's not being getting the publicity that that it deserves. Yeah I mean look. It's still racing movie so it doesn't probably get the respect that war movies gin but brilliant job amazing amazing cemetery with and it was a great story. It and I've talked to people that knew the players in the deal who they said. No they like you know I mean I knew Mr Shelby so I mean I can. I can speak to his character of of but you know they. They say that that guy that was the race car driver really was kind of just didn't care I mean so I mean it was just. They did a phenomenal job. They really did. And of course the heart of the movie where they arrive in a mall was actually filmed along and gentleman who was in the pits. Avenue was actually with Ford as guest with chip Ganassi an special showing of the movie in Charlotte and he said that the portrayal of the pits of Lama in that movie world's identical.
